GAME NOTES BY: BOB GROVE

THE SERIES

This is the first Stanley Cup playoff meeting between the Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets, who are in the postseason for the second time in their history. Pittsburgh swept the five-game regular-season series. . . This was the teams' first season as divisional rivals in the Metropolitan Division, and they began their series with a home-and-home set Nov. 1 and 2. Chris Kunitz and Kris Letang scored power-play goals and Evgeni Malkin had two assists in a 4-2 home victory for Pittsburgh in the first game, and goaltender Jeff Zatkoff earned his first NHL shutout with 19 saves in a 3-0 victory the next night in Columbus, where Kunitz's goal in the opening minute of the third period broke open a one-goal game. . . Back in Pittsburgh on Dec. 9, Malkin and Crosby scored in a 2-1 victory. . . Crosby broke a 2-2 tie midway through the third period Dec. 29 in Columbus to start a run of three goals in 6:42 as the Penguins claimed a 5-3 victory. James Neal had two goals and two assists in that game. . . The final regular-season game was played in Columbus on March 28, and it was a scoreless tie until just past the midway point of the third period when Kunitz and Beau Bennett scored 47 seconds apart in a 2-1 victory. It was Bennett's first game back after missing 50 games with a wrist injury. . . continued on page 7

Pittsburgh's power play was 5-for-19 (26.3 percent) this season against Columbus, with all five goals coming in two games. . . The Jackets' power play was 1-for-14 (7.1 percent) against Pittsburgh, with Matt Calvert's goal March 28 snapping a string of 18 consecutive penalty kills by Pittsburgh. . . Games One and Two of this series will be played here at CONSOL Energy Center, with Columbus hosting Games Three and Four. The Penguins are 7-2-1 all-time at Nationwide Arena and have won five consecutive games there since a 4-3 shootout loss March 12, 2009. THE PENGUINS

Pittsburgh is in the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season and 29th season overall. Heading into this series, the Penguins are 30-25 in 55 all-time playoff series and 160-138 in 298 all-time playoff games, making Game Two here the 300th in team playoff history. . . Pittsburgh has won 15 of 26 first-round playoff series. . . The Penguins are 26-29 in Game One of a playoff series, including 19-13 when that game is at home. They are 32-23 in Game Two, including 23-10 when that game is at home. . . THE BLUE JACKETS

Columbus finished the regular season 43-32-7, earning the top wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. . . The Blue Jackets were swept by Detroit in 2009 in their first and only playoff series. The only current Columbus players who skated in that series were Plum's R.J. Umberger, who had three of the seven goals scored against Detroit, and Jared Boll. . . Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky played only 23 minutes this season against Pittsburgh, starting the first game between the teams here on Nov. 1 but leaving the game with a 3-0 deficit early in the second period. He was injured for two other meetings with Pittsburgh and backed up Curtis McElhinny in the other two games. Bobrovsky, the 2013 Vezina Trophy winner, set career highs for wins (32) and shutouts (5) this season despite playing just 58 games. . . Bobrovsky made his NHL debut in the first regular-season game at CONSOL Energy Center for Philadelphia on Oct. 7, 2010, beating the Penguins, 3-2. He was 5-3-1 against the Penguins with a .908 save percentage and 2.83 GAA while playing with Philadelphia, including winning his first five starts in this building. His first loss here at CONSOL Energy Center was the Nov. 1 start here with Columbus. . . Ryan Johansen led Columbus with 33 goals and 63 points this season. . . Defenseman Jack Johnson led all Blue Jackets in scoring in the season series against Pittsburgh (0+3).

WE’RE HERE FOR THE HOCKEY.

LET’S GO PENS

IS PROUD TO BE A PITTSBURGH-BASED BRAND.

AROUND THE NHL BY: MIKE PRISUTA

BLUES BACK AGAIN: St. Louis qualified for the playoffs for the third straight season after missing the postseason in five of the previous six campaigns. D Alex Pietrangelo helped get the Blues there. He entered St Louis’ regular-season finale as the only player in the NHL with at least 50 points (51) and over 200 minutes played on the power play and in short-handed situations.

