The Penguins Pittsburgh, coming off a road trip in Florida after playing the Panthers and Lightning last week, plays seven of its final 10 December games at home. The Penguins play 10 home games this month, matching the franchise record for most home games in December (10 in 1990, with the Penguins going 6-3-1). . . The Penguins were three points off the top spot in the NHL standings when play began last week. . . Crosby was tied for the NHL lead in goals with 16 at that point and the Penguins had three of the top nine scorers in the league with Crosby (26 points), Evgeni Malkin (25) and Phil Kessel (24). . . Kessel had two goals in a 5-3 home win over Detroit on Dec. 3 and was still looking for his first hat trick in a Pittsburgh uniform at that point. He has five career hat tricks in the NHL. . . Before hosting Ottawa last week, the Penguins had received 12 points from their defense in the previous three games, including five from Ian Cole. . . Hornqvist had four points in his first three games back from a concussion, which cost him six games. . . Pittsburgh was 10-2-1 in its first 13 home games this season. . . Malkin had points in 10 straight home games (4+11) after picking up two assists in the win over the Red Wings. His longest such streak was 14 games as a rookie in 2006-07 (6+15). . . After playing the Coyotes and Bruins here this week, the Penguins will host Los Angeles on Friday night and play in Toronto the next night before returning here Dec. 20 to face the Rangers.

Season Ticket Holder
SPOTLIGHT
With whom do you attend Penguins home games? Usually my wife Lianne, son George, and daughter Shannon. What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? My son was nine at the time and playing peewee hockey at Southpointe. We enjoyed watching the Penguins practice. I heard an ad on the radio and decided it was a great way to spend quality time with my son while doing something we both enjoyed. We’ve been so fortunate to share so many great memories involving the Penguins and some of the players.
George McGrady Hometown: Carnegie, PA Season Ticket Location: Section 107
22 YEAR Penguins Season Ticket Holder
Aside from on-ice action, what do you enjoy most about attending Penguins games? The atmosphere and the people we’ve met. It’s just a great place to be with a lot of positive energy. What lesser known Penguins player (past or present) has left a lasting impression on you? What did he do to make that impression? Tyler Wright George with his wife, Lianne was with the Penguins years ago. One day while my son’s peewee team was practicing, he came out on the ice and skated with them. He was great with all of the kids and shared his time generously. The kids had a ball with him and he quickly became a favorite player of the boys. I remember my son keeping track of him even after he left the Penguins to play for Columbus. continued on page 15

What is the most unique keepsake in your personal collection of Penguins memorabilia? I have so many, but I’d have to say it’s a photo with Mario, myself, and my son when he was about 10 years old. What non-Penguins player do you enjoy seeing on PPG Paints Arena ice? It was Pavel Datsyuk and now it would probably be Steven Stamkos. What has been your favorite off-ice Penguins event to attend and why? Just recently it was the 6.6K race/walk because Mario is just a class act. He didn’t have to be there, but he showed up and shook hands with all the runners. It was a great bonus for him to bring the Cup as well. What is your favorite memory from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff run? We’ve been so blessed and spoiled in Pittsburgh. We have had some of the greatest hockey players in history play here and win here. I think more importantly in this day and age when you hear so much bad press involving high profile athletes, we’ve had a number of class acts and role models for our kids such as Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury, Pascal Dupuis, Chris Kunitz and many more. I’ve been fortunate in my lifetime to share four Stanley Cup Championships with my wife and children. I have friends and family in other cities that have not Joe Kelley, Laura Kelley, George McGrady, Shannon McGrady, Bryce Pfueffer and George McGrady Jr. at a Penguins game. experienced one. 15

8-3 victory over Anaheim on Dec. 4 marked the first time the Flames had scored eight goals in a game since March 22, 2014 (8-1 over Edmonton) and the first time Calgary had managed that many goals on home ice since March 1, 2000 (8-1 over the Penguins). The Flames’ onslaught included five goals in a span of 6:04 during the second period. Calgary hadn’t netted five goals in a period since the 2010-11 season (it was achieved twice) and hadn’t scored five times in a period at home since Nov. 3, 2001 (the first period of a 6-2 win over Montreal).

