SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT
LYNN COZZO
Hometown: Youngstown, OH Season Ticket Location: 208, M, 19-20 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 2000
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? I was raised to be a Penguins fan. My first game was when I was six months old. My parents started to follow the team when they entered the league, so it was in my blood to be a fan. WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? I attend most games with my boyfriend, but if he can’t go, I take my sister or nephews. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CURRENT PITTSBURGH PENGUINS PLAYER? Brandon Sutter WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ALL-TIME PITTSBURGH PENGUINS PLAYER? Alexei Kovalev DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME RITUALS WHEN ATTENDING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? On game days, I have a certain order I must put on my jewelry. I need to enter the building and go through the line first. continued on page 6

continued from page 5
AS A SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHERISHED PENGUINS MEMORY? The 2009 Stanley Cup banner celebration and the Season Ticket Holder Snapshots with Stanley event. It was awesome to be a small part of the celebration Lynn and her boyfriend, Jim, and say I supported the at Snapshots for Stanley. team through the dark years with only 6,000 fans in the stands, but it was so worth it! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO WEAR OR BRING TO A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? I wear my Crosby game jersey, Penguins earrings and a Love for Lokomotiv bracelet to every game. AS A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PROMOTIONAL GIVEAWAY AND/OR EVENT? The tickets that Wendell August Forge made for the final regular season game at the Civic Arena and the first game at CONSOL Energy Center were very unique and I am proud to have one. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? I love when the local youth teams play between periods. Watching the kids play is great and a unique opportunity for them to be on the same ice as some of their heroes. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE STORIES OR FAVORITE EXPERIENCES SINCE BECOMING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? One of the best experiences was having the opportunity to go to Chicago and be a part of the Stadium Series. It was unbelievably bitter cold that day, but I would not change a minute of the experience. We met a lot of nice Blackhawks fans that enjoyed the experience as much as we did.

THE SERIES [VS] OILERS
Tonight the Penguins host the Edmonton Oilers, an opponent against which they have points in eight consecutive games, the longest such streak in Penguins’ history. They are 6-0-2 against the Oilers since suffering a 3-1 loss here to Edmonton on Jan. 10, 2006. . . Pittsburgh also has points in 14 of its last 16 games against the Oilers, going 10-2-2 with two ties in that span. . . Pittsburgh has scored the first goal in five straight games against Edmonton and six of the last seven. . . The Penguins have won three straight home games against the Oilers and are 12-2-0 with two ties in their last 16 home games against them. Pittsburgh has scored first in 12 of those 16 games here. . . Over the last 18-plus years, the Oilers have only once scored more than three goals in a game here, that coming Nov. 6, 2008 in a 5-4 Pittsburgh win. . . The only other meeting between the teams this season was in Edmonton on Feb. 4, when Marc-Andre Fleury made 22 saves in a 2-0 victory. Evgeni Malkin scored in the opening minute of the second period and former Oiler David Perron in the final minute of the period. . . Fleury has won six consecutive starts against Edmonton since that 3-1 loss here in 2006. He has allowed five goals in his last four starts continued on page 10

Tonight would mark just his third home game against them. . . Sidney Crosby has points in three straight games against Edmonton (1+5) and points in five of his last six against them (1+9). . . Former Penguin Rob Klinkhammer was scoreless Feb. 4 when he faced his old teammates for the first time since moving to the Oilers. . . Tonight marks the 70th all-time meeting of the teams. The Penguins are 28-35-4-2, including an 18-13-3-0 mark here in Pittsburgh. The Oilers have outscored Pittsburgh in the all-time series, 295-242.
THE PENGUINS
This is Pittsburgh’s first home game since completing the longest road trip of the season, a four-game trip that included games in Colorado, Anaheim, Los Angeles and San Jose. The Penguins will host Boston on Saturday and Detroit on Sunday. . . Pittsburgh won its fourth straight game March 1 here with a 5-3 victory over Columbus, as Malkin had two goals and one assist for his third straight three-point game — something he hadn’t done in more than seven years. . . The four-game win streak was Pittsburgh’s continued on page 13

