SHOOTOUT STAR: Blackhawks RW Patrick Kane’s game-deciding shootout goal in Chicago’s opener against Dallas was the 15th of his career, which tied Kane for the lead among active players.

A FIRST FOR THE FIRST: Sabres C Zemgus Girgensons became the first player in franchise history to score the first goal of the season in consecutive seasons when he found the net in Buffalo’s 3-1 opening-night loss against Columbus. Girgensons was one of 10 Sabres dressed who had also been in uniform for the 2013-14 opener. Buffalo started this season with just six holdovers from the 2012-13 opener — C Tyler Ennis, G Jhonas Enroth, LW Marcus Foligno, C Cody Hodgson, D Tyler Myers and RW Drew Stafford.

DON’T FALL BEHIND: Boston took the ice on Oct. 11 against Washington with a record of 133-7-6 in the last 146 games during which the Bruins had achieved a two-goal lead. The Bruins were 81-1-1 in the last 83 games that had seen them establish a three-goal lead.

DEPENDABLE D: Capitals D Karl Alzner and John Carlson both appeared in all 82 games last season and extended streaks that were approaching 300 consecutive games played when they suited up for this season’s opener (297 for Carlson, 295 for Alzner).

FINALLY: Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist’s win at St. Louis in New York’s 2014-15 opener was his 310th career win and his first over the Blues. Lundqvist became the third goaltender in Rangers history to start at least nine consecutive season-opening games, joining Ed Giacomin (11, 1965-66 to 1975-76) and Gump Worsley (nine, 1954-55 to 1962-63). Lundqvist began the 2014-15 campaign leading all goaltenders since his entry into the NHL in 2005-06 (minimum 200 appearances) in appearances (575), wins (310), goals-against average (2.26) and shutouts (50).

The Penguins have lost four straight games to the Flyers (0-3-1), their longest such streak against Philadelphia since dropping seven in a row Feb. 18-Dec. 22, 1985. . . Pittsburgh had won five of the previous six games against the Flyers prior to this streak. . . Philadelphia is 9-1-1 here at CONSOL Energy Center in the regular season, the only regulation loss coming on April 7, 2012 (2-4). The Flyers have won three straight here. . . The Penguins were understandably happy to get off It’s a process. to a fast start this season, but not It’s not going so overjoyed that they weren’t able to keep their season-opening to happen victories over Anaheim and at right away. The early-season goals, thus, will be twofold: • Getting as many points as possible, as always. • And getting a more firm grasp on the details of their collective game while pursuing those points. For example … “If you want to be a puck-possession team then you have to weed out the poor decisions and start to make sure guys know what to do when they’re confronted and they don’t have to make a play through people,” Johnston explained. The expectation along those lines is that as a better understanding gradually occurs, the Penguins will in turn be able to cut down on the giveaways they were able to work around against the Ducks (eight) and Maple Leafs (11). The Penguins won both of their first two games comfortably (6-4 over the Ducks and 5-2 over the Maple Leafs). But committing more giveaways than their opponent on a nightly basis (Anaheim had five and Toronto seven) is not what they’re after. Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. Jim Rutherford is in his first season as the Penguins GM after being hired on June 6, 2014. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 20 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) ‘Executive of the Year’, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) ‘Executive of the Year’ in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. JASON BOTTERILL ASSOCIATE GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his first season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WBS Penguins have made the playoffs all five years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final (2013 and ‘14). Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 38, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minorleague games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. During the ’94 and ’95 WJCs, Botterill was coached by current Penguins head coach Mike Johnston. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

TOM FITZGERALD ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Tom Fitzgerald is in his first season as assistant general manager after spending the previous five seasons as the Penguins assistant to the GM from 2009-14. Fitzgerald’s duties include monitoring Penguins’ prospects playing in college, junior hockey, Europe and with the club’s American Hockey League affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Additionally, he advises GM Jim Rutherford on all personnel decisions. Fitzgerald was named interim assistant coach of the Penguins on Feb. 15, 2009 and helped the club win its third Stanley Cup championship four months later. He began his executive career as the Penguins player development coach in 2007-08. Drafted in the first round (17th overall) by the New York Islanders in the 1986 NHL Draft, Fitzgerald played 17 seasons in the NHL, appearing in 1,097 career games where he recorded 329 career points (139G-190A). He has represented his country nationally three times — once with Team USA at the 1987 World Junior Championship and twice in the World Championships (1989, ’91).

