GAME NOTES BY: BOB GROVE

THE SERIES

Tonight the Penguins host the Florida Panthers for the first time in almost a year . Because of a quirk in the scheduling, each of the last four games between the teams has been played in Florida; the Panthers’ last game here in Pittsburgh came on Feb . 22, 2013, when the Penguins fired 40 shots at goaltender Jacob Markstrom and got three unanswered goals from Chris Kunitz, Matt Niskanen and Dustin Jeffrey to earn a 3-1 victory . . . The teams have split two games this season, as Brad Boyes had two goals and an assist in a 6-3 Florida victory on Oct . 11 in Jeff Zatkoff’s first NHL start, and Evgeni Malkin had a goal and three assists in a 5-1 Pittsburgh victory on Nov. 30. . . The Penguins are 13-4-0 in their last 17 games against Florida . . . Over the last seven games in this series, the Panthers have either scored one goal (five times, all losses) or six goals (twice, both wins) . . . Over the last four games between the teams, the Penguins are 3-for-12 (25 .0 percent) on the power play, while the Panthers are 7-for-19 (36 .8 percent) . . . The teams have played 78 regular-season games, with Pittsburgh scoring 222 goals and the Panthers 220 . Pittsburgh is 41-30-7 against Florida, including 23-11-4 at home . . . The Penguins have won eight straight home games against the Panthers, their longest current home streak against one team . Florida’s last win here came more than five years ago on Jan . 3, 2009 (1-6) . Pittsburgh is also 11-1-0 in its last 12 home games against the Panthers . . . The Penguins’ only continued on page 7

longer home win streaks against one team are against the NY Islanders (13), Ottawa (10), Boston (10), Detroit (9), Vancouver (9) and the Atlanta Thrashers (9). . . Prior to winning 11 of their last 12 home games against Florida, the Penguins lost seven straight here to the Panthers. . . Florida has missed on 16 straight power play chances here in Pittsburgh since Steven Reinprecht beat Brent Johnson on Dec. 12, 2009. The Penguins’ power play hasn’t been much better here in Pittsburgh, going 1-for-17 over the last five games here. . . This is the last game between the teams this season. THE PENGUINS

Malkin has two goals and six points in his last three games against Florida and has 25 points in 24 career games against the Panthers. . . Sidney Crosby has points in eight of his last 10 games against Florida (6+5). . . The Penguins have played only one game in the past eight days, that coming last Wednesday here against Washington. This is the second of a three-game homestand, as Pittsburgh will host Montreal on Wednesday and then hit the road to play the Islanders on Thursday and Dallas on Saturday. . . After tonight’s game, Pittsburgh will have nine games remaining before the Olympic break, including four at home. . .

Marc-Andre Fleury is 7-1-0 in his last eight decisions against Florida and has won five straight against the Panthers here. . . Niskanen was leading all NHL defensemen at plus-24 after Pittsburgh’s 2-1 victory at Calgary on Jan . 10 . That victory helped the Penguins to earn five of a possible six points on their trip through Western Canada . . . The Penguins went into last Wednesday’s game here against Washington with a chance to set a team record for consecutive home wins at 13 . . . Only five NHL teams have a record home winning streak longer than 13 games: Detroit (23), Philadelphia (20), Boston (20), NY Islanders (14) and NY Rangers (14) .

This is the middle game of a three-game trip for the Panthers, who played at Carolina on Saturday night and play in Buffalo tomorrow night . . . Florida had lost two of its last three games before hosting the NY Islanders on Jan . 14 and San Jose on Jan . 16 . . . The Panthers were 4-2-1 in their last seven road games before facing the Hurricanes . . . Rookie Aleksander Barkov was leading Florida in scoring with 22 points in the first 45 games, followed by Boyes and Tomas Fleischmann (21 points each) . . . Boyes had a team-high 12 goals . . . Florida entered action last week with the NHL’s worst power play at 10 .1 percent, while its penalty killing ranked 29th at 29 .1 percent . . . The Panthers were averaging 2 .2 goals per game at that point, third-worst in the NHL . 8

WE’RE HERE FOR THE HOCKEY.

LET’S GO PENS

IS PROUD TO BE A PITTSBURGH-BASED BRAND.

