AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta
SHOOTOUT STAR: Blackhawks RW Patrick Kane’s game-deciding shootout goal in Chicago’s opener against Dallas was the 15th of his career, which tied Kane for the lead among active players.
A FIRST FOR THE FIRST: Sabres C Zemgus Girgensons became the first player in franchise history to score the first goal of the season in consecutive seasons when he found the net in Buffalo’s 3-1 opening-night loss against Columbus. Girgensons was one of 10 Sabres dressed who had also been in uniform for the 2013-14 opener. Buffalo started this season with just six holdovers from the 2012-13 opener — C Tyler Ennis, G Jhonas Enroth, LW Marcus Foligno, C Cody Hodgson, D Tyler Myers and RW Drew Stafford.
DON’T FALL BEHIND: Boston took the ice on Oct. 11 against Washington with a record of 133-7-6 in the last 146 games during which the Bruins had achieved a two-goal lead. The Bruins were 81-1-1 in the last 83 games that had seen them establish a three-goal lead.
DEPENDABLE D: Capitals D Karl Alzner and John Carlson both appeared in all 82 games last season and extended streaks that were approaching 300 consecutive games played when they suited up for this season’s opener (297 for Carlson, 295 for Alzner).
FINALLY: Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist’s win at St. Louis in New York’s 2014-15 opener was his 310th career win and his first over the Blues. Lundqvist became the third goaltender in Rangers history to start at least nine consecutive season-opening games, joining Ed Giacomin (11, 1965-66 to 1975-76) and Gump Worsley (nine, 1954-55 to 1962-63). Lundqvist began the 2014-15 campaign leading all goaltenders since his entry into the NHL in 2005-06 (minimum 200 appearances) in appearances (575), wins (310), goals-against average (2.26) and shutouts (50).
.500 FOR OPENERS: Columbus’ 3-1 victory on Oct. 9 at Buffalo upped the Blue jackets’ all-time record in regular-season openers to 6-6-1-1.

THE
PROCESS By: Mike Prisuta
The Penguins were understandably happy to get off It’s a process. to a fast start this season, but not It’s not going so overjoyed that they weren’t able to keep their season-opening to happen victories over Anaheim and at right away. Toronto in the proper perspective Mike Johnston Getting the desired results initially was encouraging But the Penguins’ transition into becoming the type of team new head coach Mike Johnston wants them to be and one that consistently plays the way Johnston wants them to play is going to take a little time, especially on the ice in game settings and game situations “It’s a process,” Johnston assessed “It’s not going to happen right away ” continued on page 24

The early-season goals, thus, will be twofold: • Getting as many points as possible, as always. • And getting a more firm grasp on the details of their collective game while pursuing those points. For example … “If you want to be a puck-possession team then you have to weed out the poor decisions and start to make sure guys know what to do when they’re confronted and they don’t have to make a play through people,” Johnston explained. The expectation along those lines is that as a better understanding gradually occurs, the Penguins will in turn be able to cut down on the giveaways they were able to work around against the Ducks (eight) and Maple Leafs (11). The Penguins won both of their first two games comfortably (6-4 over the Ducks and 5-2 over the Maple Leafs). But committing more giveaways than their opponent on a nightly basis (Anaheim had five and Toronto seven) is not what they’re after. The need to clean that type of thing up at the outset of the season is neither an unanticipated development nor one the Penguins are especially worried about being able to get corrected. “When you’re getting pressure, just knowing where everyone’s going to be, executing kind of through that, I think that’s just going to take time,” captain Sidney Crosby observed. “We’ve worked on knowing where we need to be and making sure we support the puck. continued on page 26

