THE SERIES [VS] RANGERS

Tonight the Penguins and New York Rangers meet in Game Five of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series. After a 3-1 victory at Madison Square Garden in Game Three last Tuesday, the Penguins took a 2-1 series lead into Game Four on Thursday. Should a Game Six be needed, it will be played in New York on Monday, and a Game Seven, if necessary, would be back here at CONSOL Energy Center on Wednesday. . . This is the third consecutive season the teams have met in the playoffs, with the Rangers eliminating the Penguins in seven games in 2014 and five games in 2015. . . This game is the 17th consecutive Penguins playoff game contested against the Rangers, a team record. The Penguins faced the Washington Capitals in 13 consecutive post-season games in 1994 and 1995. . . Rookie Matt Murray became the youngest goaltender in team history to start a playoff game and made 16 saves in the Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Game Three win in New York. Jeff Zatkoff had played each of the first two games, helping the Penguins to a 5-2 victory in Game One but coming out with the loss in Game Two as the Rangers earned a 4-2 win. . . continued on page 14

Matt Cullen scored his first Stanley Cup playoff game-winning goal in nine years when he beat Henrik Lundqvist early in the third period of Game Three for a 2-1 lead. His last came vs. Atlanta in 2007 when he was a member of the Rangers. . . Sidney Crosby scored his first power play goal in 28 playoff games in the victory, and Kris Letang added an empty-net goal for the Penguins, who were 11-5 all-time in the playoffs at Madison Square Garden after that win. . . Marc-Andre Fleury remained out on a day-today basis as the series headed for Game Four. . . Ryan McDonagh returned to the Rangers’ lineup for Game Three after missing the first two games of the series with a broken hand, although New York defenseman Dan Girardi remained out. . . Rick Nash had the lone New York goal in Game Three, a short-handed goal. . . Phil Kessel had an assist in Game Three and joined Patric Hornqvist and Crosby with four points each in the series heading into Game Four.

Evgeni Malkin, who missed the first game of this series, returned to the lineup in Game Two and had assists in each of his first two games of the series. Both came on the power play, as the Penguins had produced four power-play goals through three games — one more than they scored in their previous 12 playoff games against the Rangers. . . The Pittsburgh penalty killers had stopped 11 of 12 New York power plays through three games. The only Rangers’ power-play goal at that point was the five-on-three goal scored by Derek Stepan in Game One. . . Bryan Rust also returned to the Pittsburgh lineup for Game Two after missing the previous seven games with a lower body injury. . . Tom Kuhnhackl’s first career playoff goal in Game One came short-handed, just like his first NHL regular-season goal. He’s the first active player since Fedor Tyutin to accomplish that feat. Tyutin scored his regular season goal with the Rangers in 2003-04 and his playoff goal with Columbus in 2014 — against the Penguins. . . Both Murray and Zatkoff won their first career playoff starts in this series, something that hadn’t been done by two Pittsburgh goalies in the same season since Les Binkley (against Oakland) and Al Smith (against St. Louis) in 1970. . . Kessel attempted a team-high 33 shots in the first three games of this series, with a team-high 17 reaching the net. . . The Penguins won more than 50 percent of their faceoffs in each of the first three games of the series, with Cullen winning 56.9 percent, Crosby 54.8 percent and Nick Bonino 52.7 percent . . . Letang was averaging 28:11 of ice time per game, almost six minutes more than the next-closest teammate, Trevor Daley (22:38).

WIN NATIONAL TITLE By Candace Kourounis

The Pittsburgh Penguins 18U Elite team made history after winning the Tier 1 Division National Title on Monday, April 4 in San Jose, California. With the win, the Penguins became the first team in Pittsburgh history to bring home a USA Hockey Tier 1 National title after achieving a 3-0 triumph over Culver Academy (Indiana) in the championships. Seeded eighth, the Penguins Elite, who play out of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex fell to the Chicago Fury 6-5 in overtime in their opening game of the tournament, which ran from March 31 – April 4, 2016. Pittsburgh was able to rebound in their second game as they went on to shut out the San Jose Jr. Sharks 6-0. An impressive feat also saw the Penguins upset number one ranked Shattuck St. Mary’s 3-2, which is coincidentally the same school Penguins star Sidney Crosby attended. The two wins earned Pittsburgh a birth in the quarter-finals, which proved to be an easy test as the Penguins beat the Cape Cod Whalers by a commanding score of 7-3. The semi-finals saw Pittsburgh beat the North Jersey Avalanche 2-1 in exciting fashion, as Penguins captain Logan Stork ended the game 3:09 into overtime, advancing Pittsburgh to the Championship game against Culver Academy. During the championship game, Chad Veltri of the Penguins Elite stopped all 22 shots faced as Pittsburgh went on to shut out Culver 3-0. Connor Quinn, Jordan Timmons and Eric Cooley all scored to lift the Penguins to a national championship. “It’s just a great day for Pittsburgh hockey,” said head coach Kevin Quinn. “Over the years, a lot of teams have put in tremendous amounts of time to develop Pittsburgh hockey…they are a real solid group of kids and I had a great coaching staff…it’s a tremendous accomplishment.” Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins 18U Elite team on a remarkable season!

