GAME
NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES [VS] LIGHTNING
The Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning open the Eastern Conference Final with the first two games here at CONSOL Energy Center. It is the second Stanley Cup Playoff series between the teams, as Tampa Bay rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to eliminate Pittsburgh in seven games in the opening round of the 2011 playoffs — a series in which both Sidney Crosby (concussion) and Evgeni Malkin (knee) were injured and did not play. . . During the 2015-16 regular season, the Lightning won all three games between the teams, outscoring the Penguins, 15-9. . . Tampa Bay earned a 5-4 overtime victory at home on Jan. 15 when Vladimir Namestnikov completed the hat trick by scoring at 2:11 after defenseman Anton Stralman had tied the game with 4:39 to play. Patric Hornqvist had a goal and two assists in the Tampa Bay victory. . . Back in Tampa on Feb. 5, Ondrej Palat and Stralman each had two goals in a 6-3 Lightning victory, with Hornqvist contributing a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh. . . The only game between the teams played here in Pittsburgh this season was on Feb. 20, when Stralman and Tyler Johnson were among the Lightning scorers and the Penguins’ Tom Kuhnhackl scored his first NHL goal short-handed in a 4-2 Tampa Bay win. . . Prior to this season, the Penguins had continued on page 14

won 11 of 12 regular-season games against Tampa Bay. In fact, the Feb. 20 victory by the Lightning snapped a nine-game road losing streak against the Penguins in the regular season that began back in November of 2010. . . The Lightning have won three consecutive playoff games here in Pittsburgh, taking Game Two (5-1), Game Five (8-2) and Game Seven (1-0) in that 2011 series. The Penguins’ power play went 1-for-35 in that series. . . The Penguins advanced to the Conference Final by eliminating the Washington Capitals in six games on May 10, thanks to Nick Bonino’s goal at 6:32 of overtime for a 4-3 victory here in Pittsburgh. The Penguins defeated the New York Rangers in the first round in five games. . . The Lightning defeated the Detroit Red Wings in five games in the opening round of the playoffs, then beat the New York Islanders in five games in the second round. . . Tampa Bay reached the 2015 Stanley Cup Final before losing to Chicago in six games. This is their third appearance in the Conference Final in the last six seasons; the Penguins have reached the Conference Final for the fourth time in nine seasons.
THE PENGUINS
Bonino’s goal was the second overtime goal of the Washington series for the Penguins, as Patric Hornqvist had won Game Four on home ice with a goal at 2:34. . . The line of Bonino, Phil Kessel and Carl

Hagelin accounted for all four goals in the clinching victory over the Capitals, as Kessel snapped his longest playoff goal drought — five games — with a pair of goals. The Penguins played three OT games in the Washington series (losing one), the first time that has happened since the 2009 series against Washington, which also included two Pittsburgh victories. . . This playoff year marked the first time the Penguins won consecutive potential clinching games on home ice since doing so against the Rangers and Flyers in 2008. . . Rookie goaltender Matt Murray ran his playoff record to 7-2 after making 36 saves in Game Six against the Capitals; that included a 4-0 record at home. . . Defenseman Olli Maatta returned to the Penguins’ lineup for Game Six against Washington after missing three games with an upper body injury. . . Evgeni Malkin has 19 goals and 42 points in 31 career regular season games against Tampa Bay, an average of 1.35 points per game. He missed the final two games against Tampa Bay this season with injuries. . . Kessel was leading the Penguins in playoff scoring with five goals and 12 points as this series began, followed by Sidney Crosby (3+7) and Bonino (2+8). . . Pittsburgh had won four straight home playoff games coming into this series, its longest home winning streak in the post-season since taking the final home game against the Islanders and all three home games against Ottawa in 2013. Pittsburgh last won five straight home playoff games in 2009 on the way to its third Stanley Cup.

