SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT
BETH BLANKENSHIP
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Season Ticket Location: 217, H, 11-12 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 1989
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? My brother attended the games regularly in the 80’s when he was in college at Duquesne University. After he graduated and got a job, he bought a season ticket package with a college buddy. When the friend couldn’t make it to a game, he’d invite me to go. After my first game, I was hooked. When his friend got married, he could no longer stay on the plan with my brother so I jumped at the opportunity and began sharing the season ticket package with him. We’ve been sharing our season tickets ever since!! DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME RITUALS WHEN ATTENDING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? Not really a ritual, but I enjoy it when my brother and I go because we get to eat dinner together at my house. It is nice to get some family time with him because it doesn’t happen often. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ALL-TIME PITTSBURGH PENGUINS PLAYER? Tough one…Ron Francis and Evgeni Malkin continued on page 6

continued from page 5
AS A SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHERISHED PENGUINS MEMORY? Watching them raise the Cup three times! I can remember where I was for each and every one of them and who I was celebrating with at the moment. I can’t wait for the day I get to see it happen in person. The parades/ parties afterward here in town were fun, too! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO WEAR OR BRING TO A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? My Geno jersey, my favorite Penguins earrings and my gold necklace that I’ve had for over 20 years that has two different Penguins charms. DO YOU OWN PITTSBURGH PENGUINS MEMORABILIA OR CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS COLLECTOR? I have so many things I’ve collected over the years, I can’t even begin to list them. I have cereal boxes dating back to the early 90’s, glassware, plastic tumblers and rally towels. One thing I have and love is a picture of me with the Stanley Cup from 2009. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? I like watching the pre-game video montages that are presented. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE STORIES OR FAVORITE EXPERIENCES SINCE BECOMING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? I remember walking through the Civic Arena Beth at the Snapshots with with my sister and walking Stanley event in 2009. in front of us was Mario and Nathalie Lemieux and their little girl, who was no more than two. She was walking between her parents, holding their hands, and it was just such a sweet sight to see, both of them being so tall and them having to bend down to hold her hand and walk slowly beside her because she didn’t want to be carried. Very cute!!!

GAME
NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES [VS] PREDATORS
The Penguins and Nashville Predators meet here this afternoon for the second time this season. The previous game was played in Nashville on Oct. 25, when Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 saves in a 3-0 victory that saw Sidney Crosby score one goal and set up the other two. Fleury and former Predator Patric Hornqvist also had assists in that game. . . Crosby has thus figured in on each of the last six Pittsburgh goals against Nashville, as he also had three assists in a 3-1 victory in Nashville last March 4. Crosby has four goals and 17 points in nine career games against the Predators, recording two or more points in six of those nine games. His average of 1.88 points per game against Nashville was his highest vs. any team coming out of the NHL All-Star break. The only time Crosby was held off the scoresheet by Nashville was here on March 22, 2012. . . Pittsburgh has won five straight games over Nashville, its longest such streak against the Predators, whose last win over the Penguins came here on Feb. 14, 2010 (4-3 in a shootout). During this five-game win streak, the Penguins have outscored Nashville, 19-6. . . Pittsburgh has scored at least three goals in 10 straight games against the Predators, six times scoring four or more. . . Nashville has missed on 12 straight power plays continued on page 10

against Pittsburgh since Cody Franson beat Fleury in Nashville on Oct. 21, 2010. . . Pittsburgh is 4-1-1 with two ties in eight all-time home games against the Predators, the only regulation loss coming March 4, 2004 (4-9), when Dan Hamhuis had a goal and four assists and the Predators scored six power-play goals — still a record for most power-play goals allowed by the Penguins in a home game . . . Pittsburgh has scored the first goal in seven of its last 11 games against Nashville. . . Former Penguin James Neal had two shots in the game against Pittsburgh earlier this season. . . Neither team has ever recorded a hat trick against the other. . . This is the fourth afternoon game between the teams; the Penguins are 0-1-1 with one tie in the previous three. . . The Penguins have never scored a short-handed goal against Nashville.
THE PENGUINS
After tonight, the Penguins will embark on their first trip West this season, playing in Edmonton on Wednesday, Calgary on Friday and Vancouver on Saturday. Pittsburgh plays five of its next six games on the road. . . Pittsburgh has lost 10 of its last 14 games (4-6-4) before playing three games in four nights after the NHL All-Star Game. The Penguins played here continued on page 13