QUICK-STRIKE DEFENSEMAN:
Flyers rookie defenseman Ivan Provorov scored goals 31 seconds apart in a 3-1 victory over the Blackhawks on Dec. 3. That was the fastest pair of goals netted by a rookie blueliner since Dec. 15, 1995, when Winnipeg’s Deron Quint netted goals four seconds apart against Edmonton. VS
WELCOME TO NEW YORK: The Rangers’ 4-2 win over the Hurricanes on Dec. 3 extended the Blueshirts’ run of home-ice victories over Carolina to 13 in a row, the longest such stretch against one opponent in franchise history. The streak began on Jan. 5, 2011.

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the arena. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE Co-Owner
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. It is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure– selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager
Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager
Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach
Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach
Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.
JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach
Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

At this rate, the guys who run the highly-popular Barstool Sports website are going to have to make time to accommodate the entire Penguins’ roster the next time Pittsburgh visits the New York region. In late November, Ian Cole and Nick Bonino visited the Barstool headquarters in New York City and participated in the “El Pres Goalie Challenge” against site founder, David Portnoy. Just like nearly every other professional athlete that’s taken on the challenge of trying to score as many times as possible on 10 long-distance shots against Portnoy, both Cole and Bonino came up short. Bonino even tried putting on the pads himself to make 100 consecutive saves against Portnoy, but the 93rd shot was stopped by Bonino, banked off the back wall, then ricochet off Bonino to give Portnoy the win. Not only did that tally earn Portnoy the victory, but according to Cole, watching his ‘trick shot’ also gave both players the inspiration needed to return to the scoresheet. “I think all the credit goes to Barstool,” Cole told @PensInsideScoop’s Michelle Crechiolo after scoring his second goal of the year against Dallas on Dec. 1. “The things that I learned out there in New York from continued on page 66

‘El Pres’, enough can’t be said for the things that he taught me. The goal that he scored on Bones, I just learned a lot from that. Kudos to him. He’s an inspiration to all of us.” Whether it was inspiration or luck, right after their visit, Cole immediately went on a three-game point streak (1+4) and Bonino scored goals in back-to-back games for the first time since last March. For Cole, the offensive uptick drew attention to a player who has been one of Pittsburgh’s most underappreciated performers through the first quarter of the season. Spending most nights as a partner with the equally-as-hot Justin Schultz, Cole has played some of his most consistent hockey as a Penguin, which is a continuation of what he did throughout the second half of last year and during the Stanley Cup run. Entering the Penguins’ Dec. 5 home game with Ottawa, Cole led all Pittsburgh blueliners in both hits and blocked shots, and his plus-10 was second behind only Schultz (plus-11). Head coach Mike Sullivan has rewarded the duo with added ice time, something he said has been earned, rather than given. “We are trying to get guys on the ice that are going,” Sullivan explained after Cole tallied multiple points in his second-straight game for the first time in his career on Dec. 3. “My college coach always had a line that I think makes a whole lot of sense. ‘Those that play well will get rewarded with further play.’ This is a performancebased business. “The guys that play well need to get on the ice. I think theoretically that is how we run this team. We want guys to compete well. If players are playing well, it’s our obligation as coaches to reward them. I think that’s what they do. All players go through ebbs and flows. I think that pair is playing really well for us.” 66

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ELITE
MID-SEASON UPDATE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program is constantly working to improve and find new ways to develop their players. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex is home to one of the best youth hockey programs the U.S. has to offer. Every week brings a new challenge for each of the Penguins Elite teams, but that’s not a problem because the coaching staff has a lot of experience. We have some of the best hockey minds that the Western Pennsylvania community has to offer. Each team comes to the rink anywhere between three and five times a week, depending on their game schedules. One of those days is devoted to improving the players skating and skills, so they can advance onto something bigger and better. The Pittsburgh Penguins very own Ty Hennes (skills instructor) and Max Ivanov (power skating coach), work tirelessly to design specific plans for each team. This is a decision that was found to benefit not only the players but more importantly, the team as a whole. The coaches understand how much time needs to be taken in order to give the teams the best possible opportunity to succeed at the next level. As 2016 comes to a close, the Penguins Elite teams are approaching the mid-way of their seasons. The defending 2015-16 18U National Champions have gotten off to a great start this season going 23-6-3. They are already primed for a repeat with some of their top performers coming back this season, including goaltender, Chad Veltri. The 16U Penguins Elite girl’s squad has been one of the top performers for the organization thus far. They are off to an impressive start with a record of 19-1-4 in which they have beaten some of the top teams in the nation. They are now ranked fourth in the country and are looking to be the second Penguins Elite team to win a National Championship. Day-by-day the boys and girls of Penguins Elite are trying to develop as much as they can, both individually and as a team. As the teams work towards their ultimate goal of winning a national championship, we want to thank everyone involved in the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite organization for all the dedication and hard work put towards the athletes.

