SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT

ADAM KNOERZER

Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Season Ticket Location: 202, M, 11-12 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 2013

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? When I moved to Pittsburgh from New York I wanted to make sure I could get to as many games as possible. I’ve been a fan of the team since I was a kid, and as nice as it was catching them in other cities, I wanted to be able to regularly come here in Pittsburgh. WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? I attend mainly with my fiancé. He and I met playing hockey in New York six years ago when he spotted me wearing a Penguins hat during a tournament banquet. The season ticket package is split between four of us. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CURRENT PITTSBURGH PENGUINS PLAYER? Paul Martin. Often overlooked, but always delivering high quality hockey. WHAT CURRENT PLAYER OR TEAM IS YOUR FAVORITE PENGUINS OPPONENT? Although I appreciate a lot of traditional rivalries, I particularly enjoy watching the Penguins play continued on page 6

5

continued from page 5

against the powerhouses of the Western Conference like LA, San Jose and Chicago. Watching the high level of hockey that comes out of those matchups is pretty spectacular when you’ve got a combination of players like Crosby, Malkin, Perry, Kopitar, Hossa and Marleau all out there for these games. HAVE YOU EVER ATTENDED A PENGUINS AWAY GAME? My fiancé and I take a Penguins away game trip every year, and we always went to Rangers and Islanders games when we lived in New York. My fiancé also went to Stockholm when the Penguins were there to kick off the 2008-09 season. In recent years, the trips we’ve done together include LA, Phoenix, Miami, and Chicago. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO WEAR OR BRING TO A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? A jersey (Martin or Kunitz are my usuals) does the trick, but we have an extensive collection of current and former Penguins shirts from Maatta to Gonchar and Fleury to Satan in case we feel like something different. DO YOU PLAY HOCKEY? Yes, as mentioned earlier, Adam, his fiancé Mike, and an African penguin at Boulders Beach, South Africa. my fiancé and I met playing in New York. Since moving to Pittsburgh, we founded Pittsburgh Gay and Lesbian Hockey and currently play at Pittsburgh Ice Arena in New Kensington. Our next project is getting our niece and nephews on skates. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE STORIES OR FAVORITE EXPERIENCES SINCE BECOMING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? Although it hasn’t happened yet, my fiancé and I are excited that we will be getting married in the Lexus Club at CONSOL Energy Center this spring!

NOTES By: Bob Grove

THE SERIES [VS] BRUINS

On March 14, the Penguins host the Boston Bruins, the middle game of a three-game homestand that began with the March 12 game against Edmonton. . . The teams have split their first two games this season, with the Penguins earning a 3-2 victory in Boston on Nov. 24 when Evgeni Malkin’s second goal of the game 32 seconds into overtime gave Pittsburgh a 3-2 victory. Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists in that game. . . Here on Jan. 7, the Bruins claimed their own road OT victory when Patrice Bergeron scored his second goal of the game at 2:43 for a 3-2 win, with Tuukka Rask making 37 saves for the Bruins. . . Pittsburgh has lost three of its last four games against Boston after reeling off seven consecutive victories over the Bruins. . . Three of the last four games between the teams were decided in overtime. . . Boston is 1-for-10 on the power play in the last five games against Pittsburgh. . . The Penguins have scored first in eight of the last 11 games against the Bruins. . . The Penguins have points in five straight home games against Boston (4-0-1) since a 3-1 loss on Dec. 5, 2011. continued on page 10

