SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT

CHUCK VUKOTICH

Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Season Ticket Location: 211, K, 13-14 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 2004

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? My dad was a big fan of the old Pittsburgh Hornets, so I grew up with stories of Baz Bastien, Duquesne Gardens and all the old players. Then my son and I started attending games in 1991. Today he tells me that his fondest memories of childhood were attending those games. When my son returned to Pittsburgh after attending college in Chicago, I knew we had to start attending Penguins hockey and we’ve been going ever since. WHAT CURRENT PLAYER OR TEAM IS YOUR FAVORITE PENGUINS OPPONENT? Chicago Blackhawks — my son became a fan when he went to college in Chicago. The Hawks play a professional style of hockey. They rely on skill and talent. They always bring good solid hockey into the arena. They will always bring talent against talent and give you a great night of hockey action. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME RITUALS WHEN ATTENDING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? I wear my Crosby jersey… it doesn’t get washed. We pick a hat for the season and wear the same hat. My son has two jerseys, but will never change until they lose on a jersey. We also check in with continued on page 6

continued from page 5

family. After the first period, I call my mom (age 90) and Chaz calls his mom and wife. After the second period, I call my wife. My son checks in with his wife and his mom and then calls grandma. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO WEAR OR BRING TO PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? Shari, the hockey lamb… she is good luck for the Penguins, and when things are down, we get everyone in our section to rub her head. She does not get washed during the season, nor does she change her jersey. She has three — Malkin, Sid and Iceburgh. AS A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PROMOTIONAL GIVEAWAY AND/OR EVENT? Mike Lange talking bobblehead! DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE STORIES OR EXPERIENCES SINCE BECOMING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? This is the story I tell why hockey is the best sport — Hockey is the best sport because it gets faster and more exciting as the game goes on. Everyone skates a little harder, and a team can even pull the goalie to bring an extra attacker. Everyone knows the Lombardi Trophy, but you only get to touch it if you’re Jerome Bettis. A few people know what the World Series Trophy looks like. No one cares about the Basketball Championship Trophy. BUT, if your team wins the Stanley Cup, the Cup comes to your community. You can see it. You are ALLOWED to touch it, and if you’re really lucky, you can drink your favorite beverage from it. Chuck’s son Chaz, Shari the lamb and Chuck at Snapshots with Stanley

OVERCOMING

ADVERSITY By: Mike Prisuta

It’s probably been a while since the Penguins were seemingly as ready to turn the page on a calendar year and begin again anew as they appeared to be while making the transition from 2014 to 2015. As well as they had handled an onslaught of injuries, the mumps and just plain bad luck that had been confronting the team leading into the final days of December, all of the adversity the Penguins were repeatedly forced to deal with was beginning to have an effect on morale. That became apparent when winger Patric Hornqvist was able to play only eight shifts, a mere 6:26 of ice time in what became a 3-0 loss to Washington on Dec. 27 after being hit in the leg with a shot fired by defenseman Derrick Pouliot. “Certainly there was a little bit of a setback and I could sense that with our group when Hornqvist went out,” head coach Mike Johnston observed. “But then I thought we gathered ourselves and hung in the game.” Indeed, the Penguins hung in there well enough that it was still a 1-0 hockey game entering the third period. They did so with a lineup that included defensemen Scott Harrington and Pouliot, and forwards Andrew Ebbett, Bobby Farnham, Rob Klinkhammer, Bryan Rust and Jayson Megna, none of whom had been in the lineup when the regular season had opened on Oct. 9 against Anaheim. And they did so on a night when the team’s total of 125 mangames lost to injury in 2014-15 grew exponentially due to the continued on page 24