longest since winning seven straight games Oct. 25–Nov. 8 . . . Crosby had two points in the win over the Blue Jackets. . . Rob Scuderi played his 700th NHL game against Columbus, which was also his 415th with the Penguins. . . Checking forward Daniel Winnik made his Pittsburgh debut in the win over Columbus after being acquired from Toronto for Zach Sill and two draft choices. Winnik assisted on a Steve Downie goal in the game. . . The Pittsburgh power play had produced a goal in four straight games (6-for-18, 33.3 percent) after going 3-for-6 against the Jackets. It was just the fourth time this season that the Penguins had three power play goals in one game. At that point the Pittsburgh power play was ranked sixth in the NHL at 21.3 percent. . . Malkin began the recent road trip with a five-game scoring streak (5+6), while Crosby had points in four straight. . . Kris Letang began the road trip leading all NHL defensemen in scoring with 49 points . . . Pittsburgh began the western road trip with just seven regulation losses on the road, fewest in the NHL. . . Winnik, who became the 38th different player to dress for the Penguins this season, played his college hockey at the University of New Hampshire. Other Penguins to play at New Hampshire were Eric Boguniecki, Andy Brickley, Ty Conklin, Bruce Crowder, Stephen Leach and Trevor Smith. . . The Penguins used 39 different players last season. The team record is 48 in 1983-84. . . Through the first 62 games, Pittsburgh was 26-2-1 when leading going to the third period. . . The last game of the road trip was in San Jose on Monday night, where the Penguins were hoping to record their first victory in more than 17 years; their last win there was Oct. 22, 1997.

THE STRETCH
RUN By: Mike Prisuta
The Penguins embarked upon an ambitious March that included 15 games in 31 days riding a three-game winning streak that was perceived as encouraging but not necessarily defining. Not with such a busy stretch run beckoning. “We still have a lot of hockey left to go,” defenseman Paul Martin insisted. “I don’t think we can be comfortable.” Captain Sidney Crosby concurred. “We found a little bit more consistency but that’s still not enough,” Crosby maintained. “We definitely have room for improvement and this is a time where you really want to answer as a group and have that identity down the stretch. “This is an important time of year.” The importance of fortifying the penalty killing entering the stretch run and the postseason hadn’t been lost on the Penguins before, during and after the acquisition of forward Daniel Winnik from Toronto. “We’ve been talking about that for quite a while,” head coach Mike Johnston said. “What Winnik does is he gives us a primary depth guy who is a top-notch penalty killer. Really, you need five forwards that can kill for sure because one of them might be in the [penalty] box. “Once he gets in the swing of things he’ll help our penalty kill, which is strong already.” continued on page 24

The need to establish willingness and a consistent ability to score the quote-unquote “dirty goals” by relentlessly driving to the net was another point of emphasis. “You’re not going to see the highlight-reel goals much anymore,” defenseman Rob Scuderi pointed out. “During the last 25 games of the season everybody’s clamping down. If you’re going to play a team that’s remotely in the playoff race it’s going to be a tight game. The pretty play is not there. Even on the power play it’s not there. “It’s getting pucks and bodies to the net and crashing it and trying to get an ugly one.” Ramping up the intensity and the urgency, especially in Metropolitan Division games the Penguins had for the most part struggled with for much of the season, was likewise on the agenda. “You have to find a way to correct it whether it’s making sure that you make little adjustments or making sure that we realize that those games, the intensity and the emotion are a little higher and we need to raise our game with that,” Crosby offered. “I think that’s probably the biggest thing, just understanding the intensity kind of raises when we play those division games.” Still another priority was continuing to hone a comfort level playing the type of tight, low-scoring continued on page 26