against Winnipeg on Jan. 27, in Washington the next night and on Long Island on Jan. 30. . . With Crosby and Evgeni Malkin missing the All-Star Game due to injuries, Fleury was the Penguins’ lone representative. Playing his second career All-Star Game, Fleury faced 16 shots for Team Foligno in its 17-12 loss to Team Toews in Columbus on Jan. 25. . . The only other goaltender to represent Pittsburgh in the All-Star Game was Michel Dion in 1982. . . Zach Sill scored his first NHL goal Jan. 21 in a 3-2 shootout loss to Chicago at home. He thus became the fourth Penguin to get his first NHL goal this season, joining Derrick Pouliot, Bryan Rust and Brian Dumoulin. . . The Penguins’ next home game is Feb. 11 against Detroit. . . Crosby and Malkin began the post-All-Star Game schedule just five points behind scoring leader Jakub Voracek of Philadelphia. . . The shootout loss to Chicago on Jan. 21 was the fourth straight suffered by Pittsburgh, its longest such streak since dropping seven straight from Nov. 14, 2005 through Dec. 7, 2006. . . Pittsburgh is 3-5-1 in its last nine afternoon games and has allowed the first goal in six of those. The Penguins are 2-3-1 in their last six home afternoon games but 15-5-1 in their last 21. . . Chris Kunitz had his fifth career short-handed goal in a 3-2 overtime loss in Philadelphia on Jan. 20. It was his third with Pittsburgh and first in four seasons. . . Pittsburgh was 5-4-4 in its first 13 games without Hornqvist, who had been out since being hurt Dec. 27 against Washington.

ONE POINT AT A TIME By: Mike Prisuta
The Penguins hit the All-Star break having dropped four straight games, but at the same time encouraged about what they had done in the final two games of that streak and optimistic about what similar performances might mean in the second half of the season. For the Penguins, back-to-back losses to the Flyers on Jan. 20 in Philadelphia (3-2 in overtime) and to the Blackhawks on Jan. 21 at CONSOL Energy Center (3-2 in a shootout) weren’t necessarily rewarding, but may yet prove revealing. “My message was we needed a game like that to show that this is how we need to play on a nightly basis,” head coach Mike Johnston said of his address to the Penguins just before the players scattered for their All-Star hiatus. “Heading into a break you want to feel like your game is moving in the right direction. “If we repeat that type of game we’re fine, we’re going to be a good hockey team in this league.” The idea is still to win, and there will be no escaping that absolute in the stretch run of the regular season and especially in the postseason. But another objective heading into the final games just before the break was to establish some habits and some intangibles that the Penguins understand will serve them well when the games really matter. Specifically, Johnston was looking for a “response” from his team after losses to the Islanders on Jan. 16 in New York and to continued on page 24

