THE SERIES [VS] RANGERS

The Penguins are facing the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the seventh time and third consecutive season. The Rangers knocked the Penguins out of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, beating them in seven games in the second round in 2014 and five games in the first round in 2015. The only team Pittsburgh has faced more often in the playoffs is Washington (eight times) . . . The Penguins won each of their first four playoff series against the Rangers, knocking them out in 1989 (four games), 1992 (six games), 1996 (five games) and 2008 (five games). . . The Penguins have lost seven of their last eight playoff games to New York, the only win in that span coming in Game Two in New York last season (4-3). In those seven losses, Pittsburgh scored a total of seven goals. . . The Penguins have lost four straight home playoff games to New York since a 3-0 victory in Game Two of the 2014 series. That is the longest home losing streak against one team in Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; playoff history. . . Pittsburgh won the series against the Rangers in the 2015-16 regular season, losing the first game here on Feb. 10 (3-0) and then winning the last three. The Penguins claimed a 4-1 victory here on March 3, a 5-3 win in New York on March 13 and a 3-2 overtime victory in New York continued on page 14

on March 27. . . During that regular season series, Sidney Crosby (3+1) and Phil Kessel (2+2) led the Penguins in scoring, while Jesper Fast (1+3) led the Rangers. . . Crosby has three goals and 13 points in 17 career playoff games against New York, with all three goals coming at Madison Square Garden. . . Evgeni Malkin, who missed the final 15 games of the regular season with an upper body injury, has seven goals and 14 points in 17 career playoff games against the Rangers. His status for the first round is uncertain. . . Penguins’ coach Mike Sullivan was a Rangers’ assistant coach for four seasons ending in 2012-13. . . Penguins’ winger Carl Hagelin, part of Pittsburgh’s productive second line with Kessel and Nick Bonino since Malkin left the lineup, scored the overtime goal for the Rangers that eliminated the Penguins last spring. . . The series shifts to New York for Games Three and Four on Tuesday and Thursday.

This marks the eighth time in nine seasons that the Penguins have had home-ice for the opening round of the playoffs, the only exception being last spring’s first-round series against the Rangers. . . Pittsburgh is in the playoffs for the 10th straight season, the second-longest current streak in the NHL next to Detroit’s 25 and the secondlongest in team history. The Penguins reached the post-season 11 straight times beginning in 1991. . . Should Evgeni Malkin miss the start of the series, it will be his first missed playoff games since missing the entire first round matchup with Tampa Bay in 2011. . . Among the Penguins who would be seeing their first Stanley Cup playoff experience this spring are Derrick Pouliot, Bryan Rust, Conor Sheary, Tom Kuhnhackl, Jeff Zatkoff, Matt Murray and Oskar Sundqvist. . .Malkin, Kris Letang and Chris Kunitz are the only players to score overtime goals with Pittsburgh in the playoffs. . . Pittsburgh ended the regular season by winning 14 of its last 16 games, including eight of nine on the road. . . Marc-Andre Fleury missed the last five games of the regular season with a concussion, and backup Matt Murray left the final game of the regular season April 9 against Philadelphia after a collision with Brayden Schenn. Jeff Zatkoff finished that game, a 3-1 road loss that snapped the Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; eight-game win streak. . . Matt Cullen played for the Rangers in the 2006-07 season. . . Crosby finished third in NHL scoring this season with 36 goals and 85 points. He has 43 goals and 118 points in 100 career playoff games, which is fifth among active players. . . Among active goaltenders, the Rangersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Henrik Lundqvist ranks first in career playoff games (111) while Fleury is second (98). Lundqvist is also first among active goaltenders in career wins (54) while Fleury is second (53).

