AROUND THE NHL
By: Mike Prisuta
THE STEPAN EFFECT: A unique aspect of the Rangers’ 22-14-5 record through 41 games was New York having earned at least a point in the last 23 games during which C Derek Stepan had scored a goal, dating back to March 13, 2014 (19-0-4). The Rangers also had a record of 30-1-4 in the last 35 games at home during which Stepan had found the net, dating back to the start of the 2011-12 season.
3,000 AND COUNTING: Boston became the second team in NHL history to reach the 3,000-win plateau with a 4-1 victory on Jan. 8 at New Jersey. The Bruins (3,000-2,281-791-140 all-time in 6,212 games) joined the Montreal Canadiens in the 3,000-win club.
RECORDTYING FIRST HALF: The Los Angeles Kings’ 26 wins through 41 games (26-12-3) tied the franchise record for wins in the first half of a season (1980-81). LA’s 55 points through 41 games were the third-most in franchise history.
10
FRESHMAN SENSATION: Red Wings C Dylan Larkin became just the third Detroit rookie to be selected to play in the NHL All-Star Game (Steve Yzerman in 1984, Reed Larson in 1978). Glenn Hall (1955), Norm Ullman (1955), Marcel Pronovost (1950) and Terry Sawchuk (1950) also took part as rookies when the All-Star Game format consisted of All-Stars taking on the NHL’s defending champions.
STREAKING PANTHERS: Florida extended its franchise-record winning streak to 12 consecutive games with a 2-1 win over Edmonton on Jan. 10. The Panthers allowed an NHL-low 15 goals in the 12 games and outscored opponents 38-15. The 12-game run was the longest winning streak in the NHL this season and the longest in NHL history compiled by a team that didn’t make the playoffs the previous season. Florida set a franchise record with six consecutive road wins during the streak.

Evgeni Malkin had the lone goal for the Penguins on the power play early in the second period. . . Prior to Jan. 12, Carolina has won two straight against the Penguins and four of the last six. The Hurricanes have won three of their last four games here in Pittsburgh, outscoring the Penguins, 11-6. In those four games, Carolina’s power play is 5-for-11 (45.4 percent), while the Penguins are 1-for-7 (14.2 percent). . . Pittsburgh has received three or fewer power play chances in 11 of its last 12 home games against Carolina. . . The Penguins had been 0-for-15 on the power play in their last seven games against the Hurricanes prior to Malkin’s tally on Dec. 19. . . This is the second game in six days between the teams, as they met in Raleigh on Jan. 12. . . THE SERIES [VS] FLYERS
On Jan. 21 the Penguins meet their rival Philadelphia Flyers for the first time this season. It marks the latest date into a full season that the teams have ever played their first game. Previously their latest initial matchup into any season was on Jan. 8 of the 1999-2000 campaign. . . Pittsburgh has lost eight consecutive games against Philadelphia (0-6-2), its longest since dropping 11 straight Dec. 12, 1982 through March 28, 1984. The Penguins’ last victory over the Flyers came in Philadelphia on Oct. 17, 2013 (4-1). . . The Penguins have lost five straight regular season home games to the Flyers (0-4-1); they have never dropped six straight. Since moving to CONSOL Energy Center, Pittsburgh is 2-10-1 at home against the Flyers and has won three of 16 total games against them when post-season games are included. The Penguins’ last home win over Philadelphia came on March 24, 2013 (2-1) on a Tyler Kennedy overtime goal. . . Sidney Crosby has more goals (31) against Philadelphia than any other team and averages 1.46 points per game against them (31+45 in 52 games). . . THE PENGUINS
The Penguins’ game here against Carolina on Jan. 17 is their third afternoon game of the season and first at home. They dropped afternoon games in Los Angeles and Anaheim earlier this season. Pittsburgh’s most recent home afternoon game was a 3-2 win over Arizona last March 28. The Penguins have lost 13 of their last 17 afternoon games, including six of their last nine at home. . . Bryan Rust scored his first goal of the season, the game-winner, in a 3-1 win at Montreal on Jan. 9 in his first game since a recall from the AHL . . . Tom Kuhnhackl, like Rust drafted in 2010, made his NHL debut in that win over the Canadiens. He is the sixth Germanborn player to skate for the Penguins, joining Thomas Greiss, Marcel Goc, Christian Ehrhoff, Sven Butenschon and Randy Gilhen. . . The victory over Montreal left the Penguins one point out of a playoff spot at the halfway point of the season. . . After missing eight games with a concussion, Marc-Andre Fleury returned to the lineup and allowed only eight goals while making four consecutive starts.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE KEEPSAKE IN YOUR PERSONAL COLLECTION OF PENGUINS MEMORABILIA? The only 1967 home blue game worn Penguins jersey outside of the Hockey Hall of Fame. It is #1 worn by goaltender Hank Bassen during the first ever Penguins game vs. Montreal when Jean Beliveau scored his 400th goal. It was handed down to the University of Pittsburgh along with the rest of the blue ’67 home jerseys. It’s the only one left in existence, except for a #19 donated to the Hockey Hall of Fame by the Penguins back in the late 60s. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? In ‘91, I was in the sixth grade watching at home on KBL. In ‘92, I was also watching at home when the Penguins polished off the Blackhawks in four. In 2009, I was in front of my TV in Bethel Park with close friends... chewing my nails off. I was a nervous wreck all day prior to the game. I mowed my grass up until five minutes before the puck dropped, just because I had to stay busy to not lose my mind with anticipation. IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS, OR HOCKEY IN GENERAL, GREAT? There are so many life lessons to be learned from hockey; sportsmanship, winning and losing, Game Seven mentality, never giving up, keeping your head up and winning a game shift by shift. It’s the greatest game on earth and a metaphor for life.