Patric Hornqvist goes to the net hard. That always reaps bumps and bruises. But it often reaps reward, too. Game One of the ongoing playoff series against the New York Rangers generated a big payoff for the Swedish winger. Hornqvist got his first postseason hat trick, scoring twice from in tight and then finding the empty net late as the Penguins won, 5-2. Hornqvist also hit Sidney Crosby with a pinpoint pass that put the Penguins captain behind the Rangers defense for a breakaway goal. The raucous CONSOL Energy Center crowd showered the ice with hats after Hornqvist netted his third goal. “It was a big moment,” Hornqvist said. “I never scored a hat trick in the playoffs before. But the main thing is, we got the big win. “The first period wasn’t as good as we wanted, but we got that late goal and then I think we took over the game and played the right way.” Indeed, the Rangers enjoyed the better of the play in the first period of Game One. But Hornqvist got the game’s first goal with 18 seconds left in that period. He set up Crosby’s goal with 1:04 left in the second, giving the Penguins a 2-0 lead at the second intermission. Hornqvist’s game is very uncomplicated. He takes a beating for the cause. “Some nights are worse than others,” said Hornqvist, 29. “But you get used to it. I like to be [in front of the net]. You pick up some greasy goals, so I’m going to go there.” Hornqvist plays on a line with Crosby and winger Chris Kunitz. Hornqvist is very aware who butters the bread. “Playing with Sid helps a lot,” Hornqvist said. “He’s the best player in the world, and he can make things happen from nothing. Me and [Kunitz] try to work hard down low and get the puck to Sid, then try to get open. “Sid is so smart and sees the play so well. He’s always one or two plays ahead. Sometimes I don’t see the play, but you get used to it. He’s just a great player.” Kunitz, meanwhile, is a kindred performer. “Me and [Kunitz] are very similar players,” Hornqvist said. “We have to read off each other. One goes in front of the net, the other goes in the high slot.” continued on page 31

Hornqvist had a solid regular season, notching 22 goals, 29 assists and a plus-15 mark in 82 games. Not only is Hornqvist playing with two solid linemates, but he, Crosby and Kunitz are often on the ice with defenseman Kris Letang, who enjoyed a career year with 67 points. “Tanger has been so good the last 3-4 months,” Hornqvist said. “Since coach [Mike] Sullivan took over, he’s been the best defenseman in the league. “He’s always up in the rush. That’s why it’s so hard to defend against us. All our defensemen are joining the rush. That makes it so much easier. There’s always one more option when we enter the zone.” When the Penguins get the puck down low, however, that’s when Hornqvist shines. His 5-foot-11, 189-pound frame is tough for foes to deal with. Goaltenders get frustrated when Hornqvist sets up shop near the blue paint. Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqivst seems to get particularly irritated when his crease gets invaded. “I don’t think any goalie likes it,” Hornqvist said. “But we have to make sure we get there. [Lundqvist is] a really good goalie when he sees the puck. He plays pretty deep in his net, too. Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including ten straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

Jason Botterill is in his second season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WB/S Penguins have made the playoffs all six years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 39, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. MIKE SULLIVAN HEAD COACH

Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Assistant coach Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization. In his current role, he oversees the club’s defensemen and its penalty killing unit. Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams was a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses. A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder. Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond. Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

