KANE IS ABLE: The Blackhawks’ 14-9-4 record through 27 games included a 12-6-4 mark during a scoring streak for RW Patrick Kane that had reached 22 consecutive games through Dec. 6. Chicago was 6-4-3 in the streak when Kane scored a goal, something he had done 13 times in the 22-game run, including eight times on the power play.

Kane’s 22-game effort surpassed the record for an American-born player, which had been shared at 18 games by Phil Kessel and Eddie Olczyk, and it broke the Blackhawks’ record of 21 games established by Bobby Hull in 1971-72. Kane’s streak was the third of at least 22 games since 1992-93 (Sidney Crosby, 25, 2010-11, and Dany Heatley, 22, 2005-06).

D Shea Weber was front and center in the Predators’ power-play resurrection. Weber registered a hat trick in a 5-4 overtime win on Dec. 5 at Detroit and all three of his goals were power-play goals. The hat trick was the first for Weber and the first by a defenseman in Predators’ history. Weber also became the fifth defenseman since 1991 to score at least three power-play

On Dec. 11, the Penguins host the Los Angeles Kings, the second game in seven days between the teams. In Los Angeles on Dec. 5, the Kings earned a 3-0 lead on second-period goals 8:31 apart by Drew Doughty, former Penguin Christian Ehrhoff and Milan Lucic, then held off a Pittsburgh charge to earn a 5-3 victory. Former Penguins’ draft pick Jake Muzzin also scored for Los Angeles and added two assists while Lucic also scored an empty-net goal. Chris Kunitz, Olli Maatta and Sidney Crosby scored for Pittsburgh, Kunitz also picked up two assists. . . The Penguins have won four of their last five home games against the Kings, including a 3-0 decision Oct. 30 of last season. Los Angeles has scored only seven total goals in those last five games here. . . Crosby’s goal last week against the Kings was his first ever in Los Angeles. . . The Penguins are 63-71-1 with 18 ties all-time against Los Angeles, including a mark of 42-26-0 with 10 ties here in Pittsburgh. . . The last time the Penguins were swept by the Kings in a season series of at least two games was 2002-03 (0-2-0). . . Pittsburgh has won eight of its last 11 games against Los Angeles. . . On Dec. 14, the Washington Capitals pay their first visit of the season to Pittsburgh. The teams played once earlier this season, with the Penguins earning a 3-1 victory in Washington on Oct. 28. Marc-Andre Fleury made 33 saves and Nick Bonino had a goal and an assist in the victory, which saw all four goals scored in the third period. Beau Bennett and Phil Kessel also scored for Pittsburgh, while Evgeny Kuznetsov had the lone Capitals’ goal. . . The Penguins have won two straight games against Washington and are 10-3-0 in their last 13 against the Capitals. However, Pittsburgh has lost two straight home games to Washington and 10 of its last 15 home games against them (5-8-2). . . The next game between the teams is January 24 in Washington, a Sunday afternoon game. . . Alexander Ovechkin has 17 career goals in 20 regular season games in Pittsburgh. . . Evgeni Malkin has gone eight games without a goal against the Capitals. . . Since Crosby and Ovechkin entered the league, the Penguins are 23-13-4 in 40 regular season games against Washington, including a 10-8-2 mark here in Pittsburgh. . . The Penguins play six of their last 10 December games here at home. They finished a four-game, 12-day road trip Dec. 9 in Denver against the Avalanche. . . Olli Maatta returned to the Pittsburgh lineup Dec. 5 in Los Angeles after missing six games with an upper body injury. . . David Warsofsky made his Penguins debut Dec. 1 in a 5-1 win at San Jose, Pittsburgh’s first win there in more than 18 years. Warsofsky was the 14th American to skate for the Penguins this season and 118th all-time. The most American-born players to skate for Pittsburgh in a season was 15 in 2010-11 . . . Maatta followed his goal against the Kings last week with a goal in the Penguins’ 2-1 loss in Anaheim the following night, giving him goals in consecutive games for just the second time in his career. . . He autographed it for me after practice in 2000 when he came out of retirement. I will never forget that moment. WHAT PENGUINS RELATED STORY DO YOU RETELL MOST OFTEN? The night Mario came out of retirement. Earlier in the month, my wife stated she did not want to go to the game on December 27. When Mario announced he was coming out of retirement and playing that night, I recommended to my wife that she should go with me. She did and she loved every moment as much as me. Seeing Mario’s son Austin watch his dad’s jersey being lowered from the rafters was unbelievable. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME PLAYOFF RITUALS? I just try to wear the same clothes to each game…a turtleneck, jersey, pants, shoes, jacket and hat. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? In ‘91, I was at a bar on Route 22 in Monroeville that’s no longer there. For the Cup in ‘92, I was home in front of a brand new TV I had bought on the way home from work that night. And for the Cup in ‘09, I was home with my wife watching the TV. I almost went to Detroit, but didn’t because of ticket prices. I could have kicked myself after the game. I wish I had spent the money and gone. IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS, OR HOCKEY IN GENERAL, GREAT? I like the constant action on the ice and the speed of the game. On the weekend of Nov. 27-29, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the 10th Annual Pittsburgh Girls Thanksgiving Classic. Seventy teams and approximately 1,200 players traveled to Pittsburgh to play during the holiday break. The tournament was played at the Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels and had age divisions ranging from U10 – U19. This was the biggest youth hockey tournament in Pittsburgh out of all the tournaments the past several months. With the growing number of participants, the tournament used three arenas — UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, RMU Island Sports Center, and the Bairel Ice Complex in Warrendale to host the weekend’s festivities. There were 49 teams from areas other than Pittsburgh, including Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Owen Sound, Sarnia and United States teams from Virginia, New Jersey, Michigan, New York and North Carolina. “This annual Thanksgiving Classic is a great opportunity for our Pens Elite teams to be able to host such a large hockey tournament in Pittsburgh where younger girls get the chance to compete against some of the best in the area”, says Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Director of Operations Kathy Pippy. “Ten years ago there were no girls’ programs in the region, and today, with the support of the Pittsburgh Penguins and DICK’S Sporting Goods we have grown to develop girls’ teams’ U10 up to U19. The future is very bright for girls’ hockey in Pittsburgh!” The Penguins Elite were well represented during the tournament, with the 14U team bringing home the championship and the 19U and 12U Elite making it to the finals. The Thanksgiving tournament continues to grow and be successful every year because of the support of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, and DICK’S Sporting Goods.