PENGUINS PROFILE
KRIS
LETANG By: Mark Madden
28
Kris Letang caught fire after returning from injury on Dec. 26: Three goals and eight assists in his first seven games back. To him, the formula is simple. “Healthy always works. Just being in the lineup,” said Letang, unfortunately plagued by various maladies during the second half of his career to date. “And I think it’s simplifying things. Being under control. Having a steady partner, and not switching partners every two games. It’s fun to create some chemistry.” Olli Maatta, also a frequent injury victim, is the partner mentioned. He and Letang have formed an excellent No. 1 defense tandem. Letang’s explosion upon returning to the ice did much to earn him a spot in the NHL’s All-Star 3-on-3 tournament, which takes place Jan. 31 at Nashville. “It’s fun to see my name on that list,” Letang said. After 32 games, Letang had four goals and 21 assists. He ranked sixth in points-per-game among NHL defensemen at 0.78. Letang is scary in a 3-on-3 situation. He’s proven that when NHL regular-season games go to overtime, and should provide an electrifying performance at Nashville. “I can’t wait to see how it’s going to turn out,” Letang said. “It’s been exciting for everybody in the regular season. I can’t wait to see it in an all-star format.” One of the Penguins’ most memorable games of the current campaign took place on Jan. 5 at CONSOL Energy Center when the Penguins fell to Chicago in overtime, 3-2. Letang had a goal and assist. His shot from high along the left boards found its way through a screen into the net with 2:50 left in regulation, forcing a very exciting OT. The Penguins and Blackhawks each had five shots in overtime, and the goalies (Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury and Chicago’s Corey Crawford) each made a series of great saves. Artemi Panarin won it for Chicago 3:47 into OT. When asked if overtime was fun, Letang laughed and said, “It was fun when we were in their zone. Until they started having the puck. “We were there for a minute in their zone and we were creating a lot, but we expended a lot of energy. They got one break, they went the other way, and it was tough [for us] to recover. [Panarin] made a really good shot.” continued on page 31
29
ROOT SPORTS PERM
continued from page 29
Three-on-three OT seems to be about catching foes with tired players on the ice. “I would say so, yeah,” Letang agreed. “If you don’t score one way, it’s coming the other way, and they’re going to score. Their goalie made great saves on that last shift, and they capitalized on one shot.” Letang was nonetheless happy with the Penguins earning a point against the reigning Stanley Cup champions. “That’s a team that’s really good with the puck,” Letang said. “They wear you down by controlling the game, having the puck on their sticks, and they’re scary offensively. It was a great point, well-deserved. We’d rather have two, but that’s the way it is. “I think our effort was outstanding. We created a lot of chances. A lot more quality scoring chances than they had. They got a couple lucky bounces that went in the goal. But they played an awesome game. They win Stanley Cups for a reason.” Letang chuckled when discussing his goal, a shot that had eyes. It came off a faceoff win by Sidney Crosby and was one of seven shots on goal by Letang. “I didn’t shoot that figuring it would go in,” Letang that. “Often, it gets blocked or it gets saved. You create a rebound, or something. To go directly in, I was surprised. “We were going for a different play, and the puck bobbled over my stick. So I just turned, I was looking at the net, there was traffic, so I just took the shot.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to nine straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. PENGUINS WIVES ASSOCIATION WRAPS-UP BUSY MONTH SPREADING
HOLIDAY CHEER
This holiday season, the Penguins’ wives and girlfriends were busy raising funds and purchasing gifts for those less fortunate in the Pittsburgh area. Since 2006, the ladies have hosted an online holiday auction for the benefit of a local charity. Each wife or girlfriend created a holiday basket that was highlighted with their significant others’ favorite things. Over the past two years, proceeds from the ladies’ Holiday Basket Auction have benefitted Blessings in a Backpack, a program that supplies non-perishable food items to feed underprivileged children over the weekend when school meals are not available. In addition, the ladies participated in Adopt-A-Family for the Holidays for the second consecutive season and made Christmas much merrier for underprivileged families. Wives and girlfriends of the coaches, players and hockey operations staff each selected a child, children or a family to present with holiday gifts. When all shopping was completed, the ladies had provided gifts for 22 families for the holidays. Large Santa sacks were overflowing with wrapped Christmas presents and dropped off at CONSOL Energy Center for delivery before Christmas. The families for this program were screened and selected by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit 3 (AIU3) and hailed from a variety of Pittsburgh communities. Next on the ladies’ agenda will be the annual Pens & Pins Bowling Tournament scheduled for February 25 with proceeds benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