WIN NATIONAL TITLE By Candace Kourounis

The Pittsburgh Penguins 18U Elite team made history after winning the Tier 1 Division National Title on Monday, April 4 in San Jose, California. With the win, the Penguins became the first team in Pittsburgh history to bring home a USA Hockey Tier 1 National title after achieving a 3-0 triumph over Culver Academy (Indiana) in the championships. Seeded eighth, the Penguins Elite, who play out of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex fell to the Chicago Fury 6-5 in overtime in their opening game of the tournament, which ran from March 31 – April 4, 2016. Pittsburgh was able to rebound in their second game as they went on to shut out the San Jose Jr. Sharks 6-0. An impressive feat also saw the Penguins upset number one ranked Shattuck St. Mary’s 3-2, which is coincidentally the same school Penguins star Sidney Crosby attended. The two wins earned Pittsburgh a birth in the quarter-finals, which proved to be an easy test as the Penguins beat the Cape Cod Whalers by a commanding score of 7-3. The semi-finals saw Pittsburgh beat the North Jersey Avalanche 2-1 in exciting fashion, as Penguins captain Logan Stork ended the game 3:09 into overtime, advancing Pittsburgh to the Championship game against Culver Academy. During the championship game, Chad Veltri of the Penguins Elite stopped all 22 shots faced as Pittsburgh went on to shut out Culver 3-0. Connor Quinn, Jordan Timmons and Eric Cooley all scored to lift the Penguins to a national championship. “It’s just a great day for Pittsburgh hockey,” said head coach Kevin Quinn. “Over the years, a lot of teams have put in tremendous amounts of time to develop Pittsburgh hockey…they are a real solid group of kids and I had a great coaching staff…it’s a tremendous accomplishment.” Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins 18U Elite team on a remarkable season!

When the Penguins beat Nashville, 5-2, on March 31, it was their 10th win in 11 games. Winger Phil Kessel (who scored twice) explained things thusly: “We always knew we had a good squad. We just kept on battling and improving.” Kessel improved more than most. The sniper had a fabulous March, racking up six goals and 10 assists in 16 games as the Penguins won 12 of 16. Kessel became dangerous on a shift-byshift basis, the tip of the spear on a line that featured winger Carl Hagelin and center Nick Bonino (deputizing for the injured Evgeni Malkin). Fast, faster, fastest: Any opponent is hard-pressed to keep up with that trio. Kessel well and truly exploded in the Penguins’ 7-2 win at Detroit March 26, racking up a goal and four assists for a career-high five points. “I’m getting a couple breaks, I guess,” Kessel said after the Penguins beat Nashville. “When you play well as a team, everybody benefits.” Kessel finished the regular season with 26 goals and 33 assists in 82 games. Kessel missed zero games for the sixth straight campaign. Now, the playoffs: When given the chance, Kessel has been a post-season threat, compiling 13 goals and eight assists in 22 Stanley Cup tournament games. Kessel’s alliance with Bonino has been productive. Bonino also notched a career-high five points in the rout at Detroit. Bonino’s presence has given that line an additional north-south component. The puck gets up the ice in a hurry. “Whoever you play with on this team, we have great centers throughout the lineup,” Kessel said. “I don’t think it really matters. [Bonino] is obviously a skilled player. You watch him out there, he makes a lot of good plays.” Kessel has a simple explanation when it comes to his late-season pyrotechnics: “This game is a lot about confidence. When you’re a confident hockey player, things are a little bit easier out there.” Kessel certainly made scoring twice against Nashville look easy. Actually, the first goal really was easy: Defenseman Justin Schultz made a brilliant diagonal cross-ice pass, providing Kessel an empty net from close range. continued on page 31

