SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT
STEVE SARRICK
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Season Ticket Location: 227, H, 13-14 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 2001
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? My wife, Cyndi, and I both grew up in Pittsburgh and can tell nearly identical stories of sitting around and cheering on the Penguins as kids. Most of my stories were with my Dad at our neighbor’s house as he had the premium cable package to watch the games. Cyndi watched with her friends enjoying the game but also commenting on what players were the hottest. When we married, it was almost an insult that nobody got us tickets for our wedding. My co-worker often would give us his tickets in 2000. At the end of the season, the seats next to him opened up. We bought those tickets and have been going ever since. WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? A majority of games are with my wife. With three kids ages seven, eight and 11, we are very busy — with hockey of course! Cyndi is a stay at home mom so Penguins games become our date night. continued on page 6
5
continued from page 5
AS A SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHERISHED PENGUINS MEMORY? I think the rush of emotions leading up to and then hearing that the Penguins were staying in Pittsburgh will always be remembered. DO YOU PLAY HOCKEY OR HAVE ANY CHILDREN THAT PLAY? Most of my kids are dek hockey players. We did something most Pittsburghers never do — we moved from the South Hills (Bethel Park) to the North Hills (Richland Township). The greatest thing was being greeted by a newspaper article shortly after our move that the Penguins sponsored the new dek rink in Richland Park. I have assisted in coaching and as a referee since its opening. This year, my little girl left gymnastics to become our third dek hockey player at the rink. We are now there five days a week. In addition, my middle son Connor was able to participate in the Little Penguins. Crosby came down to the ice after practice at Southpointe and the photo of him with my son was used in many marketing materials the following year. It was his 15 minutes of fame and fun for our family. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? Human bowling never gets old and my wife and I have a bit of a rivalry over the shuffle. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE STORIES OR EXPERIENCES SINCE BECOMING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER Steve’s children at a game posing with Iceburgh! THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? I think the two things that stand out most involved bad weather. My company had Suite 66 tickets — but not for me. Due to bad weather, some customers dropped out and I ended up with the tickets — great experience. The other bad weather was driving back from Buffalo after the first Winter Classic. It was a giant caravan of Penguins fans driving about 25 mph the entire way.

NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES [VS] RED WINGS
Tonight the Penguins and Detroit Red Wings meet for the second time this season. In Detroit on Oct. 23, Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall scored in a 2:00 span of the final 2:39 with the goaltender pulled, and then the Wings earned a 4-3 victory on Justin Abdelkader’s goal at 4:16 of overtime. . . In their last 14 games against each other, the Penguins and Wings have each won seven games. The Wings have had fewer regulation losses (three) than the Penguins (five) in those 14 games. . . Pittsburgh has points in four straight games against Detroit (2-0-2) and points in six of its last seven against the Wings (4-1-2). . . The Penguins have had a deciding edge in special teams play in the last four meetings, Pittsburgh going 5-for-16 (31.2 percent) on the power play while the Wings have been 1-for-16. . . Four of the last six games between the teams have been decided after regulation. . . The Penguins are 3-1-0 in their last four home games against Detroit, winning two of those in shootouts, but they are 4-4-1 in their last nine home games against the Wings. . . Pittsburgh has scored first in nine of its last 13 home games against Detroit. . . Six of the last 11 games between the teams, including each of the last three, were decided continued on page 10

by one goal. . . The Penguins have lost the season series against Detroit just once over the last six seasons (0-1-0 in 2011-12). . . Evgeni Malkin has three goals and six points in his last three games against the Wings — the same totals Kronwall has in his last four games against Pittsburgh. . . The teams will meet again here in Pittsburgh on March 15. . . Pittsburgh is 63-61-16-3 all-time against the Red Wings, including a 47-20-4-0 mark here at home. . . The last five times the Penguins and Wings have decided a game in overtime, Detroit has won four. . . Sidney Crosby has two goals and three points in his last four games against the Red Wings.