Penguins Profile:
PATRIC HORNQVIST
Mark Madden Right winger Patric Hornqvist missed six games with a concussion Nov. 18-26. During his absence, the Penguins’ power play went just 2-for-20. Hornqvist returned to the lineup Nov. 30 at Brooklyn. The Penguins didn’t score with the man advantage that night, but Hornqvist did the honors himself the next evening when the Penguins beat visiting Dallas, 6-2. Hornqvist’s second-period goal converted a five-on-three and staked the Penguins to a 2-1 lead. Hornqvist doesn’t have the flash of power-play cronies like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But he provides muscle, grit and an invaluable net-front presence. “To have a good power play, it’s essential to have a guy that’s willing to take a cross-check, get in the goalie’s eyes and impede his movement,” Coach Mike Sullivan said after the victory over Dallas. “It makes it really hard on the goaltender. “Horny’s one of the best. He’s willing to go there. He plays with a lot of courage. He takes pride in it. He creates a lot of opportunities for the other guys out there.” Hornqvist hoped his power-play goal against Dallas would spark that unit. “Obviously, that goal helps us,” Hornqvist said. “And in the third period, [the power play] got some great looks. “We got those second and third chances. We got the puck back. When we keep their guys on the ice a minute, or a minute and a half, they’re so tired. We just have to execute. [The power play] looks really good right now.” Hornqvist’s goal was a simple backhand finish between Dallas goaltender Antti Niemi’s pads after Malkin found him in the low slot with a nifty feed. “That was our first five-on-three the whole season,” Hornqvist noted. “They played really high out on [Kris Letang], Geno and Sid, and they just left me open in front. Geno found me there, and I got lucky with the five-hole.” Hornqvist, 29, also has a big role when the Penguins are at even strength. Lately, the 5-foot-11, 189-pound Swede has skated on a line with Crosby and Conor Sheary. “We’ve got a good combination right now,” Hornqvist said. “Shears is really strong on the puck, and fast. I just try to create space for those two. They can have the puck, and I’ll go to the net. “This is the best I’ve ever seen Sid play. It creates a lot of space for me and Shears.” continued on page 79

Crosby scored yet another highlight-reel goal against Dallas. With the score tied, 2-2, in the final minute of the second period, Crosby had the puck below the goal line to the right of the Stars net. He tried banking the puck in off Antti Niemi, but the puck rebounded back to Crosby. So he swatted the puck out of the air, off Niemi, and in. “There are only a few players in the league who bank those in, and it’s always the same guys,” said Hornqvist. “He tried it the first time, and then it went up in the air. So he tried that second one. If you have the skill, you might as well do it.” The victory over Dallas extended an incredible streak for the Penguins: They hadn’t lost two consecutive games in regulation since Dec. 19, 2015. As of the Penguins’ home game vs. Ottawa on Dec. 5, the streak covered 76 regularseason games and 24 playoff games: 100 games total. “We’re really determined out there,” Hornqvist said. “We do the right things over and over. That’s why we don’t lose two games in a row. Plain and simple right there. We always work hard. We always stop on pucks. We backcheck and block shots. We do all the things teams have to do to be successful. “But I still think we can be way better. It’s been an up-and-down season for us. It’s a good record to not lose two in a row for almost a year. So keep that going, and get a little better.” Hornqvist had six goals, 11 assists and a plus-four mark in his first 19 games this season. He had 22 goals and 29 assists in 82 regular-season games in 2015-16, then nine goals and four assists in 24 playoff games as the Penguins won the Stanley Cup. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

