Season Ticket Holder

SPOTLIGHT

With whom do you attend Penguins home games? My daughter, Sarah, and occasionally my wife, Denise. What is your earliest memory of Penguins hockey? My earliest memory of Penguins hockey is a playoff game against the Chicago Blackhawks with Tony Esposito in goal. What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? My main motivation was my love of the game of hockey, but the addition of the balconies at the Civic Arena (the Igloo) made the perfect sight lines possible. We were able to choose our seats at that time and decided on E18, Row E Seats 1-2.

Richard & Denise Kielar Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Season Ticket Location: Section 213

40 YEAR Penguins Season Ticket Holder

Aside from on-ice action, what do you enjoy most about attending Penguins games? The long-time season ticket holders that sit around us and the fact that I have been able to pass along my love of the game to my daughter, Sarah. What lesser known Penguins player (past or present) has left a lasting impression on you? What Sarah & Rich Kielar visited Rome, Italy shortly after the Penguins won the Stanley Cup in did he do to make that impression? 2016. They took their rally towel with them to There have been many players show their pride and support for the team. throughout the years that have left an impression on me but, Bob “the Battleship” Kelly stands out the most. He had an intensity to his game that was rivaled by few and he was the best hockey fighter that I have ever seen in my life. What is the most unique keepsake in your personal collection of Penguins memorabilia? I would have to say that it is the ticket for the New Year’s Eve game in which Mario Lemieux scored five goals, five different ways (even strength, power play, shorthanded, empty net, penalty shot). continued on page 15

What non-Penguins player do you enjoy seeing play in person? I currently enjoy seeing Jonathan Toews play hockey, but in the past, it was always a joy to see Patrick Roy, Guy Lafleur and Pierre Larouche. What has been your favorite off-ice Penguins event to attend and why? I liked the season ticket holder fan forums that have been held, and of course, visiting with Lord Stanley’s Cup at Snapshots with Stanley. What is your favorite memory from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff run? My favorite memory from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff run was beating the Washington Capitals! It’s always a great day when you can send Alex Ovechkin out of the playoffs. In your eyes, what makes the Pittsburgh Penguins, or hockey in general, great? In most cases, the low scoring and high speed of the game keep hockey interesting. The continual motion during play is what makes the game great. As for the Pittsburgh Penguins, it is the history of the team and my collective memories through the years that keep me coming back each season.

Rich, Sarah & Denise Kielar took part in the holiday photo opportunity at PPG Paints Arena.

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside PPG Paints Arena. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE Co-Owner

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE Chief Executive Officer & President

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is a native of the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Beechview.

JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager

Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach

Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach

Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach

Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. ‘MR. GAME ONE’ EARNED AN ETERNAL SPOT IN PENGUINS’ LORE Jason Seidling “What do you say we take this thing on down to the river, and party all summer?!” Those were the words that current Penguins radio broadcaster Phil Bourque exclaimed to the massive crowd standing in front of the stage at Point State Park following Pittsburgh’s first-ever Stanley Cup championship in 1991. ‘This thing’ of course wasn’t just any old thing, but rather the most coveted trophy in the world. e The words spoken by Bourque hat do you say w wn W “ do that spring afternoon couldn’t take this thing onparty be any more true — when a team to the river, and captures the Stanley Cup, the party literally lasts all summer. all summer?!” By now, Penguins fans are ~ Phil Bourque quite familiar with this concept, having watched the team add three more Cups, including last season’s victory, which seemed improbable at midseason. As impractical as it might have seemed in, oh let’s say, February, for the Penguins to win, winning would have been just as unlikely had Pittsburgh dropped Game One to the New York Rangers on April 13, 2016. That night, with the Penguins’ top-two netminders, Marc-Andre Fleury and Matt Murray, on the shelf, Jeff Zatkoff, the No. 3 goaltender who had logged all of 42 minutes since Feb. 20, was pressed into duty for the biggest start of his life. Zatkoff, despite the inactivity, was beloved by his teammates, although you might not have known it during the first 10 minutes when they continued on page 66