“That was a hell of a great play,” Kessel said, smiling. “[Schultz] faked everyone out, and gave me a tap-in.” Kessel’s second goal was more difficult: Defenseman Trevor Daley hit Kessel in stride with a cross-rink pass. Kessel hit the blue line with speed, using his skating momentum to generate velocity for a crisp wrist shot from the top of the right circle that beat Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne high to the far (stick) side. When asked if he knew the shot was in the minute it left his stick, Kessel replied, “Not really. In this league, the goalies are so good that you never know. I was fortunate on that one, because he’s a real good goalie.” Kessel’s shooting style is odd: He often shoots off the wrong foot, and almost never shoots one-timers. But his technique pales next to his results. The win over Nashville saw the Penguins score first and never trail. That was a welcome way to close out March: Of the Penguins’ 12 victories that month, seven saw the opposition score first. “We’ve started the game slow a lot of the time and had to battle our way back,” Kessel said. “But tonight, we got the first one. Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including ten straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Jason Botterill is in his second season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. The WB/S Penguins have made the playoffs all six years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 39, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. MIKE SULLIVAN HEAD COACH

Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Assistant coach Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization. In his current role, he oversees the club’s defensemen and its penalty killing unit. Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams was a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses. A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder. Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond. Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

TAKES PENGUINS BACK TO THE ROARING TWENTIES When guests arrived for the second annual Aces & Ice Casino Night presented by Trib Total Media on March 22, they took a CONSOL Energy Center elevator back in time to a Pittsburgh Penguins’ Roaring Twenties Speakeasy! A hostess dressed in flapper attire greeted guests and accompanied them on the elevator. En route, she gave the guests the Speakeasy password. When they arrived on the first level, guests then walked down a hallway resembling an alley in 1920s New York City or Chicago — complete with a 1924 T-model truck, lamp posts and brick walls. Meeting them at the door stood a gangster-looking doorman donning wing-tipped shoes, striped pants and a gun holster. Guests then used their knowledge of the password — “Mario Sent Me” — and gained entry to the Penguins Speakeasy Casino continued on page 75

on the CONSOL Energy Center floor. Penguins’ players looked dapper in their 1920s attire while they served as dealers at the blackjack, craps, roulette and spin wheel tables. Over 300 guests, mostly donning themed attire, enjoyed the casino games, a variety of food stations, signature 1920s beverages and black and white silent movies on a large end zone screen. The event featured live music from the Swingtet 8 jazz band that crooned tunes from the Roaring Twenties era. In addition, a corner of the floor was transformed into an antique living room where a tarot card reader set up shop. Her craft gained popularity during the 1920s when mobsters used their services to see into the future. The event also included a silent auction. Since 1986, the team’s annual gala event has raised over $6.4 million for charity. This year’s event benefitted the Mario Lemieux Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Penguins Foundation. Cheers could be heard from the blackjack tables signaling winning hands; laughter encompassed the roulette wheel as guests collected on winning bets; and everyone enjoyed chatting with their favorite players and tapping their feet to Louis Armstrong’s iconic songs. By all accounts, the Penguins should have been finished on April 5 when Ottawa Senators forward Zack Smith beat Pittsburgh goalie Matt Murray with a wrist shot that put the Senators up 3-0 just 3:33 into the second period. Except the 2015-16 Pittsburgh Penguins have proved they can never be counted out in a game. Especially the group general manager Jim Rutherford has assembled for the second half, one that has artfully mixed core mainstays with valuable in-season acquisitions and a stable of young guns promoted from the minor leagues. By the end of the middle frame, Patric Hornqvist and Sidney Crosby tallied to cut Pittsburgh’s deficit to one heading into the last period. Then not once, but twice, Carl Hagelin scored off feeds from Nick Bonino, and the Penguins held off a furious final flurry to net the 5-3 victory, the team’s 47th of the year. “It wasn’t the start we wanted,” head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters after. “I don’t think we were at our best, but we found a way to win, and found a way to get points.” Incredibly, that win marked the seventh time under coach Sullivan that the Penguins had trailed by two or more goals in a game, then came back to win. continued on page 78