and highly-competitive games the Penguins are destined to play in the playoffs. “I find our team, in the last half of this year, so far has been good in those 1-0 games, those 1-1 games,” Johnston said. “I feel very comfortable on the bench. I think our bench is very calm in those situations. “I felt earlier in the year we kind of wanted to push it. If we were down, behind 1-0, we’d try to force things and then you’re down 2-0. And once you’re down 2-0 late in a game then you’re really in trouble. “Handling games that are 1-1, 2-2 near the end of the game is something you’ve really got to be able to do at this time of the year. You have to be able to push it to overtime. If it’s in that situation collect the point and try to get it into overtime.” Points were predictably precious entering the stretch run. The Penguins hosted the Blue Jackets on March 2 with 79 points and as part of a Metropolitan Division log jam that also included the Islanders (84 points), Rangers (82) and Capitals (76) all vying for the top spot. “Everybody is so close, you just need to make sure you’re playing the right way and getting points,” Crosby advised. “The division, things like that, that’s the kind of stuff that will take care of itself. “You worry about your own game and making sure we’re playing the right way and getting points out of it.” Center Evgeni Malkin was focused on attitude as much as anything else heading into the stretch run. “Every game, just small steps forward,” he said. “Play right, heads up and stay positive.”

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

Of all the coatings, paints and stains we’ve made in our 130-year history, two colors stand out among the rest: Black and Gold. Our Pittsburgh roots run deep, and so does our commitment to giving back to the place we call home. And because we bring innovative coatings and glass products to CONSOL Energy Center, we’re proud to be a part of every game. To see what other winning color formulas we’re bringing to the surface, visit ppg.com.

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

CONSOL Energy Center IN FIFTH YEAR TO PRESENT
HMK
MORE TOP TOURS, EVENTS By: Pam Thompson
PERM
CONSOL Energy Center — now in its fifth year of hosting entertainment for every sort of audience — will present more top tours and banner sporting events in the future. The New Year will bring the Maroon 5 World Tour 2015 and the Second and Third Rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship to CONSOL Energy Center. The Pittsburgh arena’s reputation for hosting major sporting events will continue. The Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Championship will be contested in CONSOL Energy Center in 2017, the A-10 announced in September. Bernadette V. McGlade, A-10 Commissioner, says, “The opportunity to rotate our championship within the A-10 footprint is exciting. She adds that CONSOL Energy Center is a state-of-the-art venue with great fan amenities and a successful history of hosting NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship events. Commenting on the significance of having a facility like CONSOL Energy Center in the community, Craig Davis, President and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH, says: “Pittsburgh is at the top of its game when it comes to sports, and CONSOL has been the linchpin for our success in attracting national events such as USA Gymnastics P&G Championships, NCAA Men’s Frozen Four and NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Combined with Penguins games and the fact that it is a top-performing concert venue in terms of sales, this building and AEG have been invaluable in terms of providing visibility and economic impact to the Pittsburgh region. “ Davis adds, “Sports events are an ever-growing opportunity within the tourism industry. The market segment is 25 percent of our convention sales team’s bookings. Having CONSOL Energy Center is key to the arsenal of facilities we can offer when bidding on large sporting events in our region.” continued on page 76

Home of the to the types of Pittsburgh Penguins and entertainment the Pittsburgh Power, and concerts at CONSOL Energy CONSOL Energy Center Center. has annually hosted the Three Rivers Classic of men’s collegiate hockey, the second annual CCM/ USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in 2013, and the NHL Draft in 2012. In addition to sporting events, well over 300 performances took place at CONSOL Energy Center in its first four Paul McCartney years of operation. Leading the eclectic parade of entertainers performing for CONSOL Energy Center audiences, Paul McCartney, the inaugural act on August 18, 2010, sold out his first show so quickly that a second performance was added for the next night. After winning five Grammy Awards earlier this year, McCartney came back to CONSOL Energy Center in July with his universally acclaimed “Out There” tour and played for another sold-out crowd. In his most recent appearance, McCartney sang and played his way through his ambitious set list and two encores, performing some 40 songs with dedications to his wife, Nancy, his late wife, Linda, the civil rights demonstrators of the ‘60s, his dad and Ringo Starr for their birthdays that coincided with the concert, as well as John Lennon and George Harrison. There is no limit to the types of entertainment and concerts appearing on CONSOL Energy Center stages. Concerts — rock, pop, doo wop, Christian, country and more — have included One Direction, Lady Gaga, Donnie and Marie Osmond, Foo Fighters, Casting Crowns, Katy Perry, Barry Manilow, Black Keys, Carrie Underwood, Drake, the “Justins” — Bieber and Timberlake, Arcade Fire, Wiz Khalifa, Bruno Mars, Usher, Miley Cyrus, Michael Bublé, Andre Rieu, Hillsong United, Josh Groban, TobyMac, New Kids on the Block, Chris Tomlin and Celtic Woman. In addition to the legendary McCartney, music icons like Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Roger Waters, Billy Joel, Bob continued on page 79