This is Pittsburgh’s first game back at home since completing a trip to Western Canada last week that included games in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. . . The Penguins play in Ottawa tomorrow and play in Chicago next Sunday afternoon before returning here to host Washington on Feb. 17. . . A 4-0 home loss to Nashville on Feb. 1 left the Penguins with 12 losses in their last 18 games and just 4-4-2 in their last 10 games at home. . . Simon Despres’ first career overtime goal Jan. 30 in New Jersey gave the Penguins a 2-1 victory and snapped their five-game road losing streak against the Devils. . . The Penguins were hoping that Evgeni Malkin would return from a groin injury on the trip to Western Canada. He had missed the previous five games before that trip

began. . . Chris Kunitz played his 700th career game in New Jersey, while Patric Hornqvist played his 400th game in the loss to the Predators. . . Pittsburgh was also hoping injured winger Blake Comeau could resume practicing with the team this week. He has been out since late December. . . Kris Letang, who had five assists in a 5-3 home win over Winnipeg last month, was three points off the top spot among scoring defensemen in the NHL when Pittsburgh’s road trip began. He had nine goals and 39 points in 44 games at that point, and his 15 assists in the month of January led all NHL players. . . The Penguins play only eight games over the final 21 days of February. . . After losing to Nashville, Pittsburgh had scored the first goal in only one of its last seven games. . . Pittsburgh is 12-2-3 against Atlantic Division teams this season, which includes Detroit. That was the best record of any Eastern Conference team against the Atlantic through games of Feb. 1. . . Max Lapierre, who made his home debut in the loss to Nashville, won 12 of 17 faceoffs in the Penguins’ overtime win at New Jersey on Jan. 30. . . After starting 40 of Pittsburgh’s first 50 games, Marc-Andre Fleury was on pace to play 65 games this season, two shy of his career high.

REFINEMENT, REALIZATION AND
REVELATION By: Mike Prisuta
Resumption of play following the All-Star break has been about refinement, realization and revelation for the Penguins. It’ll continue to be to a large degree until the postseason. The aspects of their game and their operation the Penguins have contemplated of late include: How to deal with trapping teams, including the New Jersey Devils: “They can’t trap if we’re playing in their end,” captain Sidney Crosby observed after a 2-1 overtime triumph on Jan. 30 in New Jersey. “We tried to move [the puck] quickly to prevent them from getting set up and then when we did get in [the offensive end] we didn’t want to throw the puck away. We played with the puck a lot and generated a lot of chances that way.” The offseason acquisitions/alterations having had the desired effect, as should the mid-season acquisition of Maxim Lapierre: “I think if you look back at the acquisitions over the summer leading into this year we’ve become a tougher team and probably a tougher team to play against in a lot of areas,” head coach Mike Johnston observed. “Certainly adding [Steve] Downie and [Blake] Comeau, you add [Simon] Despres coming in on defense more regularly, playing a harder game, [Robert] Bortuzzo [on defense]. “I believe we are a harder team to play against.” continued on page 24

Lapierre’s intent to fit in with more than just the Penguins of French-Canadian heritage: “I am friends with everybody. It doesn’t matter if you speak French, English [or] Russian. I’m here to have a good time with the boys and be part of the group. You don’t want to have any cliques; this is what makes a good team. You want everybody to be friends together and respect each other. You have to be a good teammate.” Winger David Perron emerging as a more complete player than Crosby initially anticipated: “He’s able to see a lot of plays, make a lot of little plays whether it’s through the neutral zone or in the offensive zone,” Crosby said. “I always knew he had a great shot but just his ability to kind of see the ice and make those little plays has been something that’s stood out a lot.” The root of bad faceoff nights, such as the one the Penguins experienced on Jan. 28 at Washington (32 percent): “Usually on nights like that it’s help from your wingers on draws,” Johnston said. “A lot of times we were losing those battles with our wingers or our defense on the half-boards. It’s not always just the centers.” continued on page 26