CATCHING UP WITH
TROY
JOSEPHS By Joseph Guzy
WHEN YOU WERE DRAFTED YOU SAID, ‘IT’S JUST CRAZY. IT STILL REALLY HASN’T SUNK IN YET.’ HOW HAVE YOU BEEN PREPARING YOURSELF SINCE THEN? It’s been a humbling experience. Not a lot of people can say they’ve been drafted. Thinking about it is still funny. It was an unbelievable moment for me and my family. Right now I’m just trying to become a pro. I just want to take everything in and be mature about it. I’m sort of one of the older guys now on the team [at Clarkson University] so I just want to be someone they look up to and just move forward with that. YOU’VE BEEN TO PENGUINS DEVELOPMENT CAMPS IN THE PAST. WHAT DID YOU TAKE FROM THIS YEAR’S IN PARTICULAR? Every year I always want to try and take away some stuff from the older guys there. Being my third year, I’m sort of one of the older guys now. I just want them to look up to me and just be able to talk to me. Coming into the season I just wanted to be professional. Move forward with my process in hockey and just try and get better every day. YOU SCORED THE LONE GOAL FOR CLARKSON IN THEIR 5-1 LOSS TO PENN STATE AT CONSOL Energy Center IN THE 2015 THREE RIVERS CLASSIC. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO ACTUALLY BURY ONE HERE? It was a great feeling. Being here at CONSOL Energy Center, it definitely sunk in that way. It’s an unbelievable environment and place to be and hopefully a future home for me. But I’ve also been fighting the puck a lot. It was only my second goal of the season, so it was good to get the monkey off my back again and just move forward with it. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST THREE RIVERS CLASSIC EXPERIENCE LIKE? It was unreal. It was first class. I wouldn’t have expected anything less, of course. Pittsburgh always does it right. Can’t say anything but good things about it.

