something more than the regional health plan his work provided, he searched for one that offered affordability, a broader network, and a history of reliable care. GAME NOTES BY: BOB GROVE

THE SERIES

Tonight the Penguins host the Phoenix Coyotes for the first time in more than two years . The last time the Coyotes played in Pittsburgh was on March 5, 2012, current Coyotes’ defenseman Zbynek Michalek and Chris Kunitz scored 3:01 apart in the first period and Marc-Andre Fleury made 36 saves in a 2-1 Penguins’ victory. . . The teams met earlier this season in Glendale, Ariz ., where Michalek — who hadn’t scored a goal since that March game here against his current team — scored again along with Mike Ribeiro and Radim Vrbata as Phoenix claimed a 3-1 victory on Feb . 1 . Evgeni Malkin had the lone Pittsburgh goal against Mike Smith, who made 23 saves . . . The Penguins had won three consecutive games against Phoenix until that February loss, and they are 6-3-0 in their last nine games against Phoenix . . . After moving to Glendale from Winnipeg for the 1996-97 season, the Coyotes went 8-3-0 with two ties in their first 13 games against the Penguins . . . Phoenix has gone four games without a power play goal against Pittsburgh (0-for-18) . . . Pittsburgh has been held to two or fewer goals in four of its last six games overall against the Coyotes as well as four of its last six home games against them . The Penguins are 3-1-0 in their last four home games against the Coyotes and have won two straight; they have never won three straight home games against them . . . Ribeiro is in his first season with Phoenix but brings with him a history of putting up points against the Penguins . Among active continued on page 7

players with at least 20 career points against Pittsburgh, Ribeiro’s points-per-game average of 1 .227 against the Penguins is fourth, trailing only Jason Spezza (1 .228), Joe Thornton (1 .236) and Teemu Selanne (1 .478) . Ribeiro has nine goals and 27 points in 22 games against Pittsburgh . THE PENGUINS

This is the third game of a four-game homestand for Pittsburgh, which faces Los Angeles on Thursday to close it out before playing in Columbus on Friday night and returning here Sunday to face Chicago . The Penguins are in the midst of a 12-game stretch in which they play Western Conference teams eight times . . . Kris Letang returned to practice March 17 for the first time since suffering a stroke and reported no problems during the workouts . . . Malkin has points in four straight games against Phoenix (4+4) . . . Sidney Crosby has been held off the scoresheet in three of his last five games against the Coyotes but has 10 points in his other four games against them (3+7) . . . Pittsburgh was coming off a homeand-home sweep at the hands of Philadelphia last week when it hosted Dallas, a game in which Chris Kunitz and James Neal both returned to the lineup and Kunitz had a goal and an assist in a 5-1 victory . The line of Kunitz, Crosby and Lee Stempniak combined for eight points in the game, with Stempniak scoring his first goal in a Pittsburgh uniform. . . Brandon Sutter, who played his 400th continued on page 8

NHL game in Philadelphia on March 15, scored his team-leading third short-handed goal in the win over the Stars . THE COYOTES

This is the second game of a three-game road trip for the Coyotes, who played in New York against the Rangers last night and play in New Jersey on Thursday before returning home to host Minnesota on Saturday . . . The Coyotes are coached by former Pittsburgh center Dave Tippett, who is the winningest coach in franchise history. Also a former coach in Dallas, he began play last week with a record of 188-121-53 ( .593) with Phoenix and had 459 NHL victories to his credit since becoming a head coach in 2002-03 . The only current coaches with more victories in that time span were the Hawks’ Joel Quenneville (461) and the Wings’ Mike Babcock (475) . . . Phoenix forward Paul Bissonnette had a career-high eight points after facing the Kings in LA last week . He was drafted in the fourth round in 2003 by the Penguins and later claimed on waivers by the Coyotes . . . The Coyotes moved up to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference last Monday with a 4-3 win in Los Angeles, thanks to Jeff Halpern’s goal with 3:05 to play .

WE’RE HERE FOR THE HOCKEY.

LET’S GO PENS

IS PROUD TO BE A PITTSBURGH-BASED BRAND.

AROUND THE NHL BY: MIKE PRISUTA

STREAK SNAPPED: Toronto’s 4-2 loss to Washington on March 16 ended a run of 25 consecutive games (20-0-5) in which the Maple Leafs had earned at least a point when captain Dion Phaneuf had produced at least one point. Phaneuf had a goal and an assist in the loss to the Caps, which also snapped a seven-game run of Toronto getting at least a point (4-0-3) when he scored.

