SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT

PATRICK KAHLE

Hometown: Curllsville, PA Season Ticket Location: 212, B, 1-2 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 1994

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? I was just out of college after watching two Stanley Cup wins during my time at Clarion University. The ups and downs of both of those runs locked me in as a lifetime fan. My friend and Sigma Chi brother, Jeff Walch, and I decided to share a season ticket package so that we could continue to see each other after graduation. WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? DO YOU SHARE YOUR TICKET PACKAGE? I go with many different people. I attend with Jeff Walch, who I share my ticket package with, my wife Diane, my five-year-old son Billy and other friends from work, college or high school. HAVE YOU EVER ATTENDED A PENGUINS AWAY GAME? I’ve been to hockey games in Buffalo, New Jersey, Dallas and Tampa Bay. I also attended the first Winter Classic at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo and the one at Heinz Field. continued on page 6

5

continued from page 5

DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME RITUALS WHEN ATTENDING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? If we are given a rally towel during playoff games, we always place them over the back of the seats in front of us and if things go well, they stay there. If not, we flip them over, turn them around… anything to “rally” the boys.

Patrick’s wife, Diane, and their son, Billy.

AS A SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHERISHED PENGUINS MEMORY? I have a few; all of the Stanley Cup championships, although none clinched at home; coming back from being down 3-1 against the Caps and Ron Francis carrying the team when 66 was out; Mario’s first retirement and his breakaway goal late in that game against the Flyers in the Igloo; and Mario’s return against the Maple Leafs and the buzz in the building. DO YOU PLAY HOCKEY? DO YOU HAVE ANY CHILDREN THAT PLAY HOCKEY? I play on the ponds here in Clarion County and in backyard rinks that we build when it’s cold. My now five-year-old son started skating last year! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? I think the 50/50 raffles are great. Those drawings help local organizations and give fans a chance to win a lot of cash. It’s a cool idea. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE STORIES OR FAVORITE EXPERIENCES SINCE BECOMING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? We have been there through the good times and the bad times and we have enjoyed it all. I loved every game, even that Game Seven loss to the Habs in 2010. The game of hockey is unlike any other game and the players are unlike any other athletes in the world. It is by far my favorite live sport to watch.

THE PENGUINS

Pittsburgh snapped a four-game losing streak with its 3-1 win in Arizona on March 21, then returned home to face St. Louis on March 24 and start a stretch of five games in which it plays four times at home. The Penguins went into that game against St. Louis trailing the New York Islanders by two points for second place in the Metropolitan Division while holding a two-point lead over fourth-place Washington. . . Sidney Crosby went into the game against the Blues leading the NHL in scoring with 74 points. . . Pittsburgh had scored a power play goal in two straight games after getting one in the win over the Coyotes. . . The Penguins’ penalty killers, ranked second in the NHL (85.6 percent) to Minnesota as this week began, had stopped 17 straight on the road and 26 of their last 29 overall before hosting the Blues. . . Winnik’s goal in Arizona was his first in a Pittsburgh uniform. . . The Penguins were hoping to have Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist back in the lineup by the end of the month after both missed the team’s recent three-game road trip. . . Pittsburgh, which played in Carolina on March 26, will play four of its final five regular-season games on the road.

PENGUINS COLLEGE

PROSPECTS By: Mike Prisuta

The suggestion from Tom Fitzgerald is the same whether a college prospect’s season ended in a conference playoff, the NCAA Tournament or the Frozen Four: Don’t sleep in the spring. “They all have to get stronger,” said Fitzgerald, an assistant general manager with the Penguins and a guy whose eyes have been on the organization’s NCAA draftees during the 2014-15 season. “The advice I’ve given kids is don’t throw away the spring workouts. “That’s when you’ll make your hay so you can go into the summer full speed ahead.” Following is Fitzgerald’s assessment of where the Penguins’ prospects stand heading into that all-important spring stage of their continued development:

“I’m really happy with where he’s at. He’s grown and he’s matured. He’s not polished yet. He needs to see his skating, explosiveness and strength continue to improve. He’s part of a real good team, that’s important. He plays good minutes and he’s leaned on for the power play and the penalty kill. We’ve always said he’s a marathoner. Let him finish the marathon [and play four seasons in college].”

wing. He needs to get stronger and faster and utilize the skill set and hockey sense that he has. He’s on the marathon track. He has two years of eligibility remaining and he knows exactly how we feel. He needs to be heavier on puck, develop puck-protection skills.”

