Season Ticket Holder

SPOTLIGHT

With whom do you attend Penguins home games? My sister, kids and friends. My husband prefers to watch from home! What is your earliest memory of Penguins hockey? Attending a weekend afternoon game against the California Golden Seals late in the 1969-70 season. The roar of the crowd when the Penguins scored was an instant adrenaline rush, and I fell in love with the game immediately. Michel Briere scored a goal that day. I was seven, but I can remember that energy, that feeling, as if it were yesterday.

Penguins Season Ticket Holder

What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? I wanted to be a Penguins season ticket holder my whole life. When the opportunity arose, I took it. Aside from on-ice action, what do you enjoy most about attending Penguins games? The atmosphere and camaraderie among fans. What lesser known Penguins player (past or present) has left a lasting impression on you? What did he do to make that impression? It’s difficult to define “lesser known” as they have all seemed larger than Pam and her sister at Snapshots with Stanley. life to me. Wayne Bianchin comes to mind for his grit and determination in coming back to play hockey after suffering a broken neck. What is the most unique keepsake in your personal collection of Penguins memorabilia? I wrote a letter to the sports editor, published in “Sports Mailbag,” in support of Tom Barrasso in February of 1991, stating that he continued on page 15

would lead them to the Stanley Cup. Later that summer, after the first Cup win, I had the opportunity to meet Tom at an autograph signing event. He was wonderful, friendly and grateful, and he signed my copy of that letter in the paper for me. What non-Penguins player do you enjoy seeing on PPG Paints Arena ice? Henrik Lundqvist. When he’s on top of his game, he’s spectacular in net, and when he’s off his game, he’s very entertaining with his antics! What has been your favorite off-ice Penguins event to attend and why? I haven’t attended too many off ice events recently. Years ago, the team participated in a luncheon just before the season started, and every table had a Penguins player seated with them. My kids and I met several players during those years (early 2000’s, I believe), and it was great to talk to them about their lives outside of hockey. In your eyes, what makes the Pittsburgh Penguins, or hockey in general, great? I love most sports, but there’s something about hockey and its fans and the connection between the two that is unique, palpable and authentic. Outside Pam at Game Seven of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final of the sheer speed and skill in Detroit. that hockey players possess and the excitement and fast pace that is hockey’s hallmark, the connection is what makes the difference Pam’s children in their ugly Christmas sweaters at a game. for me. 15

The victory tied Tortorella with Toe Blake for No. 24 on the NHL’s all-time list, one ahead of Terry Murray. MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the arena. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE Co-Owner

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. It is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure– selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager

Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager

Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects, including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the 2016 championship run. MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach

Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach

Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach

Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES Goaltending Coach Mike Bales has established himself as one of the NHL’s top goaltending coaches during his first three seasons with the team. During the Penguins’ 2016 Stanley Cup championship drive, Pittsburgh used three goaltenders who thrived under his tutelage, including rookie Matt Murray, whose 15 playoff wins equaled the NHL rookie record. Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. MAATTA’S GAME

ROUNDS INTO FORM Jason Seidling

When the Penguins visited the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec. 17 at the Air Canada Centre, they went into the contest facing adversity for the first time in December. One night after hosting the Los Angeles Kings, one of the NHL’s toughest teams to play, the Penguins had to battle a rested Maple Leafs squad filled with young legs. Compounding the situation, Pittsburgh would be without the services of Kris Letang and Trevor Daley, both sidelined due to injury. Marc-Andre Fleury was the primary reason Pittsburgh earned a point that night before falling in overtime, 2-1, but right behind him had to be Olli Maatta, who performed admirably with increased responsibility. The stats sheet might not show it, but Maatta was solid for Pittsburgh all evening, combining exemplary work in his own zone with increased confidence offensively, joining or leading odd-man rushes several times, something he hadn’t done with much regularity this season. Against the Leafs, Maatta led the Penguins with six blocked shots in 19:17 minutes, while also pacing team blueliners with 4:41 shorthanded minutes, assuming a majority of the ice time there that Letang and Daley had vacated. “Obviously it’s a big difference and there is a big gap when you don’t have those two guys,” Maatta told reporters in the visitors locker room afterwards. “There isn’t just one guy who can jump in there because they are such good players, but I think we did an OK job.” continued on page 66