BETTER THIS SEASON: Tampa Bay achieved a record of 37-24-7 through 68 games in part by going 15-10-7 in one-goal games. The Lightning had been an NHL-worst 5-12-4 in one-goal games last season.

ST. LOUIS STANDARD: Ryan Miller went 7-0-1 in his first eight games with the Blues after being acquired on March 2 and became the first goaltender in Blues’ history to record at least a point in his first eight starts with the team. Miller stopped 180 of 193 shots for a save percentage of .933 in his first eight starts for St. Louis while helping the Blues surpass 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history.

FOUR-FIGURE CANUCK: Captain Henrik Sedin became the first player to appear in 1,000 NHL games all in a Vancouver uniform on March 12.

POWER OUTAGE: The Bruins won 46 of their first 68 games (46-17-5) despite having an NHL-low 190 power-play opportunities.

STINGY DEVILS: New Jersey’s 29-26-13 record through 68 games was compiled in part thanks to the Devils allowing an NHL-low 25.5 shots against per game, being assessed an NHL-low 8.1 penalty minutes per game and ranking No. 1 in the NHL in penalty killing (188 of 216, 87.0 percent).

HOT AGAIN: Winnipeg’s Dustin Byfuglien had two goals against Dallas on March 16, giving him six goals over his last six games. Byfuglien also had a streak of five goals in four games this season (Nov. 15-21).

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENS TRADE SKATES FOR PLATES BY: ADDISON SMITH

Once the spring begins to roll in, the Pittsburgh Penguins begin to prepare for the playoffs — and also take their skates off for a night to wait tables . The Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the 2014 Skates & Plates Charity Gala presented by Trib Total Media on March 13 at the CONSOL Energy Center . The ice was covered and the inside of the arena was transformed to look like a five-star restaurant, with elaborate centerpieces and hockey players roaming around in tuxedos to raise money for the Penguins Foundation, the Mario Lemieux Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation . The event raised over $300,000 for the charities . Off came the skates and on went the silvery blue polka dot bowties and matching vests as the team served tables . The players’ primary objectives throughout the night were to make sure a glass was never empty, food ended up on the table and that nothing was spilled . Another goal for the members of the Penguins is to become the night’s top tip receiver, an honor given to defenseman Robert Bortuzzo last year . Bortuzzo laid out the game plan to earn top tips and who he believes is his toughest competition . “You have to be quick [to win the tips battle] . You have to be on the ball . I know the pressure is there,” Bortuzzo explained . “I know Joe Vitale is usually pretty quick on his feet at these things, continued on page 26

25

continued from page 25

so that could be the guy that’s going to knock me off .” However, it wasn't Vitale that stole the crown this year . Defenseman Simon Despres took home the highest-tip total, with Paul Martin and Brandon Sutter finishing second and third, respectively . Every year the guests and players are treated to a guest speaker from a foundation receiving donations from the evening . This year’s guest was Sydney Willig, a 10-year-old with cystic fibrosis . She spoke on cystic fibrosis and herself, admitting her favorite player is Sidney Crosby . By the end of her speech, Willig had moved some guests to tears . Also receiving donations from the Skates & Plates Charity Gala presented by Trib Total Media was the Mario Lemieux Foundation . President of the foundation Tom Grealish said that the money will go to new projects . “We are planning on opening more playrooms,” Grealish said . “We have a couple big announcements in the hopper that we’ll be coming out with in the spring . We stick to our mission, which is neonatal research, cancer research and the Austin’s Playroom . There’s more to follow .”

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins. Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to a pre-season trip to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point or audio from the team bench during an Evgeni Malkin hat trick, In The Room gives fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy-nominated, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. New episodes air on or around the 15th of each month. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic,’” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. Now, with In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” continued on page 62

The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Sidney Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Evgeni Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique oneon-one workout session between coach Bylsma and Kris Letang. Season Two showcased the dedication and human side of a hockey player. Joe Vitale said goodbye to his wife and kids before a road trip, and two former NHL captains, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow, said goodbye to their old teams as Ray Shero acquired them prior to the trade deadline. Chatter on the bench between James Neal and Malkin during a game highlighted their unique relationship, and the highs and lows of a long postseason run were revealed. The current season began with a trip to West Point. Lessons in leadership, teamwork and sacrifice were stressed — ideals that the 2013-14 Penguins would build upon. Tanner Glass was mic’d up during a fight, as was Pascal Dupuis — when he pulled out his own tooth! “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,” said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

