SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT
ART RODRIGUEZ
Hometown: Valencia, PA (originally Monongahela) Season Ticket Location: 114, X, 3-4 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 2005-06
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? I attended my first Pens game in 1972 with my junior high English teacher, John Barbero. I fell in love with the sport on that night. Those next few years, I watched the televised games on a snowy TV and fell asleep to Apps and Pronovost on a transistor radio. Later in life, my three kids loved not only the sport, but the character of the team. I was lucky enough to introduce them to John before a game at the arena a few years before he passed. I bought season tickets the next year. WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? It’s always a family dispute! I attend with one of my three kids or my wife. With all kids in college now, they all get the games during their college breaks. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CURRENT PITTSBURGH PENGUINS PLAYER? They are all my boys, but Pascal is a great person.
5
HAVE YOU EVER ATTENDED A PENGUINS AWAY GAME? Chicago Blackhawks in February 2009. I took my daughter Carly that year for her 16th birthday.
Art and his wife, Kathy, at a Penguins home game.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO WEAR OR BRING TO A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? Our game jerseys, of course, and our hearts… we all truly love the team. DO YOU PLAY HOCKEY? DO YOU HAVE CHILDREN OR GRANDCHILDREN THAT PLAY HOCKEY? My son played for the Butler Valley Bulldogs from Mite on up until High School graduation! As a kid in the Mon Valley in the sixties and early seventies, we were just street hockey players with a bunch of pavement scuffed pucks! AS A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PROMOTIONAL GIVEAWAY AND/OR EVENT? We truly come for the game, the competition, but we did love and still wear the caps and headband, especially the navy blue Pens cap. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? Player profiles, for sure. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE STORIES OR EXPERIENCES SINCE BECOMING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? Yes… I was with my wife in NYC to celebrate our 20th anniversary and the Pens were playing the Rangers at the Garden. I overpaid a guy on the street for two tickets, which unfortunately were counterfeit! We went to dinner and watched on TV!

DEFENSE
EXCELLING By: Mike Prisuta
They’re still the high-flying, high-octane Pittsburgh Penguins, but if the early indications this season are an accurate barometer the Pens are also much more than just that. “Teams see Pittsburgh as an offensive team,” head coach Mike Johnston observed. “But if you look at our record lately we’ve had one goal [against], we’ve had three of four shutouts. “We’re starting to play really well defensively.” The seven-game winning streak the Penguins brought to Madison Square Garden for a Tuesday night showdown with the Rangers was as much about defense as anything else. Those goals-against totals Johnston had referenced were attention-getting indications of the Penguins’ developing two-way play capability. They shut out Nashville on Oct. 25 (3-0). They allowed three goals to the Devils on Oct. 28 (an 8-3 victory). They blanked the Kings (3-0 on Oct. 30) and the Sabres (5-0 on Nov. 1) in succession. continued on page 24

They allowed just one goal on Nov 4 at Minnesota (a 4-1 win) and again on Nov 8 at Buffalo (a 6-1 triumph) In between those two games the Pens surrendered three goals in a 4-3 shootout victory on Nov 6 at Winnipeg That made for eight goals against in the winning streak that had reached seven games prior to engaging the Rangers on Tuesday night “With our team it’s a matter of everybody playing and taking responsibility for their own zone, everybody coming back, re-loading above on the forecheck,” Johnston continued while assessing the Penguins’ defensive prowess midway through the winning streak “It’s a couple of those details “I think our guys have been great in just maybe adhering to some different things we’re trying to do and locking down and really buying in But it’s a process, it’s evolving “Certainly our goaltending has been a big part of it, as well ” Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury established a career-long shutout streak of 164:22 during the seven-game winning streak, a run that came within 8:54 of equaling Tomas Vokoun’s franchiserecord total of 173:16. And as a team the Penguins kept opponents scoreless for 205:28 from the Devils game on Oct 28 through the Minnesota game on Nov 4, the second-longest effort in that department in franchise history The Penguins also set a franchise record by not allowing a power-play goal in 10 consecutive games (37-for-37) with their 3-for-3 effort on the penalty kill in the Nov 8 game against the Sabres continued on page 26