65

continued from page 65

allowed New York to pepper him with 11 shots, many of them high-quality. Zatkoff was up to the challenge, not just in the early minutes, but all night, turning away 35 of the 37 pucks the Rangers sent his way. The 5-2 win that night was important for two reasons. First, it gave the Penguins a series lead against the club that had eliminated them from the postseason dance each of the two previous years. Second, had Pittsburgh not won that night, it could have had to travel back to New York down 2-0 in the series after the Rangers came back to win Game Two. If that second scenario would have played out, the Penguins wouldn’t have won that round, let alone the Cup. Nobody knows this more so than the players and coaches who made up last year’s group. That’s why, in the waning hours of June 12 in the crammed visitor’s locker room at the SAP Center at San Jose, the entire team chanted “Mr. Game One! Mr. Game One! Mr. Game One!” while a smiling Zatkoff basked in the glory of his invaluable contribution. It’s also why on Nov. 3 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Phil Kessel, Fleury and Murray all took time from their pre-game rituals to visit Zatkoff — just minutes before game time — not long after GM Jim Rutherford and head Jeff coach Mike Sullivan ZATKOFF presented Zatkoff with his championship ring. When Zatkoff returns to Pittsburgh for the first time with the Los Angeles Kings this homestand, get on your feet and ensure that he knows how much this city appreciates his efforts. Because, and this can’t ever be stated enough, without him, there would be no 2016 Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. 66

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ELITE

MID-SEASON UPDATE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program is constantly working to improve and find new ways to develop their players. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex is home to one of the best youth hockey programs the U.S. has to offer. Every week brings a new challenge for each of the Penguins Elite teams, but that’s not a problem because the coaching staff has a lot of experience. We have some of the best hockey minds that the Western Pennsylvania community has to offer. Each team comes to the rink anywhere between three and five times a week, depending on their game schedules. One of those days is devoted to improving the players skating and skills, so they can advance onto something bigger and better. The Pittsburgh Penguins very own Ty Hennes (skills instructor) and Max Ivanov (power skating coach), work tirelessly to design specific plans for each team. This is a decision that was found to benefit not only the players but more importantly, the team as a whole. The coaches understand how much time needs to be taken in order to give the teams the best possible opportunity to succeed at the next level. As 2016 comes to a close, the Penguins Elite teams are approaching the mid-way of their seasons. The defending 2015-16 18U National Champions have gotten off to a great start this season going 23-6-3. They are already primed for a repeat with some of their top performers coming back this season, including goaltender, Chad Veltri. The 16U Penguins Elite girl’s squad has been one of the top performers for the organization thus far. They are off to an impressive start with a record of 19-1-4 in which they have beaten some of the top teams in the nation. They are now ranked fourth in the country and are looking to be the second Penguins Elite team to win a National Championship. Day-by-day the boys and girls of Penguins Elite are trying to develop as much as they can, both individually and as a team. As the teams work towards their ultimate goal of winning a national championship, we want to thank everyone involved in the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite organization for all the dedication and hard work put towards the athletes.

Penguins Profile:

BRYAN RUST

Mark Madden When the NHL started using the shootout to break ties in 2005, it provided the opportunity to take a penalty shot — before that, a rarity — with some frequency. But not Bryan Rust. Since the University of Notre Dame product made his NHL debut in 2014, Rust has yet to participate in a shootout. So, when Rust was awarded a penalty shot with 7:24 remaining in the third period against visiting Ottawa on December 5 with the Penguins holding a slim 6-5 lead, he was nervous. “My heart was probably racing faster than it did all game,” said Rust. “But that’s kind of my go-to move, and I stuck with it the whole way.” Rust’s “go-to move” saw him deke forehand, then sizzle a high backhand past Ottawa goaltender Craig Anderson on the stick side. The celebration was a bit nervy, too. When you score on a penalty shot, you’re alone on the ice except for the goalie you just beat. “I turned around, and I didn’t know exactly what to do at first,” said Rust. “But anytime you have the whole crowd cheering when you’re the only one out there, it’s fun.” A bit later, it got even better: Rust buried an empty-net goal with 2:28 remaining to register his first career NHL hat trick. Even that provided an anxious moment: Ottawa used a coach’s challenge to review the play, claiming that Rust was offside. Asked if he was nervous when the empty net (and hat trick) loomed large, Rust said, “A little bit. But I knew I had enough time to settle it down and put it in. I was a little bit more nervous when they were reviewing it.” The Penguins won, 8-5. It was rarefied air for Rust, who was named the game’s No. 1 star. The 5-foot-11, 192-pound right wing has provided plenty of energy and speed during his Penguins tenure. Rust had four goals and seven assists in 41 games during the 2015-16 regular-season, then followed that up with six goals and three assists in 23 playoff games as the Penguins won the Stanley Cup. Rust had four goals in three games at a very good time: Games Six and Seven of the Eastern Conference Final against Tampa Bay, and Game One of the Stanley Cup Final vs. San Jose. Rust had both goals in a 2-1 Game Seven victory over the Lightning. continued on page 79

continued from page 77

This year, the Michigan native had six goals and five assists in his first 25 games. Rust’s hat trick against Ottawa was his first at any level of hockey since Jan. 10, 2014 when he netted goals three times in Notre Dame’s 7-1 victory over Alabama-Huntsville. “It was more of a blowout,” Rust recalled. “The other team wasn’t as good. This game, I just found a way to get open in certain situations, and I was lucky enough to get a penalty shot.” Rust scored the first goal in the Penguins’ frenetic win over Ottawa: Evgeni Malkin made a nifty pass from the slot to find Rust breaking toward the right post. Rust executed a neat finish through Anderson’s pads. “That’s an unbelievable feed,” Rust said. “I yelled, but I don’t think [Malkin] heard me. He definitely saw me, and put it right on my tape, and I was able to put it in.” That night’s victory was part of a crazy stretch that saw the Penguins win five straight games while totaling 28 goals. That’s a lot of goals even if it’s not the dead-puck era. “Guys are just feeling it,” Rust said. “We’re building chemistry off each other. Guys are finding ways to get open, get the puck and put it in.” But the Penguins conceded five times against Ottawa, too. “Any time you score that many goals, you think you’re happy with it,” Rust said. “But we gave up too many chances. That’s part of our game we need to shore up a little bit.” The PPG Paints Arena crowd needs to work on its hat-trick celebration a bit, too. The numbers of hats that flew when Rust scored into the empty net was rather minimal. Perhaps that’s because the fans knew a review was coming? No, said Rust: “I just think they didn’t think I would get a hat trick.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as a blueprint for other NHL and professional organizations since its creation in 2010. In partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the program has helped reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes.

Since 2011, the Heads UP Pittsburgh has had great results in the youth sports community. nn Over 125,000 individual players, coaches, and parents have been impacted by the free baseline testing and educational programs nn Athletes in 30+ sports have been tested through funding from the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation nn Over 12,000 conditioning aids, including flexibility kits, neck strengthening kits, and core strength balance discs have been distributed nn New pediatric version of the baseline test targeted for athletes ages 7 to 9 is now available

In 2015, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit introduced the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation (PFF) STEAM Lending Library to schools districts in Allegheny County. This oneof-a-kind, first in the nation, program has given students the opportunity to explore technology that they may have never had access to otherwise. Stressing the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) learning in the region, the Library gives teachers the opportunity to borrow technology to use in their classrooms. The PPF STEAM Lending Library contains nearly 1,000 items, and to date, has impacted educators from 40 schools districts in Allegheny County.