JOIN THE RUSH! Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2013-14 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several special Student Rush nights will be held. #ASKREIRDEN

TWITTER Q&A

TODD REIRDEN @BRIANNARASK4087 If you weren’t a coach in the NHL what would you be doing? #AskReirden “I would be a coach somewhere. I love the chance to use hockey as a vehicle to teach young people not just about hockey, but also about life. I’ve enjoyed coaching young people ever since I got done playing and when I was running hockey schools in the summers. I just love to be a part of development of young people both on and off the ice.” @ALEXPOPEEZ Do you own a pet? If so, what do you have and what is their name? #AskReirden “I have two pets, two miniature schnauzers. One is 13-years-old, she’s a girl named Mandy. We just recently got a new puppy that is also a miniature schnauzer, and his name is Scruffy.” @DANNYR11 Playing with Bylsma at Bowling Green, did you ever imagine getting to coach with him at the NHL level? #AskReirden “I never thought I would coach with him at the NHL level. This was something where if you had mentioned this to us when we were playing together there and were obviously good friends, I don’t think we ever could have dreamed up a scenario like this. I think that’s the great part about this — it wasn’t something we had by design. We kind of went our own separate ways for probably 15 years and re-hooked back up, so it’s great to be back with him.” @HUMTHING33 What are the top three skills every D-man should have? #AskReirden “Number one would be the ability to skate. You have to be able to skate in today’s NHL to defend and also add to the offense, particularly with the way our team plays. Number two would be having the ability to make a great outlet pass. The less time you spend in the defensive zone the better. I put a lot of emphasis on our defensemen making the first pass to get out of the defensive zone as fast as possible. Number three would be having a good stick and being able to defend. Stick on puck is so important today — taking away the dangerous areas and taking away time and space from the opponents.” 97

ELITE TRYOUTS

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite are holding tryouts for the 2014-15 seasons within the next month for all 13 teams. These teams include eight boys’ teams and five girls’ teams. Age groups for the boys’ teams range from 2005 birth years all the way up to U18s. The age groups for the girls’ teams are U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19s. In only two seasons, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program has become one of the premier AAA organizations in the country. In its first year, PPE experienced a significant improvement in the national rankings (average increase of 14 spots). Improvement continued in the second year as PPE currently has six teams that are ranked in the top 15 nationally and 10 teams of the 13 teams are ranked in the top 25. Through the involvement of the Pittsburgh Penguins, this organization has been able to add structure, helped to improve the quality of coaching and provide unique opportunities for participants. Penguin’s alumni Dave Hannan and Mark Recchi are all head coaching teams this upcoming season. Randy Hillier volunteers as a skill development and coached consultant. Bryan Trottier currently serves on the Board of Directors for the organization. Registration is underway and we look forward to fielding very competitive teams this season to have even more successful seasons. If your child is interested in trying out for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, please visit pittsburghpenguinselite.com or contact Kathy Pippy at penselitegirls@aol.com. 101

TIER 1 DISTRICT AND NATIONALS The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite is proud to send three of its teams to compete for a national championship next month. From the boy’s side, the 1999s will be representing Pittsburgh as they look to compete for a shot at the prestigious national championship. The U14 and U16 Elite girls will compete in their respective age divisions as they advanced through the Mid-American district championships as well. The districts championships for the boys’ teams were held March 13-16 in Columbus, Ohio, while the girls teams played in Culver, Indiana. The National Championships are to be held in two different locations for the boys’ and girls’ teams. For the boys, the games will be played in Green Bay, Wisconsin while the girl’s teams will play in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The Championship for each division will take place April 2-6. Very few youth hockey players get the opportunity to play in such an event and on behalf of the Pittsburgh Penguins, we wish all athletes heading to both Districts and Nationals the best of luck!

EFF ZATKOF

PENGUINS PROFILE:

JEFF ZATKOFF BY: MARK MADDEN

Relief goaltending isn’t like relief pitching. If a goalie change gets made, it’s quite likely that the team making the switch is in trouble. March 16 at CONSOL Energy Center was no exception to that rule. Philadelphia had put three pucks behind Penguins starter Marc-Andre Fleury and led 3-0 when Jeff Zatkoff entered the crease just 15:05 into the game. Zatkoff did well, stopping 19 of 20 Flyers’ shots. But the Penguins couldn’t quite complete a spirited comeback, dropping a 4-3 decision. “Not that we came out bad,” Zatkoff said. “I thought we came out with a lot of energy. But we took too many penalties. A couple of offensive-zone penalties. Special teams have won us a lot of games this year. Certainly not [this one]. “We weren’t able to get the kills. We weren’t able to bury on the power play. That was the difference in the game.” Zatkoff’s analysis was on the money. The Penguins were 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Flyers went 2-for-3 with the man advantage. The defeat duly noted, Zatkoff’s performance was another step in the 26-year-old rookie establishing credibility as an NHL netminder. Zatkoff made a few big stops to keep the Penguins in the contest. continued on page 111