6th annual readers’ survey named CONSOL Energy Center the best NHL arena. • It won the National “Hall of Headlines” award from Venues Today magazine. • Its Box Office was nominated for “Box Office of the Year” by the International Ticketing Association. • The Master Builders’ Association (MBA) top prize for Best New Construction in the category over $10 Million was awarded to PJ Dick Incorporated for its role as construction manager on CONSOL Energy Center. • On the environmental front, CONSOL Energy Center was a nominee for the Sustainability Award at the International Business Awards in Barcelona, Spain in 2011. • The building won the Green Power: Turn It On! Award from PennFuture. • CONSOL Energy Center was honored as the most innovative energy efficient glass project in Glass Magazine’s Crystal Achievement Awards. CONSOL Energy Center claims the most comfortable seating arrangement in the NHL — seats up to 24 inches wide, with an accompanying increase in legroom. The center also provides ADA accessibility, family restrooms and guest services locations on all seating levels, as well as 12 escalators — that’s 10 more than at the Civic Arena. In addition to entertainment and sporting events, the arena’s main floor, suites, dining facilities and common areas are used for fundraisers and countless private functions. This year, CONSOL Energy Center hosted the Hillman Cancer Center Gala for the fourth time. It is the venue for the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s annual signature fundraisers -- Skates & Plates and the Wine Tasting Gala. The venue also has hosted the Pens Foundation’s scholarship winners and students attending its Explorer Series, CONSOL Energy’s Community All-Stars recognition programs, and Check Your Heart screenings. All of these activities contribute to making CONSOL Energy Center a busy Elton John place all year round.

2015-16 TRYOUTS
Starting in 2015-16, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ official youth hockey program will expand to two teams in the 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, and 2001 birth years for boys and the U10 and U12 age classifications for the girls teams. “With the explosion in youth hockey interest and the opening of the world class UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex this summer in Cranberry, we felt it was the perfect time to expand our program and create opportunities for more young players to utilize this great facility,” said Rich Hixon, executive director of strategic planning for the Pittsburgh Penguins and vice president of the Penguins Elite Amateur Hockey Association. “They also will have access to the outstanding coaches and trainers who will work at the facility. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in the late summer, will be the new home and headquarters of Penguins Elite. Games, practices, specialized training sessions and tournaments will take place at the new facility, which will also be the practice home of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The two teams — Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and the Pittsburgh Penguins Black — will both play AAA schedules. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will continue to play a full schedule of games and showcase events against the most elite programs in North America. The Pittsburgh Penguins Black teams will play a highlycompetitive AAA schedule, featuring games and tournaments designed to maximize each player’s development. Penguins Elite will continue to field one team in the midget age groups for boys (U15, U16, and U18) and the U14, U16, and U19 age classifications for the girls program. Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”
said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. HOCKEY IS FOR
EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

DRAFT CLASS
KASPERI KAPANEN
Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.
SAM LAFFERTY
Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

ANTHONY ANGELLO
Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.
JADEN LINDO
Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.
JEFF TAYLOR
Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. Taylor led all Union rookie blueliners in scoring with 16 points. Beyond the Numbers: Last season Jeff was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team as an 18-year-old true freshman.

PROJECT
POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settler’s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS PROFILE
PAUL
MARTIN By: Mark Madden
Paul Martin plays. And plays. And plays. Then he plays some more. As February turned into March, the Minneapolis-born defenseman ranked second on the Penguins in ice time (22:35 per game), trailing only partner Kris Letang (25:36). Martin was playing a lot of minutes, and good minutes. “Martin plays quiet minutes,” Penguins Coach Mike Johnston said. “Half the time you barely notice him, because he never gives up anything. “[At St. Louis on Feb. 21], he played against [high-scoring winger Vladimir] Tarasenko the whole night, and I thought he was really good. Tanger is a little more dynamic, so you notice him more. They’re a good combo.” The Penguins won 4-2 at St. Louis, holding on after building a 4-0 lead. Martin likes piling up the minutes. “You always want to get as many minutes as you can,” said Martin, 33. continued on page 162