The Penguins’ inability to score a goal in their first two games against the Capitals: “If anything, I’d like to see us put some more pucks to the net and get there, get a guy in [goaltender Braden Holtby’s] face, get to the blue paint,” defenseman Rob Scuderi said. Added Crosby: “I just don’t think we’ve done enough to get to the front of the net. We’ve been a little too perimeter. You have to pay a price to go to the front of the net. We haven’t found a way to really get in there and generate second and third opportunities.” The need to occasionally scratch developing youngsters such as Beau Bennett, something the Penguins did on Jan. 30 at New Jersey: “It’s tough to score in this league, really tough,” Johnston explained. “And you have to get to the hard areas, you have to play more of an engaged game. And that’s where his offensive game can really evolve, to get into the front of the net, to engage a little bit more offensively. “That’ll be a big step in his progression. And sometimes with young guys it’s just a matter of watching a game and taking a break and saying, ‘OK, I have to take a step back. I have to look at my game. I know what the coaches want. That’s what I have to work on.’” The mental approach necessary to surviving 3-on-5 penalty kills: “You have to focus on what you’re doing,” center Brandon Sutter maintained. “You have to have a game plan and it’s about blocking shots and just kind of bearing down. You can’t be too aggressive. You have to be patient and you have to be ready to block stuff.”

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

Making a splash!
Of all the coatings, paints and stains we’ve made in our 130-year history, two colors stand out among the rest: Black and Gold. Our Pittsburgh roots run deep, and so does our commitment to giving back to the place we call home. And because we bring innovative coatings and glass products to CONSOL Energy Center, we’re proud to be a part of every game. To see what other winning color formulas we’re bringing to the surface, visit ppg.com.

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

CONSOL Energy Center IN FIFTH YEAR TO PRESENT
HMK
MORE TOP TOURS, EVENTS By: Pam Thompson
PERM
CONSOL Energy Center — now in its fifth year of hosting entertainment for every sort of audience — will present more top tours and banner sporting events in the future. The New Year will bring the Maroon 5 World Tour 2015 and the Second and Third Rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship to CONSOL Energy Center. The Pittsburgh arena’s reputation for hosting major sporting events will continue. The Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Championship will be contested in CONSOL Energy Center in 2017, the A-10 announced in September. Bernadette V. McGlade, A-10 Commissioner, says, “The opportunity to rotate our championship within the A-10 footprint is exciting. She adds that CONSOL Energy Center is a state-of-the-art venue with great fan amenities and a successful history of hosting NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship events. Commenting on the significance of having a facility like CONSOL Energy Center in the community, Craig Davis, President and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH, says: “Pittsburgh is at the top of its game when it comes to sports, and CONSOL has been the linchpin for our success in attracting national events such as USA Gymnastics P&G Championships, NCAA Men’s Frozen Four and NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Combined with Penguins games and the fact that it is a top-performing concert venue in terms of sales, this building and AEG have been invaluable in terms of providing visibility and economic impact to the Pittsburgh region. “ Davis adds, “Sports events are an ever-growing opportunity within the tourism industry. The market segment is 25 percent of our convention sales team’s bookings. Having CONSOL Energy Center is key to the arsenal of facilities we can offer when bidding on large sporting events in our region.” continued on page 76

