As a tribute in his memory, I say a prayer to him before each game. WHAT CURRENT PLAYER OR TEAM IS YOUR FAVORITE PENGUINS OPPONENT? Nashville Predators and James Neal. HAVE YOU EVER ATTENDED A PENGUINS AWAY GAME? I went to Buffalo for the first Winter Classic in 2008. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME RITUALS WHEN ATTENDING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? Tonight the Penguins and Minnesota Wild meet for the second and final time this season. Pittsburgh earned a 4-1 win at Minnesota on Nov. 4, as Nick Spaling and Brandon Sutter scored 3:02 apart late in the first period and early in the second to build an early lead before Chris Kunitz and Patric Hornqvist added later goals to complement 33 saves by Thomas Greiss. Rob Scuderi had two assists as the Penguins won for the second time in three trips to St. Paul. . . Pittsburgh has won three of the last four games between the teams. . . Each of the last two Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; losses to the Wild were by shutout, as Ilya Bryzgalov made 20 saves in a 4-0 win at Minnesota last April 5 and Jose Theodore made 26 saves in a 4-0 win here in Pittsburgh on Jan. 8, 2011. . . The Penguins had lost six consecutive home games against the Wild (0-5-1) before winning their last game here against them on Dec. 19, 2013 (5-2). Kunitz had two goals and Olli Maatta scored on a penalty shot as the Penguins built a 4-0 lead in that game. . . Pittsburgh continued on page 10

has scored only seven goals total in its last five home games against Minnesota, being shut out twice in that span. In eight all-time home games against the Wild, the Penguins have scored more than two goals only once — that coming in the aforementioned 5-2 victory. . . Minnesota has missed on 29 straight power play chances against the Penguins since Alexandre Daigle beat Jocelyn Thibault on Dec. 8, 2005 in Pittsburgh in a 5-0 victory, and Wild have converted just one of their last 51 chances against the Penguins. In 16 all-time games against Pittsburgh, Minnesota is 2-for-60 (3.3 percent). . . The Penguins have scored first in four of the last six games against the Wild. . . Minnesota coach Mike Yeo was an assistant here in Pittsburgh when the Penguins won the 2009 Stanley Cup, and Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher was the Penguins’ assistant GM at that time.

This is the last in a series of three games the Penguins play in a 12-day stretch. They played in Montreal last Saturday and do not play again until Friday on the road against the New York Islanders. Their next game here is Sunday afternoon against the New York Rangers. . . Left winger David Perron, acquired from Edmonton on Jan. 2, scored a goal in his first game with the Penguins, a 4-1 home loss to Montreal on Jan. 3. Perron, a three-time 20-goal scorer in the NHL, joined Kunitz, Hornqvist, Blake Comeau, Pascal Dupuis, Derrick Pouliot and Evgeni Malkin among current Penguins who scored in their first game for the team . . . Tonight’s game opens the second half of the 2014-15 schedule for the Penguins, who were 24-10-5 and fifth in the NHL’s overall standings after the loss to the Canadiens. . . Although the circumstances that conspired to force Brian Dumoulin, Scott Harrington and Derrick Pouliot into the lineup weren’t ideal, the experience has proved beneficial for the Penguins and for their young defensemen. It proved to be a learning experience for the inexperienced players and for the Penguins. The information learned/confirmed by the team during the process included the following: • THE VETERAN DEFENSEMEN ARE WILLING LEADERS.

“Having the veteran players sprinkled through that group [of defensemen], especially Rob [Scuderi] and [Kris] Letang has been very important,” head coach Mike Johnston observed prior to the Penguins’ 3-0 loss to the Capitals on Dec. 27. “Any time you’re adding some young guys that haven’t had a lot of NHL experience it’s great to have that veteran influence. “You have Letang there and you have Scuderi that have been able to help the guys and they’re really good. They’re good on the bench. They’re good in meetings where we just have the group of defensemen alone, just in a video session. Having veteran comments is very helpful and Scuderi and Letang are very good. [Paul] Martin is really good at that, too.” continued on page 24

• SIMON DESPRES IS CAPABLE OF GROWING UP IN A HURRY.

