SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT

JOI GOFFUS

Hometown: Port Vue, PA Season Ticket Location: 115, N, 7-8 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 2007

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? My late father and I used to watch Penguins hockey on TV on a regular basis. I can still remember him calling me into the game room to “hurry up and get in here to check out this new kid from Canada that’s supposed to be the next big thing.” No sooner did I pass the threshold when I saw #66 get his first goal on his first shift in a Penguins uniform. When my father passed in 2007, he left each of his daughters a small amount of money from his life insurance policy. I could think of no better way to honor his memory and the special bond we shared watching our Penguins than to give myself the gift of becoming a season ticket holder and creating new memories with the Boys of Winter. WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? My husband, David. continued on page 6

5

continued from page 5

DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME RITUALS WHEN ATTENDING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? My husband and I kiss three times under the first puck that hangs over the escalators going up the American Eagle Gate. We also have to be on the right hand escalator!

Joi and her cousin, Mike, at the 2011 Winter Classic.

AS A SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHERISHED PENGUINS MEMORY? Watching Mario’s son watch his dad’s retired number being raised to the rafters. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO WEAR OR BRING TO A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? My Penguins watch that my husband bought me our first Christmas together. DO YOU OWN PITTSBURGH PENGUINS MEMORABILIA OR CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS MEMORABILIA COLLECTOR? Yes. Too much to mention, but my favorite is my “hat trick on hat night” framed and autographed photo of Sidney Crosby that I won in a silent auction at one of the games. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? Dance for a Dilly Bar DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE STORIES OR FAVORITE EXPERIENCES SINCE BECOMING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? I’ve met so many great people, from fans in the stands to the many employees that make the games such an enjoyable fan experience. Stephanie always has two cold Stella’s ready, Miss Peaches piles on the nacho cheese if you give her respect, and Chico yells at you if you cheat on him and buy beer from a different vendor. I’ve lived other places, but I am a Pittsburgh born girl, and there’s truly nothing like it.

GAME

NOTES By: Bob Grove

THE SERIES [VS] PANTHERS

The Penguins and Florida Panthers meet here tonight for the third and final time during the regular season. The teams have split the opening two games of the series, Pittsburgh winning here, 3-1, on Dec. 20 and Florida earning a 4-3 shootout victory two nights later in the first home-and-home set between the teams. . . In the Penguins’ win here, Derrick Pouliot scored a goal on his first NHL shot and Nick Spaling had a goal and an assist while Marc-Andre Fleury made 45 saves. . . In the Panthers’ home victory, Spaling and Evgeni Malkin scored goals in the final five minutes to forge a 3-3 tie before Alexander Barkov delivered the shootout winner. Jimmy Hayes had two goals for Florida in that game. . . These teams have alternated wins and losses in the last eight games they’ve played. . . In the last 30 games against Florida, the Penguins are 21-8-1. . . The Panthers have outshot Pittsburgh in three of the last four meetings, taking 37 or more shots in all three games . . . In the last eight years, the Penguins have only once scored more than one power play goal in a game against Florida, that coming on the road on Nov. 22, 2010 in a 3-2 win (2-for-3). . . Pittsburgh native Vince Trocheck scored Florida’s lone goal in the earlier game here this season. . . Spaling had two goals and three points in the two earlier games against the Panthers. . . Pittsburgh is 9-1-0 in its last 10 home games against Florida, the lone loss coming Jan. 20 last season (1-5). . . The Penguins are 1-for-26 on the power play in their last seven home games continued on page 10

continued from page 9

against the Panthers. . . Florida has scored first in 14 of its last 21 games here in Pittsburgh, including three of the last four. . . A victory tonight would give Florida the season series for the second time in two campaigns, as the Panthers went 2-1-0 against the Penguins last season. . . Pittsburgh has an all-time mark of 42-31-4-4 against Florida, including a 24-12-3-1 record here. . . No Pittsburgh player has recorded a hat trick against Florida since Mario Lemieux did so on Dec. 30, 1995, and no Penguins’ goaltender has recorded a shutout against the Panthers since Ty Conklin on Jan. 5, 2008 (3-0).