Q & A SPOTLIGHT DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME PLAYOFF RITUALS? “I have so many. If the last game I attended was a win, I will ride on the same side of the escalators as I did the previous game. If they lost, I change it up and ride the other one. In addition, I always give anyone at work wearing the opponents’ colors grief. During the 2009 Cup run, I even brought in shirts and made people change.” — Wendy Bishop, Section 232, Season Ticket Holder Since 2013
“We put a big screen and projector up and watch all of the playoff games outside of the house.” — George Gardner, Section 107, Season Ticket Holder Since 2015
“My brother has a ‘hero’ shirt he has to wear, with a playoff towel hanging over his left shoulder during the George Gardner game. I have a UPS looking Penguins shirt that has a proven winning track record that started with Game Seven.” — Robert Schmidt, Section 231, Season Ticket Holder Since 2005 “Before every playoff game, I make sure to play a game of NHL on my Xbox against the team we will be playing that night. I try and predict the outcome based on the results of my game.” — Corey Donaldson, Section 121, Season Ticket Holder Since 2015 “My co-worker makes brownies for the office whenever the Penguins win a playoff game.” — Kevin Keller, Section 232, Season Ticket Holder Since 2007

“I’ve been using the same towel since 1992.” — Desiree Parsons, Section 225, Season Ticket Holder Since 2005
“I do a blind pick from my closet for the jersey that I will wear for the game. In Desiree Parsons addition, we have to enter the same gate, see the same ticket taker, use the same escalator — the same routine as the day we first entered CONSOL Energy Center. When we were still at the Civic Arena, we basically did the same thing. Also, we start a goal poll, which is where you bet a buck and you choose cards, and on the card is your player. If your player scores first, you win the pot.” — Crystal Kitchener, Section 233, Season Ticket Holder Since 2001
“Since I live and work in Capitals territory, I always show a slide of the Penguins logo to my students and play the Penguins’ entrance theme music. I wear Penguins gear to class on game days. I also remind the Caps fans in my class that we have won a Stanley Cup!!! So we need to keep beating them so I can continue to joke with my students.” — Jamie Winters, Section 117, Season Ticket Holder Since 2002
“Same thing nearly every game. We arrive about two hours before the game. We visit with the parking attendant (Mike) and then enter the arena (visit with security team along the way) and head to the Lexus Club to have Kathy Stone drinks with our favorite bartenders (Bob, Bobby and Mike). Then we head down and visit with Yvonne (security at the First Niagara Club), get some food then head to our seats where we visit with our section security/ ushers (Matt, Rick, Marshall). Then we settle in for warmups and the game. We have made so many friends among all of the arena staff.” — Kathy Stone, Section 101, Season Ticket Holder Since 2001

THROUGH SUMMER MONTHS By Roberto Bagnato
The arrival of spring and warmer weather typically means the beginning of summer sports and activities and the end of hockey season. At the UMPC Lemieux Sports Complex, hockey is played 365 days a year with the arrival of spring signaling the start of the Penguins Selects season. The Selects teams first held tryouts in early April with some of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania’s top youth talent making the final cut. In total, 14 teams of players were selected for the following divisions and age groups: 2009 MITE Elite and AAA
2005 Peewee Elite and AAA
2008 MITE Elite and AAA
2004/2005 Peewee Female
2007 Squirt Elite and AAA
2004 Peewee Elite
2006/2007 Squirt Female
2003 Bantam Female
2006 Squirt Elite and AAA Over a seven week period, the players are conditioned with 10 hours of on-ice practice focusing on skill development led by experienced head, assistant and goalie coaches. Additionally, the players also undergo 10 off-ice dryland training sessions where speed, stamina and endurance are worked on. Collectively, these sessions work towards improving the individual skill of each player while also working on team concepts and competencies. The on-ice and off-ice training sessions are put to the test during each team’s culminating tournament. The 2004-07 boys’ teams will be competing in the North American Spring Showcase Tournament on June 3-5, 2016 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The boys will be competing against 300 of North America’s strongest teams in the AA, AAA, and ELITE divisions. Meanwhile, the girls’ teams will also be heading to Toronto on May 20-22, 2016 to compete in the Victoria Day Spectacular. Congratulations to all Penguins Selects players for making their respected teams! Good luck at your final tournaments in Toronto!