continued from page 161
Martin likes partnering with Letang, too. “Tanger’s really come into his own,” Martin said. “He’s being more responsible as far as knowing when to get up the ice and when not to. He’s managing the puck a lot better. I think our games complement each other well. Hopefully it continues to get better. We’re able to play a game where we just kind of read off each other.” Johnston likes his top defense pairing. “You got one guy that can jump into the play, and the other guy is really supportive, a good defenseman who moves the puck really well,” Johnston said. “They’ve been a really solid pair for us.” Martin is having a really solid season. After 53 games, he had three goals and 12 assists. His mark of plus-18 was a team best. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder scored a big goal when the host Penguins beat hard-charging Florida 5-1 on Feb. 22. Martin entered the zone late, then took a cross-ice dish from Sidney Crosby before netting a wrist shot just 19 seconds into the third period. The goal gave the Penguins a 3-0 lead and drove a stake into the heart of the visitors. “Sid made a great play in the neutral zone, and their weak-side forward kind of slipped and fell,” Martin said. “So I was hollering to Sid, and he made a great cross-ice play, and I was able to find the back of the net.” Martin is often used on the Penguins’ power play, usually on the second unit but also on the first. The Pens’ PP ranked eighth in the NHL with a 20.4 conversion percentage as of Feb. 27, but that unit has struggled since late November and didn’t score a goal in nine games from Feb. 1–Feb. 19. Business picked up a bit after that, however, as the Penguins scored a power-play tally in each of their next three games, all victories. “The guys that we have on [the power play] are so talented that sometimes, it becomes an issue of simplifying things,” Martin said. “Get the puck in the zone, get the guys in their spots and start shooting. Get guys going to the net. Once you start shooting, it opens up the lanes for everything else. “Sometimes we’re looking to make too cute of a play. We’ve got to get it and shoot it, and get guys going to the net. We’ve got good guys in front that can capitalize on those second chances.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

IN IT TO
WINNIK By: Michelle Crechiolo
Daniel Winnik knew he was likely to be moved before the March 2 trade deadline, and had been preparing himself for a while. With his Maple Leafs low in the league standings and the 30-year-old forward having a big year, he’d been the subject of a lot of rumors. The thing about trades is that while you may be expecting them, at the end of the day you still don’t know where you’re going to land. You could go anywhere — to another team in the basement, or one higher up. So when Winnik found out he was going to a contender like Pittsburgh, he was thrilled. “When [Leafs general manager] Dave Nonis called me and told me that he traded me, it was like he had a pause for dramatic effect,” Winnik said with a laugh. “It seemed like a while. I was just waiting for the team and it’s like ‘okay, what team?’ And then he said the Penguins, and I was really excited because I know I’ve got the chance to win the Stanley Cup.” The Penguins acquired Winnik from Toronto for forward Zach Sill, a 2015 fourth-round draft pick and a 2016 second-round draft pick. Pittsburgh had been interested in Winnik for a while, as general manager Jim Rutherford said they began talking to Toronto about a month before the trade and tried to make a move on him a couple of weeks later, but couldn’t bring the deal together then. With the Penguins so close to the cap, they had to get creative to make it work this time around — and part of that required the Leafs retaining half of Winnik’s salary in the deal.

“This was an important one for us,” Rutherford said. “He’s a guy that will fit in our top nine. He gives us more balance and more depth up front. Something we were looking for. He’s had a very good year, one of the best in his career. He’s a top penalty killer in this league.” Winnik said his shorthanded prowess is his biggest asset. At the time of the trade he was averaging a staggering 3:27 shorthanded minutes per game, which ranked first among all NHL forwards. “I’ve logged a lot of minutes on the penalty kill, so I look forward to helping that,” Winnik said. “There was a different approach here in Toronto for a bit where they actually just wanted me to stay out for the full two minutes against some power plays. When I played Pittsburgh, we had the 5-on-3 and I was out for the full two minutes. I’m fine handling it.” To even-strength situations, Winnik brings versatility. He can play every position and slot in anywhere from the first to the fourth line if needed. “I think it’s one of the reasons I’ve been in the league for eight years,” Winnik said. “I’ve been able to play all those positions. I’m not labeled as just a left wing, can’t play anywhere else. It creates more opportunities for me in lineups. I actually like playing the right side; I find it easier [since] I’m a left-hand shot, so that’s something that’s nice. continued on page 177

