WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? I taught elementary Physical Education and it helped motivate my students into liking hockey. I sat on the glass where the visitors came onto the ice, so I started buying opponentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; jerseys. I would wear them to school and it was easy for my students to pick me out on TV. I have all teams covered and at least 8-10 Penguins jerseys. I wore a Penguins jersey once during playoffs and we lost, so the people around me told me to go back to the opposite jersey. WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? I take my friends. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CURRENT PITTSBURGH PENGUINS PLAYER? I root for Olli Maatta because I have survived cancer and have had my thyroid taken out. WHAT CURRENT PLAYER OR TEAM IS YOUR FAVORITE PENGUINS OPPONENT AND WHY? I also used to bring some of my students to games when I still taught. They still stop and see me when they come to a game. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO WEAR OR BRING TO A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? As I said before, wearing the opponentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s jerseys during the game. I am smart enough during the playoffs to wear a Penguins jersey into the game and change back again to walk out. DO YOU OWN PITTSBURGH PENGUINS MEMORABILIA OR CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS MEMORABILIA COLLECTOR? I have collected hockey cards and autographs when I can. I have at least 30 sticks and pucks, many of which are signed. I also have at least 20 signed jerseys. On Dec. 27 the Penguins face the Washington Capitals for the first time this season. Pittsburgh has won eight consecutive games against Washington, its longest winning streak against the Capitals. Washington once won nine straight games over the Penguins, from Dec. 2, 1984 to Nov. 20, 1985. . . The Penguins’ current streak against the Capitals began with a 4-3 overtime win here on Jan. 22, 2012; their last loss to Washington came on the road Jan. 11, 2012 (0-1). . . Before this eight-game win streak, Pittsburgh was 3-9-3 in its previous 15 games against Washington. . . Sidney Crosby has 17 goals and 50 points in 29 career games against the Capitals, while Evgeni Malkin has nine goals and 39 points in 26 career games against them. Alexander Ovechkin has 23 goals and 41 points in 35 games against Pittsburgh. . . Crosby (4+11) and Malkin (2+11) both have points in seven straight against Washington; Ovechkin has been kept off the scoresheet in three of the last four games against the Penguins. Each of Ovechkin’s last eight goals scored against Pittsburgh have come on the road. . . On New Year’s Eve Pittsburgh faces the Carolina Hurricanes for the third time this season. The Penguins suffered a 4-2 home defeat to Carolina on Nov. 28, then earned a 3-2 victory the next night in Raleigh. Pittsburgh is 9-3-0 in its last 12 games against the Hurricanes. . . Jiri Tlusty had two goals and an assist in the Hurricanes’ win here, while Christian Ehrhoff’s first goal in a Pittsburgh uniform was the winner in Raleigh. . . The Penguins have lost two straight home games to Carolina and haven’t dropped three straight here since Jan. 20, 2009 through March 20, 2010. . . Carolina is three-forfour on the power play in its last two games here. . . The Penguins have gone five straight games without a power play goal against the Hurricanes (0-for-9). . . Pittsburgh has won only two of its last nine games on New Year’s Eve (2-6-1) but has won two of its last three at home. . . This is the latest starting time for a New Year’s Eve home game since 1977, when Wayne Bianchin’s hat trick helped the Penguins to a 6-3 win over the Cleveland Barons in a game that started at 8:05 p.m. The last time Pittsburgh played a Dec. 31 game that did not begin in the afternoon was in 2002, when the Penguins suffered a 5-2 loss at Columbus in a game that started at 7:05. . . The Carolina game here on Dec. 31 is the opener of a four-game homestand for Pittsburgh, which hosts Tampa Bay on Jan. 2 and Montreal on Jan. 3 before closing the homestand Jan. 7 vs. Boston . . . The Penguins began play the week of Christmas second in the NHL’s overall standings after a 3-1 home win over Florida gave the Penguins a three-game winning streak. . . The first three months of the Mike Johnston Era have been as productive as they’ve been revealing. The 20-6-4 slate the Penguins crafted through their first 30 games this season secured for Johnston the second-best record of any active NHL head coach in the first 30 games of his rookie campaign (Todd McLellan of San Jose went 25-3-2 to start the 2008-09 season). For Johnston and the Penguins, much was learned and much was confirmed in the process. FOR EXAMPLE: Johnston likes mobile defensemen that can move the puck and join the rush, but not exclusively when it comes to rounding out a blueline crew for a game night: “I’d probably ideally like four good puck-moving, skating defensemen and then two more physical, defensive-type defensemen in your group,” he said. Winger Blake Comeau is top-six capable up front: “You look at his shot totals, you look at his scoring production [11 goals, 19 points, 67 shots through 31 games], he’s certainly shown he has the ability, for sure, to be a top-six forward,” Johnston said. A little faith goes a long way as it relates to Comeau’s game: “I feel like I got a lot of confidence back this year to make plays,” he said. “Obviously, there are going to be mistakes made. I don’t feel like if I make one mistake the opportunity is going to be taken away.” continued on page 24