Even more impressive, that was the second time in an eight-day span that the Penguins came from behind to win after trailing by a 3-0 score. “When you get down three goals, that’s a tough climb,” Sullivan said. “I love the resilience our guys showed to crawl back into it one goal at a time. For me, that has been part of the identity of this group moving forward. “They’ve shown that regardless of how the game goes, especially early on, we have the ability to come back. I think it’s an indication of the mindset of the group right now.” To better put into perspective the Penguins’ record of 7-11-3 in games when they trailed by two or more goals at any point, you have to consider that prior to Sullivan’s arrival, the Penguins had emerged victorious just once in 33 instances when down by two or more goals dating back to the beginning of the 2014-15 season. That’s right, just one win in 34 tries. And now they’ve done so seven times in 21 chances. The win against the Senators was the Penguins’ fifth when trailing after two periods. Last season, the Penguins were the only NHL club that failed to come back and win when down after two periods. “I think [all of the comebacks show] our character, that we believe in ourselves and in our ability to score goals,” Hagelin said after the win in Ottawa. Goals do figure to be tougher for the Penguins to come by in the playoffs, especially compared to the rate they filled the net down the stretch. But whether the scores are 5-2 or 2-1, the Penguins have to feel good knowing they have the moxie to quickly flip any deficit into a lead.

Here’s a look at the key players on the Rangers roster heading into Round One of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

HENRIK LUNDQVIST | G Lundqvist has been the Rangers’ go-to net-minder for 11 seasons, and he holds the franchise record for appearances, wins, shutouts and save percentage. The Rangers named Lundqvist their most valuable player for the eighth time in his career after he helped lead his team to their sixth-consecutive playoff appearance. The 2012 Vezina Trophy winner earned his team 35 wins and finished the regular season with a .920 save percentage and a 2.48 goals-against average. Lundqvist has been a vital component of the Rangers for a long time, and their success in the post season will rely heavily on his performance.

DERICK BRASSARD | C Brassard has consistently been a productive forward for the Rangers ever since being traded to New York by Columbus in 2013. The 28-year-old forward has finished in the team’s top-five point leaders for the past three seasons, and this was a record year for him when it came to putting the puck in the back of the net. He established a new career-high with 27 goals, which led the Rangers and smashed his previous best of 19. Brassard also finished the year with a team-leading eight power-play tallies. He has seven goals in 12 career playoff games against Pittsburgh. continued on page 93

MATS ZUCCARELLO | RW This season Rangers fans awarded Zuccarello with the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award for going “above and beyond the call of duty.” Zuccarello earned this honor by leading the team in points for the second time in his career with 61. Measuring in at just 5-foot-7, Zuccarello isn’t the biggest guy but makes up for it with his tremendous work ethic that helps the Rangers build momentum. Zuccarello has spent the majority of the past two seasons on a line with Brassard, and the two have driven New York’s offense as they finished as the team’s top-two scorers this season.

KEITH YANDLE | D This was Yandle’s first full season in New York as he was acquired from Phoenix at last year’s trade deadline. Yandle has been the Rangers’ most offensively productive defenseman, leading the team with 42 assists. He’s also been the most durable, as the 29-year-old has the secondlongest consecutive games played streak among defensemen in NHL history — appearing in 551 straight. He’ll be someone to watch on the power play, as he quarterbacks New York’s first unit and finished the regular season tied for first on the team with 22 power-play points.

J.T. MILLER | C Pittsburgh Hornets alumni J.T. Miller has had a breakout season with the Rangers, his fourth in the NHL. The 23-year-old forward reached career highs across the board — including games played (82), goals (22), assists (21), game-winning goals (5) and points (43). Miller finished tied for fifth on the team in scoring, and he became the first Ranger aged 22 or younger to score eight goals in eight games since Alexei Kovalev did in 1993-94. New York’s first-round pick (15th overall) in 2011, Miller is the highest-drafted player that played his youth hockey in the greater Pittsburgh region.

OVECHKIN HITS 50 AGAIN:

Capitals LW Alex Ovechkin reached the 50-goal plateau with style. Ovechkin netted a hat trick on April 8 at St. Louis and hit 50 goals in a campaign for the seventh time in his career. Ovechkin joined Mike Bossy (nine) and Wayne Gretzky (nine) among players with at least seven 50-goal seasons. Ovechkin also became the first player in NHL history to score 50 goals in three consecutive seasons on two different occasions (2007-08 through 2009-10 and 2013-14 through 2015-16).

