GAME NOTES BY: BOB GROVE
THE SERIES
The Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers meet this afternoon for the final time this regular season. . . Philadelphia has won each of the last three games between the teams, including a sweep of their home-and-home set last month. That included a 4-0 home shutout of the Penguins on March 15 behind 25 saves from goaltender Steve Mason and a 4-3 victory here at CONSOL Energy Center the next day. . . The Flyers also earned a 2-1 victory here on Nov. 13 to answer the Penguins’ 4-1 road win Oct. 17 at Wells Fargo Center. . . This is the first time Pittsburgh has lost three straight to the Flyers since Mar. 29-Dec. 29, 2011, and the first time the Penguins have lost three straight to the Flyers in the same season since a fourgame losing streak Nov. 7-Jan. 24 during the 2007-08 season. . . Pittsburgh is 5-4-0 in its last nine games against Philadelphia. . . Pittsburgh is 3-10-0 in 13 all-time games against the Flyers at CONSOL Energy Center (including playoffs), and 2-8-0 in 10 regular season games here. . . The Penguins’ last home win over Philadelphia came March 24, 2013, a 2-1 overtime triumph on Tyler Kennedy’s goal at 2:13. . . Flyers have a PPG in six straight continued on page 7

vs. Pittsburgh (7-for-21, 33.3 percent) and 13 of their last 14 (14-for-59, 23.7 percent). . . Penguins have produced a PPG against the Flyers in seven of the last 10 meetings (9-for-42, 21.4 percent). . . The Flyers have a PPG in all nine 10 regular-season games they've played at CONSOL Energy Center (11-for-38, 28.9 percent), their longest road streak ever against Pittsburgh, and 14 of the last 15 games in Pittsburgh (17-for-61, 27.8 percent). . . The Penguins are 93-140-30-5 all-time against Philadelphia, including a 60-52-22-0 mark at home. This is the second game of a seasonending three-game homestand for the Penguins, their longest ever at the conclusion of a season. Pittsburgh hosted Detroit to open the homestand Wednesday night and will host Ottawa tomorrow night to close out the 2013-14 regular season. . . The Penguins reached 50 victories for just the third time in team history last weekend with a 3-2 shootout victory in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche. The 2011-12 (51) and 1992-93 (56) teams also had 50 or more victories. . . The win over Colorado was also Pittsburgh’s 23rd on the road this season, a total surpassed only by the 2010-11 and 1992-93 teams, both of which won 24. . . Dan Bylsma became the fastest NHL coach to reach 250 victories when the Penguins won in Winnipeg on April 3, doing so in 396 games — 20 games faster than current Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau. . . The Penguins surpassed the 500 man-games lost due to injury plateau in the victory over the Avalanche. That game also marked the team’s eighth straight victory when playing continued on page 8

without both Sidney Crosby (upper body) and Evgeni Malkin (foot) . . . Brandon Sutter had his sixth career two-goal game in the win over Colorado. . . The Penguins will be in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the eighth consecutive season when they begin next week. The only teams with longer streaks heading into the final week of the season were Detroit (22) and San Jose (10). . . Crosby, who has never played a full NHL season, had a 17-point lead on Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf in the scoring race as the final week began. THE FLYERS

Today’s game ends a three-game road trip for the Flyers, who played in Florida on Tuesday and in Tampa Bay on Thursday. They will return home to host Carolina tomorrow. . . Philadelphia snapped a four-game losing streak (0-2-2) last Sunday with a 5-2 home win over Buffalo. The Flyers had scored only five goals during that streak. . . Zac Rinaldo received a match penalty in that game for his hit on the Sabres’ Chad Ruhwedel, and a hearing with the NHL was scheduled for April 7. It is possible Rinaldo will not be available for this game. . . The Flyers were two points ahead of Columbus in the race for third place in the Metropolitan Division when this week began, as well as just two points behind the New York Rangers for second place. . . Claude Giroux was leading Philadelphia in scoring as the week began with 25 goals and 79 points, followed by Wayne Simmonds (26+31) and Jake Voracek (21+36).