F, University of Nebraska-Omaha, Sophomore, 5-10, 167, Third round (77th overall), 2013. 2014-15 stats through 33 GP: 12-23-35. Career stats through 70 GP: 19-50-69.

“He had a great year producing whether playing wing or center. He played 4-on-4, first power play, first penalty kill, heavy on face-offs. He’s a cerebral player, he’s not afraid of traffic and the puck just seems to follow him around. He has the potential to grow but two inches [of additional height] isn’t going to make him a better hockey player. More girth and lower-body strength so that he won’t get pushed off pucks by bigger defensemen, that’s what’s going to make him a better hockey player. He comes from a hockey family and he lives day-to-day, he’s not looking ahead.”

TROY JOSEPHS F, Clarkson University, Sophomore, 6-1, 184, Sophomore, Seventh round (209th overall), 2013. 2014-15 stats through 36 GP: 3-14-17. Career stats through 69 GP: 5-17-22.

“He needs to work on face-offs and work on his wall play. He has a heavy body and he can skate. He’s gotta polish up his hands and his puck skills can improve. Soften up those hands and the transition into high-traffic areas.”

“I saw him play when they lost to Providence, 10-2, and I actually thought he played really well. He’s a physical player with good mobility and average puck skills. When he simplifies his game, when he understands that sometimes less is more and you don’t have to run around looking for that big hit, he’s a good defenseman. He was playing wing at one point because of some of the mental mistakes he was making and he was taking a lot of penalties. He did better after moving back to defense and will develop as UConn gets better as a team.”

“He had a fantastic year. He’s a quiet defenseman who doesn’t complicate things. When he gets it, he gets it moving. When he gets it at the point, he gets it on the net. He’s a very smart player. It’ll be a big spring and a big summer for him to get bigger and stronger.”

The advice I’ve given kids is don’t throw away the spring workouts. Tom Fitzgerald

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. MIKE JOHNSTON HEAD COACH

Mike Johnston is in his first season as head coach of the Penguins after being named to his position on June 25, 2014. During that time his team won four straight conference championships. Johnston’s teams are known for their offensive prowess — during his six seasons with Portland, his team’s goals for total rose each year from 176 in 2008-09 to a league-leading 338 in ‘13-14. Johnston also served two NHL stints as assistant/associate coach of the Vancouver Canucks (1999-06) and associate coach of the Los Angeles Kings (2006-08). MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ELITE

2015-16 TRYOUTS

Starting in 2015-16, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ official youth hockey program will expand to two teams in the 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, and 2001 birth years for boys and the U10 and U12 age classifications for the girls teams. “With the explosion in youth hockey interest and the opening of the world class UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex this summer in Cranberry, we felt it was the perfect time to expand our program and create opportunities for more young players to utilize this great facility,” said Rich Hixon, executive director of strategic planning for the Pittsburgh Penguins and vice president of the Penguins Elite Amateur Hockey Association. “They also will have access to the outstanding coaches and trainers who will work at the facility. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in the late summer, will be the new home and headquarters of Penguins Elite. Games, practices, specialized training sessions and tournaments will take place at the new facility, which will also be the practice home of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The two teams — Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and the Pittsburgh Penguins Black — will both play AAA schedules. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will continue to play a full schedule of games and showcase events against the most elite programs in North America. The Pittsburgh Penguins Black teams will play a highlycompetitive AAA schedule, featuring games and tournaments designed to maximize each player’s development. Penguins Elite will continue to field one team in the midget age groups for boys (U15, U16, and U18) and the U14, U16, and U19 age classifications for the girls program. For more information please visit pittsburghpenguinselite.com.

Coming August 2015, the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex is just what you’d expect from a partnership between world-class organizations. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”

said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. For more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

HOCKEY IS FOR

EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

DRAFT CLASS

KASPERI KAPANEN

Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.

SAM LAFFERTY

Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

ANTHONY ANGELLO

Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.

JADEN LINDO

Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

JEFF TAYLOR

Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. Taylor led all Union rookie blueliners in scoring with 16 points. Beyond the Numbers: Last season Jeff was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team as an 18-year-old true freshman.