65

continued from page 65

Maatta was better than OK, especially on the PK, where his performance helped the Penguins establish a season high by making it four straight games without allowing an opposition power-play tally. A plethora of physical ailments — including a cancerous tumor and a bout with the mumps — have made the last two seasons a challenge for Maatta, who appeared poised to become one of the league’s top defenders after a stellar rookie campaign in 2013-14. Taking advantage of all of the attention being paid to the pairing of Justin Schultz and Ian Cole, Maatta has been able to quietly get his defensive game back on track. Heading into Pittsburgh’s Dec. 20 matchup with the New York Rangers, Maatta had been plus or even in 11 of 14 games, compiling a plus-6 during the span. At that point, his overall plus-10 for the season ranked fourth on the club, and third among defenders behind Schultz and Cole. Luckily for the Penguins, Maatta’s game began rounding into form at the perfect time, with Letang out ‘a couple of weeks’ and Daley injured ‘week to week’ according to head coach Mike Sullivan. Beginning with that Rangers matchup on Dec. 20, three of Pittsburgh’s six games heading into the team’s bye week from Jan. 1-7 came against New York, Columbus and Montreal, the top-three teams in the Eastern Conference outside of the Penguins. Maatta sounded up to challenge. “It’s going to be hard because it’s a tough league,” Maatta described when asked about the schedule ahead. “This isn’t any easy league. . . We just need to make sure we bring our A-game.”

OUTDOOR HOCKEY

BECOMING A TRADITION

IN PITTSBURGH

With the 2017 Stadium Series game coming to the steel city in February, this marks the second time the city has hosted a game, and the fourth time participating in an outdoor event. Previously, the Penguins have faced Buffalo, Washington and Chicago in outdoor games that have each drawn 40,000+ plus attendees. This year the state of Pennsylvania will have its ultimate rivalry tested as the Flyers look to spoil Pittsburgh’s 50th year celebration. Over the past 50 years, the Penguins and the Flyers have each grown a deeply rooted fan base that is both loyal and proud of their heritage and history in the NHL. Combining for a total of six Stanley Cups, the two teams have shown their respective cities how to build these communities from the ground up. Now with Pennsylvania playing host once again, we see the change in the landscape of hockey come out of the shadows of the Penguins and Flyers. In Pittsburgh, outdoor hockey has become increasingly popular with four outdoor rinks available to the public. PPG Place, North Park, South Park, and Schenley Park make up the four community rinks where you can find programs and events suitable to every need. Given the hotbed of hockey talent that has emerged recently, giving the public access to the game in its natural habitat seems to grow every year. From pond hockey events to the big stage, this winter is sure to be a productive one for the hockey community and last year’s championship team. This year’s Little Penguins program will utilize over 25 area rinks, including the North Park and South Park locations. This, along with other programs, allows youngsters and their families an opportunity usually only available in colder climates and aims to grow the game at an earlier age. With the stage being set for Feb. 25, the city of Pittsburgh hopes the community is ready for what’s to come for our great hockey town. 70

Penguins Profile:

