SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT

EDMOND GRANDIZIO

Hometown: Valencia, PA Season Ticket Location: 106, B, 5 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 1967 – Original Season Ticket Holder

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? I loved the sport of hockey the first time I watched a game. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ALL-TIME PITTSBURGH PENGUINS PLAYER? Who else? Mario Lemieux! WHAT CURRENT PLAYER OR TEAM IS YOUR FAVORITE PENGUINS OPPONENT? I really don’t have one, but I like to watch Steven Stamkos. HAVE YOU EVER ATTENDED A PENGUINS AWAY GAME? IF SO, WHERE? Yes, quite a few. I have been in the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, Old Chicago Stadium, Richfield Coliseum in Cleveland, Fab Forum in LA, Oakland Coliseum (home of the Seals), St. Louis Arena and The Spectrum in Philly. Plus I’ve been in other arenas, but the Penguins weren’t playing there at the time, like the Olympia Stadium and Joe Louis Arena in Detroit and the Boston Garden. continued on page 6

5

continued from page 5

AS A SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHERISHED PENGUINS MEMORY? Well that’s easy! There are two lasting memories. One is seeing the Penguins win their very first Stanley Cup in 1991 after many years of uncertainty and bad times. Ed posing in front of the Civic Arena Gate 8 Box Office. I was at the celebration in Point State Park two days later. The other one was on December 31, 1988, when Mario scored five times five different ways, something that may never ever be equaled. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO WEAR OR BRING TO A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? Just a souvenir hat or shirt. DO YOU OWN PITTSBURGH PENGUINS MEMORABILIA OR CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS MEMORABILIA COLLECTOR? I own the medal honoring the last game at the Civic Arena, plus a few programs. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? I like the Kiss Cam and when they honor former Penguins players on the video board. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE STORIES OR FAVORITE EXPERIENCES SINCE BECOMING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? I went to St. Louis for a game back in 1972 and stayed at the same hotel as the Penguins and got to meet Jimmy Rutherford, who was our goalie at the time. He introduced me to some other players like Prony and Apps. We were in a slump before that game, but ended up coming back to win 4-3 that started an 8-1-1 finish to put us in the playoffs on the last day of the season! We had to beat the Blues at home, which we did and the Flyers had to lose in Buffalo, which they did — WITH FOUR SECONDS REMAINING on a goal by Gerry Meehan. The crowd at the arena went nuts when word spread of the Flyers-Sabres outcome from those listening on a transistor radio. It was a great moment.

GAME

NOTES By: Bob Grove

THE SERIES [VS] ISLANDERS

Tonight the Penguins and New York Islanders meet for the fifth and final time in the regular season. Pittsburgh won the first game here on Oct. 18, 3-1, behind two goals from Patric Hornqvist, but the Islanders have won the last three games. That run started with a sweep of a home-and-home set in November, as the Islanders earned a 5-4 shootout victory here Nov. 21 with the help of a goal and two assists from Ryan Strome and then won, 4-1, at home the next night as John Tavares had a goal and an assist. The most recent game between the teams was Jan. 16 on Long Island, where Kyle Okposo had a hat trick to help rally New York from an early 2-0 deficit to a 6-3 win. . . It’s been nearly 30 years since the Islanders won four consecutive games against the Penguins, as they won five straight from Feb. 1, 1986 through Dec. 23, 1986. . . Prior to their current three-game losing streak against New York, the Penguins had been 8-1-0 in their previous nine games against the Islanders. . . Pittsburgh has scored first in each of its last three losses to the Islanders. . . Sidney Crosby has more assists (61) and points (88) against New York than any other team. continued on page 10

continued from page 9

He’s had multiple points against them in five of the last seven games (6+6). . . Evgeni Malkin has more goals (23) against the Islanders than any other team, and he has a career-high 60 points against both the Islanders and Flyers. . . Marc-Andre Fleury has started only four of the last 11 games against New York but is 3-4-1 in his last eight starts against them. . . The Penguins are 4-3-1 in their last eight home games against the Islanders. . . New York is 1-for-22 on the power play in its last six games here in Pittsburgh. The Islanders’ power play has been blanked in nine of its last 12 games here. . . John Tavares has seven goals and 23 points in 30 career games against Pittsburgh. . . He began the week one point behind Crosby in the NHL scoring race. . . Over the last nine years, the Islanders have only once won consecutive games here in Pittsburgh, that coming March 27, 2012 (5-3) and Jan. 29, 2013 (4-1). . . The Penguins are 111-95-22-7 all-time against New York, including a 63-39-14-3 at home.

