GAME NOTES BY: BOB GROVE

THE SERIES

The Penguins and New York Rangers complete their Eastern Conference Semifinal series here tonight at CONSOL Energy Center, the first Game Seven in five all-time playoff matchups between the teams. The Rangers have rallied from a 3-1 series deficit with two consecutive victories. Derick Brassard had two goals in a 5-1 Game Five win here last Friday night, and Sunday night in New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 36 saves and Martin St. Louis and Carl Hagelin scored early in the first period for a 3-1 Rangers’ win . . . The Penguins had seized control of the series with three consecutive wins in Games TwoFour. Pittsburgh allowed a team-record 15 shots to New York in a 4-2 Game Four win at Madison Square Garden in Game Four, with Brandon Sutter scoring short-handed late in the second period to break a 1-1 tie and Evgeni Malkin scoring one goal and setting up another. . . In Game Three at the Garden two nights earlier, Marc-Andre Fleury made 35 saves for his second consecutive shutout, a 2-0 victory helped by goals from Sidney Crosby and Jussi Jokinen. It was the first time in Penguins’ history they recorded shutouts in consecutive playoff games. . . In Game Two, Fleury made 22 saves for his team-record seventh playoff shutout, a 3-0 win that included a goal and two assists continued on page 7

from Kris Letang. . . New York won Game One of a playoff series against the Penguins for the first time when Brassard’s goal at 3:06 of overtime gave the Rangers a 3-2 victory. Benoit Pouliot and Brad Richards also scored for New York in that game, while second-period goals by Lee Stempniak and James Neal rallied the Penguins from a 2-0 first-period deficit . . . The team that scores first has won every game of this series. . . The winner of this series faces the winner of the MontrealBoston series. The Bruins took a 3-2 series edge into Game Six in Montreal last night. Should Boston and Pittsburgh win their respective series, their second consecutive meeting in the Eastern Conference Final would begin in Boston; should the Penguins and Canadiens win their respective series, that series would start here in Pittsburgh. THE PENGUINS

Brooks Orpik returned to the lineup in Game Four after missing five games with an injury, but he was injured in that game and did not play in Games Five and Six. . . The Penguins are 7-6 all-time in Game Sevens, including a 5-0 mark on the road and a 2-6 mark on home ice. Pittsburgh has lost three straight Game Sevens at home and four of the last five at home, the last victory coming in 1995 against Washington (3-0). Both Game Seven home victories have been shutouts, as the Penguins beat New Jersey, 4-0, in 1991. . . In their last Three home Game Sevens, the Penguins have been outscored, 9-3. . . When the Penguins allow the first goal in a home Game Seven, they are 0-5. . . Tonight’s game is the 13th of this post-season for Pittsburgh, which played 15 games last year in the playoffs. . . Pittsburgh goal in Game Six, giving him five for these playoffs. He, Malkin and Jokinen have combined for 17 of the Penguins’ 34 goals in these playoffs. . . Pittsburgh is 2-4 in the last six games in which it faced elimination, including losses in each of the last two against Philadelphia in 2012 and Boston last spring. . . Pittsburgh has allowed the first goal in six straight elimination games and 12 of the last 16. . . The Penguins’ power play is 1-for-19 in this series. THE RANGERS

Kris Krieder’s first-period goal in Game Five here snapped an 0-for-36 drought on the power play for the Rangers, tying the NHL post-season record (Anaheim, 2007). It was his first goal since returning from an injury to make his series debut in Game Three . . . Lundqvist’s Game Six victory Sunday night gave him a perfect 7-0 record in his last seven home games with New York facing elimination. . . Brassard has four goals in the series for New York, including three in the past two games.

SCOUTING THE RANGERS The Pittsburgh Penguins will play the New York Rangers in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Here are five Blueshirts to watch…

BRAD RICHARDS | C One of the few Rangers already with a Stanley Cup to his name, Brad Richards has been clutch for teams during the postseason. When he won it all with Tampa Bay in 2004, Richards was chosen as the Conn Smythe winner (playoff MVP) — finishing the Lightning’s run with 26 points (12G-14A) in 23 games played. Now 33 years old, Richards’ game isn’t quite where it was back then. He had an especially rough lockout-shortened season (his second with the Rangers) and was in danger of being bought out by the team, but has since rebounded to become their leader both on and off the ice. Richards finished the regular season with 20 goals and 51 points, and the playmaking center — who quarterbacks the power play — has been one of New York’s most productive players this postseason.