JUSTIN SCHULTZ

Mark Madden After the Penguins beat visiting Boston, 4-3 in overtime Dec. 14, defenseman Justin Schultz described his first-period goal thusly: “Sid gave me a lay-up.” Uh, not really. The aforementioned Sid (Crosby) undoubtedly made a great cross-rink pass to find Schultz coming late. But Schultz applied a sublime finish, snapping a wrist shot under goalie Tuukka Rask’s right arm from the top of the right circle to forge a 1-1 tie. For Schultz, the night was young. He later posted two assists, the most noteworthy coming on Bryan Rust’s goal 1:24 into extra time. Schultz fired a long bank pass from behind his goal line to Evgeni Malkin at the far blue line. Malkin collected, and then fed Rust for a backhand swat into the net to end the game. Again, modesty from Schultz: “Geno and Rusty made a great play in overtime.” Humility can be a by-product of confidence, and that might be the case with Schultz. His performance against Boston was part of the best sustained stretch of play in Schultz’s five-season NHL career. As of that victory over Boston, Schultz had posted 12 points in eight games, including four goals. Schultz was plus-12 in those games, bringing his season total to plus-18, second-best in the NHL as of Dec. 16. “His offensive production is obvious. It’s on the scoresheet,” said coach Mike Sullivan. “But the coaching staff has been really encouraged by his overall game.” Schultz’s confidence certainly showed in his play, and occasionally in his verbiage. “It’s amazing how that changes,” Schultz said after helping vanquish the Bruins. “This time last year, I had no confidence. Now, pucks are going in. I’m waiting that extra second with the puck. I feel really good.” This time last year, the 6-foot-1, 196-pound British Columbia native was languishing with the Edmonton Oilers, Schultz’s only NHL team before he joined the Penguins in exchange for a third-round draft pick this past Feb. 27. Edmonton was struggling, headed for a last-place finish in the Western Conference. Schultz was minus-22 in 45 games last season with the Oilers. But Schultz, 26, turned things around upon arriving in Pittsburgh: He had continued on page 79

a goal, seven assists and a plus-7 mark in 18 regular-season games with the Penguins. He had four assists and went plus-1 in 15 playoff games. Schultz played every game of the Stanley Cup Final against San Jose. There were anxious moments for Schultz, including a few healthy scratches. But the result was a Stanley Cup ring, followed by a superb start to the current season. Part of Schultz’s success can be tied to his tandem on defense with Ian Cole. Schultz and Cole have performed well beyond expectations for a bottom pair, so much so that it’s debatable whether they’re still a bottom pair. “We just talk through everything,” Schultz said of partnering with Cole. “After every shift, we talk about what we can do better, and what we see out there. It helps a lot. We help each other a lot.” Schultz was asked if he’d ever produced this much. Again, that modesty: “Not in the NHL. I mean, I didn’t do much for some of those points.” As previously noted, Sullivan’s satisfaction with Schultz goes beyond points: “He’s quietly playing real effectively for us at both ends of the rink,” Sullivan said. “He’s helping us offensively in the last few weeks, and it’s helping us get wins. We’ve been really encouraged with his overall game. “He’s using his skills to defend, and help us get out of our end. He’s got a good stick. He’s smart. He can use his brain to outsmart people. He’s got quickness and stick skills, and he doing all that at both ends of the rink.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

Larouche was taken by the Penguins eighth overall in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft. He scored 31 goals and a rookie-leading 68 points in his first season to take home the franchise’s Michel Briere Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year. In his second season in Pittsburgh, the center nicknamed ‘Lucky Pierre’ became the youngest player in NHL history to score 50 goals and 100 points in a season — a record that stood until Wayne Gretzky broke into the league. Larouche also held the records for youngest player to score 100 career goals and 200 career points. Larouche — who was a fan favorite during his time here — is now the liason of partnership sales for the Penguins. 93

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as a blueprint for other NHL and professional organizations since its creation in 2010. In partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the program has helped reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes.