THE PENGUINS

This is Pittsburgh’s fifth game in eight days and the back end of the 12th set of games on consecutive days for the Penguins. They are 3-5-3 in the second game heading into this one. . . Pittsburgh will play in Washington on Wednesday and then have three days off before hosting Columbus one week from today (5PM start). . . The Penguins had the fourth-fewest regulation losses in the NHL (15) after dropping a 2-1 shootout in Chicago one week ago today. . . Spaling had two goals in his last three games after scoring the lone goal in the loss to the Blackhawks. . . Pittsburgh was hoping to get defenseman Christian Ehrhoff back into the lineup last week. Ehrhoff had experienced some concussion symptoms and had missed eight games going into last week’s home date with Washington. . . Sidney Crosby played his 600th NHL game Feb. 11, and his 825 points at that juncture in his career was the ninth-highest in total through 600 games in NHL history. . . continued on page 13

WORK TO BE

DONE By: Mike Prisuta

The long-awaited return of winger Blake Comeau from an extended injury absence and the inclusion of injured defenseman Christian Ehrhoff on an early-February road trip to Ottawa and Chicago pushed the Penguins to the brink of having a full complement of healthy players at their disposal. Hallelujah, Hollywood. But there remains work to be done as the Penguins continue their push toward the playoffs. Much of that involves honing their mental game, individually and collectively. There are nuances involved in such a process that will be discussed often between now and mid-April, perhaps as often as the schematic specifics of the breakout, the forecheck and the power play. Among those are: The need to pay attention to detail: “Every team is looking to play their best down the stretch,” captain Sidney Crosby observed. “You need the points but you want to make sure your playing the right way. “Teams will elevate their play at this time of the year. We need to make sure that we’re doing the same.” continued on page 24

continued from page 23

The need to appreciate playing defense: “If we defend well we’ll get our offensive chances but we have to defend well,” head coach Mike Johnston maintained. “That has to be our mindset.” The need to approach playing with a third-period lead the right way: “We sat back and looked for time to kind of tick down, find the easy way to get the win,” Crosby said after a three-goal, third-period lead got away in what became a 5-4 shootout win on Feb. 12 at Ottawa. “It didn’t work out that way.” Added Johnston: “When you see a 3-0 lead maybe your natural tendency is to sit back. Not often do you get that opportunity. We have to learn from that, for sure.” They need to keep bringing it every night against topcaliber competition: “We just gotta keep grinding, keep going after it,” center Brandon Sutter said. “If we do what we’re doing and do it the right way we’ll be OK.” The need to adjust to having a full complement of players: “We’ve been kind of waiting to gradually get everyone back,” Crosby said. “I don’t think that because we finally have that we can just kind of sit back and relax. With guys coming back everyone’s roll kind of shifts a little bit. It’ll take some time to kind of establish all of that again.” The need to get backup goaltender Thomas Greiss as ready as possible despite relative inactivity in terms of playing games: “I just find that for some of those goaltenders that don’t get in a rhythm as often, they have to make practice continued on page 26

their game,” Johnston said. “They have to take certain drills in practice and make it their game. He has to do that more often. “In practice he has to see a three-on-two, that’s his game action. Or, if there’s a power play-vs.-penalty kill in practice, that’s what he has to work on. Just sharpen up his habits and his details in practice a little bit because he’s not playing as much.” The need to stay patient, persistent and disciplined when trailing: “We just wanted to stick with our game,” defenseman Rob Scuderi said after a 1-0 deficit early in the second period was turned into a third-period goal and an eventual 2-1 shootout loss on Feb. 15 at Chicago. “It’s a 1-0 game; we’d played well for the most part. You can’t start to panic and fall off the reservation. It’s time we have some patience and just keep playing the right way. I thought every single guy in here stuck with the program. If you have to take some chances when you’re down in a game you do it at the end, but we didn’t have to. We tied it up early [in the third] and just kept playing our game.” That’s a significant list, but it’s nothing the Penguins don’t consider themselves capable of handling, especially given the relative state of good health they enjoyed as they prepared to host the Capitals on Feb. 17. “No more excuses,” forward Patric Hornqvist announced. “It’s up to us. “We have a good team. Now we just have to show everyone that.”

