Tonight the Penguins host the Carolina Hurricanes, a team against which it has had great success in recent seasons . Pittsburgh is 11-3-0 in its last 14 games against the Hurricanes, including five straight victories since Carolina earned a 4-1 home victory on Feb . 28 last season . . . Pittsburgh has earned six consecutive home victories over the Hurricanes, the Penguins’ third-longest current home win streak against one team (13 vs . Atlanta/Winnipeg, seven vs . Tampa Bay) . Carolina’s last victory here in Pittsburgh came on March 20, 2010 (3-2 in overtime on Jamie McBain’s goal at 4:59) . . . The teams played the first of three previous games this season here on Oct. 8, as Jussi Jokinen scored twice in the third period to complete his first hat trick with the Penguins in a 5-2 victory over his former team. Heading into late March, that remained the last hat trick by a Pittsburgh player on home ice this season . . . Oct. 28 in Carolina, Chris Kunitz scored late in the second period to break a tie and Jayson Megna added his first NHL goal and assist as Pittsburgh earned a 3-1 victory over the Hurricanes. . . The most recent game between the teams was Dec . 27 in Carolina, where continued on page 7

James Neal’s goal at 1:03 of overtime gave the Penguins a 4-3 victory. Jokinen had three assists in that game for Pittsburgh. . . Carolina is 1-for-8 on the power play this season against Pittsburgh and just 2-for-24 in its last eight games against the Penguins. Carolina has gone seven straight games here in Pittsburgh without a power-play goal (0-for-23). The last Hurricane to score a power-play goal here was Jokinen, who beat Marc-Andre Fleury in the opening period of a 3-2 Carolina victory on Dec. 7, 2009. . . Pittsburgh is also 10-2-1 in its last 13 home games against Carolina, with all three losses coming by a single goal. . . The Penguins have outshot the Hurricanes in each of the last six games here. . . The Penguins are 62-50-11-5 all-time against the Hartford/Carolina franchise, including a mark of 33-22-6-1 here at home. THE PENGUINS
This is the last game of a 10-game stretch in which Pittsburgh has played eight times at home. The Penguins begin their final road trip of the season Thursday in Winnipeg and will also play in Minnesota on Saturday and Colorado on Sunday before returning home to finish the regular season with home games against Detroit (April 9), Philadelphia (April 12) and Ottawa (April 13). . . Pittsburgh was enduring a late-season slump as it prepared to finish its four-game homestand by hosting Los Angeles on March 27, having gone 6-6-3 over its last 15 games after a 3-2 loss to Phoenix here on March 25. . . One of the challenges facing the Penguins at that point was

getting its penalty killing back to the shape that allowed it to lead the NHL for most of the second half of the season. Pittsburgh was 12-for-31 (77.4 percent) over its last nine games overall and 18-for-26 (69.2 percent) in its last eight home games after the loss to Phoenix. . . Evgeni Malkin was expected to miss two to three weeks with a foot injury announced March 25, and the loss to the Coyotes was Pittsburgh’s first in 17 regular-season home games without Malkin. . . The Penguins were hoping to clinch their eighth consecutive playoff berth in the game against the Kings. The only current streaks longer in the NHL belonged to San Jose (10) and Detroit (22) at that point. . . Sidney Crosby led the NHL in scoring with 95 points before facing the Kings, and he was headed for his fifth 100-point season and first since 2009-10 (109). THE HURRICANES

The Hurricanes played in Ottawa last night and will return home to face Dallas on Thursday. . . Carolina had lost four of its last six games before playing in Florida on March 27, a game which found them nine points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Hurricanes had won two of their last three road games going into that contest. . . Eric Staal entered the Florida game just three assists shy of 400 for his career. He had 55 points in 69 games to lead Carolina in scoring at that point. . . Former Pittsburgh center Jordan Staal had 15 goals and 39 points in 72 games after a 5-4 loss to the New York Islanders on March 25. . . Jeff Skinner had 27 goals at that point, just four shy of his career high of 31 set in his rookie season in 2010-11.