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his first season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

MIKE JOHNSTON HEAD COACH

Mike Johnston is in his first season as head coach of the Penguins after being named to his position on June 25, 2014. Johnson had spent the past six years as the general manager/head coach of the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 2008-13, where he helped turn Portland into a Canadian Hockey League powerhouse and perennial contender. Under Johnston’s guidance, Portland made four straight WHL Championship berths (2010-14), winning the WHL championship and earning a Memorial Cup berth in 2012-13. During that time his team won four straight conference championships. Johnston’s teams are known for their offensive prowess — during his six seasons with Portland, his team’s goals for total rose each year from 176 in 2008-09 to a league-leading 338 in ‘13-14. Johnston also served two NHL stints as assistant/associate coach of the Vancouver Canucks (1999-06) and associate coach of the Los Angeles Kings (2006-08). With Johnston’s help, Vancouver made four straight trips to the postseason and won the Northwest Division crown in 2003-04. He has represented his country multiple times internationally, including serving as assistant coach of Canada’s 1998 Olympic Team. As an assistant/associate coach for Team Canada, he has won five medals (2 gold; 2 silver; 1 bronze) at the World Championships and two gold medals at the World Junior Championships. Among the players he has coached with Canada are Jonathan Toews, Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz, Martin Brodeur, Jarome Iginla, Rob Blake and Martin St. Louis. Johnston has authored three books with former NHL player Ryan Walter: “Simply the Best: Insights and Strategies from Great Hockey Coaches”, “Simply the Best: Players on Performance” and “Hockey Plays and Strategies”. He played college hockey at Brandon University in Manitoba and Acadia University in Nova Scotia and has a Master’s Degree in coaching science from Acadia University. RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his first season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The 4-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

GARY AGNEW ASSISTANT COACH

Gary Agnew is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Penguins. Prior to joining Pittsburgh, Agnew was an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues for two seasons from 2012-14, helping the Blues win the fifth-most games in the NHL during that span (81). Agnew spent four years as an assistant coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2006-10, where he helped the Blue Jackets earn a postseason berth for the first time in franchise history in 2008-09. As head coach of the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch from 2000-06, Agnew won a franchise-record 220 games, and he led Syracuse to its first-ever division title in 2001-02. He also has 14 years of coaching experience in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), including 11 as a head coach. He has won over 350 career OHL games with London (1989-94, ‘97-00), Kingston (1994-97) and Oshawa (2011-12). Agnew was named OHL Coach of the Year twice — in 1993 and ’98. MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his second season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury won 39 games in 2013-14 and tied his career high by recording five shutouts. Bales was also key to Jeff Zatkoff’s development in his first NHL season where he posted a 12-6-2 record, 2.61 GAA and .912 save percentage. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. TRAVIS WILLIAMS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Travis Williams is in his fourth season as Chief Operating Officer of the Penguins, overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations while reporting directly to CEO/President David Morehouse. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/General Counsel and oversaw the construction and development of CONSOL Energy Center — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He is the organization’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities and works closely with AEG on all arena-related events and initiatives. In recent years, CONSOL Energy Center has hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Second and Third Rounds, the 2012 NHL Draft, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four and the 2014 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Williams also is the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. David Peart is in his fifth full season as Senior Vice President of Sales and Service, overseeing all local revenue generating departments for the team including business partnerships, corporate sales, premium seating, ticket sales, broadcasting, and concession and merchandise sales strategy. Under his direction, the Penguins created the team’s Founding Partner Program at CONSOL Energy Center and launched one of the most comprehensive fan engagement initiatives in sports. In 2014, Peart was awarded the InStadium Experience Innovation Award presented by Sports and Entertainment Alliance in Technology for his work with the Penguins’ PensPoints loyalty program. Peart has held senior-level positions with the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. The Kennedy Township native is a graduate of Point Park University, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees. He and his wife, Julie, have two children.

POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark will KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE have completed five more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-ofits-kind Project Power Play program enters its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Renzie Park in McKeesport, Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin in Oakdale, North Park in Allison Park and Bloomfield Park in Pittsburgh. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. One more rink will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

Steve Kolbe enters his second season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kolbe spent 14 seasons (1997-2011) as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Washington Capitals, broadcasting over 1100 games. His voice has been heard internationally on the NHL Network, XM Radio, NHL Radio, and ESPN. Kolbe broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 and the NHL Winter Classic in 2011, and he was featured on the NHL Network’s documentary Voices in 2008. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Kolbe has over 25 years of broadcasting experience, and most recently has been a co-host of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) as well as talk show host for Major League Baseball coverage and NHL insider on CBS Radio 105.7 in Baltimore. Kolbe is a 1989 graduate of Michigan State University and earned a B.A. in telecommunications.