THE SERIES [VS] RED WINGS

On March 15, the Penguins host the Detroit Red Wings, against whom Pittsburgh has earned points in five consecutive games (3-0-2) and seven of the last eight games (5-1-2). . . This is the third and final meeting of the teams in the regular season. In Detroit on Oct. 23, Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall scored in a 2:00 span of the final 2:39 with the goaltender pulled, and then the Wings earned a 4-3 victory on Justin Abdelkader’s goal at 4:16 of overtime. . . Here on Feb. 11, Patric Hornqvist scored one goal and set up another while Marc-Andre Fleury made 23 saves in a 4-1 Pittsburgh victory. The Penguins scored twice in the opening 12 minutes of the game and added two more goals in the opening eight minutes of the second period. . . The teams have alternated wins and losses over their last six games. . . The Penguins are 4-1-0 in their last five games against Detroit here in Pittsburgh, where the Red Wings have scored more than three goals only once in the past 12 years. . . This weekend marks the 57th time the Penguins have played at home on consecutive days and the second time this season. Pittsburgh beat Tampa Bay on Jan. 2 (6-3) and lost to Montreal the next night (1-4). The last time the Penguins swept both games was March 16, 2013 vs. NY Rangers (3-0) and the next night vs. Boston (2-1). Pittsburgh has swept 17 times. . . Pittsburgh had won six of its last seven games before completing a four-game Western trip in San Jose on March 9, earning road victories on back-to-back nights in Anaheim (5-2) and Los Angeles (1-0) . The latter game was Pittsburgh’s ninth shutout of the season (all by Fleury), matching the team record set in 1998-99. . . Malkin began the week fourth in NHL scoring with 67 points, while Crosby was fifth with 66. . . Patric Hornqvist’s first career overtime goal — his seventh goal in seven games — was the winner in Los Angeles, where Fleury made 31 saves for the first Pittsburgh shutout in Los Angeles since Les Binkley made 20 saves in a 2-0 win on December 10, 1969. That was also the first 1-0 OT road victory in team history. . . Pittsburgh took a two-game home winning streak into the meeting with Edmonton on Thursday. . . The Penguins had won just three of their last 10 afternoon games heading into this weekend.

LESSONS

LEARNED By: Mike Prisuta

A six-month exercise that Sidney Crosby has referred to as a “process” has hit the stretch drive, which means the time will soon arrive when the lessons learned throughout that regularseason process must be applied with consistency and precision in the postseason. A run of six victories in seven games highlighted by a 1-0 overtime triumph on March 7 at Los Angeles suggested the Penguins have been paying attention to their lessons and to their details. That win over the defending Stanley Cup champions was particularly revealing, potentially, and might prove particularly beneficial when the Penguins find themselves in such a grinding, low-scoring, playoff-type game in the playoffs. “We’re more known to win 5-4,” winger Patric Hornqvist pointed out after netting the game-winning goal in LA. “I think teams don’t think we can play a physical team. [Against the Kings] everybody showed up, we played hard for each other. “Now we know we can play against anyone. That builds some confidence for sure in the group.” Added Crosby: “We were pretty solid all the way through.” The details of surviving such a physical encounter went beyond matching the opposition hit for hit. continued on page 24

continued from page 23

Head coach Mike Johnston’s objective in such situations is to fight through checks more than it is to deliver them. “We have to fight through,” Johnston emphasized. “We have to roll off checks. That’s more of our mindset, to have that second battle after the hit.” The thought process must also include everyone intending to contribute. When the lineup is healthy and available the Penguins believe they’re capable of coming at teams in waves. They showed themselves, and perhaps the rest of the NHL, how effective they can be when that’s happening during a 5-2 win on March 6 at Anaheim. “With the exception of power plays and penalty kills we were really able to roll four lines and three sets of ‘D,’” defenseman Ben Lovejoy said. “When you’re doing that everybody’s involved, everybody’s into the game, you’re comfortable. “You’re out there with the ability to make plays. You’re not just trying to shovel the puck and get off [the ice].” Failure can and at times has been educational for the Penguins as they continue to hone their collective postseason game. That run of six victories in seven tries from Feb. 21 through March 7 included a 3-1 loss on March 4 at Colorado during which the Penguins succumbed to some recognizable bad habits and paid a familiar price. “We made some mistakes defensively,” center Brandon Sutter admitted. “Not coming back [into the defensive end] and doing the right things as forwards, gave [the Avalanche] a few chances off that and that’s where they got their momentum.” The issue at the other end, Sutter said, was “trying to do too much with the puck, trying to be fancy. That’s always our Achilles’ continued on page 26