Fleury can thrive in a system that strives to limit second chances and seeks to defend from the crease out: “That’s good when you don’t have to worry about a second puck or the back door,” he said. “You can just focus on the shooter and one shot; you have to make the save. It makes the game more simple.” Fleury is making it as easy for the Penguins’ skaters as they’re making it for him: “I’d like to think we’re playing better ‘D’ for him but he’s still making those big saves,” winger Chris Kunitz said. “He’s keeping us in games. There’s a comfort level, maybe, with the way our ‘D’ are playing, with the way the forwards are coming back. But Marc-Andre competes every single night. He’s getting rewarded now.” Young players forced into the lineup as injury replacements aren’t just there to take up space. They can make an early impression, as Rust, among others, has done: “I really like his stick,” Johnston said. “I think he has a very good stick. When the puck is on his stick he can make a play quickly. He can get a shot away quickly. I think he has a good offensive upside.” It’s pretty difficult to top the experience of scoring your first NHL goal in your first NHL game, as Pouliot did on Dec. 20 against Florida: “You dream about that moment happening,” he said. “It’s incredible.” The Penguins aren’t as quick to fluster or become frustrated this season: “This year we’ve been sticking with our system, we’ve been patient with it,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “It’s been better.” Crosby appreciates dealing with the media much more when he’s playing: “It’s much better talking about hockey than other stuff,” he said.

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. Jim Rutherford is in his first season as the Penguins GM after being hired on June 6, 2014. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 20 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) ‘Executive of the Year’, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) ‘Executive of the Year’ in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships. JASON BOTTERILL ASSOCIATE GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his first season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WBS Penguins have made the playoffs all five years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final (2013 and ‘14). Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 38, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minorleague games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. During the ’94 and ’95 WJCs, Botterill was coached by current Penguins head coach Mike Johnston. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

TOM FITZGERALD ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Tom Fitzgerald is in his first season as assistant general manager after spending the previous five seasons as the Penguins assistant to the GM from 2009-14. Fitzgerald’s duties include monitoring Penguins’ prospects playing in college, junior hockey, Europe and with the club’s American Hockey League affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Additionally, he advises GM Jim Rutherford on all personnel decisions. Fitzgerald was named interim assistant coach of the Penguins on Feb. 15, 2009 and helped the club win its third Stanley Cup championship four months later. He began his executive career as the Penguins player development coach in 2007-08. Drafted in the first round (17th overall) by the New York Islanders in the 1986 NHL Draft, Fitzgerald played 17 seasons in the NHL, appearing in 1,097 career games where he recorded 329 career points (139G-190A). He has represented his country nationally three times — once with Team USA at the 1987 World Junior Championship and twice in the World Championships (1989, ’91).

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his first season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

Jason Karmanos is in his first season as the vice president of hockey operations after being named to his current position on June 12, 2014. Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. MIKE JOHNSTON HEAD COACH

Mike Johnston is in his first season as head coach of the Penguins after being named to his position on June 25, 2014. Johnson had spent the past six years as the general manager/head coach of the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 2008-13, where he helped turn Portland into a Canadian Hockey League powerhouse and perennial contender. Under Johnston’s guidance, Portland made four straight WHL Championship berths (2010-14), winning the WHL championship and earning a Memorial Cup berth in 2012-13. During that time his team won four straight conference championships. Johnston’s teams are known for their offensive prowess — during his six seasons with Portland, his team’s goals for total rose each year from 176 in 2008-09 to a league-leading 338 in ‘13-14. Johnston also served two NHL stints as assistant/associate coach of the Vancouver Canucks (1999-06) and associate coach of the Los Angeles Kings (2006-08). With Johnston’s help, Vancouver made four straight trips to the postseason and won the Northwest Division crown in 2003-04. He has represented his country multiple times internationally, including serving as assistant coach of Canada’s 1998 Olympic Team. As an assistant/associate coach for Team Canada, he has won five medals (2 gold; 2 silver; 1 bronze) at the World Championships and two gold medals at the World Junior Championships. Among the players he has coached with Canada are Jonathan Toews, Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz, Martin Brodeur, Jarome Iginla, Rob Blake and Martin St. Louis. Johnston has authored three books with former NHL player Ryan Walter: “Simply the Best: Insights and Strategies from Great Hockey Coaches”, “Simply the Best: Players on Performance” and “Hockey Plays and Strategies”. He played college hockey at Brandon University in Manitoba and Acadia University in Nova Scotia and has a Master’s Degree in coaching science from Acadia University. RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his first season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The 4-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