Syl Apps came to Pittsburgh in a trade with the New York Rangers on Jan. 26, 1971 — and quickly became one of the most prolific Penguins players in team history. The Toronto native led the Penguins in points for three straight years from 1971-74 as part of the famed Century Line with Jean Pronovost and Lowell McDonald. The son of a Hall of Famer, Syl Apps had his own fair share of memorable moments throughout his 12-year career — including being named MVP of the All-Star Game in 1975. Currently, Apps is ninth overall in Penguins career points (500), sixth in career assists (349) and tied for 14th in most career goals (151).

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as a blueprint for other NHL and professional organizations since its creation in 2010. In partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the program has helped reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes.
Since 2011, the Heads UP Pittsburgh has had great results in the youth sports community. n Over 125,000 individual players, coaches, and parents have been impacted by the free baseline testing and educational programs n Athletes in 30+ sports have been tested through funding from the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation n Over 12,000 conditioning aids, including flexibility kits, neck strengthening kits, and core strength balance discs have been distributed n New pediatric version of the baseline test targeted for athletes ages 7 to 9 is now available

In 2015, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit introduced the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation (PFF) STEAM Lending Library to schools districts in Allegheny County. This oneof-a-kind, first in the nation, program has given students the opportunity to explore technology that they may have never had access to otherwise. Stressing the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) learning in the region, the Library gives teachers the opportunity to borrow technology to use in their classrooms. The PPF STEAM Lending Library contains nearly 1,000 items, and to date, has impacted educators from 40 schools districts in Allegheny County.
Entering its third year, Tablets in Education has provided elementary students in 11 counties the opportunity to enhance their education through technology. Since its inception in 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has donated over 3,900 Kindle Fire tablets to over 200 school districts and special needs programs in the region; impacting over 100,000 students. Along with the support from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Tablets in Education continues to change the way students in our region learn. MIKE LANGE Penguins Radio Network Play-by-Play Announcer
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 42nd season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Penguins Radio Network Color Analyst
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 14th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey. 111
JOSH GETZOFF Radio Broadcast Host and PensTV Host
Josh Getzoff is in his second season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the sports director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Getzoff covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, he was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Getzoff has also worked as a sports anchor/reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

HOCKEY ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea!
118
2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
Keep your eyes on the puck! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
The arena is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

Since 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered to build a total of 12 dek hockey rinks for local communities through their unique Project Power Play program. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative that was designed to build one dozen dek rinks in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities over a four-year period. To support the program, Highmark provided $1.5 million in funding. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation also provided funding for the project. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities provided the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. The rinks are multi-purpose courts and are suitable for hockey and other sports; including, soccer and lacrosse. All rink sites were chosen based on a community’s need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming. Citiparks and local athletic associations continue to program the rinks, with the assistance from the Penguins organization.

LITTLE PLAYS TO
BIG PLAYS
Mike Prisuta
Hockey games are often won with sizzling shots and spectacular saves, but more often than not little plays add up to big ones along the way. The Penguins spent their first 25 games this season reacquainting themselves with the importance of doing the little things the way they need to be done, especially as it relates to:
Shooting with a purpose beyond scoring a goal “I think that’s the new game,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “So many teams are throwing pucks from off the angles and from the blueline on the goal, and then the rebound goes somewhere and it’s hard to defend that area of the rink. We’ve been trying to encourage our team just to deliver pucks to the net. It’s not always about shoot to score. It’s trying to shoot for a next play, to create a next play or a next opportunity. “That’s something that we try to work on daily. We’re certainly encouraging our guys to try to do more of it. We’re looking for that next play and sometimes that next play is not there. Sometimes just that shot on goal, regardless of where it comes on the rink, breaks down the coverage or at least has a chance to break down the coverage.”
Shooting, period “We want to be a team that puts pucks on the net and goes to the net and forces teams to defend inside the dots other than unique circumstances, like a 5-on-3 or something of that nature that we may say, ‘Let’s be a little more selective on when we shoot or how we shoot or where we shot from,’” Sullivan explained. “The 3-on-3 overtime is another one where we might be a little bit more selective on the shot locations and things like that. “Other than those unique circumstances, I don’t think it’s ever a bad play to put the puck on the net.”
Penalty-killing “It starts with the first face-off,” Sullivan maintained. “I don’t think our faceoff percentage has been nearly as high as it’s been in the past. I think we can do a better job making the (offensive-zone) entry more difficult. We’ve tried to work at that through film and showing areas where we can improve and bring cooperative effort. I think we can clear pucks better than we have in the first continued on page 151