CLOSING FAST: Vancouver G Eddie Lack’s shutout of Nashville on March 19 was his fourth in 34 games this season and brought Lack to within two shutouts of NHL-leader Tuukka Rask of Boston . Rask registered six shutouts in his first 52 games .
40-SOMETHING: The Rangers’ 4-3 overtime win over Phoenix on March 19 was New York’s 40th win of the season . The Rangers have won 40 or more games seven times in the last nine seasons, including seven times in the last eight full seasons . New York has won 40 or more games 17 times in its history and had never won 40 games seven times in a nine-season span previously . The Rangers are one of six teams to reach 40 wins seven times since
2005-06, joining the Penguins, the Sharks, the Red Wings, the Ducks and the Predators .
FLYING FLYER: Philadelphia RW Wayne Simmonds produced eight points (5+3) in a span of five games from March 15-22 . Simmonds’ 54 points (24+30) through the Flyers’ first 71 games easily surpassed his previous career-high total of 49 points, set two seasons ago .
BURNING BRIGHTLY: A run of 15 points in 13 games (3+12) allowed Calgary D Mark Giordano to tie his career-high total of 43 points (12+31) through the Flames’ first 72 games . Giordano’s 12 goals equaled his career-high total in that department .
DUCKS FLYING HIGH: Anaheim’s mark of 46-18-7 constituted the best record through 71 games in franchise history . The Ducks also had the best road record (21-11-3) and had scored the most goals (226) at that juncture of a season in club history .

PENGUINS LIGHT IT UP BLUE TO SHINE A LIGHT ON AUTISM The Pittsburgh Penguins hope to light the lamp red during tonight’s game against Carolina, but they will also have thoughts of blue on their minds as the organization participates in the annual Light It Up Blue campaign to raise awareness for autism . Since 2007, Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, has been promoting Light It Up Blue as part of World Autism Awareness Day . Celebrated annually on April 2, this unique global initiative kicks-off Autism Awareness Month . Prominent buildings and landmarks across North America and the world turn their lights blue to shine a light on autism . According to Autism Speaks, an estimated one out of 54 boys and one in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States every year .

The Pittsburgh Penguins and CONSOL Energy Center are pleased to show their support by displaying Light It Up Blue graphics on the LED pucks at the American Eagle Gate entrance as well lighting the ice blue during tonight’s intermissions . Additionally, members of the Penguins coaching staff will wear Autism Speaks’ signature puzzle piece lapel pin to show their support . The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation continually offer their support to Autism Speaks . In addition to tickets in Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin’s charity suites throughout the years, the local chapter has been the recipient of over $40,000 raised from the 50/50 charity raffle . The money raised helps to better the lives of those affected with autism . In March, the Penguins Foundation announced a new program — Tablets in Education — that will also benefit area youth living with autism by providing them with tablet devices to enhance their educational experience . Visit autismspeaks.org to learn more about the movement and to see how you can take action to raise autism awareness in your community!

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY SHERO
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins. Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to a pre-season trip to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point or audio from the team bench during an Evgeni Malkin hat trick, In The Room gives fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy-nominated, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. New episodes air on or around the 15th of each month. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic,’” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. Now, with In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” continued on page 62

The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Sidney Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Evgeni Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique oneon-one workout session between coach Bylsma and Kris Letang. Season Two showcased the dedication and human side of a hockey player. Joe Vitale said goodbye to his wife and kids before a road trip, and two former NHL captains, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow, said goodbye to their old teams as Ray Shero acquired them prior to the trade deadline. Chatter on the bench between James Neal and Malkin during a game highlighted their unique relationship, and the highs and lows of a long postseason run were revealed. The current season began with a trip to West Point. Lessons in leadership, teamwork and sacrifice were stressed — ideals that the 2013-14 Penguins would build upon. each win to the player who has best exemplified those traits. Tanner Glass was mic’d up during a fight, as was Pascal Dupuis — when he pulled out his own tooth! “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,” said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