THE PENGUINS

Pittsburgh concludes its regular season home schedule with this game and will play its final game of the regular season tomorrow night in Buffalo. The Penguins enter this game with a 23-13-4 mark on home ice, including 8-8-3 in its last 19. . . Malkin returned from a two-game

absence to play in Philadelphia in a 4-1 loss last Sunday, which left the Penguins in a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference before playing in Ottawa on Tuesday night. . . Crosby’s five-game scoring streak was ended in the loss to the Flyers. . . Hornqvist had 15 points in his last 16 games before playing in Ottawa on Tuesday night. . . Steve Downie missed the loss to the Flyers with an injury . . . The Penguins were hoping to have Christian Ehrhoff back in the lineup this week. He’s been out since going heavily into the boards March 24 against St. Louis. . . Crosby is seeking his third scoring title — and 16th by a Pittsburgh player. He would also become the first player to repeat as the Art Ross Trophy winner since the Penguins’ Jaromir Jagr won four straight titles from 1998-2001. Jagr won five scoring titles while playing in Pittsburgh, while Mario Lemieux won six and Malkin two. . . Defenseman Ian Cole had points in four straight games after picking up an assist in Philadelphia last Sunday. . . The Penguins’ penalty killers fell from No. 2 to No. 4 at 84.6 percent after allowing three powerplay goals in the loss to the Flyers. . . Brandon Sutter went into the game against the Senators with goals in two straight games and four of his last eight. That gave him 19 goals, two shy of his career high with Carolina in 2009-10. . . The Pittsburgh power play had produced a goal in three of its last five games (4-for-15) after the loss in Philadelphia. . . Paul Martin led the Penguins with a plus-20 mark as the week began.

REGULAR SEASON

NOTEABLES By: Mike Prisuta

In many cases the regular season the Penguins are about to complete was a test of survival. Entering the final week of their 82-game slate with a playoff spot still waiting to be clinched wasn’t what anyone had in mind. But what started back on Oct. 9 against Anaheim and is destined to end on Saturday night at Buffalo also included more than its share of triumph: Among the highlights: • Captain Sidney Crosby joined the Penguins’ 300-goal club when he scored on April 1 against Philadelphia. Crosby’s 26th goal of the season took him to a place where only Mario Lemieux (690), Jaromir Jagr (439), Jean Pronovost (319) and Rick Kehoe (312) had been in a Penguins uniform previously. Crosby also became the first player in his draft class (No. 1 overall, 2005) to reach the 300-goal plateau. • Crosby’s assist on Oct. 18 against the New York Islanders was the 500th of his career. His 800th career point was likewise registered this season on Nov. 6 against Toronto. • Center Evgeni Malkin’s assist on March 12 against Edmonton made him the fourth player in Penguins history to register 700 career points. Malkin also moved into sixth place on the Penguins’ all-time goals list (with 268 through 66 games played this season, ahead of Kevin Stevens’ 260). continued on page 24

• Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury had a career-high nine shutouts through his first 61 games, a figure that was good enough to break the team record for shutouts in a season (Tom Barrasso had seven in 1997-98). Fleury also authored a career-long shutout streak of 165:06 in a four-game stretch from Feb. 1-7.

• Defenseman Paul Martin blocked over 100 shots (108 through 70 games) for the first time since 2011-12. • Winger Chris Kunitz piled up a team-leading 205 hits through his first 71 games, a total that pushed Kunitz north of 150 hits for the sixth time in his career. Kunitz reached the 40-point plateau (17 goals, 23 assists through April 5) for the ninth time in his last 10 full seasons. • Center Brandon Sutter scored a career-high four short-handed goals in his first 77 games, a number that led the Penguins and ranked tied for second in the NHL entering the regular season’s final week. • Winger Blake Comeau scored a career-high five game-winning goals, a number that tied for the team lead with Kunitz through the Penguins’ first 79 games. • Center Daniel Winnik scored eight points (2+6) as a member of the Penguins after arriving via a trade with Toronto on Feb. 25 on the way to a career-high 33 points (9+24) through his first 76 games of the season. • Winger Craig Adams stretched his franchise-record streak for consecutive games played to 319 before finally missing a game on Dec. 20 against Florida. • Winger David Perron scored 12 goals and added 10 assists for 21 points through his first 40 games with the Penguins after a trade with Edmonton on Jan. 2 on the way to his fifth 40-point season (17+24 through 78 games played). continued on page 26