“Despres is almost a veteran guy right now,” Johnston observed in advance of a 4-3 shootout loss on Dec. 22 at Florida. “It’s funny to talk about him as a veteran guy because coming into the season he didn’t have a lot of games. Now, he’s looked on as more of a veteran influence back there.” • ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS AN ABSOLUTE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE LINEUP INCLUDES A GREAT DEAL OF YOUTHFUL INEXPERIENCE, AND CAN BENEFIT EVERYONE.

“There’s a big emphasis with our forwards to really focus on their play away from the puck and help out our defense,” Johnston said after the Penguins beat the Panthers, 3-1, on Dec. 20 at CONSOL Energy Center. “The other area [of emphasis] is on breakouts, to make sure our centers are available for our defense, [that] they’re protecting them, [that] they’re in good position, because if you have your center in the middle of the ice most of the time your defensemen are protected. It’s when your center gets wide and gets out of position that your defense gets exposed a little bit. “That protection, that coverage, we’ve talked about it. We’ve worked a lot on our coverage the first couple months of the season and its getting better and better. That helps the defenseman play if he knows there’s some protection if he makes a mistake down low.” • LETANG HAS A PHYSICAL SKILL SET THAT CAN COMPENSATE FOR A LACK OF EXPERIENCE ON THE BLUELINE.

“After watching 15 to 20 games in the summer and really watching him closely [since the season started], he’s the type of player that you want to build a team around because he continued on page 26

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. Jim Rutherford is in his first season as the Penguins GM after being hired on June 6, 2014. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 20 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) ‘Executive of the Year’, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) ‘Executive of the Year’ in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships. JASON BOTTERILL ASSOCIATE GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his first season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WBS Penguins have made the playoffs all five years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final (2013 and ‘14). Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 38, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minorleague games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. During the ’94 and ’95 WJCs, Botterill was coached by current Penguins head coach Mike Johnston. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

TOM FITZGERALD ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Tom Fitzgerald is in his first season as assistant general manager after spending the previous five seasons as the Penguins assistant to the GM from 2009-14. Fitzgerald’s duties include monitoring Penguins’ prospects playing in college, junior hockey, Europe and with the club’s American Hockey League affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Additionally, he advises GM Jim Rutherford on all personnel decisions. Fitzgerald was named interim assistant coach of the Penguins on Feb. 15, 2009 and helped the club win its third Stanley Cup championship four months later. He began his executive career as the Penguins player development coach in 2007-08. Drafted in the first round (17th overall) by the New York Islanders in the 1986 NHL Draft, Fitzgerald played 17 seasons in the NHL, appearing in 1,097 career games where he recorded 329 career points (139G-190A). He has represented his country nationally three times — once with Team USA at the 1987 World Junior Championship and twice in the World Championships (1989, ’91).

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his first season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

Jason Karmanos is in his first season as the vice president of hockey operations after being named to his current position on June 12, 2014. Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. MIKE JOHNSTON HEAD COACH

Mike Johnston is in his first season as head coach of the Penguins after being named to his position on June 25, 2014. Johnson had spent the past six years as the general manager/head coach of the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 2008-13, where he helped turn Portland into a Canadian Hockey League powerhouse and perennial contender. Under Johnston’s guidance, Portland made four straight WHL Championship berths (2010-14), winning the WHL championship and earning a Memorial Cup berth in 2012-13. During that time his team won four straight conference championships. Johnston’s teams are known for their offensive prowess — during his six seasons with Portland, his team’s goals for total rose each year from 176 in 2008-09 to a league-leading 338 in ‘13-14. Johnston also served two NHL stints as assistant/associate coach of the Vancouver Canucks (1999-06) and associate coach of the Los Angeles Kings (2006-08). With Johnston’s help, Vancouver made four straight trips to the postseason and won the Northwest Division crown in 2003-04. He has represented his country multiple times internationally, including serving as assistant coach of Canada’s 1998 Olympic Team. As an assistant/associate coach for Team Canada, he has won five medals (2 gold; 2 silver; 1 bronze) at the World Championships and two gold medals at the World Junior Championships. Among the players he has coached with Canada are Jonathan Toews, Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz, Martin Brodeur, Jarome Iginla, Rob Blake and Martin St. Louis. Johnston has authored three books with former NHL player Ryan Walter: “Simply the Best: Insights and Strategies from Great Hockey Coaches”, “Simply the Best: Players on Performance” and “Hockey Plays and Strategies”. He played college hockey at Brandon University in Manitoba and Acadia University in Nova Scotia and has a Master’s Degree in coaching science from Acadia University. RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his first season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The 4-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

