NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES [VS] CAPITALS
The Penguins and Washington Capitals meet here at CONSOL Energy Center for Game Four of their second round series. The series was tied at 1-1 heading into Game Three here on Monday. Game Five is set for May 7 in Washington. . . The Capitals won Game One at home on April 28, 4-3, on T.J. Oshie’s goal at 9:33 of overtime. That goal not only won the game but completed a hat trick for Oshie, the eighth by an opposing player in Penguins’ playoff history — and third by a Capitals player. Dino Ciccarelli did it in Game Four, 1992 and Alex Ovechkin in Game Two, 2009. . . The Penguins earned a 2-1 victory in Game Two on Eric Fehr’s goal with 4:28 to play. Matt Murray made 23 saves in Game Two to become the first goalie to win four of his first five Stanley Cup playoff starts since Washington’s Michael Neuvirth did so in 2011. . . Ovechkin, the NHL’s leading goal-scorer this season, had no goals and one assist in seven games against the Penguins this season heading into Game Three. . . The Penguins went 0-for-5 on the power play in Game Two and were 0-for-7 in the series at that point. . . The Penguins’ Olli Maatta was knocked out of Game continued on page 14

Two on his first shift after being hit by former teammate Brooks Orpik. Maatta’s status for Game Three was questionable. Orpik received a three-game suspension for the hit. Kris Letang played 35:22 in Game Two as the Penguins were forced to use just five defensemen. . . Evgeni Malkin ran his playoff scoring streak to six games (3+6) after assisting on Fehr’s game-winner. It was his longest playoff points streak since earning points in each of the first eight games of the 2013 post-season (3+11). . . Fehr had zero game-winning goals in his first 40 Stanley Cup games, but he had two of them in his last four games after beating his former team in Game Two. . . Nick Bonino set up a Carl Hagelin goal in Game Two to extend his scoring streak to four games, his longest ever in the post-season, and give him eight points for the 2016 playoffs. That matched his career-high production for one playoff year, achieved in 2014 with Anaheim.
THE PENGUINS
Before facing the Capitals in Game Three, the Penguins had won 11 consecutive games when either Conor Sheary, Tom Kuhnhackl or Bryan Rust registered a point. . . Pittsburgh had won 42 percent or less of its faceoffs in three of its last four games heading into Game Three. . . Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each played their 107th Stanley Cup playoff game in Game Two, tying Mario Lemieux for second place all-time behind Jaromir Jagr (140) in team history. . . Letang had his career-high four-game playoff continued on page 16

points streak snapped in Game Two. . . After their Game Two win in Washington, Bonino was tied with Crosby for second in team scoring in these playoffs with eight points, one behind Malkin and one ahead of Phil Kessel. . . Hagelin had points in each of his last three games (2+2) before skating in Game Three. . . The Penguins were 16-8 in 24 all-time home playoff games against Washington prior to hosting Game Three. That included a 7-2 record in the last nine here, with both Capitals’ wins coming in overtime. At that point, the last regulation playoff win here by Washington was on April 19, 1996 (5-3). . . Prior to Game Three, the Penguins had won five of their last six home playoff games against Washington in which the Capitals scored first. . . The Penguins’ 4-3 loss in Game One was their eighth consecutive playoff overtime loss. Their last such win came in Game Six at the NY Islanders in 2013, when Orpik’s goal eliminated the Islanders. . . Q & A SPOTLIGHT DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? “In 2009, my husband, Jack, moved to Pennsylvania for work. My daughter and I stayed behind in Arizona to sell the house and let her finish the school year. Jack didn’t know anyone in PA, but he embraced the Penguins with a madness that has not faded. I think having something to do so many nights a week while we were apart was a savior for him. During the Jack and Sheryl Barnes Stanley Cup Final, Jack was at a Penguins game watching at his apartment and I was boarding a plane. I landed to a text message of ‘We won the Stanley Cup!’ It sounds lame, but it was a very happy moment... and our first PA bonding experience!” — Sheryl Barnes, Section 105, Season Ticket Holder Since 2014
“I was watching Game Six of the 1991 Final at home when the Penguins won 8-0 to win the Cup. My sister and I immediately jumped in the car and headed towards the airport to greet the champs, but unfortunately we were not the only ones that had that idea. We ended up sitting in traffic a good 10 miles before the airport exit… behind everyone else that had the same idea. It ended up being a party on the parkway since traffic was bumper to bumper and there was no movement in sight. Complete strangers (all Penguins fans) were out of their cars yelling, screaming, cheering and just having a good time. It was something that I will never forget!” — Cris Zottola-Bassett, Section 233, Season Ticket Holder Since 2015 continued on page 20