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

And because we bring innovative coatings and glass products to CONSOL Energy Center, we’re proud to be a part of every game. To see what other winning color formulas we’re bringing to the surface, visit ppg.com.

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

61

BOB GROVE

STUDIO HOST — PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK

After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

STEVE KOLBE

PENGUINS RADIO 24/7 HOST— PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK

Steve Kolbe enters his second season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kolbe spent 14 seasons (1997-2011) as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Washington Capitals, broadcasting over 1,100 games. Kolbe broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 and the NHL Winter Classic in 2011, and he was featured on the NHL Network’s documentary Voices in 2008. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Kolbe has over 25 years of broadcasting experience, and most recently has been a co-host of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) as well as talk show host for Major League Baseball coverage and NHL insider on CBS Radio 105.7 in Baltimore. CONSOL Energy Center IN FIFTH YEAR TO PRESENT

HMK

MORE TOP TOURS, EVENTS By: Pam Thompson

PERM

CONSOL Energy Center — now in its fifth year of hosting entertainment for every sort of audience — will present more top tours and banner sporting events in the future. The New Year will bring the Maroon 5 World Tour 2015 and the Second and Third Rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship to CONSOL Energy Center. The Pittsburgh arena’s reputation for hosting major sporting events will continue. The Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Championship will be contested in CONSOL Energy Center in 2017, the A-10 announced in September. Bernadette V. McGlade, A-10 Commissioner, says, “The opportunity to rotate our championship within the A-10 footprint is exciting. She adds that CONSOL Energy Center is a state-of-the-art venue with great fan amenities and a successful history of hosting NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship events. Commenting on the significance of having a facility like CONSOL Energy Center in the community, Craig Davis, President and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH, says: “Pittsburgh is at the top of its game when it comes to sports, and CONSOL has been the linchpin for our success in attracting national events such as USA Gymnastics P&G Championships, NCAA Men’s Frozen Four and NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Combined with Penguins games and the fact that it is a top-performing concert venue in terms of sales, this building and AEG have been invaluable in terms of providing visibility and economic impact to the Pittsburgh region. “ Davis adds, “Sports events are an ever-growing opportunity within the tourism industry. The market segment is 25 percent of our convention sales team’s bookings. Having CONSOL Energy Center is key to the arsenal of facilities we can offer when bidding on large sporting events in our region.” continued on page 76

There is no limit

Home of the to the types of Pittsburgh Penguins and entertainment the Pittsburgh Power, and concerts at CONSOL Energy CONSOL Energy Center Center. has annually hosted the Three Rivers Classic of men’s collegiate hockey, the second annual CCM/ USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in 2013, and the NHL Draft in 2012. In addition to sporting events, well over 300 performances took place at CONSOL Energy Center in its first four Paul McCartney years of operation. Leading the eclectic parade of entertainers performing for CONSOL Energy Center audiences, Paul McCartney, the inaugural act on August 18, 2010, sold out his first show so quickly that a second performance was added for the next night. After winning five Grammy Awards earlier this year, McCartney came back to CONSOL Energy Center in July with his universally acclaimed “Out There” tour and played for another sold-out crowd. In his most recent appearance, McCartney sang and played his way through his ambitious set list and two encores, performing some 40 songs with dedications to his wife, Nancy, his late wife, Linda, the civil rights demonstrators of the ‘60s, his dad and Ringo Starr for their birthdays that coincided with the concert, as well as John Lennon and George Harrison. There is no limit to the types of entertainment and concerts appearing on CONSOL Energy Center stages. Concerts — rock, pop, doo wop, Christian, country and more — have included One Direction, Lady Gaga, Donnie and Marie Osmond, Foo Fighters, Casting Crowns, Katy Perry, Barry Manilow, Black Keys, Carrie Underwood, Drake, the “Justins” — Bieber and Timberlake, Arcade Fire, Wiz Khalifa, Bruno Mars, Usher, Miley Cyrus, Michael Bublé, Andre Rieu, Hillsong United, Josh Groban, TobyMac, New Kids on the Block, Chris Tomlin and Celtic Woman. Opening in August 2010, CONSOL Energy Center soon won accolades as a venue for concerts and sports, as well as for its environmentally friendly design and features. • POLLSTAR, the concert industry’s leading business trade publication, honored Pittsburgh’s state-of-the-art entertainment site with its award for Best New Major Concert Venue in North America, a selection made by leading concert industry executives. • The Facilities Magazine Prime Site award went to CONSOL Energy Center in 2010-2011 and 2012. • The home of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Power is the first arena in the NHL and the AFL to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold Certification. • It was nominated in 2011 for Sports Business Journal’s Sports Facility of the Year, and in the same year Sports Business Journal’s