In three-on-three overtime, there’s lots of space but little margin for error. When you make a play, you have to be sure. When the Penguins were in extra time vs. St. Louis on Nov. 25 at CONSOL Energy Center, defenseman Ben Lovejoy was absolutely certain. “I both heard and saw Phil [Kessel],” Lovejoy said. Seconds later, the game was over. Lovejoy won a puck battle on the boards near the center line, flicking a backhand pass to Kessel to ignite a two-on-one. Kessel fed Evgeni Malkin, who blazed a path to the St. Louis net and deposited a backhand behind Blues goaltender Jake Allen after 63 seconds of overtime. Penguins 4, Blues 3. It was an electrifying finish to a hard-fought contest, The beginning of the end was provided by Lovejoy. “Having the puck is so important in three-on-three,” Lovejoy said. “There was a bit of a 50-50 puck against their tired line. I knew that I had to win that puck. That was the most important thing. “There was no [St. Louis player] in the middle, and Phil was there. I was able to get [the puck] to him, and those guys are pretty lethal two-on-one.” The helper capped a terrific game for Lovejoy. The 6-foot-1, 206-pound New Hampshire native scored at 6:49 of the third period to put the Penguins up 3-2. Winger David Perron dished to Lovejoy at the top of the slot, and Lovejoy snapped a wrist shot just inside the right post for his second goal of the season. “Very rarely do I hit where I’m aiming, said Lovejoy, 31. “But that was exactly where I was trying to put it. There was definitely a screen. There was no way [Allen] saw it. But believe it or not, that was where I was aiming.” Lovejoy’s primary job, of course, is defense. He and 6-foot-4 Brian Dumoulin have formed a shutdown pair for Coach Mike Johnston. Lovejoy and Dumoulin often draw duty against the opposition’s top line. “That’s what I did most of my time in Anaheim with [Cam] Fowler,” Lovejoy said. “There’s so much high-end talent in this league. You really need to keep them in front of you. Sometimes there’s a 50-50 puck where you have to err on the defensive side because if you get caught leaning, you’re in trouble and you can get punished for it. continued on page 31