RYAN MCDONAGH | D The Rangers’ top defenseman was also a member of Team USA in Sochi. McDonagh plays in every situation for the Blueshirts, including the power play and penalty kill, and logs huge minutes for the Blueshirts. McDonagh is a big, physical defenseman who excels in a shutdown role next to Dan Girardi but can also provide offense with his mobility and instincts. A former first-round draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens, the 24-year-old Minnesota native has played all four of his NHL campaigns with the Rangers. He finished the regular season with 43 points (14G-29A) in 77 games played. continued on page 23

MARTIN ST. LOUIS | RW The subject of arguably the biggest trade this season, Martin St. Louis was relatively underwhelming in the regular season for the Rangers. Last year’s scoring champion finished with just one goal and eight points in 19 games after being traded from Tampa Bay in exchange for Rangers captain Ryan Callahan. However, St. Louis kicked it into gear in the first round of the playoffs and has become everything the Rangers hoped he would be when they acquired the veteran forward. St. Louis may not be the biggest guy, but he’s a warrior with the heart of a lion. He won the Stanley Cup with Richards in 2004. St. Louis was also named a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for exemplary sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct.

DEREK STEPAN | C A member of Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma’s Team USA squad at the Olympics this February, Stepan finished the regular season with a career-high 57 points (17G-40A) while playing in all 82 games for the New York Rangers. His 40 assists were also a career high. The 24-year-old has played four seasons in the NHL, all with the Rangers — who drafted him 51st overall in the second round back in 2008. Stepan — who was a Wisconsin Badger with fellow Ranger and Team USA member Ryan McDonagh — has since developed into an integral part of this Rangers team, centering the first line between Rick Nash and St. Louis and slotting in on the first power-play unit. He’s a versatile, crafty player with excellent playmaking skills and creativity.

HENRIK LUNDQVIST | G The Penguins will be going up against one of the league’s best goaltenders in Henrik Lundqvist. He finished the NHL regular season with 33 wins in 63 games, posting a .920 save percentage and a 2.36 goals against average. He was also a member of Team Sweden at the Olympics and returned to New York with a silver medal, finishing with a .943 save percentage — including two shutouts against Slovenia and Switzerland. Lundqvist, 32, is a veteran with an illustrious pedigree, but the 2012 Vezina winner (and four-time nominee) as the league’s top netminder still doesn’t have a Stanley Cup to his name. He rebounded to finish New York’s series against the Flyers strong after being pulled in Game Six, where he allowed four goals in the Rangers’ 5-2 loss.

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY SHERO

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins. Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair. 38

DAN BYLSMA HEAD COACH

Dan Bylsma is already one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup championship, winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach, and an Atlantic Division title in just four-plus seasons behind the bench. The Grand Haven, Mich. native will be Team USA’s head coach at the 2014 Winter Olympics Games in Sochi, Russia. Bylsma has led the Penguins to three 100-point seasons and five consecutive playoff berths, while becoming the winningest playoff coach in team history with 36 postseason victories and seven playoff series victories. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.669) in team history with an all-time record of 201-93-25. His 201 wins are the second most in team history (Eddie Johnston, 232). In 2008-09, Bylsma penned one of the most remarkable starts to a head coaching career in NHL history. He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. Bylsma was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, inspiring an 18-3-4 run in the final 25 games to climb from 10th to fourth place and home-ice advantage in the opening round. Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as assistant coach with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006. Two seasons later he was promoted to WBS head coach in 2008-09. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-04. He was a member of Anaheim’s 2003 Western Conference championship team. Bylsma played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son, Bryan, and reside in the North Hills. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