6th annual readers’ survey named CONSOL Energy Center the best NHL arena. • It won the National “Hall of Headlines” award from Venues Today magazine. • Its Box Office was nominated for “Box Office of the Year” by the International Ticketing Association. • The Master Builders’ Association (MBA) top prize for Best New Construction in the category over $10 Million was awarded to PJ Dick Incorporated for its role as construction manager on CONSOL Energy Center. • On the environmental front, CONSOL Energy Center was a nominee for the Sustainability Award at the International Business Awards in Barcelona, Spain in 2011. • The building won the Green Power: Turn It On! Award from PennFuture. • CONSOL Energy Center was honored as the most innovative energy efficient glass project in Glass Magazine’s Crystal Achievement Awards. CONSOL Energy Center claims the most comfortable seating arrangement in the NHL — seats up to 24 inches wide, with an accompanying increase in legroom. The center also provides ADA accessibility, family restrooms and guest services locations on all seating levels, as well as 12 escalators — that’s 10 more than at the Civic Arena. In addition to entertainment and sporting events, the arena’s main floor, suites, dining facilities and common areas are used for fundraisers and countless private functions. This year, CONSOL Energy Center hosted the Hillman Cancer Center Gala for the fourth time. It is the venue for the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s annual signature fundraisers -- Skates & Plates and the Wine Tasting Gala. The venue also has hosted the Pens Foundation’s scholarship winners and students attending its Explorer Series, CONSOL Energy’s Community All-Stars recognition programs, and Check Your Heart screenings. All of these activities contribute to making CONSOL Energy Center a busy Elton John place all year round.

Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”

said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. For more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

HOCKEY IS FOR

EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

DRAFT CLASS

KASPERI KAPANEN

Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.

SAM LAFFERTY

Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

ANTHONY ANGELLO

Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.

JADEN LINDO

Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

JEFF TAYLOR

Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. Taylor led all Union rookie blueliners in scoring with 16 points. Beyond the Numbers: Last season Jeff was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team as an 18-year-old true freshman.

PROJECT

POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settler’s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS PROFILE

BLAKE

COMEAU By: Mark Madden

Winger Blake Comeau scored 11 goals in his first 32 games this season, but broke his wrist Dec. 22. He missed seven weeks. Did his momentum dissipate? It certainly doesn’t look like it. Comeau returned to the Penguins’ lineup Feb. 11 vs. Detroit at CONSOL Energy Center. He got an assist just 1:51 into the game, getting a helper on Patric Hornqvist’s tally. Comeau scored a goal at 12:15 of the first period, going to the slot to knock in Hornqvist’s feed from behind the net. The Penguins won, 4-1. The next night, it was a bit more of the same. Comeau got an assist as the Penguins got a 5-4 shootout victory at Ottawa. “I had a little bit of nerves, but a lot of adrenaline,” Comeau said after helping the Penguins top Detroit. “Once I got the first shift out of the way, I got into the game and got the nerves out of me. Just went out and played.” Upon Comeau’s return from injury, coach Mike Johnston certainly put him in position to succeed. He joined Hornqvist and Evgeni Malkin on a very potent line. “They’re straight-line guys. They go with speed,” Johnston said. “The big thing is chemistry, and you’ve got a guy who goes to the net in Hornqvist. You’ve got Geno to make plays and, as you saw, when Comeau gets open in the slot, he’s got a great shot.” continued on page 162