109

“IT WAS NOT [FLEURY’S] FAULT WHATSOEVER. HE BATTLED. HE PLAYED HARD. BUT SOMETIMES YOU’RE JUST TRYING TO DO ANYTHING TO CHANGE THE MOMENTUM. WE KIND OF LEFT HIM OUT THERE ON THOSE GOALS. GRADE-A CHANCES. AT THAT POINT, YOU’RE JUST TRYING TO SWITCH THE MOMENTUM AND SPARK YOUR TEAM.” ~ JEFF ZATKOFF

continued from page 109

Zatkoff placed no blame on Fleury, and rightly so. The Penguins’ starting goalie made several huge saves, but the Flyers overwhelmed the Penguins down low. “It was not [Fleury’s] fault whatsoever,” Zatkoff said. “He battled. He played hard. But sometimes you’re just trying to do anything to change the momentum. We kind of left him out there on those goals. Grade-A chances. At that point, you’re just trying to switch the momentum and spark your team.” The Penguins took advantage of the spark Zatkoff provided and scored the next two goals, cutting their deficit to 3-2. But Philadelphia’s Matt Read netted a short-handed goal at 12:11 of the second period. That tally proved to be the game-winner. “They had a two-on-one coming down, and Read just beat me with a good shot,” Zatkoff said. “Obviously, I’d like to make the save. But credit to him. continued on page 113

“They’re a good offensive team. They’re going to create chances. When we took over the game, it was because we started playing in their zone. But they’re good. They cycle, and they transition really well. They can score on the rush, and if you put them on the power play, they’re good at that, too.” The win allowed Philadelphia to complete a sweep of a homeand-home series against the Penguins. The Flyers won 4-0 at Philly the day before. “It wasn’t the weekend we wanted,” Zatkoff said. “But there’s a lot of time left to keep going and get ready for the playoffs.” The loss left Zatkoff with a 10-4-1 record. His goals-against average stood at 2.14 and his save percentage at .914, both solid marks. Zatkoff sparkled for the Penguins in November, going 4-0 with a 1.60 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage. Fleury figures to get the bulk of the goaltending work for the remainder of the season. But Zatkoff is ready, whether as a starter or in relief. “It’s not ideal to come in cold, but that’s my job,” Zatkoff said. “Come in and try to settle things down. I thought the team responded and played really well after that.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

GYMNASTICS LEGENDS DESCRIBE THRILL OF UPCOMING NATIONALS

When the 2014 P&G Gymnastics SPONSORED LOCALLY BY Championships come to Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center in August, there will be two special fans cheering on competitors in the four-day event. Bela Karolyi, one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches, and Carly Patterson, 2004 All-Around Olympic Gold medalist, visited Pittsburgh to check out the venue and to talk about the significance of this event which is being held for the first time in Pittsburgh. The 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships, USA Gymnastics’ national championships, showcase the country’s best male and female gymnasts. It also will determine the U.S. champions and the U.S. national team for the junior and senior elite levels. BELA KAROLYI The nationals also traditionally serve as part of the selection process for the U.S. Team for the World Championships. Simone Biles and Sam Mikulak are the reigning women’s and men’s U.S. all-around champions, respectively. The 2014 schedule will be: • Thursday, Aug. 21 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Friday, Aug. 22 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Saturday, Aug. 23 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Sunday, Aug. 24 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors. continued on page 133