RED WINGS’ LEADER: Detroit’s 4-2 victory over Buffalo on April 8 moved head coach Mike Babcock into sole possession of the top spot on the franchise’s all-time wins list (414). Babcock is the third head coach to win 400 games for the Red Wings (Jack Adams, 413, 1927-27; Scotty Bowman, 410, 1993-02). The victory over the Sabres was Babcock’s 483rd NHL win, which tied him for 21st on the league’s all-time list. Babcock’s 78 career postseason wins trail only Chicago’s Joel Quenneville (88) among active coaches.

Detroit’s current run trails only Boston (29, 1968-96), Chicago (28, 1970-97), St. Louis (25, 1980-04), and Montreal (24, 1971-94) in NHL history.

CAN DO WITH GIROUX: Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux scored his 28th goal of the season in the Flyers’ 4-3 overtime victory over the Penguins on April 12. The goal tied Giroux’s career-high (2011-12) and improved Philadelphia’s records this season to 21-2-1 when Giroux scores a goal and to 33-15-3 when Giroux scores a point.

LOSSES MINIMAL: The Bruins won the President’s Trophy (most points in the NHL) in part because they didn’t lose more than two games in a row this season. They hadn’t played a season in which they didn’t lose more than two consecutive games since 1977-78. They hadn’t played in a season in which they didn’t go more than two games in a row without winning since 1939-40.

STREAKING: The Red Wings qualified for the playoffs for the 23rd consecutive season.

SCOUTING THE BLUE JACKETS Here’s a look at the key players on the Blue Jackets roster heading into Round One of the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs.

RYAN JOHANSEN | C The 21-year-old will be making his Stanley Cup playoffs debut after leading the Columbus Blue Jackets in scoring during the 2013-14 regular season with 63 points (33G-30A). The fourth pick in the 2010 NHL Draft has steadily improved into a goal scorer for the Blue Jackets. In his first two seasons in the league, Johansen had only 14 goals in 107 games played. Johansen became just the third Blue Jackets player to score 30-plus goals (Rick Nash, Geoff Sanderson).

JACK JOHNSON | D The Blue Jackets premier defenseman plays close to 30 minutes every game and is peaking at the right time. He finished even or plus in 18 of the Blue Jackets’ 23 games since the Olympic break. As a member of the LA Kings, he finished with 12 points (1G-11A) in 12 playoff games in 2010 and 2011. This is his first time in the playoffs since being traded to Columbus on Feb. 23, 2012 in exchange for Jeff Carter. continued on page 23

SERGEI BOBROVSKY | G Last year’s Vezina trophy winner as the NHL’s best goaltender continued his success this season with a .923 save percentage and 2.38 goals-against average. He missed the month of December with a groin injury, but returned Jan. 6 to post 40 saves in a 4-3 shootout win over the Washington Capitals. He also represented his home country of Russia in the Olympics, going 1-0-1 and posting a .952 save percentage as well as a 1.15 goals-against average. Last season, Bobrovsky was the reason the Blue Jackets were in playoff contention for as long as they were and helped them to the postseason this year.

RYAN MURRAY | D Another young gun for the Blue Jackets, the second-overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft has posted 21 points (4G-17A) in 66 games this season. He made his NHL debut this season and will be making his Stanley Cup playoffs debut at only 20 years old. He returned from a shoulder injury on April 4 after missing the entire month of March. The second game back from his return, he scored a goal in Columbus’ 4-0 win over the New York Islanders on April 6.

BRANDON DUBINSKY | C In his second season with the Blue Jackets, Dubinsky was appointed alternate captain and has 50 points (16G-34A) in 76 games played. No stranger to the playoffs, Dubinsky played in 31 postseason games with the New York Rangers. He has 17 career playoff points (7G-10A), including an eight point (4G-4A) run in 10 games during the 2007-08 playoffs. His most recent outing in the playoffs ended with two points (2A) in nine games during the 2012 playoffs. He has a 12.5 shot percentage in the playoffs, which is 3.5 percentage points higher than his 9.0 shot percentage in the regular season in his career.