Home of the to the types of Pittsburgh Penguins and entertainment the Pittsburgh Power, and concerts at CONSOL Energy CONSOL Energy Center Center. has annually hosted the Three Rivers Classic of men’s collegiate hockey, the second annual CCM/ USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in 2013, and the NHL Draft in 2012. In addition to sporting events, well over 300 performances took place at CONSOL Energy Center in its first four Paul McCartney years of operation. Leading the eclectic parade of entertainers performing for CONSOL Energy Center audiences, Paul McCartney, the inaugural act on August 18, 2010, sold out his first show so quickly that a second performance was added for the next night. After winning five Grammy Awards earlier this year, McCartney came back to CONSOL Energy Center in July with his universally acclaimed “Out There” tour and played for another sold-out crowd. In his most recent appearance, McCartney sang and played his way through his ambitious set list and two encores, performing some 40 songs with dedications to his wife, Nancy, his late wife, Linda, the civil rights demonstrators of the ‘60s, his dad and Ringo Starr for their birthdays that coincided with the concert, as well as John Lennon and George Harrison. There is no limit to the types of entertainment and concerts appearing on CONSOL Energy Center stages. Concerts — rock, pop, doo wop, Christian, country and more — have included One Direction, Lady Gaga, Donnie and Marie Osmond, Foo Fighters, Casting Crowns, Katy Perry, Barry Manilow, Black Keys, Carrie Underwood, Drake, the “Justins” — Bieber and Timberlake, Arcade Fire, Wiz Khalifa, Bruno Mars, Usher, Miley Cyrus, Michael Bublé, Andre Rieu, Hillsong United, Josh Groban, TobyMac, New Kids on the Block, Chris Tomlin and Celtic Woman. In addition to the legendary McCartney, music icons like Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Roger Waters, Billy Joel, Bob continued on page 79

6th annual readers’ survey named CONSOL Energy Center the best NHL arena. • It won the National “Hall of Headlines” award from Venues Today magazine. • Its Box Office was nominated for “Box Office of the Year” by the International Ticketing Association. • The Master Builders’ Association (MBA) top prize for Best New Construction in the category over $10 Million was awarded to PJ Dick Incorporated for its role as construction manager on CONSOL Energy Center. • On the environmental front, CONSOL Energy Center was a nominee for the Sustainability Award at the International Business Awards in Barcelona, Spain in 2011. • The building won the Green Power: Turn It On! Award from PennFuture. • CONSOL Energy Center was honored as the most innovative energy efficient glass project in Glass Magazine’s Crystal Achievement Awards. CONSOL Energy Center claims the most comfortable seating arrangement in the NHL — seats up to 24 inches wide, with an accompanying increase in legroom. The center also provides ADA accessibility, family restrooms and guest services locations on all seating levels, as well as 12 escalators — that’s 10 more than at the Civic Arena. In addition to entertainment and sporting events, the arena’s main floor, suites, dining facilities and common areas are used for fundraisers and countless private functions. This year, CONSOL Energy Center hosted the Hillman Cancer Center Gala for the fourth time. It is the venue for the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s annual signature fundraisers -- Skates & Plates and the Wine Tasting Gala. The venue also has hosted the Pens Foundation’s scholarship winners and students attending its Explorer Series, CONSOL Energy’s Community All-Stars recognition programs, and Check Your Heart screenings. All of these activities contribute to making CONSOL Energy Center a busy Elton John place all year round.

Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”
said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. HOCKEY IS FOR
EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

DRAFT CLASS
KASPERI KAPANEN
Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.
SAM LAFFERTY
Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

ANTHONY ANGELLO
Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.
JADEN LINDO
Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.
JEFF TAYLOR
Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. Taylor led all Union rookie blueliners in scoring with 16 points. Beyond the Numbers: Last season Jeff was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team as an 18-year-old true freshman.

PROJECT
POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settler’s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS PROFILE
PATRIC
HORNQVIST By: Mark Madden
Patric Hornqvist didn’t play for a month. But when the Swedish winger finally returned to the Penguins lineup, he didn’t look lost. Hornqvist immediately went to the blue paint, and looked very much at home. Hornqvist drove to the net to help Brandon Sutter’s tie-breaking power-play goal cross the goal line with 12:08 left, then buried an empty-netter with 28 seconds remaining to seal the deal in a 5-3 Penguins victory over visiting Winnipeg on Jan. 27. Hornqvist never touched Sutter’s centering feed that decided the game, but helped the puck enter the net by thrashing about like a hooked fish in front of Jets netminder Ondrej Pavelec once the disc arrived. The puck hit a Winnipeg skate and climbed over a distracted Pavelec for the winning tally. Driving to the net is a big part of Hornqvist’s game. He thinks it needs to be a big part of the Penguins’ game. “It’s really important to how we play,” said Hornqvist. “On [Steve] Downie’s goal, that doesn’t happen if not for [Mark Arcobello] driving hard to the net. That’s something we need to work on, and get better at.” Downie’s goal tied the game 2-2 with five seconds left in the second period. Arcobello went to the net and took a Jet with him, allowing Kris Letang to jump into space, take a pass from Downie and fire a shot. Downie netted the rebound. continued on page 162