“Then having played center all my life before I moved to Phoenix, that’s helped me be able to just jump back into a center role. And not only just with playing left, center or right — I can play on all four lines. It really doesn’t matter.” Winnik’s also got a big body at 6-foot-2, 207 pounds, and uses his size and skating to hunt down and be strong on pucks — which shows in his possession numbers. “I’ve mainly been used in my career as a shutdown guy and mainly in a thirdline role,” Winnik said. “I’ll just look to add some secondary scoring, be physical and be fast on the puck.” Before the trade, the Toronto native was in his first season with his hometown Maple Leafs. So while it will be difficult for Winnik to leave his family behind, he can’t wait to join a team that’s in the hunt for what every guy plays for. “It’s bittersweet, you know? I really enjoyed my time in Toronto being a hometown kid and playing here and being close to my family and all that stuff,” he said. “So it sucks leaving, but the great part is coming to a team like Pittsburgh and coming to a team that knows how to win and has done it in the past. And just to be able to play in the playoffs, all the things you want as a player that you play for all year long — now I’m getting the opportunity to do those things.”

ACQUIRED Drafted by Penguins in the first round (20th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft.
USA
Invited to attend U.S. Men’s National Team Camp in August 2013 to try out for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
IVORY KEYS When Bennett was young he had
GRAND DEBUT
to make a deal with his parents in order to play hockey. The deal was that he would play an instrument for five years. So from age 8-13 Bennett learned to play the piano.
Scored his first career playoff goal in his first career playoff game on his first career playoff shot May 1, 2013 vs. NY Islanders. He became the first Penguins rookie to score a goal in his first playoff game since Jordan Staal (April 11, 2007 at Ottawa).
BEAU KNOWS BO
Bennett was named Beau after former NFL/MLB star Bo Jackson. When Bennett was born, Jackson had a popular commercial campaign known as “Bo Knows.” Bennett’s parents, Kurt and Louanna, liked the name and gave it to their newborn son.
ROLLER HOCKEY
Began playing roller hockey at the age of three. It wasn’t until he was 15 years old that Bennett played on ice for the first time.
GRANDMA’S INFLUENCE
Bennett has hockey roots that reach into Manitoba, Canada. His grandmother is from Winnipeg and she’s the person that piqued Bennett’s interest in the sport of hockey. Fittingly, Bennett made his NHL debut in Winnipeg against the Jets on Feb. 15, 2013.

Q & A WITH
CHRIS KUNITZ WHO WAS YOUR MOST INFLUENTIAL COACH GROWING UP? I had a couple throughout the years. Minor hockey it was always some of the dads that had helped out. Mike Baron was one who always came to mind. Always gave me that stern demeanor, kind of kept an even keel, something I always tried to learn from his stature. Numerous guys that just add up all the way through. Even up through my college coaches, Bob Daniels. Trying to not change the way guys are, but just let them play their style and give them good support around that makes the team better. WHO ARE SOME PLAYERS YOU’VE TRIED TO EMULATE? I wish I had hands like Patrick Kane but I don’t think you can do those things. Wayne Gretzky in my generation watched him. Steve Yzerman was one, players that you like their character, their work ethic. You can’t really duplicate that skill level for most of us but guys that go out there and work hard every single shift. Guys that made a difference on our team because they were doing the right thing every single night. WHEN DID YOU FIRST START PLAYING HOCKEY? I started skating around maybe two, two and a half. I had two older brothers who played and being from Canada and out in the prairies there’s a lot of outdoor rinks and things, so we played street hockey almost every single day or shot pucks in the backyard. My parents definitely introduced it, but I played a lot in the basement with my brothers and mini sticks and things like that. IF YOU WEREN’T A HOCKEY PLAYER, WHAT CAREER WOULD YOU HAVE? I have a college degree. I have a marketing degree, but I don’t really know how that would play out. I always wanted to be something in hockey, so if it was sports marketing or something like that just to be involved in sports, something I always loved.