PENGUINS PROFILE
TREVOR
DALEY By: Mark Madden

If there was a turning point in the second-round series between the Penguins and Washington Capitals, defenseman Trevor Daley may have provided it. The Penguins won Game Three, 3-2, despite being outshot 49-23. Momentum accompanied the Capitals to Game Four, and Washington got an added boost when Kris Letang, the Penguins’ best defenseman, was suspended for that game. But Daley stepped up. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Toronto native played almost 29 minutes in Letang’s absence and scored the Penguins’ first goal. The host Penguins won 3-2 in overtime to take a three-games-toone series lead. “When you lose your top guy — probably your best player all year — it wasn’t just going to be the six [defensemen],” Daley said after. “We were all going to have to step up as a group, and it was a really good effort by our group tonight.” True enough, but Daley went the extra mile. “I knew what the situation was going to be like,” Daley said. “I’ve been around for a little bit now. It’s the time of year that every game and every play matters so much.” The game and series continued Daley’s career renaissance. Stuck in a limited role with Chicago, Penguins GM Jim Rutherford acquired Daley from the Blackhawks on Dec. 14 in exchange for defenseman Rob Scuderi. Daley immediately assumed major duties in Pittsburgh. He posted six goals, 16 assists and a plus-8 mark in 53 regular-season games with the Penguins. Daley’s speed and fluidity augmented a Penguins team already brimming with those qualities. When asked if he saw this coming when he was struggling with Chicago, Daley smiled and said, “I would have told you no. But it’s funny how this game works. You stick with it, and good things happen. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity. It’s a good place, and I’m enjoying what a great group of guys we have. We just play. That’s our motto.” The anchor behind the Penguins’ defense throughout the series against Washington was rookie goaltender Matt Murray. “We’re just trying to make sure he sees the shots,” Daley said. “[The Capitals] are going to get opportunities, but the kid’s been unbelievable.” Daley’s goal against Washington in Game Four was critical. The Capitals took a 1-0 lead on Jay Beagle’s severe-angle backhand continued on page 31

at 2:58 of the first period. But Daley tied the score 1-1 at the 9:16 mark of the period when his shot from the top of the right circle took a deflection off a Caps player and trickled by Washington goalie Braden Holtby. “When we were down by a goal — and there was a time [the media was] worried about our play in the first period — we find a way to get the job done,” Daley said. “That’s what this team has been all about.” After 11 playoff games for the Penguins, Daley had a goal, five assists and a plus-3 mark. He played almost 27 minutes and had a helper in the series-clinching win over Washington, a 4-3 overtime thriller in Game Six at CONSOL Energy Center on May 10. Daley, 32, was a mainstay in Dallas for 11 years before his short, unhappy stint in Chicago. Last season he made an offensive breakthrough with the Stars, racking up 16 goals and 22 assists in 68 games. He had six goals and six assists on the power play. “You went from a situation in Dallas where you were getting a lot of minutes and playing [the power play] to suddenly not getting them [in Chicago], and for me to say I didn’t lose confidence? I lost a lot of confidence,” Daley told ESPN. “When I got to Pittsburgh, I think I came into a good situation with the coaching change and everybody looking for a fresh start.”

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including ten straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for more than 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to ten straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August, 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. Whether it’s listening in on coach Mike Sullivan’s pregame speech, meeting to Carl Hagelin at the airport the night he was traded to Pittsburgh, getting a tour of Beau Bennett’s childhood home, or traveling to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, with Sidney Crosby as he trains for the upcoming season, In The Room delivers unique, unprecedented coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The show has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as the best sports series in the Mid-Atlantic region in both 2014 and 2015. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team they’ve never seen before.”