PROJECT

POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settler’s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS PROFILE

BEN

LOVEJOY By: Mark Madden

In Anaheim, Ducks fans expect the team to win the Stanley Cup. In Pittsburgh, Penguins fans expect the team to win the Stanley Cup. So when Ben Lovejoy got traded from the former to the latter on March 2, the 6-foot-1, 206-pound defenseman found himself heading to a similar setting as he crossed the continent. “Very similar,” said Lovejoy, 31. “The expectation is always to win. “In Pittsburgh, we have two of the best players in the world, in their primes. We have an amazing goalie, and a Norris Trophy [best defenseman] candidate. The pressure here is huge. “It’s the same way in Anaheim. The Ducks’ arch-rival [the Los Angeles Kings] has won two of the last three Stanley Cups, and they play in the same media market. The Ducks have had ultra-successful regular seasons, but haven’t been able to win a Cup since 2007. “There’s a lot of pressure. But it’s fun to be in those markets where winning is expected.” If the situations are similar, at least Lovejoy is coming to a situation that is also quite familiar. The Dartmouth College product was part of the Penguins’ system from 2007 until he was traded to Anaheim on Feb. 6, 2013. Lovejoy played 98 NHL games with the Penguins during his first tenure. continued on page 162

161

continued from page 161

“A guy in my situation is never surprised when he’s traded,” Lovejoy said. “I’m not a guy that has a no-movement clause. “So, it’s always a possibility. But it’s still a shock, and to be traded back to Pittsburgh was definitely a shock. I loved my time here, but I thought that door was closed. I don’t know why — I just thought I’d never be back. If I got traded, I thought it would be to 28 other teams first. “But once it happened, and it sank in, there’s no place I’d rather be.” Lovejoy played 40 games with the Ducks this season, posting a goal and 11 assists while going plus-3. The New Hampshire native got an assist and was minus-1 in his first nine games back with the Penguins. Management feels Lovejoy’s game evolved during his time in Anaheim. Lovejoy frequently partnered Cam Fowler with the Ducks. Fowler has a skill set similar to Derrick Pouliot’s, and Lovejoy spent the early days of his return to Pittsburgh skating alongside the Penguins’ rookie defenseman. Lovejoy noted how things in Pittsburgh hadn’t changed much since he left: “A lot of the guys are still the same, a lot of the front office is still the same, everybody at CONSOL [Energy Center] is the same, and the media is still the same.” But the coaching staff has changed. Lovejoy played for Dan Bylsma during his first stint with the Penguins. Mike Johnston is the bench boss now. “Systems among coaches change a lot,” Lovejoy said. “Hockey is a game that isn’t necessarily scripted, but you always have an idea of the play. My game is in the defensive zone. There’s where I’m comfortable. I like to play D. “We are playing a very smart system right now. It’s really limiting our time in the defensive zone. We have two guys on the one [opponent] in the corner, and they’re super aggressive trying to strip the puck. The other defenseman doesn’t hang in the high slot trying to protect. He’s aggressively taking away the pass behind the net. “We cut off options, and I think it’s really smart. We’re spending very little time in the defensive zone. When you do that, you’re going to win hockey games.” That’s all Lovejoy wants to do. “In places like Pittsburgh, you go out every night expecting to win,” Lovejoy said. “That’s why you play the game. You always want a chance to win the Stanley Cup. “My whole [NHL] career, my teams have always made the playoffs. I’ve been so lucky to be a part of good teams. That’s continuing here in Pittsburgh. I know there are high expectations. There should be.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

LETANG DESERVING OF

MASTERTON AWARD By: Sam Kasan

When Penguins defenseman Christian Ehrhoff was a late scratch in Pittsburgh’s March 21st 3-1 victory against Arizona, Pittsburgh was forced to play with only five blueliners for an entire game. So the team did what it has done all season — leaned heavily on Kris Letang. Letang set a new season high with 31:09 minutes of ice time, chipped in with his career-high 43rd assist and helped the Penguins snap a four-game losing streak. In other words, it was just another game in the 2014-15 season for Letang. The Penguins coaching staff has relied on Letang all season, and with good reason. He’s not only been the team’s best defenseman, he may be the best defenseman in the entire National Hockey League. As of March 23rd Letang, 27, ranked second among all NHL defensemen with 54 points and tops all league blueliners with 43 helpers. He also ranks eighth in the NHL with 25:34 minutes played per game. Letang may find himself in Las Vegas this summer for the league’s annual awards as a Norris Trophy nominee as best NHL Defenseman. With everything he’s done so far, it’s amazing to think that just over a year ago Letang suffered a stroke and his hockey future was clouded with uncertainty.