heel. When we get the puck in [the offensive zone] and make plays we’re a good team. When we try to make everything fancy and a one-on-one game we’re not very good.” The specifics of play-making have been and will continue to be emphasized. It’ll be about more than moving their feet in the postseason, and the Penguins are well aware of that absolute. Efficiency of execution with the puck will be as essential as energy level and effort. “To get shots you have to execute in your [defensive] zone, through the neutral zone and sustain pressure offensively,” Crosby said. “It’s one thing to move your feet. But when you’re making plays and moving the puck quickly it doesn’t matter how fast you’re skating.” The right collective mindset likewise matters. The Penguins exhibited a firm grasp of that while in bounceback mode in Anaheim after the poor performance in Colorado. “If they’re in a situation where you haven’t played your best game, to come out and play a better game, especially against a top team, that’s a good sign for our group,” Johnston said after the Ducks had been successfully hunted. In Los Angeles the challenge was to put together another winning effort against another top-caliber opponent in the second game of a back-to-back scenario. “That’s a tough back-to-back,” Johnston acknowledged. “The biggest thing for me was we stuck with it.”

It’s one thing to move your feet. But when you’re making plays and moving the puck quickly it doesn’t matter how fast you’re skating. Sidney Crosby

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

During that time his team won four straight conference championships. Johnston’s teams are known for their offensive prowess — during his six seasons with Portland, his team’s goals for total rose each year from 176 in 2008-09 to a league-leading 338 in ‘13-14. Johnston also served two NHL stints as assistant/associate coach of the Vancouver Canucks (1999-06) and associate coach of the Los Angeles Kings (2006-08). Our Pittsburgh roots run deep, and so does our commitment to giving back to the place we call home. And because we bring innovative coatings and glass products to CONSOL Energy Center, we’re proud to be a part of every game. To see what other winning color formulas we’re bringing to the surface, visit ppg.com.

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

61

BOB GROVE

STUDIO HOST — PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK

After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

STEVE KOLBE

PENGUINS RADIO 24/7 HOST— PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK

Steve Kolbe enters his second season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kolbe spent 14 seasons (1997-2011) as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Washington Capitals, broadcasting over 1,100 games. Kolbe broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 and the NHL Winter Classic in 2011, and he was featured on the NHL Network’s documentary Voices in 2008. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Kolbe has over 25 years of broadcasting experience, and most recently has been a co-host of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) as well as talk show host for Major League Baseball coverage and NHL insider on CBS Radio 105.7 in Baltimore. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ELITE

2015-16 TRYOUTS

Starting in 2015-16, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ official youth hockey program will expand to two teams in the 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, and 2001 birth years for boys and the U10 and U12 age classifications for the girls teams. “With the explosion in youth hockey interest and the opening of the world class UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex this summer in Cranberry, we felt it was the perfect time to expand our program and create opportunities for more young players to utilize this great facility,” said Rich Hixon, executive director of strategic planning for the Pittsburgh Penguins and vice president of the Penguins Elite Amateur Hockey Association. “They also will have access to the outstanding coaches and trainers who will work at the facility. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in the late summer, will be the new home and headquarters of Penguins Elite. Games, practices, specialized training sessions and tournaments will take place at the new facility, which will also be the practice home of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The two teams — Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and the Pittsburgh Penguins Black — will both play AAA schedules. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will continue to play a full schedule of games and showcase events against the most elite programs in North America. The Pittsburgh Penguins Black teams will play a highlycompetitive AAA schedule, featuring games and tournaments designed to maximize each player’s development. Penguins Elite will continue to field one team in the midget age groups for boys (U15, U16, and U18) and the U14, U16, and U19 age classifications for the girls program. Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”

said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. For more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

HOCKEY IS FOR

EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

DRAFT CLASS

KASPERI KAPANEN

Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.

SAM LAFFERTY

Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

ANTHONY ANGELLO

Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.

JADEN LINDO

Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

JEFF TAYLOR

Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. Taylor led all Union rookie blueliners in scoring with 16 points. Beyond the Numbers: Last season Jeff was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team as an 18-year-old true freshman.