Defenseman Rob Scuderi credited the Penguins’ approach in both ends as a factor in their defensive success. Scuderi also looked ahead philosophically to what that might mean in the spring. “We’ve kind of changed maybe the way we went for quick strikes last year, the quick play,” Scuderi said. “This year we’ve been doing a better job of grinding teams down low and trying to create chances out of nothing.” That’s led to more time spent in the offensive zone and less time having to work in the defensive end. “That’s great during the regular season,” Scuderi continued. “It’s even better during the playoffs. “The playoffs are a long way away; I’m not talking about that now. But I think we all understand that’s how you have to play when push comes to shove.” That push-comes-to-shove element of the Penguins’ game was apparent in their 3-0 shutout of the Kings on Oct. 30, a game in which the Penguins were as strong and as resourceful as they needed to be while defending just outside of the crease. “Near the blue paint there was rarely a guy who had an open hack or an open whack after a shot,” Scuderi said. “We did a good job of just pushing them to the outside. “Sometimes you can’t and you just grab a stick.” In terms of playing sound defensive hockey, the Pens have been a team willing to do what’s necessary early on this season. And they’re becoming a team This year we’ve been doing with a better grasp of how it’s supposed a better job of grinding teams to be done. down low and trying to create “Guys are finally chances out of nothing. starting to settle Rob Scuderi in and get an understanding of where they’re supposed to be,” Scuderi said. “We’re executing it well, that’s the difference. “At times there are some breakdowns, they’re going to happen throughout the course of a season. We’re doing a better job kind of trouble-shooting those, who is supposed to help and slide over. Everyone’s doing a good job.”

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. CONSOL Energy Center — now in its fifth year of hosting entertainment for every sort of audience — will present more top tours and banner sporting events in the future. The New Year will bring the Maroon 5 World Tour 2015 and the Second and Third Rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship to CONSOL Energy Center. The Pittsburgh arena’s reputation for hosting major sporting events will continue. The Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Championship will be contested in CONSOL Energy Center in 2017, the A-10 announced in September. Bernadette V. McGlade, A-10 Commissioner, says, “The opportunity to rotate our championship within the A-10 footprint is exciting. She adds that CONSOL Energy Center is a state-of-the-art venue with great fan amenities and a successful history of hosting NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship events. Commenting on the significance of having a facility like CONSOL Energy Center in the community, Craig Davis, President and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH, says: “Pittsburgh is at the top of its game when it comes to sports, and CONSOL has been the linchpin for our success in attracting national events such as USA Gymnastics P&G Championships, NCAA Men’s Frozen Four and NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Combined with Penguins games and the fact that it is a top-performing concert venue in terms of sales, this building and AEG have been invaluable in terms of providing visibility and economic impact to the Pittsburgh region. “ Davis adds, “Sports events are an ever-growing opportunity within the tourism industry. The market segment is 25 percent of our convention sales team’s bookings. Having CONSOL Energy Center is key to the arsenal of facilities we can offer when bidding on large sporting events in our region.” continued on page 76

Home of the to the types of Pittsburgh Penguins and entertainment the Pittsburgh Power, and concerts at CONSOL Energy CONSOL Energy Center Center. has annually hosted the Three Rivers Classic of men’s collegiate hockey, the second annual CCM/ USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in 2013, and the NHL Draft in 2012. In addition to sporting events, well over 300 performances took place at CONSOL Energy Center in its first four Paul McCartney years of operation. Leading the eclectic parade of entertainers performing for CONSOL Energy Center audiences, Paul McCartney, the inaugural act on August 18, 2010, sold out his first show so quickly that a second performance was added for the next night. After winning five Grammy Awards earlier this year, McCartney came back to CONSOL Energy Center in July with his universally acclaimed “Out There” tour and played for another sold-out crowd. In his most recent appearance, McCartney sang and played his way through his ambitious set list and two encores, performing some 40 songs with dedications to his wife, Nancy, his late wife, Linda, the civil rights demonstrators of the ‘60s, his dad and Ringo Starr for their birthdays that coincided with the concert, as well as John Lennon and George Harrison. There is no limit to the types of entertainment and concerts appearing on CONSOL Energy Center stages. Concerts — rock, pop, doo wop, Christian, country and more — have included One Direction, Lady Gaga, Donnie and Marie Osmond, Foo Fighters, Casting Crowns, Katy Perry, Barry Manilow, Black Keys, Carrie Underwood, Drake, the “Justins” — Bieber and Timberlake, Arcade Fire, Wiz Khalifa, Bruno Mars, Usher, Miley Cyrus, Michael Bublé, Andre Rieu, Hillsong United, Josh Groban, TobyMac, New Kids on the Block, Chris Tomlin and Celtic Woman. 6th annual readers’ survey named CONSOL Energy Center the best NHL arena. • It won the National “Hall of Headlines” award from Venues Today magazine. • Its Box Office was nominated for “Box Office of the Year” by the International Ticketing Association. • The Master Builders’ Association (MBA) top prize for Best New Construction in the category over $10 Million was awarded to PJ Dick Incorporated for its role as construction manager on CONSOL Energy Center. • On the environmental front, CONSOL Energy Center was a nominee for the Sustainability Award at the International Business Awards in Barcelona, Spain in 2011. • The building won the Green Power: Turn It On! Award from PennFuture. • CONSOL Energy Center was honored as the most innovative energy efficient glass project in Glass Magazine’s Crystal Achievement Awards. CONSOL Energy Center claims the most comfortable seating arrangement in the NHL — seats up to 24 inches wide, with an accompanying increase in legroom. The center also provides ADA accessibility, family restrooms and guest services locations on all seating levels, as well as 12 escalators — that’s 10 more than at the Civic Arena. In addition to entertainment and sporting events, the arena’s main floor, suites, dining facilities and common areas are used for fundraisers and countless private functions. This year, CONSOL Energy Center hosted the Hillman Cancer Center Gala for the fourth time. It is the venue for the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s annual signature fundraisers -- Skates & Plates and the Wine Tasting Gala. The venue also has hosted the Pens Foundation’s scholarship winners and students attending its Explorer Series, CONSOL Energy’s Community All-Stars recognition programs, and Check Your Heart screenings. All of these activities contribute to making CONSOL Energy Center a busy Elton John place all year round.