• Defenseman Kris Letang battled injury and unavailability but managed to lead Penguins defensemen in goals (11), assists (43), points (54), power-play points (24) and shots (197) through 79 games even though he had appeared in just 69 of those. Letang’s 43 assists and 54 points at that juncture constituted career-high totals and his 11 goals matched his career-best figure. • Defenseman Rob Scuderi and forward Nick Spaling were the only players to appear in the Penguins’ first 79 games of the season. • Winger Patric Hornqvist amassed 48 points (24+24) through the Penguins’ first 79 games, which pushed him over the 40-point mark for the second consecutive season and for the fifth time in the last six seasons. • Mike Johnston produced the highest point total (56) and had the best points percentage (.683) through 41 games of any Penguins coach through 41 games of his first season behind the bench. • The Penguins produced a winning record in October, November, December, January, February and March. • Forward/defenseman Taylor Chorney made his Penguins debut on Dec. 22 and in doing so joined his father Marc to form the sixth father-son duo in franchise history. Marc Chorney played in 139 games with the Penguins from 1980-83.

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

Bales was also key to Jeff Zatkoff’s development in his first NHL season where he posted a 12-6-2 record, 2.61 GAA and .912 save percentage. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

CONSOL Energy Center IN FIFTH YEAR TO PRESENT

HMK

MORE TOP TOURS, EVENTS By: Pam Thompson

PERM

CONSOL Energy Center — now in its fifth year of hosting entertainment for every sort of audience — will present more top tours and banner sporting events in the future. The New Year will bring the Maroon 5 World Tour 2015 and the Second and Third Rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship to CONSOL Energy Center. The Pittsburgh arena’s reputation for hosting major sporting events will continue. The Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Championship will be contested in CONSOL Energy Center in 2017, the A-10 announced in September. Bernadette V. McGlade, A-10 Commissioner, says, “The opportunity to rotate our championship within the A-10 footprint is exciting. She adds that CONSOL Energy Center is a state-of-the-art venue with great fan amenities and a successful history of hosting NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship events. Commenting on the significance of having a facility like CONSOL Energy Center in the community, Craig Davis, President and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH, says: “Pittsburgh is at the top of its game when it comes to sports, and CONSOL has been the linchpin for our success in attracting national events such as USA Gymnastics P&G Championships, NCAA Men’s Frozen Four and NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Combined with Penguins games and the fact that it is a top-performing concert venue in terms of sales, this building and AEG have been invaluable in terms of providing visibility and economic impact to the Pittsburgh region. “ Davis adds, “Sports events are an ever-growing opportunity within the tourism industry. The market segment is 25 percent of our convention sales team’s bookings. Having CONSOL Energy Center is key to the arsenal of facilities we can offer when bidding on large sporting events in our region.” continued on page 76

There is no limit

Home of the to the types of Pittsburgh Penguins and entertainment the Pittsburgh Power, and concerts at CONSOL Energy CONSOL Energy Center Center. has annually hosted the Three Rivers Classic of men’s collegiate hockey, the second annual CCM/ USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in 2013, and the NHL Draft in 2012. In addition to sporting events, well over 300 performances took place at CONSOL Energy Center in its first four Paul McCartney years of operation. Leading the eclectic parade of entertainers performing for CONSOL Energy Center audiences, Paul McCartney, the inaugural act on August 18, 2010, sold out his first show so quickly that a second performance was added for the next night. After winning five Grammy Awards earlier this year, McCartney came back to CONSOL Energy Center in July with his universally acclaimed “Out There” tour and played for another sold-out crowd. In his most recent appearance, McCartney sang and played his way through his ambitious set list and two encores, performing some 40 songs with dedications to his wife, Nancy, his late wife, Linda, the civil rights demonstrators of the ‘60s, his dad and Ringo Starr for their birthdays that coincided with the concert, as well as John Lennon and George Harrison. There is no limit to the types of entertainment and concerts appearing on CONSOL Energy Center stages. Concerts — rock, pop, doo wop, Christian, country and more — have included One Direction, Lady Gaga, Donnie and Marie Osmond, Foo Fighters, Casting Crowns, Katy Perry, Barry Manilow, Black Keys, Carrie Underwood, Drake, the “Justins” — Bieber and Timberlake, Arcade Fire, Wiz Khalifa, Bruno Mars, Usher, Miley Cyrus, Michael Bublé, Andre Rieu, Hillsong United, Josh Groban, TobyMac, New Kids on the Block, Chris Tomlin and Celtic Woman. In addition to the legendary McCartney, music icons like Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Roger Waters, Billy Joel, Bob continued on page 79

