IMMEDIATE IMPACT: Buffalo C Jack Eichel (9) and C Sam Reinhart (8) combined for 17 goals in the Sabres’ first 30 games. That had the pair on pace to become the second set of rookies in Buffalo history to each score 20 goals in the same season and the first since Danny Gare (31) and Peter McNab (22) in 1974-75. Eichel, with 14 points through 30 games, and Reinhart, at 12 points through 30 games, were also on pace to become the first Buffalo rookie duo to each amass 30 points in a season since Thomas Vanek (48) and Jason Pominville (30) in 2005-06.

SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT
KAREN PUCHALSKY WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? One of my closest friends and loyal Penguins fan, Judy Pacek comes to most of the games with me. If Judy is unable to attend, then I invite other friends to join me. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE SNACK/FOOD ITEM AT CONSOL Energy Center? French fries with cheese and of course jalapeno peppers on top!
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Season Ticket Location: 104, K, 1-2 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 1989
PAST OR PRESENT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? I really enjoyed when one of the Penguins players was spotlighted and talked about their first job, their favorite sport to do outside of hockey, etc. It was great to get to know the player better. continued on page 20

WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE KEEPSAKE IN YOUR PERSONAL COLLECTION OF PENGUINS MEMORABILIA? It would probably have to be my curtains in my home office for two important reasons. One, they are made out of rally towels from past Stanley Cup runs. And two, because a very special friend made them for me. Karen (right) and Judy at Snapshots
DO YOU HAVE ANY with Stanley in 2009 UNIQUE PRE OR POSTGAME PLAYOFF RITUALS? Yes. If I am watching the game on TV, I have to sit on the side of the couch. And if the Penguins win the game, I wear the “lucky” shirt again for the next away game. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? In 1991, I was in the Civic Arena watching the game. In 1992, I was watching it at a bar with friends in Columbus, Ohio. I was living there for a few years but I still came back to Pittsburgh to attend the games. In ’09, I was watching the game at home with a roomful of friends. We were all together for the last away game win that season, so we had to come together again and sit in the same seats. WHICH TEAM/ARENA WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT FOR A PENGUINS GAME AND WHY? My friend Judy and I plan to see the Penguins play in every opposing arena. So far we have been in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Tampa Bay, Florida, North Carolina, Philadelphia, New Jersey, and all three outdoor games in Buffalo, Chicago and Pittsburgh. We are looking forward to going to Ottawa and Montreal. IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS, OR HOCKEY IN GENERAL, GREAT? I love the Penguins’ commitment to the Pittsburgh community and the fact that hockey players are good, down to earth people.

PENGUINS PROFILE
DAVID
WARSOFSKY By: Mark Madden
28
Admit it, IceTime reader: Before defenseman David Warsofsky made his Penguins debut Dec. 1 at San Jose, you had no idea who he was. But you should know now. The ex-Boston Bruin had played just 10 NHL games before that 5-1 win over the Sharks, but immediately got legit minutes and a big role with the Penguins, including power-play time. Warsofsky skated nearly 25 minutes in a 3-2 shootout loss to visiting Los Angeles on Dec. 11, his biggest workload to that point. Warsofsky played college hockey at Boston University. He was in the Bruins’ system for five years before joining Pittsburgh as a free agent this past summer. “Looking at the teams that were interested, I thought it was a good fit,” said Warsofsky. “They’re an up-tempo team. They like to get offense, and if you look around the league, there’s not a better group of forwards on any team. With the group of forwards they have here, they’re so skilled. So it’s important to get the puck in their hands and spend as little time in the D-zone as you can. “I’ve got an opportunity, and I just want to take advantage of it. Obviously, it’s a lot better when we’re winning. I just want to contribute.” Warsofsky is just 5-foot-8, 170 pounds. You’d think he’d get overwhelmed on puck battles. But Warsofsky does OK by utilizing his skates and smarts. “I’m 25. I’ve been this size for a while,” Warsofsky said, smiling. “The big thing is my stick position, and I’ve got to use my skating ability and try to outsmart guys as much as I can. “I’m not going to grow much more, so I’ve got to get used to playing with what I have.” Warsofsky has excellent skills as a power-play quarterback. Applying those skills on a unit that includes superstar players like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel presents him with a challenge. “I like to distribute more than shoot, anyway,” said the Massachusetts native. “Those guys are going to find a way to get open, so I’ve going to give them the puck whenever possible. And if I have a lane to shoot, or make my own play, I think they’re good with that.” Warsofsky was pleased with his role over his first five games with Pittsburgh. continued on page 31