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins. Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. DAN BYLSMA HEAD COACH

Dan Bylsma is already one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup championship, winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach, and an Atlantic Division title in just four-plus seasons behind the bench. The Grand Haven, Mich. native will be Team USA’s head coach at the 2014 Winter Olympics Games in Sochi, Russia. Bylsma has led the Penguins to three 100-point seasons and five consecutive playoff berths, while becoming the winningest playoff coach in team history with 36 postseason victories and seven playoff series victories. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.669) in team history with an all-time record of 201-93-25. His 201 wins are the second most in team history (Eddie Johnston, 232). In 2008-09, Bylsma penned one of the most remarkable starts to a head coaching career in NHL history. He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. Bylsma was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, inspiring an 18-3-4 run in the final 25 games to climb from 10th to fourth place and home-ice advantage in the opening round. Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as assistant coach with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006. Two seasons later he was promoted to WBS head coach in 2008-09. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-04. He was a member of Anaheim’s 2003 Western Conference championship team. Bylsma played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son, Bryan, and reside in the North Hills. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to a pre-season trip to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point or audio from the team bench during an Evgeni Malkin hat trick, In The Room gives fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy-nominated, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. New episodes air on or around the 15th of each month. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic,’” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. Now, with In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Sidney Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Evgeni Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique one-on-one workout session between coach Bylsma and Kris Letang. continued on page 68

Making a splash

Of all the coatings, paints and stains we’ve made in our 130-year history, two colors stand out among the rest: Black and Gold. Our Pittsburgh roots run deep, and so does our commitment to giving back to the place we call home. And because we bring innovative coatings and glass products to CONSOL Energy Center, we’re proud to be a part of every game. Season Two showcased the dedication and human side of a hockey player. Joe Vitale said goodbye to his wife and kids before a road trip, and two former NHL captains, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow, said goodbye to their old teams as Ray Shero acquired them prior to the trade deadline. Chatter on the bench between James Neal and Malkin during a game highlighted their unique relationship, and the highs and lows of a long postseason run were revealed. The current season began with a trip to West Point. Lessons in leadership, teamwork and sacrifice were stressed — ideals that the 2013-14 Penguins would build upon. The players carried a rock to the top of a mountain — and that rock is handed out after each win to the player who has best exemplified those traits. Tanner Glass was mic’d up during a fight, as was Pascal Dupuis — when he pulled out his own tooth! “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff, said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.

LEARN TO PLAY DEK HOCKEY Hockey is not just played on the ice in the cold winter months and instead can be played anywhere there is a flat surface and a few articles of hockey equipment. For those children wanting to play ice hockey — Pittsburgh area children are fortunate to receive 1,000 sets of free equipment through the Sidney Crosby Learn to Play Program. Similarly, we wish to afford families the opportunity to participate in Dek hockey around the area. The Pittsburgh Penguins are proud to announce the return of the learn to play dek hockey program for 4-12 year olds beginning in May of 2014. The Penguins will partner up with seven local dek hockey rinks in support of the second annual Learn to Play Dek Hockey Program. Dek Star Dek Hockey Center, Murrysville SportZone and Dek Hockey, Bill’s Dek Hockey — Rostraver Twps., Cranberry Dek Hockey, HotShot Indoor Sports Arena, North Park Inline Hockey and South Hills Dek Hockey will all host learn to play programs. The continued on page 112

111

continued on page 111

programs will begin in May with four (4) sessions that are all priced the same ($149) at each dek rink (please see below to view the details of each program). Each participant will receive a program t-shirt along with a full set of equipment from Mylec that will include a helmet, stick, gloves, elbow pads and shin pads. The program will be a fun introduction to ball hockey giving kids the opportunity to learn and build on existing skills of the game. From recreational to professional hockey players, dek hockey is the starting point for many. Please do not miss out on this great opportunity and sign up today! Although dek hockey is not as mainstream as ice hockey, it is just as beneficial to those who participate. For younger children who are developing their game, this allows them to play hockey all year around, including the summer, at a much more economical rate. Another benefit for all participants regardless of age is the physical exercise that dek hockey helps promote. Dek hockey requires all players to play on foot forcing players to run, run, and run some more. There is no gliding like traditional hockey settings so every change in direction and possession the players are forced to change position with quick explosive movements. Similarly to those traditional hockey settings, hand eye coordination is greatly enhanced through regular hockey play.