TAKES PENGUINS BACK TO THE ROARING TWENTIES When guests arrived for the second annual Aces & Ice Casino Night presented by Trib Total Media on March 22, they took a CONSOL Energy Center elevator back in time to a Pittsburgh Penguins’ Roaring Twenties Speakeasy! A hostess dressed in flapper attire greeted guests and accompanied them on the elevator. En route, she gave the guests the Speakeasy password. When they arrived on the first level, guests then walked down a hallway resembling an alley in 1920s New York City or Chicago — complete with a 1924 T-model truck, lamp posts and brick walls. Meeting them at the door stood a gangster-looking doorman donning wing-tipped shoes, striped pants and a gun holster. Guests then used their knowledge of the password — “Mario Sent Me” — and gained entry to the Penguins Speakeasy Casino continued on page 75

on the CONSOL Energy Center floor. Penguins’ players looked dapper in their 1920s attire while they served as dealers at the blackjack, craps, roulette and spin wheel tables. Over 300 guests, mostly donning themed attire, enjoyed the casino games, a variety of food stations, signature 1920s beverages and black and white silent movies on a large end zone screen. The event featured live music from the Swingtet 8 jazz band that crooned tunes from the Roaring Twenties era. In addition, a corner of the floor was transformed into an antique living room where a tarot card reader set up shop. Her craft gained popularity during the 1920s when mobsters used their services to see into the future. The event also included a silent auction. Since 1986, the team’s annual gala event has raised over $6.4 million for charity. This year’s event benefitted the Mario Lemieux Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Penguins Foundation. Cheers could be heard from the blackjack tables signaling winning hands; laughter encompassed the roulette wheel as guests collected on winning bets; and everyone enjoyed chatting with their favorite players and tapping their feet to Louis Armstrong’s iconic songs. A roaring great time was had by all!

As Pittsburgh heads into a critical Game Five versus the New York Rangers in its first-round series, one thing is a sure bet for head coach Mike Sullivan. Setting a lineup card is becoming a more difficult task by the game. The Penguins’ forward and defensive ranks are almost back to full health, and that is challenging Sullivan to find his best combinations in order to “put together a lineup, each and every night, that we believe gives us the best chance to win.” That phrase has been used often by Sullivan when talking about lineup decisions on a nightly basis. And it’s one he and his coaching staff have a firm understanding of. Sullivan and his coaching staff convened following a Game Two loss to New York to discuss line combinations. In Game One, the Penguins experimented with a combination of 11 forwards and seven defensemen. In Game Two, Evgeni Malkin made his return from injury to play for the first time since March 11 and Bryan Rust returned from a two-week absence. More changes ensued. The one word Sullivan stressed that would change from Game Three going forward — continuity. continued on page 78

“We’ll settle into something so that there is more continuity,” Sullivan said via conference call on April 17. “With ‘Geno’ in the lineup, as I’ve said all along, when the time came to put him back in the lineup it would provide options for us as far as how we’ve used guys.” The Penguins game plan headed into Game Three seemed to have some of that much-needed chemistry at this time of year infused up and down the lineup. The Chris Kunitz-Sidney Crosby-Patric Hornqvist trio, one of the best lines in hockey this season, stayed intact. The same went for the Carl Hagelin-Nick Bonino-Phil Kessel group that led Pittsburgh to an NHL-best 12 wins in March; and a Tom Kuhnhackl-Matt Cullen-Bryan Rust unit that proved to be a positive possessiondriving group in long stretches during the regular season. That left one line — the Malkin unit — that had three players that hadn’t skated together at length before. Those new wingers for Malkin, Eric Fehr and Conor Sheary, will be counted on to get on the same page with Malkin, who has proven himself as a bigtime playoff performer in years past (1.10 PPG). If that combination works for Sullivan, it may solve all those difficult lineup decisions he has faced moving forward. “We feel as though it’s a good challenge, “Sullivan said. “We obviously have a player in our lineup that makes us a better team.”

Here’s a look at the key players on the Rangers roster heading into Round One of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

HENRIK LUNDQVIST | G Lundqvist has been the Rangers’ go-to net-minder for 11 seasons, and he holds the franchise record for appearances, wins, shutouts and save percentage. The Rangers named Lundqvist their most valuable player for the eighth time in his career after he helped lead his team to their sixth-consecutive playoff appearance. The 2012 Vezina Trophy winner earned his team 35 wins and finished the regular season with a .920 save percentage and a 2.48 goals-against average. Lundqvist has been a vital component of the Rangers for a long time, and their success in the post season will rely heavily on his performance.