“I think we still Our checklist is still fairly have a ways to go to long. We’re really just starting improve but I think to try to lay the framework for we played with a lot of speed [in the early all our systems play and more going], and that’s the importantly the details within way we want to play that framework. And we possessed Mike Johnston the puck a lot, generated a lot of shots ” The special teams, especially the penalty-killing units, represented another area that was perceived to be “a work in progress,” Johnston said, as the season commenced The Penguins allowed opposing power plays to convert at a 50-percent clip for openers (Anaheim went 3-for-6 and Toronto 2-for-4) “The first three or four weeks, unless you’ve had the same unit, you’ve had the same coaches from the year before then you have to get in sync,” Johnston said “It takes a series of eight to 10 games before you get your special teams in sync ” Working out such kinks into the regular season is necessary due to the turnover on the staff and on the roster and because the Penguins had “a little bit of a disjointed training camp,” Johnston said, due to all of the injuries they were forced to work around “Our checklist is still fairly long,” he acknowledged on the morning of Game No 2 against Toronto “We’re really just starting to try to lay the framework for all our systems play and more importantly the details within that framework ” Working through that process and still being able to win hockey games at the outset is a positive So is the manner in which the Penguins have gone about their business “The players, the group that we have in Pittsburgh, the systems that they can play, their work ethic and their focus, I really like the group,” Johnston said Center Nick Spaling also expressed little doubt that things would come together as the Penguins intend eventually In the meantime, their potential and chemistry remain intriguing “It’s an exciting team,” Spaling said “I think we have a lot of good players in here, it’ll be special ” Added defenseman Kris Letang: “We have a good group of guys We’ve seen it at training camp All the new additions are pretty good guys I think we have a great group ”

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

And because we bring innovative coatings and glass products to CONSOL Energy Center, we’re proud to be a part of every game. To see what other winning color formulas we’re bringing to the surface, visit ppg.com.

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2014-15 season, an estimated 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. Eligible students have access to purchase these tickets through an exclusive, day of game, online pre-sale. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text also includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several games have been designated special Student Rush nights. For these games, at least 500 tickets will be available online! For more information on the American Eagle Student Rush program, the terms and conditions and a schedule of special Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush. Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”
said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. For more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

HOCKEY IS FOR
EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.
SAM LAFFERTY
Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.
JADEN LINDO
Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. PENGUINS PROFILE
BRANDON
SUTTER By: Mark Madden
When Jordan Staal left Pittsburgh, he was tired of being a thirdline center. His replacement, Brandon Sutter, also has ambitions beyond that. “Everyone wants more opportunity and more of a role,” said Sutter, 25. “But with most teams in the [NHL], the top three lines play pretty similar minutes, with the exception of a couple of guys. As long as you’re in the mix somewhere, it’s a matter of the coach finding what mix he likes.” The Penguins’ 2014-15 season opened with Sutter being a big part of a very interesting mix. Evgeni Malkin missed all but the very end of training camp because of injury. Coach Mike Johnston decided to ease Malkin into the lineup at right wing instead of Malkin’s usual center position. Sutter thus started the campaign centering Malkin and Pascal Dupuis on the Penguins’ second line. He spent much of last year’s playoffs in a similar role, skating between now-departed James Neal and Jussi Jokinen when then-coach Dan Bylsma chose to unite Malkin and Sidney Crosby on a super-charged top line. When opportunity knocked, Sutter answered. He had five goals and two assists in 13 playoff games last spring, going plus-7. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound center began this season on fire, scoring in each of the Penguins’ first two games while posting a plus-4. His third-period short-handed goal sealed the deal in the Penguins’ opener, a 6-4 decision over Anaheim on Oct. 9 at CONSOL Energy Center. continued on page 162

“It all depends on what team you’re on,” Sutter said. “Lots of guys in this league might be first-line centers with one team, but third-line centers with another team. You don’t worry about it too much. You just go out and play.” Sutter does feel like he started building momentum in last season’s playoffs. “There was just more of an opportunity there once my minutes went up and I started playing a bit more,” said the native of Red Deer, Alberta. “I had a chance to skate with Neal and Jokinen, and that opened up opportunities offensively. I didn’t really change a whole lot. It was just a matter of scoring a couple extra goals here and there.” Sutter noted that feel doesn’t always translate into results: “It’s funny. Some games you’ll feel really good, but at the end of the game you don’t feel like you did much. Other games, you don’t have the energy. You don’t have the jump. But you end up scoring a couple goals. It’s funny how it works out. But you want to make sure you have that energy. That you’re excited to play.” No one is sure how long Malkin will stay at right wing. But, as long as Malkin is on his line, Sutter will get him the puck. “I think right now Geno is more concerned about getting back and getting healthy, feeling good. I’m sure he’ll be just fine,” Sutter said. “He obviously wants [the puck] and he’s pretty creative with it, too. He’s one of those guys that has a knack with the puck, and he has a way of getting open. For me and Duper, if we have a chance to get him the puck, we’ve got to do it. He can definitely control the pace of the game with his skill. “You just try to play your game. Do what you do.” Sutter says that the center’s job hasn’t changed much under Johnston. “There are little things that are different,” said Sutter. “On faceoffs, and when you’re in the defensive zone. “But once you’re in the offensive zone and start playing, there really isn’t any positional play. It’s more like F1, F2, F3 — whoever’s there first, and whoever’s there last. You kind of go from there. “In the neutral zone, you have some more responsibility with holding your lane a bit. But there aren’t many things that are much different. But I think we’re going to be relied upon a lot to have that speed up the middle of the ice.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