PROJECT

POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settler’s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS PROFILE

EVGENI

MALKIN By: Mark Madden

The Penguins lost at home to Columbus, 2-1, on Feb. 19. It was the Penguins’ third consecutive defeat, and second straight at home. The next day, after practice, center Evgeni Malkin gave his “state of the Penguins” address. “When you lose a couple games and aren’t playing right, everyone gets nervous: Coaches, players, the organization,” Malkin said. “[The situation is] not bad, but it’s not good. We know we can come back. “I believe this team has good guys and good players. We need to support each other, relax and we’ll be back.” Those are wise, mature words. But actions speak louder. After delivering that verbiage, Malkin took to the ice and delivered. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Malkin racked up six goals and seven assists in his next six games, going plus-6 as the Penguins won five of those contests. Malkin had three-point games in victories over Florida, Washington and Columbus, and got a goal and assist March 6 as the Penguins posted an impressive 5-2 win at Anaheim. The Ducks entered that game with the most points in the NHL. continued on page 162

continued from page 161

Coach Mike Johnston praised Malkin’s dominance after the Penguins’ 5-3 home win over Columbus on March 1. The Magnitogorsk, Russia native had two goals and an assist and was named the game’s No. 1 star. “There was a time, two weeks ago, when Geno had a little bit of a lapse in his game,” Johnston said. “Other than that, I have not seen it all year. I’ve seen a lot of intensity, and the more emotion and intensity he has, the better his game is. “You can see it early in the game with him: He gets out there, he’s skating, he’s hard on loose pucks, he’s lifting sticks. When he’s engaged like that, he can be a dominant player, as he was tonight.” Malkin, 29, left the win at Anaheim tied for the NHL scoring lead with 28 goals and 39 assists in 59 games. Malkin was part of a four-player logjam at the top of the stats, knotted at 67 points with Washington’s Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom and the New York Islanders’ John Tavares. Malkin has notched a disproportionate amount of backhand goals lately. Some credit goes to a stick Malkin got from rookie defenseman Derrick Pouliot. “The last three games, I scored three goals backhand because I changed my stick,” Malkin said after the March 1 win vs. Columbus. “I changed my curve. I took Pouliot’s stick. It’s a little bit straighter, and it’s working, we see. I like it because you can shoot both sides. The backhand, it’s easy, too.” “If I have a chance on my backhand now, I know it’s a good chance to score. I try to shoot every time when I have the puck close to the net on my backhand.” Pouliot is glad to see his stick do well. “It’s pretty amazing to see,” said Pouliot. “He just goes out there and scores a couple goals. He’s been scoring a lot lately with it. So it’s pretty cool how he can just kind of pick up a stick when it’s not what he’s used to, and do well with it.” Malkin’s hot streak had the Penguins set to make a run at the Metropolitan Division title as the NHL season entered the home stretch. “The [biggest] part is to stay positive and support each other,” Malkin said. “Work hard in practice. We know we’re a good team. We know we can play better. Every game, make small steps forward. Heads-up play, and stay positive. “We have a good team. We will go play in the playoffs, and have a chance to play in the Stanley Cup Final. If we play right, we win.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

LOVEJOY SHOCKED,

EXCITED TO RETURN TO PENGUINS By: Michelle Crechiolo

With the Penguins looking to add experience to their blue line before the trade deadline arrived, general manager Jim Rutherford spent much of that day with his staff discussing one particular player they felt could help bring that. Defenseman Ben Lovejoy originally signed with Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent out of Dartmouth College and went on to skate in 98 NHL games (along with nine postseason contests) with the Penguins from 2008-13. While he was a good young player for the Penguins, Lovejoy was traded to Anaheim during the lockoutshortened season because of the depth the Penguins had on the blue line that year. The Ducks had more room to give Lovejoy a much bigger role, and as a result he matured into a solid, all-around veteran defender — one the Penguins felt strongly about bringing back. “We had a very, very long meeting this morning and this afternoon because most of these people were here when Ben was