“They’re putting me in a position to succeed,” said Warsofsky. “I’m playing some power play, which I’m used to, and trying to contribute offensively. That’s the key to my game and at the same time, I need to take care of things defensively.” Warsofsky seemed to be on the ice constantly during the Penguins’ loss to the Kings, one of the more exciting games of the season at CONSOL Energy Center. The Kings took a 2-1 lead into the game’s waning moments, but Malkin netted a short backhand with 70 seconds left to force overtime. After breathtaking back-and-forth action during three-on-three play, the Kings won the shootout. “It’s nice to get a point out of that,” Warsofsky said. “We competed pretty hard at the end. It was nice to get [Malkin’s] goal and tie it up.” Warsofsky was the St. Louis Blues’ fourth-round pick in the 2008 NHL Draft. His rights were traded to the Bruins in 2010 while Warsofsky was playing college hockey at BU. He played six games with the Bruins in 2013-14, scoring his first NHL goal. He played four more games with Boston last season.
Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to nine straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

JIM RUTHERFORD
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. The show has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as the best sports series in the Mid-Atlantic region in both 2014 and 2015. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team they’ve never seen before.”

PENGUINS RE-CREATE
HOME ALONE FOR HOLIDAY E-CARD By: Michelle Crechiolo
“Keep the change, ya filthy animal!” That’s just one of the many memorable lines from the 1990 film Home Alone that Penguins players will be uttering in this year’s holiday e-card, a year after they memorably spoofed National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. “It was a great choice,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “I knew that one a lot better than I knew Christmas Vacation. This one is just a classic. I’ve seen it probably 100 times. There’s some really good parts. I remember every part of that movie. Just seeing which guys fit which characters was pretty funny.” While both flicks are holiday classics, they certainly differed in tone and style. “It was interesting seeing the differences between how we made this one versus last year because the movies were so different from each other,” said PensTV producer Mark Cottington, who spearheaded the project along with motion graphics design producer Dave Distilli. “Christmas Vacation is very line-based humor whereas Home Alone is very slapstick comedy. We had to plan around that in order to make it work.” continued on page 72

continued from page 71
At least 50 hours of prep work went into the project, starting when Cottington and Distilli took the original theatrical trailer and built a new one off that featuring iconic scenes from the movie. From there, they created a shot sheet and used that to figure out what exactly needed to go into each shot — including props, framing, lighting, angles and which player they wanted to fill each role. Every player who was on the roster at the time got a part, as did Penguins broadcasters Paul Steigerwald, Bob Errey, Dan Potash, Mike Lange and Phil Bourque. Distilli then got busy preparing composites and digital plates for each shot so that he could layer the players in using Adobe Photoshop and AfterEffects, while Cottington booked special effects makeup artist Nathan Blaine — who created the burnt skull cap from the flamethrower — and visited about 5-6 thrift stores in the Pittsburgh area to get the rest of the props. They had to get everything ready ahead of time because this year, they only had one day to shoot the holiday e-card due to of the team’s travel schedule. So they arrived to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex early in the morning on a practice day to set up two green screens and make sure everything was ready crew- and prop-wise. Overall, the shoot was a tremendous success as everything went smooth production-wise — and the guys had a blast doing it. “A lot of the players actually knew the movie and they found a lot of connection,” Distilli said. “Most of the guys knew their parts continued on page 75

without us even explaining it to them, so they were very excited and enthusiastic.” They were not “les incompetents,” as Linnie McCallister would say. Of the entire group, Cottington said he felt defenseman Kris Letang was the best actor. “With his scene, there was a lot of screaming and he had to be shirtless and just spraying Axe, especially under his armpit to get the right look so it stunk up the locker room,” Cottington said. “He went for it. Ian Cole was another one because he was the one who actually had the makeup artist paint an iron imprint on his face and had to act like he stepped on a nail, so he was falling down and screaming.” And while Crosby ceded that Letang was perfect for his role, the captain’s Oscar nomination went to someone else. “I think Mike Lange gets the nod again for Johnny the Gangster,” Crosby laughed. “He was the star in the last one and I’m sure he’s going to be the star again.” After the eight-hour shoot concluded, Distilli — who studied visual effects in college — spent another 20 hours creating the finished product, one of which everyone is very proud. And moving forward, Crosby already has an idea for next year. “We did the first Home Alone, but there’s two. We’ll have to do the second one next year, hopefully,” he smiled. “That’d be good.”

