THE SERIES vs. PREDATORS Tonight the Penguins and Nashville Predators meet for the first time since their Stanley Cup Final series last spring, won in six games by Pittsburgh. They will play in Nashville on Nov. 11. . . The Penguins have won eight of the last 10 regular season games against the Predators, but the teams split their series last season. The Predators claimed a 5-1 home victory on Oct. 22 as Viktor Arvidsson had two goals and Juuse Saros made 34 saves, while
the Penguins answered with a 4-2 home win on Jan. 31 thanks to two goals from former Predator Patric Hornqvist and 37 saves from Matt Murray. . . The teams have played 25 regular season games, and Pittsburgh has a 12-10-1 record with two ties. . . Pittsburgh has won four of its last five home games against Nashville in the regular season, the only loss coming Feb. 1, 2015 by a 4-0 score. . . Nashville has scored first in seven of its 11 regular season games here. . . With whom do you attend Penguins home games? I attend games with a variety of people. My brother or sister, a cousin or an uncle. Plus, my nephew is now old enough to go to games, so I look forward to attending with him as well.
What is your earliest memory of Pittsburgh Penguins hockey? I remember watching the game clincher for the Cup in ‘91 at my aunt and uncle’s house and banging pots and pans outside after the game was over.
What motivated you to purchase Penguins season tickets? Sidney Crosby. I called for tickets a day or two after we drafted Sid. I started with a 20 game plan in level C and after two years, switched to a full season in level F. Now I am starting my 13th year as a season ticket holder. Definitely a great spur of the moment decision!
What is your all-time favorite in-game entertainment feature? The little kids playing a quick game during intermission. How would you describe your game watching style? For regular season games, I stay pretty calm. I definitely jump out of my seat when the Penguins score. If something goes continued on page 20

wrong, I don’t scream or yell, I shake my head and watch as play continues or watch for play to start up again. For the playoffs, it is a bit more stressful, and I’m often sitting on the edge of my seat. Becky with her sister Valerie, mom Patty and brother Dan
Offense or Defense? Offense — I like watching the play unfold, and I’m amazed when the puck finds the littlest of areas to cross the line for a goal. Blowout or Nail biter? It would depend on who the opponent is. A heated rival team — I love a blowout. Score early and often. What Penguins related story do you retell most often? The first hockey game I attended was a last minute thing. My dad received two tickets, dropped my cousin Mike and I off at the arena, and went back to work. He met us after the game under the electronic billboard. Mario Lemieux scored 5 goals in the game against Wayne Gretzky and the St. Louis Blues and the Penguins won 8-4. Not too shabby for my first hockey game! Have you attended a Penguins away game? Do you have a favorite memory from your trip? Yes! As an early Christmas gift in 2010, I bought my brother and sister tickets to a game in Columbus. We went with a few cousins and I think there were eight of us in

If you could host Three Penguins players for dinner, past or present, who would you invite? Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby and while he wasn’t a player, I’d have to say Badger Bob Johnson. How did you celebrate the Penguins most recent Stanley Cup victory? I went out to buy newspapers the following morning at 6:00 AM to make sure I could keep a few as mementos. I watched the parade from a lower floor of our office building.

Dave Strader THE PRICE YOU PAY: Coach’s challenges have become more challenging this season. Thanks to an alteration to the Coach’s Challenge Rule (Rule 78.7) approved in late September by the NHL’s Board of Governors, a two-minute minor penalty is being assessed this season for unsuccessful coach’s challenges. The penalty for unsuccessful offside challenges replaces the loss of a team’s timeout, which had been in place since the implementation of coach’s challenges in 2015. “I’m sure there’s opinions on both sides,” Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said. “Personally, the way I viewed it was the intent of the rule was to try to get the call right. It seems to me like adding a punitive measure to a challenge is trying to discourage a challenge and not necessarily to get the call right. “If the league wants less challenges, that’s exactly what’s
going to happen because if anything’s close I’m not sure coaches are going to run the risk. For me it was more about the intent of the rule to get the call right. But I also understand that part of the league’s responsibility is trying to make the game as efficient as it can be. Maybe there were a few too many challenges and they’re trying to keep the game moving.”
REMEMBERING A LEGEND: Commissioner Gary Bettman celebrated broadcaster Dave Strader’s calls for combining “expertise, passion for our sport, the ultimate in professionalism and a calm command of the story of the moment,” upon the occasion of Strader’s passing on Oct. 1. Strader, 62, had been battling cancer for over a year. Strader called games for Detroit, Arizona, Florida and Dallas, as well as nationally for NBC, and worked three Olympic Games in a career that culminated with his receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award from the Hockey Hall of Fame in April.