WE’RE HERE FOR THE HOCKEY.
LET’S GO PENS
IS PROUD TO BE A PITTSBURGH-BASED BRAND.
AROUND THE NHL BY: MIKE PRISUTA
30 X 3: G Corey Crawford was credited with 30 of Chicago’s first 44 wins in the 2013-14 campaign, which tied Crawford for third in Blackhawks history in 30-win seasons (three) . Crawford trails only Hall-ofFamers Tony Esposito (eight) and Glenn Hall (four) in that category . SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Blues displayed plenty of balance on offense through their first 77 games . Five St . Louis players had surpassed 20 goals in that span, LW Alexander Steen (33), C David Backes (27), LW Jaden Schwartz (23), RW T .J . Oshie (21) and RW Vladimir Tarasenko (21) . And five Blues players had amassed at least 50 points to that point; Oshie (60), Steen (60), Backes (56), Schwartz (54) and D Alex Pietrangelo (50) .
FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Flyers scored 19 first-period goals in their first 17 games after the Olympic break for an average of 1 .12 per game . Philadelphia had managed just 38 goals in first periods in 59 games prior to the Olympics for an average of 0 .65 per game .
BUFFALO SHUFFLE: The Sabres’ 21-47-9 record after 77 games included Buffalo having used five goaltenders on the season, Jhonas Enroth, Matt Hackett, Nathan Lieuwen, Ryan Miller and Michal Neuvirth . That hadn’t happened in Buffalo since 1995-96, when the Sabres turned to Martin Biron, John Blue, Dominik Hasek, Steve Shields and Andrei Trefilov in the crease .
THE FUTURE IS NOW: Edmonton’s line of LW Taylor Hall, C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and RW Jordan Eberle accounted for 16 points in a three-game span from April 1-4 (at San Jose, at Anaheim and at Phoenix) . Hall (1+5 in the three games) is 22-years old, Nugent-Hopkins (2+2) turned 21 today and Eberle (2+4) is 24 . Hall led Edmonton in scoring (26+48) through 78 games while Eberle was second (26+36) and Nugent-Hopkins (18+35) checked in at fourth among Oilers .

PENGUINS FANS DONATE
THOUSANDS OF DIAPERS TO HELP BABIES The Pittsburgh Penguins were proud to partner with Giant Eagle to host a Diaper Drive during Giant Eagle’s Kid-A-Palooza event at the David L . Lawrence Convention Center on Saturday, March 29 and before the Penguins-Blackhawks game on Sunday, March 30 . All donations benefitted the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank . Penguins fans showed their support of the cause with an outpouring of donations as more than 17,155 diapers and $2,250 were accepted by the Pittsburgh Penguins Wives Association and Penguins Booster Club members at CONSOL Energy Center and Giant Eagle representatives at Kid-A-Palooza . Of that number, the Pittsburgh Penguins Wives Association donated more than 5,450 diapers with a huge assist from Giant Eagle from a generous contribution . Fans were invited to help bridge the diaper gap — a lack of a sufficient supply of disposable diapers to ensure babies remain clean, dry and healthy — by providing diapers for babies of families who are most in need . struggle to afford diapers for their children and not all social assistance programs for low-income families cover the cost of diapers . Babies need between 6–10 diapers each day and an adequate supply of diapers can cost more than $100 each month per baby for families that are already struggling . Without a clean diaper available, some babies can spend a day or longer in one diaper, leading to potential health and abuse risks . The Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank could not have been more pleased with the response from Penguins fans for the Diaper Drive sponsored by Giant Eagle . “We would like to thank the Penguins, their wives and the Penguins Foundation for everything they’ve done; for helping us to bring awareness to this region about the crisis,” said Cathy Battle, Director of the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank . “Our vision is to keep as many baby bottoms dry as possible .” Thanks to Penguins fans, our valued partner Giant Eagle, the Penguins Wives Association and Penguins Booster Club, the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank will be able to help many more babies in our community than before .

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY SHERO
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins. Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair. 38

He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. Bylsma was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, inspiring an 18-3-4 run in the final 25 games to climb from 10th to fourth place and home-ice advantage in the opening round. Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as assistant coach with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006. Two seasons later he was promoted to WBS head coach in 2008-09. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-04. He was a member of Anaheim’s 2003 Western Conference championship team. Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to a pre-season trip to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point or audio from the team bench during an Evgeni Malkin hat trick, In The Room gives fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy-nominated, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. New episodes air on or around the 15th of each month. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic,’” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. Now, with In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” continued on page 62

The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Sidney Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Evgeni Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique oneon-one workout session between coach Bylsma and Kris Letang. Season Two showcased the dedication and human side of a hockey player. Joe Vitale said goodbye to his wife and kids before a road trip, and two former NHL captains, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow, said goodbye to their old teams as Ray Shero acquired them prior to the trade deadline. Chatter on the bench between James Neal and Malkin during a game highlighted their unique relationship, and the highs and lows of a long postseason run were revealed. The current season began with a trip to West Point. Lessons in leadership, teamwork and sacrifice were stressed — ideals that the 2013-14 Penguins would build upon. each win to the player who has best exemplified those traits. Tanner Glass was mic’d up during a fight, as was Pascal Dupuis — when he pulled out his own tooth! “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,” said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