“In 1991 and 1992, I was in my childhood living room with my parents and brother counting down the moments. In ‘09, we were at the game in Detroit. I remember with one minute left Jim and Andrea Augustine in Detroit I handed my wife our before Game Seven of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final camera and said ‘I have been waiting my entire life to watch this in person and I just want to enjoy the moment. Can you take the pictures?’ It was a moment I will never forget and could only be topped by watching the Penguins win one at home.” — Jim Augustine, Section 106, Season Ticket Holder Since 1995
“I was only a kid when they won the first two Cups. My parents left me at home to go to Pittsburgh and celebrate the homecoming of the team. In ‘09, I left my parents at home and celebrated the team’s homecoming at the parade!” —Abby Hale, Section 201, Season Ticket Holder Since 2015
“I worked on the grounds crew at Three Rivers Stadium and the Pirates were home in both ‘91 and ’92. We had a TV in the dugout where we sat during the games. For the ‘09 Cup, I was in my game room with my wife and three-week-old daughter (who is named Sydney by the way). I was told by my wife that I could not yell or I would wake her. I had to jump up and down in silence if you can imagine that.” — Keith Gillen, Section 208, Season Ticket Holder Since 1986
“I was in my basement in ’91 and ’92 watching with my dad. In ’09, I was watching with my family Keith Gillen raising Lord Stanley at at home. I loved watching Three Rivers Stadium in the 90’s Penguins games with my dad. We always had debates over different parts of the game.” — Lisa Crider, Section 106, Season Ticket Holder Since 1987

PENGUINS PROFILE
EVGENI
MALKIN By: Mark Madden
28
You get hurt. Your team goes 14-2 without you. Do you have something to prove upon your return? Evgeni Malkin, given his resume, probably didn’t. But Malkin played it safe and assumed a big role in the Penguins’ elimination of the New York Rangers in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Malkin returned from an upper-body injury in Game Two. It took him a few games to truly get his skates back under him. But the Russian center totally destroyed the Rangers in Game Four, racking up two goals and two assists in a 5-0 win that gave the Penguins a three-games-to-one series lead. “Of course, I think [about it] when I’m not playing and the team wins [14] games, and when I came back we lost the first one,” Malkin said. “It’s very upsetting for me. “But I know I can help the team. I know I can help the power play. And my line can play better. I know I can help the team to win every game.” Malkin had two goals and five assists in four games against the Rangers. He finished the series centering left wing Chris Kunitz and right wing Eric Fehr, and that combination stayed together for the start of the second round vs. Washington. Malkin scored in Game One at D.C., but the Penguins lost 4-3 in overtime. “I like it,” Malkin said of his new line. “We played good against the Rangers. [Kunitz] is a good, tough forward. Good shot, good speed. Fehr has good reach. “We have good chemistry. We just need to play [together] more.” Malkin was satisfied with his first-round performance against the Rangers: “Not bad. I’m happy with the first round. It was a good series for us. “I scored a couple goals, but I think I can play better. I want to play better. But it’s the whole team: Four lines, defensemen, goalie.” Malkin has always been a catalyst on the Penguins’ power play, perhaps the unit’s primary force. That was certainly true in the first round, as Malkin’s return sparked the PP to an 8-for-21 output. The Penguins’ 38.1 conversion percentage led the NHL going into the second round of the post-season. The Penguins and Capitals are meeting in the playoffs for the first time since 2009, which seems hard to believe given the successful nature of both teams. continued on page 31