SECOND TO NONE By: Jason Seidling
Sure, it probably cost a Penguins fan or two a couple of heart palpitations along the way, but finally, in overtime of Game Six, Pittsburgh was able to put away the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Washington Capitals once and for all. Nick Bonino wore the hero’s cape, sliding a Carl Hagelin rebound along the ice into the net behind a prone Braden Holtby, giving the Penguins a 4-3 win in the game, and a 4-2 series victory. “I can’t put it into words right now, I still have chills coming off the ice,” Bonino told reporters minutes after his clincher. “Just coming off the ice and pounding everyone, it’s a lot of fun. “We had a good start to the series, and we were quiet the last couple games,” Bonino added. “We wanted to come out tonight and play hard. Phil [Kessel] plays well in big games, same with ‘Hagy.’ To be able to get some goals from us, we’re happy with that and ultimately to get that win.” In the end, it was fitting that the trio of Bonino, Hagelin and Kessel scored the game-winner. They carried the Penguins offensively all night, and all series really, continuing the run they’ve had since they were tossed on a line together back on March 13 following Evgeni Malkin’s injury. continued on page 78
77
continued from page 77
“I thought that line was noticeable all night long. Hagy brings so much speed,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “We’ve really liked how that line has come together over the last six or eight weeks of the season. It allowed us to kind of spread our talent a little bit and create more balance amongst our forward lines that we think makes us harder to play against.” In Game Six, Kessel (two goals), Hagelin and Bonino scored all four Pittsburgh goals, and they combined for seven of the team’s 12 points. They were the top-three scorers for Pittsburgh in the series against Washington. Hagelin finished first on the club with seven points (3+4), followed closely by Kessel (2+4) and Bonino (2+3). Earlier in the series, a reporter asked Sullivan at one of his media conferences to talk about his second line (Bonino’s line). Sullivan promptly flipped the question on the scribe by asking him “Which line is the second line?” That retort/question from Sullivan was more than valid. Bonino, Hagelin and Kessel have now played 26 combined regularseason and playoff contests with one another. They’ve accumulated 28 goals, 45 assists and 73 points in that span. Both Bonino and Kessel have been point-per-game performers during the stretch, and Hagelin is barely off that pace. Only Sidney Crosby (28 points) has more points than the 26 produced by Bonino and Kessel. The games are only going to get tougher in the Eastern Conference Final, when Pittsburgh faces a Vezina Trophy finalist for the second-straight series in Tampa Bay netminder Ben Bishop. But if the Penguins’ second line continues its tear, this storybook season might have several chapters left to add.

SCOUTING THE
LIGHTNING By: Ashley Vesci
Here’s a look at the key players on the Lightning roster heading into the Eastern Conference Final of the 2016 Stanley Cup® Playoffs.
BEN BISHOP | G Ben Bishop has been the Lightning’s No. 1 netminder for four seasons now, and this is his second playoff appearance in those four years. In the 2015-16 regular season, Bishop led the NHL in goals-against average (2.06), and was a selection for the 2016 NHL All-Star Game. The Colorado native has also been named a Vezina Trophy finalist, which goes to the league’s best goaltender. Last season, Bishop led his team all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. So far in this year’s playoff race, he has been solid for the Lightning. Through the first two rounds, he had a .938 save percentage and a 1.89 goals-against average.
NIKITA KUCHEROV | RW Nikita Kucherov led the Lightning in points this season with a career-high 66 (30+36) in 77 regular-season games, and he is currently ranked second on the team in playoff points. The 22-year-old Russian native had 12 points (9+3) in the first 10 postseason games this year. Kucherov’s nine goals over that span were more than double anyone else on the team. The next closest were Tyler Johnson and Victor Hedman with four goals each. continued on page 93
91
continued from page 91
VICTOR HEDMAN | D Victor Hedman leads the Lightning’s defense in points this postseason. Hedman tallied nine points (4+5) in his first 10 playoff games, which tied for third on the team. In Game Three of the Second Round versus the New York Islanders, Hedman recorded his first three-point game in a playoff series with a goal and two assists. Not only has Hedman made offensive contributions, but he has also led the entire team in ice time in the playoffs — making up for the loss of defenseman Anton Stralman, who had been out since March 25 with a broken leg.
TYLER JOHNSON | C Tyler Johnson was one of the Lightning’s most productive forwards last season. In 2014-15, he finished tied for second on the team in points with a career-high 72 (29+43), and he went on to lead the team in playoff points with 23 (13+10). Although he did not put up as impressive of numbers in the 2015-16 regular season, earning 38 points (14+24), he has again been the Lightning’s front-runner in points in the postseason. Johnson currently leads the team in playoff points with 13 (4+9) in 10 games. He tied the Bolts franchise record for points in a game with four (2+2) in Game Two of the First Round versus the Detroit Red Wings.
ALEX KILLORN | C With their captain Steven Stamkos out of the lineup with a blood clot, the Bolts’ offensive players have been forced to step up — and Alex Killorn has rose to the occasion. Killorn finished the regular season with just 40 points (14+26) in 81 games, but has been one of Tampa Bay’s most dangerous forwards in the postseason. Last season, Killorn finished the playoffs third in points with 18 (9+9), and this year, he ranked third on the team with nine points (3+6) in 10 playoff games heading into this series.