MARIO
LEMIEUX LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux is known as one of the greatest players in NHL history, with two Stanley Cups, six league scoring titles, three MVP awards, two Conn Smythe Trophies, a Calder Trophy, a Masterton Trophy — and an Olympic gold medal for good measure. Now, he’s also established himself as one of the league’s greatest owners. Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle led the Penguins to another championship in 2016-17, their third in nine years, giving Mario more Cups as an owner than he won as a player. His transition from excellence on the ice to excellence in the front office – with five Cups in all – has been another remarkable achievement in a truly unprecedented pro sports career. “I don’t know that there’s another individual who’s had the impact on a franchise that Mario has had on the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, the Penguins’ president and CEO. “He saved the team as a player and led it to two Stanley Cups. He bought the team out of bankruptcy, led the effort for a new arena and delivered three more Cups. And that doesn’t even touch on what he’s done for the city as a philanthropist with the Mario Lemieux Foundation. He is one of a kind.” Lemieux and Burkle organized a group of investors that bought the Penguins out of bankruptcy in 1999. The combination of Lemieux’s hockey acumen and Burkle’s business savvy made them a formidable
front office tandem and led to a series of spectacular achievements both on and off the ice. The Penguins, during that time, have become one of the premier franchises in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning team on the ice. That includes qualifying for the playoffs for 11 straight seasons — the longest streak in hockey — and reaching the Cup Final four times and the Conference Finals five times in the past 10 years. As a player, “Le Magnifique” was a gifted 6-foot-4 centerman who dominated play for parts of three decades. Although he faced a numbing series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease, he retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player for the first time in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September 1999 and then returned to the ice on December 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. He also captained Team Canada to an Olympic gold medal in 2002. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation, which has raised more than $25 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org.

RON
BURKLE BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, hospitality, technology and distribution industries, is also now a three-time Stanley Cup champion as co-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Burkle teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership duos in professional sports, winning three Cups in the past nine seasons, including rare backto-back championships in 2016 and 2017. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many nationallevel events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. But he also helped create a winning mindset for the Penguins organization both on and off the ice. Although Burkle prefers to operate quietly and behind the scenes, Lemieux understands his immense role in the team’s success. “Ron is one of the main reasons we still have hockey in Pittsburgh,” Lemieux told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “If I was not able to buy the Penguins and have Ron as our top investor, I don’t think the Penguins would be here today. He’s a great guy and a very smart businessman. He loves Pittsburgh, he loves the Penguins. I think people should know that.”
Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for 10-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 11 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals five times in the past 10 years, in addition to the three Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

DAVID
MOREHOUSE MOREHOUSE PERM AD CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
In 10 seasons as a senior executive with the Penguins, David Morehouse has seen the team win three Stanley Cups, make the Cup finals four times and reach the conference finals five times. Though his expertise is on the team’s business side — especially branding and marketing — Morehouse’s greatest achievement has been creating a corporate culture that has driven the Penguins to consistent excellence both on and off the ice. “It’s no coincidence that we’ve enjoyed this kind of success with David Morehouse as our key senior executive” said co-owner Ron Burkle. “We’ve obviously made a lot of great acquisitions on the player side, but one of the best acquisitions we’ve ever made was David himself.” The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during Morehouse’s tenure — selling out every game for 10-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. He joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the team’s new arena was opening in August 2010.
36
Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is a native of the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Beechview.

JIM
RUTHERFORD RUTHERFORD PERM AD EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Rutherford enters his fourth season with the Penguins as the executive vice president and general manager of the NHL’s first backto-back championship team in almost two decades. Pittsburgh’s six-game defeat of the Nashville Predators in the 2017 Stanley Cup Final not only gave the Penguins a second-straight Cup victory, but it made Rutherford just the seventh GM since the 1967 NHL Expansion to win three Stanley Cups. One year earlier, Rutherford became the first GM since ‘67 to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. As a reward for his quick, on-thefly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Pittsburgh’s roster didn’t require as much tinkering in 2016-17, but Rutherford once again added key pieces at the right time, including bolstering his defense by trading for veteran Ron Hainsey near the deadline. Hainsey earned top-pair minutes in the absence of Kris Letang. Rutherford spent 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he
38
was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/ GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 23 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft.