the Rangers on Jan. 18 at home, efforts that had disappointed in terms of how competitive, combative and resilient the Penguins had been. “We need to play with more intensity, more emotion, for sure,” Johnston had observed. He saw much of what he had wanted to see against Chicago, one night after a performance in Philadelphia that likewise hadn’t been displeasing. The back-to-back games just before the break constituted progress, one point at a time. Against the Flyers, the Penguins had been able to function amid chaos. They had battled through adversity that included losing defenseman Kris Letang late in the first period in what became the type of physical battle Flyers-Penguins confrontations can often become. The Penguins’ effort that night might have been personified by center Evgeni Malkin, who was forced out due to injury but made it back onto the ice. “I really thought he showed a lot of battle coming back,” Johnston said. As for the rest of the Penguins, “I thought everyone in here battled pretty hard,” defenseman Rob Scuderi said. The Chicago game presented a much different challenge. This was a fast-paced, highly-skilled test of the Penguins’ ability to take a punch or two on the scoreboard, as opposed to those they had absorbed and thrown the previous night against the Flyers. This time, the Penguins faced an early 2-0 deficit with a We need to patience that suggested they’re developing a belief in their play with more systems, their skills and their intensity, more collective potential. They continued to play their emotion, for sure. game and eventually got back in Mike Johnston the game. The time between the resumption of play following the All-Star break and the opening of the postseason will be spent, among other endeavors, reinforcing such notions so that by the time the playoffs arrive they’ll be second nature. continued on page 26

“I think we’re a work in progress,” Scuderi observed. “I don’t think anything more than that. I know it’s the stretch run coming up but that’s still a lot of games. For us, there are a few things we have to continue to build on to become a better team when mid-April, hopefully, is in the cards for us. “I would say we’re a more patient team this year. I just feel like there were times last year where we’d be a little antsy and not stick with our game plan. This year, [the Chicago game] is a perfect example. We kept playing the same game. Down 2-0, it doesn’t matter. Keep playing the same game and eventually we get back into it.” Added winger Beau Bennett: “We showed a lot of heart coming back.” The Penguins also showed the type of smarts in terms of recognition of the challenge at hand against the Flyers and the Blackhawks, and an ability to deal with both. “It’s gotta be about us and the way we need to play,” captain Sidney Crosby said. Point taken. Twice.

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

Of all the coatings, paints and stains we’ve made in our 130-year history, two colors stand out among the rest: Black and Gold. Our Pittsburgh roots run deep, and so does our commitment to giving back to the place we call home. And because we bring innovative coatings and glass products to CONSOL Energy Center, we’re proud to be a part of every game. To see what other winning color formulas we’re bringing to the surface, visit ppg.com.

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

CONSOL Energy Center IN FIFTH YEAR TO PRESENT
HMK
MORE TOP TOURS, EVENTS By: Pam Thompson
PERM
CONSOL Energy Center — now in its fifth year of hosting entertainment for every sort of audience — will present more top tours and banner sporting events in the future. The New Year will bring the Maroon 5 World Tour 2015 and the Second and Third Rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship to CONSOL Energy Center. The Pittsburgh arena’s reputation for hosting major sporting events will continue. The Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Championship will be contested in CONSOL Energy Center in 2017, the A-10 announced in September. Bernadette V. McGlade, A-10 Commissioner, says, “The opportunity to rotate our championship within the A-10 footprint is exciting. She adds that CONSOL Energy Center is a state-of-the-art venue with great fan amenities and a successful history of hosting NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship events. Commenting on the significance of having a facility like CONSOL Energy Center in the community, Craig Davis, President and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH, says: “Pittsburgh is at the top of its game when it comes to sports, and CONSOL has been the linchpin for our success in attracting national events such as USA Gymnastics P&G Championships, NCAA Men’s Frozen Four and NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Combined with Penguins games and the fact that it is a top-performing concert venue in terms of sales, this building and AEG have been invaluable in terms of providing visibility and economic impact to the Pittsburgh region. “ Davis adds, “Sports events are an ever-growing opportunity within the tourism industry. The market segment is 25 percent of our convention sales team’s bookings. Having CONSOL Energy Center is key to the arsenal of facilities we can offer when bidding on large sporting events in our region.” continued on page 76