PENGUINS AND US MARINE CORPS SUPPORT
TOYS FOR TOTS
The Penguins organization held its annual Toys for Tots toy collection prior to the team’s home games on Friday, December 11 and Monday, December 14. Penguins Booster Club members and the Central Catholic High School Inline Hockey team worked alongside members of the Marine Corps, collecting new unwrapped toys and cash donations that the Marines used to purchase toys for underprivileged children in the Pittsburgh region. In addition to the game day collections, the Penguins Foundation teamed up with 96.1 KISS Radio’s Stuff-A-Bus program by holding an online Toys for Tots donation opportunity for fans. The online program generated more than $18,000 for the Penguins’ overall Toys for Tots effort this season. The game day toy collection has been a team tradition since 1992. All fans who made a donation at the games were eligible to win autographed Penguins prizes. Over the past decade, Penguins fans have donated over 18,300 toys and $81,000 at the Penguins annual toy drives, making the holiday brighter for so many local children and their families.

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the team. Designed to sell remaining game day inventory, the Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2015-16 season, an estimated 200 Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. Eligible students have access to purchase these tickets through an exclusive, day of game, online pre-sale. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text also includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several games have been designated special Student Rush nights. For these games, at least 500 tickets will be available online! For more information on the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush program, the terms and conditions and a schedule of special Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush. HOCKEY
ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:7.5”
HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. For more information about Heads UP Pittsburgh and testing locations, visit our website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

NEW WORLD ORDER IN PITTSBURGH By: Sam Kasan
There is a new world order in Pittsburgh. New Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan arrived Dec. 12 and addressed his team before practice the next day with a simple message. “I challenged them to embrace the process,” said Sullivan, who was in his first season as head coach of the Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton before general manager Jim Rutherford named him head coach of the organization’s NHL team. “I told them hockey is a hard game. It’s a hard sport. It’s hard to win. We have to embrace the struggle here. We have to embrace the process. I think if we do that we have the best chance moving forward.” Part of that process involves the formation of the Penguins’ identity, something that seemed to be lacking through the first 28 games of the season. “I talked to them about creating an identity as a group and we’ll speak towards that and we’ll define that,” Sullivan said. “We’ll work towards that. I think the importance of creating that continued on page 131

identity and down to a man is ‘what’s your contribution to helping this team win?’” Sullivan wants the team’s identity to mirror their strengths on the ice. “What are our strengths as a group and how do we play to those strengths to have a competitive advantage?” Sullivan said. “I don’t think it’s any secret that the Pittsburgh Penguins are built around speed and skill. That has to be part of our identity on how we’re going to play.” However, a team’s identity isn’t just measured on the ice. It begins before they even step on the ice. “Part of our identity is a mindset,” Sullivan said. “It’s a team that’s difficult to play against. How do you create that? It’s a team that doesn’t defeat itself by lack of discipline or lack of structure or lack of commitment. There is a lot that go into an identity above and beyond the style of play.” Ultimately though, the formation of the team’s identity will fall to the players and how they execute on the ice. “The players have to take ownership of their team,” Sullivan said. “It’s their team. It’s not mine. It’s our job to help them and challenge them to reach their potential. “For me, that’s my challenge.” Talking about an identity and creating one are two different ideas. It’s easy to say you want to be a difficult team to play against. But it’s only accomplished with the details. “We’re going to try to define a team game,” Sullivan said. “We’re going to try to define what it means to play the right way I don’t think it’s any down to the details. We’ll work on that secret that the Pittsburgh daily. We’ll come to Penguins are built around the rink every day and try to get better.” speed and skill. have to get the Penguins to accomplish that starting 28 games into the season. Sullivan feels that a one-day-at-a-time approach is the best way of handling that task. “We can’t get overwhelmed by the circumstance,” Sullivan said. “We have to focus on the process and have an unwavering commitment to that process of trying to get better, trying to improve, trying to define what we are as a group.” And if they do that, Sullivan believes that the Penguins can fulfill their potential. “I think we have a chance to be a great team,” Sullivan said. “But we have to show that through our actions.” It’s going to be a challenge to get this team to where it needs to be, but Sullivan is excited to get started. “I’m excited to be a part of this group,” Sullivan said. “I’m honored to have the privilege to coach this group. I told them that I’ve coached in this league for a number of years against them and I have a ton of respect for their abilities and their accomplishments. Having said that, I’m going to challenge them as their coach to grow and get their games to another level. That’s my responsibility as their coach. I think it’s a message we’re going to continue to preach. I hope it’s something that will be welcome to the group. I don’t know how anyone can reach their potential without being challenged. I think as the head coach that’s my responsibility.”