here before,” Rutherford said. “He was a young guy, still feeling his way in the league. And the Penguins, at that point in time, had a lot of defensemen so they could afford to move him. “In the meantime, since he’s gone to Anaheim, he’s really blossomed and developed into a very solid, consistent defender and our guys felt very strong about reacquiring this player.” So Rutherford did. Right before the trade deadline hit at 3 p.m. on March 2, he swung a deal to bring Lovejoy back to Pittsburgh in exchange for fellow defenseman Simon Despres. “I was shocked when I learned I was coming back to Pittsburgh. I’m very excited,” said the 31-year-old defenseman, whose contract runs through the 2015-16 season. “I loved being a Penguin. I loved living there for three years. I did my best to be a part of the city; I did my best to fill a role on the hockey team. I feel like during my time in Anaheim, I was given a ton more responsibility. I feel like my game has grown by leaps and bounds and I look forward to coming back and being a part of such a great team once again.” It means a lot to Lovejoy that Penguins management thinks so highly of him and wanted to add him back to their group. “I tried to be a good human being and a good hockey player when I was in Pittsburgh,” he said. “I think that some guys leave town and can bad-mouth their situation, but I have nothing but respect for how I was shocked I was treated my first time when I learned I around. I gave the Penguins five and a half years of was coming back everything I had. I was so to Pittsburgh. I’m proud to be a Penguin. I was so proud to be in the NHL.” very excited. Lovejoy said the reason Ben Lovejoy for his growth in Anaheim — where he was capable of handling top-four (sometimes top-pair) minutes as well as powerplay time — was simple. “I just had more of an opportunity,” Lovejoy said. “That opportunity at that time wasn’t there with the Penguins. I understood that. It wasn’t anything I was angry about. I always thought and hoped I could do more, but I didn’t know. And Bruce continued on page 177

Boudreau and Bob Murray gave me an opportunity in Anaheim to really grow my game. I had a ton of responsibility and got a ton of ice time and I will be forever grateful.” Lovejoy found out about the trade when he picked up his phone after practice that Monday and saw he had about 15 text messages from Pittsburgh area codes — from friends in the area and his new (old) teammates. “I have heard from a lot of teammates, both those that are still with the Penguins and those that I used to play with on the Pens,” he said. “I spent five and a half years in the Penguins system. I feel like when I arrived in Wilkes-Barre, I was a fresh-faced little boy. And I truly feel like the Penguins, when I left, that it was like leaving my high school or leaving my college. I feel like they were my alma mater. I very much look forward to coming back.” To make an already emotional time even more intense, Lovejoy faced his former team just four days after the trade when the Ducks hosted the Penguins on March 6. “I took an Uber from my house in Newport Beach this morning, and I got emotional on the drive in,” he said following that morning’s game-day skate. “I think the driver got a little weirded out. … This place was so good to me. I have nothing but good things to say about Anaheim. I really want to beat them tonight.” And that’s what Lovejoy and the Penguins did, as they skated to an emphatic 5-2 victory over Anaheim that night. “That was awesome,” Lovejoy said afterward before jokingly adding, “The boys really rallied around me [laughs]. … I think my new team really showed up tonight and is hard to play against with that much speed throughout the lineup. It was a lot of fun.”

Q & A WITH

DANIEL WINNIK By: Haley Sawyer

The Penguins acquired forward Daniel Winnik from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Zach Sill, a 2015 fourth-round draft pick and a 2016 second-round draft pick on Feb. 25. “This was an important one for us,” Penguins general Jim Rutherford said of the deal. “He’s a guy that will fit in our top nine. He gives us more balance and more depth up front. Something we were looking for. He’s had a very good year, one of the best in his career. He’s a top penalty killer in this league.” Winnik, 30, was originally drafted by Arizona in the ninth round (265th overall) of the 2004 NHL Draft and has played in over 550 games with the Coyotes, Colorado, San Jose, Anaheim, Toronto and now Pittsburgh. Shortly after the trade, Winnik took the time to answer a few questions about what the transition to his new team has been like. WHAT SETS THE PENGUINS APART FROM THE OTHER NHL TEAMS YOU’VE BEEN WITH IN YOUR CAREER? First off, CONSOL Energy Center probably has the nicest room I’ve ever been in. That’s something that’s really truly nice and so far, what I’ve seen it’s just a top-notch organization. I’ve been on a couple of those so far, but it’s nice to get traded to another one. ARE YOUR TWO BULLDOGS IN PITTSBURGH WITH YOU? They’re back in Toronto with my parents, just because of the upcoming road trip. We would’ve had to put them in a shelter for a week or so, so we thought it was best to just leave them there. HOW’S THE ADJUSTMENT MOVING FROM TORONTO TO HERE? I’m used to it at this point in my career. I’ve moved around a lot and I think it’s probably a bigger adjustment for my fiancé. But she’s liking Pittsburgh so far and hopefully we’re able to find an apartment to move into.