BILL
GUERIN GUERIN
ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER Bill Guerin begins his fourth season as assistant general manager fresh off of helping the Penguins capture a second-straight Stanley Cup championship, the fourth Stanley Cup win of his career, and his second as an executive. This season, Guerin’s duties will change slightly, as one of his primary roles will be to serve as the general manager of the Penguins’ minor-league affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins, where he will oversee that team’s staff and also serve as the alternate governor at AHL league meetings. Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects,
including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the Pens’ back-to-back championship runs. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.
JASON
KARMANOS ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER
KARMANOS
Jason Karmanos begins his first season as the Penguins’ assistant general manager after receiving a promotion over the summer. Karmanos spent his first three seasons in the Pittsburgh organization as the team’s vice president of hockey operations. As assistant GM, Karmanos will continue to be involved in all facets of hockey operations decision-making, but he will also oversee the Penguins’ amateur scouting staff. Karmanos is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, having also helped build the Carolina Hurricanes’ 2006 championship club in addition to his consecutive titles in Pittsburgh. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various
roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Jim Rutherford. In addition to winning a Cup together in ’06, Rutherford and Karmanos also built the Hurricanes squad that was a Cup finalist in 2002. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury.

MIKE
SULLIVAN SULLIVAN HEAD COACH
Mike Sullivan made history in his first two seasons behind the Penguins’ bench, winning the Stanley Cup both years. By doing so, Sullivan became the first Americanborn coach in NHL history to win multiple Cups, and he joined the legendary Toe Blake of the Montreal Canadiens as the only coaches to win the championship in each of their first two seasons with a team. By winning a second Cup, Sullivan joined the Steelers’ Chuck Noll (four Super Bowls) and the Pirates’ Danny Murtaugh (two World Series) as the only coaches in Pittsburgh’s professional sports history with multiple titles. Despite the burden of being the defending champs, Sullivan’s club finished the 2016-17 regular season with 50 wins and 111 points — the latter the second-most in the history of the franchise — good enough for the second-best record in the entire league. In the playoffs, Sullivan navigated the Penguins to a secondconsecutive title despite missing top blueliner Kris Letang for the duration of the postseason. Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the second-best record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup.
Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks’ player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship.

GONCHAR GONCHAR ASSISTANT COACH
Sergei Gonchar enters his first season behind the bench as an assistant coach after spending his first two seasons in the Penguins organization as the club’s defensemen development coach. Gonchar earned plenty of praise from the Penguins’ defensemen in his previous role as defenesemen development coach. He did some of his best teaching with Justin Schultz, who finshed 2016-17 as one of the NHL’s highest-scoring blueliners. One of the top power-play quarterbacks of his era, Gonchar produced 811 career
points in 20 NHL seasons, the most of any Russian-born defenseman. He ranks in the top-20 all-time among NHL defensemen in both games played and points. During his five-year run in Pittsburgh from 2005-10, Gonchar tallied 259 points (54G-205A). Gonchar is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, winning all three crowns with Pittsburgh. He was an alternate captain on the Penguins’ ’09 team, and an executive in 2016 and ’17. Gonchar also helped the Penguins’ advance to the Cup Final in 2008.
JACQUES
MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH
Jacques Martin presided over a defensive group that overcame numerous injury woes to help the Penguins capture a second-straight Stanley Cup in 2017, the second championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. One of the most respected coaches in NHL history, Martin performed some of his best work in the 2017 playoffs, as Pittsburgh had to spread its minutes out evenly on the back end with All-Star blueliner Kris Letang sidelined for the duration of the postseason. Martin, who will be entering his fifth season with the Pittsburgh organization in 2017-18, has over 25 years of NHL
experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

RECCHI RECCHI PERM AD ASSISTANT COACH
Mark Recchi moves behind the Penguins’ bench as an assistant coach after spending the previous three seasons as the team’s player development coach. As player development coach, Recchi worked with Pittsburgh’s prospects throughout the organization from WilkesBarre/Scranton to the junior and college ranks. Two of the players Recchi worked with at WB/S, Jake Guentzel and Carter Rowney, played huge roles in Pittsburgh’s 2017 title run. Recchi enjoyed a 22-year NHL playing career that began with the Penguins in
1988-89 and wrapped up with the Boston Bruins in 2010-11. In that span, Recchi accumulated 577 goals and 1,533 points in 1,652 contests, numbers that earned him enshrinement in the Hockey Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2017. A seven-time NHL All-Star, Recchi won three Stanley Cup championships as a player: 1991 with Pittsburgh; 2006 as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes; and 2011 with Boston. He added his name to the Cup two more times as a Penguins executive in 2016 and ’17.