BEGINS 2014-15 SEASON The 2014-15 season is underway for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite hockey teams. The organization has been practicing since early August as well as participating in various weekend tournaments and showcases since the beginning of September. The Penguins Elite compete at the AAA level and feature (9) nine boys teams and (5) five girls teams competing at various age divisions. The kickoff to the season began over Labor Day Weekend when the Penguins Elite hosted 26 teams for their annual Icebreaker tournament presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. The weekend featured games at both Robert Morris and CONSOL Energy Center. As of September 29, 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite have (8) eight teams ranked in the top 25 for their respective age divisions. Of those eight, five are ranked in the top 10 in country, including the U12 girls’ team which ranked number one in the country. The teams include the following: Midget Minor, Bantam Minor, Pee Wee Major, Pee Wee Minor, Squirt Major, U19 girls, U16 girls and the U12 Girls. All rankings are according to MyHockeyRankings.com. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Midget and Bantam (boys) and U19, U16, and U14 (girls) aged teams compete in the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League, which is known as the nation’s premier amateur hockey league, featuring 20 organizations from across the country. The younger teams play under an independent schedule in which they organize and schedule their opponents in various tournaments through the fall and winter. FREE GAME FOR KIDS On Saturday, September 27th the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted their annual Free Game for Kids against the Columbus Blue Jackets. This game provides the opportunity to distribute 18,190 tickets to various youth hockey teams and other various organizations around the area. As one of the most exciting events of the year, the CONSOL Energy Center was packed with young and old fans alike to support the Penguins in their efforts to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-0. The Penguins reserved 13,818 tickets for local amateur hockey organizations and programs. These groups include the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL), Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, Little Penguins participants (2013-14 alumni), local dek/inline hockey rinks and even providing tickets for military families who are involved with Defending the Blue Line. These groups wore their individual team hockey jerseys and helped to fill CONSOL Energy Center. From the puck drop to the final whistle, the home team was serenaded with cheers and applauds from the very enthusiastic groups that helped create the wonderful game-day atmosphere during the pre-season game. The Pittsburgh Penguins look forward to continuing this tradition into future seasons.

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. HOCKEY IS FOR

EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. Now in its third season, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite is one of the country’s premier youth hockey organizations. A joint effort of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and corporate partner DICK’S Sporting Goods, Penguins Elite offers a comprehensive program for player development and includes 14 teams in various age group — nine boys’ teams and five girls’ teams. The program features an outstanding coaching staff, professional management, world-class training facilities and access to elite-level competition — along with proven academic and career guidance.

In 2014-15, Penguins Elite boys’ teams will range from Squirt Minor through Midget Major, including a U15 team. Girls teams will be offered at 19&U, 16&U, 14&U, 12&U and 10&U age groups. The funding provided by DICK’S Sporting Goods and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has reduced player participation fees by nearly 35% annually. In addition, DICK’S Sporting Goods provides FREE game jerseys and socks, practice jerseys and socks, pant shells, warmups and equipment bags to players each season. Players and parents also receive discounts on equipment and team-branded apparel purchased through DICK’S Sporting Goods. The NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins provide unique opportunities for PPE players, including practicing at CONSOL Energy Center, participating in the Icebreaker and NHL Youth Cup Tournaments and having the opportunity to attend select games and special events. Many are programs affiliated with NHL teams, including the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets, Dallas Junior Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. With significant visibility, top-level talent, and elite coaching, the Tier 1 Elite League provides young, talented players with the opportunity to advance their careers to Tier 1 Jr. Hockey, U.S. National Teams, NCAA hockey, the NHL and other professional leagues. Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.

When Jordan Staal left Pittsburgh, he was tired of being a thirdline center. His replacement, Brandon Sutter, also has ambitions beyond that. “Everyone wants more opportunity and more of a role,” said Sutter, 25. “But with most teams in the [NHL], the top three lines play pretty similar minutes, with the exception of a couple of guys. As long as you’re in the mix somewhere, it’s a matter of the coach finding what mix he likes.” The Penguins’ 2014-15 season opened with Sutter being a big part of a very interesting mix. Evgeni Malkin missed all but the very end of training camp because of injury. Coach Mike Johnston decided to ease Malkin into the lineup at right wing instead of Malkin’s usual center position. Sutter thus started the campaign centering Malkin and Pascal Dupuis on the Penguins’ second line. He spent much of last year’s playoffs in a similar role, skating between now-departed James Neal and Jussi Jokinen when then-coach Dan Bylsma chose to unite Malkin and Sidney Crosby on a super-charged top line. When opportunity knocked, Sutter answered. He had five goals and two assists in 13 playoff games last spring, going plus-7. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound center began this season on fire, scoring in each of the Penguins’ first two games while posting a plus-4. His third-period short-handed goal sealed the deal in the Penguins’ opener, a 6-4 decision over Anaheim on Oct. 9 at CONSOL Energy Center. continued on page 162