JOIN THE RUSH! Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. During the 2013-14 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. TWITTER Q&A
DAN BYLSMA @JESSSTAWINSKI What is your favorite memory as a player vs. your favorite memory as a coach? #AskCoach “Winning in ’03 with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks through three rounds, going to a Stanley Cup Final, playing in a Game Seven, even though it’s a loss in Game Seven it’s my most memorable time as a player. The one as a coach is much better because it’s a run with the Penguins in four series, a Game Seven in a Stanley Cup Final and a victory winning the Stanley Cup. The one as coach is a lot better than the one as a player.” @REIBOT What is your all-time favorite piece of poetry or inspirational quote? (P.S. I love your work Dan!) #AskCoach “I’m not so sure I have just one. My favorite quotable person is John Wooden. We have a lot of them in my office, I use them quite a bit. Right now about championships and what championship teams do and playing defense. That’s the one that we have up right now in the classroom.” @SPORTSFANINVAN When you started out, what was the one thing about being an NHL coach that surprised you the most? #AskCoach “It’s the same game, but it’s a completely different job. It’s not even close to the same, if you think you’re going to stop playing and changing into a track suit and pushing pucks around, it’s a completely different job. That was really evident right away.” @DANNYR11 What would you do as a career if you weren’t coaching hockey? #AskCoach “I got my accounting degree and I was all set, interviewed with big six accounting firms at the time and I would have gone on to be an accountant for a handful of years. Maybe I’d go back for a master’s in business. But right now, I’ve been an author, I’ve done a couple different things, the canvas would be wide open. I don’t know exactly where I would go or exactly what I would do, but it wouldn’t be limited to accounting. I know that.” 97

2014 BRICK INVITATIONAL
SUPER NOVICE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
For those not familiar with the Brick tournament, it is the most prestigious hockey event for players at the 10 & Under age level. The Brick is offered for the 2004 age group this coming summer. Select teams from all over the North American continent attend this renowned summer tournament. The Brick offers promising young hockey players and their parents their first opportunity to compete in a very elite international environment. Not only does the tournament provide great hockey, but also a number of unique office activities, including the famous Brick Tournament Beach Party at the Water Park, as well as a skills competition and other events which make the tournament a special, fun-filled hockey experience for the entire family. This past summer was the first year that Team PA was invited to attend the tournament, and the experience proved to be second to none. No detail is overlooked by the tournament staff and the production of games is at the pro level, much like the NHL. From the playing of the national anthems before each game, to announcers making play-by-play calls of the action, this event greatly exceeds any tournament you have experienced. The dates typically are during the first week of July. This is much more that the usual weekend tournament since the Brick is a weeklong event (seven days). Round-robin play starts on Monday and players/families typically arrive two days prior to the opening round game. Teams normally practice the day before the tournament starts, at the West Edmonton Mall. continued on page 102

They also showed a tremendous work ethic and do not mind sharing the puck. They will need to do all these things and more to be successful in Edmonton. It was a great sign that they are showing these traits before we have even had a practice. I am sure they will represent Team Pennsylvania well at the Brick.” As the Brick Tournament quickly approaches we would like to wish all participants and coaches the best of luck as they get ready to face some of the most talented young hockey players in North America.