DEADLINE FOR SIGNUPS ARE APRIL 16TH SO WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO SIGN UP BEFORE ALL REGISTRATIONS ARE FILLED! For more information and to register for the Learn to Play Dek Program please visit PenguinsHockeyDevelopment.com.

RIS LETAN

PENGUINS PROFILE:

KRIS LETANG BY: MARK MADDEN

Kris Letang suffered a stroke in late January. The Penguins defenseman returned to action April 9 when the Penguins beat visiting Detroit, 4-3 via shootout. Letang set up Jussi Jokinen’s third-period goal by dashing end to end with the puck, then launching a shot. Jokinen tapped in the resulting loose puck. The rush was vintage Letang. Lots of speed. Lots of skill. Lots of panache. But things really heated up April 12 when Philadelphia visited CONSOL Energy Center. The old enemy. Letang got in a scrap with the Flyers’ Scott Hartnell midway through the third period. No harm done. You can’t play hockey in bubble wrap. Letang and Hartnell each got roughing penalties. Letang tied the score 3-3 with 37 seconds left in regulation, driving to the blue paint to net a backhand from close range. He got a breakaway in overtime but got stopped by goaltender Ray Emery. The Flyers ultimately got an OT goal from Mark Streit to escape with two points, but it was a banner day for Letang. The scuffle with Hartnell didn’t bother Letang one bit. “It’s part of the game,” said Letang, 26. “I got hit from behind, I turned around, and it was [Hartnell]. I wasn’t really shocked. “Things happen fast in the game. No regret. It’s part of the game.” continued on page 121

IN

GAMES, LETANG HAD

11 GOALS AND 11 ASSISTS. SIX OF HIS GOALS CAME ON THE POWER PLAY, ALSO A CAREER BEST.

continued from page 119

As for his game-tying tally, Letang said, “The goal felt good. But at the end of the day, I want to win. It doesn’t matter if I feel good or not. The most important thing is to win. “The result is disappointing, but I thought we played a good game overall. We outshot them [36-21]. We played in their zone. Their goaltending was really good tonight. If we go into the playoffs and play that way, we’re going to win games.” Letang almost won the game for the Penguins, but Emery robbed him in OT. “The ice was getting a little tougher to stickhandle, so I tried to simplify my move,” Letang said. “But he made a great save. I hit his shoulder or something. I could have ended it. I should have.” Letang certainly didn’t come back to a light workload. He played 22:30 vs. Detroit, then 23:42 vs. Philadelphia. He played five-on-five and special teams. Letang’s goal against the Flyers was his 11th of the season, a career high. In 37 games, Letang had 11 goals and 11 assists. Six continued on page 123

121

continued from page 121

of his goals came on the power play, also a career best. Letang missed 26 games because of the stroke. “At one point in the game I looked at him, and he didn’t have a drop of sweat on him. He’s got unique and rare conditioning, and skating ability,” Coach Dan Bylsma said after Letang returned against Detroit. “He’s been out a couple months, and he looked pretty darn good out there defending against good players and playing hard. He made some good plays and made a difference in the game.” “I felt pretty good,” said Letang after helping defeat Detroit. “I had a lot of fun. It wasn’t perfect structure-wise for me. I’m just happy to be on the ice. It’s something I missed a lot. I’m glad to play with this bunch of guys in this dressing room. It was fun to be a part of.” Letang was named the game’s No. 1 star vs. Detroit. The CONSOL Energy Center fans roared for Letang when the announcement was made. “We always talk about Pittsburgh and how great the fans are,” Letang said. “The ovation was great. They were behind me through the injury, and understood me taking my time [before returning]. “I’m not going to look behind me. I’m going to look forward. I’m trying to make strides. Now I need to get the timing back and get into my role.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

PENGUINS ELITE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is quickly becoming the premiere AAA hockey program in the area, will feature 14 teams — nine boys teams and five girls teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. The Elite programs, both boys and girls, are finding tremendous success on the ice as the U18 boys and U14 girls were Tier 1 Elite League Champions this past year. The U14 girls were also bronze medalists at the USA Hockey National Championships. In the National Championships all three eligible boys teams (Midget Major, U14, U16) reached quarterfinals. “Our goal is to make Pittsburgh Penguins Elite the best AAA hockey program in the country,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “But it isn’t just about winning games and championships. It’s about giving these young players the opportunity to test themselves against the best competition while learning important life lessons about continued on page 135

sportsmanship, teamwork, dedication and discipline. Our partners at DICK’S Sporting Goods make this all possible, along with the commitment of an outstanding group of coaches and parents. We look forward to another successful season for Penguins Elite, both on and off the ice.” The Penguins Elite also host annually the Icebreaker Tournament during Labor Day weekend, and the Pittsburgh Girls Thanksgiving Classic, which is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center. 135