AROUND THE NHL BY: MIKE PRISUTA

SELECT COMPANY:

Boston’s Torey Krug has become the fifth defenseman in Bruins’ history to score 10 goals as a rookie. In doing so Krug joined a club that included Ray Bourque (17 in 1979-80), Greg Hawgood (16 in 1988-89), Bobby Orr (13 in 1966-67) and Eddie Shore (12 in 1926-27).

SO CLOSE:

Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf registered 28:24 of ice time in the Winter Classic, which left him just 11 seconds shy of the NHL record for ice time by a defenseman in an outdoor game (28:35 by the Rangers’ Dan Girardi in the 2012 Winter Classic).

CAPS KEEP COMING:

Washington’s 22-16-7 mark through 45 games included an NHL-best nine wins in games the Capitals trailed in the third period.

NEAR-PERFECT START: Minnesota

goaltender Darcy Kuemper recorded his first career shutout in his second NHL start, a 4-0 decision on Jan. 12 at Nashville. That upped Kuemper’s record to 2-0-0 and improved his two-game totals to 62 saves on

63 shots against for a .048 goalsagainst average and a .948 save percentage.

GET THEM EARLY: The

Predators’ 19-21-7 record through 47 games included a mark of 16-2-4 in games in which Nashville scored first and a 14-1-1 slate when the Predators led after one period.

WINNING BIG:

St. Louis often won convincingly while compiling a record of 31-8-5 through 44 games. The Blues had a league-leading plus-60 goal differential at that juncture, and had an NHL-leading 16 wins by three or more goals.

THEY DID IT AGAIN: San Jose

tied a franchise record with 30 blocked shots on Dec. 29 against Anaheim. The Sharks had set the record with 30 blocks against the Ducks on March 27, 2013.

RARE SHUTOUT:

Calgary goaltender Kari Ramo’s first career shutout on Jan. 13 (2-0 at Carolina) was also the first for the Flames since Feb. 18, 2012 (Miikka Kiprusoff).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY SHERO

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins. Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair. 38

Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.669) in team history with an all-time record of 201-93-25. His 201 wins are the second most in team history (Eddie Johnston, 232). In 2008-09, Bylsma penned one of the most remarkable starts to a head coaching career in NHL history. He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. Bylsma was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, inspiring an 18-3-4 run in the final 25 games to climb from 10th to fourth place and home-ice advantage in the opening round. Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to a pre-season trip to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point or audio from the team bench during an Evgeni Malkin hat trick, In The Room gives fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy-nominated, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. New episodes air on or around the 15th of each month. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic,’” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. Now, with In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” continued on page 62

The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Sidney Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Evgeni Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique oneon-one workout session between coach Bylsma and Kris Letang. Season Two showcased the dedication and human side of a hockey player. Joe Vitale said goodbye to his wife and kids before a road trip, and two former NHL captains, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow, said goodbye to their old teams as Ray Shero acquired them prior to the trade deadline. Chatter on the bench between James Neal and Malkin during a game highlighted their unique relationship, and the highs and lows of a long postseason run were revealed. The current season began with a trip to West Point. Lessons in leadership, teamwork and sacrifice were stressed — ideals that the 2013-14 Penguins would build upon. Tanner Glass was mic’d up during a fight, as was Pascal Dupuis — when he pulled out his own tooth! “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,” said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. During the 2013-14 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. #ASKLANGE TWITTER Q&A