continued from page 29
“It’s a long time,” Malkin agreed. “But we played five games in the regular season. This is playoffs, so it’s a little bit different. But [Washington] is a good team. One of the best teams in the league.” Malkin is facing off with his superstar teammate from the Russian national side, Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin led the NHL this season with 50 goals. When asked if he and Ovechkin were on bad terms, as had been rumored, Malkin laughed and said, “We’re always on good terms. We’re friends. We’ve spent time in Moscow a couple times. “But it’s playoffs. It’s a different time, and we’re playing against each other. It’s no friends on the ice. It doesn’t matter what’s going on off the ice, it’s different on the ice.” Malkin doesn’t think the Penguins have to alter the way they play against Washington: “Speed game. Ton of shots. Skate to the net. Our game is always the same.” Malkin had an excellent regular season despite being injured. The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder had 27 goals and 31 assists in 57 games. He was plus-1. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including ten straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for more than 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to ten straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August, 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH
Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. Whether it’s listening in on coach Mike Sullivan’s pregame speech, meeting to Carl Hagelin at the airport the night he was traded to Pittsburgh, getting a tour of Beau Bennett’s childhood home, or traveling to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, with Sidney Crosby as he trains for the upcoming season, In The Room delivers unique, unprecedented coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The show has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as the best sports series in the Mid-Atlantic region in both 2014 and 2015. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team they’ve never seen before.”

BONINO’S PLAY ONE OF MANY
KEYS FOR PITTSBURGH By: Dave Uhrmacher
Timing. It’s a trait that all hockey players covet. When you have your timing down, things tend to go well. When you don’t, a season can drag as the seemingly neverending search for answers rolls on. For center Nick Bonino, it has been a tale of two halves. After the Penguins acquired Bonino and Adam Clendening in a July trade with Vancouver in exchange for Brandon Sutter, the center was pegged as the replacement at center on Pittsburgh’s third-line, and would come as one that would provide steady defensive play along with an offensive track record that included a 22-goal season with Anaheim in 2013-14. The optimism from Pittsburgh’s offseason, when general manager Jim Rutherford acquired Bonino, star winger Phil Kessel, Eric Fehr and Matt Cullen, was alive and well. But for Bonino, the season’s first half was a bit of a struggle. On Jan. 1, Bonino found himself 35 games in with just three goals and six assists. Bonino had grasped the defensive side of the game but had struggled to find the scoresheet consistently, something he had come to expect following his output the previous two seasons. He needed something to get him going. He needed his timing back. continued on page 78
77
continued from page 77
New head coach Mike Sullivan’s up-tempo system helped some, but a hand injury kept the 28-year old center out of the lineup for 17 games from Jan. 15-Feb. 24. With just 23 games remaining once he returned from injury, Bonino knew he needed to get on track and that he had to do it quickly. An unfortunate injury to Evgeni Malkin on March 11 in Columbus granted Bonino a golden opportunity to find his form — centering speedy wingers Carl Hagelin and Kessel while Malkin was out of the lineup. Bonino’s performance over the season’s final 15 games was outstanding. His 16 points (5+11) trailed only Sidney Crosby (18) for the most for Pittsburgh in the season’s final 15 games between Mar. 13–Apr. 9. The Hagelin-Bonino-Kessel unit produced more than 28 percent of the team’s goals during that span. Pittsburgh’s 26 points were six more than the next closest teams (Anaheim and Philadelphia) in that same span. Bonino’s successful play in the season’s stretch run was one of the key components that allowed Pittsburgh to lock up the second-most points in the Eastern Conference and the fourth most in the NHL. Now in the middle of the chase for the Stanley Cup, a glance at Sullivan’s lineup card will show Bonino centering Pittsburgh’s second line, flanked by Hagelin and Kessel. Sullivan found a combination that has worked. And Bonino has his timing back.