Home of the to the types of Pittsburgh Penguins and entertainment the Pittsburgh Power, and concerts at CONSOL Energy CONSOL Energy Center Center. has annually hosted the Three Rivers Classic of men’s collegiate hockey, the second annual CCM/ USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in 2013, and the NHL Draft in 2012. In addition to sporting events, well over 300 performances took place at CONSOL Energy Center in its first four Paul McCartney years of operation. Leading the eclectic parade of entertainers performing for CONSOL Energy Center audiences, Paul McCartney, the inaugural act on August 18, 2010, sold out his first show so quickly that a second performance was added for the next night. After winning five Grammy Awards earlier this year, McCartney came back to CONSOL Energy Center in July with his universally acclaimed “Out There” tour and played for another sold-out crowd. In his most recent appearance, McCartney sang and played his way through his ambitious set list and two encores, performing some 40 songs with dedications to his wife, Nancy, his late wife, Linda, the civil rights demonstrators of the ‘60s, his dad and Ringo Starr for their birthdays that coincided with the concert, as well as John Lennon and George Harrison. There is no limit to the types of entertainment and concerts appearing on CONSOL Energy Center stages. Concerts — rock, pop, doo wop, Christian, country and more — have included One Direction, Lady Gaga, Donnie and Marie Osmond, Foo Fighters, Casting Crowns, Katy Perry, Barry Manilow, Black Keys, Carrie Underwood, Drake, the “Justins” — Bieber and Timberlake, Arcade Fire, Wiz Khalifa, Bruno Mars, Usher, Miley Cyrus, Michael Bublé, Andre Rieu, Hillsong United, Josh Groban, TobyMac, New Kids on the Block, Chris Tomlin and Celtic Woman. 6th annual readers’ survey named CONSOL Energy Center the best NHL arena. • It won the National “Hall of Headlines” award from Venues Today magazine. • Its Box Office was nominated for “Box Office of the Year” by the International Ticketing Association. • The Master Builders’ Association (MBA) top prize for Best New Construction in the category over $10 Million was awarded to PJ Dick Incorporated for its role as construction manager on CONSOL Energy Center. • On the environmental front, CONSOL Energy Center was a nominee for the Sustainability Award at the International Business Awards in Barcelona, Spain in 2011. • The building won the Green Power: Turn It On! Award from PennFuture. • CONSOL Energy Center was honored as the most innovative energy efficient glass project in Glass Magazine’s Crystal Achievement Awards. CONSOL Energy Center claims the most comfortable seating arrangement in the NHL — seats up to 24 inches wide, with an accompanying increase in legroom. The center also provides ADA accessibility, family restrooms and guest services locations on all seating levels, as well as 12 escalators — that’s 10 more than at the Civic Arena. In addition to entertainment and sporting events, the arena’s main floor, suites, dining facilities and common areas are used for fundraisers and countless private functions. This year, CONSOL Energy Center hosted the Hillman Cancer Center Gala for the fourth time. It is the venue for the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s annual signature fundraisers -- Skates & Plates and the Wine Tasting Gala. The venue also has hosted the Pens Foundation’s scholarship winners and students attending its Explorer Series, CONSOL Energy’s Community All-Stars recognition programs, and Check Your Heart screenings. All of these activities contribute to making CONSOL Energy Center a busy Elton John place all year round.

Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”
said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. For more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

HOCKEY IS FOR
EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

DRAFT CLASS
KASPERI KAPANEN
Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.
SAM LAFFERTY
Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

ANTHONY ANGELLO
Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.
JADEN LINDO
Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.
JEFF TAYLOR
Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. Taylor led all Union rookie blueliners in scoring with 16 points. Beyond the Numbers: Last season Jeff was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team as an 18-year-old true freshman.