MIKE LANGE @ASCENDINGSHOGUN Where in the world do you get all of your catchphrases? #AskLange “It’s probably a long, long story. But just to make it short, some of them are mine, some of them are ones that I’ve seen around and have picked up, and a lot of them have come from people in the city of Pittsburgh and surrounding areas that have been given to me by them. I take them under consideration, and I make a decision whether or not I think they’re worthy enough to put on the air and then make it work, and most of them are. So those are where they all come from over the years.” @JESSALYNN35 What made you want to start calling hockey games? #AskLange “I was kind of prodded into it when I was going to college in California. A young man that I was a roommate with had worked around hockey and he asked me, ‘why don’t you go to the amateur league here in Sacramento? I work it right now. Would you be interested?’ I said, ‘I don’t know a red line from a blue line.’ And he said, ‘you never know.’ Those were his exact words. And I went and I became kind of enthralled with it. Worked the rink, ended up working some games doing play-by-play for a college radio station and the rest is history as far as getting into the broadcast business and the game of hockey.” @DYLWINTS What is the most memorable moment you’ve ever witnessed at a hockey game? #AskLange “Well, for me personally, everybody would think it might be a Stanley Cup win; it might be a lot of highlights of Mario Lemieux and [Jaromir] Jagr and others. But to me, the most moving moment that I’ve been involved in with the Penguins organization was the tribute to the late Bob Johnson, the Penguins coach. After he died after bringing the Cup to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the city of Pittsburgh was at its finest, to me, in that moment. The players and everything, it made the tribute at the old Mellon Arena in those days. And that is the most memorable day and night I can recall in my lifetime of calling hockey.” @DANROB95 What’s it like working with the old 2-9er calling games? #AskLange “The old 2-9er is absolutely superb. He’s one of the best gentlemen that I’ve ever run across as far as a working partner. He is a terrific human being and he’s getting up there, so he is now, really, the old 2-9er. He’s not the young 2-9er anymore, he’s the old 2-9er.” 97

AYLOR PYAT

PENGUINS PROFILE:

TAYLOR PYATT BY: MARK MADDEN

Taylor Pyatt thought he’d be one of the New York Rangers’ healthy scratches when the Penguins hosted the Rangers on Jan. 3. Instead, he played a regular shift for the Penguins. What a difference a day can make. The Penguins claimed Pyatt on waivers Jan. 2. The next night saw the 6-foot-4, 230-pound left wing play 11:44 in a 5-2 victory over his previous employer. “It was strange,” Pyatt said after. “It’s definitely nice to get a win against the old team right off the bat. “Lots of emotions over the last 24 hours. I got put on waivers, then I got picked up by the top team in the Eastern Conference. It’s pretty fortunate to land here.” The Penguins are fortunate Pyatt was available. Pyatt provides a much-needed big body, but he can skate, too. That’s a must in coach Dan Bylsma’s high-tempo system. “When I’m playing well, I’m going to get my feet moving,” Pyatt said. “I use skating and my size to protect the puck. That’s when I have my best games. “I felt pretty good tonight. I want to continue to build, and find a role on this team.” continued on page 111

109

continued from page 109

Pyatt, 32, is a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Before joining the Penguins, he had 136 goals and 140 assists in 825 NHL games. His best season was 2006-07, when Pyatt netted 23 goals in 76 games with Vancouver. Pyatt has a fair share of postseason experience, posting 10 goals and 14 assists in 69 career Stanley Cup playoff games. Pyatt had clearly fallen out of favor with the Rangers. Prior to joining the Penguins, he hadn’t dressed for a game since Dec. 12. Pyatt had just one assist in 22 games with the Rangers. When he did get a jersey, his ice time was often minimal. “Tonight was the first game I’ve played in a while,” Pyatt said after helping the Penguins vanquish his previous club. “I was scratched quite a while in New York. It took me a few shifts to try and get my legs under me. But I felt pretty comfortable as the game went on.” Switching teams isn’t easy. It’s not a matter of just throwing on a different sweater and jumping over the boards, as Pyatt testified. “There are a lot of things I was trying to digest today,” Pyatt said. “A lot of the systems and stuff. Some of the adjustments on the forecheck. We get two continued on page 113

guys in there and get a lot of pressure. That’s going to be a fun system to play. I’m excited about learning more and being a part of the team.” Pyatt’s role is probably a long way from being determined. He often skated on Brandon Sutter’s wing vs. the Rangers, but injuries have made the Penguins’ lineup a very liquid situation throughout the season. “The team has a lot of injuries,” Pyatt said. “I’m just trying to step in and find a role. I want to be solid defensively. To be on a real good third or fourth line where we have some good shifts in the offensive zone. Chip in offensively when I can.” Pyatt learned one thing during his first game as a Penguin: It’s better to play for them than against them, especially given the team’s showing so far this season. “It was always tough to play against [the Penguins], especially in this building,” Pyatt said. “They always came out so hard, and are really aggressive on the forecheck. We did that tonight and created some turnovers. It was fun to be a part of it.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

