Bon Jovi’s 18th Tour Plays PPG Paints Arena By: Pam Thompson
Bon Jovi ‘s This House Is Not for Sale Tour stops at PPG Paints Arena this spring in support of its newest studio album of the same name. In their fourth decade, the founding members, Jon Bon Jovi, lead singer, David Bryan, keyboardist, and Tico Torres, drummer, are joined on the This House Is Not for Sale Tour by two not-so-new-comers to the band. Hugh McDonald, bassist, and Phil X, lead guitarist, joined Bon Jovi last year. Both musicians have been unofficial members of the band for years. It is the band’s first road trip since the Because We Can Tour four years ago, and its first without Richie Sambora on lead guitar. The tour kicked off in February – 30 years after “Livin’ on a Prayer” topped the Billboard Hot 100. Performing in cities across the U.S., Bon Jovi closes the 30-concert This House Is Not for Sale Tour with shows in Pittsburgh, New York City and Toronto. It is the third Bon Jovi tour to play in the nest of the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 2011, the Bon Jovi Live Tour played the arena for two shows Feb. 11 and 12, and in 2013, the Because We Can Tour performed one show on Feb. 21.

Bon Jovi’s reputation as a touring act is prodigious. The group began touring in 1983 and the This House Is Not for Sale Tour is the band’s 18th career road trip. The Because We Can Tour was Bon Jovi’s third tour in six years to be ranked the No. 1 top-grossing tour in the world. The Rolling Stones are the only other act to have attained this distinction. Its Because We Can Tour, which supported the band’s 12th studio album, What About Now, was the highest grossing tour in the world in 2013, earning $205 million. It was ranked No. 1 on Pollstar’s Top 100 Worldwide Tours list. The tour also won Billboard Touring Awards for Top Tour, Top Draw and Eventful Fans’ Choice. Bon Jovi won Billboard’s Eventful Fans’ Choice in 2011, the year after The Circle Tour and the year of “Music Bon Jovi Live. transcends Bon Jovi Live took to the road in support of the borders and band’s compilation album, The Greatest Hits. beliefs.” When Bon Jovi’s successful touring legacy earned it the 2016 Legend of Live Billboard Touring Award, Jon Bon Jovi commented in his acceptance speech: “Music transcends borders and beliefs. We spent our lives traveling to places both near and far to deliver that message to the people who were spending their hard-earned money to hear us tell their stories. We always tried our best to never let them down. “Success can be measured in many ways. It’s not just box-office scores and chart positions. It can also be measured by the impact it has on those you share it with We sing songs for those who are threatened by a wall. In fact, we sang songs to a Soviet Union when there was a wall. We now ask artists to sing their songs to the Muslim, and the disabled, for marriage equality and the LGTBQ community. “We can all sing to the disenfranchised and the scared who need a bit of optimism. We sing because we can and because we in this room already know that music is a healer. We have the unique ability to deliver that hug, that handshake, that look into the eye of those we serve with our message of healing and we, this diverse music community, can be the ones to start that evolution. This is my hope, my prayer, this is our peaceful revolution.” Jon Bon Jovi says, that This House Is Not for Sale is the result of “having something to say and nothing to prove.” In November, This House Is Not for Sale made its debut at No. 1 in the U.S. on the Billboard 200, giving Bon Jovi its sixth No. 1 album, following 2013’s What About Now, 2009’s The Circle, 2007’s Lost Highway, 1988’s New Jersey, and 1986’s Slippery When Wet. What About Now, Lost Highway and The Circle all earned multi-platinum status and made their debuts at the pinnacle of the Top 200. This House Is Not for Sale, the group’s 13th studio album also topped the charts in Australia and Japan, and made the Top 5 in 54 countries. It was No. 1 on iTunes charts in 25 countries. The album’s title track reached the Top Ten on the Adult Contemporary Radio Chart, giving Bon Jovi its highest career debut on that ranking. Reviewers frequently note that the singer/songwriter has the ability to create appealing new music after more than 30 years. Critics cite his ongoing ability to create music to fill arenas and stadiums with energetic, fist-pumping, soulful rock. The 12 standard tracks on This House Is Not for Sale each have music video interpretations. Jon Bon Jovi contributed to the writing of every track and has exclusive credit for “Living With The Ghost,” “God Bless This Mess,” and “Reunion.” The album tracks are: o “This House Is Not For Sale” o “Living With The Ghost” o “Knockout” o “Labor Of Love” o “Born Again Tomorrow” o “Roller Coaster” o “New Year’s Day” o “The Devil’s In The Temple” o “Scars On This Guitar” o “God Bless This Mess” o “Reunion,” and o “Come On Up To Our House.” The deluxe edition also includes “Real Love,” “All Hail The King” and “We Don’t Run.” Special performances, contests and offers, led up to the release of This House Is Not for Sale and its tour. In October, before the release of This House Is Not for Sale, Bon Jovi performed the upcoming album in its entirety in four intimate theater settings. The brief tour concluded with a performance at Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre in New York City. The band had an exclusive, limited-time channel on SiriusXM last fall for a month and again in February for the tour kickoff. Bon Jovi conducted a contest for local entertainers to determine an opening act in Jon Bon Jovi was Pittsburgh. Similar contests are being held in most cities on this year’s tour. The award recognized the tenth anniversary of the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation which focuses on providing basic needs. He founded the JBJ Soul Foundation which addresses hunger and homelessness in 2006. Five years later the JBJ Soul Kitchen opened. The kitchen provides healthy, organically grown food in a restaurant setting. Last year, the Soul Kitchen reached its goal of 51 percent paying diners and 49 percent diners in need. The project is a pay-what-you-can-model. Diners either pay a minimum donation for their meals or volunteer for an hour to earn a dining certificate that will feed the volunteer and up to four family members.