LOSS OF DUPUIS
WILL BE FELT ON AND OFF THE ICE By: Jason Seidling
You know you’re a big deal when it’s breaking news both when you are acquired by a team, and when you depart that club. That was certainly the case for Pascal Dupuis, who announced on Dec. 8 that he would no longer play hockey because of a medical condition related to his blood clots. What makes Dupuis’ story in Pittsburgh so special is what transpired between his dramatic entrance and exit. By now we all know about his arrival. He was the afterthought in the blockbuster deal with the Atlanta Thrashers that brought superstar Marian Hossa and him on Feb. 26, 2008. That summer, Hossa bolted to Detroit in free agency, leaving the Penguins with Dupuis to show for a trade that cost the club, at the time, four prime assets. Fast forward nearly eight years later, and it’s pretty safe to bet EVERY Penguins fan would swap those assets — forwards Colby Armstrong and Erik Christensen, prospect Angelo Esposito and a 2008 first-round pick — for Dupuis ALONE. By the time Dupuis made his gut-wrenching decision at the Big Bear Ice Arena in Denver, Colorado, to no longer play hockey he was arguably the heart and soul of the Pittsburgh Penguins. During a run that encompassed all or parts of nine seasons, Dupuis skated in 452 regular-season games and another 77 postseason contests. He scored 20 goals twice, and 123 goals overall between the regular season and playoffs. Most importantly, he helped deliver Pittsburgh’s third Stanley Cup in 2009. You can go on and on with numbers. How he made the Penguins’ penalty kill consistently one of the NHL’s best. Sidney Crosby won a scoring title with Dupuis as one of his primary continued on page 144
143
continued from page 143
linemates, and would have had 2-3 more had injuries not gotten in the way. Those numbers measure Dupuis’ individual contributions. What we can’t measure are the zillion ways Dupuis made the Penguins a better team off the ice. Pittsburgh won 405 games (regular season and playoffs) with Dupuis on its roster. Only Chicago (414 wins) won more often. That’s because Dupuis made everyone — players, coaches, staff, Dan Potash — better people with his uplifting, energetic and humorous personality. Dupuis had the unique ability to interact with megastars like Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, fellow French-Canadians Marc-Andre Fleury and Kris Letang, or even young call-ups whose stay in Pittsburgh was better measured in days than months. As much of a prankster as Dupuis could be, he was also the guy willing and capable to stand up in front of the room and say what needed to be said in the rare tough times. The positive effect Dupuis had on the organization and city extends beyond the arena walls. Fans felt as if they knew Dupuis personally. That much we learned during his many comebacks the last three years. Outside of Crosby’s comeback goal in November of 2011, the roars haven’t been as loud as each time Dupuis has returned. Even the media contingent clapped following Dupuis’ media conference regarding his decision to step away at CONSOL Energy Center on Dec. 14. Players like Pascal Dupuis don’t come around often. They’re almost impossible to replace. So instead, let’s treasure those great times we had on and off the ice with Dupuis as a Pittsburgh Penguin. Because there won’t be another like him for a while. If ever.

ICEBURGH Iceburgh, the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been entertaining hockey fans worldwide since 1992. As one of the Penguins’ most popular ambassadors, not to mention one of the NHL’s most beloved mascots, you can find Iceburgh leading cheers, beating drums and dancing in the aisles at every Penguins home game, attending major hockey events around the world, visiting local schools, or just spending time at area hospitals and community events. Iceburgh has even been asked to be a guest of honor at numerous wedding celebrations in recent years! There’s no doubt about it, Iceburgh is one busy Penguin! In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. Last season, during his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game in Columbus, Iceburgh helped the Eastern Conference mascots defeat the Western Conference by scoring two goals and two assists in the first annual NHL Mascot Showdown while also emerging victorious in the mascot dance competition. To request an Iceburgh appearance at your next community or special event, please complete the online request form by visiting pittsburghpenguins. com and selecting “Iceburgh” under the “Fan Zone” section.