DERICK BRASSARD | C Brassard has consistently been a productive forward for the Rangers ever since being traded to New York by Columbus in 2013. The 28-year-old forward has finished in the team’s top-five point leaders for the past three seasons, and this was a record year for him when it came to putting the puck in the back of the net. He established a new career-high with 27 goals, which led the Rangers and smashed his previous best of 19. Brassard also finished the year with a team-leading eight power-play tallies. He has seven goals in 12 career playoff games against Pittsburgh. continued on page 93

MATS ZUCCARELLO | RW This season Rangers fans awarded Zuccarello with the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award for going “above and beyond the call of duty.” Zuccarello earned this honor by leading the team in points for the second time in his career with 61. Measuring in at just 5-foot-7, Zuccarello isn’t the biggest guy but makes up for it with his tremendous work ethic that helps the Rangers build momentum. Zuccarello has spent the majority of the past two seasons on a line with Brassard, and the two have driven New York’s offense as they finished as the team’s top-two scorers this season.

KEITH YANDLE | D This was Yandle’s first full season in New York as he was acquired from Phoenix at last year’s trade deadline. Yandle has been the Rangers’ most offensively productive defenseman, leading the team with 42 assists. He’s also been the most durable, as the 29-year-old has the secondlongest consecutive games played streak among defensemen in NHL history — appearing in 551 straight. He’ll be someone to watch on the power play, as he quarterbacks New York’s first unit and finished the regular season tied for first on the team with 22 power-play points.

J.T. MILLER | C Pittsburgh Hornets alumni J.T. Miller has had a breakout season with the Rangers, his fourth in the NHL. The 23-year-old forward reached career highs across the board — including games played (82), goals (22), assists (21), game-winning goals (5) and points (43). Miller finished tied for fifth on the team in scoring, and he became the first Ranger aged 22 or younger to score eight goals in eight games since Alexei Kovalev did in 1993-94. New York’s first-round pick (15th overall) in 2011, Miller is the highest-drafted player that played his youth hockey in the greater Pittsburgh region.

BUSINESS AS USUAL:

The Blues and Blackhawks playing three consecutive one-goal games to open their first-round series should have surprised no one. The Blues’ 1-0 overtime victory in Game One, Chicago’s 3-2 win in Game Two and St. Louis’ 3-2 win in Game Three ran the teams’ recent history to seven one-goal games in the teams’ last nine postseason meetings, including five that had gone to overtime.

BACK AGAIN:

St. Louis’ appearance in the 2015-16 playoffs was the franchise’s 40th, the most among the six teams that entered the NHL in the 1967 expansion (Los Angeles, Minnesota, Oakland, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and St. Louis).

EVERYONE’S DANGEROUS:

The MinnesotaDallas first-round matchup featured a meeting of the two teams that tied for the league lead in number of players with at least 10 regular-season goals (12 apiece).

FOUR SCORE AND SEVEN:

The postseason field included seven teams that have qualified for the playoffs in each of the last four seasons (Anaheim, Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh and St. Louis).

HOME AT LAST: Dallas’ 4-0

victory in Game One against Minnesota was the Stars’ first victory in a Game One at American Airlines Center since the facility opened for the 2001-02 season. The Stars had been 0-3 in Game Ones at AAC.

POWER SURGE: The

Capitals went 8-for-17 on the power play in grabbing a three-games-to-none lead in their first-round series with the Flyers. Washington scored two power-play goals in Game Two, the first time the Caps had managed that since April 26, 2009 (Game Six of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Rangers.) Washington followed that up with five powerplay goals in a 6-1 victory in Game Three.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and is funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the Sports Director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Here’s a look back at your 2015-16 Pittsburgh Penguins:

BIG ADDITIONS Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford was busy this past summer. His biggest move came when he acquired superstar winger Phil Kessel from Toronto (along with forward Tyler Biggs and defenseman Tim Erixon) in exchange for forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Nick PHIL KESSEL Spaling, defenseman Scott Harrington and a 2016 thirdround draft pick. Rutherford also made a couple of key transactions late in July, starting when he acquired forward Nick Bonino and defenseman Adam Clendening (later traded to Anaheim) and a 2016 secondround draft pick in exchange for forward Brandon Sutter and a 2016 third-round pick. Rutherford then agreed to terms with forward Eric Fehr on a three-year contract. Those moves — paired with the departures of other players including Paul Martin, Christian Ehrhoff, Blake Comeau, Steve Downie and Daniel Winnik — means the Penguins looked very different heading into this year.