GARY AGNEW ASSISTANT COACH

Gary Agnew is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Penguins. Prior to joining Pittsburgh, Agnew was an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues for two seasons from 2012-14, helping the Blues win the fifth-most games in the NHL during that span (81). Agnew spent four years as an assistant coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2006-10, where he helped the Blue Jackets earn a postseason berth for the first time in franchise history in 2008-09. As head coach of the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch from 2000-06, Agnew won a franchise-record 220 games, and he led Syracuse to its first-ever division title in 2001-02. He also has 14 years of coaching experience in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), including 11 as a head coach. He has won over 350 career OHL games with London (1989-94, ‘97-00), Kingston (1994-97) and Oshawa (2011-12). Agnew was named OHL Coach of the Year twice — in 1993 and ’98. MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his second season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury won 39 games in 2013-14 and tied his career high by recording five shutouts. Bales was also key to Jeff Zatkoff’s development in his first NHL season where he posted a 12-6-2 record, 2.61 GAA and .912 save percentage. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. TRAVIS WILLIAMS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Travis Williams is in his fourth season as Chief Operating Officer of the Penguins, overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations while reporting directly to CEO/President David Morehouse. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/General Counsel and oversaw the construction and development of CONSOL Energy Center — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He is the organization’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities and works closely with AEG on all arena-related events and initiatives. In recent years, CONSOL Energy Center has hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Second and Third Rounds, the 2012 NHL Draft, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four and the 2014 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Williams also is the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams graduated from Penn State University and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. He lives in Nevillewood with his wife, Nichole, and six children.

DAVID PEART SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, SALES

David Peart is in his fifth full season as Senior Vice President of Sales and Service, overseeing all local revenue generating departments for the team including business partnerships, corporate sales, premium seating, ticket sales, broadcasting, and concession and merchandise sales strategy. Under his direction, the Penguins created the team’s Founding Partner Program at CONSOL Energy Center and launched one of the most comprehensive fan engagement initiatives in sports. In 2014, Peart was awarded the InStadium Experience Innovation Award presented by Sports and Entertainment Alliance in Technology for his work with the Penguins’ PensPoints loyalty program. Peart has held senior-level positions with the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

Steve Kolbe enters his second season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kolbe spent 14 seasons (1997-2011) as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Washington Capitals, broadcasting over 1,100 games. His voice has been heard internationally on the NHL Network, XM Radio, NHL Radio, and ESPN. Kolbe broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 and the NHL Winter Classic in 2011, and he was featured on the NHL Network’s documentary Voices in 2008. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Kolbe has over 25 years of broadcasting experience, and most recently has been a co-host of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) as well as talk show host for Major League Baseball coverage and NHL insider on CBS Radio 105.7 in Baltimore. Kolbe is a 1989 graduate of Michigan State University and earned a B.A. in telecommunications.