PHILLY FINISHING KICK: The

Flyers clinched their spot in the playoffs with a 3-1 victory over the Penguins on April 9. The win completed a 14-6-2 run that netted 30 of a possible 44 points in 22 games beginning on Feb. 25, with the Flyers five points out of the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Philadelphia passed Carolina, New Jersey, Ottawa, Boston and Detroit in the standings on its climb. The Flyers completed similar late-season charges on the way to the playoffs in 2010 and 2014.

BACK AGAIN:

The Red Wings, Penguins, Blackhawks and Rangers entered this season as the only teams to have qualified for the postseason in five straight seasons. All four extended their streaks to at least six consecutive playoff appearances this season.

THE STREAK CONTINUES:

The Red Wings extended their playoff streak to 25 consecutive seasons by qualifying in 2015-16. Detroit tied St. Louis (1979-80 through 2003-04) for the third-longest playoff streak in NHL history, behold only Boston (29 from 1967-68 through 1995-96) and Chicago (28 from 1969-70 through 1996-97). The Penguins have the second-longest active streak at 10 consecutive seasons of appearing in the postseason.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and is funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the Sports Director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Here’s a look back at your 2015-16 Pittsburgh Penguins:

BIG ADDITIONS Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford was busy this past summer. His biggest move came when he acquired superstar winger Phil Kessel from Toronto (along with forward Tyler Biggs and defenseman Tim Erixon) in exchange for forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Nick PHIL KESSEL Spaling, defenseman Scott Harrington and a 2016 thirdround draft pick. Rutherford also made a couple of key transactions late in July, starting when he acquired forward Nick Bonino and defenseman Adam Clendening (later traded to Anaheim) and a 2016 secondround draft pick in exchange for forward Brandon Sutter and a 2016 third-round pick. Rutherford then agreed to terms with forward Eric Fehr on a three-year contract. Those moves — paired with the departures of other players including Paul Martin, Christian Ehrhoff, Blake Comeau, Steve Downie and Daniel Winnik — means the Penguins looked very different heading into this year.

SUPER DUPER One player they lost during the course of the season was a very special one. On Dec. 8, the Pittsburgh hockey community was sad to learn that Pascal Dupuis had announced that he is no longer able to play hockey due to health issues. continued on page 126

On Dec. 23, 2013, Dupuis tore his ACL and MCL in a game against the Ottawa Senators, and he was forced to miss the remainder of the season. It was discovered during rehab that Dupuis developed a blood clot in his knee, and he was put on blood thinners. Dupuis worked extremely hard to be able to return to the lineup the following season, but after just 16 games it was discovered that the blood clot had traveled to his lung. He was forced to continue taking blood thinners and was unable to participate in the rest of the season. He attempted one last comeback to start the 2015-16 season, but after being forced to leave the ice on Nov. 6 and Dec. 1 for health reasons, he made the decision to step away from the game. Dupuis made his NHL debut in 2000 with the Minnesota Wild, and he went on to play in 871 NHL games — earning a total of 409 points (190G-219A). Dupuis was traded to Pittsburgh in 2007 as part of the Marian Hossa deal, and went on to play nine seasons with the Penguins — winning the Stanley Cup with them in 2009. He was awarded the first-ever Dapper Dan Courage Award on Feb. 17. This award is given to a Pittsburgh-area athlete who demonstrates a willingness to always preserve and serves as an inspiration to his teammates.