ROKKS ORPI
PENGUINS PROFILE:
BROOKS ORPIK BY: MARK MADDEN
Brooks Orpik has been a difference-maker since becoming a full-time Penguin for the 2003-04 season. Orpik knows when it’s time to make a difference, too. His play picked up as the 2013-14 season cascaded down the home stretch toward the playoffs. Orpik’s big hit — impeccably clean by any standard — knocked Chicago captain Jonathan Toews out of the game and helped the Penguins defeat the defending Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks 4-1 at CONSOL Energy Center on March 30. But Orpik can’t play 60 minutes. As the post-season beckoned, the veteran defenseman was anticipating the return of Paul Martin and Kris Letang to the Penguins’ blue line corps. Martin (hand) had been out since the Olympics break. Letang (stroke) hadn’t played since January 27. Martin and Letang have both partnered Orpik, with Martin skating alongside Orpik more recently. “Paul and I definitely have familiarity with each other from the past,” said Orpik, 33. “Anytime you come back from injury, you try to get up to speed and you try to get the rust off. It takes you a few games. It depends on what kind of injury it is. continued on page 111
109
continued from page 109
“It’s tough to jump right back into the regular season after missing all those games. To try to jump right back into the playoffs would be tougher. I think Paul’s excited to get some regular-season games in before the playoffs.” Martin was scheduled to return to the Penguins’ lineup for their game at Winnipeg on April 3. “You can practice as hard as you can, do battle drills and try to simulate game situations,” Orpik continued. “But the actual speed of the game and the physicality of the game are impossible to duplicate in practice. “That’s where guys get caught off-guard, especially when you’re younger. Practice is hard, but it’s a different kind of hard.” Orpik missed three weeks in December after suffering a concussion, an injury with a very uncertain recovery time. That experience gave Orpik insight into Letang’s situation. “I don’t want to compare anything to what Tanger’s going through,” Orpik said. “You never want to tip-toe back into games, or be timid at all. But I think that’s natural. You just try to get through that first game and see how everything goes. “With Tanger’s injury — you look at a situation like that, or the situation with Rich Peverley — no matter how good you feel, that’s probably always on your mind. Hopefully Tanger gets to the point where he can minimize a lot of that, and just go out there and worry about playing, and timing, and situational play.” continued on page 113

Dallas forward Peverley needed surgery to correct an irregular heartbeat after collapsing on the bench during a game March 10. When the Penguins’ defensive corps is 100 percent, it’s an impressive group. Orpik is a big part of that. After 68 games, he had two goals and 11 assists. He played his 700th NHL game at Winnipeg. Orpik has long been the conscience of the Penguins’ locker room. When the team slumped after the Olympics break, Orpik spoke candidly to his teammates. Said defenseman Robert Bortuzzo, “He's a consummate pro. He's a calming influence in our room. He just says the right things when things need to be said. Things were going tough for us there, and he obviously figured that we needed to address some things. “And then he has just backed it up with his play.” Added goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, “He's been something solid for us.” Fleury said. “He's been around for a long time. He knows the game well. It's good to have somebody like him. “The thing I love about watching him play is all those hits.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

GYMNASTICS LEGENDS DESCRIBE THRILL OF UPCOMING NATIONALS
When the 2014 P&G Gymnastics SPONSORED LOCALLY BY Championships come to Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center in August, there will be two special fans cheering on competitors in the four-day event. Bela Karolyi, one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches, and Carly Patterson, 2004 All-Around Olympic Gold medalist, visited Pittsburgh to check out the venue and to talk about the significance of this event which is being held for the first time in Pittsburgh. The 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships, USA Gymnastics’ national championships, showcase the country’s best male and female gymnasts. It also will determine the U.S. champions and the U.S. national team for the junior and senior elite levels. BELA KAROLYI The nationals also traditionally serve as part of the selection process for the U.S. Team for the World Championships. Simone Biles and Sam Mikulak are the reigning women’s and men’s U.S. all-around champions, respectively. The 2014 schedule will be: • Thursday, Aug. 21 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Friday, Aug. 22 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Saturday, Aug. 23 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Sunday, Aug. 24 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors. continued on page 133

“Wow! What a beautiful arena,” Karolyi says of CONSOL Energy Center on his first visit to the venue. “What an excellent place to perform.” Patterson agrees, “CONSOL Energy Center looks like a great place. I’m excited to be here.” Karolyi says, “I’ll be here rooting and encouraging all of the participants to do their best.” The long-time coach and influential figure in gymnastics, Karolyi now has snowy white hair, and his passion for gymnastics and his signature mustache are as vibrant as ever. Making a round of Pittsburgh media to promote the upcoming P&G Gymnastics Championships, Karolyi talked about the significance of the championships, his career and the future, as well as the rich history of gymnastics. “We could have a world changer here in Pittsburgh with the world medalists who will be here,” Karolyi says. The standards of gymnastics are higher than ever before, according to Karolyi who says that people will not be able to imagine the spectacular athletic CARLY PATTERSON performances that they will see at the 2014 championships. “It will be a great moment in Pittsburgh gymnastics,” he says, adding, “Who knows who will make history? There could be another Nadia [Comaneci] or Gabby [Douglas].” “It will be inspiring,” he says. “The P&G Gymnastics Championships are a unique opportunity to see the best in the world,” Karolyi says. Patterson, who has experienced some great moments in gymnastics history herself, shares this view. “It’s an exciting time for the sport,” she says, pointing out that the 2014 championship will draw the likes of 2012 Olympic Team Gold Medalists Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney, and Biles. “It is the biggest competition of the year,” says Carly pointing out that the best gymnasts in the nation, juniors and seniors will come to Pittsburgh to compete for the country’s highest honors in the sport. For local gymnasts and fans of the sport, Patterson says, “You’re lucky when it comes to your city. We will have the best in the United States, boys and girls, competing. It’s the chance to enjoy your sport firsthand and to see world class athletes in your backyard.” continued on page 134