PENGUINS DEVELOPING AMATEUR
HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy
The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

TRIB PERM
continued from page 93
All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the team. Designed to sell remaining game day inventory, the Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2015-16 season, an estimated 200 Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. Eligible students have access to purchase these tickets through an exclusive, day of game, online pre-sale. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text also includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several games have been designated special Student Rush nights. For these games, at least 500 tickets will be available online! For more information on the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush program, the terms and conditions and a schedule of special Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush. HOCKEY
ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:7.5”
HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. For more information about Heads UP Pittsburgh and testing locations, visit our website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

CULLEN INSPIRED, MOTIVATED BY FAMILY By: CJ Harvey
Matt Cullen I was lucky to play has never been in consideration for league in Minnesota and a few MVP or any other major other hockey towns, but awards, but he does have a Stanley Cup getting back to a real and 18 years of NHL hockey town is great. experience under his Matt Cullen belt, and Pittsburgh fans are starting to understand how he’s stayed around. The Minnesota native broke into the league in 1996 when he was drafted by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Since then the vet has skated all around the league, and even spent time in Italy during the 2004-05 lockout. Now, Cullen finds himself in Pittsburgh with his eighth NHL team, and at the back end of his career, the 39-year-old couldn’t be happier. “I really like everything about it,” Cullen said. “It’s been a great experience coming here and not really knowing what to expect. I have three young boys, so for my family to be here in a hockey town like Pittsburgh is pretty cool for all of us. I was lucky to play in Minnesota and a few other hockey towns, but getting back to a real hockey town is great.” continued on page 131

“The organization itself really stands out. It’s as first class as they come, and I’ve been in some great organizations — not to take anything away from anyone — but the way they operate things here is first class.” Cullen has a tight connection with Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford, as they won the Stanley Cup together with Carolina in 2006. But the real question remains, why does a player who’s already won a Stanley Cup find the motivation to keep playing? “It’s a cliché, but I really just love playing the game,” Cullen said. “I still get excited for games, but I think one of the things that’s rejuvenated me are my boys, because they get excited and into it.” “I think it’s a blessing that I get to play and have my kids in the stands watching. Whether they say ‘great goal,’ or are critiquing me after a game, they’re the sort of thing that drives me to play.” Cullen’s three kids have been his major motivation to stick around the league year after year. Because hockey was such a major part of his life, he wants to pass along a similar experience to his children. “My boys are getting to the age where they’re big into hockey,” Cullen said. “They watch it every day. So being in a hockey town is a big deal. They’re actually hockey crazy, and luckily there aren’t many hockey towns better than this.” But Cullen’s hockey roots run even deeper than through just his kids. Cullen’s father Terry was his varsity coach at Moorhead Senior High, and brothers Mark and Joe both still play professional hockey. continued on page 132

As close as he is with his brothers, it was his father who left the lasting impact. “He did a lot for me,” said Cullen. “He actually took time to teach me different things about the game. Hockey is a great sport that has so many opportunities to learn, and he taught me so much about it. So watching my kids love it, makes me love it.” “Even today, my dad still watches my games. If I’m struggling, he’ll give me some tips.” Cullen said he enjoys bringing his kids to the rink to skate. “They love to skate a lot at the [UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex] and they’re always down at a lot of the games, so it’s been a pretty great experience for all of my family,” he said. Although his kids are the forefront of his life, retirement has been at the top of Cullen’s mind for a while. Yet he goes through the same process heading into every season. “I go home in the summer and think maybe the fire disappeared,” Cullen said. “But it hasn’t yet. “I went home last summer thinking I might be done, but decided I still loved playing. My body is holding up and my legs are good enough to skate, so I’m still having fun with it.” This season, Cullen has become an integral part of the Penguins’ penalty kill — even scoring a shorthanded goal in a 5-2 win over the New York Islanders on Jan. 2 — while being a tremendous veteran mentor to the younger guys in the locker room. Penguins fans certainly appreciate Cullen’s dedication. “Obviously as an older guy, you try to bring that perspective to the locker room and on the ice,” Cullen said. “I have and can play a few roles, so I think that makes me a valuable part of the team.”