COACHING CHANGE Despite their stacked roster, Pittsburgh underachieved through the opening months of the season. While they had a 15-10-3 record, their offense and compete level was lacking. MIKE A team loaded with offensive talent SULLIVAN ranked 27th in the league in offense, while the power play was tied for 26th. That’s when Rutherford decided to make a coaching change. On Dec. 12, Mike Sullivan — who was in his first season as head coach of Pittsburgh’s American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/ continued on page 129

Scranton, leading his team to an 18-5 record and first place in the Atlantic Division — replaced Mike Johnston as head coach of the Penguins. Sullivan’s job was clear: make the Penguins fulfill their potential. To do that, he wanted them to play a certain way and mold an identity built on certain characteristics: speed; compete; resilience. Sullivan knew that it would take time to build that identity. He preached to his players not to focus on the result, but focus on the process. It took some time, but the Penguins finally began to fulfill that identity. After losing their first four games under Sullivan, the team began to turn it around. They bought into Sullivan’s approach and got rewarded. They began scoring in bunches, playing strong defensively and displaying an incredible resiliency in games — particularly when they got down. They got hot going into the All-Star break, continued to gain momentum following it and peaked during the month of March — where they put together a six-game win streak. Most importantly, the Penguins climbed from outside of the playoff picture into a postseason berth.

MVP AND NORRIS Sidney Crosby had just five points in October and ranked tied for 148th in the NHL scoring race at the end of that month. However, he resorted back to his usual dominant self under Sullivan. The captain keyed Pittsburgh’s second-half turnaround and was named team MVP as a result. Crosby was the NHL’s leading scorer since Dec. 12 with 66 points (30G-36A). Overall, Crosby finished third in league scoring with 85 points (36G-49A), including a league-best 21 points in March when he was continued on page 131

named the NHL’s ‘First Star’ of the month. Crosby had points in 15 of 16 games in March, helping the Penguins go 12-4 during their busiest stretch of the campaign. At the other end of the rink, Kris Letang also had a slow start with just one goal in his first 24 games. But by the end of April, he had career highs in goals (16), assists (51) and points (67) and made a serious case for the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman. What’s even more impressive is that his engine doesn’t seem to stop as he averaged the fourthhighest ice time in the NHL (26:56 minutes per game). He hit the 30-minute mark five times in his last 13 regular-season games.

YOUNG GUNS Other crucial contributors to Pittsburgh’s second-half turnaround were Bryan Rust, Tom Kuhnhackl and Scott Wilson. The three Penguins draft picks were sparks for the bottom-two forward lines, bringing speed, energy and a blue-collar approach while chipping in offensively as well. As a result, they all earned two-year, one-way contract extensions. In total, 12 players who began the season with Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League either made the permanent jump to Pittsburgh — including more youngsters in Conor Sheary, Derrick Pouliot and Oskar Sundqvist — or provided a positive cameo appearance. continued on page 132

MIDSEASON ACQUISITIONS Rutherford made a few key midseason trades, starting when the Penguins traded Rob Scuderi to Chicago for Trevor Daley on Dec. 14. Daley immediately began thriving on Pittsburgh’s blue line, bringing mobility and puck-moving ability. His best game of the year was on March 20, when he scored and dished out two assists in a 6-2 win over Washington. But the Penguins really started sprinting after they acquired speedster Carl Hagelin from Anaheim for David Perron and Adam Clendening on Jan. 14. Hagelin was immediately exceptional. He earned an assist in four of his first five games with the team, but really hit his stride down the stretch when he recorded 19 points in his last 20 games. Of the 10 total goals he scored with the Penguins, six were game-winners. Justin Schultz was the Penguins’ final acquisition. Edmonton traded him to Pittsburgh for a third-round draft pick on Feb. 27, and the defenseman fit right in with the Penguins’ style of play. He finished the season with eight points (1G-7A) and a plus-7 in 18 games with Pittsburgh after recording 10 points (3G-7A) and a minus-22 in 45 games with Edmonton.