She recalls watching championship performances when she was a young gymnast herself and says that it was inspiring and motivational to her to see high caliber gymnasts vying for top honors. Besides designating gymnastics new national champions and recognizing the individuals’ years of work to hone their performances, Karolyi says, it is “the moment” that is the dream of many young athletes. “Kids are working 8-10 years to get to the national championships.” Karolyi says that for young gymnasts who dream of being champions, the JAKE DALTON impact of witnessing a live competition for national honors can impress and motivate them. “It is the life-time chance to see athletes perform at this level,” he says. “Thousands of kids will come and go home dreaming,” Karolyi says. “Let’s embrace this competition and give kids the opportunity to get inspired. People will be glad that they did,” he says. What attracts Karolyi to the sport of gymnastics? “It’s unique and beautiful,” he says. Floor exercise is his favorite part of gymnastic competition. He calls it a showcase of athletic ability and strength combined with music, dance and expression. “It’s a beautiful combination” he says. When she was competing, Patterson says, “Yes, beam was always my favorite event and to have a dismount named after me that is still one of the hardest dismounts you can do makes me really proud of that. My favorite part of competition now is just watching all the young talent getting better and better and doing so well. It is so nice to sit back and relax and enjoy my sport in a different light, especially knowing that I achieved my ultimate goal in gymnastics.” Discussing what it takes to make a champion, Karolyi says, “The element of performance is needed in addition to the mental element, the drive, soul and feelings.” Mental strength, high difficulty performance and attitude are all necessary to success, he says. Patterson says that excellence in gymnastics teaches and exacts “dedication, commitment and lots of hard work.” Its lessons have relevance for her now as she pursues a college degree from Texas Women’s University and a career in public speaking. On her rise to the top of the world of women’s gymnastics, Patterson laughs and says, “Looking at early videos, no one would have expected it.” continued on page 137

Known as one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches and a leader in the sport, Karolyi had a somewhat ironic career as a gymnast. He has produced 28 Olympians, nine Olympic champions, 15 world champions, 12 European champions and six U.S. national champions and says that he struggled in the sport as an athlete in college. “I thought who in the world created this crazy sport.” It was a required study in his physical education training. He says that he was almost “kicked out” of the university over the gymnastics test. His wife Marta, herself a world renowned gymnastics coach, played a crucial role in his gymnastics career. “I met a young lady. She was a great gymnast. We shared a dream together,” he says. Of her gymnastics career, Patterson says, “It was just one of those things that was meant to be.” She confirms that when she attended her cousin’s gymnastics-themed birthday party, “I fell in love with it. My cousin was not a gymnast. She just had her party there.” Laughing, Patterson adds, “She says that I owe her.” Entering the sport at age six, Patterson became the top gymnast in the world in a decade. As a Level 10 gymnast in 2000, she watched Elite gymnasts at a competition and says, “I knew then that I wanted to be like those girls. I knew that I had four SHAWN JOHNSON years to work my butt off to be ready.” “In 2000 a lot happened. I went Elite from Level 10,” Patterson says. She also remembers dealing with her family’s move to another city and having to change gym’s which she says turned out to be a blessing. “I had to keep an eye on the end goal, stay healthy and keep working,” she says. In the 2003 World Championships, she won 2nd in the All-Around competition, and a year later, she became the U.S. National Co-Champion, and went on to be the first American woman to take the Olympic Gold for the All-Around in 20 years. continued on page 138