“So my first job — our first job, for me and [Dumoulin] — is to try and be really hard to play against.” Lovejoy certainly feels that Dumoulin is keeping up his end of that bargain. Dumoulin, 24, had played just 19 NHL games before the current campaign. “[Dumoulin] is awesome,” Lovejoy said after the win over St. Louis. “He’s been borderline perfect all year. He makes very few mistakes. “He’s incredibly mature for a young defenseman, and what I’m most impressed by is his commitment to defense. That’s what he’s doing first. He hasn’t cheated once. Lots of times, a high-profile young defenseman coming into the league will judge their game by how many points they get. He’s not that way at all. “[Dumoulin] wants to go out and shut down — tonight, it was [Vladimir] Tarasenko, and he did a great job. [Tarasenko] is incredibly dangerous coming down the wing, and I thought Dumoulin handled him very well all night.” Tarasenko had 15 goals and 11 assists in his first 26 games this season. On Nov. 25, the Penguins limited him to zero points and one shot. Lovejoy played in each of the Penguins’ first 25 games, tallying two goals and three assists. He was plus-7, the second-best mark among Penguins’ defensemen. Last season, Lovejoy had two goals and 12 assists in 60 games. He played 40 games with Anaheim and 20 with Pittsburgh, joining the Penguins for his second tour of duty with the team after a trade deadline deal that sent defenseman Simon Despres the other way. Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

Jason Botterill is in his second season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WB/S Penguins have made the playoffs all six years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 39, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. JASON KARMANOS VICE PRESIDENT OF HOCKEY OPERATIONS

Jason Karmanos is in his second season as the vice president of hockey operations after being named to his current position on June 12, 2014. Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury. MIKE JOHNSTON HEAD COACH

Mike Johnston is in his second season as head coach of the Penguins. In his first year, Johnston helped the Penguins earn the team’s ninth-consecutive postseason berth. He had the highest point total (56) and best points percentage (.683) thru 41 games among any Penguins coach in their first full season behind the bench in team history. Before joining the Penguins, Johnston spent six years as the general manager/head coach of the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 2008-13, where he helped turn Portland into a Canadian Hockey League powerhouse and perennial contender. Under Johnston’s guidance, Portland made four straight WHL Championship berths (2010-14), winning the WHL championship and earning a Memorial Cup berth in 2012-13. During that time his team won four straight conference championships. Johnston’s teams were known for their offensive prowess — during his six seasons with Portland, his team’s goals for total rose each year from 176 in 2008-09 to a league-leading 338 in ‘13-14. Johnston also served two NHL stints as assistant/associate coach of the Vancouver Canucks (1999-06) and associate coach of the Los Angeles Kings (2006-08). With Johnston’s help, Vancouver made four straight trips to the postseason and won the Northwest Division crown in 2003-04. He has represented his country multiple times internationally, including serving as assistant coach of Canada’s 1998 Olympic Team. As an assistant/associate coach for Team Canada, he has won five medals (2 gold; 2 silver; 1 bronze) at the World Championships and two gold medals at the World Junior Championships. Johnston has authored three books with former NHL player Ryan Walter: Simply the Best: Insights and Strategies from Great Hockey Coaches, Simply the Best: Players on Performance and Hockey Plays and Strategies. He played college hockey at Brandon University in Manitoba and Acadia University in Nova Scotia and has a Master’s Degree in coaching science from Acadia University.

RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards and the power play. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

GARY AGNEW ASSISTANT COACH

Gary Agnew is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Penguins. During his first season with Pittsburgh, Agnew helped the club finish with the NHL’s third-highest penalty kill success rate at 84.8 percent. Prior to joining Pittsburgh, Agnew was an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues for two seasons from 2012-14, helping the Blues win the fifth-most games in the NHL during that span (81). Agnew spent four years as an assistant coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2006-10, where he helped the Blue Jackets earn a postseason berth for the first time in franchise history in 2008-09. As head coach of the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch from 2000-06, Agnew won a franchise-record 220 games, and he led Syracuse to its first-ever division title in 2001-02. He also has 14 years of coaching experience in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), including 11 as a head coach. He has won over 350 career OHL games with London (1989-94, ‘97-00), Kingston (1994-97) and Oshawa (2011-12). Agnew was named OHL Coach of the Year twice — in 1993 and ’98.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92.

JACQUES MARTIN SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE HEAD COACH

Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization, his first as special assistant to the head coach. His primary role will be to analyze games from the media level and provide instant observations to head coach Mike Johnston and his staff. Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams has been a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses. A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND BROADCASTING

Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder. Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond. Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

BUNDLE-UP FOR WINTER

When autumn leaves fall to a winter’s wind, it marks the time of year for the Penguins Project Bundle-Up Shopping Day in partnership with the Salvation Army. On November 12, Penguins players spent the afternoon shopping with middle school children in need of new outerwear for the cold winter months. Players were paired with the children as they shopped for new coats, boots, gloves and hats. Along with the shopping spree, the children enjoyed collecting autographs and taking fun photographs to keep as mementos. Penguins corporate partners DICK’S Sporting Goods and Fox’s Pizza Den teamed up with the Penguins to support this annual event for The Salvation Army. A great time was certainly had by all!

Learn more about the 23-year-old Buffalo native in this Q&A. FIRST HOCKEY MEMORY? Probably my first full lap I did when I was trying to learn to skate. I got chicken fingers after from my dad. That was our promise. If I made it one time around without falling I got chicken fingers.

HIDDEN TALENTS? I consider myself an above-average golfer. That’s about it.

MOST EMBARRASSING HOCKEY MEMORY? I played right wing growing up. I had a breakaway and I pushed the puck too far in front of me. I could have caught up to it but the goalie said that he’d get it. So I just stopped and let the goalie come out and cover the puck. I was five-years-old at the time. I didn’t know. I was obviously clueless.

HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture in the educational space. Understanding the importance of KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE technology in the classroom, the Foundation developed a one-of-a-kind program that would combine the latest in tablet technology with the ever changing landscape in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s classroom. This program became Tablets in Education. Since itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inception, Tablets in Education has provided over 120 schools and educational programs in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, Washington and Westmoreland counties with a total of 2,700 Kindle Fire tablets. In 2015, the Foundation purchased over 150,000 apps and specialized content for the program. PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a Radio Broadcast Host and PensTV Host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the sports director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. As the Penguins’ recent four-game, 12-day swing through San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim and Colorado dragged on, Brian Dumoulin started getting antsy. Because while he loves trying new restaurants, Dumoulin has a passion for cooking and prefers to prepare meals himself with roommate Beau Bennett when they’re home in Pittsburgh. “On long road trips, we’re like, ‘I can’t wait to get back home and just cook,’” Dumoulin said. “We don’t do it every night, but we try to do it as much as we can.” Dumoulin and Bennett, both 24, get a lot of their inspiration from the Food Network, where a few of the shows they watch include Giada at Home, Barefoot Contessa and Chopped. But Dumoulin’s favorite culinary icon is actually over on the Travel Channel. “If I could be anyone in the world, I’d be Anthony Bourdain. He’s like my idol,” Dumoulin joked. “My favorite TV show is The Layover. I love seeing where he travels.” Right now, the boys’ specialty is sea bass cooked in a miso glaze. “We’ve been making that a lot,” Dumoulin said. “The past three times we’ve made it, we cooked it with shrimp and scallop risotto and usually asparagus or broccoli or a green on the side. It takes a little bit of time, but it’s pretty simple and it’s fun.” Dumoulin’s parents Deb and Pete both grew up in northern Maine. On Thanksgiving, they would go to his mom’s side for lunch and his dad’s side for dinner, and it was Brian’s maternal grandparents that helped spark his love for cooking. continued on page 131