TABLETS IN EDUCATION The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is proud to announce the launch of an innovative new program, Tablets in Education. This new educational program utilizes the Kindle Fire HDX, the latest in tablet technology, to motivate students to learn through unique educational apps and programs. Through a partnership with the Allegheny County Intermediate Unit (AIU3), the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation was able to provide 1,200 free tablets — 20 per school — as well as mass charging stations, Kindle FreeTime Kid-Proof Cases and more than $100,000 in educational apps to 60 schools in Allegheny County. “The opportunity to positively impact so many students in Allegheny County makes this our most important educational program to date,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Penguins Foundation. “By providing these free tablets, we believe we can help teachers stimulate the learning process — not only enhancing students’ interest in reading and math but also helping to develop critical thinking, writing and communication skills.” One of the schools benefitting from the new program is Avalon Elementary School in the Northgate School District. On March 13, 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation launched the program from the school in Miss O’Donnell’s fifth grade classroom. The students showed how they are benefiting from the apps on the devices and how they will be used in their day-to-day class work. For more information about Tablets in Education, visit pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com.

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! Six new rinks have been built toKIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE date, with four more coming by the end of 2014. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began this $2.25 million project in the summer of 2012 in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2015, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks. The goal of this project is to introduce children to the game of hockey at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. If you are interested in donating to the Project Power Play program or for more information, visit pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com. 143

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…

In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.

The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.

And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164

teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168

PLAYOFFS

Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in Cranberry in the summer of 2015, will feature two sheets of ice and serve as the Penguins’ official practice rink — but, as Penguins CEO David Morehouse said, “it will be much more than a hockey rink.” The complex will be the first medical facility in the country to focus specifically on hockey-relating training, rehab and injury prevention. “It will be a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility right here in Cranberry,” Morehouse said. UPMC will build the 180,000 square foot facility at an estimated cost of $70 million. The complex will offer expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy, imaging and sports-performance training. “The facility that we are planning here will comprise almost 50,000 square feet of clinical space for world-class orthopaedic and therapy programs,” said Liz Condordia, UPMC executive vice president. continued on page 173

2013.14 PENGUINS

REGULAR SEASON RECAP BY: ADDISON SMITH

Here is a look back at your 2013-14 Pittsburgh Penguins: METROPOLITAN DIVISION DOMINANCE

In the first year of the NHL’s realignment plan, the Pittsburgh Penguins did just fine. In fact, they absolutely dominated the new Metropolitan Division — leading the second-place team by doubledigit points in the standings the majority of the season. The eight-team division consisted of Pittsburgh, the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Washington Capitals, the New Jersey Devils and the Carolina Hurricanes. While the seeding in spots 2-8 changed throughout the year, one thing remained the same, and that was the Penguins cemented firmly at the top of the division. TRADE DEADLINE

When the Penguins lost Pascal Dupuis for the rest of the season to a torn ACL on Dec. 23, general manager Ray Shero thought it would be almost impossible to trade for somebody that could fill in on the right wing of the first line with Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz. But it ended up working out for the Penguins, as Lee Stempniak did a fantastic job of slotting in there after being acquired from Calgary at the trade deadline for a third-round draft pick. It only took a few games for Stempniak to start gelling with his new linemates, and he said that his comfort level with Crosby and Kunitz kept growing throughout the season. continued on page 191

“I think we’re just trying to skate and not pass up shots when you have them,” Stempniak said of his approach to playing on that line. “[Crosby] is so dynamic, he opens LEE STEMPNIAK up a lot. [Kunitz] has a great shot and it’s a pretty dangerous line with those two guys. For me it’s trying to fit in and skate and keep up, and make sure I’m retrieving pucks and then getting open areas.” Pittsburgh also acquired center Marcel Goc from the Florida Panthers for a 2014 fifth-round MARCEL GOC draft pick and a 2015 third-round draft pick at the trade deadline. He suffered a foot injury on March 27 vs. Los Angeles and was given a three-week timetable for recovery. OLYMPIC BREAK