When the 2014 P&G Gymnastics SPONSORED LOCALLY BY Championships come to Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center in August, there will be two special fans cheering on competitors in the four-day event. Bela Karolyi, one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches, and Carly Patterson, 2004 All-Around Olympic Gold medalist, visited Pittsburgh to check out the venue and to talk about the significance of this event which is being held for the first time in Pittsburgh. The 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships, USA Gymnastics’ national championships, showcase the country’s best male and female gymnasts. It also will determine the U.S. champions and the U.S. national team for the junior and senior elite levels. BELA KAROLYI The nationals also traditionally serve as part of the selection process for the U.S. Team for the World Championships. Simone Biles and Sam Mikulak are the reigning women’s and men’s U.S. all-around champions, respectively. The 2014 schedule will be: • Thursday, Aug. 21 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Friday, Aug. 22 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Saturday, Aug. 23 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Sunday, Aug. 24 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors. continued on page 133

“Wow! What a beautiful arena,” Karolyi says of CONSOL Energy Center on his first visit to the venue. “What an excellent place to perform.” Patterson agrees, “CONSOL Energy Center looks like a great place. I’m excited to be here.” Karolyi says, “I’ll be here rooting and encouraging all of the participants to do their best.” The long-time coach and influential figure in gymnastics, Karolyi now has snowy white hair, and his passion for gymnastics and his signature mustache are as vibrant as ever. Making a round of Pittsburgh media to promote the upcoming P&G Gymnastics Championships, Karolyi talked about the significance of the championships, his career and the future, as well as the rich history of gymnastics. “We could have a world changer here in Pittsburgh with the world medalists who will be here,” Karolyi says. The standards of gymnastics are higher than ever before, according to Karolyi who says that people will not be able to imagine the spectacular athletic CARLY PATTERSON performances that they will see at the 2014 championships. “It will be a great moment in Pittsburgh gymnastics,” he says, adding, “Who knows who will make history? There could be another Nadia [Comaneci] or Gabby [Douglas].” “It will be inspiring,” he says. “The P&G Gymnastics Championships are a unique opportunity to see the best in the world,” Karolyi says. Patterson, who has experienced some great moments in gymnastics history herself, shares this view. “It’s an exciting time for the sport,” she says, pointing out that the 2014 championship will draw the likes of 2012 Olympic Team Gold Medalists Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney, and Biles. “It is the biggest competition of the year,” says Carly pointing out that the best gymnasts in the nation, juniors and seniors will come to Pittsburgh to compete for the country’s highest honors in the sport. For local gymnasts and fans of the sport, Patterson says, “You’re lucky when it comes to your city. We will have the best in the United States, boys and girls, competing. It’s the chance to enjoy your sport firsthand and to see world class athletes in your backyard.” continued on page 134

She recalls watching championship performances when she was a young gymnast herself and says that it was inspiring and motivational to her to see high caliber gymnasts vying for top honors. Besides designating gymnastics new national champions and recognizing the individuals’ years of work to hone their performances, Karolyi says, it is “the moment” that is the dream of many young athletes. “Kids are working 8-10 years to get to the national championships.” Karolyi says that for young gymnasts who dream of being champions, the JAKE DALTON impact of witnessing a live competition for national honors can impress and motivate them. “It is the life-time chance to see athletes perform at this level,” he says. “Thousands of kids will come and go home dreaming,” Karolyi says. “Let’s embrace this competition and give kids the opportunity to get inspired. People will be glad that they did,” he says. What attracts Karolyi to the sport of gymnastics? “It’s unique and beautiful,” he says. Floor exercise is his favorite part of gymnastic competition. He calls it a showcase of athletic ability and strength combined with music, dance and expression. “It’s a beautiful combination” he says. When she was competing, Patterson says, “Yes, beam was always my favorite event and to have a dismount named after me that is still one of the hardest dismounts you can do makes me really proud of that. My favorite part of competition now is just watching all the young talent getting better and better and doing so well. It is so nice to sit back and relax and enjoy my sport in a different light, especially knowing that I achieved my ultimate goal in gymnastics.” Discussing what it takes to make a champion, Karolyi says, “The element of performance is needed in addition to the mental element, the drive, soul and feelings.” Mental strength, high difficulty performance and attitude are all necessary to success, he says. Patterson says that excellence in gymnastics teaches and exacts “dedication, commitment and lots of hard work.” Its lessons have relevance for her now as she pursues a college degree from Texas Women’s University and a career in public speaking. On her rise to the top of the world of women’s gymnastics, Patterson laughs and says, “Looking at early videos, no one would have expected it.” continued on page 137