GARY AGNEW ASSISTANT COACH

Gary Agnew is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Penguins. Prior to joining Pittsburgh, Agnew was an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues for two seasons from 2012-14, helping the Blues win the fifth-most games in the NHL during that span (81). Agnew spent four years as an assistant coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2006-10, where he helped the Blue Jackets earn a postseason berth for the first time in franchise history in 2008-09. As head coach of the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch from 2000-06, Agnew won a franchise-record 220 games, and he led Syracuse to its first-ever division title in 2001-02. He also has 14 years of coaching experience in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), including 11 as a head coach. He has won over 350 career OHL games with London (1989-94, ‘97-00), Kingston (1994-97) and Oshawa (2011-12). Agnew was named OHL Coach of the Year twice — in 1993 and ’98. MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his second season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury won 39 games in 2013-14 and tied his career high by recording five shutouts. Bales was also key to Jeff Zatkoff’s development in his first NHL season where he posted a 12-6-2 record, 2.61 GAA and .912 save percentage. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/General Counsel and oversaw the construction and development of CONSOL Energy Center — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He is the organization’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities and works closely with AEG on all arena-related events and initiatives. In recent years, CONSOL Energy Center has hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Second and Third Rounds, the 2012 NHL Draft, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four and the 2014 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Williams also is the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams graduated from Penn State University and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. He lives in Nevillewood with his wife, Nichole, and six children.

David Peart is in his fifth full season as Senior Vice President of Sales and Service, overseeing all local revenue generating departments for the team including business partnerships, corporate sales, premium seating, ticket sales, broadcasting, and concession and merchandise sales strategy. Under his direction, the Penguins created the team’s Founding Partner Program at CONSOL Energy Center and launched one of the most comprehensive fan engagement initiatives in sports. In 2014, Peart was awarded the InStadium Experience Innovation Award presented by Sports and Entertainment Alliance in Technology for his work with the Penguins’ PensPoints loyalty program. Peart has held senior-level positions with the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. The Kennedy Township native is a graduate of Point Park University, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees. He and his wife, Julie, have two children.

POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark will KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE have completed five more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-ofits-kind Project Power Play program enters its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Renzie Park in McKeesport, Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin in Oakdale, North Park in Allison Park and Bloomfield Park in Pittsburgh. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. One more rink will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

Steve Kolbe enters his second season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kolbe spent 14 seasons (1997-2011) as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Washington Capitals, broadcasting over 1100 games. His voice has been heard internationally on the NHL Network, XM Radio, NHL Radio, and ESPN. Kolbe broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 and the NHL Winter Classic in 2011, and he was featured on the NHL Network’s documentary Voices in 2008. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Kolbe has over 25 years of broadcasting experience, and most recently has been a co-host of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) as well as talk show host for Major League Baseball coverage and NHL insider on CBS Radio 105.7 in Baltimore. Kolbe is a 1989 graduate of Michigan State University and earned a B.A. in telecommunications.

NHL YOUTH CUP RECAP By: Joey Sykes

After finishing strong at the second annual NHL Youth Cup Tournament presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, the Penguins Elite proved why they are one of the premier youth hockey organizations not only here in Pittsburgh, but also across the country. The 2004 Penguins Elite grouping stole the show Sunday afternoon at Robert Morris University’s Island Sports Center after dominating their age grouping in the tournament. They beat Philadelphia’s Team Comcast in the finals, 8-2, to take home the championship for the second straight year. Head coach Ray Conway and assistant coach Jeff Hannan backed the team to their victory. “We’re fortunate with what we have in the coaching staff throughout the organization,” Hannan said. “We’re fortunate enough that the parents can afford to do this because it is expensive and it’s a lot of hard work that a lot of people don’t see. “It’s our second year in a row winning it, so we had some new kids this year that got to experience it for the first time, which is really neat.” Rick Boysen, father of Penguins Elite player Ryan Boysen, agrees with Hannan. “The Penguins Elite is a great organization and they develop the kids well, but they remember the fundamentals of having fun continued on page 89