Mike Buckley enters his first season as the Penguins goaltending coach after spending the previous four seasons as Pittsburgh’s goaltending development coach. Buckley played a crucial role in Pittsburgh’s back-to-back Stanley Cup championship runs, serving as an eye in the sky and traveling with the club both years. His finest work thus far has been guiding the development of Matt Murray from top prospect to the first goalie in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup-clinching game twice as a rookie. Before Murray became a star at the NHL level, Buckley worked with him as a
46
first-year pro in 2014-15, when Murray was the AHL’s Rookie of the Year and Goaltender of the Year. In Buckley’s four seasons as goaltending development coach, the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins finished with the lowest goals-against average in the league three times. Following a four-year college career at UMass-Amherst that ended in 2000, Buckley played five seasons of professional hockey from 2000-05, including parts of three campaigns with the Mississippi Sea Wolves and Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL.

Since September 2014, over 42,000 students in hundreds of Pennsylvania schools have participated in the Pittsburgh Penguins Future Goals – Hockey Scholar™ program. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students with an opportunity to understand abstract science and math concepts by connecting them with hockey. The course immerses students in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. This program is available at no-cost to all local schools thanks to the partnership between the NHL, the NHLPA and the Pittsburgh Penguins. In this program, students explore topics such as rate and ratios, states of matter, force and energy, while also learning about different careers within the sport that utilize STEM. HAGELIN FEELING HEALTHY, RESTED AND
READY
BY: JEFF CARPENTER
For Carl Hagelin, this past summer was the most monumental of his life. Between winning the Stanley Cup in back-to-back years, to his day with the Cup – spent amongst friends and visiting his local arena in Stockholm – to getting married, it was truly memorable. “It was a good summer,” Hagelin said. “I got a lot of energy from it and I’m looking forward to a good season here.” It was also a short summer, which is nothing new for the Swedish forward. Since coming into the NHL in 2011, no player has amassed more playoff games than Hagelin’s 112 in the past six seasons. Hagelin missed 21 games last season, along with a handful in the playoffs, after battling injuries that included a concussion and a broken fibula sustained from blocking a shot. Usually when there’s a short summer, players need to revamp their summer training schedule in order to give themselves enough time to recover
after a grueling season. That wasn’t the case for Hagelin. “I think this year, because I missed so many games at the end, I felt pretty fresh in terms of physically and mentally,” Hagelin said. “Right at the end there I started feeling good in my leg, and was able to do the things I wanted to. This summer I probably did some more stuff than I have been able to do in the last couple summers because of long seasons and injuries, but this summer I was able to do stuff right away, which is why I feel pretty good right now.”
“It was a good summer. I got a lot of energy from it and I’m looking forward to a good season here.” CARL HAGELIN continued on page 87

Hagelin appeared in the last four games of the Stanley Cup Final versus the Nashville Predators, scoring an empty-net goal in the Penguins’ Cup-clinching 2-0 victory in Game 6. His second goal of the playoffs was a nice finishing touch on the year, ramping up Hagelin’s excitement for the new season. One of Hagelin’s most valuable contributions for the Penguins this season will be as a member of the penalty kill. A vital component of the shorthanded unit, Hagelin’s speed and defensive conscious illustrates his effectiveness when down a man. “He’s been one of our core penalty killers since he got here,” head coach Mike Sullivan said.
Last season, the Penguins’ penalty kill finished 20th in the NHL, operating at 79.8 percent. One of the reasons for the middle-of-the-pack finish can be attributed to a litany of injuries sustained on the blue line throughout last season. However, there’s also some unknown on the penalty kill heading into this season up front. Hagelin finished third on the Penguins last year with 137:58 minutes of shorthanded ice time. The Penguins return just two of their top-six penalty killers from 2016-17, as Nick Bonino (183:15), Matt Cullen (167:40), Eric Fehr (93:24) and Chris Kunitz (51:48) are all gone. continued on page 91