Planning for Next Shrine Circus Begins When 68th Edition Wraps By: Pam Thompson
No sooner than the 68th edition of the Shrine Circus of Pittsburgh wraps its five performances this spring at PPG Paints Arena than it will be time to begin planning the 2018 show. “You finish one and it’s time to start working on the next one,” according to Paul Leavy, the Shriners circus chairman and promoter. Leavy should know. He has been heading up this major fundraiser for the Shriners of Pittsburgh for 24 years. The circus is the largest fundraiser of the Shriners of Pittsburgh and it benefits the Shriners’ network of 22 children’s hospitals across the country which provide free care to youths up to age 18. The closest Shrine Hospital to Pittsburgh is in Erie, Pa. It provides ambulatory pediatric medical services, including surgery, outpatient physical and occupational therapy, and medical care through its Outpatient Clinic. Shriners’ physicians also provide inpatient surgery at partner hospitals. Describing the circus, Leavy says, “It has the most broad-based appeal of any entertainment event out there. It is ever changing and appeals to all ages. It is ageless. There is no plot or drama. Sit, relax, and take it all in. There is a lot to see.” While the 146-year-old Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus holds its final performances this May, Leavy is confident of the future of the Shrine Circus of Pittsburgh. “We don’t plan to go anywhere,” says Leavy noting that the Shrine Circus is a “totally different business model” than Ringling Brothers. “We are all volunteer. We don’t have the overhead, the administrative costs, the train, the cooks. We are able to stay very nimble and change quickly,” he adds. Leavy designs each year’s circus for families, and his own family has been involved with the Shriners’ Pittsburgh circus for four generations. His father, Continued on page 22

Jack, recently stopped working actively with the circus after volunteering since the 1960s. Jack had followed his father-in-law, Al Lennon, an original member of the Shrine Clowns, into the Shriners fraternity. And Paul’s son, Matt, joined his father’s circus team last year. “Once you get the circus in your blood, it doesn’t go away,” says Leavy. “It just grabs you, and it’s all for a good cause.” Filling PPG Paints Arena’s performance space is one of Leavy’s considerations for planning circus acts. “That building (PPG Paints Arena) is so big that something that works well in a small venue might not play well here,” Leavy says. As acts are signed on for each year’s show, he takes into consideration what is needed to fill the floor of the arena. “We are loaded with animal acts this year,” he says enumerating the fourloggers in this year’s show. “We have eight tigers, one lion, two bears, three elephants, eight camels, and there will be dogs.” Castle’s Performing Bears, which join this year’s circus, is one of only two bear acts in the nation, according to Leavy. Acts this year also include Spider Man, and The Human Fuse. Leavy explains that The Human Fuse lights himself on fire and then, using a giant crossbow of sorts, launches himself across the arena. “I wouldn’t try it at home. Let’s put it that way. I wouldn’t try it,” says Leavy who has presented daredevil acts of every ilk. Shrine Clowns also will perform, and “The parade is back by tradition and popular demand,” says Leavy. Annually, the circus includes the Shriners parade at the start of the Saturday evening show. Groups of Shriners in bands, playing bagpipes, riding horseback, singing and driving Model Ts, mini trucks, motorcycles and other motorized conveyances assemble for the march. The 2017 Shrine Circus of Pittsburgh performs at PPG Paints Arena April 7-9. | 22 |

Going to Church? Chief and ECB Go Solo on Holdin’ My Own Tour By: Pam Thompson
Going to church – that is Eric Church’s Holdin’ My Own Tour concert at PPG Paints Arena this spring? The Chief and his band are the main and only attraction for the audience which is great news for fans. The Holdin’ My Own Tour marks the first time that Church has no openers or support act on tour. In support of an initiative to keep music education in schools, Church has selected a regional student choir to perform with him on each of his tour stops. The tour kicked off in January and in review after review, Church’s enthusiasm energy and endurance are being noticed. When he released his fifth studio album, Mr. Misunderstood, it was mailed directly to members of the Church Choir in a surprise move without announcement or any promotion. Continued on page 26