CONSOL Energy Center — now in its fifth year of hosting entertainment for every sort of audience — will present more top tours and banner sporting events in the future. The New Year will bring the Maroon 5 World Tour 2015 and the Second and Third Rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship to CONSOL Energy Center. The Pittsburgh arena’s reputation for hosting major sporting events will continue. The Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Championship will be contested in CONSOL Energy Center in 2017, the A-10 announced in September. Bernadette V. McGlade, A-10 Commissioner, says, “The opportunity to rotate our championship within the A-10 footprint is exciting. She adds that CONSOL Energy Center is a state-of-the-art venue with great fan amenities and a successful history of hosting NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship events. Commenting on the significance of having a facility like CONSOL Energy Center in the community, Craig Davis, President and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH, says: “Pittsburgh is at the top of its game when it comes to sports, and CONSOL has been the linchpin for our success in attracting national events such as USA Gymnastics P&G Championships, NCAA Men’s Frozen Four and NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. In his most recent appearance, McCartney sang and played his way through his ambitious set list and two encores, performing some 40 songs with dedications to his wife, Nancy, his late wife, Linda, the civil rights demonstrators of the ‘60s, his dad and Ringo Starr for their birthdays that coincided with the concert, as well as John Lennon and George Harrison. After finishing strong at the second annual NHL Youth Cup Tournament presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, the Penguins Elite proved why they are one of the premier youth hockey organizations not only here in Pittsburgh, but also across the country. The 2004 Penguins Elite grouping stole the show Sunday afternoon at Robert Morris University’s Island Sports Center after dominating their age grouping in the tournament. They beat Philadelphia’s Team Comcast in the finals, 8-2, to take home the championship for the second straight year. Head coach Ray Conway and assistant coach Jeff Hannan backed the team to their victory. “We’re fortunate with what we have in the coaching staff throughout the organization,” Hannan said. “We’re fortunate enough that the parents can afford to do this because it is expensive and it’s a lot of hard work that a lot of people don’t see. “It’s our second year in a row winning it, so we had some new kids this year that got to experience it for the first time, which is really neat.” Rick Boysen, father of Penguins Elite player Ryan Boysen, agrees with Hannan. “The Penguins Elite is a great organization and they develop the kids well, but they remember the fundamentals of having fun continued on page 89

at all levels,” Boysen said. “It’s great for these kids to get together to bond as well and travel around the country.” The NHL Youth Cup featured eight AAA NHLaffiliated youth teams across six age divisions, including the Penguins Elite. Pittsburgh hosted one event for each major birth year (2000, ’02, ’04) for the tournament, while Philadelphia hosted one event from each minor birth year (2001, ’03, ’05). In addition to the Penguins Elite, the tournament played host to Team Comcast, the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, the Mid Fairfield Rangers, the Suffolk P.A.L. Islanders and the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes, as well as the Nashville Jr. Predators and Washington Little Caps, who are new to the event. “It was good,” Hannan said about the tournament. “We put a lot of hard work into it. Bringing in all these NHL clubs was great. It’s good to see the kids’ hard work pay off.” Scott Sroka, whose son Owen plays on the 2004 team, enjoyed seeing his boy have success again in this tournament and attributes their success to the coaching staff. “It’s great,” Sroka said. “We were in Philadelphia last year and we won that year and we won again this year, so it’s a great opportunity to showcase the sport and the elite level teams with the NHL Youth Cup. “The kids worked really hard this year and overcame some great obstacles and won again this year. They worked harder than ever and had great coaching.” The tournament was a big success and entertaining for all involved, and the players and their families even received a special treat after the event concluded. Lord Stanley’s Cup made an appearance in the lobby of the Island’s Sports Center, where people gathered around to snap photos with the Cup and gaze at the names of champions. “That’s really cool for them,” Hannan said. “Especially since a lot of those kids see it on T.V. and have seen the Penguins win it in the past. To see it first hand is really cool for them.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. HOCKEY IS FOR

EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. Now in its third season, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite is one of the country’s premier youth hockey organizations. A joint effort of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and corporate partner DICK’S Sporting Goods, Penguins Elite offers a comprehensive program for player development and includes 14 teams in various age group — nine boys’ teams and five girls’ teams. The program features an outstanding coaching staff, professional management, world-class training facilities and access to elite-level competition — along with proven academic and career guidance.