Since 2011, the Heads UP Pittsburgh has had great results in the youth sports community. n Over 125,000 individual players, coaches, and parents have been impacted by the free baseline testing and educational programs n Athletes in 30+ sports have been tested through funding from the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation n Over 12,000 conditioning aids, including flexibility kits, neck strengthening kits, and core strength balance discs have been distributed n New pediatric version of the baseline test targeted for athletes ages 7 to 9 is now available

In 2015, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit introduced the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation (PFF) STEAM Lending Library to schools districts in Allegheny County. This oneof-a-kind, first in the nation, program has given students the opportunity to explore technology that they may have never had access to otherwise. Stressing the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) learning in the region, the Library gives teachers the opportunity to borrow technology to use in their classrooms. The PPF STEAM Lending Library contains nearly 1,000 items, and to date, has impacted educators from 40 schools districts in Allegheny County.

Entering its third year, Tablets in Education has provided elementary students in 11 counties the opportunity to enhance their education through technology. Since its inception in 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has donated over 3,900 Kindle Fire tablets to over 200 school districts and special needs programs in the region; impacting over 100,000 students. Along with the support from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Tablets in Education continues to change the way students in our region learn. MIKE LANGE Penguins Radio Network Play-by-Play Announcer

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 42nd season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE Penguins Radio Network Color Analyst

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 14th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey. 111

JOSH GETZOFF Radio Broadcast Host and PensTV Host

Josh Getzoff is in his second season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the sports director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Getzoff covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, he was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Getzoff has also worked as a sports anchor/reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. HOCKEY ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.

DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea!

118

2.

NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!

3.

Keep your eyes on the puck! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!

4.

The arena is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

5.

It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!

6.

Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

Since 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered to build a total of 12 dek hockey rinks for local communities through their unique Project Power Play program. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative that was designed to build one dozen dek rinks in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities over a four-year period. To support the program, Highmark provided $1.5 million in funding. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation also provided funding for the project. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities provided the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. The rinks are multi-purpose courts and are suitable for hockey and other sports; including, soccer and lacrosse. All rink sites were chosen based on a community’s need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming. Citiparks and local athletic associations continue to program the rinks, with the assistance from the Penguins organization.

HAPPY VALLEY

Mike Prisuta Penn State emerged from a victory over Michigan in early December looking at more than a month off until next taking the ice on Jan. 6 at Ohio State. The Nittany Lions had certainly earned a break. The sweep-completing, 5-1 victory over the Wolverines on Dec. 2 pushed Penn State’s overall record to 13-1-1 and Penn State’s winning percentage to a nation’s-best .900. The Nittany Lions were also in possession of the nation’s longest unbeaten streak at 13 consecutive games (12-0-1), a run that included 11 wins in succession. Among Penn State’s victims were then-No. 20 Michigan (twice), then-No. 16 St. Lawrence and then-No. 3 Notre Dame at Notre Dame. “We have good players, that’s the biggest thing,” head coach Guy Gadowsky assessed in an interview on gopsusports.com. “They’re playing really well and they love to play together.” What the Nittany Lions love to do most of all is score goals. They’ve also learned how to defend. In the collegehockeystats.net weekly release on Dec. 19, Penn State ranked No. 1 in the nation in scoring offense at 4.87 goals per game. The Nittany Lions were also No. 3 in scoring defense at 1.87 goals per game, No. 1 in scoring margin (plus 3.00 goals per game), No. 9 on the power play (22.7 percent) and No. 1 in penalty killing (92.5 percent). Penn State was ranked No. 3 and received four first-place votes in the Dec. 12 USCHO.com Top 20, the highest ranking the program had achieved since resurrecting varsity hockey as a Division I Independent in 2012-13. The Nittany Lions won eight games the following season (8-26-2), their first competing in the Big Ten Conference. They progressed to 18-15-4 in 2014-15 and to 21-13-4 last season. 148