Known as one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches and a leader in the sport, Karolyi had a somewhat ironic career as a gymnast. He has produced 28 Olympians, nine Olympic champions, 15 world champions, 12 European champions and six U.S. national champions and says that he struggled in the sport as an athlete in college. “I thought who in the world created this crazy sport.” It was a required study in his physical education training. He says that he was almost “kicked out” of the university over the gymnastics test. His wife Marta, herself a world renowned gymnastics coach, played a crucial role in his gymnastics career. “I met a young lady. She was a great gymnast. We shared a dream together,” he says. Of her gymnastics career, Patterson says, “It was just one of those things that was meant to be.” She confirms that when she attended her cousin’s gymnastics-themed birthday party, “I fell in love with it. My cousin was not a gymnast. She just had her party there.” Laughing, Patterson adds, “She says that I owe her.” Entering the sport at age six, Patterson became the top gymnast in the world in a decade. As a Level 10 gymnast in 2000, she watched Elite gymnasts at a competition and says, “I knew then that I wanted to be like those girls. I knew that I had four SHAWN JOHNSON years to work my butt off to be ready.” “In 2000 a lot happened. I went Elite from Level 10,” Patterson says. She also remembers dealing with her family’s move to another city and having to change gym’s which she says turned out to be a blessing. “I had to keep an eye on the end goal, stay healthy and keep working,” she says. In the 2003 World Championships, she won 2nd in the All-Around competition, and a year later, she became the U.S. National Co-Champion, and went on to be the first American woman to take the Olympic Gold for the All-Around in 20 years. continued on page 138

Patterson says that gymnasts have a “special connection” whether they are Olympians or beginners in their first year. To all of the gymnasts who share the dream of being the best, Patterson says, “Gymnastics is such a great sport. Even if you don’t go to the Olympics or get a scholarship, it’s a great foundation, develops motor skills and teaches a lot about your body.” She adds, “Be proud just to be a gymnast. You are doing something that not everyone can do.” Asked about the future of the sport of gymnastics, Karolyi says, “There have been crucial moments in the history of gymnastics when I’ve thought ‘This is the most intense and highest performance of human capacity’.” He cites as examples performances by Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. Comaneci is the only gymnast to ever score perfect 10 in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. In 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles, the energetic and physical performance of Mary Lou Retton earned her the all-around gymnastics championship. “The sport is ever developing in difficulty, the components, dance and music. I don’t believe there is a limit now,” Karolyi says. JOHN OROZCO On this topic, Patterson says, “I have already seen the sport of gymnastics rise so much after the 2004 Olympics and it has been great to watch. I only see good things for the future and for our country to keep dominating like we have been!” Citing Retton’s “lovely personality” and “fiery performance,” Karolyi says, “Mary Lou turned the page on gymnastics toward making it the nation’s number one sport.” He points out that women’s gymnastics is the most watched sport in the country. Karolyi calls Retton, “Mary Lou, my sunshine of my coaching career.” He says that unlike some youngsters who were quiet and perhaps intimidated by his coaching style, Retton was bubbly and enthusiastic and enjoyed every second of training and competing. Looking ahead to the next Olympic Games in 2016, Karolyi says, “We are going to try to make it. We will probably retire after 2016,” he says noting that he and his wife have been involved in the sport for some 50 years. “We deserve to retire,” he says, and then after a moment’s pause he adds, “We will never stop contributing as much as we can.”

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in Cranberry in the summer of 2015, will feature two sheets of ice and serve as the Penguins’ official practice rink — but, as Penguins CEO David Morehouse said, “it will be much more than a hockey rink.” The complex will be the first medical facility in the country to focus specifically on hockey-relating training, rehab and injury prevention. “It will be a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility right here in Cranberry,” Morehouse said. UPMC will build the 180,000 square foot facility at an estimated cost of $70 million. The complex will offer expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy, imaging and sports-performance training. “The facility that we are planning here will comprise almost 50,000 square feet of clinical space for world-class orthopaedic and therapy programs,” said Liz Condordia, UPMC executive vice president. continued on page 143

is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. If you are interested in donating to the Heads Up Pittsburgh program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 152 136

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 156 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140 156

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 11th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regularseason games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…

In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.