Tom Kuhnhackl’s 101:34 minutes were fourth on the team. Hagelin and Kuhnhackl should help anchor a unit that will incorporate centers Greg McKegg and Carter Rowney into the fold, with time from Bryan Rust, Scott Wilson, and Ryan Reaves as well. Hagelin, a sensational skater, has ground-breaking speed and strong defensive awareness. The 5-foot-11, 186-pound winger won the Fastest Skater event in the 2012 Skills Competition, and the CCHA Defensive Forward of the Year in 2010-11 as a captain for the University of Michigan. While he might not bring as much offense on the penalty kill, Hagelin’s speed has other ramifications for the opposition. It keeps them on their toes defensively, having to make quicker plays with the puck and not settle into cohesive play. Hagelin’s ability to burst up the ice can also lead to personnel
“What I like about Hagelin is he brings that same game regardless of who he plays with.”
adjustments, such as having to employ the traditional twodefenseman look on the blue line, rather than include an extra forward on the point with the manadvantage. “When you’re playing with someone with so much speed, they create a lot of opportunities,” Phil Kessel said. “Because they’re always in the opponents’ face and don’t give them a lot of time.” Hagelin spent time on the second and third line in the preseason, paired with Evgeni Malkin and Kessel or McKegg and Rust. Looking forward to this season, one thing is for sure – Hagelin will bring the same dependable play to whichever line he’s on. “What I like about Hagelin is he brings that same game regardless of who he plays with,” Sullivan said. “He brings that element of speed, puck pursuit, forces turnovers, and is a responsible player. He’s a really good two-way player that brings a defensive conscious to any line he plays on.

OUR GOAL? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen with these important reminders: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stop inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea!
2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
PPG Paints Arena is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

MIKE
LANGE LANGE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 43rd season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and
TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL
BOURQUE BOURQUE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 15th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and
1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for WPXI-TV’s coverage of Penguins hockey.

BONINO! BONINO!
BONINO!
BY: JASON SEIDLING
The morning of July 28, 2015 started off like many others in an NHL front office during the dead of summer. Those of us at the bottom of the Penguins’ communications department were excited because our bosses were off, which meant an early afternoon dismissal. But the big boss — general manager Jim Rutherford — had other ideas. Late that morning, Rutherford swung a trade with the Vancouver Canucks, acquiring Nick Bonino and Adam Clendening for Brandon Sutter, and at the same time he signed free agent Eric Fehr. As we diligently prepared press
releases to announce the moves, we took a moment to ask ourselves, what did we know about Nick Bonino before we looked up his career stats? The only thing we could come up with was how well we had watched him play for the Anaheim Ducks in the playoffs, and, of course, his really cool beard. Two seasons, and two Stanley Cup championships later, I’d say that initial scouting report on Bonino proved to be right on the money. Tonight, Bonino returns to PPG Paints Arena for the first time since joining the Nashville Predators as a free agent on July 1. While he will continued on page 136

quickly become the enemy once the puck drops, we get the first chance this season to celebrate a central figure to the Penguins’ back-to-back championships who has moved on to new pastures. As someone who played defense growing up, and blocked his fair share of shots, I can’t help but still cringe as the replay unfolds in my memory. Pittsburgh was killing a penalty midway through the first period of Game 2 in last year’s Stanley Cup Final. Nashville’s P.K. Subban drew his stick back and prepared to unleash a slap shot towards the Penguins’ net. Without hesitation, standing a mere feet in front of Subban, Bonino selflessly flung his body in front of the oncoming shot, taking the puck in one of the worst places possible — the foot. Nobody knew for sure at the time, but that Subban shot instantly broke Bonino’s foot. Being a hockey player, Bonino managed to regain his footing and two more times, put his body in Subban’s shooting lane, before Bonino collapsed to the ice at the next whistle. As his teammates carried him down the runway, you could only assume Bonino’s season was over. Except, it wasn’t quite yet. Bonino received treatment, then returned for the final two periods, helping the Penguins take a 2-0
series lead. He would try multiple times in the ensuing games to keep playing through the injury, but the pain prevented that from happening. While the image of Bonino blocking Subban’s shot might not live in fans’ memories like some of his other highlights, it’s symbolic of Bonino’s tenure in Pittsburgh. When the spotlight shined the brightest, Bonino was there when his teammates needed him the most, willing to do whatever it took to win. For those of us lucky enough to enjoy a daily behind-the-scenes experience with the club, we know how much Bonino was valued inside the dressing room. One of the funniest players to wear the black and gold, he wasn’t shy about busting the chops of his fellow stars, something that endeared himself to the group. Bonino, as down-to-earth as they come, was always one of the first players to step up to attend charitable events. And who can forget how Bonino treated us all to hilarious social media postings of his daughter, Maisie, and dog, Kali. No matter how many goals Bonino scored, or how many people he touched off the ice, his lasting legacy in Pittsburgh will always revert back to May 10, 2016. That night the Penguins squandered a 3-0 lead and seemed on their way to having to play the rival Washington Capitals in a Game 7 continued on page 139