continued from page 148
part of the season. When you look at some of the goals we’ve given up, a lot of them, the impetus of them has been a failed clearing attempt where we have some time and space or we’ve got an opportunity to get the puck 200 feet and we don’t.”
Net-front presence (Something the Penguins’ power play lacked when Patric Hornqvist and Chris Kunitz were injured) “We were looking for someone that could fill that role and go to the net and take the goalie’s eyes away and retrieve pucks and do all that grunt work that’s so critically important to helping the power play be successful,” Sullivan emphasized. “I think we all gain an appreciation for how good Hornqvist and Kunitz are at those thankless jobs. It’s hard to replace those guys because they’re so good at it.”
Young players playing their game no matter who they’re playing with (Something Jake Guentzel did nicely upon his recall from the AHL) “It can be intimidating for a young player to play with star players like an Evgeni Malkin or a Phil Kessel or a Sidney Crosby,” Sullivan observed. “What I like about Jake, we played him with those guys during the course of the exhibition season and we liked his game. We didn’t think he was trying to get them the puck all the time. He was just playing his game. “That’s a tendency with young players when they play with players of that nature. They tend to want to just get them the puck all the time, sometimes at the wrong times rather than just taking what the game presents. “I don’t sense that with Jake. He has a quiet confidence about him. He knows he’s a good player and he can play with those guys.” 151

DOWN UNDER Penguins Foundation’s Annual Wine Tasting A Huge Success The Penguins Foundation hosted its Sixth Annual VIP Dinner & Wine Tasting Gala presented by Highmark on November 14 with proceeds earmarked to support the Foundation’s special needs programs. The event theme this year was Australia with 72 wines available to taste from the Land Down Under, New Zealand and throughout the world! Guests at the VIP Cocktail Reception were entertained by the sounds of an Aboriginal didgeridoo and experienced an upclose look at two Black continued on page 163

Kites, a bird of prey found in Australia, compliments of the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. The VIP Dinner in the Lexus Club featured four courses with an Australian flair, while hand-painted boomerangs imported special for the event were the highlight of the table décor. Each VIP guest also received an adopted “little penguin” from Australia’s Penguin Foundation located on Phillip’s Island off the coast of Melbourne. At the main event, unique décor transformed the PPG Paints Arena floor into the Australian Outback with nine pieces of authentic Aboriginal artwork, Australian photography by Joe Ireland and flowers and fauna from the region. The event’s special guest was “Boomer,” a baby kangaroo courtesy of the Columbus Zoo. Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed cuisine featuring the flavors of Australia and had an opportunity to bid on a vast array of unique silent auction items including a Trip for Two to Sydney, Australia provided by AAA Travel and Delta Airlines, and a one-of-a-kind Penguins’ commemorative 50th Anniversary chess set handcrafted by Wendell August Forge. While listening to Australian-style tunes by the musical trio of Walt Churchey, Jackie Kopco and Jim Churchey, guests mingled with members of the Penguins coaching staff, hockey operations department, team alumni and current Penguins players. A great time was had by all!