Hornqvist had sustained a lower-body injury in his previous game, a 3-0 home loss to Washington on Dec. 27. He was glad to return to action. When asked how he felt, Hornqvist replied, “Up and down. It was a big win. That’s all that matters. It’s nice to get the first game out of the way. After missing a month, you lose a lot of details in your game. “So, you get the first one out of the way. We got a big win. Now, hopefully, things get better every game.” Hornqvist, 28, had 14 goals and 16 assists in his first 36 games this season. The 5-foot-11, 189-pounder is in his first campaign as a Penguin after coming to Pittsburgh from Nashville along with forward Nick Spaling in an off-season deal that sent winger James Neal to the Predators. Hornqvist’s empty-net goal against Winnipeg raised some eyebrows. It was a cerebral piece of work that began with defenseman Paul Martin. Martin iced the puck after seeing Hornqvist had got behind the Winnipeg defense but stayed onside. Hornqvist easily won the race to the face-off dots, negating the icing. He got the puck behind the net, came out front and stuffed it in. “I saw we got the puck under control. I cheated a little bit, and it was perfect,” Hornqvist said. “It feels good to score, obviously. Get that out of the way, too.” The No. 1 star vs. Winnipeg was defenseman Kris Letang, who assisted on all five goals to set a career high for helpers. “He was unbelievable,” Hornqvist said, smiling. “He was everywhere. He was playing forward, goal… it was fun to watch.” Hornqvist returned from injury vs. Winnipeg. Sidney Crosby returned the next night at Washington. The Penguins are slowly getting healthy. Pascal Dupuis and Olli Maatta are out for the season, but Blake Comeau and Evgeni Malkin will hopefully be back in uniform soon. “I think we have a hell of a team if we get everybody healthy and get going in the right direction,” Hornqvist said after the Penguins beat Winnipeg. “We need to play the way we did tonight. We battled. We didn’t give them much. That’s how we have to play when we have Sid, Geno and Comeau back, too.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

LAPIERRE BRINGS
ENERGY, PHYSICALITY By: Haley Sawyer
Penguins forward Maxim Lapierre hits people. On the ice, he’s vicious. A guy who can amp up a team, taking on an opponent anywhere on the playing surface with an equal opportunity mindset when it comes to physicality. Penguins head coach Mike Johnston also sees Lapierre’s size adding value in the overall landscape of the lineup. The 29-year-old stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs in at 215 pounds. “He adds a physical presence to our group and size down the middle of the ice, which I really like,” Johnston said. “You take a look at the middle of our ice with [Brandon] Sutter, [Evgeni Malkin], [Sidney Crosby] and “Lappy,” we’ve got some size down there. We’ve got some speed and guys that can handle the puck.” “He’s a big guy. He plays with energy. He plays with an edge at times,” added Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford, who acquired Lapierre from St. Louis for Marcel Goc on Jan. 27. “It seems that we’re getting into more physical games than I would have expected. He will help that group of guys that we already have, [Steve] Downie, [Zach] Sill, [Robert] Bortuzzo.” You can add playoff performer to Lapierre’s résumé as well. He has played in 75 career playoff games — totaling 144 penalty minutes — and was a part of two deep runs with the Montreal Canadiens (including beating the Penguins in 2010) and the Vancouver Canucks’ Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2011.