Jacques Martin is in his first season on the Penguins coaching staff. Martin, 61, has spent nearly 30 years coaching at the NHL level, serving as head coach with St. Louis (1986-88), Ottawa (1995-2004), Florida (2005-08) and Montreal (2009-12) and as an assistant coach with Chicago (1988-90) and Quebec/Colorado (1990-95). Martin was an associate coach on the 2002 Canadian Olympic squad that won a gold medal in Salt Lake City. MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his first season as Pittsburgh’s goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the club’s goaltender development coach. Under Bale’s tutelage during the 2012-13 season, goaltenders Jeff Zatkoff and Brad Thiessen of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins combined to allow the fewest goals (178) in the American Hockey League (AHL). Zatkoff’s 1.93 goals-against average was the lowest in the AHL. Bales, who hails from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the National Hockey League with Boston and Ottawa. Bales, who was originally drafted by Boston in the fifth round of the 1990 NHL Draft, also saw action in the American Hockey League, the International Hockey League, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University from 1989-92. Mike and his wife, Melanie, have three children, William, Alexander and Alexa. Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and especially Boston (we haven’t forgotten).

6.

Notice. Any opinions contrary to the letter of this Agreement will

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, all Parties have executed this Agreement effective as of the date first above written. Let’s Go Pens.

Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to a pre-season trip to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point or audio from the team bench during an Evgeni Malkin hat trick, In The Room gives fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy-nominated, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. New episodes air on or around the 15th of each month. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic,’” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. Now, with In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Sidney Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Evgeni Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique one-on-one workout session between coach Bylsma and Kris Letang. continued on page 68

Making a splash

Of all the coatings, paints and stains we’ve made in our 130-year history, two colors stand out among the rest: Black and Gold. Our Pittsburgh roots run deep, and so does our commitment to giving back to the place we call home. And because we bring innovative coatings and glass products to CONSOL Energy Center, we’re proud to be a part of every game. To see what other winning color formulas we’re bringing to the surface, visit ppg.com.

Season Two showcased the dedication and human side of a hockey player. Joe Vitale said goodbye to his wife and kids before a road trip, and two former NHL captains, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow, said goodbye to their old teams as Ray Shero acquired them prior to the trade deadline. Chatter on the bench between James Neal and Malkin during a game highlighted their unique relationship, and the highs and lows of a long postseason run were revealed. The current season began with a trip to West Point. Lessons in leadership, teamwork and sacrifice were stressed — ideals that the 2013-14 Penguins would build upon. The players carried a rock to the top of a mountain — and that rock is handed out after each win to the player who has best exemplified those traits. Tanner Glass was mic’d up during a fight, as was Pascal Dupuis — when he pulled out his own tooth! “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,” said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

LETANG LEADING FROM THE BLUE LINE BY: SAM KASAN

After the Penguins lost Game One of their Second Round Stanley Cup playoff matchup with the New York Rangers, the team desperately needed to win Game Two to avoid a home sweep. Pittsburgh needed its best players to step up more than ever. And that’s exactly what happened. Much has already been written about the standout performances of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, as well as the contributions of others. But one player that really helped change the course of this series was defenseman Kris Letang. In the critical Game Two contest, Letang scored the game’s first goal — which would be the eventual game-winner — while cutting to the net and snapping a centering pass to a crashing Chris Kunitz. The puck went off the stick of New York’s Dan Girardi and through goalie Henrik Lundqvist. Even though it wasn’t the plan, the goal was a result of Letang aggressively joining the rush and creating opportunities. “It’s easier when I move my feet than when I stay standing still,” Letang said. “I’m not like a guy like (Rob Scuderi) backward skating all game and making big plays with his stick. I need to skate forward and make plays when I’m on the rush and supporting guys.” 118

Letang would also set up the final two Penguins’ goals to finish with three points on the night. The most impressive was his assist on Malkin’s empty-net goal that sealed the Penguins’ 3-0 win and evened the series at 1-1. The Penguins were stuck in the defensive zone when Letang sprinted toward the blue line for a loose puck. He dove on the ice and swatted the puck out of the zone. Malkin would locate it and score. It was a stellar defensive play that was rewarded with an assist. Letang followed that up with another strong performance in Game Three, working as a shutdown pair with Paul Martin. He finished with a plus-1 rating in 24:31 minutes of ice time as Pittsburgh won 2-0 to take a 2-1 series lead. The fact that Letang is even able to play — let alone at the level he’s displayed in Games Two and Three — is remarkable. After all, there were questions about whether or not he would play hockey ever again due to a stroke he suffered Jan. 29. Letang was on blood-thinners for six weeks. He returned to skating and practicing after that six-week period and made a triumphant return April 9 vs. Detroit. “A month ago I didn’t anticipate or think about him playing one game,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “It wasn’t part of the thought process in terms of our team. We knew what the doctors said and the situation he was in. We didn’t put any thought into him being back in 10 weeks and playing at a high level.” There were some bumps along the way. Letang struggled at the onset of the postseason, and even received continued on page 121