unavailability of forwards Craig Adams (undisclosed injury), Beau Bennett (lower body), Blake Comeau (upper body), Steve Downie (mumps), Pascal Dupuis (blood clot), Zach Sill (upper body) and Scott Wilson (leg), defensemen Christian Ehrhoff (lower body), Olli Maatta (upper body) and Paul Martin (undisclosed), and goaltender Thomas Greiss (mumps). Wilson had been injured on Dec. 2 against New Jersey, the night he made his NHL debut as an injury-necessitated call-up from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The Penguins had fought through it all well enough to emerge from that 3-0 loss to Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals with a record of 22-8-5 through their first 35 games. Pittsburgh’s 49 points trailed only Anaheim (52) and Chicago (50) in the NHL’s overall standings. “We have some young guys coming up that have energy, so that brings energy to your group right away,” Johnston observed. “And we have players on the team, unfortunately, that have been through this before and have had to handle this situation, where Sid [captain Sidney Crosby] or [defenseman Kris] Letang was out, those types of situations. “Certainly there are a lot more of them right now that we have to handle, a lot more adversity. But as we all know it’s going to make you stronger and you’ve gotta be able to deal with it.” We have some Crosby (mumps) was young guys coming up among the unavailable for a three-game stretch that have energy, so that from Dec. 12-15. brings energy to your It was nothing he hadn’t experienced group right away. previously playing on Mike Johnston a team that too often in recent seasons has been forced to make do without significant components for significant stretches. “I feel like we’ve run into this almost every year at some point,” Crosby said. “I know most teams do, maybe not to this extent but it is something everyone has to go through. experienced that way and guys have come in and done a good job, it’s not something we’ve had to talk about a lot, that’s a good thing. We’re just taking it in stride. “Guys who have come in deserve a lot of the credit. They’ve come into some pretty important roles and a lot of responsibility and they’ve done a great job with it. We just need to continue to do the same. That’s just something we’re going through and hopefully kind of get it out of the way and keep finding a way to hang in there.” One of the new guys, Klinkhammer, arrived in a trade with Arizona in early December and has been hanging in there with the rest of the Penguins ever since. “It’s a lot of adversity, that’s for sure,” he said. “Guys have done a great job sticking with it, battling, and just playing hard every game. “The leaders have led a lot of us and that’s been huge for us. We just have to follow their lead.” Added Letang: “We don’t want to find excuses.”

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

BOB GROVE

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

STEVE KOLBE

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Kolbe has over 25 years of broadcasting experience, and most recently has been a co-host of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) as well as talk show host for Major League Baseball coverage and NHL insider on CBS Radio 105.7 in Baltimore. NHL YOUTH CUP RECAP By: Joey Sykes

After finishing strong at the second annual NHL Youth Cup Tournament presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, the Penguins Elite proved why they are one of the premier youth hockey organizations not only here in Pittsburgh, but also across the country. The 2004 Penguins Elite grouping stole the show Sunday afternoon at Robert Morris University’s Island Sports Center after dominating their age grouping in the tournament. They beat Philadelphia’s Team Comcast in the finals, 8-2, to take home the championship for the second straight year. Head coach Ray Conway and assistant coach Jeff Hannan backed the team to their victory. “We’re fortunate with what we have in the coaching staff throughout the organization,” Hannan said. “We’re fortunate enough that the parents can afford to do this because it is expensive and it’s a lot of hard work that a lot of people don’t see. “It’s our second year in a row winning it, so we had some new kids this year that got to experience it for the first time, which is really neat.” Rick Boysen, father of Penguins Elite player Ryan Boysen, agrees with Hannan. “The Penguins Elite is a great organization and they develop the kids well, but they remember the fundamentals of having fun continued on page 89