JOIN THE RUSH! Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. During the 2013-14 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. TWITTER Q&A
MARCEL GOC @DBRAMMELLJR How has the transition been going from one team to another so quickly? #AskGoc “I think the guys made it pretty easy on me to try to help me out. I think it was good that right away. It was tough playing back to back, but it was good to get to play a game right away and get used to the guys that way.” @VIVALAMIRKO Who was the first Penguin you spoke to after you found out you were traded to Pittsburgh #AskGoc “It was Sid [Crosby]. I met him in San Jose. I came when the guys came off the ice. We met there in the hallway right away.” @EVILERNIE667 What has been the biggest difference so far between Florida and Pittsburgh other than the weather? #AskGoc “I think the big jump in the standings there over night. Florida I think we were second to last and now Pittsburgh is a first place team. Other than that, I don’t know, I didn’t see much yet from downtown Pittsburgh so I’m looking forward to driving around a bit and getting to know the city.” @EQUESTRIAN66 Where is your favorite place to travel in the offseason? #AskGoc “I usually spend most of my summer in Germany, but I like going to Austria, we have family there. We try to visit, it doesn’t work out every summer, but every two or three summers I go there for a bit.” @ISEEJENN What is your favorite comfort food? #AskGoc “It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but spätzle and sosse (Soße). Spätzle is a pasta from where I grew up in Germany over there and some brown gravy with it.” @MRSCCROSBY How many languages can you speak? #AskGoc “German, English a little bit and I guess when I was younger I understood Czech. My grandparents and dad are from Czech, but I’ve lost most of it. I can only count to ten now.” 97

2014 BRICK INVITATIONAL
SUPER NOVICE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
For those not familiar with the Brick tournament, it is the most prestigious hockey event for players at the 10 & Under age level. The Brick is offered for the 2004 age group this coming summer. Select teams from all over the North American continent attend this renowned summer tournament. The Brick offers promising young hockey players and their parents their first opportunity to compete in a very elite international environment. Not only does the tournament provide great hockey, but also a number of unique office activities, including the famous Brick Tournament Beach Party at the Water Park, as well as a skills competition and other events which make the tournament a special, fun-filled hockey experience for the entire family. This past summer was the first year that Team PA was invited to attend the tournament, and the experience proved to be second to none. No detail is overlooked by the tournament staff and the production of games is at the pro level, much like the NHL. From the playing of the national anthems before each game, to announcers making play-by-play calls of the action, this event greatly exceeds any tournament you have experienced. The dates typically are during the first week of July. This is much more that the usual weekend tournament since the Brick is a weeklong event (seven days). Round-robin play starts on Monday and players/families typically arrive two days prior to the opening round game. Teams normally practice the day before the tournament starts, at the West Edmonton Mall. continued on page 102

They also showed a tremendous work ethic and do not mind sharing the puck. They will need to do all these things and more to be successful in Edmonton. It was a great sign that they are showing these traits before we have even had a practice. I am sure they will represent Team Pennsylvania well at the Brick.” As the Brick Tournament quickly approaches we would like to wish all participants and coaches the best of luck as they get ready to face some of the most talented young hockey players in North America.

ANNER GLAS
CRAIG MUNI
PENGUINS PROFILE:
TANNER GLASS BY: MARK MADDEN
It wasn’t too long ago that shot-blocking was a specialty. Some teams had a defenseman that ate rubber. It was old-school and a novelty at the same time. The Penguins had defenseman Craig Muni in 1996-97, the penultimate season of his 12-year NHL career. Muni won three Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers dynasty (1987, 1988, 1990). Muni specialized in killing penalties and blocking shots. He dressed the part: Extra-big shin pads and a Robocop helmet. Not every player blocks shots in today's NHL. But more do than don’t. Entering play on March 24, Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik ranked 22nd among NHL players with 130 blocks. Forward Craig Adams was 17th among forwards with 56 blocks. Winger Tanner Glass was 24th among forwards with 52. GLASS, HOWEVER, HAS THE HIGHLIGHT-REEL BLOCKS:
Glass blocked three shots in one shift Nov. 13 during a 2-1 home loss to Philadelphia. Glass’ hand got broken by a P.K. Subban shot Nov. 23 during a 3-2 loss at Montreal. Glass blocked two more shots on the same shift — both after fracturing his hand. Glass was out for a month. continued on page 111
109
“JUST GET IN FRONT OF IT. IT’S KIND OF INSTINCTIVE WHEN IT’S HAPPENING.” “WHEN IT’S HAPPENING ON THE [PENALTY-KILL], YOU KNOW WHO THE BIG SHOOTERS ARE, AND WHO THEY’RE TRYING TO GET THE PUCK TO. YOU JUST TRY TO GET BIG, AND LET IT HIT YOU.” ~ TANNER GLASS
continued from page 109
Glass blocked two Shea Weber shots on one shift March 4 during a 3-1 victory at Nashville. Weber may be the NHL’s hardest shooter. Weber’s slap shot has been timed at 106 mph. Glass’ advice to shot-blockers: Don’t think too much. “Just get in front of it,” said Glass, 30. “It’s kind of instinctive when it’s happening. “When it’s happening on the [penalty-kill], you know who the big shooters are, and who they’re trying to get the puck to. You just try to get big, and let it hit you.” That doesn’t make it easy. That certainly doesn’t make it painless. “When we have [penalty-kill] meetings, I’m obviously mindful of who the shooters are,” Glass said. “But when you’re out there, you’re just trying to get in the lane. Whether it’s a wrist shot or a slap shot or whatever, you’re just trying to make yourself big.” Glass grimaced when discussing the break inflicted by Subban.