SAAR

The addition of 10 freshmen to this year’s roster has included first-year difference-makers on a national scale. Among them: Forward Denis Smirnov — His 27 points (10+17) in 15 games had Smirnov ranked third in the nation in points per game (1.80), tied for No. 18 in goals per game (0.67) and No. 3 in assists per game (1.13). Smirnov’s 1.80 pointsper-game average was tops among NCAA freshmen. Forward Nate Sucese — His 14 points (8+6) in 14 games stood 11th nationally among freshmen. And goaltender Peyton Jones — He was No. 6 in goals-against average (1.97), No. 15 in save percentage (.920) and No. 1 in winning percentage (11-0-1, .958) as of Dec. 19. The eight-player sophomore class had also been heard from with regularity. Forward Andrew Sturtz’s 13 goals in 13 games led the national in goals per game (1.00). Forward Chase Berger was tied for No. 21 in the nation in power-play goals (four). And defenseman Vince Pedrie was No. 15 among blueliners in points per game (5+8 in 15 games, 0.87). continued on page 151

Junior defenseman Trevor Hamilton was even better than Pedrie in that category, checking in at tied for No. 4 in the nation (3+12 in 15 games, 1.00 per). Penn State’s roster also includes Penguins’ 2015 seventh-round draft pick and freshman forward Nikita Pavlychev (3+5 through 13 games) and Upper St. Clair’s Matt Mendelson (a sophomore forward who was scoreless in one appearance through Penn State’s first 13 games). Pavlychev is hard to miss at 6-foot-7 and 212 pounds. He attended the Penguins’ development camp last summer, one of five current Nittany Lions that went camping in such a fashion (Berger — Detroit, freshman forward Brandon Biro — Edmonton, Pedrie — Anaheim, and sophomore forward Zach Saar — Ottawa). It’s all added up to the type of team Gadowsky has been working to build at Penn State. “We have a lot of depth and that’s really what we’ve been shooting for,” he said. “We’ve said all along, when we can achieve that we’re pretty tough to play against. We tend to play a very high-tempo game and play to get a lot of offense. And when you’re rolling lines and they’re all playing that way it’s really tough to play against as a whole. “You can’t key on one line, you can’t get a rest, and right now I think we have that.” 151

OPERATION SHOEBOX

BRIGHTENING THE HOLIDAYS FOR SENIORS Staff members from all departments of the Penguins’ organization donated beautifully wrapped shoebox presents for the Christmas holiday to the senior residents at Concordia of Franklin Park in Sewickley. Over 50 shoebox gifts were collected by the Penguins Foundation as team staffers filled their empty shoeboxes with a continued on page 163

variety of gifts suited towards the seniors’ lifestyle at Concordia. Shoe box gifts were filled with newly purchased items including comforters, slippers, socks, stationary, books, games, lotions, candy, cookies and holiday ornaments. Each box was marked for either a male or female as all gifts were anonymous. Dec. 19 marked the ninth consecutive year that Penguins front office personnel have delivered shoebox gifts to senior living facilities in the Pittsburgh area, making the holidays a little brighter for those missing family and friends.

Operation Shoebox was a huge success and a great time was had by all! 163

PENGUINS IN THE CLASSROOM …

TEACHING STEAM!

Chartiers Valley Middle School

Chartiers Valley Middle School’s STEAM classroom kicked off the school year with the Penguin’s Future Goals — Hockey Scholar program for a unit on how math intersects with the real world. Students greatly enjoyed the interactive simulations and game-like environment in which these lessons are taught. One student said, “I enjoy math. I enjoy hockey. It’s nice to see them used together in real life!” Many of the students are avid Penguins fans and this program has built off of that passion to make learning fun. Teachers enjoy the fact that lessons can be self-paced, allowing students who are advanced to go at a faster pace and students who need more time to move without being rushed. The review exams at the end of each section also give students immediate feedback on their learning progress. “I love how Future Goals makes real life connections to show us how math is used in real life settings all over the world,” said another STEAM class student. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of hockey while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. PENGUINS SPREAD