He brings a compete level that overshadows that of other players and is one of those guys that’s tough to play against when the going gets tough. “I just like the challenge in the playoffs,” Lapierre said. “It’s a good feeling for me. I think my game fits well there. You play the same team five to seven games, so it’s fun.” “He brings a lot of energy. He finishes his hits,” Crosby added. “All those key little details that are magnified in the playoffs.” Back in 2007 when Lapierre was with Montreal, he brought down Crosby by ramming him with the butt end of his stick, causing quite the dramatic affair. According to the St. Leonard, Québec native, it’s all in the past. “It’s just funny to me [that people keep bringing it up],” Lapierre said. “I don’t think there’s even a story to that.” Early after his arrival, Lapierre suggested breaking bread to break even. “I guess if you guys keep talking about that I’m going to have to,” he said with a laugh. “We’re teammates now and I’m happy to be part of the group.” His physicality, prowess in the dot and ability to chip in 9-10 goals from the fourth line will be an asset to the team and isn’t overlooked by anyone. “He’s a physical guy. He’s good in faceoffs. He’s a good checker,” Crosby said. “We’ve seen him play that role for a long time. He’s a guy that will bring that edge and add to the intensity of our game.” All of Lapierre’s positive attributes have softened the impact of being tossed into a new team. Although it’s something he’s gone continued on page 177

through a few times before, whether it was moving from Montreal to Vancouver or Vancouver to St. Louis. “It’s always a different feeling to be with a new team,” he said. “I think [against New Jersey on Jan. 30] I played better than the first night [against Washington on Jan. 28] and I’m getting used to the new system. It’s a great group of guys here and I think I’ll fit well.” Integrating into a new team and buying into a system is one thing, but picking up a young family and moving halfway up the east coast is another. Lapierre had to start packing up his things and head to the airport immediately after learning about the trade while having dinner the night of Jan. 27, leaving behind his wife Natasha and one-year-old daughter, Milya. “It’s tough,” Lapierre said. “It must be tougher for my wife right now. She’s packing everything and I’m here playing hockey, doing what I love. “I can’t wait for them to come in town and show them the city.” When everything is settled and in place, on the ice and off, Lapierre is poised to make his time in the Steel City his biggest hit yet.

VS PENGUINS’ SUPER BOWL PREDICTIONS:
WHO GUESSED RIGHT? The New England Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks, 28-24, in Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1. A few Penguins players made predictions heading into the big game. Who was right?
SIDNEY CROSBY “That’s tough. They’re both really good teams. Seattle had a tougher time getting there. They’re tested. I’m going to go with them.” MARC-ANDRE FLEURY “Since the Steelers are not there I’m going to pick Seattle because of the way they won the last game. They were down by a lot and they kept playing hard and came back in the game and found a way to win. I will go with them to find a way to win again.”
KRIS LETANG “Going by last year and what they did last game I’ll pick Seattle. Close game.” PAUL MARTIN “It’s going to be tough. I think Seattle’s going to win. I think it matches up well for them and their defense. It’ll be close.”
BEAU BENNETT “I’m just here so I don’t get fined. I’ll go New England. It’s going to come down to a late-game field goal.”
CHRIS KUNITZ “It’s a real close match. I think New England will take it. I think it’s going to be a three-point game. A really tight game.”
BRANDON SUTTER “I think the Patriots for sure. I hate to say it, but LeGarrette Blount’s going to have a big day on the ground.”
ROB SCUDERI “I’m hoping it’s a tie. I guess I’ll go with Seattle by a field goal. Defense usually wins.” DAVID PERRON “What are the experts saying about the score? I’ll go with 24-17 with the Patriots winning.”