Entertainment at CONSOL Energy Center also included something for everyone. • Joel Osteen and Franklin Graham preached and prayed with CONSOL Energy Center audiences. • Jeff Dunham, Chelsea Handler, Kevin Hart, Dane Cook and Jeff Foxworthy with Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy made audiences laugh. • Brides shopped for everything Jon Bon Jovi to make their weddings special and heard Randy Fenoli of TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress” at the Wedding Clickers bridal show. • For fans of action, Monster Jam, Nuclear Cowboyz and WWE’s SmackDown, Raw and Royal Rumble have lit up CONSOL Energy Center. • Children have delighted in performances by Sesame Street Live and Disney on Ice, and children of all ages have thrilled to the animatronic spectaculars, “Walking With Dinosaurs,” and “How to Train Your Dragon,” as well as more than 40 performances by the Shrine Circus and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Opening in August 2010, CONSOL Energy Center soon won accolades as a venue for concerts and sports, as well as for its environmentally friendly design and features. • POLLSTAR, the concert industry’s leading business trade publication, honored Pittsburgh’s state-of-the-art entertainment site with its award for Best New Major Concert Venue in North America, a selection made by leading concert industry executives. • The Facilities Magazine Prime Site award went to CONSOL Energy Center in 2010-2011 and 2012. • The home of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Power is the first arena in the NHL and the AFL to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold Certification. • It was nominated in 2011 for Sports Business Journal’s Sports Facility of the Year, and in the same year Sports Business Journal’s

6th annual readers’ survey named CONSOL Energy Center the best NHL arena. • It won the National “Hall of Headlines” award from Venues Today magazine. • Its Box Office was nominated for “Box Office of the Year” by the International Ticketing Association. • The Master Builders’ Association (MBA) top prize for Best New Construction in the category over $10 Million was awarded to PJ Dick Incorporated for its role as construction manager on CONSOL Energy Center. • On the environmental front, CONSOL Energy Center was a nominee for the Sustainability Award at the International Business Awards in Barcelona, Spain in 2011. • The building won the Green Power: Turn It On! Award from PennFuture. • CONSOL Energy Center was honored as the most innovative energy efficient glass project in Glass Magazine’s Crystal Achievement Awards. CONSOL Energy Center claims the most comfortable seating arrangement in the NHL — seats up to 24 inches wide, with an accompanying increase in legroom. The center also provides ADA accessibility, family restrooms and guest services locations on all seating levels, as well as 12 escalators — that’s 10 more than at the Civic Arena. In addition to entertainment and sporting events, the arena’s main floor, suites, dining facilities and common areas are used for fundraisers and countless private functions. This year, CONSOL Energy Center hosted the Hillman Cancer Center Gala for the fourth time. It is the venue for the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s annual signature fundraisers -- Skates & Plates and the Wine Tasting Gala. The venue also has hosted the Pens Foundation’s scholarship winners and students attending its Explorer Series, CONSOL Energy’s Community All-Stars recognition programs, and Check Your Heart screenings. All of these activities contribute to making CONSOL Energy Center a busy Elton John place all year round.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ELITE