AROUND THE NHL
By: Mike Prisuta
BACK-TOBACK:
The Predators’ 4-3 overtime victory in Game Six against the Sharks sent Nashville to a Game Seven for the second consecutive series and for the second time in franchise history. The last franchise to make its first two all-time Game Seven appearances in consecutive series was Tampa Bay in 2004.
COMEBACK CATS:
The Predators’ Game Six victory over the Sharks included the second comeback from a two-goal deficit (2-0) in franchise playoff history and the first such comeback in an elimination game. Nashville’s initial rally to win from two goals down occurred against Detroit in the 2008 Western Conference quarterfinals (the Predators trailed 2-0 in the way to a 5-3 victory).
TO THE LIMIT:
Both secondround series in the Western Conference went the distance for the first time since 2013, when the Kings and Blackhawks both survived Game Sevens on the way to the Western Conference Final.
TROY TIME: The Blues’ 3-2 loss to the Stars in Game
Six of the Western Conference semifinals ensured that St. Louis forward Troy Brouwer’s team would play an NHL-record eighth consecutive Game Seven, a run that dates back to Brouwer’s days with Chicago in 2011.
SHOTS AREN’T EVERYTHING:
The Stars beat the Blues in Game Six despite being out-shot 37-14, the second time in franchise history the Stars had won a playoff game despite being outshot by at least 23 (2000 Western Conference Final vs. Colorado, 39-15 in a 4-1 win).
MORE OT, PLEASE:
The first 22 games of the second round (IslandersLightning five, CaptialsPenguins five, Sharks-Predators six and Blues-Stars six) included eight overtime games, which tied for the most in the second round since the 16-team playoff format was adopted in 1980. There had also been eight second-round overtimes in 1996 (24 games) and again in 2001 (25 games). All four second-round series this postseason included at least two overtime games for the first time since 1980.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and is funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:7.5”
HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

NICK BONINO
2015.16 REGULAR
SEASON RECAP By: Ashley Vesci and CJ Harvey
Here’s a look back at your 2015-16 Pittsburgh Penguins:
BIG ADDITIONS Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford was busy this past summer. His biggest move came when he acquired superstar winger Phil Kessel from Toronto (along with forward Tyler Biggs and defenseman Tim Erixon) in exchange for forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Nick PHIL KESSEL Spaling, defenseman Scott Harrington and a 2016 thirdround draft pick. Rutherford also made a couple of key transactions late in July, starting when he acquired forward Nick Bonino and defenseman Adam Clendening (later traded to Anaheim) and a 2016 secondround draft pick in exchange for forward Brandon Sutter and a 2016 third-round pick. Rutherford then agreed to terms with forward Eric Fehr on a three-year contract. Those moves — paired with the departures of other players including Paul Martin, Christian Ehrhoff, Blake Comeau, Steve Downie and Daniel Winnik — means the Penguins looked very different heading into this year.
SUPER DUPER One player they lost during the course of the season was a very special one. On Dec. 8, the Pittsburgh hockey community was sad to learn that Pascal Dupuis had announced that he is no longer able to play hockey due to health issues. continued on page 126
PASCAL DUPUIS