SERIES STORYLINES PENGUINS VS. RANGERS By: Michelle Crechiolo

The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers meet in the playoffs for the third-straight postseason. New York won the first two meetings — eliminating the Penguins in five games last spring, and in a seven-game series in 2014 that saw the Rangers come back from a 3-1 deficit. Overall, this will be the seventh time that the Penguins and Rangers have met in the playoffs. The Penguins have won four of the six all-time playoff meetings. The only team the Penguins have faced more often is the Washington Capitals (eight meetings). Here are a few of the main storylines to follow as the series progresses:

HIGH EXPECTATIONS When talking about the Penguins recently, Hall of Famer Paul Coffey said “I wouldn’t want to play them in the first round, I can tell you that.” That’s because the Penguins went on an absolute tear down the stretch, going on an 8-1 run to end the season and recording wins in 14 of their last 16 games and 18 of their final 23. It was the perfect finish to Pittsburgh’s in-season turnaround that began when the club promoted Mike Sullivan to head coach on Dec. 12 and had a much different feel than last season — where the Penguins limped into the postseason, both literally and figuratively. the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference, where they drew a matchup with the Rangers — who had won the Presidents’ Trophy as the league’s top team. The Penguins have flipped the script. This time, they are the ones who entered the playoffs as the NHL’s hottest team while the Rangers struggled down the stretch. And though the Penguins certainly look like a serious contender, they can’t plan the parade just yet. Sullivan said his team has been in a playoff mindset for a while now, which means trying to win each game as it comes. He thinks it takes a short-term focus and not getting ahead of themselves to make sure they stay on task and focus on the game right in front of them. That’s what they’ve done and what they must continue to do.

CHANGING IDENTITIES Another way things have changed between the two teams is how they match up. The Rangers’ biggest strength for several years was their defense, backstopped by elite netminder Henrik Lundqvist. They finished last season with the NHL’s third-lowest goals-against and their ability to transition quickly out of their end and play an up-tempo, speed game was too much for Pittsburgh to handle the last couple seasons — especially with top-four defensemen Kris Letang, Olli Maatta and Christian Ehrhoff all out due to injury last year. However, this year the Rangers have struggled in their own zone. They have had trouble with breakouts as well as a lot of continued on page 144

breakdowns in coverage. As a result, they haven’t moved down the ice with their usual ease and New York’s goals-against dropped to 15th in the league while their penalty kill — which was sixth last season — fell to 26th. Meanwhile, the Penguins have become a much quicker team and their offense — which ranked 19th last season — jumped to third under Sullivan, who got the club back to its high-scoring ways. They’ve built an identity based on resilience, compete and speed, and other teams have remarked how difficult they are to defend with the way they skate — and the Rangers have been one of those clubs who have had a tough time.

CHANGING SIDES One key reason for that change is that Carl Hagelin has switched sides, joining the Penguins in midseason this year after helping the Rangers eliminate Pittsburgh each of the past two years. Last spring, Hagelin scored the overtime, series-clinching goal in Game Five to end Pittsburgh’s season. He had six points (4G-2A) in 12 playoff games against Pittsburgh while playing for the Rangers, who traded him to Anaheim last summer. New York’s loss was Pittsburgh’s gain. Hagelin proved to be an incredible addition to the Penguins’ lineup, producing 27 points (10G-17A) in 37 games following his acquisition. He scored Six game-winning goals with Pittsburgh, the most ever by an in-season Penguins acquisition. But surprisingly, it’s not his numbers that have been his biggest contribution to this team. It’s his skating. Hagelin is arguably the fastest player in the NHL and he has completely changed the dynamic of the Penguins. Sullivan has taught his team to play a speed game, and Hagelin has been the most crucial factor to that component of their identity. His speed is a lot to handle for anybody, but especially for a Rangers team that will be without captain Ryan McDonagh for at least the start of the Round One and has a couple of veteran blueliners that have lost a step in Dan Girardi and Dan Boyle.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

to inform guests of the situation and any instructions as applicable. All exits and emergency exits are posted with appropriate signage.

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: Peoples Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Items lost at events are held in storage for thirty (30) days and then either disposed of or donated to an appropriate charity.

A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. Richland Community Park Richland Twp. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.