“And two years ago, I broke my foot [blocking a shot], so I’m not as durable as I should be,” Glass said, smiling. “I just got it in the right spot. But you can’t be afraid to block those things.” Glass doesn’t wear any extra equipment or padding: “I probably should. But it might slow me down. That’s probably mental, though.” Absorbing Weber’s cannon produced lingering trauma. “Those were heavy. I can still feel one of ‘em here, on the wrist,” Glass said, gesturing. “I got the other one on my leg — my knee got sore from it and my hip got sore from it. I altered my stride and it bugged me for about two weeks. “That's probably the heaviest one you’ll ever block.” Despite the risk, Glass is going to keep blocking shots. “That’s my job,” said the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Saskatchewan native. “I’m out there to kill penalties. I’m out there to get in the lanes. The minute I start flamingo-ing [lifting a leg] or getting out of the way is the minute I’m out of here.”
Glass doesn’t just receive punishment. He also inflicts it. Glass delivered a team-record 13 hits in one game, a 3-0 loss at Dallas this past Jan. 25. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

GYMNASTICS LEGENDS DESCRIBE THRILL OF UPCOMING NATIONALS
When the 2014 P&G Gymnastics SPONSORED LOCALLY BY Championships come to Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center in August, there will be two special fans cheering on competitors in the four-day event. Bela Karolyi, one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches, and Carly Patterson, 2004 All-Around Olympic Gold medalist, visited Pittsburgh to check out the venue and to talk about the significance of this event which is being held for the first time in Pittsburgh. The 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships, USA Gymnastics’ national championships, showcase the country’s best male and female gymnasts. It also will determine the U.S. champions and the U.S. national team for the junior and senior elite levels. BELA KAROLYI The nationals also traditionally serve as part of the selection process for the U.S. Team for the World Championships. Simone Biles and Sam Mikulak are the reigning women’s and men’s U.S. all-around champions, respectively. The 2014 schedule will be: • Thursday, Aug. 21 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Friday, Aug. 22 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Saturday, Aug. 23 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Sunday, Aug. 24 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors. continued on page 133

“Wow! What a beautiful arena,” Karolyi says of CONSOL Energy Center on his first visit to the venue. “What an excellent place to perform.” Patterson agrees, “CONSOL Energy Center looks like a great place. I’m excited to be here.” Karolyi says, “I’ll be here rooting and encouraging all of the participants to do their best.” The long-time coach and influential figure in gymnastics, Karolyi now has snowy white hair, and his passion for gymnastics and his signature mustache are as vibrant as ever. Making a round of Pittsburgh media to promote the upcoming P&G Gymnastics Championships, Karolyi talked about the significance of the championships, his career and the future, as well as the rich history of gymnastics. “We could have a world changer here in Pittsburgh with the world medalists who will be here,” Karolyi says. The standards of gymnastics are higher than ever before, according to Karolyi who says that people will not be able to imagine the spectacular athletic CARLY PATTERSON performances that they will see at the 2014 championships. “It will be a great moment in Pittsburgh gymnastics,” he says, adding, “Who knows who will make history? There could be another Nadia [Comaneci] or Gabby [Douglas].” “It will be inspiring,” he says. “The P&G Gymnastics Championships are a unique opportunity to see the best in the world,” Karolyi says. Patterson, who has experienced some great moments in gymnastics history herself, shares this view. “It’s an exciting time for the sport,” she says, pointing out that the 2014 championship will draw the likes of 2012 Olympic Team Gold Medalists Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney, and Biles. “It is the biggest competition of the year,” says Carly pointing out that the best gymnasts in the nation, juniors and seniors will come to Pittsburgh to compete for the country’s highest honors in the sport. For local gymnasts and fans of the sport, Patterson says, “You’re lucky when it comes to your city. We will have the best in the United States, boys and girls, competing. It’s the chance to enjoy your sport firsthand and to see world class athletes in your backyard.” continued on page 134