PROJECT
POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settler’s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS PROFILE
ROB
SCUDERI By: Mark Madden
After four years in Los Angeles, defenseman Rob Scuderi returned home to the team that drafted him, developed him and gave him his first NHL opportunity. To the team that won the Stanley Cup in 2009 with him as a key cog. It’s still a good fit. “I have some familiarity with the area, and it’s a good place to have my family,” said Scuderi, 36. “It made the decision pretty easy.” But Scuderi’s first season back with the Penguins was anything but easy. He suffered a broken ankle at Toronto on Oct. 26, 2013. Scuderi returned two months later, but had trouble finding his form. “It was just kind of a messy season for me,” Scuderi said. “I wanted to put it past me and get a fresh start. I feel like I’ve been more myself this season.” Indeed, Scuderi is back on track during the current campaign. He had five assists and was plus-8 after 46 games while playing his trademark no-frills defense. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder is also helping guide the fortunes of the many young defensemen who have seen time with the Penguins this season. “They’re asking me to be more of a mentor for some of the younger guys,” Scuderi said. “Every time a guy’s been called up, continued on page 162

I’ve pretty much [partnered] with him. And I’ve played with Simon [Despres], who’s been doing a great job. “I’m still on the PK. I may not be playing against the first line anymore, but I’m still trying to play good defense and giving my team a chance to win.” Scuderi is an integral part of the Penguins’ penalty-kill unit. The Penguins’ PK ranked third in the NHL at the All-Star break, succeeding 87.1 percent of the time. Scuderi made his Penguins debut in 2004. In Pittsburgh, Scuderi has played for coaches Eddie Olczyk, Michel Therrien and Dan Bylsma. Scuderi’s adjustment to playing for new coach Mike Johnston has been seamless. “When a new coach comes in, everyone thinks he has to do something different to impress the new coaches,” Scuderi said. “But although they’ve changed the structure of the way we want to play, they’re OK with guys individually. “I’m a defensive defenseman. There’s no secret about that. Maybe at first you think, ‘Does this coach expect me to jump in the play every time? Does this coach expect me to lead the rush?’ But that was never the case. “All [Johnston] expects me to do is support the play. Not to carry through the neutral zone. Not to force offense. He just wants you to be an option, and move up the ice as a unit of five.”

Scuderi won a Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2009. He went to Los Angeles as a free agent, playing four seasons with the Kings and winning another Cup in 2012. He returned to the Penguins as a free agent in 2013, signing a four-year contract. “When I came back, there was a lot of change,” said Scuderi, a Long Island native. “The roster turns over, but that’s just professional sports. “But after four years of being gone and four years of Dan [Bylsma] doing it 100 percent his way, there was a change. There was going to be an adjustment regardless of where I made my decision to play.” Scuderi’s broken ankle was the biggest difficulty he faced last season. Scuderi is durable. In the three seasons prior, he didn’t miss a single game due to injury. “The physical side of it was OK in a couple months,” Scuderi said. “For me, being fortunate in my career to have not missed a lot of time, I really struggled with that amount of time off, and trying to come back into it. I just couldn’t get over the hump. Being honest with myself, I struggled. “I thought I started to play well after the Olympic break. But with the way the defense was last year, with Kris [Letang] out after having a stroke and some of the other injuries, I felt like I couldn’t get into a groove with a partner.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

RICHARDS HITS
1,000 By: Haley Sawyer
Teddy Richards and his younger brother Josh Richards
Sitting in his office chair, you’d think Teddy Richards was a high school football coach. He’s still got the stature of an offensive lineman left over from some high school glory days and college playing time. This man, however, no longer has a football life. He’s the Penguins assistant equipment manager. And he worked his 1000th professional hockey game on Jan. 21 when the Penguins hosted the Chicago Blackhawks. “I really liked the locker room atmosphere and hockey locker rooms are identical [to football],” Richards said. “You’ve got the camaraderie, friendships, so something I just enjoy being around. “In hockey you have one locker room, its team, everyone is united. In football, the experience I had, it was separated. There were guys on the team I didn’t even know.” Richards’ journey to the NHL equipment room was long and at times, tumultuous. It began back when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins invaded eastern Pennsylvania in 1999. “When the team came to Wilkes-Barre, it was the biggest thing,” Richards said. “The rock stars were in town. You couldn’t go to a bar without the Penguins being there.” The new team brought with it new jobs, including parking attendant, a part-time job that a teenage Richards snatched up. His father, Ted, was the first-ever bus driver for the team, which helped him to gather more responsibilities. After games, the younger Richards folded towels for the team on a volunteer basis. After he put in work in the laundry room,