In 2014-15, Penguins Elite boys’ teams will range from Squirt Minor through Midget Major, including a U15 team. Girls teams will be offered at 19&U, 16&U, 14&U, 12&U and 10&U age groups. The funding provided by DICK’S Sporting Goods and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has reduced player participation fees by nearly 35% annually. In addition, DICK’S Sporting Goods provides FREE game jerseys and socks, practice jerseys and socks, pant shells, warmups and equipment bags to players each season. Players and parents also receive discounts on equipment and team-branded apparel purchased through DICK’S Sporting Goods. The NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins provide unique opportunities for PPE players, including practicing at CONSOL Energy Center, participating in the Icebreaker and NHL Youth Cup Tournaments and having the opportunity to attend select games and special events. Many are programs affiliated with NHL teams, including the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets, Dallas Junior Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. With significant visibility, top-level talent, and elite coaching, the Tier 1 Elite League provides young, talented players with the opportunity to advance their careers to Tier 1 Jr. Hockey, U.S. National Teams, NCAA hockey, the NHL and other professional leagues. Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.

POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

When asked to proclaim his New Year’s resolution, winger Beau Bennett said: “To play 10 games in a row.” If you’ve got a problem, own it. Bennett’s difficulty is staying healthy. As the New Year dawned, various hurts had limited Bennett to just 29 NHL games over the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. His latest knock was a knee injury sustained Nov. 24. While he was recovering from his bum knee, Bennett also caught mumps. Google “Beau Bennett” and “injuries,” and you get 89,000 results in 0.34 seconds. If you didn’t laugh, you’d cry. Bennett is back — as of this writing, anyway — and the winger’s return from the disabled list was one to remember. Bennett logged 17:29 of ice time and assisted both of his team’s goals as the Penguins beat Carolina, 2-1, on New Year’s Eve at CONSOL Energy Center. Both helpers were primary: Bennett’s pass from the right corner found Chris Kunitz at the corresponding dot for a sharp wrist shot with 22 seconds left in the first period. Bennett later knocked a loose puck from the bottom of the left circle to Brandon Sutter in the slot, who buried the game-winner with 1:42 remaining in regulation. continued on page 162

“I’m pretty lucky not to get injured,” Bennett deadpanned after. “I took a couple big hits and felt fine. It was a good game.” There’s no doubting Bennett’s talent. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound California native was selected 20th overall in the 2010 NHL draft. He’s elusive, deceptively strong and has playmaking ability rarely found in wingers. Bennett followed up his comeback game by assisting Christian Ehrhoff’s goal as the host Penguins beat Tampa Bay 6-3 on Jan. 2. That helper gave Bennett a goal and five assists in nine games this season. “I’m trying to look guys off, and try to work that way,” Bennett said of his playmaking acumen. “In this league, guys don’t give you much if you look at the spots you’re going to pass to or shoot at. “I’m trying to out-think the other team. That’s a pretty big part of the game.” Against Carolina and Tampa Bay, Bennett played right wing on a line with Sutter and Kunitz. “I’ve played with Kuny a little bit here and there,” Bennett said. “Me and Brandon have had good chemistry the past couple years. Those guys are real positive, but always on the defensive side of things. We’re always going to be able to get back. “We got a lot of open-ice looks [against Carolina]. In another game, if it had been more physical, I don’t know how it would have been for my first game back. But we created a lot right off the get-go. That’s good for the confidence.” Given Bennett’s injury history, confidence is a valuable commodity. “I was in a bad place mentally after the last injury,” Bennett said. “So I just tried to re-focus, and hone my game off-ice. Get in the gym and try to be ready when I did come back. I felt pretty confident out there.” Setting up Kunitz’ goal against Carolina jump-started Bennett’s comeback. Bennett’s pass was so quick that a reporter later wondered if it was a blind dish. “No, I saw him,” Bennett responded. “[Kunitz is] a pretty easy player. He doesn’t really move too much if he sees you take a look. I know he’s going to stay there. On that play, it was a nice shot by him.” For Bennett, to play is the thing. He’s happy just to be back in uniform. “It’s great,” he enthused. “It’s good to end 2014, and start 2015 on a high note.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