119

continued from page 119

a lecture from his head coach in regards to a few penalties he took. Letang said part of the problem was mental. “I’m not going to lie, the first four games of the playoffs I was scared to make mistakes,” Letang said. “I got criticism last year on my defensive play so I was a little bit on my heels, trying to accomplish too much.” Letang started by concentrating on cleaning up his defensive play. Late in the Columbus series he went over the boards with a defense-first mentality. Once his defensive play improved, he started to once again assert himself on the rush and creating offense. “I was trying to play my game,” Letang said. “My game is playing aggressive, skating and being in the play all the time, supporting my forwards. Once I was able to do that my game kind of changed.” Bylsma saw the transformation in his game. And part of it may be his defensive partner. “Kris did learn to trust his game a little bit more as he got his feet wet,” Bylsma said. “Last night the way he defended with his skating was huge for us. Playing next to Paul [Martin] has been really good for us back there. That pairing defensively shut down, but also what he brings to our team has been really good.” Letang, who worked with Scuderi at the start of the postseason, switched to partner with Martin after Brooks Orpik was knocked out of the lineup with an undisclosed injury. “Playing with ‘Paulie’ is different than playing with ‘Scuds,’” Letang said. “Scuds stays back and makes plays from the backend. With Paulie, we understand each other pretty well. We play the same type of game. It’s been good. We’re reading each other pretty well.” The Penguins are ecstatic with Letang’s play, but more so happy just to have him back. “It’s just a blessing to see him out there playing and playing at the level he is for our team and playing so many minutes,” Bylsma said. “It’s nothing more than a blessing that he’s out there playing for us.” 121

PENGUINS ELITE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is quickly becoming the premiere AAA hockey program in the area, will feature 14 teams — nine boys teams and five girls teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. The Elite programs, both boys and girls, are finding tremendous success on the ice as the U18 boys and U14 girls were Tier 1 Elite League Champions this past year. The U14 girls were also bronze medalists at the USA Hockey National Championships. In the National Championships all three eligible boys teams (Midget Major, U14, U16) reached quarterfinals. “Our goal is to make Pittsburgh Penguins Elite the best AAA hockey program in the country,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “But it isn’t just about winning games and championships. It’s about giving these young players the opportunity to test themselves against the best competition while learning important life lessons about continued on page 135

sportsmanship, teamwork, dedication and discipline. Our partners at DICK’S Sporting Goods make this all possible, along with the commitment of an outstanding group of coaches and parents. We look forward to another successful season for Penguins Elite, both on and off the ice.” The Penguins Elite also host annually the Icebreaker Tournament during Labor Day weekend, and the Pittsburgh Girls Thanksgiving Classic, which is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center. 135

TABLETS IN EDUCATION The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is proud to announce the launch of an innovative new program, Tablets in Education. This new educational program utilizes the Kindle Fire HDX, the latest in tablet technology, to motivate students to learn through unique educational apps and programs. Through a partnership with the Allegheny County Intermediate Unit (AIU3), the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation was able to provide 1,200 free tablets — 20 per school — as well as mass charging stations, Kindle FreeTime Kid-Proof Cases and more than $100,000 in educational apps to 60 schools in Allegheny County. “The opportunity to positively impact so many students in Allegheny County makes this our most important educational program to date,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Penguins Foundation. “By providing these free tablets, we believe we can help teachers stimulate the learning process — not only enhancing students’ interest in reading and math but also helping to develop critical thinking, writing and communication skills.” One of the schools benefitting from the new program is Avalon Elementary School in the Northgate School District. On March 13, 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation launched the program from the school in Miss O’Donnell’s fifth grade classroom. The students showed how they are benefiting from the apps on the devices and how they will be used in their day-to-day class work. For more information about Tablets in Education, visit pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com.