continued from page 125
On Dec. 23, 2013, Dupuis tore his ACL and MCL in a game against the Ottawa Senators, and he was forced to miss the remainder of the season. It was discovered during rehab that Dupuis developed a blood clot in his knee, and he was put on blood thinners. Dupuis worked extremely hard to be able to return to the lineup the following season, but after just 16 games it was discovered that the blood clot had traveled to his lung. He was forced to continue taking blood thinners and was unable to participate in the rest of the season. He attempted one last comeback to start the 2015-16 season, but after being forced to leave the ice on Nov. 6 and Dec. 1 for health reasons, he made the decision to step away from the game. Dupuis made his NHL debut in 2000 with the Minnesota Wild, and he went on to play in 871 NHL games — earning a total of 409 points (190G-219A). Dupuis was traded to Pittsburgh in 2007 as part of the Marian Hossa deal, and went on to play nine seasons with the Penguins — winning the Stanley Cup with them in 2009. He was awarded the first-ever Dapper Dan Courage Award on Feb. 17. This award is given to a Pittsburgh-area athlete who demonstrates a willingness to always preserve and serves as an inspiration to his teammates.
COACHING CHANGE Despite their stacked roster, Pittsburgh underachieved through the opening months of the season. While they had a 15-10-3 record, their offense and compete level was lacking. MIKE A team loaded with offensive talent SULLIVAN ranked 27th in the league in offense, while the power play was tied for 26th. That’s when Rutherford decided to make a coaching change. On Dec. 12, Mike Sullivan — who was in his first season as head coach of Pittsburgh’s American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/ continued on page 129

Scranton, leading his team to an 18-5 record and first place in the Atlantic Division — replaced Mike Johnston as head coach of the Penguins. Sullivan’s job was clear: make the Penguins fulfill their potential. To do that, he wanted them to play a certain way and mold an identity built on certain characteristics: speed; compete; resilience. Sullivan knew that it would take time to build that identity. He preached to his players not to focus on the result, but focus on the process. It took some time, but the Penguins finally began to fulfill that identity. After losing their first four games under Sullivan, the team began to turn it around. They bought into Sullivan’s approach and got rewarded. They began scoring in bunches, playing strong defensively and displaying an incredible resiliency in games — particularly when they got down. They got hot going into the All-Star break, continued to gain momentum following it and peaked during the month of March — where they put together a six-game win streak. Most importantly, the Penguins climbed from outside of the playoff picture into a postseason berth.
MVP AND NORRIS Sidney Crosby had just five points in October and ranked tied for 148th in the NHL scoring race at the end of that month. However, he resorted back to his usual dominant self under Sullivan. The captain keyed Pittsburgh’s second-half turnaround and was named team MVP as a result. Crosby was the NHL’s leading scorer since Dec. 12 with 66 points (30G-36A). Overall, Crosby finished third in league scoring with 85 points (36G-49A), including a league-best 21 points in March when he was continued on page 131

named the NHL’s ‘First Star’ of the month. Crosby had points in 15 of 16 games in March, helping the Penguins go 12-4 during their busiest stretch of the campaign. At the other end of the rink, Kris Letang also had a slow start with just one goal in his first 24 games. But by the end of April, he had career highs in goals (16), assists (51) and points (67) and made a serious case for the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman. What’s even more impressive is that his engine doesn’t seem to stop as he averaged the fourthhighest ice time in the NHL (26:56 minutes per game). He hit the 30-minute mark five times in his last 13 regular-season games.

SCOTT WILSON
YOUNG GUNS Other crucial contributors to Pittsburgh’s second-half turnaround were Bryan Rust, Tom Kuhnhackl and Scott Wilson. The three Penguins draft picks were sparks for the bottom-two forward lines, bringing speed, energy and a blue-collar approach while chipping in offensively as well. As a result, they all earned two-year, one-way contract extensions. In total, 12 players who began the season with Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League either made the permanent jump to Pittsburgh — including more youngsters in Conor Sheary, Derrick Pouliot and Oskar Sundqvist — or provided a positive cameo appearance. continued on page 132
131
continued from page 131
MIDSEASON ACQUISITIONS Rutherford made a few key midseason trades, starting when the Penguins traded Rob Scuderi to Chicago for Trevor Daley on Dec. 14. Daley immediately began thriving on Pittsburgh’s blue line, bringing mobility and puck-moving ability. His best game of the year was on March 20, when he scored and dished out two assists in a 6-2 win over Washington. But the Penguins really started sprinting after they acquired speedster Carl Hagelin from Anaheim for David Perron and Adam Clendening on Jan. 14. Hagelin was immediately exceptional. He earned an assist in four of his first five games with the team, but really hit his stride down the stretch when he recorded 19 points in his last 20 games. Of the 10 total goals he scored with the Penguins, six were game-winners. Justin Schultz was the Penguins’ final acquisition. Edmonton traded him to Pittsburgh for a third-round draft pick on Feb. 27, and the defenseman fit right in with the Penguins’ style of play. He finished the season with eight points (1G-7A) and a plus-7 in 18 games with Pittsburgh after recording 10 points (3G-7A) and a minus-22 in 45 games with Edmonton.