161

continued from page 161

Comeau definitely has no problem with that line combination. “[Geno and I] had some good chemistry before I got injured,” Comeau said. “I played a little bit with Hornqvist, too. “Horny’s an easy guy to play with. He works hard and gets in on the forecheck. Just like my goal: He created the turnover and got it out to me. Obviously, Geno’s a player who controls the puck and controls the play. And when he’s got it, you just try to get open.” Comeau and Hornqvist play a similar style. “We’re both physical players,” Comeau agreed. “He likes to go to the net. I like to go to the net. We’re both guys that can shoot the puck. “I think we’re a good complement to Geno’s style. He’s got the puck a lot. So we just want to be around the net for him. Create havoc, and we’ve got to try to get open for shots as well.” Comeau (6-foot-1, 202 pounds) signed with the Penguins as a free agent during the off-season. He had five goals and 11 assists in 61 games with Columbus last season. He had no points in six playoff games, all played against the Penguins. Comeau, 28, scored a career-best 24 goals with the New York Islanders in 2010-11. This season, he was on pace to top that before getting hurt, and may yet make a run at that mark. He had 12 goals and 10 assists in his first 34 games this campaign, going plus-7. Comeau was satisfied with his comeback performance, and also with how he felt. “Yeah, I was happy,” said the Saskatchewan native. “I got my legs going. There was maybe a little fatigue in the third. “I was doing some puck drills with our strength coach [Mike Kadar]. Some skill stuff, which really helped. I only got one full practice in with the team. The most important thing was trying to keep my legs in the best shape I could.” The Red Wings came into that Feb. 11 game hot, having won three straight and nine of their last 10. But the Penguins controlled most of the play. Comeau hoped the Penguins could keep the energy flowing. “I think we’ve got to use [this win] as some momentum,” Comeau said. “We’ve got to realize what we’re doing well. I thought we had success getting guys to the net. We created a lot when we got pucks behind them.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

SPALING

MAKING HIS MARK By: Haley Sawyer

Forward Nick Spaling was acquired from Nashville this past summer along with Patric Hornqvist in exchange for James Neal. The Penguins may have taken the man out of the Music City, but they couldn’t take the Music City out of the man. “I need a guitar teacher,” Spaling said. “It’s on the to-do list. I’m into country, so [I want to] learn to play country songs.” Spaling cites Sam Hunt, Eric Church, Brett Eldredge and Garth Brooks as some of his favorite artists of the moment. He was in attendance for one of Brooks’ concerts at CONSOL Energy Center in February. “One of the best concerts I’ve seen,” Spaling said. In addition to leaving America’s country music capital, Spaling has also had to temporarily part ways with his dog, a Golden Doodle named Henry. “He’s been back and forth. He hasn’t been here the whole time,” Spaling said. “He’s still hanging out with my parents a lot right now.”