Patterson says that gymnasts have a “special connection” whether they are Olympians or beginners in their first year. To all of the gymnasts who share the dream of being the best, Patterson says, “Gymnastics is such a great sport. Even if you don’t go to the Olympics or get a scholarship, it’s a great foundation, develops motor skills and teaches a lot about your body.” She adds, “Be proud just to be a gymnast. You are doing something that not everyone can do.” Asked about the future of the sport of gymnastics, Karolyi says, “There have been crucial moments in the history of gymnastics when I’ve thought ‘This is the most intense and highest performance of human capacity’.” He cites as examples performances by Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. Comaneci is the only gymnast to ever score perfect 10 in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. In 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles, the energetic and physical performance of Mary Lou Retton earned her the all-around gymnastics championship. “The sport is ever developing in difficulty, the components, dance and music. I don’t believe there is a limit now,” Karolyi says. JOHN OROZCO On this topic, Patterson says, “I have already seen the sport of gymnastics rise so much after the 2004 Olympics and it has been great to watch. I only see good things for the future and for our country to keep dominating like we have been!” Citing Retton’s “lovely personality” and “fiery performance,” Karolyi says, “Mary Lou turned the page on gymnastics toward making it the nation’s number one sport.” He points out that women’s gymnastics is the most watched sport in the country. Karolyi calls Retton, “Mary Lou, my sunshine of my coaching career.” He says that unlike some youngsters who were quiet and perhaps intimidated by his coaching style, Retton was bubbly and enthusiastic and enjoyed every second of training and competing. Looking ahead to the next Olympic Games in 2016, Karolyi says, “We are going to try to make it. We will probably retire after 2016,” he says noting that he and his wife have been involved in the sport for some 50 years. “We deserve to retire,” he says, and then after a moment’s pause he adds, “We will never stop contributing as much as we can.”

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in Cranberry in the summer of 2015, will feature two sheets of ice and serve as the Penguins’ official practice rink — but, as Penguins CEO David Morehouse said, “it will be much more than a hockey rink.” The complex will be the first medical facility in the country to focus specifically on hockey-relating training, rehab and injury prevention. “It will be a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility right here in Cranberry,” Morehouse said. UPMC will build the 180,000 square foot facility at an estimated cost of $70 million. The complex will offer expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy, imaging and sports-performance training. “The facility that we are planning here will comprise almost 50,000 square feet of clinical space for world-class orthopaedic and therapy programs,” said Liz Condordia, UPMC executive vice president. continued on page 143

Romoff praised Lemieux, the Hockey Hall of Famer, for his special relationship with UPMC. “We have the Austin’s Playrooms in seven of our hospitals, which Mario and his foundation have provided … the Lemieux sibling complex at Children’s Hospital, and, most recently, our fabulous, completely brand-new Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers,” Romoff said.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. The Elite programs, both boys and girls, are finding tremendous success on the ice as the U18 boys and U14 girls were Tier 1 Elite League Champions this past year. The U14 girls were also bronze medalists at the USA Hockey National Championships. In the National Championships all three eligible boys teams (Midget Major, U14, U16) reached quarterfinals. “Our goal is to make Pittsburgh Penguins Elite the best AAA hockey program in the country,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “But it isn’t just about winning games and championships. is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. If you are interested in donating to the Heads Up Pittsburgh program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 152 136

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 156 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. If you are interested in donating to the Project Power Play program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 159 143

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…
In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.
Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.
The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.
And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. 178 continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION
The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164 181

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS
The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS
The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164 180
teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES
Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168 184

PLAYOFFS
Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straightahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!
THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING
Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-totape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position continued on page 184 200

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”
GET TO THE NET
Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.
WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN
We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com. 208 192

NCAA TOURNAMENT
HAD A WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA ACCENT BY: MIKE PRISUTA
The Robert Morris Colonials’ participation in the NCAA Tournament swelled by four the ranks of Western Pennsylvania products who have skated on college hockey’s biggest stage. Colonials with local ties who took part in RMU’s 7-3 loss to No. 1-seed Minnesota in the NCAA West Regional semifinals on March 29 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. included defenseman Andrew Blazek (Upper St. Clair), forward Zac Lynch (Shaler), center David Rigatti (Peters Township) and left winger Colin South (Sewickley), RMU’s captain in 2013-14. “A lot of fun,” said Lynch, who had a goal and an assist against Minnesota. “And there were other guys on other teams, too.” Lynch was referencing Denver junior right winger Ty Loney (Valencia; former Penguins Stanley Cup winner Troy Loney’s son), Notre Dame senior defenseman Stephen Johns (Wampum) and Minnesota State sophomore canter Dylan Margonari (Greensburg). “Definitely a lot of Pittsburgh presence in the tournament,” Lynch said. continued on page 212