She recalls watching championship performances when she was a young gymnast herself and says that it was inspiring and motivational to her to see high caliber gymnasts vying for top honors. Besides designating gymnastics new national champions and recognizing the individuals’ years of work to hone their performances, Karolyi says, it is “the moment” that is the dream of many young athletes. “Kids are working 8-10 years to get to the national championships.” Karolyi says that for young gymnasts who dream of being champions, the JAKE DALTON impact of witnessing a live competition for national honors can impress and motivate them. “It is the life-time chance to see athletes perform at this level,” he says. “Thousands of kids will come and go home dreaming,” Karolyi says. “Let’s embrace this competition and give kids the opportunity to get inspired. People will be glad that they did,” he says. What attracts Karolyi to the sport of gymnastics? “It’s unique and beautiful,” he says. Floor exercise is his favorite part of gymnastic competition. He calls it a showcase of athletic ability and strength combined with music, dance and expression. “It’s a beautiful combination” he says. When she was competing, Patterson says, “Yes, beam was always my favorite event and to have a dismount named after me that is still one of the hardest dismounts you can do makes me really proud of that. My favorite part of competition now is just watching all the young talent getting better and better and doing so well. It is so nice to sit back and relax and enjoy my sport in a different light, especially knowing that I achieved my ultimate goal in gymnastics.” Discussing what it takes to make a champion, Karolyi says, “The element of performance is needed in addition to the mental element, the drive, soul and feelings.” Mental strength, high difficulty performance and attitude are all necessary to success, he says. Patterson says that excellence in gymnastics teaches and exacts “dedication, commitment and lots of hard work.” Its lessons have relevance for her now as she pursues a college degree from Texas Women’s University and a career in public speaking. On her rise to the top of the world of women’s gymnastics, Patterson laughs and says, “Looking at early videos, no one would have expected it.” continued on page 137

Known as one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches and a leader in the sport, Karolyi had a somewhat ironic career as a gymnast. He has produced 28 Olympians, nine Olympic champions, 15 world champions, 12 European champions and six U.S. national champions and says that he struggled in the sport as an athlete in college. “I thought who in the world created this crazy sport.” It was a required study in his physical education training. He says that he was almost “kicked out” of the university over the gymnastics test. His wife Marta, herself a world renowned gymnastics coach, played a crucial role in his gymnastics career. “I met a young lady. She was a great gymnast. We shared a dream together,” he says. Of her gymnastics career, Patterson says, “It was just one of those things that was meant to be.” She confirms that when she attended her cousin’s gymnastics-themed birthday party, “I fell in love with it. My cousin was not a gymnast. She just had her party there.” Laughing, Patterson adds, “She says that I owe her.” Entering the sport at age six, Patterson became the top gymnast in the world in a decade. As a Level 10 gymnast in 2000, she watched Elite gymnasts at a competition and says, “I knew then that I wanted to be like those girls. I knew that I had four SHAWN JOHNSON years to work my butt off to be ready.” “In 2000 a lot happened. I went Elite from Level 10,” Patterson says. She also remembers dealing with her family’s move to another city and having to change gym’s which she says turned out to be a blessing. “I had to keep an eye on the end goal, stay healthy and keep working,” she says. In the 2003 World Championships, she won 2nd in the All-Around competition, and a year later, she became the U.S. National Co-Champion, and went on to be the first American woman to take the Olympic Gold for the All-Around in 20 years. continued on page 138