at all levels,” Boysen said. “It’s great for these kids to get together to bond as well and travel around the country.” The NHL Youth Cup featured eight AAA NHLaffiliated youth teams across six age divisions, including the Penguins Elite. Pittsburgh hosted one event for each major birth year (2000, ’02, ’04) for the tournament, while Philadelphia hosted one event from each minor birth year (2001, ’03, ’05). In addition to the Penguins Elite, the tournament played host to Team Comcast, the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, the Mid Fairfield Rangers, the Suffolk P.A.L. Islanders and the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes, as well as the Nashville Jr. Predators and Washington Little Caps, who are new to the event. “It was good,” Hannan said about the tournament. “We put a lot of hard work into it. Bringing in all these NHL clubs was great. It’s good to see the kids’ hard work pay off.” Scott Sroka, whose son Owen plays on the 2004 team, enjoyed seeing his boy have success again in this tournament and attributes their success to the coaching staff. “It’s great,” Sroka said. “We were in Philadelphia last year and we won that year and we won again this year, so it’s a great opportunity to showcase the sport and the elite level teams with the NHL Youth Cup. “The kids worked really hard this year and overcame some great obstacles and won again this year. They worked harder than ever and had great coaching.” The tournament was a big success and entertaining for all involved, and the players and their families even received a special treat after the event concluded. Lord Stanley’s Cup made an appearance in the lobby of the Island’s Sports Center, where people gathered around to snap photos with the Cup and gaze at the names of champions. “That’s really cool for them,” Hannan said. “Especially since a lot of those kids see it on T.V. and have seen the Penguins win it in the past. To see it first hand is really cool for them.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. HOCKEY IS FOR

EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. Now in its third season, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite is one of the country’s premier youth hockey organizations. A joint effort of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and corporate partner DICK’S Sporting Goods, Penguins Elite offers a comprehensive program for player development and includes 14 teams in various age group — nine boys’ teams and five girls’ teams. The program features an outstanding coaching staff, professional management, world-class training facilities and access to elite-level competition — along with proven academic and career guidance.

In 2014-15, Penguins Elite boys’ teams will range from Squirt Minor through Midget Major, including a U15 team. Girls teams will be offered at 19&U, 16&U, 14&U, 12&U and 10&U age groups. The funding provided by DICK’S Sporting Goods and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has reduced player participation fees by nearly 35% annually. When Rob Klinkhammer came to Pittsburgh from Arizona via trade Dec. 5, he got the dressing area right next to captain Sidney Crosby. That’s not all good. “I heard it wasn’t a preferred spot because of all the big media scrums after games,” Klinkhammer said. “But it’s nice to sit by him.” Klinkhammer made an impact not long after joining the Penguins, punching in an insurance goal with 2:47 remaining in the team’s 3-1 home victory over Calgary on Dec. 12. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound left wing had a goal and assist in his first six games with the Penguins. The goal vs. Calgary was a beauty: Steve Downie made a slick cross-rink feed to Klinkhammer at the edge of the crease. Klinkhammer steered the puck home. “Geno [Malkin] went down the wall to Downs, and Downs took it wide,” Klinkhammer said. “He kind of looked over at me, and made a perfect pass. A saucer pass right on my tape. “I just whacked it toward the net. I wanted to go far side, but it came off my stick odd and went short side. “Anything that goes in, I’ll take it.” Klinkhammer says his adjustment period upon arriving in Pittsburgh has been brief and productive. “Every [team] kind of plays the same-style game,” said the Alberta native. “But these guys are obviously a lot more offensive. continued on page 162