The cities of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are both honored to host the second annual NHL Youth Cup December 12-14. The 2014-15 tournament will include one event for each Major birth year (2000, 2002 & 2004) to be hosted by Pittsburgh and one event for each Minor birth year (2001, 2003 & 2005) to be hosted by Philadelphia. The event, presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, will feature AAA youth hockey programs affiliated with the Carolina Hurricanes, Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Nashville Predators, Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. Some of the premiere talent playing at the AAA level will compete again for the start of this wonderful tradition amongst NHL-affiliated hockey programs across North America that will continue to grow from year to year. “We think it was a great opportunity for young players in all six age groups to play in an elite-level tournament with other NHL-affiliated programs so early in the season,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Penguins Elite program, with generous support from the NHL, was proud to host three age groups and welcome them to Pittsburgh.” All games in Pittsburgh will be held at RMU Island Sports Center over the weekend. For more information please visit NHLYouthCup.com. 87
Thanksgiving in Pittsburgh has yet another busy hockey schedule as the Ninth Annual Pittsburgh Girls Thanksgiving Classic will be played November 28th – 30th. A total of 69 teams and approximately 1,200 participants will be here in Pittsburgh to play hockey over the holiday break. Games will consistently be played over the weekend at RMU Island Sports Center, Iceoplex at Soutpointe, BladerunnersWarrendale and Mt. Lebanon. The classic will be played on the Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels, and has age divisions ranging from U10 up to U19s. The reach of this tournament is evident in that 36 of the 69 teams are from Canada. Pittsburgh is quickly becoming a hot bed for hockey and an arena to showcase women’s hockey across the continent. “This annual Thanksgiving Classic is a great opportunity for our Penguins Elite teams to be able to host such a large hockey tournament in Pittsburgh where younger girls get the chance to compete against some of the best in the area”, says Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Director of Operations Kathy Pippy. “Ten years ago there were no girls’ programs in the region, and today, with the support of the Pittsburgh Penguins and DICK’S Sporting Goods we have grown to develop girls’ teams’ U10 up to U19. The future is very bright for girls’ hockey in Pittsburgh!” The Thanksgiving tournament continues to grow from year to year and is becoming a great holiday tradition in our area. It also serves as a great platform to showcase our elite women amateur hockey players in the area.

Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”
said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. HOCKEY IS FOR
EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.
JADEN LINDO
Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.
JEFF TAYLOR
Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. Taylor led all Union rookie blueliners in scoring with 16 points. Beyond the Numbers: Last season Jeff was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team as an 18-year-old true freshman.