continued from page 211
The players representing Pittsburgh’s college team kept up with the ones from Minnesota, those representing the selfanointed “State of Hockey.” “I’d have to say we did,” Lynch said. “We expected a lot from them and we got it. We showed we could compete with them.” Their presence highlighted the continued growth of hockey in ANDREW BLAZEK Western Pennsylvania. RMU’s appearance confirmed that the 10th-year Division I program has grown dramatically in recent seasons in all aspects of the operation. “It’s really not even comparable to where we were when I came in here as a freshman,” South insisted. “Every year we’ve gotten better, more competitive, nicer equipment. The way we get treated now, we don’t want for anything.” Added Blazek, a fifth-year senior: “Each year that I’ve been here we’ve taken major steps in just respecting our program ourselves. When I first got here guys, they were just enjoying playing college hockey. They were playing D1 but they weren’t as proud of the program as we are now. “Each year we’ve taken strides in that direction.” Blazek didn’t stop taking strides on the ice after the Colonials’ season ended. He joined the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones days after RMU’s loss to Minnesota. Fellow RMU defenseman Evan Renwick, another senior, signed with the ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears. RMU had yet to produce an NHL player entering April, but that time may be coming sooner rather than later. Five former Colonials have dressed for games in the American Hockey League this season: Defenseman Denny Urban (Pittsburgh) with the San Antonio Rampage and Springfield Falcons, winger Nathan Longpre with the Chicago Wolves, winger Adam Brace with the Charlotte Checkers and Bridgeport Sound Tigers, winger Trevor Lewis with San Antonio and goaltender Eric Levine with Syracuse. continued on page 215

The Penguins have inked three of their former draft choices who played in the NCAA this season, including two underclassmen. Signed after their college seasons concluded were Nebraska-Omaha junior right winger Josh Archibald, Notre Dame senior right winger Bryan Rust and MassachusettsLowell junior left winger Scott Wilson. Archibald was a sixthJOSH ARCHIBALD round pick in 2011, Wilson a seventh-round selection in ’11 and Rust a third-round choice in 2010. Archibald was also one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award (college hockey’s version of the Heisman Trophy) after a 29-goal season at Nebraska-Omaha. He had one goal and one point in five games with the American Hockey League’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins through April 5.

IN OTHER RECENT COLLEGE HOCKEY-RELATED DEVELOPMENTS:
The Blackhawks signed Johns to a two-year contract upon the conclusion of Notre Dame’s season. The Irish were beaten by St. Cloud State in the NCAA West Regional semifinals. A second-round pick of Chicago (60th overall) in the 2010 Entry Draft, Johns played four seasons at Notre Dame. Johns, 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, was assigned to Rockford in the American Hockey League and scored his first professional goal on April 5 in a 5-3 loss to Abbotsford. Mercyhurst senior captain Nick Jones (Cranberry Township) was a first-team All-Atlantic Hockey Association defenseman and also received the AHA’s Best Defenseman award. Freshman center Alec Shields (Moon Township) was one of Jones’ teammates at Mercyhurst this season. Penn State won its first Big Ten Tournament game in the program’s two-year Division I history, which also happened to be the first game in Big Ten Tournament history, 2-1 over Michigan in double overtime on March 20. Nittany Lions goaltender Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks) made 52 saves in 92:47 while recording the victory. 215

CAMPS & CLINICS HIGH PERFORMANCE CAMP WITH DON GRANATO The High Performance Camp with Don Granato, Head Coach of the USA Hockey U17 National Team and brother of Pittsburgh Penguins Assistant Coach Tony Granato, will be held June 13-15 at Bladerunners Warrendale. This camp is geared toward elite level hockey players. Don Granato has created a development plan specifically for this camp. This program will mimic how junior, college and professional hockey players improve their game in the off season through position specific skill development.
SCORING CAMP As the saying goes, “You can’t win, if you can’t score.” This camp will focus on the finer points of putting the puck in the net. From working on quick release to shot fakes, the players will learn everything they need to light the lamp. Players will get a chance to shoot a ton of pucks and will be put in different scoring scenarios.
DEFENSEMAN CAMP It is widely recognized that defensemen take more time to develop than forwards. The reason for this is there are more responsibilities bestowed on them. The goal of this camp is to identify these responsibilities and show the skaters how to efficiently accomplish them. The skaters will work on D specific drills that will help them make decisions quicker, become more aggressive, and develop the defensemen’s mentality.
INSTRUCTIONAL 3-ON-3 Hockey is a game of creating opportunities in small spaces. Big Ice 3-on-3 leagues do not allow players to simulate these situations. This makes it easy for them to develop bad habits. In Penguins Hockey Development’s Cross Ice 3-on-3, the players will play on a third of the ice. This ensures that the puck will always be around them, while forcing them to make quick decisions. Goalies will get plenty of realistic shots, not just breakaway after breakaway.
TUNE-UP FOR TRYOUTS AND TUNE-UP FOR GOALIES This camp provides skill development and power-skating instruction from Cliff Loya and Max Ivanov. All goalies will received instruction from Mike Chiasson and Matt Wynn.