back at the Verizon Center. Overtime loomed at PPG Paints Arena, and the Caps held all the momentum. Fortunately for Penguins fans, Bonino was Johnny-on-the-spot, in the right place at the right time. Bonino cue-balled a Carl Hagelin rebound along the ice behind Washington’s Braden Holtby, capping a wild, 4-3 Pittsburgh win that completed a 4-2 series victory. And of course, the Bonino legend only grew from there once the famed Harnarayan Singh “Bonino! Bonino! Bonino!” goal call from the Hockey Night in Canada Punjabi feed spread through the Twittersphere.
Bonino’s goal was a fitting end to that series, one where his ‘HBK Line’ with Hagelin and Phil Kessel dominated offensively, leading to the trio becoming folk heroes across Pittsburgh, complete with their own signature sandwich at Primanti Brothers. Over the next year following that goal, Bonino contributed plenty more clutch tallies to the championship cause, but for Penguins fans, when the name Nick Bonino comes up, the accompanying image will always be his goal against the Caps.

We believe every leader of the sport has the responsibility to inspire stakeholders in an effort to deliver a positive family hockey experience. Hockey participation offers families value beyond making an individual a better player or even a better athlete. The game of hockey is a powerful platform for participants to build character, foster positive values and develop important life skills. These benefits are available to all players, desirable to every family and transcend the game. Today, guided by our common values, we jointly pledge to the following Principles.
WE BELIEVE: • Hockey should be an enjoyable family experience; all stakeholders — organizations, players, parents, siblings, coaches, referees, volunteers and rink operators — play a role in this effort. • Hockey’s greatest value is the role it plays in the development of character and life skills. • All hockey organizations — regardless of size or level of competition — bring value to players and families in their ability to deliver a positive family experience. • Physical activity is important for a healthy body, mind and spirit. • There are significant benefits of youth participation in multiple sports. • Hockey programs should be age-appropriate for all players, accounting for each individual’s physical, emotional and cognitive development. • There is great value in all forms of hockey, both on and off the ice. • All hockey programs should provide a safe, positive and inclusive environment for players and families regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. Simply put, hockey is for everyone. We believe in our ability to improve lives and strengthen communities globally through hockey. We believe that living by these Principles will provide a healthy, balanced and enjoyable experience for all and inspire impactful service beyond the rink.

LOOKING
BACK:
2017 STANLEY CUP FINAL
BY: MIKE PRISUTA They’re looking ahead, not behind. They’re stalking the next championship, not still celebrating their most recent achievement. The new season has begun, it’s off and running. And for the Penguins it’s all about, as head coach Mike Sullivan loves to acknowledge, “moving forward.”
144
But with the Nashville Predators visiting PPG Paints Arena tonight a little reminiscing right about now feels appropriate. It’s also a difficult temptation to resist. So with that in mind, here’s one last look back at the 2017 Stanley Cup Final.
GAME 1 PENGUINS 5, PREDATORS 3
MAY 29, PPG PAINTS ARENA
The Penguins struck for two goals in a span of 1:05 late in the first period (Evgeni Malkin on the power play at 15:32 and Conor Sheary at 16:37) on the way to building a 3-0 lead prior to the first intermission. Rather than come unglued, the Predators dug in and battled back.
Frederick Gaudreau’s first of the playoffs at 13:29 of the third brought Nashville all the way back at 3-3. But Jake Guentzel struck for the eventual game-winning goal at 16:43 and Nick Bonino provided the exclamation point with his second of the night, this one into an empty net.
GAME 2 PENGUINS 4, PREDATORS 1
MAY 31, PPG PAINTS ARENA
Nashville achieved its first lead of the series on Pontus Aberg’s goal at 12:57 of the first but Guentzel countered at 16:36. The puck dropped for the third with the game still tied at 1-1,
but Guentzel untied it quickly (10 seconds in) and the Penguins responded with two more before the period was five minutes old (Scott Wilson at 3:13 and Malkin at 3:28) to assume control.
GAME 3 PREDATORS 5, PENGUINS 1
JUNE 3, BRIDGESTONE ARENA
Guentzel got the Penguins off to a fast start with his 13th of the playoffs and fourth of the series at 2:46, a lead the Penguins carried into the second period. But Roman Josi scored on the power play early in the second
period and suddenly Nashville was off and running. Gaudreau found the net a mere 42 seconds after Josi for what turned out to be the second of five unanswered goals by the home team.
GAME 4 PREDATORS 4, PENGUINS 1
JUNE 5, BRIDGESTONE ARENA
The teams traded goals just over a minute apart late in the first period — Calle Jarnkrok for Nashville at 14:51 and Sidney Crosby for the Penguins at 15:57 — and went to the intermission tied at 1-1. It was all Predators after that.
Gaudreau, Viktor Arvidsson and Filip Forsberg scored in succession as Nashville evened the series with a pair of home-ice triumphs during which it outscored the Penguins by a combined 9-2.