A little more creative. Whereas Arizona is a little more defensiveminded. “But there are little adjustments, definitely, that you’ve got to get used to.” Klinkhammer, 28, didn’t differentiate between practice and games when it comes to finding a comfort level in Pittsburgh. “It’s familiarity,” Klinkhammer said. “It’s just ice time, whether it be practice, or whether it be games. As long as I can get out there and start playing the systems, and kind of learn where my linemates go. “I’m feeling better, but it takes time. One or two practices, it’s good, it’s a step in the right direction. The more I skate with the guys, the better it’s going to feel.” With the Penguins, linemates are hardly set in stone. Injuries and illness have taken care of that. No matter, says Klinkhammer: “There’s a lot of good players here. I’m happy to skate with any of them.” Coach Mike Johnston was pleased with Klinkhammer’s salad days in Pittsburgh: “Rob’s coming from a good organization, a well-coached team in Arizona, and you could see right away his habits and his details in his game, which is nice to have.” Klinkhammer has played parts of five seasons in the NHL. Last year was his first full campaign. Klinkhammer got 11 goals and nine assists in 72 games with Phoenix. He had three goals in 19 games with the Coyotes this season before being swapped to the Penguins in exchange for defenseman Philip Samuelsson. Klinkhammer has played with four different teams during his brief NHL career. “It’s not the first time I’ve been traded and probably won’t be the last,” Klinkhammer said. “It’s a whirlwind. You’ve got to wrap things up back home, then get on a plane, get here, get ready for a quick game. You’ve got family to worry about. It’s part of the business, though.” Klinkhammer is big, and tries to play big. “I think it was pretty physical,” said Klinkhammer when discussing the win over Calgary. “You can always do a little more. “We had three days [between games], so we were trying to bang off the rust. Playing a team that played the night before [Calgary lost 4-3 at Buffalo], that’s going to wear them down.” Klinkhammer might not ever fill the net. His game helps in other ways. But against Calgary, Klinkhammer just couldn’t help himself. “Right on my tape,” he said, smiling. “I didn’t have to do much.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

LETANG THRIVING IN NEW SYSTEM By: Michelle Crechiolo

With Pittsburgh holding a 2-1 lead early in the third period of the Penguins’ fourth game of the season against the New York Islanders on Oct. 18, speedy winger Cory Conacher got behind defenseman Kris Letang and went in on a breakaway. Letang was forced to take a hooking penalty in order to prevent the potential tying goal. Fortunately for Letang, his teammates were able to kill off the minor and he returned to the bench with his proverbial tail between his legs, knowing he’d misread the play. As he took a seat, assistant coach Gary Agnew, who deals with the defensemen, leaned over Letang and joked of Conacher, “He looks like a young Agnew flying down the ice!” Agnew’s remark made Letang laugh, which helped him put the breakdown behind him and move on. “One thing I’ve improved this year is say I make a mistake. While Gary minds mistakes, he’s going to make sure my brain is not stuck on it,” Letang explained. “He’s going to make sure I forget about it. So either he’s going to

tell me a joke, or he’s going to make me think of something else. But he allows me to move on, forget about the mistake and go on to the next shift and make a better play.” And ever since, mistakes like that have been few and far between for Letang this season. The biggest difference this year is that Letang doesn’t try to force anything that’s not there or make any unnecessary high-risk plays from the blue line or in the defensive zone. “I’m playing with a different system, so it allows me to hold on to the puck a little bit more and make sure I don’t rush myself into plays I’m not comfortable with,” Letang said. “I think it’s improved my game so I don’t make as many turnovers trying to get it up the wall or get it up the middle. That’s something we’ve been working on for quite a while.” Letang loves the way the Penguins’ first-year coaching staff — Agnew, fellow assistant Rick Tocchet and head coach Mike Johnston — have the team playing. “If you look through our lineup, obviously we all know that [Evgeni Malkin or Sidney Crosby] are the force up there for us,” Letang said. “But when you want to be successful, you have to work with your assets. And I think Mike tried to establish that our assets are the offense. Those guys need the puck, they need to keep having the puck on their tape to be dangerous and that’s what we do. We are a puck possession team right now, and that’s allowed us to have the puck more often and give them a better chance to have success too. “At the end of the day, you’re either buying in or not. Obviously I love the way we’re doing regroups and the way we play with the puck. We control the puck. A lot of aspects of it bring us to do less turnovers and be more in control.” Letang’s certainly been doing his part as well to create offense while being responsible defensively. find the balance between being creative while filling a shutdown role. He’s been noticeable for all the right reasons. For example, in just his second game back after missing seven straight with a groin injury, Letang was absolutely dominant in the Penguins’ 4-3 shootout loss to Columbus on Saturday, Dec. 13. He scored twice, including the game-tying goal with 10.9 seconds left in regulation, while finishing with a plus-3 rating and logging a team-high 25:44 minutes against a physically punishing, smothering Blue Jackets team. “The possession, it means hanging onto the puck, making sure you don’t force plays when it’s not there or when you don’t feel like you’re going be able to make a play right,” Letang said. “So right now, we rely on our skill, we have a system to follow, but sometimes, you can’t always do the same play over and over. You have to read. I think that’s the biggest change for me especially, and it allows me to be more patient and have the puck longer on my stick.” So far, Letang is having what’s shaping up to be the best season of his career. Which is saying a lot, considering he already has a Stanley Cup, was a Norris Trophy finalist in 2013 and is a two-time NHL All-Star. “I’m still adjusting a little bit to the new system, but I think the way that the coaches and the new guys are adjusting to me or to other players, it’s been nice,” Letang said. “The coaches make us really comfortable [with] the new system. Every adjustment, they’re going to come to you, they’re going to explain it to you. It’s been a good transition for me, and obviously with the style of play that we’re trying to get, I’m just happy to be in that.”