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! Six new rinks have been built toKIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE date, with four more coming by the end of 2014. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began this $2.25 million project in the summer of 2012 in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2015, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks. The goal of this project is to introduce children to the game of hockey at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. If you are interested in donating to the Project Power Play program or for more information, visit pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com. 143

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 11th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regularseason games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…

In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.

The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.

And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164

teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168

167

continued from page 167

PLAYOFFS

Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in Cranberry in the summer of 2015, will feature two sheets of ice and serve as the Penguins’ official practice rink — but, as Penguins CEO David Morehouse said, “it will be much more than a hockey rink.” The complex will be the first medical facility in the country to focus specifically on hockey-relating training, rehab and injury prevention. “It will be a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility right here in Cranberry,” Morehouse said. UPMC will build the 180,000 square foot facility at an estimated cost of $70 million. The complex will offer expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy, imaging and sports-performance training. “The facility that we are planning here will comprise almost 50,000 square feet of clinical space for world-class orthopaedic and therapy programs,” said Liz Condordia, UPMC executive vice president. continued on page 173

During all Penguins home games, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation hosts a 50/50 RAFFLE. From the raffle, one lucky fan will go home with 50% of the night’s collection. The remainder of the proceeds will be distributed to local 501c3 charities through a grant process. This past February, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented local 501c3 charities with grants from the proceeds of the 50/50 RAFFLE. These charities represent the Penguins Foundation’s vision, mission, values, and goals. Throughout the 2013-14 Penguins hockey season, the Foundation is dispersing the grants in two phases. The first phase consisted of over 25 grants to local charities with donations totaling in excess of $250,000. The next phase of grants will be distributed at the end of the Penguins season. For more information and the grant application, visit pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org. Find mobile ticket sellers in green aprons on any concourse or stop by one of our six 50/50 kiosks for your chance to win BIG! Tickets are sold from the time the gates open until the end of the second intermission. The winner is randomly selected and announced during the third period.

2013.14 PENGUINS

REGULAR SEASON RECAP BY: ADDISON SMITH

Here is a look back at your 2013-14 Pittsburgh Penguins: METROPOLITAN DIVISION DOMINANCE

In the first year of the NHL’s realignment plan, the Pittsburgh Penguins did just fine. In fact, they absolutely dominated the new Metropolitan Division — leading the second-place team by doubledigit points in the standings the majority of the season. The eight-team division consisted of Pittsburgh, the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Washington Capitals, the New Jersey Devils and the Carolina Hurricanes. While the seeding in spots 2-8 changed throughout the year, one thing remained the same, and that was the Penguins cemented firmly at the top of the division. TRADE DEADLINE

When the Penguins lost Pascal Dupuis for the rest of the season to a torn ACL on Dec. 23, general manager Ray Shero thought it would be almost impossible to trade for somebody that could fill in on the right wing of the first line with Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz. But it ended up working out for the Penguins, as Lee Stempniak did a fantastic job of slotting in there after being acquired from Calgary at the trade deadline for a third-round draft pick. It only took a few games for Stempniak to start gelling with his new linemates, and he said that his comfort level with Crosby and Kunitz kept growing throughout the season. continued on page 191

“I think we’re just trying to skate and not pass up shots when you have them,” Stempniak said of his approach to playing on that line. “[Crosby] is so dynamic, he opens LEE STEMPNIAK up a lot. [Kunitz] has a great shot and it’s a pretty dangerous line with those two guys. For me it’s trying to fit in and skate and keep up, and make sure I’m retrieving pucks and then getting open areas.” Pittsburgh also acquired center Marcel Goc from the Florida Panthers for a 2014 fifth-round MARCEL GOC draft pick and a 2015 third-round draft pick at the trade deadline. He suffered a foot injury on March 27 vs. Los Angeles and was given a three-week timetable for recovery. OLYMPIC BREAK

The NHL took a two-and-a-half week break in the middle of February for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Seven players represented their countries in the games, while Ray Shero, Dan Bylsma, Tony Granato and Andy Saucier were all part of Team USA’s Olympic staff. When it was all over, four Penguins returned to the Steel City with medals around their necks. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby — who also served in that capacity for Team Canada for the first time in his career — and linemate Chris Kunitz won gold, while Team Finland players Jussi Jokinen and Olli Maatta returned with bronze. Defensemen Paul Martin and Brooks Orpik played for Team USA, while Evgeni Malkin represented host Russia.