87

continued from page 87

at all levels,” Boysen said. “It’s great for these kids to get together to bond as well and travel around the country.” The NHL Youth Cup featured eight AAA NHLaffiliated youth teams across six age divisions, including the Penguins Elite. Pittsburgh hosted one event for each major birth year (2000, ’02, ’04) for the tournament, while Philadelphia hosted one event from each minor birth year (2001, ’03, ’05). In addition to the Penguins Elite, the tournament played host to Team Comcast, the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, the Mid Fairfield Rangers, the Suffolk P.A.L. Islanders and the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes, as well as the Nashville Jr. Predators and Washington Little Caps, who are new to the event. “It was good,” Hannan said about the tournament. “We put a lot of hard work into it. Bringing in all these NHL clubs was great. It’s good to see the kids’ hard work pay off.” Scott Sroka, whose son Owen plays on the 2004 team, enjoyed seeing his boy have success again in this tournament and attributes their success to the coaching staff. “It’s great,” Sroka said. “We were in Philadelphia last year and we won that year and we won again this year, so it’s a great opportunity to showcase the sport and the elite level teams with the NHL Youth Cup. “The kids worked really hard this year and overcame some great obstacles and won again this year. They worked harder than ever and had great coaching.” The tournament was a big success and entertaining for all involved, and the players and their families even received a special treat after the event concluded. Lord Stanley’s Cup made an appearance in the lobby of the Island’s Sports Center, where people gathered around to snap photos with the Cup and gaze at the names of champions. “That’s really cool for them,” Hannan said. “Especially since a lot of those kids see it on T.V. and have seen the Penguins win it in the past. To see it first hand is really cool for them.”

Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”

said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. For more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

HOCKEY IS FOR

EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

DRAFT CLASS

KASPERI KAPANEN

Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.

SAM LAFFERTY

Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

ANTHONY ANGELLO

Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.

JADEN LINDO

Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

JEFF TAYLOR

Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. PROJECT

POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settler’s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS PROFILE

SIDNEY

CROSBY By: Mark Madden

Sidney Crosby often celebrates goals lustily. But when he netted Dec. 20 vs. Florida, Crosby looked skyward and bellowed even a bit more passionately. The superstar center had gone eight games without scoring. Crosby had been playing his usual superb slot-to-slot hockey. But the pucks weren’t going in. Crosby’s goal came at 7:01 of the third period, providing insurance in the host Penguins’ 3-1 win over Florida. It was Crosby’s 10th goal of the year. “It’s nice,” Crosby said after. “I’ve had some good chances in the last couple games. Ones you want to put in. Sometimes it doesn’t always happen. “To get a nice look like that and put it in felt good. Hopefully I can build off it.” Defenseman Kris Letang was the architect of Crosby’s goal. Letang took a cross-rink pass from Simon Despres, skated to the middle of the left circle and found Crosby lurking by the left post for a neat deflection. “It was a great play by Tanger,” Crosby said. “He brought guys to him, and made a great pass. So it was nice to see that one go in.” continued on page 162

161

continued from page 161

Crosby, 27, had 10 goals and 27 assists in his first 31 games. He missed three games with mumps. Injuries and the mumps epidemic left the Penguins scrambling to fill out their lineup. Literally half the team was minor-leaguers on selected evenings. But, as the New Year approached, the Penguins were starting to get back some key talent, including Crosby’s usual linemate Chris Kunitz who played in the Dec. 20 victory over Florida. “It’s definitely good to get people back,” said Crosby. “But at this point, with what we’re dealing with, you have to accept the circumstances and make the best of it. “I think we’ve handled it well. We’ve had the right mindset, and haven’t let it frustrate us. “But the more guys keep coming back, the better it feels.” Hotshot defensive prospect Derrick Pouliot made his NHL debut Dec. 20. First game, first shot, first goal. It was a magical night for Pouliot. “[Pouliot] played well,” Crosby said. “He showed a lot of poise. It didn’t take long for him to get his first goal. It’s always nice seeing that. He played really well.” The stabilizing force, as usual, was goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury made 45 saves to beat the Panthers, mixing in a fistful of incredible stops. “He was solid,” Crosby said. “They got a lot of pucks at him. They were shooting from everywhere. There were a lot of tips and a lot of traffic, and [Fleury] fought through it all night. He was a big part of our win. He kept us in the game.” Crosby had some ground to make up in the NHL scoring race. Crosby has won the Art Ross Trophy twice, including last season. But he trailed leader Jakub Voracek of Philadelphia by nine points going into the NHL’s Christmas break. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Nova Scotia native had three goals and 10 assists in his last 18 games before the holiday. Good for most. A slump for Crosby. “You look at the chances,” Crosby told NHL.com. “It’s more frustrating when the chances aren’t there, and there have been times when the chances haven’t been there. That’s frustrating. When you’re getting them, you believe and you trust that they’re going to go in.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