PENGUINS PROFILE
MARC-ANDRE
FLEURY By: Mark Madden
For goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, it was the perfect scenario: The Penguins led Stanley Cup champ Los Angeles 3-0 at home Oct. 30. The game was in its final minute. The Kings, on the power play and angling for the impossible, pulled the goalie. The puck came to Fleury. Great chance for an empty-net goal. Absolute minimal risk to the win. A shutout was at stake, but Fleury had 29 previous. He hadn’t scored a goal, though. Fleury still hasn’t. Fleury shanked his shot. The sold-out CONSOL Energy Center gasped in anticipation, but Fleury’s shot dribbled down the rink and wide right. “At some point, I’ll get one,” Fleury said after. “No, you won’t,” came the rejoinder from a member of the media. “Don’t say that!” Fleury replied, laughing. “Someday, it will come.” Uh, probably not. But even though Fleury isn’t great at shooting the puck, he’s great at stopping it. Fleury’s shutout of the Kings was among three he posted in four games. Fleury made 36 saves vs. Los Angeles. On Oct. 25, he made 25 stops to beat host Nashville, 3-0. On Nov. 1, he made 18 saves to blank visiting Buffalo, 5-0. The victory over Buffalo left Fleury with a four-game win streak and seven victories, tied for second-best in the NHL as of Nov. 4. Three shutouts allowed him to share the league lead in that category with Minnesota’s Darcy Kuemper. Fleury’s other numbers also stood strong: 1.89 goals-against average, .931 save percentage. The 29-year-old Quebec native continued on page 163

looked totally at ease while shutting out the Kings, keeping his pads square and personifying consistency. Fleury was at his best in the third period, making 16 saves to preserve the zero. “It was good. We faced a good team, even though they’re missing a few key forwards,” said Fleury, referring to injured Kings catalysts Anze Kopitar and Marian Gaborik. “They’re Stanley Cup champions. So it was a good challenge for us, and we played a solid game.” The Penguins’ penalty-kill was an issue early in the season, as the Penguins allowed six power-play goals on 15 kills during their first three games. But the Penguins’ PK then killed 30 straight over eight games, including four vs. Los Angeles. “The first few games of the season, we had a rough time,” Fleury said about the PK. “Since then, it’s been really good.” Fleury credited much of the Penguins’ penalty-killing success to work done in front of his net. “It’s been good,” said the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Fleury. “When you look around and see a bunch of legs, it’s tough. But the guys have done a good job. “There’s a limit to what they can do. You could just cross-check back in the day. But they’re doing a good job helping me see the puck. Boxing the guy out at the right time. If I can see the puck, my chances are a lot better to stop it.” The Kings certainly got their share of shots: “Shots from everywhere. They got guys at the net and threw pucks there. The guys did a good job clearing rebounds. They’re blocking shots, too. Limiting scoring chances.” Fleury’s teammates did well in front of him. But there was little doubt that the man who contributed most to the shutout was the man who got credit for it. “Marc was really in a zone,” said Penguins Coach Mike Johnston. Fleury’s shutout vs. Buffalo was the 31st of his career. He is the Penguins’ all-time goaltending leader in games played, minutes played, wins and shutouts. Fleury will get ample chance to extend those marks. On Nov. 5, he signed a four-year contract extension with the Penguins, giving up a chance to test free agency this coming off-season. “I’ve spent a lot of time here,” Fleury said after inking the pact. “I’ve been with my teammates for a while. The organization has been great to me. The city and the fans, too. I couldn’t be more happy.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

PENGUINS FRANCHISE
GOALIE HERE TO STAY By: Michelle Crechiolo
Every player remembers their first NHL game, no matter how long ago it was. And Marc-Andre Fleury is no different. His debut is one that would be especially hard to forget. It was Oct. 18, 2003 and the Penguins were hosting Los Angeles for their regular-season opener. Fleury was just an 18-year-old kid, having been drafted first overall by Pittsburgh — who traded up to get him — just a few months earlier. The Quebec native led his team out onto the ice wearing bright yellow pads and gloves and skated into the crease to defend his net. Of all the ways he could have faced his first shot, he probably hadn’t foreseen it would be on a shorthanded breakaway just 38 seconds into the game. “A tough first shot. It was a goal. That was pretty rough,” Fleury said with a laugh. “But I had a penalty shot I stopped, and then I stopped Zigmund Palffy on a breakaway. You watch those guys growing up and then you face them on the ice, it was pretty cool.” Fleury made a total of 48 saves in the game and was named the evening’s No. 1 star for his efforts. The standing-room crowd of 16,986 that packed Mellon Arena, witnessing the No. 1 overall