INJURIES

This season, the Penguins still managed to clinch the Metropolitan Division with injuries to key defensemen and forwards. In total, the Penguins suffered 529 man-games lost, including lengthy absences for goalie Tomas Vokoun (blood clot), Pascal Dupuis (ACL/MCL tears), Kris Letang (stroke) and Paul Martin (leg and hand). Yet even with these injuries, the Penguins kept marching on, showing the depth of the organization. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton call ups Brian Gibbons, Jayson Megna, Philip Samuelsson, Brian Dumoulin, Zach Sill and Adam Payerl all made their NHL debuts. They were joined by other Wilkes-Barre call ups Simon Despres, Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, Andrew Ebbett, Chris Conner, Nick Drazenovic and Harry Zolnierczyk. At one point this season, the Penguins were without all top-4 defensemen at the same time with Letang, Martin, Brooks Orpik and Rob Scuderi all out with different injuries. The Penguins also lost center Evgeni Malkin for the last 11 games of the regular season with a foot injury. One of the more devastating injuries for the team came on Dec. 23 against Ottawa when Dupuis left the game with a torn ACL/ MCL. He missed the rest of the regular season and most likely the entire postseason. The Penguins also had another scare when it was reported that Letang had a stroke. He missed 10 weeks and returned on April 9 against Detroit at home to a roaring round of applause from the fans at CONSOL Energy Center. continued on page 195

The only Penguin to play in all 82 games was forward Craig Adams. Defenseman Matt Niskanen, forward Brandon Sutter and forward Jussi Jokinen only missed one game each. Captain Sidney Crosby missed two. CROSBY WINS ART ROSS

Captain Sidney Crosby won the NHL regular-season scoring race with 104 points (36G-68A) in 80 games played. He finished 17 points ahead of second place finisher Ryan Getzlaf (87 points — 31G-56A). Crosby reached the 100-point mark for the fifth time in his career, the first since the 2009-10 season when he had 109 points (51G-58A). Though, when asked about it, he didn’t seem fazed. “It’s a number, it’s nice,” Crosby said. “I don’t think you go into seasons thinking about that. It’s nice when you get the opportunity to do it.” Centering the top line, he still found ways to produce when his usual right wing Pascal Dupuis was out with an ACL/MCL tear. He saw Beau Bennett, Lee Stempniak, Gibbons, Sutter and more at right wing. James Neal even joined the top line, if only for a fleeting moment. Crosby is the leading candidate to win his second-career Hart Trophy as NHL MVP. He recorded 30 multipoint games, including 13 games of three or more points, and accounted for 43 percent of the Penguins’ scoring — the highest mark in the NHL. The Penguins were 25-2-3 when Crosby scored a goal and 47-8-5 when he recorded a point. continued on page 196

OUTDOOR HOCKEY

The Penguins participated in their third outdoor game when they took on the Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field as part of the NHL’s Stadium Series on March 1. Though the Penguins lost the contest, 5-1, the scene of the two teams playing through the falling snow — in a snow globe — in one of the NFL’s legendary venues gave a lasting image of the event. The Penguins participated in the inaugural Winter Classic in Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Stadium in 2008 and hosted the Washington Capitals at Heinz Field in 2011. HOME DOMINANCE

This season, the Penguins managed to win their 100th game at CONSOL Energy Center on April 9 against the Detroit Red Wings. It was the quickest any team in the NHL has won 100 home games since the beginning of the 2010 season, when the new arena first opened to the public. The Penguins won 28 games at home, including a 13-game home winning streak from Nov. 15, 2013 with a win against the Nashville Predators to Jan. 15, 2014 when the Penguins beat the Washington Capitals. The Penguins winning streak was snapped by the Florida Panthers on Jan. 20 when they beat the Penguins 5-1. 196

GAME SEVEN

SUPERLATIVES BY: MIKE PRISUTA

There’s nothing quite like a Game Seven. There’s nothing quite like the roller-coaster ride on the way to either finality or immortality. There’s nothing quite like a Game Seven. Following is a personal recollection and assessment of the Penguins’ participation over the years in hockey’s greatest spectacle: MOST PAINFUL