NEXT STEP: Lafferty began his freshman season for Brown University of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) this fall. LOCAL PRODUCT: Grew up in Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is about an hour and 45 minutes outside of Pittsburgh. He played youth hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL), grew up rooting for the Penguins and his favorite player was Sidney Crosby. 2013-14 SEASON: Lafferty had a career-best 21 goals, 34 assists and 55 points in 25 games with Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass. He was named to the 2014 Prep School All-New England team. NUMBERS NEVER LIE: In three seasons with Deerfield Academy, Lafferty tallied 38 goals and 57 assists for a total of 95 points in 74 contests. LAFFERTY ON HIS FIRST AND FAVORITE MOMENTS AS A PENGUINS FAN AND HIS FAVORITE PLAYERS: “Starting out just watching the Penguins in the playoffs when I was a little kid, and then when they won the Cup in ’09 was pretty huge for this area. Growing up in Pittsburgh, I think everybody is a huge Sidney Crosby fan. He’s definitely someone I really look up to and admire. But I’d say someone I try and model my game after on the team now is a guy like Brandon Sutter. Just kind of a good, complete, two-way player who’s responsible but also very skilled. He’s someone that I look up to as well.”

SIDNEY CROSBY NAMED NHL
THIRD STAR OF THE WEEK Pittsburgh Penguins
Crosby is the first player to post three or more points in each of the Penguins first two games since Mario Lemieux, Jarmoir Jagr and Ron Francis all did so to start off the 1995-96 season.
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was named NHL Third Star of the Week on October 13. Crosby finished opening week with three goals, three assists and six points in two games, as the Penguins began the year with a pair of wins. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Crosby became the first Penguins player to have three points in each of the team’s first two games since Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Ron Francis all did so in 1995-96. On October 9, Crosby scored twice and added an assist in Pittsburgh’s 6-4 defeat of Anaheim in the debut of Penguins head coach Mike Johnston. That marked the first time Crosby tallied twice on opening night and the third-straight home opener he has scored in. Saturday, October 11 in Toronto, Crosby scored once and had two helpers in Pittsburgh’s 5-2 win against the Maple Leafs.