Mike Johnston used his first-ever draft pick as coach and general manager of the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks in 2009 to select defenseman Derrick Pouliot first overall in that year’s Bantam Draft. Pouliot spent the next several seasons playing under Johnston, who left to become head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins — the team that drafted the young defenseman eighth overall in the 2012 NHL Draft. Then on Dec. 20 against the Panthers, Pouliot took the next step in his career — making his NHL debut — under Johnston, the man who played a crucial role in his development to help get him to this point. “It’s kind of neat how that happened because he played for us at age 15 in Portland and played five years there,” Johnston said. “I had an opportunity to watch him grow as an individual, watch him grow as a player and now to be here with him for his first NHL game, it’s a unique experience for sure.”

The two of them spent a few minutes skating around chatting during the Penguins’ game-day skate heading into their matchup with the Florida Panthers that evening. “He just told me who I’d be playing with [Rob Scuderi] and to make sure I get a good rest today because of the late night,” said Pouliot, who was informed he was being recalled last night around 11 p.m. after his game with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. “Be ready. … I kind of know his system, what he wants us to do out there. We went over some stuff beforehand too so I’m pretty familiar with it, but I still have to go out there and execute.” Pouliot did just that, scoring a goal on his first-ever shot in his debut — a 3-1 Penguins win. “It’s incredible,” Pouliot said. “You dream about that moment happening, so it was very exciting to get the win and get that first goal, too.” The 20-year-old is an incredibly exciting prospect. He put together a terrific final season of junior hockey last year, as he capped off his career by being named Defenseman of the Year for the entire Canadian Hockey League — which consists of the WHL, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Pouliot, who has been compared to Kris Letang, is an offensive defenseman with incredible skating, vision and puckmoving ability that has the potential to be the team’s power-play quarterback of the future. He’s seen time on both the first and second units here in Pittsburgh. continued on page 177

At the time of his call-up, Pouliot led Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in scoring with 20 points in 23 games. He came to Pittsburgh with five goals and seven points in seven games during the month of December. But while Pouliot’s offensive game has certainly translated to this level thus far, his defensive game is a continually evolving work in progress. “Last year when I was coaching him in juniors, the Pittsburgh development coaches — Bill Guerin and Tom Fitzgerald — gave him a checklist of things and those were some of the things that they wanted him to work on,” Johnston said. “Being more assertive in his defensive zone [is something] we worked on at the junior level, but it’s a lot different at the pro level. It’s a lot different in the American league than it is at the NHL level. “And so certainly [WB/S head coach] John Hynes has commented to me and the conversations we had that he definitely has improved in that area, concentrated in that area. He’s very smart defensively. It’s a matter of learning the league and learning the players, but it is a big step.” Pouliot said WB/S assistant coach Alain Nasreddine, a former pro defenseman, has worked extensively with him in that regard. “He has has been really good with me down there, working on some stuff and making sure I’m consistent in both ends of the ice,” Pouliot said. “Physical play, boxing out, stuff like that, things that allow you to keep the puck out of your net. . . [Defense] is always something you can work on. You can never be perfect at it. Luckily it’s a teachable thing. It’s a mindset that I have to get into game in and game out. I’m still working on it for sure, but it’s definitely improved.”