PRANK DESPRES By: Michelle Crechiolo

Poor Simon Despres. His teammates never miss a chance to mess with him when the opportunity presents itself. It all started back during the 2011-12 season, when Despres played 18 NHL games with the Penguins. When the team was on the road in Carolina that year, Despres’ dress shirt ‘went missing,’ forcing him to wear a workout T-shirt with his suit jacket. Shortly after that, unknown pranksters strung his street clothes (a leather jacket, pants and shoes) in the rafters of CONSOL Energy Center before a practice. The items were hooked onto a hanger and lowered on a wire about 30 feet above the ice. While his teammates left him alone for a while after that, they picked back up again today as the 23-year-old defenseman was the victim of yet another practical joke. First, a little background. With the Penguins in the offensive zone in the first period of Dec 15’s 4-2 win over Tampa Bay, Despres took a shot from the center of the blue line that was blocked in the slot and cleared towards the boards. As Despres raced to the wall to try and hold the zone, he lost his footing and smashed into the boards. Hard. The morning of Dec 17, an anonymous player or two and an unidentified trainer decided to construct a ‘chalk outline’ of Despres at the scene of the incident using yellow tape. They got creative by using black tape to give him a helmet and put his jersey number (47) on the chest of the stick figure. “We’ll leave who was behind it anonymous, but there were several players,” center Brandon Sutter said before laughingly backtracking, “Well, let’s say a couple players and maybe a trainer. Or maybe it was one player and one trainer that decided to put a little artwork on the boards today for practice. “I think we laughed pretty hard last game — well, we didn’t really laugh at the time, but after the game it was pretty funny when ‘Desi’ decided to hit himself face-first into the boards. Luckily he was OK and we’re glad he’s back practicing.” I didn’t get a chance to ask Despres what he thought about this latest tomfoolery after practice, as his gear was already in his stall when the locker room opened for the media. But I did see him in the hallway as he was leaving, and Despres laughed about the prank — even showing me the play in question on his iPad.

MAKING THEM COUNT: Vancouver D Chris Tanev doesn’t score goals very often, but when he does he has a habit of making them count. Tanev’s tally 18 seconds into overtime on Dec. 20 against Calgary was his second goal of the season, the 10th of his career and his fourth gamewinning goal. That’s a trend Tanev began when he scored his first career goal to beat Edmonton on Feb. 4, 2013.

TIP OF THE CAP TO TIPPET: Arizona head coach Dave Tippett worked his 900th game behind an NHL bench on Dec. 20 when the Coyotes played the Kings. Tippett is the 30th coach in NHL history to hit the 900-game plateau. Heading into a game on Dec. 22 at Vancouver Tippett ranked third in the NHL in wins since the 2002-03 season with 475 for Dallas and Arizona, behind Mike Babcock (501, Anaheim-Detroit) and Joel Quenneville (491, St. LouisColorado-Chicago).

Tippett was the winningest coach in Coyotes franchise history through 32 games this season with a regular-season record of 204-143-61 (.575).

MILESTONE GAME: C David Backes became the 10th player in St. Louis Blues history to appear in 600 games for the team when he suited up on Dec. 20 against San Jose. At that juncture Backes had 372 career points and 1,762 career hits and was one of three players in the league to have amassed 350 points and 1,700 hits since Backes joined the NHL in 2006-07 (the others were Alex Ovechkin of the Capitals and Dustin Brown of the Kings).