For the first time in a few years, German countrymen Christian Ehrhoff, Marcel Goc and Thomas Greiss are back on the same team here in Pittsburgh. All three players were originally drafted by San Jose: Goc was taken in the first round (20th overall) back in 2001 while Ehrhoff was selected in the fourth round (106th overall) that same year, and Greiss was taken in the third round (94th overall) in 2004. Ehrhoff and Goc were teammates on the Sharks from 2005-09, while Greiss joined them for three games during the 2007-08 season after being called up from San Jose’s American Hockey League affiliate. However, the three men knew of each other long before they all arrived in California. Goc became close friends with Ehrhoff when they were teenagers playing for the German junior national team in the late 1990s, while Goc’s younger brother, Nikolai, played with Greiss — also on the junior national team — a few years later. “[Greiss] played with my younger brother for the junior national team, so I always knew about him, but I never knew him personally,” Goc said. “I think he’s a good guy to have on your team. He’s a quiet guy, but he has his funny moments. Then [Ehrhoff] and I have played with each other since were 13, 14 years old. “We played together on the junior national teams and we all three played together in San Jose for a while. Then we split ways and we found our way back together here in Pittsburgh.” Goc and Ehrhoff have maintained a close relationship throughout their careers, even after they went their separate ways before the 2009-10 season. Even their spouses have become good friends thanks to their comradery off the ice. “We crossed our roads for quite a bit,” Ehrhoff said. “On our journey we got drafted in the same year by San Jose and played together for a while before he went to Nashville and I went off to Vancouver. We are pretty good friends and our wives get along really well too. It’s nice to be together with him again.” While in San Jose, Goc and Ehrhoff played a combined 565 games with the Sharks. Ehrhoff was eventually traded to the Canucks in the summer of 2009, while Goc signed as a free agent with the Predators that year — putting their professional relationship on hiatus. Five years later, Goc was the first of the three to throw on a black and gold uniform when Pittsburgh acquired the veteran forward from Florida at the trade deadline in March. Greiss headed to the ‘Burgh a few months later when they signed with the Penguins as free agents this past offseason, which meant the trio had officially been reunited. However, with Greiss, 28, being a few years younger than Goc, 31, and Ehrhoff, 32, the trio hasn’t played very many NHL games together despite being in the same organization for quite some time. Now it seems they may have the chance to play together a lot more this year since Greiss was named the Penguins’ backup goaltender for the 2014-15 season. Greiss likes the fact that he can speak his native language with his fellow countrymen. “It’s just nice to have a couple Germans around speaking your home language,” Greiss said. “We have common ground, so it’s nice to have someone from the same culture here too.” Goc agrees with Greiss that it is always a good time when someone who shares the same upbringing gets to play with you out on the ice. “We became friends here over the course of our careers,” Goc said. “I think it’s always fun when you meet a countryman. We don’t have too many Germans that are playing over here.” Also, it shouldn’t be overlooked that there is also another German-born Penguin within the organization. That player is Tom Kuhnhackl, a 22-year-old winger from Landshut, Germany. Kuhnhackl is currently playing for the Penguins’ AHL team, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, but Goc is hoping for a quartet of German countrymen to be together in the NHL soon. “We have another one here in the organization with Tom Kuhnhackl,” Goc said. “Hopefully he’s going to be able join us here one day.”
It’s just nice to have a couple Germans around speaking your home language. We have common ground, so it’s nice to have someone from the same culture here too. Marcel Goc

PENGUINS HOST 27TH ANNUAL
SUMMER STICKS By: Joey Sykes
When the temperatures begin to descend in midSeptember, it means two things: hockey and the Summer Sticks Golf Classic presented by Reed Smith. The Pittsburgh Penguins’ 27th Annual Summer Sticks Golf Classic kicked off on September 16 at the Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley Township for a day filled with excitement and learning opportunities. New Penguins head coach Mike Johnston was impressed at the way his first Summer Sticks experience played out. “I think these types of events are great for the organization,” Johnston said. “We get to support a charity and get to interact with some of our corporate sponsors and it’s a fun day. I know talking to the guys and talking to our staff that has done it before, they really enjoyed it.” The charity the Penguins organization is supporting is the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, which helps provide young people in the area with values and life skills through youth hockey and other interests. The event funds the Penguins Foundation’s scholarship programs. continued on page 190

Summer acquisition Patric Hornqvist is thankful for the invitation because it has allowed him to get acquainted with his new teammates and coaches. “It’s a good time to get to know each other,” Hornqvist said. “And if you play with one guy, you can always get a little closer to him. That’s what golf is all about. You get to know each other and have some fun out there too.” Players and staff were treated to breakfast in the morning before hitting the course at noon in a shotgun start to the tournament. That meant each group of three or four golfers teed off at a different hole at the same time. For Penguins defenseman Simon Despres, he may not be the next Arnold Palmer, but he was still going to make sure he could still have fun out on the green. “It’s really a nice golf course,” Despres said. “I love golfing. I’m not really good at it, but I’m working on it. I’m excited about it. We get to see the coaches, the other It’s a good time to get players and talk to people.” to know each other. RULES CHANGES nhl.com
RULE 1.8
RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.
RULE 23
GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.
RULE 24
PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.
RULE 38
VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198
197

referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.
RULE 57 TRIPPING
The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)
RULE 76 FACE-OFFS
To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.
RULE 64
DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME
* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.
RULE 85
PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.
RULE 1.9
RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