“Wow! What a beautiful arena,” Karolyi says of CONSOL Energy Center on his first visit to the venue. “What an excellent place to perform.” Patterson agrees, “CONSOL Energy Center looks like a great place. I’m excited to be here.” Karolyi says, “I’ll be here rooting and encouraging all of the participants to do their best.” The long-time coach and influential figure in gymnastics, Karolyi now has snowy white hair, and his passion for gymnastics and his signature mustache are as vibrant as ever. Making a round of Pittsburgh media to promote the upcoming P&G Gymnastics Championships, Karolyi talked about the significance of the championships, his career and the future, as well as the rich history of gymnastics. “We could have a world changer here in Pittsburgh with the world medalists who will be here,” Karolyi says. The standards of gymnastics are higher than ever before, according to Karolyi who says that people will not be able to imagine the spectacular athletic CARLY PATTERSON performances that they will see at the 2014 championships. “It will be a great moment in Pittsburgh gymnastics,” he says, adding, “Who knows who will make history? There could be another Nadia [Comaneci] or Gabby [Douglas].” “It will be inspiring,” he says. “The P&G Gymnastics Championships are a unique opportunity to see the best in the world,” Karolyi says. Patterson, who has experienced some great moments in gymnastics history herself, shares this view. “It’s an exciting time for the sport,” she says, pointing out that the 2014 championship will draw the likes of 2012 Olympic Team Gold Medalists Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney, and Biles. “It is the biggest competition of the year,” says Carly pointing out that the best gymnasts in the nation, juniors and seniors will come to Pittsburgh to compete for the country’s highest honors in the sport. For local gymnasts and fans of the sport, Patterson says, “You’re lucky when it comes to your city. We will have the best in the United States, boys and girls, competing. It’s the chance to enjoy your sport firsthand and to see world class athletes in your backyard.” continued on page 134

She recalls watching championship performances when she was a young gymnast herself and says that it was inspiring and motivational to her to see high caliber gymnasts vying for top honors. Besides designating gymnastics new national champions and recognizing the individuals’ years of work to hone their performances, Karolyi says, it is “the moment” that is the dream of many young athletes. “Kids are working 8-10 years to get to the national championships.” Karolyi says that for young gymnasts who dream of being champions, the JAKE DALTON impact of witnessing a live competition for national honors can impress and motivate them. “It is the life-time chance to see athletes perform at this level,” he says. “Thousands of kids will come and go home dreaming,” Karolyi says. “Let’s embrace this competition and give kids the opportunity to get inspired. People will be glad that they did,” he says. What attracts Karolyi to the sport of gymnastics? “It’s unique and beautiful,” he says. Floor exercise is his favorite part of gymnastic competition. He calls it a showcase of athletic ability and strength combined with music, dance and expression. “It’s a beautiful combination” he says. When she was competing, Patterson says, “Yes, beam was always my favorite event and to have a dismount named after me that is still one of the hardest dismounts you can do makes me really proud of that. My favorite part of competition now is just watching all the young talent getting better and better and doing so well. It is so nice to sit back and relax and enjoy my sport in a different light, especially knowing that I achieved my ultimate goal in gymnastics.” Discussing what it takes to make a champion, Karolyi says, “The element of performance is needed in addition to the mental element, the drive, soul and feelings.” Mental strength, high difficulty performance and attitude are all necessary to success, he says. Patterson says that excellence in gymnastics teaches and exacts “dedication, commitment and lots of hard work.” Its lessons have relevance for her now as she pursues a college degree from Texas Women’s University and a career in public speaking. On her rise to the top of the world of women’s gymnastics, Patterson laughs and says, “Looking at early videos, no one would have expected it.” continued on page 137

Known as one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches and a leader in the sport, Karolyi had a somewhat ironic career as a gymnast. He has produced 28 Olympians, nine Olympic champions, 15 world champions, 12 European champions and six U.S. national champions and says that he struggled in the sport as an athlete in college. “I thought who in the world created this crazy sport.” It was a required study in his physical education training. He says that he was almost “kicked out” of the university over the gymnastics test. His wife Marta, herself a world renowned gymnastics coach, played a crucial role in his gymnastics career. “I met a young lady. She was a great gymnast. We shared a dream together,” he says. Of her gymnastics career, Patterson says, “It was just one of those things that was meant to be.” She confirms that when she attended her cousin’s gymnastics-themed birthday party, “I fell in love with it. My cousin was not a gymnast. She just had her party there.” Laughing, Patterson adds, “She says that I owe her.” Entering the sport at age six, Patterson became the top gymnast in the world in a decade. As a Level 10 gymnast in 2000, she watched Elite gymnasts at a competition and says, “I knew then that I wanted to be like those girls. I knew that I had four SHAWN JOHNSON years to work my butt off to be ready.” “In 2000 a lot happened. I went Elite from Level 10,” Patterson says. She also remembers dealing with her family’s move to another city and having to change gym’s which she says turned out to be a blessing. “I had to keep an eye on the end goal, stay healthy and keep working,” she says. In the 2003 World Championships, she won 2nd in the All-Around competition, and a year later, she became the U.S. National Co-Champion, and went on to be the first American woman to take the Olympic Gold for the All-Around in 20 years. continued on page 138