SHOOTOUT/ SHUTOUT SPECIALIST: Sabres G Jhonas Enroth went 4-0 in his first four shootouts this season and allowed just one goal on 18 attempts for a save percentage of .944. Enroth also became the first goaltender in NHL history to record his first four shutouts by a 1-0 count when he beat the Kings, 1-0, on Dec. 9.

PENGUINS HONOR 2014 BOB JOHNSON MEMORIAL

SCHOLARSHIP WINNER On November 26, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Penguins Booster Club honored the 2014 Pittsburgh Penguins Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship winner, Kellen Carleton. Carleton, a Central Catholic High School graduate, was selected as the winner of the 2014 Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship and received the $5,000 award. The scholarship is presented each year to a western Pennsylvania high school senior for academic excellence, community service and for providing leadership, sportsmanship and a positive attitude as a member of their high schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hockey program. The annual scholarship was established in memory of Bob Johnson, the Penguins late head coach who led the franchise to its first Stanley Cup Championship in 1991. Throughout his coaching career, Johnson helped thousands of high school, college and professional athletes become better people as well as outstanding students and athletes.Â Kellen Carleton was a defenseman for his high school varsity hockey team and served as captain during the 2013-14 season. continued on page 190

During his senior year, he recorded 34 points while scoring 12 goals and finished the season with a plus-16 rating. In addition to varsity hockey, Carleton played amateur hockey at the AA/AAA level throughout his junior and senior high school years with the North Pittsburgh Wildcats and served as team captain in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He also excelled in baseball with the North Hills Baseball Federation League select travel team and served as co-captain in 2010, 2011 and 2012. He captured a variety of honors throughout his high school hockey career including 2014 PIHL All Star honors; the Badger Bob Johnson Hockey Award for excellence in leadership, character and sportsmanship; Central Catholic Varsity Hockey 2014 Defensive Player Award and 2014 Playerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Player Award; and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 2014 East Stellar Six All Star Hockey Defenseman honors. Carleton also excelled academically. He was a member of the National Honor Society, My Brotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Keeper Leadership and Mentoring Program and the De La Salle Ambassador Program and served as the senior class lead for the Underclassman Tutoring Program, the Freshman Orientation Program and Senior Retreat, and the Viking Auction and the Lasallian Benefactors. He was selected for the Study and Cultural Immersion Program in Ireland in 2012 where he studied literature and the history of Ireland at the University College in Cork and University College in Dublin. Active in his community, Carleton volunteered as an instructor with the North Pittsburgh Youth Hockey Association, worked with Family House and participated in Paul Sciullo Memorial Charity events. As a high school senior, he was recognized for his many charitable works with several awards. Kellen is the son of Dennis and Anita Carleton of Sewickley, PA. He is studying at Carnegie Mellon University with a major in Public Policy/ Management and Pre-Law. Congratulations, Kellen!

GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.

RULE 24

PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.

RULE 38

VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198

referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.

RULE 57 TRIPPING

The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)

RULE 76 FACE-OFFS

To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.

RULE 64

DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. RULE 84 OVERTIME

* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.

RULE 85

PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. For Pittsburgh Penguins games, all alcohol sales within the arena will conclude at the beginning of the third period. Individual concerts and events are determined on a show-by-show basis.

ATM MACHINES For the convenience of our fans, ATMs are available in CONSOL Energy Center: First Niagara Bank - Outside section 119 and 230, and in the lobby of the Trib Total Media Gate PNC Bank on PNC Legends Level - Outside of party suite 44 and suite 13

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

AUTOMOTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AAA will have a “Puck Truck” at all Penguins home games. The “Puck Truck” is available to assist patrons that have trouble with their vehicles in CONSOL Energy Center lots only. Fans can call 1.800.AAA.HELP after the start of the third period.

BABY CHANGING STATIONS Baby changing stations are available in all restrooms, located on all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center.

In return for safe and sober transportation of their group from CONSOL Energy Center, the designated driver will receive a coupon redeemable for a complimentary soft drink during the game.

DOORS OPEN Doors generally open one (1) hour prior to the start of an event at CONSOL Energy Center, including Pittsburgh Penguins games. Please check the individual event page for further information. CONSOL Energy Center has a no re-entry policy; once you leave the building during an event, you will not be permitted to return.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

FIRST AID There are two (2) UPMC First Aid Stations, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. UPMC First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats.