SUPER DUPER One player they lost during the course of the season was a very special one. On Dec. 8, the Pittsburgh hockey community was sad to learn that Pascal Dupuis had announced that he is no longer able to play hockey due to health issues. continued on page 126

On Dec. 23, 2013, Dupuis tore his ACL and MCL in a game against the Ottawa Senators, and he was forced to miss the remainder of the season. It was discovered during rehab that Dupuis developed a blood clot in his knee, and he was put on blood thinners. Dupuis worked extremely hard to be able to return to the lineup the following season, but after just 16 games it was discovered that the blood clot had traveled to his lung. He was forced to continue taking blood thinners and was unable to participate in the rest of the season. He attempted one last comeback to start the 2015-16 season, but after being forced to leave the ice on Nov. 6 and Dec. 1 for health reasons, he made the decision to step away from the game. Dupuis made his NHL debut in 2000 with the Minnesota Wild, and he went on to play in 871 NHL games — earning a total of 409 points (190G-219A). Dupuis was traded to Pittsburgh in 2007 as part of the Marian Hossa deal, and went on to play nine seasons with the Penguins — winning the Stanley Cup with them in 2009. He was awarded the first-ever Dapper Dan Courage Award on Feb. 17. This award is given to a Pittsburgh-area athlete who demonstrates a willingness to always preserve and serves as an inspiration to his teammates.

COACHING CHANGE Despite their stacked roster, Pittsburgh underachieved through the opening months of the season. While they had a 15-10-3 record, their offense and compete level was lacking. MIKE A team loaded with offensive talent SULLIVAN ranked 27th in the league in offense, while the power play was tied for 26th. That’s when Rutherford decided to make a coaching change. On Dec. 12, Mike Sullivan — who was in his first season as head coach of Pittsburgh’s American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/ continued on page 129

Scranton, leading his team to an 18-5 record and first place in the Atlantic Division — replaced Mike Johnston as head coach of the Penguins. Sullivan’s job was clear: make the Penguins fulfill their potential. To do that, he wanted them to play a certain way and mold an identity built on certain characteristics: speed; compete; resilience. Sullivan knew that it would take time to build that identity. He preached to his players not to focus on the result, but focus on the process. It took some time, but the Penguins finally began to fulfill that identity. After losing their first four games under Sullivan, the team began to turn it around. They bought into Sullivan’s approach and got rewarded. They began scoring in bunches, playing strong defensively and displaying an incredible resiliency in games — particularly when they got down. They got hot going into the All-Star break, continued to gain momentum following it and peaked during the month of March — where they put together a six-game win streak. Most importantly, the Penguins climbed from outside of the playoff picture into a postseason berth.

MVP AND NORRIS Sidney Crosby had just five points in October and ranked tied for 148th in the NHL scoring race at the end of that month. However, he resorted back to his usual dominant self under Sullivan. The captain keyed Pittsburgh’s second-half turnaround and was named team MVP as a result. Crosby was the NHL’s leading scorer since Dec. 12 with 66 points (30G-36A). Overall, Crosby finished third in league scoring with 85 points (36G-49A), including a league-best 21 points in March when he was continued on page 131

named the NHL’s ‘First Star’ of the month. Crosby had points in 15 of 16 games in March, helping the Penguins go 12-4 during their busiest stretch of the campaign. At the other end of the rink, Kris Letang also had a slow start with just one goal in his first 24 games. But by the end of April, he had career highs in goals (16), assists (51) and points (67) and made a serious case for the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman. What’s even more impressive is that his engine doesn’t seem to stop as he averaged the fourthhighest ice time in the NHL (26:56 minutes per game). He hit the 30-minute mark five times in his last 13 regular-season games.