174

“I feel really good about this year, especially after last year with everything that happened,” Letang said. “All the work I put in this summer and the work the doctors did for me, it turned out that way. I was not expecting to have a year like that, but it all came together.” Due to Letang’s ability not only to return from the stroke, but to also become one of the most elite players at his position, he was nominated by the Pittsburgh Chapter of Professional Hockey Writers Association as the team’s Masterton Trophy nominee. The Masterton Trophy is given out yearly by the NHL to the player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” “It’s huge for me. Last year I was just trying to come back and play hockey. This year I want to be back to the level I was playing before and be a guy that will make an impact on my team,” Letang said. “That’s why I worked really hard this summer with the doctors, with trainers, just to get back to what I’m capable of doing.” Letang no doubt fits that bill. In fact, after doctors diagnosed him with a stroke, the first thing he asked them was, “When will I be able to play hockey again?” It took Letang only 10 weeks to return to the ice after his stroke. And he instantly played as if nothing had ever happened. But despite his play on the ice, Letang is still dealing with issues from the stroke every day. And it’s something he will deal with for the rest of his life. “I’ll stay on medication and make sure my blood stays thin so I don’t have a chance for another clot,” said Letang, who also has had a small hole in his heart since birth. “I get tired faster. There are a lot of little details that people can’t really see. You know your body so well and you’re used to something and then it changes.

The Masterton Trophy is given out yearly by the NHL to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. continued on page 177

You see differently. You get dizzy. It’s just getting used to the new me, with the help of doctors making it all possible.” Letang was only 26 years old and among the best conditioned athletes in his profession when he suffered the stroke in January 2014. He has used his situation to help raise heart awareness. He was the co-chair of the 2014 Pittsburgh Heart Walk this past November and helped raise over $6,500 for the event. Over the summer Letang worked closely with doctors to change his routine, particularly getting more rest, to help him return to form on the ice. Letang isn’t just the player he was before the stroke. He’s better. “It is crazy,” Letang said. “Last year I would talk with my family and my wife and thinking I just want to play hockey. Hockey is my life. Now I’ve changed perspective. This summer I wanted to be back to where I was. I don’t want to just be a hockey player. I want to be the best that I can be.”

Q & A WITH

BEAU BENNETT By: Haley Sawyer

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED IN HOCKEY? Growing up in L.A., [Wayne] Gretzky came to the Kings and made roller hockey a big thing. We used to play in the parking lots of the Great Western Forum. My brother got into it when he was five and we started just skating around the rink. As soon as I was old enough I got into a league and played roller hockey until I was about 16. I had switched between roller and ice starting at nine as well. WHO WERE SOME PLAYERS YOU’VE TRIED TO EMULATE? I’d always watch [Pavel] Datsyuk videos and I’d watch how patient he is with the puck. Just players like that, you watch their patience and puck possession and poise and you realize you have a lot more time than you think. IF YOU WEREN’T PLAYING HOCKEY, WHAT CAREER WOULD YOU HAVE? Probably a sports doctor, like an orthopedic surgeon or something, just because I was really smart in school. I took honors and AP courses and I never wanted the schooling portion to get in the way of my hockey career as far as going to college, so I took schooling really seriously. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT THE RINK? There’s not much to do during the winter, so it’s just hanging out with the guys. In the summer I play a lot of beach volleyball. Me and my friends, that’s our daily routine. I live in Hermosa Beach during the summers. I go home for three and a half months and then come back here. HOW’S LIFE BEEN SINCE YOUR ROOMMATE ROBERT BORTUZZO MOVED OUT? It’s very sad. I talk to myself sometimes. It’s very lonely at my house and I actually cleaned our house for the first time all year just because I was so bored the other day. But I know he’s doing well in St. Louis.

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta

CLIMBING THE LADDER: Colorado winger Jarome Iginla’s team-leading 24th goal this season, which was also his team-leading 50th point, allowed Iginla to pass Larry Murphy and Jeremy Roenick and assume sole possession of 41st place on the NHL’s all-time scoring list (584-633-1,217). Iginla’s sights were next set on Jean Beliveau (507-712-1,219) at No. 40 on the all-time ledger.

HOME-ICE ADVANTAGE: Tampa Bay’s 44-21-7 record through 72 games included a 28-7-1 mark at home. The Lightning led the NHL in home wins and home points (57) at that juncture.