GAME 5 PENGUINS 6, PREDATORS 0
JUNE 8, PPG PAINTS ARENA
The Penguins wasted little time re-establishing control. Justin Schultz opened the scoring at 1:31 of the first period on the power play. Bryan Rust added a goal at 6:43 and Malkin delivered a staggering blow with a third Penguins goal, this one coming just 11 seconds before the break. Sheary, Phil Kessel and Ron Hainsey got into the scoring act in
the second period and the Penguins cruised home from there. Matt Murray stopped all 24 shots the Predators threw onto his net in registering the shutout that reclaimed the series lead for the Penguins and advanced them to within one game of a second consecutive Stanley Cup championship.
GAME 6 PENGUINS 2, PREDATORS 0
JUNE 11, BRIDGESTONE ARENA
The Predators fought desperately to stave off elimination and the Penguins did the same in an effort to close out the series. The game remained scoreless until Patric Hornqvist found a way to nudge a puck past Pekka Rinne at 18:25 of the third. Carl Hagelin’s empty-netter at 19:46 cued the celebration.
“It’s hard to express it in words, how proud we are of this group of players,” Sullivan acknowledged. “These guys are such great people first and foremost, and they’re terrific hockey players. “You don’t win championships without character. I believe we have it in abundance.”

How did two separate organizations, each with a long history but also with similar missions and philosopies, come up with a new combined name? We developed our new name by selecting the words that tell the stories of our former namesakes, while also describing who we are and what we do. “Humane” describes our continued Open Door policy and our desire to restore all animals to full health, while “Animal Rescue” details our goal of helping all animals in need, both domestic and wild. Our new logo reflects the animals we serve: one tail represents wildlife and the other tail represents domestic animals.

FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR
BY: ROBERTO BAGNATO For the second straight year, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the USHL, and the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau were proud to welcome over 1,000 players to the Fall Classic in Pittsburgh and Cranberry, PA. All 17 USHL teams competed in a showcase, performing in front of a record 250+ scouts and recruiters. Director of NHL Central Scouting, Dan Marr was pleased with the number of pro-hockey personnel on hand to take in the event, “This event here, when you factor in all the NCAA (personnel), that there are a number of Canadian Hockey League teams here along with the National Hockey League scouts, I don’t know that there are this many eyes on prospects as there are in any other event in the world. While the USHL competition ended on Sunday, the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, along with the Baierl Ice Complex and the RMU Island Sports
Center played host to two invitational Tier I (AAA) tournaments which took place from Thursday to Monday. The Penguins Elite 16U were faced with a difficult draw, facing Shattuck- St.Mary’s, Team Wisconsin, and Compuware. After a decisive win against Shattuck St. Mary’s, the team finished 1-3-0 in the tournament. The Penguins Elite 14U team played fantastic hockey throughout the weekend. After going 3-0 in the preliminary round, the 14U boys team won their semi-final decisively 5-1 against the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, advancing to the final against the Minnesota Blades. After allowing four first period goals, the team battled back to score three unanswered, but couldn’t find the fourth to tie the game. The Penguins would like to thank all of the participants, volunteers, and franchises for their support on a successful 2017 Fall Classic!