Other than being without man’s best friend, it’s been an easy transition to Pittsburgh for Spaling. “It was easier to come during the summer,” he said. “It wasn’t a rush; it was a little easier to get adjusted and do it on my own time. “Right when the trade happened, I had a lot of excitement just to come in and see a lot of the players that I’ve been watching and I haven’t seen a lot being in the west.” He was seen as a good fit for the Penguins right off the bat. “Character, good dressing room guy,” general manager Jim Rutherford said shortly after the trade. “It gives us more balance in our forwards.” It was easy for Spaling to find his place among his new teammates, especially since he already knew a few of them. Familiar faces were Hornqvist, because of their time together in Nashville, as well as Robert Bortuzzo and Steve Downie, whom he played with in juniors. Spaling teamed with Bortuzzo to win the Ontario Hockey League championship with Kitchener in 2008. Spaling had 14 goals and 30 points in 20 playoff games during the Rangers’ run. “Sometimes you get caught talking about the olden days, but we knew each other pretty well,” Spaling said. “I played with ‘Bort’ for three years in juniors, so I knew him pretty well. It was an easy adjustment and you kind of pick up where you left off.” Another old teammate of Spaling’s from juniors is his own brother, Nathan. But his brother wasn’t just a teammate; he was the reason a three-year-old Nick took an interest in hockey. “It made it a lot more fun for me being able to watch him,” Spaling said. “He was always so much better, so I got to learn a lot from him and I think develop a little quicker being able to play with him at home. continued on page 177

“We just fooled around a lot playing hockey growing up.” In addition to Nathan, Spaling also has an older sister and younger sister. “Everybody had something going on,” Spaling said. “We’re a pretty close group of siblings which made it pretty fun growing up, being able to go watch my brother play hockey, watch my sisters play volleyball or whatever they were doing.” Being one of four kids in the household can give someone a grounded attitude and sense of responsibility, which might explain Spaling’s willingness to jump into any forward position. Throughout an injury-plagued season, Spaling is one of just two Penguins — along with Rob Scuderi — to play in every one of the team’s first 56 games, giving him the chance to fill in at a few different spots. He’s taken advantage of his opportunities, as Spaling had already potted nine goals by Feb. 16 — leaving him just four shy of his career high set last season with 26 games left to play. “It’s been one of those years where the injuries piled up fast,” Spaling said. “One of the biggest things was guys coming in and young guys being able to play big roles and they did a good job. That’s a great thing for the depth of our team.” Spaling’s nose has a crescent-shaped scar, thanks to a run-in with Simon Despres’ stick at a practice earlier this season. The Penguins have clearly left a mark on him, but his dexterous attitude has helped him make a mark of his own on the team.

MARTIN WELCOMES

WWII VET By: Haley Sawyer

Frank Milko, a World War II veteran, stood outside the Penguins locker room beaming. And it’s not just because his 90th birthday was right around the corner. Before Pittsburgh’s game against the Detroit Red Wings at CONSOL Energy Center on Feb. 11, the vet was introduced to Penguins defenseman Paul Martin. “I’m a little bit angry at my nephew for not telling me about this, but I’m thrilled to be here,” Milko said. “They brought me in and didn’t tell me one thing at all about what was going to happen here,” he continued. “I thought I was just coming to a hockey game.” Milko, of Munhall, PA, served in the 17th Airborne Division, a group of paratroopers that played a role in the Battle of the Bulge that took place from Dec. 16, 1944 to Jan. 25, 1945. Milko is one of three brothers to serve as paratroopers in the war. When Martin heard about the significance of Milko’s service, he had to meet him. “I’m still thrilled about meeting him. I feel real good that I met him,” Milko said. Every home game, Martin buys four seats at CONSOL Energy Center and donates them to United States veterans as part of Paul’s Platoon. Vets have been all ages; some serving in wars from World War II to the second Iraq War. Although a Penguins fan since the beginning, the game against Detroit was his first at CONSOL Energy Center. He’s seen games at Mellon Arena and even watched the Pittsburgh Hornets. As for the outcome of the game, Milko was confident in the Penguins. “Pittsburgh is definitely going to win tonight,” the veteran said. “Detroit’s got a good team, but they’re going to win tonight. I’d say 4-3.” And Milko was right, as the Penguins defeated their opponent 4-1.

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta

3-FOR-3: Calgary C Lance Bouma netted his third game-winning goal of the season — all have been scored in third periods — in a 3-2 victory over Vancouver on Valentine’s Day. Bouma’s second game-winning goal in the Flames’ last three games pushed his season total for goals to 10, doubling his previous career-high total. The win over the Canucks was the Flames’ NHL-best 24th against the Western Conference. Calgary also matched the New York Islanders for the league lead with its 18th win against a division opponent.