The NHL took a two-and-a-half week break in the middle of February for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Seven players represented their countries in the games, while Ray Shero, Dan Bylsma, Tony Granato and Andy Saucier were all part of Team USA’s Olympic staff. When it was all over, four Penguins returned to the Steel City with medals around their necks. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby — who also served in that capacity for Team Canada for the first time in his career — and linemate Chris Kunitz won gold, while Team Finland players Jussi Jokinen and Olli Maatta returned with bronze. Defensemen Paul Martin and Brooks Orpik played for Team USA, while Evgeni Malkin represented host Russia.

INJURIES

This season, the Penguins still managed to clinch the Metropolitan Division with injuries to key defensemen and forwards. In total, the Penguins suffered 529 man-games lost, including lengthy absences for goalie Tomas Vokoun (blood clot), Pascal Dupuis (ACL/MCL tears), Kris Letang (stroke) and Paul Martin (leg and hand). Yet even with these injuries, the Penguins kept marching on, showing the depth of the organization. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton call ups Brian Gibbons, Jayson Megna, Philip Samuelsson, Brian Dumoulin, Zach Sill and Adam Payerl all made their NHL debuts. They were joined by other Wilkes-Barre call ups Simon Despres, Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, Andrew Ebbett, Chris Conner, Nick Drazenovic and Harry Zolnierczyk. At one point this season, the Penguins were without all top-4 defensemen at the same time with Letang, Martin, Brooks Orpik and Rob Scuderi all out with different injuries. The Penguins also lost center Evgeni Malkin for the last 11 games of the regular season with a foot injury. One of the more devastating injuries for the team came on Dec. 23 against Ottawa when Dupuis left the game with a torn ACL/ MCL. He missed the rest of the regular season and most likely the entire postseason. The Penguins also had another scare when it was reported that Letang had a stroke. He missed 10 weeks and returned on April 9 against Detroit at home to a roaring round of applause from the fans at CONSOL Energy Center. continued on page 195

Though, when asked about it, he didn’t seem fazed. “It’s a number, it’s nice,” Crosby said. “I don’t think you go into seasons thinking about that. It’s nice when you get the opportunity to do it.” Centering the top line, he still found ways to produce when his usual right wing Pascal Dupuis was out with an ACL/MCL tear. He saw Beau Bennett, Lee Stempniak, Gibbons, Sutter and more at right wing. James Neal even joined the top line, if only for a fleeting moment. Crosby is the leading candidate to win his second-career Hart Trophy as NHL MVP. He recorded 30 multipoint games, including 13 games of three or more points, and accounted for 43 percent of the Penguins’ scoring — the highest mark in the NHL. The Penguins were 25-2-3 when Crosby scored a goal and 47-8-5 when he recorded a point. continued on page 196

OUTDOOR HOCKEY

The Penguins participated in their third outdoor game when they took on the Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field as part of the NHL’s Stadium Series on March 1. Though the Penguins lost the contest, 5-1, the scene of the two teams playing through the falling snow — in a snow globe — in one of the NFL’s legendary venues gave a lasting image of the event. The Penguins participated in the inaugural Winter Classic in Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Stadium in 2008 and hosted the Washington Capitals at Heinz Field in 2011. HOME DOMINANCE

This season, the Penguins managed to win their 100th game at CONSOL Energy Center on April 9 against the Detroit Red Wings. It was the quickest any team in the NHL has won 100 home games since the beginning of the 2010 season, when the new arena first opened to the public. The Penguins won 28 games at home, including a 13-game home winning streak from Nov. 15, 2013 with a win against the Nashville Predators to Jan. 15, 2014 when the Penguins beat the Washington Capitals. The Penguins winning streak was snapped by the Florida Panthers on Jan. 20 when they beat the Penguins 5-1. 196

POSTSEASON RECIPE:

“HEART, WILL AND DESIRE AND MARC-ANDRE FLEURY” BY: MIKE PRISUTA

After battling injury and adversity all season, the Penguins took their fight against both to the extreme just prior to the outset of the postseason. Having done so as well as the Penguins did on April 6 at Colorado could pay dividends, if necessary. “It means a lot to us,” center Brandon Sutter said of the Penguins’ 3-2 shootout win in the final road game of the regular season. “That’s a gutty win. That could be a big character builder for us, a great character builder for us.” It could be that because of the venue, and because of the quality of opposition presented by the Avalanche. And it could be that because of all the Penguins didn’t have. That list was headed for the first time in 2013-14 by captain Sidney Crosby. Also sitting out the Avalanche game were Chris Kunitz and Brooks Orpik, who, like Crosby, had played in the Penguins’ 4-0 loss the previous night in Minnesota. Already out were Olli Maatta, Joe Vitale, Marcel Goc, Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin. “We’ve found a way so many times this year,” said forward Jussi Jokinen. “[Against the Avalanche] we missed the most key guys we missed all year. “You never know, that could happen in the playoffs, too.” continued on page 201

Should it happen in the playoffs, the Penguins can at least attempt to deal with it knowing there’s recent evidence that suggests a key injury or two or more need not necessarily be dealbreaking developments. The Penguins battled the Avalanche with a “road-game mentality, a playoff-game mentality,” according to head coach Dan Bylsma, a mentality they’ll no doubt attempt to adopt throughout the postseason, especially on the road. Sutter’s summation was even more direct: “Everyone came to play.” The Penguins did so deploying the following combinations: Forwards (from left to right): Beau Bennett-Jokinen-James Neal, Tanner Glass-Sutter-Lee Stempniak, Taylor Pyatt-Andrew Ebbett-Brian Gibbons, and Jayson Megna-Craig Adams-Adam Payerl. Defense: Paul Martin-Robert Bortuzzo, Rob Scuderi-Matt Niskanen and Simon Despres-Deryk Engelland. Goal: Marc-Andre Fleury. That relatively motley crew was outshot by the Avalanche, 41-32, and Colorado was also able to win 62 percent of the face-offs. But the Penguins won the hustle/effort stats. They outhit the Avalanche, 34-24, and Pittsburgh blocked 12 shots to Colorado’s 10. In terms of execution and puck management, the Pens finished with 14 takeaways to 12 for the Avalanche, and with one giveaway to Colorado’s six. Pittsburgh also won the special-teams battle via a 1-for-2 effort on the power play and by killing all four Colorado manadvantage opportunities. continued on page 203

And then there was Fleury. “Marc-Andre had to be huge,” Bylsma acknowledged. “There were some point-blank [shots] he had to be big on. “He was extremely big.” All of the above is a recipe for postseason success regardless of the names on the back of the jerseys. It all came together so well in the second period “we would have extended that time if we could,” Bylsma said. Sutter thought the Penguins played as well in that second 20 minutes at Colorado as they have all season. The win improved their all-time record minus Crosby and Malkin since Malkin joined the team in 2006-07 to 28-13-5, a winning percentage of .663. That was actually higher than the Penguins’ all-time winning percentage with Crosby and Malkin in the lineup together (253-123-36, .658) entering the final week of the regular season. So there’s that history to fall back on in the event the Penguins find themselves in scramble mode in the postseason. Recent events, the Colorado game and many of those that preceded it in 2013-14, also suggest injuries can be overcome. The players who didn’t play against the Avalanche ran the Penguins’ total of man-games lost this season due to injury to 505, well ahead of second-place Detroit’s 396 prior to the Red WingsPenguins reunion on April 9 at CONSOL Energy Center. And yet the victory in Colorado was the Penguins’ 50th of the season. As analyst Bob Errey so eloquently put it at the conclusion of ROOT Sports’ broadcast, the Penguins were able to prevail despite a depleted lineup by relying on “heart, will and desire and Marc-Andre Fleury.” The Penguins enter the playoffs having reminded themselves that, if they have to be, that stuff can sometimes be more than enough. 203