Patterson says that gymnasts have a “special connection” whether they are Olympians or beginners in their first year. To all of the gymnasts who share the dream of being the best, Patterson says, “Gymnastics is such a great sport. Even if you don’t go to the Olympics or get a scholarship, it’s a great foundation, develops motor skills and teaches a lot about your body.” She adds, “Be proud just to be a gymnast. You are doing something that not everyone can do.” Asked about the future of the sport of gymnastics, Karolyi says, “There have been crucial moments in the history of gymnastics when I’ve thought ‘This is the most intense and highest performance of human capacity’.” He cites as examples performances by Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. Comaneci is the only gymnast to ever score perfect 10 in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. In 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles, the energetic and physical performance of Mary Lou Retton earned her the all-around gymnastics championship. “The sport is ever developing in difficulty, the components, dance and music. I don’t believe there is a limit now,” Karolyi says. JOHN OROZCO On this topic, Patterson says, “I have already seen the sport of gymnastics rise so much after the 2004 Olympics and it has been great to watch. I only see good things for the future and for our country to keep dominating like we have been!” Citing Retton’s “lovely personality” and “fiery performance,” Karolyi says, “Mary Lou turned the page on gymnastics toward making it the nation’s number one sport.” He points out that women’s gymnastics is the most watched sport in the country. Karolyi calls Retton, “Mary Lou, my sunshine of my coaching career.” He says that unlike some youngsters who were quiet and perhaps intimidated by his coaching style, Retton was bubbly and enthusiastic and enjoyed every second of training and competing. Looking ahead to the next Olympic Games in 2016, Karolyi says, “We are going to try to make it. We will probably retire after 2016,” he says noting that he and his wife have been involved in the sport for some 50 years. “We deserve to retire,” he says, and then after a moment’s pause he adds, “We will never stop contributing as much as we can.”

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in Cranberry in the summer of 2015, will feature two sheets of ice and serve as the Penguins’ official practice rink — but, as Penguins CEO David Morehouse said, “it will be much more than a hockey rink.” The complex will be the first medical facility in the country to focus specifically on hockey-relating training, rehab and injury prevention. “It will be a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility right here in Cranberry,” Morehouse said. UPMC will build the 180,000 square foot facility at an estimated cost of $70 million. The complex will offer expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy, imaging and sports-performance training. “The facility that we are planning here will comprise almost 50,000 square feet of clinical space for world-class orthopaedic and therapy programs,” said Liz Condordia, UPMC executive vice president. continued on page 143

is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. If you are interested in donating to the Heads Up Pittsburgh program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 152 136

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 156 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140 156

The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. If you are interested in donating to the Project Power Play program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 159 143

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 11th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regularseason games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…

In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.

The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.

And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. 178 continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164 181

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164 180

teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168 184

167 183

continued from page 183 167

PLAYOFFS

Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straightahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING

Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-totape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position continued on page 184 200

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET

Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN

We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com. 208 192

PENGUINS COLLEGE PROSPECT:

JOSH ARCHIBALD BY: MIKE PRISUTA

For Penguins’ prospect Josh Archibald, the end to the 2013-14 season was as abrupt as the campaign that preceded it had been productive. Archibald and the University of Nebraska-Omaha fell in a postseason-opening, best-of-three, National Collegiate Hockey Conference quarterfinal series against Denver on March 13-15. The Mavericks hosted all three games and won Game One but still couldn’t finish off the Pioneers, and Archibald was held off the scoresheet in the series. That hadn’t happened often this season. “You look at 29 goals in college hockey, not many kids are doing that anymore,” Penguins assistant to the general manager Tom Fitzgerald observed. Archibald, a 5-foot-11, 176-pound winger, emerged from his 37-game season No. 3 in the nation in goals per game (29, 0.78 per) and tied for No. 18 TOM FITZGERALD in the nation in points per game (43, 1.16 per). continued on page 212