he began part-time employment in the pro shop owned by the head equipment manager. It was there that he learned the staples of the job he has today. Richards left after high school to attend Mansfield University on a football scholarship. Due to a recurring injury and general unhappiness, he left school. He took an equipment manager position in Wilkes-Barre. “Sitting here now it worked out for me, but it’s hard to recommend anyone that’s the path,” Richards said. “But along the way, there’s a lot of long nights and a lot of very small paychecks. It’s bittersweet to be where I am right now.” Richards made a new life for himself as an equipment manager and worked his way up to head equipment manager. Then another member of the Richards family jumped aboard the Penguins program. Richards’ younger brother, Josh, joined the ranks. “There’s good and there’s bad. But more better than bad,” Josh said. “There are times when you’re going to butt heads obviously. We’re going to yell, but we’re brothers. That’s what happens with siblings. “It also worked for the better too, because I could always say, ‘I don’t agree with this.’ We talked about stuff.” Two summers ago, after five years of working side by side, the two-headed monster of equipment managing split. The elder was headed to Pittsburgh while the younger to Texas to work with the Dallas Stars. Twelve-thousand miles and busy schedules don’t get in the way of their relationship. “There hasn’t been a day that’s gone by that we haven’t talked to each other on the phone,” Josh said. “I don’t talk to him for a day, something’s got to be wrong. I start to get worried.” They even get to see each other in person every once and a while. Whenever the Penguins face off against the Stars, the duo makes sure to get together. They even manage to keep up continued on page 177

their “dry run Thanksgiving” tradition. Years ago, Richards’s wife bought a turkey and cooked it as a trial run for the real Thanksgiving Day. A turkey feeds quite a few people, so he decided to invite their Baby Penguins co-workers for a “dry run Thanksgiving.” “His wife was all for it and it worked out last year when we came up,” Josh said. “I asked our staff if anyone wanted to come for it and they were all jacked up for it so our whole training staff came over to his house.” Even though Richards went from head equipment manager in the AHL to assistant equipment manager in the NHL, he is glad to have made the jump to the big show. There are the obvious perks of upgraded travel and lodging as well as nicer facilities and bigger crowds. Any NHL position may seem like a higher profile job than a head equipment manager in the AHL, but Richards sees it as less stressful. “I don’t have all he stress of the head equipment manager. Everything doesn’t fall on my shoulders, I kind of had somebody to run to if I had an issue or question. It doesn’t all fall on my shoulders where in Wilkes-Barre it did.” Richards is as dependable as they come. In his entire career as an equipment manager, he’s only missed three games: One for a death in the family and two more for the birth of his first child. Not even a broken ankle kept him out of the job he loves. Teddy Richards stood in front of two massive industrialized sewing machines in one of the many equipment rooms in CONSOL Energy Center. He was beaming like a toddler showing off a brand new toy. “My favorite part,” he said, eyes aglow. “Is making something out of nothing.” Whether it’s sewing a protective attachment on a player’s uniform or working his way up to becoming an integral part of an NHL team, Richards has done just that.