“That side of my family, they’re big hunters so they’d always bring some special stuff,” Dumoulin said. “They loved doing all the stuff and they’d prepare for what seemed like weeks. I think I was just always enjoying the food and I wanted to be able to cook like that. That’s where I got it from.” However, Dumoulin didn’t start getting serious about cooking until he left home to attend Boston College, where being on his own, he had to. And instead of doing what many other college kids do — eat at the cafeteria or order takeout — Dumoulin starting honing his chef skills. And ever since he turned pro, Dumoulin has even more time to continue sharpening those abilities. Especially on off and practice days, when he’s done in the early afternoon and has lots of time to spend shopping for ingredients and working on recipes. During the summers, Dumoulin’s schedule is even more free. He lives with two of his former Boston College teammates and roommates, Pat Mullane and Parker Milner (who’s a native of Mt. Lebanon) in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston, and the three of them love to fire up the grill and get to work. They’ve even taken to social media to show off their chef skills, as the boys started an Instagram called “486_eats” where they post photos and detailed descriptions of dishes they’ve made. While Dumoulin whips up a lot of items you would expect a hockey player to eat — seafood, steaks and vegetables along with

one of his go-tos, a sweet potato mash — he loves experimenting with more unique fare as well. That includes Indian goat curry, veal sweetbreads — even bear and kangaroo. “There’s this exotic meat store in Boston we go to a lot called Savenor’s Market,” Dumoulin said. “It’s in Beacon Hill. They have the widest variety: rattlesnake, bison steaks, kangaroo, full rabbits. They even have lion.” Like a true chef, nothing scares Dumoulin when it comes to food. He loves figuring out the best way to cook those meats and how to complement them with sides to come up with balanced dishes. As Bourdain has said, “Good food and good eating are about risk.” “I really like learning how to cook the weird stuff and what goes good together,” Dumoulin said. “If you learn how to cook it well it’s going to be good. I really like cooking and that’s what makes it fun. I’m not the best. I just like learning about it.” Here in Pittsburgh, Dumoulin occasionally cooks for groups — but he cautioned it may be a while before he hosts a team dinner for the guys. “Mostly I like cooking for myself and one other, because I have to try it out before I cook it in front of a bunch of people so I can always make adjustments,” he said. Until then, Bennett is going to keep enjoying his roommate’s fare. “He’s an unbelievable cook,” Bennett said.

Penguins head coach Mike Johnston firmly believes that the trio of Matt Cullen, Sergei Plotnikov and Eric Fehr is one of the league’s top fourth lines. He’s said as much on multiple occasions the last several weeks, backing up that statement with action on Dec. 5 in Los Angeles by starting the unit against a Kings team that possessed the secondbest record in the Western Conference. The catalyst for the fourth line’s rise to become a trio that Johnston and his staff loathe to break up, even as they continue to search for a sustainable goal-scoring formula, has been the rookie Plotnikov. To fully appreciate how far the Komsomolsk, Russia native has come in his first two months in the league, one must look beyond the traditional goals and assists numbers that many use to evaluate a forward’s production. That’s because in the eight consecutive games Plotnikov has played alongside Cullen and Fehr beginning Nov. 19 against Colorado, he had exactly zero points to show for his improvement heading into a rematch against the Aves on Dec. 9. But that matters less when you re-watch the film and gain an appreciation for how Plotnikov has used his greatest strength — the strong lower core of his thickly-built, 6-foot-2, 202-pound body — to create time, space and scoring chances. “[Plotnikov’s] getting more comfortable with our group,” Johnston said prior to the Penguins’ visit to San Jose on Dec. 1. “I think he’s really settling in personally to Pittsburgh, the language situation. I like the way he’s playing right now. He’s a heavy bodied guy in our lineup.” continued on page 144