EFFORT By: Mike Prisuta
The Penguins’ advance to the Eastern Conference Final has been many things individually and collectively but most of all it has been a team effort. Head coach Mike Sullivan wouldn’t have had it any other way. “We believe in the team as a whole as being the most important part,” Sullivan maintained during the Penguins’ second-round matchup with the Washington Capitals. “And I think that’s the greatest thing about our game, when you become part of something that’s bigger than yourself. It really is a terrific experience. My sense is that’s what this group is feeling right now. “We’ve enjoyed some success here down the stretch in the regular season and now into the playoffs. It has been in the true sense of the word a team, collective effort at all the positions. And so I think there’s a feeling and a sense in the room that all of us are part of something that’s bigger than the individual, and that’s the greatest thing about team sports.” Perhaps nowhere has the Penguins’ all-for-one commitment been more obvious than in the goal crease. Upon returning to active duty following an extended absence due to injury, Stanley Cup-winner Marc-Andre Fleury dutifully and enthusiastically initially served as rookie Matt Murray’s backup. “I just think these guys are great pros and they’re good people,” Sullivan said. “They have good relationships, they root for one another.” continued on page 143

It’s that way all across the locker room. Whether it’s defenseman Justin Schultz playing in Game One against the Rangers and then not again until Game Four against the Capitals or winger Patric Hornqvist having his ice time severely curtailed in the third period of a potential series-clinching game at Washington, no one complains. Whether it’s been Fleury or center Evgeni Malkin knocked from the lineup for weeks at a time or defenseman Kris Letang suspended for a critical postseason game in the second round, the Penguins have found a way to survive, adapt and overcome whatever adversity they’ve encountered. And they’ve emerged stronger for having endured such experiences. The players have done what’s been asked when required, nothing less and nothing more. Individual egos and personal agendas have been checked at the door. “Everybody here feels that there’s something special going on,” veteran center Matt Cullen confirmed. “The way that we finished the season and the way that we’ve gone through the playoffs here, this group has a strong belief in what we’re doing and a trust among each other. “I think there is a strong confidence, a strong belief that this is something special.” The Penguins had to contend with a great deal this season along the way to reaching their first Eastern Conference Final since 2013. continued on page 144

The change behind the bench in December, the in-season transformation of the roster and what seemed to be a never-ending succession of minor-league call-ups all contributed to the bond the Penguins now share and now enjoy. “There are a lot of pieces falling into place together,” said Cullen, a veteran of 18 NHL seasons. “Every situation is unique. We had a lot of injuries to deal with and the young guys came up and played outstanding for us. Just a lot of different adversity that we went through this year seemed to bring us closer together and has made us a strong, resilient group.” Perhaps no one appreciates what has taken place as much as Cullen. “It’s not easy to find,” he continued. “The longer you play, the more you see that it’s a unique thing and you treasure it and you try to make the most of it because it doesn’t come around very often.” Cullen, 39, played in Anaheim, Florida, Carolina, New York (Rangers), Ottawa, Minnesota and Nashville prior to joining the Penguins this season, and won a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2005-06. But to Cullen this has been anything but just another campaign. “I’ve enjoyed it more than any year I can remember,” he insisted. “It’s been awesome. We’ve all had a lot of fun and are enjoying it. “We just want to keep it going here because we do all feel like we have something special here.”