PENGUINS IN THE CLASSROOM …
TEACHING STEAM!
Chartiers Valley Middle School
Chartiers Valley Middle School’s STEAM classroom kicked off the school year with the Penguin’s Future Goals — Hockey Scholar program for a unit on how math intersects with the real world. Students greatly enjoyed the interactive simulations and game-like environment in which these lessons are taught. One student said, “I enjoy math. I enjoy hockey. It’s nice to see them used together in real life!” Many of the students are avid Penguins fans and this program has built off of that passion to make learning fun. Teachers enjoy the fact that lessons can be self-paced, allowing students who are advanced to go at a faster pace and students who need more time to move without being rushed. The review exams at the end of each section also give students immediate feedback on their learning progress. “I love how Future Goals makes real life connections to show us how math is used in real life settings all over the world,” said another STEAM class student. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of hockey while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. If you’re a 5th-8th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

TO THE ICE Bryan Rust netted two goals in Game Seven of the Eastern Conference Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning this past spring, fulfilling a childhood dream and allowing the Penguins to advance to the Stanley Cup Final. However, it hasn’t always been this way. ‘Little Rust,’ as he’s known to friends and family, spent a portion of his childhood saving goals instead of scoring them. “We played a lot of street hockey in my neighborhood,” the Michigan native said. “There was a cul-de-sac right behind my house and there was always a group of neighborhood kids who would get together and play in the street back there. I was always the youngest so they would always throw me in net.” Even though Rust wasn’t the best goaltender, those days playing street hockey led to a chain reaction of the neighborhood kids transitioning to ice. “My older brother’s best friend down the street played, so he played, and obviously I had to be like my older brother and do whatever he does, so I eventually got into it,” Rust smiled. “It took him and I a long way.” Rust’s older brother Matt was a four-year

letterman for the University of Michigan before being drafted by the Florida Panthers. Matt was even the first of the Rust brothers to play for the Penguins organization, spending the 2011-12 season with Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League. Not to be outdone, Bryan followed in his brother’s footsteps. Rust spent four years at the University of Notre Dame and was drafted in the third round by Pittsburgh in 2010. In WB/S, Rust played 63 games over portions of three seasons, tallying 16 goals and 33 points. While Rust’s first call up came in 2014, it was his performance during last season’s Stanley Cup run that earned the 24-year-old a spot in Pittsburgh. In 23 playoff games, Rust scored nine points, six being crucial goals — the most by a Penguins rookie since Jan Hrdina had four goals in 1999. The right wing had three points (2+1) in the series clinching Game Five against the New York Rangers in the second round, a sneak peek of what Rust would achieve in the Eastern Conference Final. Rust tallied two goals in the second period of Game Seven of the Eastern Conference Final, which stood as Pittsburgh’s lone points in the match and made him the eighth rookie in history to have multiple goals in a Game Seven. continued on page 175

“For me it’s one of those things that you dream about as a kid,” Rust said. “Playing in a big Game Seven, scoring the big goals and being in the spotlight for a little while, that’s something I’m always going to remember and that I’m going to cherish. That game as a whole, we played so well that I just happened to be that guy who was on the other end of those scoring opportunities.” The Penguins went on to defeat the San Jose Sharks for the Stanley Cup. “I’m pretty lucky to even win it at all, but even luckier to have won it so early in my first year in the league,” Rust said. “To have that opportunity and be able to learn from it, it kind of helps me move forward with my career and give me lessons and memories that I’m never going to forget.” continued on page 176

Some of the lessons he learned were resilience, patience and hard work, which came in handy when Rust missed all of training camp and the first three games of the 2016-17 season with an undisclosed injury. “Any time you come into a training camp and you aren’t fully physically ready, it’s going to take a toll on you mentally and physically,” Rust said. “I wasn’t able to get my legs under me and wasn’t able to get in as good of shape as I would’ve liked coming in when I first started playing games. I was kind of a step behind with the systems, playmaking and chemistry with the guys.” Rust notched his first goal of the season on Nov. 2 against the Anaheim Ducks, which he said helped his confidence after struggling to find his legs in his first couple games. “When you can get that monkey off your back and get that first one, that’s something that’s going to help me confidence-wise. Not only with getting more points, but just playing my game in general,” Rust said. However, Rust is still looking to fine-tune his game. “I’m just trying to work on that finishing touch and maybe more playmaking,” Rust said. “I can’t lose focus on what type of player I am, with my work ethic and playing both ends of the ice. I want to work on those areas a little more.” Rust’s tremendous Game Seven may never have occurred if not for those days playing street hockey in Troy, Michigan, which made him realize that goaltending just wasn’t for him. “My team wasn’t the best and I’m sure I wasn’t that great, and that made me think that I’d rather score goals than get scored on,” Rust said.