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta
FRANCHISE TRADITION: Canadiens G Carey Price joined some exclusive Montreal company with his 1-0 victory over the Rangers on Jan. 29. The shutout was Price’s sixth over the Rangers and in recording it he became the fifth goaltender in Canadiens’ history to blank the Rangers at least five times, along with Jacques Plante (nine), Bill Durnan (six), George Hainsworth (six) and Charlie Hodge (six).
THEY LOVE FEBRUARY: The Coyotes had gone 32-14-5 (.676) in February under head coach Dave Tippett prior to this season.
THEY LOVED JANUARY: The Blues went an NHL-best 9-1-1 in January. C David Backes and LW Alexander Steen led the charge by tying for the league lead in points for the month (17 each).
FRONT RUNNERS: The Capitals’ 25-14-10 record through 49 games included a 24-1-4 mark when scoring first, the most wins in the NHL when getting
184
the first goal at that juncture. Washington went 15-1-2 when leading after the first period and 22-1-3 when ahead after 40 minutes through its first 49 games.
EARLY RETURN: Minnesota G Devan Dubnyk began paying dividends immediately upon being acquired from Arizona for a 2015 third-round pick on Jan. 14. Dubnyk became the first goalie in Wild history to earn a shutout in his first game with the team on Jan. 15 (7-0 at Buffalo) and went on to post a 4-1-0 record with a 1.66 goals-against average and a.931 save percentage while stopping 122 of the first 131 shots he faced while playing for Minnesota.
POWERFUL PAVELSKI: Sharks Joe Pavelski moved into a tie for first place in the NHL in powerplay goals this season with his 13th on Jan. 29 against Anaheim. At that juncture only Washington’s Alex Ovechkin (73) and Steven Stamkos (56) had scored more manadvantage goals than Pavelski (53) since 2010-11.

PENGUINS FANS DONATE
DIAPERS TO HELP BABIES IN NEED The Pittsburgh Penguins and Giant Eagle were proud to team up once again to host a second annual Diaper Drive for the benefit of the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank. The Diaper Drive took place before the Penguins battled the Nashville Predators on Sunday, February 1. Fans were invited to help bridge the “diaper gap” — a lack of a sufficient supply of disposable diapers to ensure babies remain clean, dry and healthy — by providing diapers for babies of families who are most in need. One in three families in America struggle to afford diapers for their children and not all social assistance programs for low-income families cover the cost of diapers. Babies need between 6-10 diapers each day and an adequate supply of diapers can cost more than $100 each month per baby for families that are already struggling. Without a clean diaper available, some babies can spend a day or longer in one diaper, leading to potential health and abuse risks. Penguins fans showed their support of the cause with an outpouring of donations as more than 9,500 diapers and $1,770 were accepted by the Pittsburgh Penguins Wives Association and continued on page 190

Penguins Booster Club members at CONSOL Energy Center. In the past two years, Penguins fans and donations from Giant Eagle have allowed the Penguins organization to donate more than 27,500 diapers and $4,000 to the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank. The Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank could not have been more pleased with the response from Penguins fans for the Diaper Drive sponsored by Giant Eagle. “The Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank is so grateful to Penguins fans and the entire Penguins organization — players, their wives and the Penguins Foundation — for supporting babies in need though the Diaper Drive sponsored by Giant Eagle. The Penguins broad fan base helps us spread awareness of the diaper crisis to the region, the nation, even internationally,” said Pastor Phillip Battle, Jr., founder and president of the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank. “ In 2014, the Diaper Bank distributed 50,000 free diapers through 19 local agencies. Our vision is to reach more and more counties in western Pennsylvania.” We would like to thank all Penguins fans who donated to this wonderful cause, our valued partner Giant Eagle, the Penguins Wives Association and the Penguins Booster Club. With your assistance, the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank will be able to help the youngest and most vulnerable members of our community — our children — receive the help they greatly need.

RULES CHANGES nhl.com
RULE 1.8
RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.
RULE 23
GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.
RULE 24
PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.
RULE 38
VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198
197
continued from page 197
referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.
RULE 57 TRIPPING
The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)
RULE 76 FACE-OFFS
To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.
RULE 64
DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME
* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.
RULE 85
PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.
RULE 1.9
RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