HOLIDAY CHEER AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Bryanna McDermott Seven-year-old Addison didn’t blink an eye when Sidney Crosby stepped into her room at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. “Hey, ‘Sid,’” she casually said as the captain knelt down to hand her gifts and look at the gingerbread man ornament she was painting. Crosby and the rest of the Penguins made their annual visit to Children’s Hospital on Dec. 15, a tradition they’ve upheld since the late 1970s, trading hockey helmets for Santa hats to spread a little holiday cheer to the patients and their families. The players split up into four groups to visit as many rooms as possible, bearing gifts of NHL mascot blankets, stuffed penguins, Penguins’ Yearbooks and Amazon Echo Dots. Accompanying Crosby were Eric Fehr, Olli Maatta and Marc-Andre Fleury. They were all equally impressed by little Addison’s art skills, but were more curious by the black Mustang power wheels sitting in the corner of the room. “Do they let you drive that out in the hallway?” Fleury asked. “Do you go fast?” The answer? Yes, she’s allowed to drive her car in the hallways, but only on the lowest speed. Later, Maatta and teenage patient, Virginia, discussed their love of the Netflix show Shameless. “Don’t you dare!” Maatta warned when Crosby tried to get Virginia to give spoilers, since the Finnish native is only on Season Three. Playing a game of NHL with some Stanley Cup Champions is a 13-year-old’s dream, but for Cameron it was a reality. As the group entered Cameron’s room, they looked at the television screen. The score was Toronto Maple Leafs 4, Penguins 0. “Looks like we lost today, boys,” Fehr chirped. The main reason the virtual Penguins lost according to Cameron was because the goalie kept jumping out of the way. “Sometimes the pucks hurt!” Fleury justified. Teenager, Sean, was supposed to be discharged the day before, but due to a fever had to remain in the hospital. While he was upset that he couldn’t go home, the Penguins visit made him feel a whole lot better. continued on page 175

“I was really surprised,” Sean said. “I wasn’t supposed to be here today. I was supposed to be gone yesterday. I wanted to go home, but I heard the Penguins were coming, so I decided I was going to make the most of it.” Sean also had his entire family on hand for the event. His parents, brother and sisters crowded around for an unforgettable family photo. “It’s heartening that these guys take the time out of their day to come here and meet a child who’s not doing really well right now,” Sean’s dad Rich said. “It’s a special bunch of guys and we appreciate it. We really do. As parents when you see people go out of their way to help you, they make you feel better. Today Sid, Eric, Olli and Marc-Andre made it a really great day.” The group of Justin Schultz, Brian Dumoulin, Patric Hornqvist and Matt Cullen were also a hit among the children. Dumoulin even met another Brian, this one only nine years old, who paused his video game to give the players some major hi-fives as they entered the room. Cullen was especially interested in the game, which featured a collection of Marvel characters. “Good luck, take him down,” Cullen told Brian after he explained how he couldn’t beat the latest villain. The Hornqvist family may be getting a little bigger after Patric got to hold four-month-old Skyra. “Maybe it’s time for another one,” Hornqvist joked as they left the room. “Don’t tell my wife that!” continued on page 176

Five-year-old Vishali couldn’t even wait for the players to make it to her room. She stood at her doorway as the group walked down the hall, squealing “Penguins!” The patients and their families enjoyed the special visit, which gave them brief moments of distraction from some difficult times. Many of the Penguins players have children of their own, making the annual tradition a little more heartwarming. “It’s very easy for us to come over and spend some time with them,” said Fleury, who has two daughters. “It’s such a small gesture. They’re going through so much, I’m glad we could make them smile a little bit and give them a souvenir. I think it makes you realize how lucky you are and your family are to be healthy. These young kids are such good fighters; they have good spirits. It’s nice to see.” “It’s important,” Crosby said. “I think it’s the least we can do. In a lot of cases, they’re fans of the team and fans of the guys, so we’re just happy we get to meet them. A lot of kids and their families don’t get to spend Christmas at home and aren’t going to be around all their family and friends, so hopefully we can have a good time with them, have some laughs, and change their mind a bit.” 176