The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.

And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. 178 continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164 181

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164 180

teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168 184

167 183

continued from page 183 167

PLAYOFFS

Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straightahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING

Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-totape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position continued on page 184 200

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET

Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN

We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com. 208 192

DAN BYLSMA PENGUINS ALL-TIME WINNINGEST COACH BY: MIKE PRISUTA

A mere 55 games into his career as an AHL head coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in February of 2009, Dan Bylsma found himself skeptical about accepting an offer to take over behind the Pittsburgh bench without first being assured he’d still have a place in the Penguins organization if his impromptu promotion to the NHL didn’t work out. General Manager Ray Shero provided it. The rest is literally history. “I thought he had a future as a coach,” Shero said. “He ended up expediting the process rather quickly.” Bylsma won 18 games and lost just three in regulation in his 25-game NHL regular-season baptism. In June of 2009, Bylsma and the Penguins won the Stanley Cup. For the most part they’ve been winning ever since. On Jan. 7, Bylsma and the Penguins beat Vancouver, 5-4 in a shootout, for Bylsma’s 233rd regular-season victory, a win that continued on page 212

surpassed Eddie Johnston’s total of 232 for the most in franchise history. Bylsma’s 36 career playoff victories are also a franchise record. His latest milestone came as no surprise to those who have helped Bylsma achieve it this season. Following is a sampling of reaction to and appreciation of Bylsma, his staff and Bylsma’s recordsetting status from the Penguins locker room:

MATT NISKANEN: “His hockey IQ is really high as a coach. He’ll joke about it all the time, he didn’t have that as a player but as a coach I think he’s really smart. Very detailed, deals with players, I think he gets a lot out of a lot of guys. “You really want to play for a coach that’s in your corner and wants you to do better and is there for team success. That’s his best attribute, just the way he communicates and the way he deals with players. It’s not like that everywhere, for sure. Different coaches around the league are not like that, not as open, there’s not the communication, they’re not as positive, for sure. “I’m a big believer in the details that we preach here, that he preaches here. It shows results. I’ve bought into it since the first moment I got here. He’s helped me become a lot better player in my time here.”

ROB SCUDERI: “He comes in with the same attitude every day. He has a high-revving motor. He’s excited to do what he does. He’s excited to be a coach and you can tell he’s grateful for the opportunity he has here. And when he comes in with that energy I think it rubs off on everybody. “When you look at the injuries we’ve had this year and the fact the team has been able to stay even keel and be able to play their continued on page 215

game and win, I think it speaks volumes for the coaching staff in general. “It’s doing it well, your daily execution of it, paying attention to the details of the game. There are certainly some wrinkles here that are different from other teams, but in the whole league there might be three or four systems that you can play, and there literally might be a difference of 10 to 15 feet on the ice. It’s not a huge difference, I just think with the way the coaching staff preaches the details and is good with the group and also with individuals working on their game, I’m not surprised to see that he set the record so fast.”

PAUL MARTIN: “They do a good job of scouting other teams and preparing us for the games and who we’re playing. They definitely put in a lot of time. And I think the most important thing is they make it fun to come to the rink. It’s enjoyable to play games and practice here, that atmosphere definitely makes it more fun. “I think he’s a players’ coach. I think he’s easy to get along with. He definitely has expectations for each player and what they have to do to help the team. The main thing is everyone knows what their role is and what to bring to the team.” CHRIS KUNITZ: “The first part is the way the organization treats the players. It’s a lot of fun to come to work every day and then the coaching staff makes that an environment where you’re pushed to go out and succeed. It’s not just good enough to win; you gotta go out and strive to become the best team every single season.” RAY SHERO’S response to Bylsma’s most recent full-season body of work was a two-year contract extension and an emphatic declaration — “He’s my coach” — after the Penguins had been swept from last season’s Eastern Conference Final by Boston. “How I feel about Dan as a coach didn’t change in a week,” Shero maintained. “It’s easy, it’s almost like when you know someone is a good player. “Who do you get that’s going to be better?” 215