2015-16 TRYOUTS

Starting in 2015-16, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ official youth hockey program will expand to two teams in the 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, and 2001 birth years for boys and the U10 and U12 age classifications for the girls teams. “With the explosion in youth hockey interest and the opening of the world class UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex this summer in Cranberry, we felt it was the perfect time to expand our program and create opportunities for more young players to utilize this great facility,” said Rich Hixon, executive director of strategic planning for the Pittsburgh Penguins and vice president of the Penguins Elite Amateur Hockey Association. “They also will have access to the outstanding coaches and trainers who will work at the facility. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in the late summer, will be the new home and headquarters of Penguins Elite. Games, practices, specialized training sessions and tournaments will take place at the new facility, which will also be the practice home of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The two teams — Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and the Pittsburgh Penguins Black — will both play AAA schedules. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will continue to play a full schedule of games and showcase events against the most elite programs in North America. The Pittsburgh Penguins Black teams will play a highlycompetitive AAA schedule, featuring games and tournaments designed to maximize each player’s development. Penguins Elite will continue to field one team in the midget age groups for boys (U15, U16, and U18) and the U14, U16, and U19 age classifications for the girls program. For more information please visit pittsburghpenguinselite.com.

Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”

said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. For more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

HOCKEY IS FOR

EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

DRAFT CLASS

KASPERI KAPANEN

Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.

SAM LAFFERTY

Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

ANTHONY ANGELLO

Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.

JADEN LINDO

Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

JEFF TAYLOR

Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. Taylor led all Union rookie blueliners in scoring with 16 points. Beyond the Numbers: Last season Jeff was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team as an 18-year-old true freshman.

PROJECT

POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settler’s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS PROFILE

STEVE

DOWNIE By: Mark Madden

When the Penguins defeated Arizona, 3-2, March 28 at CONSOL Energy Center, Sidney Crosby was the game’s No. 1 star. The Penguins’ captain had a goal and two assists. But it’s not far-fetched to say Steve Downie won the game. The gritty winger fought Shane Doan after the Arizona captain had knocked Kris Letang out of the game with a borderline hit. It was a totally appropriate reason and time to drop the gloves, and Downie appeared to win a decision. Momentum gained. Then, with the score knotted 1-1 in the third period, Downie took a nifty banked drop pass from Crosby and buried a power-play goal at the 9:19 mark. Downie’s short-side slap shot solved Coyotes’ goaltender Mike Smith, who made 43 saves on the day but couldn’t deny Downie’s rocket. The game typified the potential positive impact of Downie: Tough enough to throw down, skilled enough to net a crucial goal. After 68 games, Downie had 14 goals, 14 assists and a leaguehigh 228 penalty minutes. Look over your shoulder. You’d better know where Downie is. His goal was simple, yet beautiful. Crosby skated into the zone, and then hit Downie coming in stride. Downie got time and space, and ultimately got a goal. “I just remember Sid throwing it back to me, and I kind of took continued on page 162

a step or two,” Downie said. “No one came to me, so I wound up and put it on net.” Doan’s hit on Letang caught the Penguins’ defenseman off balance just after he had moved the puck. Letang left the contest with a concussion. The hit occurred at 15:15 of the second. Downie was prodding Doan to scrap a little over a minute later. “[Doan]’s a hard player. He’s going to finish his hits,” said Downie, 27. “It was unfortunate, the way Tanger fell. I got nothing but respect for Doaner. He’s not going to make dirty hits, or take dirty runs at guys. “But, at the end of the day, we’re down Tanger. That’s what hurts the most.” Downie knew he had to fight Doan. Doan knew it, too. “We kind of talked about it,” Downie said. “I said, ‘Hey, this kind of got to be done.’ He’s not going to back down from that. Things like that happen in hockey. “We had a lot of energy after that. The guys kind of woke up. It was a good thing.” Downie’s goal was a good thing, too. Smith had given the Penguins fits all day, and things looked grim when Arizona got the game’s first goal at 4:52 of the third period. But Daniel Winnik got things level just 2:24 later, and Downie put the Penguins ahead for keeps just 2:03 after that. “We know Mike Smith is a good goalie,” Downie said. “He’s a big body, and he’s very active. “We just needed to pepper him. Throw as much as we could on net, and we finally busted through in the third. We stuck with it, and got the bounces at the end.” Downie gave lots of credit to Crosby, the man who set up Downie’s tally. Crosby had a two-point lead in the NHL scoring race as of March 30. “We needed someone to step up, and [Crosby] always does,” Downie said. “You kind of expect it from him, and tonight he showed why.” This season has been a renaissance of sorts for Downie. The 5-foot-11, 191-pound Ontario native signed a one-year contract in the offseason. His goal vs. Arizona gave him 14, the second-highest single-season goal total of his NHL career. Downie had 22 goals and 24 assists in 2009-10 with Tampa Bay. He skated on a line with Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis that season. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