ZATKOFF’S

CRAZY DAY By: Michelle Crechiolo

On the morning of Dec. 22, Jeff Zatkoff and his wife were at the post office in Wilkes-Barre — sending a Christmas gift out to his brother before they left town for the holiday break — when he realized he had a missed call from a 412 area code. “I listened to the voicemail and it was [associate general manager] Jason Botterill,” Zatkoff said. “So I called him back and I had a feeling something was up. Usually you don’t get a call from your assistant general manager.” As it turns out, goaltender Thomas Greiss wasn’t feeling well that morning and ended up flying back to Pittsburgh, meaning the Penguins needed someone to get down to Florida and back up starter Marc-Andre Fleury in that night’s game against the Panthers on incredibly short notice. So Zatkoff canceled his plans to head to New York City, instead rushing to the arena to collect his equipment and hurry to the airport to make the roughly 2.5-hour flight to Florida. “We were all packed up and had the dogs in the car, so we turned back around and just put things on hold for a few days,” Zatkoff said. “I was more worried about leaving the rink, getting my gear and getting to the airport in time. I knew I wasn’t playing, so it didn’t matter if I got into warmups or not. Once I got to the airport and sat at my gate, my heart stopped beating a little bit and I was like okay, I made it.” Zatkoff did end up missing warmups for the first time in his professional career, but made it on to the bench in time for puck drop. “It’s my seventh year, and I’ve never even had anything remotely close to this happen to me,” Zatkoff said. “It’s fun. Obviously it’s exciting to be called up, so any time you get the opportunity, you’re excited and kind of got some adrenaline and hoping you can make your flight so you can get there in time for the game.”

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta

MAKING THINGS HAPPEN: Toronto D Dion Phaneuf was on the ice for an NHL-leading 50 percent of his team’s goals (59 of 118) through the Maple Leafs’ first 35 games. Toronto led the NHL in goals per game (3.31), hits (1,142) and takeaways (383) at that juncture.

CLIMBING THE LADDER: Florida G Roberto Luongo’s 4-3 victory, which moved Luongo past Mike Vernon and into sole possession of the No. 12 spot on the NHL’s all-time wins list. Luongo moved to within three wins of tying Dominik Hasek for No. 11 on the all-time NHL list.

HOME SWEET NASHVILLE: The Predators’ 4-1 victory over the Flyers on Dec. 27 improved their home record to 13-2-1, a mark that included 12 one-goal decisions (one in overtime and four shootout victories). Nashville won seven straight home games from Nov. 11-Dec. 4.

BAD-NEWS SHOOTOUTS: The Flyers lost their first five shootouts this season, which ran their losing streak in

184

shootouts to 10 since a shootout victory on Dec. 30, 2013 at Vancouver.

BLUELINE BIG FOR BLUES: St. Louis defensemen averaged 3.10 points per game through the Blues’ first 10 games in December (7+24). That was a significant increase in production over the 1.79 points per game St. Louis defenseman had averaged in October and November (7+36 in 24 games).

GOAL ORIENTED: Dallas C Tyler Seguin led the NHL with 25 goals through the Stars’ first 33 games. Seguin became the second player in franchise history to score at least 23 goals through the first 30 games (Dino Ciccarelli, 29, in 1986-87).

A GRAND NIGHT: Colorado’s Brad Stuart became the 293rd player and the 100th defenseman in NHL history to appear in 1,000 career games when he suited up on Dec. 18 against the Penguins. Stuart followed Vincent Lecavalier, Robyn Regehr, Brad Richards and David Legwand among players who reached the milestone after having been drafted in 1998.

RULES CHANGES nhl.com

RULE 1.8

RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.

RULE 23

GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.

RULE 24

PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.

RULE 38

VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198

continued from page 197

referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.

RULE 57 TRIPPING

The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)

RULE 76 FACE-OFFS

To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.

RULE 64

DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.

RULE 85

PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.

RULE 1.9

RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