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta
HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE:
D.C. DYNAMIC DUO: The
The Panthers acquired one of the most prolific resumes in NHL history when they picked up Jaromir Jagr from the Devils. Jagr arrived in Florida having won two Stanley Cups (1991, 1992), an Olympic Gold Medal (1998), two World Championship Gold Medals (2005, 2010), five Art Ross trophies (1994-95, 199798, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2000-01), a Hart Trophy (1998-99) and three Lester B. Pearson awards (1998-99, 1999-00, 2005-06). Jagr joined the Panthers as the NHL’s active leader in games (1,531), goals (716), assists (1,068), points (1,784), plusminus (plus-283), power-play goals (202), game-winning goals (127) and shots (5,234).
Capitals’ 33-20-10 record through 62 games was forged thanks in large part to plenty of production from Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. Ovechkin led the league in goals (39) and was tied for fifth in points while Backstrom was on top of the league in assists (46) and tied for first in points (64). The pair had combined for 126 points, the highest total for any two teammates in the NHL. They had also combined to score 57 goals, which also ranked first in the league among twosomes.
THIRDPERIOD PROWESS: Anaheim’s 39-17-7 mark through 63 games included a record of 7-0-5 in games that were tied after two periods. The Ducks and Montreal Canadiens were the only NHL teams without a regulation loss in such contests at that juncture. The Ducks were also tied for the league lead with 10 wins in games they trailed after two periods.
184
HITCHCOCK CLIMBS THE LADDER: St. Louis head coach Ken Hitchcock became the ninth bench boss in NHL history to work 1,300 career games on Feb. 24 and the third active head coach to reach that milestone (Joel Quenneville, Lindy Ruff). Hitchcock was closing in on becoming the fourth head coach to win 700 games (697) through the Blues’ first 62 games this season (40-18-4) and had already become the only head coach in NHL history to win 125 games with four franchises (St. Louis, Columbus, Philadelphia and Dallas).

VEGAS BABY, PENGUINS STYLE By: Michelle Crechiolo
On the Penguins team plane, there’s always a deck of cards and a piece of paper and a pen to keep score waiting for Chris Kunitz and Craig Adams whenever they board for a road trip. So they had a lot of practice heading into the first ever Aces & Ice Casino Night presented by Trib Total Media on Feb. 26 at CONSOL Energy Center, where they and the rest of their teammates served as celebrity dealers. The arena was completely transformed. The videoboard was replaced by dainty chandeliers, the nets were replaced by flashing slot machines and instead of Jeff Jimerson serenading the crowd, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra impersonators crooned. The middle of the floor had three casino pits, with each one containing a roulette table, a craps table and several blackjack tables. The event replaced the Penguins’ former charity gala dinner — known as Skates & Plates, which they had been doing since 1986 — as the team’s signature event of the season. Proceeds benefit the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the Mario Lemieux Foundation and the Western PA Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. continued on page 190

“We kind of changed gears a little bit,” said Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation president Dave Soltesz. “We tried to make something a little more fun and provide the ability for the people here to interact with more players. “Now you have the opportunity to move around, play cards at one table, roll the dice at another table or play roulette. All the players are accessible to you at this event.” And the players had a blast. They really got into whatever game they were playing, conversing, laughing, joking and chirping with the people at their tables. Forward Steve Downie was one of the funniest, as it turns out he’s just as intimidating at the blackjack table as he is on the ice. Kidding... kind of. “When he tells you to hit, you’re going to hit,” laughed one of the patrons at his table, Tim O’Brien. “He’s been great. Super friendly, nice. He’s been super entertaining.” As Soltesz put it, they were all cards, so to speak.

RULES CHANGES nhl.com
RULE 1.8
RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.
RULE 23
GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.
RULE 24
PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.
RULE 38
VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198

referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.
RULE 57 TRIPPING
The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)
RULE 76 FACE-OFFS
To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.
RULE 64
DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME
* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.
RULE 85
PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.
RULE 1.9
RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