THIRD-PERIOD PROWESS: Anaheim won three straight games despite having trailed in the third period (March 15 against Nashville, March 18 against Los Angeles and March 20 against Colorado). The run improved the Ducks’ NHL-best win total in such situations to 17 (Calgary was second with 11).

40 x 4: Steven Stamkos’ 40th goal this season allowed him to join Washington’s

184

Alex Ovechkin as the only two NHL players to reach the 40-goal plateau four times since Stamkos entered the NHL with Tampa Bay in 2008-09. Stamkos made it to 40 goals this season for the first time since netting 60 in 2008-09.

51 IN A HURRY: Anaheim’s Frederik Andersen became the third-fastest goaltender in NHL history to achieve 51 career wins when he required just 71 decisions to get there (51-15-5). Only Bill Durnan of Montreal (51-9-9 in 69 decisions) and Frank Brimsek of Boston (51-15-4, 70 decisions) made it to 51 wins faster than Andersen. Anderson went 31-10-5 with a 2.36 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage through Anaheim’s first 73 games this season and helped the Ducks amass an NHL-best 99 points, the second-highest total in franchise history through 73 games of a campaign. Anaheim was 47-18-8 for 102 points through 73 games in 2013-14.

DOMINATING DETROIT: Tampa Bay G Ben Bishop posted a 7-1-0 record with a 1.53 GAA and a .943 SV%. and one shutout in his first nine career appearances against the Red Wings.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS HONORED TO PROVIDE

AN ASSIST TO ANIMALS

This season, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Penguins Wives Association teamed up with the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center to create the 2015 Penguins & Paws Charity Pet Calendar. The calendar featured Penguins players away from the rink with their family pets or adoptable animals from the Animal Rescue League Shelter. Proceeds from the sale of the calendar benefited the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center and will help them continue their mission to find homes for our four-legged friends as well as rehabilitate local wildlife. The 2015 Penguins & Paws Charity Pet Calendar raised more than $88,400 and helped each adoptable animal from the Animal Rescue League Shelter featured within the calendar find a loving home. On Thursday, March 12, Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation; Leslie Rutherford, wife of Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford; and Brittney Palmer, fiancÊe of Penguins goaltender Thomas Greiss, presented Ann Yeager, marketing director of the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center, with a check to help the Animal Rescue League’s valuable work in our region. We thank each fan for their purchase of a calendar and help in making this project an overwhelming success!

PENGUINS WIVES HELP TO FEED

LOCAL SCHOOL CHILDREN On Sunday, March 15, Trinity North Elementary School received a huge assist from the Penguins Wives Association. Veronique Fleury, wife of Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, presented Dr. Beth Tully of Trinity North Elementary with a check for her school’s Blessings in a Backpack program. During the holiday season, the Penguins Wives Association continued their tradition of creating holiday baskets for Penguins players and auctioning them online for charity. Each holiday basket was decorated and filled with unique items to showcase individual player’s favorite things, hobbies, interests or hometowns. From this online auction, the Penguins Wives Association’s raised $15,000 for the Blessings in a Backpack program at Trinity North Elementary School. Blessings in a Backpack provides elementary school children who take part in federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Programs with a backpack of food to take home each weekend during the school year. Trinity North Elementary School faces a high percentage of students who require lunch assistance each year and unfortunately could not continue the school’s previous Blessings in a Backpack program. With the donation by the Penguins Wives Association, the program was reinstated and hungry elementary school-aged children at this Washington, Pennsylvania school will have nutritious, easy-to-make meals to sustain them during weekend days when they are not in school and may not have sufficient food at their homes for the entire 2015-16 school year! We thank the Penguins Wives Association for their dedication to such a worthwhile cause and each fan for bidding on the team’s holiday baskets to help make the auction a success!

2014.15 NHL

RULES CHANGES nhl.com

RULE 1.8

RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.

RULE 23

GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.

RULE 24

PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.

RULE 38

VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198

197

continued from page 197

referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.

RULE 57 TRIPPING

The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)

RULE 76 FACE-OFFS

To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.

RULE 64

DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME

* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.

RULE 85

PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.

RULE 1.9

RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).

Upon arrival, guests can arrange for a wheelchair at any entrance of CONSOL Energy Center. Please see a CONSOL Energy Center employee to assist with wheelchair transportation.