Yes, after five preseason games, a first six weeks that featured plenty of healthy scratches mixed in with so-so stretches of play, and having to deal with migrating roughly 5,400 miles from home, Plotnikov appears on the verge of breaking out. In that game against the Kings when he and his line earned the start thanks to back-to-back strong efforts against St. Louis and San Jose, Plotnikov nearly changed the course of the afternoon a mere minutes after Drew Doughty staked the Kings to a 1-0 second-period lead. Taking a pass behind the Los Angeles’ net from Fehr, Plotnikov skated around the back of the cage, protecting the puck on his backhand. His initial shot went off the paddle of Jonathan Quick, but his rebound attempt got behind the two-time Cup champ, but unfortunately the crossbar was there to save the day for LA, which held on for the 5-3 win. One night later in Anaheim, Plotnikov again used a power move from behind the net, this time to his forehand, but Whitehall, PA native John Gibson was there to deny him in a 1-1 game the Ducks won, 2-1. Sure, the end results for Plotnikov and the Penguins weren’t what you’d want, but watching the 25 year old ‘get to his game’ as they like to say in locker room speak, is the more important development. Because as the calendar continues to flip from the cold winter months into the fresh air of spring, you get the feeling we won’t be talking about how close Sergei Plotnikov is to scoring, but rather we’ll be gushing about how his goals are sparking the Penguins to a ninth-straight playoff berth.

The appearance of a Top 10 team and the resumption of a budding college hockey rivalry highlight this year’s Three Rivers Classic, Dec. 28-29 at CONSOL Energy Center. “From the time Robert Morris became the first school in Pittsburgh to play Division I hockey we’ve tried to create a platform to grow the college game,” said Penguins Vice President of Communications Tom McMillan. “It started with Robert Morris playing one game at the old Mellon Arena and grew into a tournament where we bring in four teams. We’ve been fortunate to have some of the top programs in the country. “The Classic continues to expose Pittsburgh fans to college hockey.” The fourth-annual Classic opens with Clarkson taking on Massachusetts-Lowell, ranked No. 8 in the Dec. 7 USCHO.com Top 20, at 4:30 p.m., on Monday, Dec. 28. Robert Morris and Penn State, No. 16 in the Dec. 7 USCHO.com ranking, renew their annual hostilities at 8:00 p.m. The first day’s losers will meet in the first game on Dec. 29, followed by a championship-game clash between the first day’s winners. No. 17 Colgate defeated Robert Morris, 6-1, to win the 2014 Three Rivers Classic. No. 7 Boston College topped Penn State, 8-2, in the championship game in 2013. MEET THE PENGUINS 2015

DRAFT CLASS DANIEL SPRONG

Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), hopes to become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

DOMINIK SIMON

Forward • 5th round, 137th overall Simon has played his entire career in the Czech Republic League. He played the 2014-15 season for HC Plzen, a team owned by former Penguins player Martin Straka, and finished tied for third on the team with 30 points (18G-12A) in 52 games. continued on page 175

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.

FREDERICK TIFFELS

Forward • 6th round, 167th overall In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college. Tiffels is a big soccer fan and follows his hometown club, FC Koln. His favorite player on the team is Lukas Podolski.

NIKITA PAVLYCHEV

Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark Hosanna House/Sherwood Event Center Wilkinsburg have completed a four year Lewis Park Hazelwood $2.3 million initiative. In September 2015, the last North Park McCandless dek rink was completed Paul J. Scuillo II Memorial Park Bloomfield bringing the total Renzie Park McKeesport completed rinks to 12. Richland Community Park Richland Twp. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.