SCOUTING THE
CAPITALS By: CJ Harvey
Here’s a look at the key players on the Capitals roster heading into Round Two of the 2016 Stanley Cup® Playoffs.
BRADEN HOLTBY | G In their series win against Philly, Braden Holtby continued to show why he is a favorite for the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goaltender as he gave up just five goals in six games and posted two shutouts. However, Pittsburgh did notch 16 goals against the Caps netminder in five meetings during their regular-season series — which the Penguins won 3-2. The Penguins have been able to rattle some elite netminders this year, but anything can happen in the playoffs — and Holtby has been a premier goaltender in the postseason with a .940 career playoff save percentage.
ALEX OVECHKIN | LW Over the past decade, no one in the NHL has been better at scoring goals than Alex Ovechkin. He reached the 50-goal plateau for a third straight season (and seventh time overall) this year, winning his fourth consecutive Rocket Richard Trophy. The 30-year-old Russian continued finding the net in Washington’s opening-round series win over Philadelphia, picking up five points (3+2). Kris Letang and Pittsburgh’s defensemen will certainly have their hands full with the superstar. The game’s best sniper is lethal on the power play, and at 6-foot-3, 239 pounds, he loves to be a punishing physical presence. continued on page 93
91
continued from page 91
JOHN CARLSON | D The 26-year-old defenseman endured the first injury of his career this season. When he sat out on Dec. 28 against Buffalo, the 2008 first-round draft pick watched his consecutive games-played streak end at 412. But despite missing 25 total games over the second half, Carlson picked up right where he left off during the first round of the playoffs — averaging over 25 minutes a game in the first round against Philly and scoring on the power play in each of the first three games. He will be a player to watch on the man-advantage.
NICKLAS BACKSTROM | C It was Nicklas Backstrom who led Washington with seven points (2+5) in their opening-round series with the Flyers. The center also scored the game-winner in Game Six, propelling his team to the second round. Backstrom excelled on special teams, finishing with four power-play assists. The 28-year-old Swede is a tremendous playmaker, and as many of the Penguins noted, everything runs through him on the man-advantage as he’s a threat to pass or shoot. During the regular season, Backstrom — who was a first-time All-Star — collected 50 assists for the sixth time in his nine-year career.
T.J. OSHIE | RW It’s been a tremendous first season in Washington for the American-born forward. After being acquired from St. Louis during the offseason — where he had spent the first seven seasons of his career — the former Blue found chemistry on the right wing alongside longtime linemates Ovechkin and Backstrom. The 29-yearold scored a career-high 26 goals and passed the 50-point mark for the third straight year. Oshie appeared in all five regular-season matchups with the Penguins this year and netted three goals, two of which were on the power play. He brings a mixture of skill and feistiness to the ice.

AROUND THE NHL
By: Mike Prisuta
PRACTICE MAKES (ALMOST)
PERFECT: Tampa Bay
entered the second round ranked No. 1 in the NHL postseason in penalty-killing, having snuffed out 24 of 25 Detroit power-play opportunities (96 percent) in round one. The Lightning also led the NHL in total penalties (42), minor penalties (35) and penalty minutes (127) in the first round. The Detroit-Tampa Bay series produced 253 combined penalty minutes, the most of any series in the opening round.
AS LONG AS IT TAKES:
The Islanders’ sixgame decision over the Panthers in the opening round included three overtime games, all of which were won by New York. The Islanders entered the second round with an all-time overtime record of 33-14 in the postseason for an all-time best .702 winning percentage in overtime playoff games.
WELCOME BACK: San Jose
having gotten that far in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011. San Jose advanced this season thanks in part to the contributions of two assistant coaches who were once Penguins teammates, Bob Boughner (defenseman, 1999-00 and 2000-01) and Johan Hedberg (goaltender, 2000-01 through 2002-03).
UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY:
St. Louis opened at Dallas in the second round, the first time the Blues played Games One and Two of a series on the road since 2009 (Vancouver). St. Louis advanced past the first round for the 18th time in franchise history and for the first time since 2012. The Blues haven’t reached a Conference Final since 2001.
TRY, TRY, TRY AGAIN:
Nashville’s win in Game Seven at Anaheim completed the Predators’ third victory in a series in franchise history. Nashville has never won two series in a playoff year.
advanced to the second round for the first time since 2013 after failing to make the playoffs in 2015. The Sharks had previously been something of a fixture in the second round,

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture in the educational space. Understanding the importance of KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE technology in the classroom, the foundation developed a one-of-a-kind program that would combine the latest in tablet technology with the ever changing landscape in today’s classroom. This program became Tablets in Education. Since its inception, Tablets in Education has provided over 180 schools and educational programs in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, Washington and Westmoreland counties with a total of 3,900 Kindle Fire tablets. The Foundation has purchased over 225,000 apps and specialized content for the program. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and is funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. HOCKEY
ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:7.5”
HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