Entering its third year, Tablets in Education has provided elementary students in 11 counties the opportunity to enhance their education through technology. Since its inception in 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has donated over 3,900 Kindle Fire tablets to over 200 school districts and special needs programs in the region; impacting over 100,000 students. Along with the support from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Tablets in Education continues to change the way students in our region learn. MIKE LANGE Penguins Radio Network Play-by-Play Announcer

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 42nd season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE Penguins Radio Network Color Analyst

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 14th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey. 111

HOCKEY ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1. DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2. NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game! 3. Keep your eyes on the puck! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area! 4. PPG Paints Arena is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited. 5. It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking! 6. Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun! 118

Since 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered to build a total of 12 dek hockey rinks for local communities through their unique Project Power Play program. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative that was designed to build one dozen dek rinks in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities over a four-year period. To support the program, Highmark provided $1.5 million in funding. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation also provided funding for the project. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities provided the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. The rinks are multi-purpose courts and are suitable for hockey and other sports; including, soccer and lacrosse. All rink sites were chosen based on a community’s need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming. Citiparks and local athletic associations continue to program the rinks, with the assistance from the Penguins organization.

SPECIAL TEAMS

EQUATION

Mike Prisuta

They entered the season with the proverbial “target on their back.” That’s the baggage associated with playing as the defending-Stanley Cup Champions. And that’s what the Penguins have been trying to navigate, a challenge that demands they respond to every opponent’s best night after night, even on nights when the Penguins aren’t necessarily at their Game Seven best in terms of urgency or intensity. “When you go through a playoff stretch, the emotional investment in that is high,” head coach Mike Sullivan observed. “That’s what it takes to succeed in the playoffs. It’s hard to go three and four rounds in the absence of it. “How that impacts teams after the fact, there’s a lot of discussion and debate about it in hockey circles. I think early in seasons, based on my experience, it can be a challenge to try to create that urgency that you need in order to have success.” The Penguins’ 18-7-3 record through their first 28 games and the ability they’d demonstrated to come back repeatedly when trailing after two periods and from two-goal deficits implied an understanding of what’s been required under the circumstances. Their stated intent heading into a visit to Tampa Bay on Dec. 10 had to improve their special teams and, thus, their night-in, night-out chances for even better success. “Special teams is an important aspect of the game,” Sullivan said. “Having said that, historically, I think special teams make up somewhere around 20 percent of play. So 80 percent of the game is even strength, that’s just ballpark. “But having said that, that 20 percent can be the difference. If you don’t win the special teams, you certainly don’t want to lose them. And I think it’s hard to sustain winning long term if you don’t shore up that aspect of the game. “We’re trying to make strides on both sides of the special-teams equation. We’ve worked on the power play a fair amount here over the last little while. We’ve worked on the penalty kill. We’ve tweaked some of the strategy on the penalty kill. We’re trying to be proactive and trying to help both sides of the special teams.” 148

Almost on cue, the Penguins went 3-for-4 on the power play in what became a 4-3 win over the Lightning. The Penguins hosted Arizona on Dec. 12 at No. 12 on the power play (19.6 percent) and No. 28 in penalty killing (76.0). “It’s a process and we have to work through it,” Sullivan said. “Our power play early in the season was winning games for us. The encouraging thing is the power play really hasn’t been as effective the last seven, eight, nine games (prior to meeting Tampa Bay). We’re still generating offense, scoring a fair amount of goals, and we’re winning games. Our guys are too good and they care too much for that to stay status quo. “I know we’re better than what we are on the power play, and we believe in these guys. We’ll work through it, we’ll try to simplify the process and get them more in an instinctive mindset. That’s when those guys are at their best.” A 5-1 victory at Florida on Dec. 8 featured the Penguins jumping out to a 3-0 first-period lead without the benefit of a power-play goal. continued on page 151