KUNITZ: FROM OBSCURITY TO OLYMPIAN BY: MICHELLE CRECHIOLO

Years ago, Chris Kunitz wasn’t even being scouted to play major junior hockey. That would have been the traditional step for him and it’s what he wanted to do — except there was a lack of interest in the Regina, Saskatchewan native. So he ended up playing Junior A (also known as Tier II) hockey for the Melville Millionaires of his hometown Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, where he again was not scouted — this time by NHL teams — and went undrafted. After two seasons with Melville, Kunitz decided to play college hockey at Ferris State University so that he would have an education to fall back on if collegiate hockey ended up being the highest level he reached. However, he finally got people’s attention after a tremendous senior season — where he scored 79 points, was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award as the best college hockey player and led the Bulldogs to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. And that earned him a free-agent contract with the Anaheim Ducks. 234

Though his adversity didn’t end there — he was placed on waivers twice in the first month of his full NHL season and was later traded to Pittsburgh two seasons after winning the Stanley Cup with Anaheim — Kunitz continued to work through it all and prove all of the doubters wrong with what he has been able to do in his NHL career. And now, over 10 years later, he has earned the right to represent Canada at the Olympics for the first time in his hockey career. “It’s a really good story, to be honest,” 2007 Penguins and Team USA head coach Dan Bylsma said. “A guy comes out of nowhere a long time ago and keeps going, keeps playing well, has played great and I think rightfully so earned a spot on that team.” Kunitz received a call on Jan. 7, the roster deadline day, from Oilers president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe — part of Team Canada’s management group — letting him know that he was going to Sochi prior to the press conference scheduled for 11 a.m. Though it was early enough to be a wakeup call, Kunitz admitted he was already awake just like a kid on Christmas morning. “Probably a little less sleep than I 2009 wanted last night with the anticipation and excitement,” he said. “I guess it all paid off and it was obviously great news to share with my family. My wife [was the first person I called]. I got to talk to the kids really quick and they were obviously really excited; then I got to talk to my parents because they’re in Pittsburgh too, so it was a really nice and special moment. “One of the best surprises ever. It’s been a lot of fun. . . It was obviously a special moment this morning and a lot of great congratulations from teammates and friends for making the team.” His linemate Sidney Crosby enjoyed seeing Kunitz process such tremendous news. “Really happy [for him],” Crosby said. “He’s worked hard and he’s done a lot of things to earn the right to play on the team.

continued from page 235

When you’re able to kind of go through those things or share those experiences with teammates, especially at this level, [it’s awesome]. Making the Canadian Olympic team, it’s important to every guy — but to see it up close on a teammate, a linemate, it’s pretty neat. So I’m definitely happy for him.” Making any Olympic team — especially Canada’s — for the first time is tremendous for any player. But considering Kunitz’s situation and age of 34, it’s even sweeter knowing that this was probably his last chance to go. “Being able to take from the talent pool that they have, being selected to go I think is such an honor,” he said. “With it only happening every four years and maybe not knowing if it’s going to come again I guess it’s probably one of those things that make it such a special honor. And that being said, you’ve still got to go out and contribute and produce once you get there.” That shouldn’t be a problem, as he has contributing and producing at an incredibly consistent pace the last two seasons for the Penguins. In 2012-13, Kunitz posted 20 goals and 52 points in 48 games to finish second on team in scoring (behind only Crosby, 56) and ranked seventh in the NHL. Through the first 47 games of the current campaign, Kunitz posted 24 goals and his 49 points to rank second, once again, on the Penguins and sixth (tied) in the NHL. Heading into the game against Washington on Jan. 15, Kunitz’s 23 goals were tied with Crosby for fourth in the NHL and second most among all Canadian players behind only Chicago’s Patrick Sharp (25 goals). Kunitz ranked second in the NHL with 11 power-play tallies and a plus-22 rating (tied), and overall, his 47 points ranked seventh. “We like the things he brings, we like the tenacity,” Team Canada executive director Steve Yzerman said. “He’s having a tremendous year, you can’t deny that. He had a great year last year. He’s a great net-front guy on the power play, he does a lot of really good things.” 236