PIT VS. CBJ

SERIES STORYLINES Pittsburgh and Columbus always had the potential to become rivals, with their relatively short distance to each other. According to Mapquest, Columbus is the closest geographical rival to Pittsburgh, as the distance between CONSOL Energy Center and Nationwide Arena is only 186.13 miles using the quickest suggested route — about a two-and-a-half to three-hour drive. And after playing each other just 14 times in 13 years since Columbus entered the league back in 2000, that potential started to be realized this season when the two teams moved into the same division under the NHL’s new realignment plan. Now, it may come to fruition when the two clubs meet in the first round of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Here are a few of the main storylines to follow as the series progresses. EXPERIENCE

Pittsburgh certainly has the advantage over Columbus when it comes to playoff experience. We’ll see if the battle-tested Penguins can use that to overwhelm this young, inexperienced Blue Jackets squad. And when we say young, we mean young. The Blue Jackets are the most youthful team in the NHL with an average age of 26.1 (Pittsburgh is the third-oldest). And entering Game One, the players on Pittsburgh’s roster have combined to play in 1,154 playoff games versus 251 for Columbus. They are going to the playoffs for just the second time in franchise history, getting swept in the first round by Detroit in 2009 during their only other appearance. continued on page 218

continued from page 216

To make it even tougher for the Blue Jackets, because of injuries, the limited postseason experience Columbus does have is sorely depleted going into the first round. Their most valuable player in that regard, forward Nathan Horton — who advanced to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011 (winning the championship that year) and again last season as a member of the Boston Bruins, is out six weeks following abdominal surgery. The Jackets also may be without two more key veteran forwards, at least to start the first round. Plum native R.J. Umberger and Nick Foligno are both out indefinitely due to injury, and Richards said neither player may be ready for the beginning of playoffs. GOALTENDING

This series should feature an exciting goaltending battle, as it will be 2009 Stanley Cup hero Marc-Andre Fleury versus reigning Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky. Fleury enters the playoffs coming off yet another spectacular regular season, one of the finest of his career. But in sports, players aren’t judged on what they do in the regular season — it’s about how they perform in the postseason. That’s particularly true for Fleury, who’s had two rough springs with the Penguins. During the 2013 playoffs, Fleury was replaced by Tomas Vokoun following Game Four of their opening-round series against the New York Islanders and did not play the remainder of the playoffs. That came a year after Pittsburgh’s defense imploded during its opening-round matchup with Philadelphia in 2012, allowing 30 goals in six games — giving Fleury a .834 save percentage and 4.63 goals-against average. But although Fleury’s numbers and results over the past two postseasons haven’t been up to his usual standards, that doesn’t mean he can’t regain his 2009 Cup-championship winning form. That was his goal coming into the season, and Fleury quietly worked on things he wanted to change and improve on these past few months — learned during his continued on page 220

tough playoff experiences — to help him achieve it. We’ll see if it all pays off. Fleury’s counterpart at the other end of the ice has been incredible backstopping this Columbus team and is the single biggest reason that they’re in the dance this year. Bobrovsky proved over the last two seasons that he’s not just a capable starting goaltender; he’s one of the best in the league. However, he still has a lot to prove when it comes to the playoffs. The 25-year-old has made just seven career playoff appearances, including three starts. The Penguins have seen him just once, when the Flyers knocked the Penguins out two years ago. He played 37 minutes in Game Four, allowing five goals on 18 shots. LET’S GET PHYSICAL

The Blue Jackets’ style of play seems to be tailor-made for the postseason. Columbus is a physical, relentless, hard-working team that prides itself on being tough to play against. As Blue Jackets defenseman James Wisniewski put it, “we try to grind [teams] down, so that by the third period they just don’t want to play anymore … We play a big, heavy game.” The work ethic is there every night as the Jackets play hard through all three zones, focusing on winning the one-on-one battles and getting in on the forecheck. Dan Bylsma called them “one of the hardest-working, forechecking groups that goes to the net really, really hard.” They also play with speed, something a lot of the Penguins players noted on Sunday night. That was reflected statistically, as the Blue Jackets set a franchise record with more than 2,500 hits this season — led by agitating forward Brandon Dubinsky, who’s certainly had his share of skirmishes with Pittsburgh’s star players dating back to his time with the New York Rangers. So the Penguins, especially Sidney Crosby and potentially Evgeni Malkin, will have their work cut out for them against this punishing Blue Jackets team — who are going to do everything they can to stop this talented Pittsburgh team. The question is, will the Penguins be able to battle through it? 220