Patterson says that gymnasts have a “special connection” whether they are Olympians or beginners in their first year. To all of the gymnasts who share the dream of being the best, Patterson says, “Gymnastics is such a great sport. Even if you don’t go to the Olympics or get a scholarship, it’s a great foundation, develops motor skills and teaches a lot about your body.” She adds, “Be proud just to be a gymnast. You are doing something that not everyone can do.” Asked about the future of the sport of gymnastics, Karolyi says, “There have been crucial moments in the history of gymnastics when I’ve thought ‘This is the most intense and highest performance of human capacity’.” He cites as examples performances by Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. Comaneci is the only gymnast to ever score perfect 10 in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. In 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles, the energetic and physical performance of Mary Lou Retton earned her the all-around gymnastics championship. “The sport is ever developing in difficulty, the components, dance and music. I don’t believe there is a limit now,” Karolyi says. JOHN OROZCO On this topic, Patterson says, “I have already seen the sport of gymnastics rise so much after the 2004 Olympics and it has been great to watch. I only see good things for the future and for our country to keep dominating like we have been!” Citing Retton’s “lovely personality” and “fiery performance,” Karolyi says, “Mary Lou turned the page on gymnastics toward making it the nation’s number one sport.” He points out that women’s gymnastics is the most watched sport in the country. Karolyi calls Retton, “Mary Lou, my sunshine of my coaching career.” He says that unlike some youngsters who were quiet and perhaps intimidated by his coaching style, Retton was bubbly and enthusiastic and enjoyed every second of training and competing. Looking ahead to the next Olympic Games in 2016, Karolyi says, “We are going to try to make it. We will probably retire after 2016,” he says noting that he and his wife have been involved in the sport for some 50 years. “We deserve to retire,” he says, and then after a moment’s pause he adds, “We will never stop contributing as much as we can.”

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in Cranberry in the summer of 2015, will feature two sheets of ice and serve as the Penguins’ official practice rink — but, as Penguins CEO David Morehouse said, “it will be much more than a hockey rink.” The complex will be the first medical facility in the country to focus specifically on hockey-relating training, rehab and injury prevention. “It will be a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility right here in Cranberry,” Morehouse said. UPMC will build the 180,000 square foot facility at an estimated cost of $70 million. The complex will offer expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy, imaging and sports-performance training. “The facility that we are planning here will comprise almost 50,000 square feet of clinical space for world-class orthopaedic and therapy programs,” said Liz Condordia, UPMC executive vice president. continued on page 143

Romoff praised Lemieux, the Hockey Hall of Famer, for his special relationship with UPMC. “We have the Austin’s Playrooms in seven of our hospitals, which Mario and his foundation have provided … the Lemieux sibling complex at Children’s Hospital, and, most recently, our fabulous, completely brand-new Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers,” Romoff said.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. The Elite programs, both boys and girls, are finding tremendous success on the ice as the U18 boys and U14 girls were Tier 1 Elite League Champions this past year. The U14 girls were also bronze medalists at the USA Hockey National Championships. In the National Championships all three eligible boys teams (Midget Major, U14, U16) reached quarterfinals. “Our goal is to make Pittsburgh Penguins Elite the best AAA hockey program in the country,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “But it isn’t just about winning games and championships. is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. If you are interested in donating to the Heads Up Pittsburgh program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 152 136

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 156 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140 156

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. If you are interested in donating to the Project Power Play program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 159 143

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…
In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.
Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.
The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.
And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. 178 continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION
The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164 181

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS
The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS
The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164 180
teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES
Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168 184

PLAYOFFS
Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straightahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!
THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING
Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-totape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position continued on page 184 200

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”
GET TO THE NET
Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.
WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN
We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com. 208 192