“It all depends on what team you’re on,” Sutter said. “Lots of guys in this league might be first-line centers with one team, but third-line centers with another team. You don’t worry about it too much. You just go out and play.” Sutter does feel like he started building momentum in last season’s playoffs. “There was just more of an opportunity there once my minutes went up and I started playing a bit more,” said the native of Red Deer, Alberta. “I had a chance to skate with Neal and Jokinen, and that opened up opportunities offensively. I didn’t really change a whole lot. It was just a matter of scoring a couple extra goals here and there.” Sutter noted that feel doesn’t always translate into results: “It’s funny. Some games you’ll feel really good, but at the end of the game you don’t feel like you did much. Other games, you don’t have the energy. You don’t have the jump. But you end up scoring a couple goals. It’s funny how it works out. But you want to make sure you have that energy. That you’re excited to play.” No one is sure how long Malkin will stay at right wing. But, as long as Malkin is on his line, Sutter will get him the puck. “I think right now Geno is more concerned about getting back and getting healthy, feeling good. I’m sure he’ll be just fine,” Sutter said. “He obviously wants [the puck] and he’s pretty creative with it, too. He’s one of those guys that has a knack with the puck, and he has a way of getting open. For me and Duper, if we have a chance to get him the puck, we’ve got to do it. He can definitely control the pace of the game with his skill. “You just try to play your game. Do what you do.” Sutter says that the center’s job hasn’t changed much under Johnston. “There are little things that are different,” said Sutter. “On faceoffs, and when you’re in the defensive zone. “But once you’re in the offensive zone and start playing, there really isn’t any positional play. It’s more like F1, F2, F3 — whoever’s there first, and whoever’s there last. You kind of go from there. “In the neutral zone, you have some more responsibility with holding your lane a bit. But there aren’t many things that are much different. He played youth hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL), grew up rooting for the Penguins and his favorite player was Sidney Crosby. 2013-14 SEASON: Lafferty had a career-best 21 goals, 34 assists and 55 points in 25 games with Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass. Crosby is the first player to post three or more points in each of the Penguins first two games since Mario Lemieux, Jarmoir Jagr and Ron Francis all did so to start off the 1995-96 season.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was named NHL Third Star of the Week on October 13. Crosby finished opening week with three goals, three assists and six points in two games, as the Penguins began the year with a pair of wins. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Crosby became the first Penguins player to have three points in each of the team’s first two games since Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Ron Francis all did so in 1995-96. On October 9, Crosby scored twice and added an assist in Pittsburgh’s 6-4 defeat of Anaheim in the debut of Penguins head coach Mike Johnston. That marked the first time Crosby tallied twice on opening night and the third-straight home opener he has scored in. Saturday, October 11 in Toronto, Crosby scored once and had two helpers in Pittsburgh’s 5-2 win against the Maple Leafs.