Its title track was first performed live days later at the 2015 CMA Awards, and a year later, Mr. Misunderstood became the 2016 CMA Awards Album of the Year. It also was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2016 ACM Awards, and the music video for “Mr. Misunderstood” won the ACM Video of the Year Award in 2016. “The way this album came together mandated we release it as a surprise, straight to our fans, as it was important for me to deliver the music the same way the creativity hit me – directly and swiftly,” Church says. Announcing the album and telling the story of how rapidly Mr. Misunderstood came In support of an together, Church says, “It always takes me initiative to keep time to look for inspiration to make a new music education album. This time inspiration came looking for me.” in schools, Church Church says that his newest album came has selected a to fruition so quickly that he was left with regional student open time in his schedule which enabled him choir to perform to focus on the way that fans experience his with him on each live music, including the ticket sale process. of his tour stops. It is Church’s routine to cancel all ticket orders found to be made by scalpers. For the Holdin’ My Own Tour, a new proprietary technology is being used to flag orders from scalpers. Once detected, these orders are being canceled at any time without warning. Church, urging fans to stay away from the secondary market, cautions that tickets purchased there will be invalid by show time. Proceeds from the sale of Chief Cares Platinum Seats benefit the causes of Church’s Chief Cares Foundation, a 501c3 charity. Last fall, the foundation presented a $1 million donation to JDRF. Church’s foundation also has aided families and youth in need in the U.S., Nepal and Haiti, as well as no-kill animal shelter operations. Church’s first album Sinners Like Me was released in 2006, a banner year for the artist. His debut album was preceded by his first single, “How ‘Bout You,” which went to No. 14 on the Hot Country Songs Chart. He performed at the Grand Ole Opry for the first time, and he toured with Rascal Flatts on the Me and My Gang Tour. The gold certified Sinners Like Me produced three singles: o “How ‘Bout You” which peaked at No. 14 on the Hot Country Songs Chart, and o “Two Pink Lines” and “Guys Like Me,” both of which reached the Top 20. His second album, the platinum certified Carolina followed in 2009 and produced three more singles: “Smoke a Little Smoke,” and two Top 10 hits, “Love Your Love the Most,” which also is platinum certified, and “Hell on the Heart.” Continued on page 28 | 26 |

In 2016, the singles “Don’t Let Me Down” made the chart’s top five, and “Closer” was The Chainsmokers first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. It also went to the top of charts in 17 countries and reached No. 2 in six more countries. “Roses,” “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Closer” all have multi-platinum status, as does the duo’s 2014 song, “#Selfie.” It charted at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and internationally at No. 11 in the U.K., No. 3 in Australia and No. 2 in Sweden. The official video for “Gold” logged more than 60 million views within 11 months. Most recently, Emily Warren and The Chainsmokers collaborated on “Paris.” Warren did uncredited vocals on the song. She co-wrote “Don’t Let Me Down” and along with The Chainsmokers received her first Grammy for the song. In 2015, Warren was featured on The Chainsmoker’s “Until You Were Gone” with Tritonal. | 32 |

The tour, planners say, “champions, represents and promotes the local church: the Bride of Christ.” They add, the tour highlights the creativity, heart and mission of the local church, and gives audiences an opportunity to see a unique combination of performers and worship leaders on one stage. “OUTCRY continues to be such a humbling tour to be a part of,” says Ryan Romeo, creative director for the OUTCRY Tour. “Each time we get out on the road, I’m reminded of what God is doing through his Church across the nation. He is moving in His people power and unity, and I’m filled with a huge sense of anticipation to see what He continues to do this year,” says Romeo. Kim Walker-Smith of Jesus Culture says, “We are excited to be a part of the OUTCRY tour again. It was so amazing to see people from many denominations come together and worship Jesus.” “The heart behind OUTCRY is to promote the local church and to encourage unity amongst the body of Christ, which is so important to us at Jesus Culture. We are so happy to be a part of that,” Walker-Smith says. This year’s edition of the tour appears in 18 cities throughout the South, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic over a 24-day period.

Music Giants – Taylor and Raitt Slate July Show for Pittsburgh By: Pam Thompson
Two giants of the American music scene – James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt – are coming to PPG Paints Arena with their bands on July 15 for one show. Taylor and his All-Star Band will have Raitt and her band as special guests for the concert, which will be one of 17 shows that they perform jointly this summer. Both performers are well known for their philanthropy and activism in addition to their many musical achievements. The two stars were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the same year (2000), and Taylor and Raitt each have been recognized as MusiCares Person of the Year. The award honors a performer for their artistry and philanthropy with an all-star tribute during Grammy week festivities. The performance helps to raise money for the MusiCares Foundation which assists musicians in need. Raitt received the honor first in 1992, and she was among the cast of stars who performed when the award went to Taylor in 2006. The two musicians are performing together after conducting separate tours in the first half of the year. Taylor performed for the 27th Rainforest Fund Anniversary Gala in January. He’s been doing this benefit since 1991. Continued on page 63