The Penguins, perhaps, weren’t at their best or their most intense that night, but they were more than good enough. “We defended well in our end and we were able to get in on the forecheck and cause some problems and create a lot of offense off the forecheck,” center Matt Cullen said. game’s “When we’re able to “I think our team tting more do that with all four getting better, geusly, we lines, that makes us consistent. Obvioconsistent. pretty dangerous.” need to be more to win Added defenseman Ian Cole: “We have You’d always like period, very talented guys every game, everyon but in this room that ver get scored e n can put the puck that’s something in the net, which is that obviously certainly helpful when the goals come few doesn’t and far between in happen.” the playoffs. ~ Ian Cole “I think our team game’s getting better, getting more consistent. Obviously, we need to be more consistent. You’d always like to win every game, every period, never get scored on but that’s something that obviously doesn’t happen.” When it doesn’t “keep working, keep getting better,” Cole said. “And in the meantime you have guys like ‘Rusty” (winger Bryan Rust) scoring hat tricks (in an 8-5 win over Ottawa on Dec. 5). “We’re in a good spot.”

When the college first opened its doors in 1966, 1,505 students took a chance on CCAC and eagerly registered for classes. This cohort of students were pioneers, and for many of them, CCAC was their only option for a college education. They embraced all CCAC had to offer and they worked together to not only develop a sense of community, but to also establish traditions for future students. Over the past 50 years, CCAC has continued to offer a vibrant beginning for students to gain the education, workforce training and skill-sets required to obtain quality and high-demand jobs in our region. Today, we educate more than 40,000 students annually at four campuses, four neighborhood centers and offsite locations throughout the region, and 96 percent of our graduates remain and work in the region. continued on page 163

Throughout 2016, we have celebrated our 50th Anniversary with a series of events and activities, and culminated our historic milestone with an anniversary gala in November. At our gala, we honored 50 Distinguished Alumni— including David Morehouse, the chief executive officer and president Quintin Bullock and Bob Mill of the Pittsburgh Penguins—for their outstanding professional, voluntary and philanthropic accomplishments. These alumni have played an important role in making the college a premier institution of higher education, and their stories truly display the transformative power of a CCAC education.

In the years ahead, we will continue to build upon the great work of the past five decades by developing up-to-the-minute workforce training opportunities and new and innovative academic programming. In order to accomplish these and other important goals, we will need the continued support of individuals and corporations in our region. The commitment of those who support CCAC is second to none, and funds raised during our 50th Anniversary celebration have endowed new scholarships to provide students with ever-growing opportunities for the next 50 years and beyond. CCAC offers degree and transfer programs, as well as noncredit career training and personal enrichment courses. For more information, please visit www.ccac.edu or call 412.237.3100. Classes begin January 12 and 26. 163

PENGUINS IN THE CLASSROOM …

TEACHING STEAM!

Chartiers Valley Middle School

Chartiers Valley Middle School’s STEAM classroom kicked off the school year with the Penguin’s Future Goals — Hockey Scholar program for a unit on how math intersects with the real world. Students greatly enjoyed the interactive simulations and game-like environment in which these lessons are taught. One student said, “I enjoy math. I enjoy hockey. It’s nice to see them used together in real life!” Many of the students are avid Penguins fans and this program has built off of that passion to make learning fun. Teachers enjoy the fact that lessons can be self-paced, allowing students who are advanced to go at a faster pace and students who need more time to move without being rushed. The review exams at the end of each section also give students immediate feedback on their learning progress. “I love how Future Goals makes real life connections to show us how math is used in real life settings all over the world,” said another STEAM class student. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of hockey while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. If you’re a 5th-8th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

ELF:

A SHORT STORY OF

A TALL TALE

Michelle Crechiolo

“SANTA! OH MY GOD! I KNOW HIM! I KNOW HIM!” That’s a memorable line from the movie Elf, and one Ian Cole said he has probably uttered “a few thousand times” since it came out. So it worked out perfect he was given that line to say during the Penguins’ annual holiday e-card shoot which re-created the film. “I was extremely excited,” Cole said. “Elf is one of my favorite Christmas movies. A movie that I’ve quoted quite often around the Christmas season, so very excited.” Two years ago, the team did National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989). Last year, they did Home Alone (1990). This year, they opted to fast forward as Elf wasn’t released until 2003. “We were looking at a bunch of movies for this holiday season, and we decided to use more of a modern classic,” said PensTV producer Mark Cottington, who again headed up the project with motion graphics design producer Dave Distilli. “Elf is a fan favorite for a lot of people. It just seemed like the natural thing to do.” The process was similar to last year’s, as they again took the original theatrical trailer 172

and built a new one off that featuring scenes from the movie. From there, they created a shot sheet and used that to figure out what exactly needed to go into each shot. Distilli then prepared composites and digital plates (basically backgrounds) for each shot so that he could layer the players in using ~ Ian Cole Adobe Photoshop and AfterEffects, while Cottington took care of getting the costumes and props. While some parts were easier this year, there were also new challenges as well. For example, they had to use blue screens instead of the usual green screens because of Buddy the Elf’s outfit, which is also green and would be hard to key out. But overall, the shoot was a tremendous success as everything went smooth production-wise — and the guys had a blast doing it. Fifteen different players took on the role of Buddy the Elf at some point: Cole, Sidney Crosby, Eric Fehr, Evgeni Malkin, Tom Kuhnhackl, Brian Dumoulin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Chris Kunitz, Justin Schultz, Patric Hornqvist, Nick Bonino, Matt Murray, Bryan Rust, Kris Letang and Tom Sestito. continued on page 175

Crosby had one of the funniest scenes as Buddy, as he got to do the snowball fight. To recreate it, Cottington threw a handful of coconut flakes at Crosby, who had to cover his face and exclaim, “Son of a nutcracker!” While Crosby got it on the first take, one of the cameramen requested a second one for audio purposes. “For audio’s sake, he says, eh?” Crosby laughed. “What a veteran.” “I think the very first throw, I said I apologize beforehand for what I’m about to do,” Cottington smiled. “He was great with it. We had to do two takes, which mortified me. I think I barely grazed him on the second one, so the first take was the one that was the winner and is being used.” “I don’t know how well I did it, but I’m glad it only took two (takes for each scene),” Crosby added. “We seem to have some good ones every year. I think it’s only been a couple years we’ve done this and this is a great movie to do it with. Just fun to see guys in different parts.” continued on page 176

One part that was perfectly cast was Matt Cullen as Buddy’s real father, Walter Hobbs, since his teammates lovingly call him Dad. Jim Rutherford was also fantastic as Buddy’s adopted father, Papa Elf. But the best role may have been Bill Guerin as Santa Claus. Guerin completely committed to the role. Not only did he dress in the full costume, complete with a red jacket, red pants, black belt and black boots — special effects makeup artist Nathan Blaine applied a white beard and painted his hair white to complete the look. And for that reason, Cottington gave him the Oscar for Best Actor. “I would have to say Billy G. because he fits the part perfectly,” Cottington said. “Spending the 45 minutes to put the beard on, the white through the hair, he sold the character well.” Guerin was just doing whatever he had to in order to nail the role and ensure a future in showbiz. “To date, it’s my biggest part,” Guerin said. “So I was very excited about it. Called my agent and he said it was the right part, would probably do a lot for my career. So I accepted.” Carl Hagelin also donned the Santa suit at one point — though he went with just a regular fake white beard — to play the Gimbel’s department store Santa. Rutherford’s son James filled in as Paul, the kid sitting on fake Santa’s lap in the scene where he fights with Buddy. And when Hagelin asked James what he wanted for Christmas, the youngster had the perfect answer. “I want the Penguins to win a Stanley Cup for a second time,” James said. Now that would be a great gift. 176