CROSBY ENJOYING MVP SEASON BY: SAM KASAN
The Penguins have suffered an extraordinary amount of man-games lost due to injury this year. That number exceeded 500 on April 6 against Colorado, a week before the 2013-14 season is scheduled to end. Yet, despite the enormous amount of injuries — including losses of key players Evgeni Malkin, Rob Scuderi, Paul Martin, Pascal Dupuis, James Neal, Chris Kunitz, Beau Bennett, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — Pittsburgh easily locked up a playoff spot and claimed its first-ever Metropolitan Division title. There have been several factors in the Penguins’ resilient success. But the greatest factor has been the play of their captain. Sidney Crosby, 26, is widely regarded as the best player in the world. His dominant performance on the ice this season leaves no doubt that he is the Penguins — and arguably the NHL’s — most valuable player. Crosby is already the runaway winner of his second-career NHL scoring race. It isn’t even close. As of April 7, Crosby had posted a league-best 102 points on 36 goals and 66 assists. The next closest player was Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf — whose 85 points were 17 behind Crosby. “He’s 17 points ahead of the next guy. That’s pretty amazing,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “You can make a fair amount of money in this league getting 20 points, let alone 20 more points than the second most.” continued on page 236

“NO MATTER WHAT ANGLE YOU LOOK AT, HE’S OUR BEST PLAYER.” ~ MATT NISKANEN
continued from page 235
Crosby reached the 100-point mark on the season with an assist in the Penguins’ 4-1 loss to Carolina on April 1. It is the fifth time in his NHL career that Crosby has hit the 100-point plateau. “It’s a number, it’s nice,” Crosby said of reaching 100. “I don’t think you go into seasons thinking about that. It’s nice when you get the opportunity to do it.” To underscore Crosby’s importance to the Penguins this season, note that as of April 7, Pittsburgh was 46-8-4 whenever Crosby scored a point and 3-16-1 when he is held scoreless. Also, the Penguins are 28-0-2 when Crosby records multiple points and 25-2-3 when he records a goal. “There’s a reason he’s our leader and the best player in the world,” center Brandon Sutter said. “He’s been great. He’s been so consistent. It seems like every night he’s got a goal and an assist or a couple points. He’s been such a threat with the puck. He’s been great all year.” “Even when we haven’t played well as a group he’s found a way to produce,” defenseman Matt Niskanen added. “He’s so consistent. He’s had games where he just absolutely dominates the game and has the puck all the time. “No matter what angle you look at, he’s our best player.” And this offensive production has come with Crosby going headto-head against every opposing team’s best defensive players. As of April 7, Crosby hadn’t gone more than two consecutive games without a point. continued on page 239

“It’s pretty easy for teams to get matchups against him,” Niskanen said. “He’s still found a way to produce.” “He’s depended upon playing against other team’s good players and defensively in those situations for our team,” Bylsma said. “Some people would like to have a better matchup. I wouldn’t. That’s what we count on him to do for our team.” But Crosby’s offensive dominance accounts for only half of his importance to the Penguins. He’s also one of their key defensive players — called upon in critical defensive situations, winning faceoffs and even killing penalties. “The part [people don’t see] is the defensive responsibilities and faceoffs in his own end in key moments of the game,” longtime linemate Chris Kunitz said. “He’s out there on penalty kills. He’s really grown into a more mature version of himself, if that’s possible. He accepts all responsibility when our team doesn’t play well. And doesn’t get enough credit when our team is playing well and winning.” But there is no doubt that the other players inside the Penguins’ locker room are aware of Crosby’s importance to the team. “He’s a special player, fun to play with and fun to watch every night,” Sutter said. “He’s great in the locker room. The way he is and handles himself, there’s a reason why he’s the best player in the world.” And no doubt the most valuable player in the world. “We need him. The game deserves to have him,” Niskanen said. “It’s not easy to maintain as high of a level as he has being out for extended periods of time [with various injuries]. That just shows the character and work ethic that he has. He’s so driven. “When he does anything great anymore, I’m not really surprised.”