YOUNG GUNS Other crucial contributors to Pittsburgh’s second-half turnaround were Bryan Rust, Tom Kuhnhackl and Scott Wilson. The three Penguins draft picks were sparks for the bottom-two forward lines, bringing speed, energy and a blue-collar approach while chipping in offensively as well. As a result, they all earned two-year, one-way contract extensions. In total, 12 players who began the season with Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League either made the permanent jump to Pittsburgh — including more youngsters in Conor Sheary, Derrick Pouliot and Oskar Sundqvist — or provided a positive cameo appearance. continued on page 132

MIDSEASON ACQUISITIONS Rutherford made a few key midseason trades, starting when the Penguins traded Rob Scuderi to Chicago for Trevor Daley on Dec. 14. Daley immediately began thriving on Pittsburgh’s blue line, bringing mobility and puck-moving ability. His best game of the year was on March 20, when he scored and dished out two assists in a 6-2 win over Washington. But the Penguins really started sprinting after they acquired speedster Carl Hagelin from Anaheim for David Perron and Adam Clendening on Jan. 14. Hagelin was immediately exceptional. He earned an assist in four of his first five games with the team, but really hit his stride down the stretch when he recorded 19 points in his last 20 games. Of the 10 total goals he scored with the Penguins, six were game-winners. Justin Schultz was the Penguins’ final acquisition. Edmonton traded him to Pittsburgh for a third-round draft pick on Feb. 27, and the defenseman fit right in with the Penguins’ style of play. He finished the season with eight points (1G-7A) and a plus-7 in 18 games with Pittsburgh after recording 10 points (3G-7A) and a minus-22 in 45 games with Edmonton.

With 579 points in 750 regular-season NHL games, there is no denying that Phil Kessel has had a productive offensive career — but his playoff stats are even more impressive. The winger is a point-per-game producer during the postseason. At this time of year, every team is reaching their peak — so the style of play becomes elevated in comparison to the regular season. “It’s just another level,” Kessel explained. “I think everyone has to raise their game up. It’s a different speed and quickness out there, and it’s obviously a step above.” Kessel has certainly been able to raise his level of competition when it comes to playoffs. The first-year Penguin tallied four points in Pittsburgh’s first three playoff games. He earned an assist in Game One, scored two highlight-reel goals on the power play in Game Two, and set up Sidney Crosby on the man-advantage with a beautiful play in Game Three. “I just go out there and play the game and just try to do whatever I can to help the team win,” Kessel said. “I just kind of do the same thing I always do. Don’t change anything and just try my best and try to do whatever I can.” With his natural speed, it’s been no issue for Kessel to meet the pace of playoff play — but his teammates and coaches all agree that it’s his shot that makes him such an offensive threat. continued on page 143

“He’s got one of the best shots in the league,” linemate Nick Bonino said about Kessel. “It seems like in the playoffs he’s a timely goal-scorer.” Kessel’s other linemate, Carl Hagelin, shares the exact same sentiment. “He’s got one of the best shots in the league. And in the playoffs, all it takes is one good shot that goes in and you could be a hero,” said Hagelin, who knows from experience as the former Ranger scored the series-clinching overtime winner in Game Five of New York’s First Round matchup with the Penguins last year. “We’re going to need him to keep scoring. That’s what it comes down to. He’s a threat out there, and he’s not fun to play against when he comes down with speed on the right wing and rips hard shots.” The 28-year-old Wisconsin native was acquired by the Penguins from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the summer of 2015, and the coaching staff are satisfied with what he’s brought to the lineup. He finished the regular season third on the team in scoring with 59 points (26+33) in 82 games. “I think he’s a good player that can shoot the puck,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “He can go to the net. the game the right way for us right now, and I think that’s why he’s having success. He’s a dangerous player off the rush, and the way he’s playing right now in the offensive zone as far as getting involved down low, getting himself inside the dots when he has an opportunity with the puck I think he’s a real threat. “That’s how he’s played for us here over the last couple of months. He’s really adapted his game to our style of play and I think that’s what’s allowed him to be successful with this group. As far as his production historically, I think it just speaks to his talent level. He’s a really talented guy. He can shoot the puck, he can score goals, and I think his passing is underrated.” Kessel’s setup to Crosby in Game Three certainly got attention. With Crosby standing at the side of the net, almost completely blocked from sight by Henrik Lundqvist and his defensemen, Kessel managed to put a bullet of a pass through all that traffic right onto the stick of Crosby, which was flat on the ice. Crosby didn’t react, it all happened so fast. It just bounced off his blade and into the back of the net. “I didn’t even see it,” Crosby admitted. “It was a great pass. I didn’t think [Kessel] could get it through. It just hit my stick.” Shooting, passing, scoring — Kessel can do it all for the Penguins. And needless to say, the Penguins are happy to have him on their side this postseason.