As Sidney Crosby carried the puck into the offensive zone in the first period of Pittsburgh’s game against Montreal on Jan. 3, David Perron drifted into the slot. Crosby proceeded to thread the puck between the sticks of Canadiens forwards Tomas Plekanec and Dale Weise right onto Perron’s blade, who went down on one knee to blast a slapshot into the open net. “That was probably the best pass I’ve ever received,” Perron said. “Over two sticks and I had a good portion of the net to put it in, so it felt good.” Head coach Mike Johnston slotted Perron — who was acquired from Edmonton for Rob Klinkhammer and a 2015 firstround pick on Jan. 2 — on the left wing alongside Crosby in his Penguins debut. “David had good poise with the puck tonight,” Johnston said that evening. “You could see that when the puck hit his stick, he’s got his head up, he’s looking to make a play. He had the quick release shot on the goal, he had a couple other touches and a couple other deflections around the net. So it was a pretty good first night for him. “Just traveling in and all of a sudden jumping in with a new team and playing, I like what he did there.” Perron, who was playing for a team at the bottom of the NHL standings in Edmonton, is thrilled to be with a contender like

And since he’s signed through the 2015-16 season, the forward has a lot of time to fit in with the team. “Obviously the excitement level from going to a team that’s not going to make the playoffs to a team that will certainly make the playoffs and make a run at the Cup is extremely special for me,” Perron said. “As a player, when you’ve played a few years in the league, all you start to worry about is winning hockey games. I’m just trying to come in and do my part and work hard and fit with the team.” General manager Jim Rutherford has been looking for a top-six forward since the beginning of the season. After being in talks with Edmonton for around a month, he decided to make the trade. Rutherford likes Perron’s versatility and his ability to put the puck in the back of the net. “He’s a skilled forward,” Rutherford said. “He’s a guy that when things are going right, he should score between 25 and 30 goals. He can move the puck and he can play both wings. So there’s a lot of options. Especially with the way our forwards are now, Mike will have several options with him.” While Perron can play either side, the right-handed shot prefers the left wing — something he believes he got from his favorite player growing up, former Penguin Alex Kovalev. “I guess that’s the Kovalev in me a little bit,” Perron joked. “I always liked to see him play there and I guess when I went to juniors, they asked me what position I was and I said left wing without even thinking. I didn’t even know if I would play well there or not, but I played there and it went good. But over the last few years I played probably equally right side or left side so whichever coach decides to put me on is fine with me.” continued on page 177

Perron feels that his style of play is going to fit in well with the Penguins system, and it won’t be very difficult to find his place in the locker room either. After being the only French-Canadian in Edmonton’s organization, Perron now has a number of new teammates that speak his native tongue here in Pittsburgh. “Being a French guy, there’s also [Kris] Letang, [Marc-Andre] Fleury, [Pascal] Dupuis and [Simon] Despres so it’s a great opportunity with that,” Perron said. “I haven’t played with a lot of French guys over the years, but overall I’m really, really happy.” There is one other Quebec native in the Penguins organization that Perron initially forgot to mention. No. 66 is someone he can look up to if he has any questions about the organization. “[Mario Lemieux] is obviously the guy that leads the ship there,” Perron said. Starting from the top, he’s the main guy and I think what I’ve noticed from the people I have talked to, all of them say unbelievable stuff about the owner.” From Lemieux to Crosby, Perron knows this organization is unique to any other place he played before. “This kind of an opportunity is pretty surreal,” Perron said. “We all know the type of players this team has and I’m just going to come in and work as hard as I can and fit in any way I can.”

With the Penguins having a practice on New Year’s Day for the first time in a few years, we took advantage of the holiday and asked a few players their resolutions.

• THOMAS GREISS suggested one for fellow goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. “It should be stop cheating at Socom,” Greiss said. “Stop cheating? Who’s cheating?” Fleury asked innocently. “You and ‘Tanger’ [Kris Letang]!” Greiss said. “You always use the cheat codes.” Despite the accusation, Fleury maintained his innocence. “I don’t cheat,” he maintained.

• FLEURY came up with one for himself. “My New Year’s resolution — not that I do it much or often — but stop looking at my phone or texting when driving,” he said.