NICK BONINO
2015.16 REGULAR
SEASON RECAP By: Ashley Vesci and CJ Harvey
Here’s a look back at your 2015-16 Pittsburgh Penguins:
BIG ADDITIONS Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford was busy this past summer. His biggest move came when he acquired superstar winger Phil Kessel from Toronto (along with forward Tyler Biggs and defenseman Tim Erixon) in exchange for forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Nick PHIL KESSEL Spaling, defenseman Scott Harrington and a 2016 thirdround draft pick. Rutherford also made a couple of key transactions late in July, starting when he acquired forward Nick Bonino and defenseman Adam Clendening (later traded to Anaheim) and a 2016 secondround draft pick in exchange for forward Brandon Sutter and a 2016 third-round pick. Rutherford then agreed to terms with forward Eric Fehr on a three-year contract. Those moves — paired with the departures of other players including Paul Martin, Christian Ehrhoff, Blake Comeau, Steve Downie and Daniel Winnik — means the Penguins looked very different heading into this year.
SUPER DUPER One player they lost during the course of the season was a very special one. On Dec. 8, the Pittsburgh hockey community was sad to learn that Pascal Dupuis had announced that he is no longer able to play hockey due to health issues. continued on page 126
PASCAL DUPUIS

continued from page 125
On Dec. 23, 2013, Dupuis tore his ACL and MCL in a game against the Ottawa Senators, and he was forced to miss the remainder of the season. It was discovered during rehab that Dupuis developed a blood clot in his knee, and he was put on blood thinners. Dupuis worked extremely hard to be able to return to the lineup the following season, but after just 16 games it was discovered that the blood clot had traveled to his lung. He was forced to continue taking blood thinners and was unable to participate in the rest of the season. He attempted one last comeback to start the 2015-16 season, but after being forced to leave the ice on Nov. 6 and Dec. 1 for health reasons, he made the decision to step away from the game. Dupuis made his NHL debut in 2000 with the Minnesota Wild, and he went on to play in 871 NHL games — earning a total of 409 points (190G-219A). Dupuis was traded to Pittsburgh in 2007 as part of the Marian Hossa deal, and went on to play nine seasons with the Penguins — winning the Stanley Cup with them in 2009. He was awarded the first-ever Dapper Dan Courage Award on Feb. 17. This award is given to a Pittsburgh-area athlete who demonstrates a willingness to always preserve and serves as an inspiration to his teammates.
COACHING CHANGE Despite their stacked roster, Pittsburgh underachieved through the opening months of the season. While they had a 15-10-3 record, their offense and compete level was lacking. MIKE A team loaded with offensive talent SULLIVAN ranked 27th in the league in offense, while the power play was tied for 26th. That’s when Rutherford decided to make a coaching change. On Dec. 12, Mike Sullivan — who was in his first season as head coach of Pittsburgh’s American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/ continued on page 129

Scranton, leading his team to an 18-5 record and first place in the Atlantic Division — replaced Mike Johnston as head coach of the Penguins. Sullivan’s job was clear: make the Penguins fulfill their potential. To do that, he wanted them to play a certain way and mold an identity built on certain characteristics: speed; compete; resilience. Sullivan knew that it would take time to build that identity. He preached to his players not to focus on the result, but focus on the process. It took some time, but the Penguins finally began to fulfill that identity. After losing their first four games under Sullivan, the team began to turn it around. They bought into Sullivan’s approach and got rewarded. They began scoring in bunches, playing strong defensively and displaying an incredible resiliency in games — particularly when they got down. They got hot going into the All-Star break, continued to gain momentum following it and peaked during the month of March — where they put together a six-game win streak. Most importantly, the Penguins climbed from outside of the playoff picture into a postseason berth.
MVP AND NORRIS Sidney Crosby had just five points in October and ranked tied for 148th in the NHL scoring race at the end of that month. However, he resorted back to his usual dominant self under Sullivan. The captain keyed Pittsburgh’s second-half turnaround and was named team MVP as a result. Crosby was the NHL’s leading scorer since Dec. 12 with 66 points (30G-36A). Overall, Crosby finished third in league scoring with 85 points (36G-49A), including a league-best 21 points in March when he was continued on page 131

named the NHL’s ‘First Star’ of the month. Crosby had points in 15 of 16 games in March, helping the Penguins go 12-4 during their busiest stretch of the campaign. At the other end of the rink, Kris Letang also had a slow start with just one goal in his first 24 games. But by the end of April, he had career highs in goals (16), assists (51) and points (67) and made a serious case for the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman. What’s even more impressive is that his engine doesn’t seem to stop as he averaged the fourthhighest ice time in the NHL (26:56 minutes per game). He hit the 30-minute mark five times in his last 13 regular-season games.