FLEURY PARTICIPATES IN SECOND CAREER ALL-STAR WEEKEND By: Michelle Crechiolo
The play of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury — namely his incredible first half backstopping a Penguins team beleaguered by injuries and a mumps outbreak — earned him a nomination to his second career All-Star weekend Jan. 25-27 in Columbus. “It’s always an honor when you can be here playing with these guys,” the 30-year-old netminder said. “It doesn’t happen too often during your career, so I’m really happy to be here.” Here’s how his weekend went.
FANTASY DRAFT Team Foligno picked Fleury in the ninth round of the All-Star Fantasy Draft. The part Fleury said he was most looking forward to about being part of the hometown team was not hearing that annoying cannon go off while he was in net. “Hopefully the cannon won’t go when I get scored on, right? That’s a good thing,” he joked.
SKILLS COMPETITION Fleury’s had a lot of practice over the years trying to score into empty nets. That work paid off during the All-Star Skills Competition, when he nailed his portion of the Skills Challenge Relay: Goalie Goals. From his own crease, Fleury had to keep shooting a puck over a barrier at the blue line into the net at the other end of the ice until he got two of them in. It took him just five attempts.

“Happy they went in, so I know the puck fits in there,” Fleury joked afterward. “It’s on camera, right? I score goals in practice sometimes, but not a lot of people see those.” Fleury was also in net for Round Two of the shootout, where he stopped eight of 10 players from Team Toews.

After allowing seven goals in his period of play (the second) in the All-Star Game — which ended up setting a new record for combined goals in a game with 29 in Team Toews’ 17-12 win over Team Foligno — Fleury was asked if he bet on the over. “Maybe I did,” Fleury responded with a devilish grin. “Who knows?” Fleury joked heading into the weekend that the All-Star weekend wasn’t for the goalies, and he was right as they all got shelled — the Penguins goaltender especially. “It was a slow period. It felt like forever,” Fleury joked. “I think after 10 minutes, it was six goals in already. I was like, that’s a tough one [laughs]. “Other than getting booed and cheered for nothing, it was a good weekend. I had some fun hanging out with the guys. To be on the ice with them was fun.”

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta
NEVER CAUGHT SHORT: The Bruins hit the All-Star break as the only team in the NHL not to have surrendered a shorthanded goal. The Avalanche, Kings, Islanders, Hurricanes, Capitals and Canucks had all been burned on just one such occasion.
EARNING IT: Colorado G Semyon Varlamov set an NHL record for saves in a road shutout by stopping 54 pucks in a 2-0 victory on Jan. 6 at Chicago. Varlamov came within five saves of matching the 59 Ben Scrivens made for Edmonton on Jan. 29, 2014 against San Jose (the expansion era record for saves in a shutout). Varlamov’s career-high 54 saves set a Colorado record and trailed only Ron Tugnutt’s 70 on March 21, 1991 for Quebec at Boston (3-3 tie) in franchise history.
BLUELINE BOOST: Columbus hit the All-Star break having gotten the game-winning goal from a defenseman in six of its last seven victories. David
184
Savard and Kevin Connauton each had a pair in that span while Jack Johnson and James Wisniewski both produced one. Defensemen were responsible for 36 percent of the Blue Jackets’ goals (10 of 28) in their final 11 games before the All-Star break.
500: San Jose head coach Todd McLellan worked his 500th game behind an NHL bench on Jan. 8 at St. Louis. McLellan’s 293 wins in his first 500 games trailed only Bruce Boudreau’s 301 in his first 500 decisions. McLellan became the 64th head coach in NHL history to achieve the 500 milestone. STACKING SHUTOUTS: The Kings’ Martin Jones’ first three shutouts this season allowed him to become the fastest goaltender in modern-day NHL history to register seven career shutouts (29 games). Jones got to seven quicker than Steve Mason (32 games). The all-time record in that department belongs to Frank Brimsek of Boston, who needed just 22 games to record seven shutouts in 1939.

RULES CHANGES nhl.com
RULE 1.8
RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.
RULE 23
GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.
RULE 24
PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.
RULE 38
VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198
197
continued from page 197
referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.
RULE 57 TRIPPING
The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)
RULE 76 FACE-OFFS
To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.
RULE 64
DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME
* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.
RULE 85
PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.
RULE 1.9
RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