SERIES STORYLINES PENGUINS VS. LIGHTNING By: Michelle Crechiolo
The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Tampa Bay Lightning will meet in the Eastern Conference Final. The Penguins advanced after defeating the Washington Capitals in six games, while the Bolts moved on after eliminating the New York Islanders in five games. Here’s a look at the biggest storylines…
SETTING THE SCENE Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay have met just once before in the postseason, when they played each other during the Eastern Conference quarterfinals back in 2011. That year, the Lightning recovered from a 3-1 series deficit to win in seven games. Only four players on the Penguins’ current roster participated in that first-round matchup — Kris Letang, Ben Lovejoy, Chris Kunitz and Marc-Andre Fleury — as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin both missed the entire series due to injury. Crosby was out for the entire second half of the season after being diagnosed with a concussion; while Malkin suffered a torn ACL and MCL in a game against Buffalo on March 29. While the Penguins were without their franchise centers that year, the Bolts could be without theirs this year. Lighting captain Steven Stamkos had surgery on April 4 to treat a blood clot in his right arm and was given an expected recovery time of 1-3 months. Before going down, the superstar sniper had 36 goals and 64 points in 77 regular-season games. Tampa Bay has also been missing defenseman Anton Stralman, who suffered a broken leg in a game against the Islanders on March 25 after being tremendous all year for the Bolts and becoming a Penguins killer — scoring four of his eight total goals against Pittsburgh during the regular season. continued on page 155

However, despite missing two key players, the Bolts found a way to advance to the Eastern Conference Final — and if they get either or both of those guys back at some point this series, an already-dangerous team will be even more deadly.
DEPTH TESTED Both Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay have built reputations as being high-scoring teams, and they’ve certainly lived up to those reputations — especially in the second half of the season and into the playoffs. Entering the third round, the Penguins’ offense was ranked first while the Bolts were ranked third. However, neither team necessarily relied on their superstars in the second round and both were able showcase their offensive depth. Lightning head coach Jon Cooper reunited his ‘Triplets’ line of Ondej Palat, Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov against the Islanders and that trio led the attack in Stamko’s absence. Their second line of Alex Killorn, Valtteri Filppula and Jonathan Drouin was also strong; they got big goals from Brian Boyle in the bottomsix and defenseman Victor Hedman finished with four tallies. After ranking first and second in team scoring during the First Round with a combined 15 points, Crosby and Malkin were limited to just four combined points in the Second Round. That meant other guys had to step up, and they did. The trio of Carl Hagelin, Nick Bonino and Phil Kessel was dominant in the series, and names like Matt Cullen, Trevor Daley, Eric Fehr, Patric Hornqvist, Tom Kuhnhackl and Ben Lovejoy all joined them in the goal column. As head coach Mike Sullivan has repeatedly said, the team isn’t about any one or two players — it’s about the group. That mindset will continue to be important considering that Crosby and Malkin will likely be seeing a lot of Hedman, who is continued on page 157

having his second-straight monstrous postseason. He was matched up against Islanders captain John Tavares in the last round and held him scoreless in the final four games of the series. Hedman was perhaps even more dominant at the other end of the ice, racking up four goals and eight points. Whoever gets tasked with going up against the 6-foot-6 Swede is going to have their work cut out for them. The same goes for whichever Bolts players share the ice with Kris Letang.
ANOTHER VEZINA FINALIST
Penguins rookie goaltender Matt Murray took down future Hall-of-Famer Henrik Lundqvist in Round One and followed that up by slightly edging out probable Vezina Trophy winner Braden Holtby in the second round. His reward? A matchup against another 2015-16 Vezina Trophy finalist in Ben Bishop, who has led his team to back-to-back Eastern Conference Finals. Much like the Penguins, the Lightning got off to a slow start offensively. Despite their talented forward group, Tampa Bay’s biggest problem through the first couple months of the season was scoring. As a result, they relied heavily upon their hulking 6-foot-7 netminder, who ended up backstopping the regular season’s fifthranked defense — one slot above the Penguins. The 29-year-old St. Louis native carried that strong play into the postseason, as Bishop posted a .938 save percentage and 1.89 goals-against average through the first two rounds. He made 28 saves in their 4-0 blanking of the Islanders in Game Five, giving him four shutouts in Tampa Bay’s last five series-clinching wins dating back to last year’s playoffs.