pick in action for the Seems like I just started first time, showered and now I’m an old guy on the the teenager with team. But it’s good. I think you chants of “FLEURY, FLEURY!” learn stuff from life in general They knew he was and hockey-wise too. It’s pretty something special. fun that I’m still here and I enjoy And he’s proven them right. my time playing goal here. In the years since Marc-Andre Fleury that night, Fleury has firmly established himself as the Penguins’ franchise netminder. He could go down as, if he’s not already considered, the greatest goalie in team history. Now 29 years old (he turns 30 on Nov. 28), Fleury is the Penguins’ longest-tenured player — having played all 10-plus seasons of his NHL career with Pittsburgh. Which is an incredible feat in itself, but especially so in the salary-cap era. “It’s crazy, unbelievable how quick time goes by,” Fleury said. “Seems like I just started and now I’m an old guy on the team. But it’s good. I think you learn stuff from life in general and hockeywise too. It’s pretty fun that I’m still here and I enjoy my time playing goal here.” Fleury backstopped the team to a Stanley Cup championship and two Stanley Cup Final appearances. No other active goaltender has more postseason wins than Fleury’s 52, which are second only to Tom Barrasso (56) in club history while his eight playoff shutouts are a record. Fleury is the Penguins’ all-time regular-season leader in wins (295), games played (540) and shutouts (31). He currently sits five victories shy of becoming just the 31st goalie in NHL history to win 300 games. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, when Fleury does reach 300, he will become one of the youngest goaltenders in league history to hit that milestone. However, out of all his accomplishments (apart from winning the Cup in 2009), Fleury’s fondest memory is that first game. “It’s been my dream since I was a kid, just to play hockey in the NHL,” Fleury said. “And the Penguins made that possible for me, for many years. I’m grateful to them, and hopefully it keeps going for a while.” continued on page 177

And it will, as the team re-signed Fleury to a four-year contract extension on Nov. 5. The deal begins with the 2015-16 season and runs through 2018-19. It has an average annual value of $5.75 million. “It feels great. I’m really happy,” Fleury said. “I’ve spent a lot of time here, it’s like my home. My teammates, I’ve been with them for a while. The organization has been great to me all these years, the city, the fans. I couldn’t be more happy.” And the guys in the locker room couldn’t be happier for their beloved teammate. One of those players is captain Sidney Crosby, who’s had Fleury as his netminder ever since he entered the league back in 2005-06. The two have been seatmates on every team plane ride since then. “As a player and as a teammate, I’ve played with him for a long time and happy that I’m going to be playing with him for a longer period of time,” Crosby smiled. “So it’s nice. Happy that he’s got it done and can kind of move forward.” General manager Jim Rutherford wanted to reach a deal with Fleury sooner rather than later, as the netminder was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season if an extension wasn’t inked by then. “When a player is in the last year of his contract — especially an important player like Marc — you wonder if, when you get closer to the end of the season, if it’s not in the back of his mind,” Rutherford said. “So I think it’s good we’ve got it cleared up.” And now, like Crosby said, Fleury can move forward. “It’s just nice to get it over with and not think about it any more,” Fleury said. “Just go play hockey, try to win some games and just focus on hockey, you know? Nothing else. So it’s nice it’s finally done.”

PENGUINS PARENTS SHARE STORIES
On November 1, the Penguins hosted the parents of Penguins players for their game against the Buffalo Sabres at CONSOL Energy Center. Here are a couple of fun stories from a few of the parents in attendance… BOB SCUDERI, ON SEEING ROB FALL IN LOVE WITH THE GAME OF HOCKEY: “Everybody had a lot of money, but we really didn’t have that much. So when they had to get new pants or a helmet, I would have to spray paint them the color they needed to be rather than buy a new pair. I bought the boys some old-time skates and I figured if they didn’t like them, they wouldn’t play anymore and you know what? They played and they loved the game.” MARVIN KUNITZ, ON CHRIS’ ABILITY TO ENDURE: “One story I remember, we were at a tournament in Saskatoon and I think it was pee-wee hockey. He had been playing soccer earlier in the week and he broke his toe. (His toe) was all swelled up and he couldn’t wear his one skate, so there was a big guy on the team and he wore skates that were at least three sizes too big for him. He wore the right skate on the one side and on the other, where he had the broken toe, he wore the big skate. He played with two different size skates and that was the funniest thing. It just showed his ability to endure.” LORRIE SPALING, ON WHAT NICK WAS LIKE AS A KID: “He was always a shy kid, but he was always good. He never got into any trouble or anything like that. His favorite team was Toronto, of course. And Doug Gilmour was his favorite player, so the funniest thing he ever did was he dressed up as when Doug Gilmour did the cow commercial. He dressed up as a cow with the jersey. He looked cute then. He loves the game, and you know what, as long as you see them doing what they’re happy with, that’s amazing.”