MIDSEASON
CHANGE By: Mike Prisuta
The last time the Penguins resorted to such a drastic measure, they hit the jackpot. So there’s an established precedent for the move the Penguins made on Dec. 12 — summoning Mike Sullivan from the AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to take over behind the NHL bench for Mike Johnston — working out as the Penguins intend. Replacing a head coach at midseason isn’t often perceived as the best way to go about the business of winning a Stanley Cup, but the Penguins know it can and has been done. They did it the last time they went down this road. The date was Feb. 15, 2009. The Penguins were 27-25-5 when they decided to part was with Michel Therrien. Dan Bylsma came up from the AHL Penguins and promptly lost his first game, a 3-2 shootout decision on Long Island. From there, the Penguins went 18-3-3 to close the regular season, and as it turned out they were just getting started. They defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, four games to two, in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinals. They fell behind the Washington Capitals, two games to none in the Eastern Conference semifinals, then stormed back to win the series in seven. Game Seven was a 6-2 victory on the road. Next in line was Carolina. The Penguins swept the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final. continued on page 157

And finally, Bylsma and the Penguins outlasted the Detroit Red Wings in a thrilling Stanley Cup Final. Once again, the Penguins found themselves in a two-games-to-none hole in the early going of the series. And once again the Penguins stormed back to win the series, finishing off the defending-Stanley Cup champions with a 2-1, Cup-clinching victory on the road in Game Seven. So it can happen. But it hasn’t always happened. Sullivan is the 10th head coach to be inserted by the Penguins with a season already up and running. The eight times it happened prior to Bylsma the Penguins came up short of their ultimate goal. Here’s a look back: In 1972-73, head coach Red Kelly was replaced by Ken Schinkel after 42 games. Kelly had gone 17-19-6. Schinkel went 15-18-3 the rest of the way and the Penguins didn’t make the playoffs. In 1973-74, Schinkel was out after a 14-31-5 record through 50 games and replaced by Marc Boileau. The Penguins went 14-10-4 the rest of the way and didn’t qualify for the playoffs. In 1975-76, it was Schinkel’s turn to replace Boileau. The change was made with the Penguins at 15-23-5 through 43 games. They went 20-10-7 in 37 games under Schinkel and qualified for the postseason, where they lost a best-of-three preliminary-round series to the Toronto Maple Leafs, two games to one. continued on page 158
157
continued from page 157
In 1989-90, Gene Ubriaco was replaced with the Penguins at 10-14-2 through 26 games. Craig Patrick stepped in and went 22-26-6 the rest of the way. The Penguins didn’t qualify for the playoffs. Patrick was brought out of the bullpen again in 1996-97. Eddie Johnston lasted 62 games that season and went 31-26-5. Patrick went 7-10-3 down the stretch and the Penguins made the playoffs but were beaten in five games by the Flyers in an Eastern Conference Herb Brooks quarterfinal series. In 1999-00, Kevin Constantine was replaced after compiling an 8-14-3-4 record through 25 games. Herb Brooks went behind the bench and the Penguins went 29-23-5-2 to finish the regular season, defeated Washington four games to one in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals and ultimately were eliminated by Philadelphia, four games to two, in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Flyers series had opened with the Penguins winning Games One and Two in Philadelphia. But they found heartbreak on home ice, losing Game Three, 4-3 in overtime, and losing Game Four, 2-1 in five overtimes. Philadelphia wound up winning the series’ final four games. In 2001-02, Ivan Hlinka was relieved of his coaching duties after just four games (0-4-0-0). Rick Kehoe assumed the head coaching duties and the Penguins went 28-37-8-5 the rest of the way and failed to qualify for the playoffs. And in 2005-06, Eddie Olczyk went 8-17-6 through 31 games before being replaced by Michel Therrien. The Penguins went 14-29-8 in the final 51 regular-season games and didn’t qualify for the playoffs.