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta

COMEBACKS UNLIKELY: The Blackhawks’ 39-21-5 record through 65 games included marks of 22-2-0 when leading after the first period, 21-0-0 when leading after the second period and 27-7-2 when scoring the first goal.

FOUR SCORE AND VICTORY AWAITS: The Rangers scored at least four goals (including shootout winners) in eight of their last 12 games and 27 times overall on the way to a 39-17-7 showing through 63 games. In doing so New York upped its record to 111-1-2 in its last 114 regularseason games when getting four or more goals.

WILD TIMES: Minnesota’s 79 points through 65 games were the most it had ever amassed at that juncture of a season in team history. The Wild got there thanks in part to producing an NHL-best 33 points in 19 games after the All-Star break (16-2-1) and 36 points since Jan. 15, the top performance in the league in that span (18-3-2).

184

GRAND NIGHT: Colorado LW Alex Tanguay appeared in his 1,000th NHL game when he suited up against the Penguins on March 4. Tanguay became the second Avalanche player to play in his 1,000th career game this season (D Brad Stuart did so on Dec. 18 against the Penguins) and joined Stuart, Adam Foote, Todd Gill, Milan Hejduk, Ian Laperriere, Patrick Roy and Joe Sakic among players who have done so while playing for the Avalanche.

EARNING HIS KEEP: New Jersey G Cory Schneider appeared in 57 of the Devils’ first 65 games and led the league in shots against (1,643) and saves (1,524) in that span. Schneider was second in the NHL in games (57), starts (56) and minutes (3,272), third in save percentage (.928) and fifth in goal-against average (2.18). His success through the first 65 games this season helped Schneider rank first among NHL netminders that had played in at least 100 games since 2010-11 with a 2.09 GAA (ahead of the Rangers’ Henrik Lundqvist, 2.18) and with a .928 SV% (ahead of Tuukka Rask, .925).

VEGAS BABY, PENGUINS STYLE By: Michelle Crechiolo

On the Penguins team plane, there’s always a deck of cards and a piece of paper and a pen to keep score waiting for Chris Kunitz and Craig Adams whenever they board for a road trip. So they had a lot of practice heading into the first ever Aces & Ice Casino Night presented by Trib Total Media on Feb. 26 at CONSOL Energy Center, where they and the rest of their teammates served as celebrity dealers. The arena was completely transformed. The videoboard was replaced by dainty chandeliers, the nets were replaced by flashing slot machines and instead of Jeff Jimerson serenading the crowd, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra impersonators crooned. The middle of the floor had three casino pits, with each one containing a roulette table, a craps table and several blackjack tables. The event replaced the Penguins’ former charity gala dinner — known as Skates & Plates, which they had been doing since 1986 — as the team’s signature event of the season. Proceeds benefit the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the Mario Lemieux Foundation and the Western PA Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. continued on page 190

“We kind of changed gears a little bit,” said Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation president Dave Soltesz. “We tried to make something a little more fun and provide the ability for the people here to interact with more players. “Now you have the opportunity to move around, play cards at one table, roll the dice at another table or play roulette. All the players are accessible to you at this event.” And the players had a blast. They really got into whatever game they were playing, conversing, laughing, joking and chirping with the people at their tables. Forward Steve Downie was one of the funniest, as it turns out he’s just as intimidating at the blackjack table as he is on the ice. Kidding... kind of. “When he tells you to hit, you’re going to hit,” laughed one of the patrons at his table, Tim O’Brien. “He’s been great. Super friendly, nice. He’s been super entertaining.” As Soltesz put it, they were all cards, so to speak.

referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.

RULE 57 TRIPPING

The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)

RULE 76 FACE-OFFS

To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.

RULE 64

DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME

* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.

RULE 85

PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.

RULE 1.9

RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