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta
MILESTONES IN BOSTON: The Bruins’ record book has welcomed a couple of additions this season in terms of success and service. Patrice Bergeron registered two assists in a 4-1 win on Oct. 25 at Toronto and became the 13th player to amass 500 or more points in a Boston uniform. Bergeron’s feat came in the wake of Tuukka Rask becoming the 10th goaltender to win 200 or more games in a Boston uniform via a 3-2 shootout win on Oct. 15 at Detroit.
HISTORIC SHOOTOUT: The Devils’ 2-1 shootout victory on Oct. 30 at Winnipeg brought to an end New Jersey’s NHL-record 18-game losing streak in shootouts. The streak ran from March 15, 2013 at Philadelphia through Oct. 24, 2014 against Dallas. The Devils’ most recent shootout victory prior to the streak-snapping triumph had occurred on March 10, 2013 at Winnipeg.
JOHNNY HOCKEY: Calgary’s Johnny Gaudreau got his NHL feet wet late last season and then hit the ice running among his fellow
184
rookies this season. Gaudreau led NHL rookies in assists (nine) and game-winning goals (two) and ranked second in points (12), power-play goals (two) and plus/ minus (plus 9) through his first 15 games in 2014-15.
ALL-TIME START: Anaheim’s Frederik Andersen’s 4-1 victory on Oct. 22 over Buffalo made him the first goaltender in NHL history to win 26 of his first 31 decisions (26-5-0). Andersen went 7-1-1, with a 1.63 goalsagainst average and a .936 save percentage in his first appearances and crafted a career-long streak of 152:46 without allowing a goal.
VANCOUVER’S BEST: The Canucks’ top line of Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin and Radim Vrbata accounted for 42 points (14+28) in their first 15 games this season. The threesome wasn’t shy about shooting the puck in that span. They accounted for 111 of the Canucks’ 457 shots on goal (24.3 percent) through Vancouver’s first 15 games.

PENGUINS TAKE KIDS SHOPPING FOR
PROJECT BUNDLE-UP By: Joey Sykes
Sidney Crosby may be affiliated with the black and gold whenever he hits the ice, but the Penguins captain couldn’t seem to stray away from the pink and purple during his shopping spree with his new friends Olivia and Selena. On Oct. 27, Crosby and the rest of his teammates participated in the eighth annual Project Bundle-Up at the DICK’S Sporting Goods store in Cranberry Township. As part of the annual Penguins Personal Shopping Day, Penguins players were matched with local middle school children selected by The Salvation Army to shop for new winter clothing including coats, hats, gloves and boots. The fun didn’t cease after all the items were paid for. Players also took silly pictures in a photo booth with their charges before sitting down with their new friends to sign autographs and eat candy. Crosby’s task for the day was to find articles of winter gear that were purple for Olivia, 8, and pink for Selena, 6. First came the boots, which probably was the toughest decision of the day for the girls to make, as there was quite a variety. The conundrum was settled as soon as Crosby found each a pair lined with their respective colors. continued on page 190

When it came time to pick out coats, Olivia and Selena knew exactly which ones they wanted after spotting them from across the winter clothing section. However, for Crosby, they seemed to be just a bit out of reach. “You guys just pick the first ones you see, don’t you?” he said jokingly as he struggled to grab the coats from the top rack. The rest of the items came easy to Crosby and the girls, but before they could check out, a stop at the photo booth was in store. Olivia and Serena picked out an oversized pair of sunglasses for him to wear, while they themselves decided to throw on a multicolored scarf as well as their own pair of stylish shades. To Crosby, the experience was successful overall. “I was lucky to have these two shoppers with me and it went pretty good,” he said. “They had all the sizes and the girls knew what colors they liked. They made it pretty easy on me. We enjoy doing it and it’s a lot of fun for us, and I think the kids have fun.”

2014.15 NHL
RULES CHANGES nhl.com
RULE 1.8
RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.
RULE 23
GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.
RULE 24
PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.
RULE 38
VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198
197
continued from page 197
referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.
RULE 57 TRIPPING
The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)
RULE 76 FACE-OFFS
To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.
RULE 64
DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME
* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.
RULE 85
PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.
RULE 1.9
RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