April 26, 1975 • Islanders 1, Penguins 0: A franchise still fighting to attain relevance sunk to a new low when Ed Westfall’s goal at the Civic Arena completed an Islanders’ comeback from a three-games-to-none deficit. The Pens joined the 1942 Detroit Red Wings as the only teams to blow such a lead in a best-of-seven series. MOST FRUSTRATING

April 29, 1989 • Flyers 4, Penguins 1: Philadelphia goaltender Ron Hextall came up injured and unavailable but the Penguins, on the verge of the franchise’s first NHL Final Four appearance, wound up being befuddled at home by Flyers backup Ken Wregget. continued on page 201

MOST SATISFYING

April 15, 1991 • Penguins 4, Devils 0: Penguins backup goaltender Frank Pietrangelo, relieving injured starter Tom Barrasso, followed up “The Save” in Game Six in New Jersey with a shutout at home in Game Seven. Finally, a Game Seven memory worth savoring for the Penguins. MOST IMPROBABLE

May 1, 1992 • Penguins 3, Capitals 1: The Penguins entered the postseason as the defending Stanley Cup champions but quickly fell into a three-gamesto-one hole against the Caps, a deficit that appeared all but insurmountable following a 7-2 loss at home in Game Four. From there the Penguins not only forced a Game Seven, they won it on the road. MOST DAMAGING

May 14, 1993 • Islanders 4, Penguins 3 (OT): The Penguins thought they were on their way to a third consecutive Stanley Cup. Instead, the Islanders stopped them in their tracks in the second round. MOST UNIMAGINABLE

May 18, 1995 • Penguins 3, Capitals 0: It wasn’t the Game Seven that resonated in this series, but the Penguins’ 6-5 overtime triumph in Game Five that helped get them to a Game Seven in the first place. That was achieved on a rush deep into the Capitals’ end by stay-at-home defenseman Francois Leroux, one that set up Ron Francis for the gamewinning goal. “I never dare to do that,” Leroux admitted. Leroux’s unprecedented dash inspired another comeback from a three-games-to-one deficit against the Caps. MOST CONFOUNDING

June 1, 1996 • Panthers 3, Penguins 1: Rats! The Panthers denied the Penguins a trip to the franchise’s third Stanley Cup Final by winning the final two games of the series. Florida did it with plastic rat-throwing fans at home and with suffocating defense at home and on the road. “That’s the best defense I ever played against,” Mario Lemieux acknowledged. “There was just no room out there. If you beat one guy there were two more guys in your face.” continued on page 203

MOST INSPIRING

May 4, 1999 • Penguins 4, Devils 2: After scoring late in regulation to send Game Six into overtime and then again in the extra session to force Game Seven, Jaromir Jagr once again overcame a groin injury that limited his mobility and ice time and produced a pair of assists in the series-clinching victory. MOST SURPRISING

May 10, 2001 • Penguins 3, Sabres 2 (OT): The series-winning goal was scored by defenseman Darius Kasparaitis against goaltender Dominik Hasek. On the list of whosaw-that-coming events in Penguins’ postseason annals, that ranks just below Leroux doing anything in the offensive end when it really mattered. MOST PREDICTABLE

May 13, 2009 • Penguins 6, Capitals 2: After two previous Game Seven victories against Washington this one seemed almost inevitable, especially after Marc-Andre Fleury stopped Alex Ovechkin on an early breakaway. MOST REWARDING

June 12, 2009 • Penguins 2, Red Wings 1: They gave the Penguins the Stanley Cup after this one. It doesn’t get any better than that. MOST DISAPPOINTING

May 12, 2010 • Canadiens 5, Penguins 2: The Penguins’ third attempt at a Cup defense ended in ugly fashion at home, with Sidney Crosby taking a penalty in the game’s opening seconds and with Fleury getting yanked. MOST HUMBLING

April 27, 2011 • Lightning 1, Penguins 0: The Penguins didn’t have Crosby or Evgeni Malkin available but were still able to build a three-games-to-one lead. Then they collapsed and scored just four goals over the final three games, losing two at home and three in succession on the way to the golf course.