COLIN SOUTH
RMU: ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN BY: MIKE PRISUTA
Colin South made the relatively short trip from his home in Sewickley to Robert Morris fully intending to someday make the long journey to the NCAA Tournament. “Absolutely, I thought it was possible,’ South insisted. He had to wait until his senior season. But for South, captaining the team that delivered RMU to where it had never been previously was well worth the wait. “It’s really hard to put into words,” South said after the Colonials had defeated Canisius, 7-4, on March 22 in Rochester, N.Y., in the Atlantic Hockey Association Championship Game. “Everyone just screaming and hugging each other, one of the happiest moments of my life, definitely the most fun I’ve had playing hockey. “Why play if you don’t want to win a championship, right? It’s an unbelievable experience.” RMU, in its 10th season at the NCAA Division I level, had been in conference championship games and played for automatic bids to the 16-team NCAA Tournament twice previously. In 2007 the Colonials met Alabama-Huntsville for the College Hockey America title but lost, 5-4, in overtime. RMU had led 4-0 but eventually lost on a short-handed goal. And in 2009 it came down to the Colonials and Bemidji State for the CHA championship. Bemidji State won, 3-2, in OT. This time there would be no stopping Robert Morris. continued on page 212
211
continued from page 211
The team that started the season 2-12-2 unleashed a 17-5-3 finishing kick and headed to the NCAA’s West Regional at 19-17-5, a record that ensured the fourth consecutive nonlosing season for the program (RMU had winning seasons in TERRY SHAFER 2010-11, 2012-13 and this season and was .500 in 2011-12). Along the way the Colonials lost freshman starting goaltender Terry Shafer to a knee injury in Game Three of a first-round, best-of-three series against Army. Freshman backup Dalton Izyk took over from there and wound up being named to the AHA All-Tournament Team. “It’d be a lie to say when we were 2-12-2 some of us didn’t have our doubts,” sophomore winger Matt Cope said. “But then we had a good team meeting, we did some team-building stuff and we pulled together. “And that’s kind of been the theme of things, whatever adversity we’ve faced we’ve been able to overcome.” The “team-building stuff” Cope referenced included head coach Derek Schooley instructing his players to commit to paper everything that had disappointed them about the first half of the season in the wake of consecutive one-goal losses in the Three Rivers Classic, Dec. 27-28 at CONSOL Energy Center. The papers were then placed in a pile and burned. And in the end it was the Colonials who were on fire heading into the NCAA Tournament. The bid-clinching win over Canisius was highlighted by a hat trick from junior winger Cody Wydo, who extended his program record for goals in a season to 30 and his program record for points in a season to 52. continued on page 215

The Colonials’ reward for qualifying was a No. 16 seed and a date with No. 1 seed-Minnesota last Saturday in St. Paul. Minn. No one in the RMU contingent was complaining. “I think it’s exciting,” junior center Scott Jacklin said. “Anything’s possible if you get the right players together believing in the same thing. I think that’s what happened with our group.” In addition to South, senior defenseman Andrew Blazek (Upper St. Clair), sophomore forward Zac Lynch (Shaler) and junior center David Rigatti (Peters Township) represented western Pennsylvania along with their Colonials teammates in St. Paul. The flight touched down last Thursday morning. The program had symbolically arrived the previous Saturday night when its NCAA ticket had been punched. “We’ve made such great strides in the past few years, it’s been incredible,” Lynch said. “Schooley’s a great coach; he brought this program from the ground up. “There’s trust in the lines from top to bottom, everyone plays for each other. No one gets down. We keep fighting no matter what. It really is a special group.” Added South: “One of the biggest reasons I came here was it was an up-and-coming program. I liked the coaching staff. They had had success. They had come close in the CHA Tournament a couple of times. “I didn’t see any reason why it couldn’t happen.”

CAMPS & CLINICS HIGH PERFORMANCE CAMP WITH DON GRANATO The High Performance Camp with Don Granato, Head Coach of the USA Hockey U17 National Team and brother of Pittsburgh Penguins Assistant Coach Tony Granato, will be held June 13-15 at Bladerunners Warrendale. This camp is geared toward elite level hockey players. Don Granato has created a development plan specifically for this camp. This program will mimic how junior, college and professional hockey players improve their game in the off season through position specific skill development.
SCORING CAMP As the saying goes, “You can’t win, if you can’t score.” This camp will focus on the finer points of putting the puck in the net. From working on quick release to shot fakes, the players will learn everything they need to light the lamp. Players will get a chance to shoot a ton of pucks and will be put in different scoring scenarios.
DEFENSEMAN CAMP It is widely recognized that defensemen take more time to develop than forwards. The reason for this is there are more responsibilities bestowed on them. The goal of this camp is to identify these responsibilities and show the skaters how to efficiently accomplish them. The skaters will work on D specific drills that will help them make decisions quicker, become more aggressive, and develop the defensemen’s mentality.
INSTRUCTIONAL 3-ON-3 Hockey is a game of creating opportunities in small spaces. Big Ice 3-on-3 leagues do not allow players to simulate these situations. This makes it easy for them to develop bad habits. In Penguins Hockey Development’s Cross Ice 3-on-3, the players will play on a third of the ice. This ensures that the puck will always be around them, while forcing them to make quick decisions. Goalies will get plenty of realistic shots, not just breakaway after breakaway.
TUNE-UP FOR TRYOUTS AND TUNE-UP FOR GOALIES This camp provides skill development and power-skating instruction from Cliff Loya and Max Ivanov. All goalies will received instruction from Mike Chiasson and Matt Wynn.