SCOTT WILSON
YOUNG GUNS Other crucial contributors to Pittsburgh’s second-half turnaround were Bryan Rust, Tom Kuhnhackl and Scott Wilson. The three Penguins draft picks were sparks for the bottom-two forward lines, bringing speed, energy and a blue-collar approach while chipping in offensively as well. As a result, they all earned two-year, one-way contract extensions. In total, 12 players who began the season with Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League either made the permanent jump to Pittsburgh — including more youngsters in Conor Sheary, Derrick Pouliot and Oskar Sundqvist — or provided a positive cameo appearance. continued on page 132
131
continued from page 131
MIDSEASON ACQUISITIONS Rutherford made a few key midseason trades, starting when the Penguins traded Rob Scuderi to Chicago for Trevor Daley on Dec. 14. Daley immediately began thriving on Pittsburgh’s blue line, bringing mobility and puck-moving ability. His best game of the year was on March 20, when he scored and dished out two assists in a 6-2 win over Washington. But the Penguins really started sprinting after they acquired speedster Carl Hagelin from Anaheim for David Perron and Adam Clendening on Jan. 14. Hagelin was immediately exceptional. He earned an assist in four of his first five games with the team, but really hit his stride down the stretch when he recorded 19 points in his last 20 games. Of the 10 total goals he scored with the Penguins, six were game-winners. Justin Schultz was the Penguins’ final acquisition. Edmonton traded him to Pittsburgh for a third-round draft pick on Feb. 27, and the defenseman fit right in with the Penguins’ style of play. He finished the season with eight points (1G-7A) and a plus-7 in 18 games with Pittsburgh after recording 10 points (3G-7A) and a minus-22 in 45 games with Edmonton.

SMART GUY
By: Michelle Crechiolo
Near the end of the Penguins’ opening-round series with the New York Rangers, head coach Mike Sullivan was complimentary of Nick Bonino’s play — both individually and alongside linemates Carl Hagelin and Phil Kessel. “His play for quite some time now has been really strong in a lot of areas,” Sullivan said. “He’s stepped in on that line and has helped us maintain some consistent offensive production throughout our lineup and some of the injuries we’ve endured down the stretch. He plays on one of the power-play units, he’s a big part of our penalty kill. “He’s a real responsible player. He can play at both ends of the rink. He’s a good face-off guy. We use him in a lot of capacities and I think his play over the last six, seven, eight weeks has been the best that it’s been since I’ve been here. He seems to be getting better with each game that he plays, so we hope that trend continues.” It certainly has, as Bonino was without question Pittsburgh’s best player in the ice during Game One of their second-round matchup with Washington on April 28 at Verizon Center — finishing with a goal and an assist in the Penguins’ 4-3 overtime defeat. The day before, Bonino said that while he was happy with his play overall, he felt there was one area in particular he could improve. “The one thing I can do is shoot a little bit more,” he told me. “I think I only had three shots in the first series.” continued on page 143

Bonino did just that. In the first period, he undressed defenseman Dmitry Orlov with a beautiful move. After he put the puck on net, defenseman Ben Lovejoy was there to collect it and put it home. Bonino then scored a huge goal in the third period to tie the game and force the extra session. “I think we were shooting a lot,” Bonino said. “I think we had a shot or a chance every shift. We were happy with how we played as a line and I think that’s what we’ve been waiting for, and hopefully it continues.” Bonino’s offensive ability has been evident for a while now. In addition to what he’s done so far this postseason, Bonino finished with 19 points (6+13) in his last 23 games of the regular season after returning from an upper-body injury that forced him to miss 17 straight. Before going down, Bonino had posted three goals and 10 points in his first 40 games of the season. “At the beginning of the year, I don’t think I was playing bad at all. I think I was playing the role I was asked to play with Mike [Johnston],” Bonino said. “It was more of a shutdown, defensive role.” The Penguins had acquired Bonino from Vancouver during the offseason, where he had been traded the previous summer from Anaheim — the team he had spent the first four-plus years of his career with. Adjusting to Pittsburgh wasn’t necessarily the easiest for Bonino, who had to go through a coaching change as well. “It’s been three teams in three years,” he said. “It’s never easy. But it was just a little bit of an up-and-down start for our team.