GOING WILD: Minnesota took on Vancouver on Feb. 16 having tied a franchise record by registering at least a point in 10 consecutive games (8-0-2) and with a 10-1-2 mark in its last 13 games since the Jan. 14 acquisition of G Devan Dubnyk from Arizona for a third-round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

B’s SPRING A LEAK: Boston allowed a combined 10 goals in back-

184

to-back losses to Dallas (5-3 on Feb. 10) and at Vancouver (5-2 on Feb. 13), the most goals the Bruins had surrendered in consecutive games since they’d allowed 11 on Nov. 12-13. Boston hadn’t allowed more than three non-shootout goals in a game since Dec. 27 (a 6-2 loss in Columbus).

GETTING IT BACK: The Islanders took on the Rangers on Feb. 16 with a record of 13-0-0 in games during which they had allowed the first goal but scored the second. Getting to three goals had also proved significant for the Isles through 56 games (they were 31-5-1 when scoring three or more, including shootout game-winning goals).

500 CLUB: The Rangers’ Alain Vigneault became the 21st coach in NHL history to reach the 500-victories plateau and the first to get his 500th win behind the Rangers’ bench with a 6-3 win over Columbus on Feb. 14. Vigneault tied Toe Blake for 20th on the NHL’s all-time list, one behind No. 19 Pat Burns (501).

PLAYERS THROW STRIKES

(AND GUTTER BALLS) FOR CHARITY AT PENS AND PINS By: Haley Sawyer

Although it was a different type of competition than they’re used to, the Penguins assembled for a greater cause on Feb. 9 at Paradise Island Bowl and Beach for the sixth annual Penguins Wives Pens and Pins bowling tournament to benefit MakeA-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The Penguins players served as celebrity captains alongside Wish children and registered fans for each competing bowling team. “It’s special when you can give something back,” head coach Mike Johnston said. “I look around and see our players here and when you really watch them closely, they’re a lot like the kids as well. They’re having as much fun as the young guys.” “My husband [Marc-Andre] and most of his teammates are still big kids, so they enjoy it as much as the kids,” agreed Veronique Fleury. “It’s great to see them have fun for such a great cause.” In addition to the bowling, a silent auction featuring autographed items and a bake sale were held to gain additional funds. Each Penguin was also designated their own monogrammed bowling shirt, which they autographed for an online auction to be held at a later date. continued on page 190

It was a special night for 10-year-old Ali Challingsworth, who was diagnosed at birth with tubular sclerosis, a seizure disorder. “I’m having tons of fun,” Challingsworth said. However, philanthropy didn’t get in the way of some healthy competition that night. Some Penguins are experienced bowlers, like Simon Despres, Robert Bortuzzo and forward Zach Sill, who would hit the lanes after practices during their tenure in Wilkes-Barre. “I haven’t played in a couple of months, but I had a sequence in my life where I bowled a lot,” Despres said. “I got my own bag, my own shoes, I got a towel, I’ve got two balls, actually.” Others, however, were less than stellar. “[I’m not doing so] well,” Marc-Andre Fleury said. “I’m second-last on my team, so not that good.” “I tried, but [I was] beat by a lot,” Crosby added with a laugh. But whether they were throwing strikes or gutter balls, each player recognizes what events like Pens and Pins means to the fans and even more, the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “The community does so much for us, supporting us, so we love to give back,” Bortuzzo said. “I know for a lot of the guys, these are the events that we want to go to and have fun with kids.”

RULES CHANGES nhl.com

RULE 1.8

RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.

RULE 23

GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.

RULE 24

PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.

RULE 38

VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198

197

continued from page 197

referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.

RULE 57 TRIPPING

The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)

RULE 76 FACE-OFFS

To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.

RULE 64

DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME

* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.

RULE 85

PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.

RULE 1.9

RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