“And the home …of the … Sioux.” The national anthem always ends that way at North Dakota games. The two games North Dakota played at the 2016 Frozen Four, April 7-9 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, were no exception. Thousands upon thousands of North Dakota fans saw to that during North Dakota’s eighth appearance at college hockey’s championship weekend in the last 12 seasons. Officially, the institution’s nickname is the “Fighting Hawks,” the result of the NCAA having declared the former “Fighting Sioux” monicker too politically incorrect for continued use. But the storied program’s rabid supporters aren’t having any of that. They wear Sioux jerseys and Sioux hats and wave Sioux banners and flags and chant “Let’s Go Sioux” at the appropriate spot in the pep band’s periodic prodding. Their passion for and loyalty to the Sioux name is seemingly rivaled only by their capacity to consume alcohol. As one North Dakota fan insisted, “Hawks” is merely an acronym for “How About We Keep Sioux.” Welcome to the Frozen Four. North Dakota had nine NHL draft picks on the roster when it captured the school’s eighth national championship, 5-1, over Quinnipiac. None of the Penguins’ prospects made it to the Frozen Four, but one of ETHAN PROW the organization’s newest additions was honored during Frozen Four festivities when the American Hockey Coaches Association All-America teams were announced. St. Cloud State senior Ethan Prow, signed by the Penguins after the Huskies’ season ended two wins short of the Frozen Four, was named a first-team West All-America selection. The AHCA selects East and West AllAmerica teams, which means the coaches anointed Prow as one of four blueliners nationally to earn first-team recognition. Prow had already played five games with the AHL Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins by the time Caggiula was spotted on TV in Philadelphia.

Quinnipiac junior forward Sam Anas signed with Minnesota as a free agent and junior defenseman Devon Towes signed with the New York Islanders (fourth round/2014). Boston College junior forward Adam Gilmour signed with Minnesota (fourth round/2012), as did sophomore forward Alex Tuch (18th overall/2014). Denver sophomore forward Danton Heinen signed with Boston (fourth round/2014). They were among the parade of players who turned professional when their college seasons ended. Talent has flowed through the pipeline at a rate that has contributed to at least 30 percent of the NHL’s players having college ties for six consecutive seasons, according to College Hockey, Inc. The website reported that 294 former NCAA players made up 30 percent of the NHL in 2015-16, including 33 percent of all players who made their NHL debuts and 31 percent of all rookies. Among them were Sabres center Jack Eichel, who dazzled for Boston University at the 2015 Frozen Four in Boston, and Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, who won a national championship with Union at the 2014 Frozen Four in Philadelphia. And there’s more where they came from. The NHL’s Central Scouting Bureau has three college players or college-committed players ranked in the top 10 among North American skaters available for the 2016 Entry Draft. BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. DESIGNATED DRIVERS Guests of legal drinking age who hold a valid driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license and wish to sign up to be a designated driver, may visit Guest Services at section 104 for specific Designated Driver booth locations during Pittsburgh Penguins games. In return for safe and sober transportation of their group from CONSOL Energy Center, the designated driver will receive a coupon redeemable for a complimentary soft drink during the game.

DOORS OPEN Doors generally open one (1) hour prior to the start of an event at CONSOL Energy Center, including Pittsburgh Penguins games. Please check the individual event page for further information. CONSOL Energy Center has a no re-entry policy; once you leave the building during an event, you will not be permitted to return.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

to inform guests of the situation and any instructions as applicable. All exits and emergency exits are posted with appropriate signage.

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: Peoples Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Pennsylvania State Law prohibits the sale of alcohol to all persons under the age of 21. Guests are required to show proper identification and proof of age when purchasing alcoholic beverages.

LOST AND FOUND If an item is lost or found during an event please see the Guest Services office located outside section 104. Guests inquiring about lost items after an event should call 412.804.7903. Items lost at events are held in storage for thirty (30) days and then either disposed of or donated to an appropriate charity.

RE-ENTRY POLICY Exit and re-entry is not permitted at CONSOL Energy Center.

SECURITY In the interest of guests and staff safety, a search process is required for all events in order to prevent guests from bringing unauthorized and prohibited items into the arena.

SMOKING POLICY Smoking is not permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center.

Small purses, camera cases, binocular cases and diaper bags will be permitted, however, all items that do not pass security must be returned to vehicles.

A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. In September 2015, the last North Park McCandless dek rink was completed Paul J. Scuillo II Memorial Park Bloomfield bringing the total Renzie Park McKeesport completed rinks to 12. Richland Community Park Richland Twp. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.