• Forward BRANDON SUTTER had the same one. “I want to focus on not texting or looking at my phone when driving,” he said. “If I’m driving when I get a text, I just want to completely ignore that, so that’s my resolution.”

• On the flip side, forward JAYSON MEGNA wants to use his phone more to stay in touch with his family and friends. “My New Year’s resolution is to just be better with my phone,” he said. “Just be returning phone calls and text messages in a timely manner. I need to get better at that. I’m pretty bad right now. I’ve got probably 20 voicemails on my phone that I need to listen to.”

• Forward NICK SPALING’S was “Learn the guitar.” He’s had one for five years that’s just been sitting in his house, and while sometimes he’ll pick it up and pretend to play it, “this is my year to really learn it.”

• And finally, winger BEAU BENNETT, who’s had unfortunate luck with injuries since turning pro, said his biggest goal for the new year is playing 10 games in a row. “I just want to play hockey. That’s it.”

ZERO TOLERANCE: San Jose G Antti Niemi earned his 30th career shutout on Dec. 31 at Anaheim (3-0). Niemi trailed only Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers (35) in that department since 2009-10.

POWER OUTAGE: Boston went 19-15-5 through its first 39 games the hard way. The Bruins were the beneficiaries of a league-low 91 power-play opportunities in that span, including two games where they never had a manadvantage, and 20 games in which Boston had two or fewer power-play opportunities. BENEFITS LOCAL STUDENT On December 27, the Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Association awarded its annual scholarship to Bethel Park High School senior, Derek Lesnak. On hand to honor the 2014 Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Association Scholarship winner was Penguins alumnus, Pierre Larouche. The scholarship, valued at $2,000, is determined by a panel of judges from the Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Association. The award is co-sponsored by the NHL Alumni Association. The Alumni scholarship is presented annually to a western Pennsylvania high school senior for demonstrating academic excellence, assisting his or her community, and showing continued on page 190

leadership, sportsmanship and a positive attitude as a member of his or her school’s hockey program. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 to qualify for the scholarship. Derek Lesnak was a defenseman on his varsity hockey team for four years and served as team captain in his junior and senior seasons. As a senior, Lesnak collected 101 points, 29 goals and 72 assists in 61 games. A two-time PIHL AAA All-Star in 2013 (defense) and 2014 (offense), Derek led his team to victory at the 2014 Toyota-USA Hockey High School National Championships. Lesnak’s team, the Bethel Park Blackhawks, was the first ever from Pennsylvania to claim a national title. Lesnak also received the 2014 Badger Bob Johnson Character Award and was selected twice for the Gilmour All-Tournament Team. Active in clubs and organizations at Bethel Park High School, Derek was a member of the National Honor Society, vice president of DECA and held a chair position on the Principal’s Advisory Council of Students. Within his community, he also donated his time and efforts to the Bethel Park Special Needs Skate, Central Blood Bank, First Charities Soup Kitchen, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Run, Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team, Rainbow Run and South Hills Interfaith Ministry. Derek is the son of Dan and Elaine Lesnak of Bethel Park, PA. He currently attends the University of Pittsburgh where he majors in finance with a minor in economics. Congratulations, Derek!

GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.

PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.

VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198

RULE 57 TRIPPING

The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)

RULE 76 FACE-OFFS

To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.

RULE 64

DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: American Eagle Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) UPMC First Aid Stations, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. UPMC First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. LOST AND FOUND If an item is lost or found during an event please see the Guest Services office located outside section 104. Guests inquiring about lost items after an event should call 412.804.7903. Items lost at events are held in storage for thirty (30) days and then either disposed of or donated to an appropriate charity.

RE-ENTRY POLICY Exit and re-entry is not permitted at CONSOL Energy Center.

SECURITY In the interest of guests and staff safety, a search process is required for all events in order to prevent guests from bringing unauthorized and prohibited items into the arena.

SMOKING POLICY Smoking is not permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center.

VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.

WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. Upon arrival, guests can arrange for a wheelchair at any entrance of CONSOL Energy Center. Please see a CONSOL Energy Center employee to assist with wheelchair transportation.