continued from page 211

A sixth-round pick in 2011 (174th overall), Archibald netted 10 goals and produced 15 points as a freshman and then upped his totals to 19 goals and 36 points as a sophomore before exploding onto the national scene this season. “He was a world junior player his freshman year,” Fitzgerald assessed. “He started off very well his freshman year. After the world juniors he kind of leveled off a bit, which is normal. Last year he picked it right back up and had a very solid year. And this year, forget about it. “He has great speed. He’s not a very big kid but he’s feisty. He uses his speed well and creates his chances by that and he’s capitalizing on them. He’s getting a ton of chances each game and you know what? He’s burying them. He’s a go-to guy. “To score 29 goals, it’s probably unrealistic to think that’s the type of guy he’ll be for us. But you know what? It’s a nice base knowing he does have the type of ability to put the puck in the back of the net.” Archibald was the top vote-getter while earning first-team All-NCHC honors and at his season’s end was one of four finalists for NCHC Player of the Year and one of three finalists for NCHC Forward of the Year. Archibald led the conference with 21 goals and 32 points in 24 NCHC games. “HE HAS GREAT Should he come to the SPEED. HE’S conclusion at some point NOT A VERY BIG prior to his senior season that KID BUT HE’S he’s done all he can do in the FEISTY. HE USES college game, the Penguins HIS SPEED WELL would welcome him to the professional ranks with AND CREATES open arms. HIS CHANCES BY Should Archibald ultimately THAT AND HE’S return to Nebraska-Omaha CAPITALIZING for the 2014-15 season, the ON THEM.” Penguins would be just fine ~ TOM FITZGERALD with that, as well. “That’s a process that we like,” Fitzgerald said. “If things like that happen [players turning pro with college continued on page 215

eligibility still remaining] then we’ve got some good prospects. “We allow these kids to finish up their year, let them discuss it with their advisors. We’re really, from top to bottom, a collegetype organization. We really have a lot of value with the college route.” Fitzgerald refers to college prospects as “marathoners.” Some, such as Beau Bennett, hit the finish line after just two college seasons. But early exits aren’t a prerequisite from the Penguins’ perspective. “There’s no rush,” Fitzgerald said. “That’s the idea when we go after college kids. They have the time to get bigger, to get stronger, play against older guys. “You gotta think a little quicker when you have the puck at the college level because your time and space is taken away. It’s a lot of zing, zing, go, go, hit, hit, hit. You get the puck, somebody’s in your face. There’s not much time and space out there. “It’s an adrenalin rush on a Friday night. Saturday night is usually a little bit slower but they rev it right back up. To me, there’s a lot of value in that. You have to make decisions quickly with the puck, when to hold onto it, when to move it, when to give-and-go, when to go to the net. You always have to keep your feet moving. “The college process allows them to really speed up their thought process, their hands, their feet, all aspects of their game. It allows guys to grow their mental part of the game as their body grows. It’s just getting the legs to catch up to the mind, strengthwise. That’s what college hockey allows for these kids.”

CAMPS & CLINICS HIGH PERFORMANCE CAMP WITH DON GRANATO The High Performance Camp with Don Granato, Head Coach of the USA Hockey U17 National Team and brother of Pittsburgh Penguins Assistant Coach Tony Granato, will be held June 13-15 at Bladerunners Warrendale. This camp is geared toward elite level hockey players. Don Granato has created a development plan specifically for this camp. This program will mimic how junior, college and professional hockey players improve their game in the off season through position specific skill development.

SCORING CAMP As the saying goes, “You can’t win, if you can’t score.” This camp will focus on the finer points of putting the puck in the net. From working on quick release to shot fakes, the players will learn everything they need to light the lamp. Players will get a chance to shoot a ton of pucks and will be put in different scoring scenarios.

DEFENSEMAN CAMP It is widely recognized that defensemen take more time to develop than forwards. The reason for this is there are more responsibilities bestowed on them. The goal of this camp is to identify these responsibilities and show the skaters how to efficiently accomplish them. The skaters will work on D specific drills that will help them make decisions quicker, become more aggressive, and develop the defensemen’s mentality.

INSTRUCTIONAL 3-ON-3 Hockey is a game of creating opportunities in small spaces. Big Ice 3-on-3 leagues do not allow players to simulate these situations. This makes it easy for them to develop bad habits. In Penguins Hockey Development’s Cross Ice 3-on-3, the players will play on a third of the ice. This ensures that the puck will always be around them, while forcing them to make quick decisions. Goalies will get plenty of realistic shots, not just breakaway after breakaway.

TUNE-UP FOR TRYOUTS AND TUNE-UP FOR GOALIES This camp provides skill development and power-skating instruction from Cliff Loya and Max Ivanov. All goalies will received instruction from Mike Chiasson and Matt Wynn.