GERMAN TRIO REUNITED IN PITTSBURGH By: Joey Sykes

For the first time in a few years, German countrymen Christian Ehrhoff, Marcel Goc and Thomas Greiss are back on the same team here in Pittsburgh. All three players were originally drafted by San Jose: Goc was taken in the first round (20th overall) back in 2001 while Ehrhoff was selected in the fourth round (106th overall) that same year, and Greiss was taken in the third round (94th overall) in 2004. Ehrhoff and Goc were teammates on the Sharks from 2005-09, while Greiss joined them for three games during the 2007-08 season after being called up from San Jose’s American Hockey League affiliate. However, the three men knew of each other long before they all arrived in California. Goc became close friends with Ehrhoff when they were teenagers playing for the German junior national team in the late 1990s, while Goc’s younger brother, Nikolai, played with Greiss — also on the junior national team — a few years later. “[Greiss] played with my younger brother for the junior national team, so I always knew about him, but I never knew him personally,” Goc said. “I think he’s a good guy to have on your team. He’s a quiet guy, but he has his funny moments. Then [Ehrhoff] and I have played with each other since were 13, 14 years old. “We played together on the junior national teams and we all three played together in San Jose for a while. Then we split ways and we found our way back together here in Pittsburgh.” Goc and Ehrhoff have maintained a close relationship throughout their careers, even after they went their separate ways before the 2009-10 season. Even their spouses have become good friends thanks to their comradery off the ice. “We crossed our roads for quite a bit,” Ehrhoff said. “On our journey we got drafted in the same year by San Jose and played together for a while before he went to Nashville and I went off to Vancouver. We are pretty good friends and our wives get along really well too. It’s nice to be together with him again.” While in San Jose, Goc and Ehrhoff played a combined 565 games with the Sharks. Ehrhoff was eventually traded to the Canucks in the summer of 2009, while Goc signed as a free agent with the Predators that year — putting their professional relationship on hiatus. Five years later, Goc was the first of the three to throw on a black and gold uniform when Pittsburgh acquired the veteran forward from Florida at the trade deadline in March. Greiss headed to the ‘Burgh a few months later when they signed with the Penguins as free agents this past offseason, which meant the trio had officially been reunited. However, with Greiss, 28, being a few years younger than Goc, 31, and Ehrhoff, 32, the trio hasn’t played very many NHL games together despite being in the same organization for quite some time. Now it seems they may have the chance to play together a lot more this year since Greiss was named the Penguins’ backup goaltender for the 2014-15 season. Greiss likes the fact that he can speak his native language with his fellow countrymen. “It’s just nice to have a couple Germans around speaking your home language,” Greiss said. “We have common ground, so it’s nice to have someone from the same culture here too.” Goc agrees with Greiss that it is always a good time when someone who shares the same upbringing gets to play with you out on the ice. “We became friends here over the course of our careers,” Goc said. “I think it’s always fun when you meet a countryman. We don’t have too many Germans that are playing over here.” Also, it shouldn’t be overlooked that there is also another German-born Penguin within the organization. That player is Tom Kuhnhackl, a 22-year-old winger from Landshut, Germany. Kuhnhackl is currently playing for the Penguins’ AHL team, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, but Goc is hoping for a quartet of German countrymen to be together in the NHL soon. “We have another one here in the organization with Tom Kuhnhackl,” Goc said. “Hopefully he’s going to be able join us here one day.”

When the temperatures begin to descend in midSeptember, it means two things: hockey and the Summer Sticks Golf Classic presented by Reed Smith. The Pittsburgh Penguins’ 27th Annual Summer Sticks Golf Classic kicked off on September 16 at the Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley Township for a day filled with excitement and learning opportunities. New Penguins head coach Mike Johnston was impressed at the way his first Summer Sticks experience played out. “I think these types of events are great for the organization,” Johnston said. “We get to support a charity and get to interact with some of our corporate sponsors and it’s a fun day. I know talking to the guys and talking to our staff that has done it before, they really enjoyed it.” The charity the Penguins organization is supporting is the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, which helps provide young people in the area with values and life skills through youth hockey and other interests. The event funds the Penguins Foundation’s scholarship programs. continued on page 190

Summer acquisition Patric Hornqvist is thankful for the invitation because it has allowed him to get acquainted with his new teammates and coaches. “It’s a good time to get to know each other,” Hornqvist said. “And if you play with one guy, you can always get a little closer to him. That’s what golf is all about. You get to know each other and have some fun out there too.” Players and staff were treated to breakfast in the morning before hitting the course at noon in a shotgun start to the tournament. That meant each group of three or four golfers teed off at a different hole at the same time. For Penguins defenseman Simon Despres, he may not be the next Arnold Palmer, but he was still going to make sure he could still have fun out on the green. “It’s really a nice golf course,” Despres said. “I love golfing. GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.

RULE 24

PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.

RULE 38

VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198

referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.

RULE 57 TRIPPING

The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)

RULE 76 FACE-OFFS

To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.

RULE 64

DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. * Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.

RULE 85

PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. For Pittsburgh Penguins games, all alcohol sales within the arena will conclude at the beginning of the third period. Individual concerts and events are determined on a show-by-show basis.

ATM MACHINES For the convenience of our fans, ATMs are available in CONSOL Energy Center: First Niagara Bank - Outside section 119 and 230, and in the lobby of the Trib Total Media Gate PNC Bank on PNC Legends Level - Outside of party suite 44 and suite 13

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

AUTOMOTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AAA will have a “Puck Truck” at all Penguins home games. The “Puck Truck” is available to assist patrons that have trouble with their vehicles in CONSOL Energy Center lots only. Fans can call 1.800.AAA.HELP after the start of the third period.

BABY CHANGING STATIONS Baby changing stations are available in all restrooms, located on all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center.

In return for safe and sober transportation of their group from CONSOL Energy Center, the designated driver will receive a coupon redeemable for a complimentary soft drink during the game.

DOORS OPEN Doors generally open one (1) hour prior to the start of an event at CONSOL Energy Center, including Pittsburgh Penguins games. Please check the individual event page for further information. CONSOL Energy Center has a no re-entry policy; once you leave the building during an event, you will not be permitted to return.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) UPMC First Aid Stations, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. UPMC First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats.