We had a good team, but we weren’t performing. No one was scoring, really. We had great goaltending and that saved us. With a fresh face like Sully, I think we were all able to just kind of reset and start over and it’s been great.” One person who knew exactly what Bonino was capable of is Lovejoy, who was his teammate with the Ducks. “He’s one of the smartest guys I’ve played with in the NHL,” Lovejoy said. “He’s able to make plays with his skill and his brain. He’s not the fastest skater. But he is always in the right position, both offensively and defensively. He is able to move guys around with his skill and with his mind. “I was so excited last summer when we picked him up. He’s one of the best guys I’ve played with and just an awesome teammate in the room. I’m really happy for the success he’s been having.” A lot of it has come while skating with Hagelin and Kessel. After Bonino had been back in the lineup for a few weeks, the Penguins lost Evgeni Malkin with an upper-body injury — and the center slotted into his spot between those two. The move worked out perfect, as the three of them had immediate chemistry and became arguably the Penguins’ strongest line down the stretch. “When Geno went down, it opened up a little bit more opportunity offensively and you get to play with guys like Hagelin and Phil,” Bonino said. “I think it complements my game. It’s just been a good little run here.”

ESTABLISHING PLAYOFF HOCKEY
PERSPECTIVE By: Mike Prisuta
It was a round during which much was learned and much was confirmed from the Penguins, who kept getting better at getting to their game during a five-game, first-round elimination of the Rangers. The specific components were as varied as they were valuable for the Penguins, who entered the second round against Washington looking to continue building on what they’d established in the first round against New York. Those included:
— A COMMITMENT TO BEING A TOUGH TEAM TO SCORE AGAINST, AND TO GENERATING OFFENSE FROM DEFENSE: “They play a real sound defensive game and when they get the opportunity with the firepower they have they can finish,” Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault said.
— CONFIDENCE: “Going through March I think we went through a lot of different games,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “We went through games where we had to score in bunches to win. We went through tight games, 2-1 games. We really had to buckle down to get wins. We had to win different ways and I think that built a lot of confidence and when you get in the playoffs that’s a big part of it. continued on page 155

continued from page 153
“You look at this series [against the Rangers], I think special teams were huge. You look at our goalie situation, both guys who had to go in and play [Jeff Zatkoff and Matt Murray] have done a great job. I think all those little tests along the way help you in these situations.”
— CHEMISTRY: “We have established a chemistry amongst the group between a veteran group of guys that have established themselves as NHL players and then these young guys that have come up [from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton] that have fit into this team with that established group,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “I think both groups have been good for one another. “We have a great veteran leadership group that helped these guys. But I also think our kids helped the veteran guys with their enthusiasm and their energy and just their approach and how they come to the rink every day. I think that’s infectious. “I know our core guys, they really like what these kids have brought to the table as far as helping this team win. Right now we really like the chemistry that we have.” — BECOMING BATTLE-TESTED IN THE POSTSEASON: “Every series is a new animal but I think as a group it’s a good experience for us,” center Matt Cullen said of the Rangers series. “We understand there’s going to be ups and downs in a series but if we focus on playing our game and we stick with it, we like what we have.” continued on page 157

— BELIEF: “I think it’s in our room and it’s the way we play that will manage whether we win or lose,” defenseman Kris Letang said. — PERSPECTIVE: “It’s exciting, obviously,” goaltender Matt Murray said after his shutout in Game Four. “It’s pretty cool and pretty emotional. I’ll definitely go call my parents and share that with them. But after tonight it really doesn’t matter going forward. Honestly, we have to focus on the next one.”
— A FIVE-MAN-UNIT APPROACH TO PLAYING DEFENSE: “I think a lot of credit goes to our forwards with the way they track, the forechecks that they put the Rangers’ defense under, the duress they put them under is something that really helps our full team game,” defenseman Ian Cole said. “That’s something we really need to rely on going forward, use our team speed, get in on their D and then track back. When they do make a play and get it out of the zone, track back hard. It makes our reads as defensemen that much easier and makes us able to close gaps a little quicker.”
— PLAYING “THE RIGHT WAY,” IN SULLIVAN’S ESTIMATION, FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES: “We didn’t have extended stretches in the

defensive zone, and the times that we did I thought our guys defended hard. Part of that is blocking shots and protecting the scoring area. Our stick detail was really good as far as getting sticks on pucks and making it hard for them to generate offense. “For me, that’s playoff hockey.”