TALKING HEALTH AND FITNESS WITH

TANNER GLASS BY: MICHELLE CRECHIOLO

Tanner Glass has earned a reputation among fans for his gritty, hard-nosed style of play and willingness to sacrifice the body, especially on the penalty kill. But what fans may not know is that Glass is just as dedicated off the ice when it comes to what he eats and how he trains. “It’s definitely been a work in progress,” Glass said of his approach to health and fitness. “I’m so much more knowledgeable now than I was even two or three years ago. I’ve always been interested in it, but it’s something I enjoy. So it doesn’t feel like work when I’m cooking or warming up or cooling down or anything like that.” Here are some of Glass’ overall thoughts on his lifestyle… TRAINING PHILOSOPHY

The 30-year-old winger averages just under 12 minutes a contest playing grinding third- and fourth-line shifts, with several intense shorthanded shifts in the mix as well. “It’s funny, my training’s evolved over the years,” he said. “Now it’s about getting the body moving properly. . . You skate all season long and you get strong on the outsides of your legs and your glutes and you develop the same muscles over and over, so in the summertime a lot of it is kind of balancing the body back out and making sure you’re moving in the proper way.” Glass continues to implement that same philosophy of keeping things balanced throughout the season, primarily in his postgame workouts. 234

“You skate all game, you get sore,” he said. “Your hip flexors will get tight, and your glutes. So you try to counter [that]. Whatever muscles work in the game, you try to do the opposite, the inverse side of it. [If you’re] skating pretty hard for a few days in a row, your hip flexors get tight. So you want to work the glutes to make sure your pelvis is in the right place and kind of keep your body in balance. That’s the main thing throughout the season, is to keep in balance and just keep the activation going. Keep the right muscles firing.” WORKOUT ROUTINE

Before Glass gets on the ice for games and even practices, it’s all about activating the muscles he’s going to use the most. He goes through the same warm-up routine before every skate, and a lot of effort went into crafting it specifically for the winger and his needs. A lot of guys will either just stretch, lift some weights or maybe play some pregame soccer, whereas Glass has incorporated a treadmill, foam roller, medicine ball and some unique, crazy-looking exercises into his routine. “This routine was given to me by my trainer,” Glass said. “His name is Brad Watson. He’s actually a chiropractor. We just kind of work together throughout the season via email and videos. Just kind of come up with this program based on my needs, what’s tight on my body, what I use to get around the ice. Because everyone’s different. I tend to be really quad-dominant, so my big focus is getting the posterior chain activated. The glutes, hamstrings, calves, things like that.” continued on page 236

235

continued from page 235

A LOT OF GUYS WILL EITHER JUST STRETCH, LIFT SOME WEIGHTS OR MAYBE PLAY SOME PREGAME SOCCER, WHEREAS GLASS HAS INCORPORATED A TREADMILL, FOAM ROLLER, MEDICINE BALL AND SOME UNIQUE, CRAZY-LOOKING EXERCISES INTO HIS ROUTINE.

DIET PHILOSOPHY

Glass clearly puts a lot of thought, effort and energy into crafting his training regimens, and the same goes for his diet. But if he had to boil his outlook down to a few words, it’s that he tries to eat as fresh as possible. “Nothing’s that’s been processed. Preservative-free,” he said. “When I go to the grocery store, I just try to stop by the meat counter and the fruits and vegetables section. Those are my main stops. I eat a little bit of granola and greens, but mainly I try to eat as fresh as I can. Aside from that, I try to keep it organic and prepare at home as much as I can.” continued on page 239

WHO’S HELPED HIM

Apart from Glass’ trainer Watson, there are two guys who have helped him develop these habits. One of them is Sidney Crosby’s trainer Andy O’Brien, who was the strength and conditioning coach for the Florida Panthers when Glass first broke into the league back in 2007. The other is Penguins CURTIS BELL athletic trainer Curtis Bell, who introduced Glass to something called ‘metabolic type testing,’ which determines what a person’s body wants to burn as far as calories go. And to Glass’ surprise, it wasn’t carbs. Most athletes tend to eat a lot of carbs because of the energy they provide, but that’s not the case anymore for Glass. “For me, my body wants to burn fat and protein over carbs where some guys might need a lot of carbs,” Glass said. “So even game days, I barely eat any carbs at all. I’m eating a lot of fat and protein, putting oil on everything, putting SCAN TO butter on things. WATCH So it’s not what TANNER GLASS you would IN ACTION DURING normally HIS WARM-UP ON think, but pittsburghpenguins.com it’s been really good for me, actually. It’s helped me become leaner, too.” 239