PENGUINS’

ANTHEM SINGER By: Haley Sawyer

Minutes before a home game at CONSOL Energy Center, there’s a lot of commotion at the Zamboni gate. There are referees, security guards and all sorts of people wearing badges standing around making sure everything is in order. Beyond all the chaos is Jeff Jimerson. Before most home games, Jimerson can be found here sipping a bottle of water and eating cough drops, preparing for arguably the most symbolic part of every pregame: the national anthem. “It’s intense,” Jimerson said. “I do anthems for corporate events and it’s not the same.” The singer made his anthem debut in the 1990-91 season. Jimerson and his band Airborne performed after a celebrity hockey game, which featured the likes of Alex Trebek and Jason Priestley. Jimerson was approached after the appearance and asked to start singing the national anthem for the Penguins. Jimerson, who has also sang anthems for the Steelers and Pirates, estimates that he has sung well over 500 anthems for the Penguins. “Even after all these years I still get pretty pumped up. And it’s over like that. So when you’re done, you’re like, ‘okay,’” Jimerson said. “Even now that I’ve done it so many times, it’s still pretty intense. And at this time of year, right before playoffs, it’s a whole different thing. Everything goes up a notch when the playoffs come. It’s significant. You feel the intensity in the arena.”

174

It’s very different from playing with Airborne or singing the anthem for any other event or team. There, he’s surrounded by his band or can grip his guitar. At CONSOL Energy Center, he steps into the bright lights alone. To combat those nerves, he’s designed a pre-anthem routine. A fitting decision to make, given hockey’s reputation for being superstitious. The singer arrives 40 minutes before show time and watches a bit of pregame warmups. He grabs a bottle of water and empties his pockets of everything except three 20-dollar bills. He never goes anywhere other than his dressing room or the area around the Zamboni gate before the anthem. The pressure has been slightly alleviated since the team moved to their new home in 2010. “In the old building, you’d go out and the backup goalie would sit there because they didn’t have enough room on the bench,” Jimerson said. “Sometimes they would sit there and they’d go, ‘don’t screw up. Do you know the words? Don’t mess up O Canada.’” Even though there are some nice touches to the new barn, some parts of him still long for the walls of Mellon Arena. “Before, I was in a hallway with a big garbage can and it smelled like nachos and beer. But it had character,” Jimerson said. “I’d do my little circle and warm up. The guys would walk by. It was the routine. I don’t necessarily miss the stench of nachos and beer, but it had character and I miss the old place.” In this building, he’s had the opportunity to take part in some major pregame ceremonies, most recently when he introduced a returning Army vet. He usually doesn’t get to say anything other than national anthem verses but when he does, it’s for a good reason. continued on page 177

“The first time I had to speak was the Franklin Regional thing that happened,” he said. “It was a pretty traumatic day for the Pittsburgh area and they wanted to recognize that. “They asked me to ask everyone to join me in solidarity. I said, ‘You mean speak?’ That threw me way off.” Jimerson has since developed an impressive resume. He’s ranked sixth on Bleacher Report’s top eight NHL national anthem singers. He has his own IMDB page, thanks to the role of “National Anthem Singer” in the 1995 movie Sudden Death. He’s also got his own trading card. It’s all a big deal for the North Hills native. Like many other NHL anthem singers, Jimerson has become an extension of the team. The latest generation of Penguins fans has grown up around him and his famous G clef hockey jersey (which happens to be a gift from his in-laws). They carry the song when Jimerson’s microphone volume is lowered, creating solidarity among the crowd, who often scream phrases such as “We love you Jeff!” “Years ago when I first started, I thought ‘I wish I could be the guy.’ I wish I could be known as ‘the guy.’ And now I am,” he said. “I’ve always said that it’s just a reflection of the love for the team.” Playing the anthem at hockey games began in 1946 as a way of showing respect for players returning from World War II. Since then, the Star-Spangled Banner and O Canada have carved their way into the hockey world and became symbols of their own. Fans as well as players use the time to mentally prepare for what’s to come. Jimerson’s only mistake since he first belted the opening line of “Oh, say can you see?” was omitting an entire section of “O Canada.” There were some slight boos, but no damage otherwise. “The cardinal rule is never stop,” he said. “Just keep going, because you might get away with it.”