PENGUINS PROFILE:

ROBERT BORTUZZO BY: MARK MADDEN

At the end of the Penguins’ first-round playoff series against Columbus, Robert Bortuzzo was unbeaten, untied and unscored upon. Called into the lineup when Brooks Orpik got hurt, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound defenseman helped the Penguins close out the series with victories in Games Five and Six. Not bad for Bortuzzo’s first-ever Stanley Cup playoff action. Bortuzzo did OK once the Penguins and New York Rangers started second-round action, too. The Penguins won two of the first three games and while Bortuzzo was on the ice for the Rangers’ overtime winner in Game One, he hit Sidney Crosby with a breakaway pass and Crosby scored what proved to be the game-winner in Game Three. In short, Bortuzzo looked very much at ease in the cauldron of the post-season. “[My nerves] were pretty high,” said Bortuzzo when asked about making his playoff debut. “I knew the series was 2-2. “But I talked with some veteran guys like Rob Scuderi, and to some of the coaches. I was obviously excited. I didn’t get too much sleep during the pre-game nap that day. I was happy to jump in there and contribute to a couple wins. continued on page 218

“It was a bit of an adjustment the first couple shifts, but once you settle in, it’s just hockey. You’ve been doing it all year. I got told before the game, ‘Don’t treat things too differently. This is what you prepare for.’ ” Now Bortuzzo has built some confidence: “I feel good. I feel confident in my ability to be out there and contribute. It seems like I’ve gained some of the coaching staff’s confidence. "[Scuds and I] are able to do some good things. We’re not trying to do anything too flashy. Just keep the puck out of our net, make some hard plays and play with some of the abrasiveness that playoff hockey brings.” Bortuzzo, as noted, paired with Scuderi once he entered the lineup.

“We’re keeping it simple,” Bortuzzo said. “But at the same time, we’re confident in our puckhandling ability. We both put great emphasis on making the first pass. We’ve got high-end skill up front. If we get them the biscuit as quick as we can, that’s where we're going to be successful.” Bortuzzo has height and reach, more than any other Penguins defenseman. “There’s a lot of high-end skill with all the teams in the playoffs,” Bortuzzo said. “If I can use some of my size and physicality and abrasiveness, that’s what I’m going to go. Be physical and a little bit nasty if I can. I feel like I can adjust to playoff hockey nicely.” Bortuzzo also has a sharp tongue that he enjoys using to needle foes. “I don’t mind doing a little bit of yapping,” Bortuzzo said. “It’s part of my game. It’s been in the game for a long time, and it isn’t going anywhere. It’s something I don’t mind doing. “I try to keep the banter above the belt. Mostly hockey — [you’re] soft or whatever. I’m a spur of the moment kind of guy.” Bortuzzo played 54 games during the regular season, dishing 10 assists. He had one assist and was plus-2 in his first five playoff games. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

AROUND THE NHL BY: MIKE PRISUTA

RARE BLUELINE CONTRIBUTION: P.K. Subban’s gamewinning goal in the second overtime of Game One of the second-round series between Boston and Montreal was the first by a Canadiens defenseman in a multi-overtime game since April 25, 1997 (Patrice Brisebois in the third OT against New Jersey). Subban and Brisebois are the only defensemen in Canadiens’ history to pull off such a goal. No NHL defenseman had done that prior to Subban’s effort since Kevin Bieksa of Vancouver in double overtime of Game Five of the 2011 Western Conference Final against San Jose (the seriesdeciding goal).

KANE IS ABLE: The Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane took the ice for Game Three of Chicago’s second-round series against Minnesota on Tuesday night tied for 10th among U.S.born players all-time and first among active U.S. players with 34 career postseason goals. Kane was also 15th all-time and first among his active countrymen with 79 career playoff points.

At the time Kane ranked first in the NHL overall since the start of the 2009 postseason with 34 goals, third with 77 points and fifth with 45 assists.

JUMPING RIGHT IN: Kings center Tyler Toffoli finished tied for first among rookies with five gamewinning goals in the regular season and then added two more in the Kings’ historic rally from a three-games-to-none deficit on the way to a sevengame decision of San Jose in Round One. L.A. advanced to meet Anaheim in Round Two, which set up the first all-Southern California postseason showdown in the four major North American sports (NHL, NFL, MLB, and NBA).

WILD ABOUT ICE TIME: Minnesota defenseman Ryan Suter logged an average of 29:17 TOI/game during the Wild’s first eight postseason games, more than any other skater that played for a Minnesota opponent. Suter was third in the NHL overall in that category.