BORTUZZO MAKING THE MOST OF HIS OPPORTUNITY BY: ADDISON SMITH
Penguins defenseman Robert Bortuzzo is the kind of guy that players want in their locker room. “[Bortuzzo] is a great guy, a great teammate,” Engelland said. “Every team would want him in their room. So for us to have a guy like that is nice to have for the team.” Then add in his play recently on the ice, and the niceties keep on flowing. Bortuzzo recently had a three-game assist streak from March 16 to March 20 and has stepped up for the defensive corps as they are still without Paul Martin and Kris Letang. His assist on Brandon Sutter’s shorthanded goal in the Penguins’ 5-1 win over Dallas last Tuesday was his first shorthanded point of his career. “[Bortuzzo] is playing great. He’s going against top guys like [Tampa Bay’s Steven] Stamkos and stuff like that,” Engelland said. “I think that helps him with those assists, but he’s making smart, quick plays and it’s really shown how far he’s come along.” Assistant coach for the Penguins Todd Reirden said Bortuzzo has worked his way up to big ice time opportunities. Bortuzzo was recently matched against opposing team’s top lines and top players, which Reirden attributed to Bortuzzo’s ability to build off of chances for himself. continued on page 236

“We’re trying to find different combinations for pairings that we’re looking to use,” said Reirden, who works closely with the team’s defensemen. “It’s found him an opportunity like playing against Stamkos the other night. He spent quite a bit of time playing against [St. Louis’s David] Backes and his line. I think that these opportunities when guys are out gives players a chance to find themselves as NHL players and allow them to start to become more confident in their own abilities. I think Robert has done a great job of that this year, building on opportunities and taking advantage of them.” Bortuzzo said that his experience in his two years in Pittsburgh has been crazy and tolling with the quick turnaround between practices and games. “My first two years in the league have kind of been a little hectic,” Bortuzzo said. “I had the shortened season last year and this has been a big year. It’s been a lot of games in a short amount of stretch that I’m not completely used to. But the trainers and coaches with practices and time off do a good job of managing our bodies. Overall I think that working hard throughout the summer that just carries you continued on page 239

here. Practices have been good. Having a good work ethic, I think that goes a long way.” Defenseman Matt Niskanen explained Bortuzzo’s role on the ice for the Penguins. “Bortuzzo primarily is a physical guy,” Niskanen said. “A penalty killer, a good defender, he’s got a long reach. He’s pretty tall, pretty stout, he’s got good strength. He’s got that long stick and he plays hard and he defends the game hard. He’s in your face and he’s pretty good at killing penalties. He’ll drop the gloves if he has to, if the team needs that. He brings a lot to the table, he’s a really competitive guy. He tries to do whatever he can to help the team win.” What is Bortuzzo’s ultimate goal for the season? To see the ice for a playoff game in the NHL, which given his play so far and the Penguins’ playoff situation seems more and more likely each day. “Coming into the year, I kind of set some goals for myself,” Bortuzzo said. “I always want to be solid defensively and try not to be on the ice for a goal against, that’s kind of my ultimate goal. This year the biggest goal for me is to get NHL playoff games in. I put myself in a pretty good position here throughout the year. I know there’s been some ups and downs and questions marks at the beginning of the year with what the team is going to look like. That was my goal to get into the NHL playoff games and hopefully we’ll have that opportunity here.” 239