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta

HAPPY NEW YEAR: The Wild stood 12th in the Western Conference and tied for 23rd overall in the NHL with a record of 18-19-5 and 41 points back on Jan. 14. Minnesota then went 26-7-3 over its next 36 games to improve to fifth in the West and 10th overall with 96 points (44-26-8) and move to the brink of clinching a spot in the postseason.

REMEMBER HIM?: Winnipeg forward Lee Stempniak produced eight points (5+3) and two gamewinning goals in his first 14 games with the Jets after arriving in a trade with the New York Rangers. Stempniak appeared in 21 regular-season games (4+7) and 13 playoff games (2+1) with the Penguins in 2013-14.

A HIT ON BROADWAY: The Rangers stormed into the final week of the regular season having won 20 of their last 27 games (20-5-2) and 43 of their last 60 games (43-14-3) on the way to winning 50 games in a season

for the fourth time in franchise history and winning a division championship (Metropolitan) for the eighth time in franchise annals.

STRONG FINISH: The Blue Jackets didn’t do enough to make it back to the playoffs, but their 5-3 victory over the Penguins on April 4 extended Columbus’ winning streak to a franchiserecord nine consecutive games. That victory also gave the Blue Jackets the best record over the NHL over the previous 10 games (9-1-0) and improved Columbus’ records to 12-1-0 in its last 13 games and 13-4-0 since the beginning of March.

5 x 20: Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader’s overtime goal on March 22 against St. Louis was the Michigan State product’s 20th goal of the season and allowed the Red Wings to match the Ottawa Senators for the most 20-goal scorers in the NHL this season (five). Abdelkader’s previous career-high total for goals had been 10.

PENGUINS, CITY OF PITTSBURGH HONOR

MIKE LANGE’S 40TH SEASON IN THE BOOTH By: Michelle Crechiolo

Before the Penguins’ game against the St. Louis Blues on March 24, the team surprised legendary and unique broadcaster Mike Lange with a special presentation honoring his 40th season in the booth. Just before their team meeting at 5:15 p.m., the players brought Lange into the locker room and captain Sidney Crosby presented him with a No. 40 “Lange” jersey. “I don’t know whether to smile like a butcher’s dog or scratch my back with a hacksaw,” Lange said as he entered the room. “Everything that I’ve accomplished comes from this logo and organization. And all of you people from generation to generation.” Lange was also presented with a plaque by his broadcast partner Phil Bourque. “You make every night a hockey night in Pittsburgh,” Bourque said. Lange, who was inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001, has called over 3,000 Penguins games with his colorful and creative style beginning in the 1974-75 season, when he broke into the NHL as a play-by-play man. He left for one year, but returned in 1976-77 and has been with the organization ever since. “You all keep me young,” Lange joked. “I appreciate this. Thank you to each and every one of you and all the players from throughout the years.” When city councilman Dan Gilman saw that tribute on the videoboard while at the game, he knew the city needed to honor his 40 seasons in the booth as well. So at the city council’s meeting the following week, they officially declared March 31, 2015 as Mike Lange Day in the city of Pittsburgh. “Quite honestly, it’s overwhelming because to me, it shows what you put into something comes back,” Lange said afterward. “That the people of Pittsburgh and everybody involved think enough to be able to have a proclamation for something that I love to do and really don’t consider it to be anything more than what anybody else does, really for a job and what they do for a livelihood, it is very special to me and it’s an award I’ll cherish for a long time.”

RULES CHANGES nhl.com

RULE 1.8

RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.

RULE 23

GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.

RULE 24

PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.

RULE 38

VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198

continued from page 197

referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.

RULE 57 TRIPPING

The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)

RULE 76 FACE-OFFS

To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.

RULE 64

DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME

* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.

RULE 85

PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.

RULE 1.9

RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