PENGUINS FIND FOOTING,
GAINING GROUND UNDER SULLIVAN By: Dave Uhrmacher
When head coach Mike Sullivan addressed the media following the Dec. 19 loss to Carolina, questions were swirling as to which way his team was trending. Four games into Sullivan’s tenure, the Penguins were stuck in neutral, searching for win number one under their new coach. A 4-1 loss in Sullivan’s debut versus Washington followed by back-to-back losses to Boston put Pittsburgh 15 points behind Metropolitan Division-leading Washington and only five points ahead of Columbus at the cellar of the Eastern Conference. The one-goal loss to the Hurricanes almost perfectly painted the picture of Pittsburgh’s slow start to the season — excellent goaltending spoiled by a lackluster offense that had struggled to find the chemistry it needed to score consistently. But this game was different, and Sullivan recognized it immediately. “I see signs of improvement in a lot of areas,” Sullivan said following the 2-1 loss. “For me there is a lot of positive things to look at and take out of this game, and that’s what I told our players. “In my experience going through these types of circumstances, you feel like you are slugging uphill, but when you continue to try to improve your game and play the right way it starts to turn. You may not get the result right away, but it does turn.” continued on page 144

The Penguins were not getting the results I told these guys they desired, but that would soon change. from day one — our In Pittsburgh’s next challenge is to become game, its last before a good team. the holiday break, two power-play goals And that is what propelled the club we are trying to do. to a 5-2 win over Mike Sullivan Columbus. Next, a 3-1 win on the road over Minnesota. Pittsburgh reeled off five wins in the seven games following the Carolina loss and collected points in seven of nine (5-2-2 record during the stretch) as of Jan. 10. Sullivan was right that his team showed positive signs, and that the system he began to implement over his first month as head coach was starting to pay dividends. Sullivan’s tweaks to the power play led to the unit being one of the key cogs of Pittsburgh’s success in his first month. The man-advantage unit, which had struggled at times in the final weeks before Sullivan took over, managed just a 14.8-percent (16-for-108) success rate in its first 32 games. Since the Carolina loss, Sullivan’s instruction to get more pucks to the area around the net while maintaining constant movement has resulted in a power play that has scored on exactly one-third (10-for-30) of its opportunities in their points-in-sevenof-nine stretch. As of Jan. 10, Pittsburgh sits just two points outside a wild-card spot and firmly back in the mix of the jumbled Eastern Conference playoff picture that appeared so far away weeks before. For Sullivan, the results are starting to come, and for those results to continue, the commitment to playing the right way and staying the course must become the key message now. “I told these guys from day one — our challenge is to become a good team,” Sullivan said. “And that is what we are trying to do.”

CHANGING ROSTER FOSTERS
HEALTHY COMPETITION By: Mike Prisuta
The Penguins’ 41st game of the season was just their 13th under head coach Mike Sullivan. They reached the official halfway point of the season with their 3-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Jan. 9, but more importantly they continued to familiarize themselves with the way things are to be done under Sullivan, in the season’s second half and beyond. An example along those lines was the recall of forwards Tom Kuhnhackl and Bryan Rust from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the assigning of forwards Conor Sheary and Scott Wilson to the Penguins’ AHL affiliate on Jan. 7. When asked if the moves were made to foster competition for roster spots in Pittsburgh or to see if Kuhnhackl and Rust were simply a better fit given the Penguins’ current construction, Sullivan said it was a little bit of both. “The competition is healthy, it’s great,” Sullivan said. “I think these guys coming up are rewarded because of their body of work playing for Wilkes-Barre. “The other side of it, as I said to Scott Wilson and Conor Sheary, is this is just part of the process for young players. It’s hard to play in this league. Part of the process is coming up and trying continued on page 155

to find a way to have an impact on the game given the role that you’re cast in and being able to sustain that level of play. That’s the hardest part. “When guys first come up they bring energy, they’re playing on adrenalin, they get excited. And then the reality of the league sets in and how hard it is. For a young player I think that’s a big challenge, to sustain that play day in and day out, game in and game out. And I think that’s a process for a lot of young players. “We don’t look at this in any way as a negative on any of the players that got sent down. We’re excited about the depth that we have there. That team in Wilkes-Barre has been extremely successful this year and these guys

The established players at NHL level are treated the same way in terms of the expression of expectations, especially when it comes to the making of individual and collective corrections. “I just approach it matter-of-factly,” Sullivan explained. “I believe in seeing things for what they are. It’s the only way we can make progress and get better. We point out areas of our game where we played well and that we have to continue to do in order to win. And we point out aspects of our game where if we don’t play the right way it’s hard enough to win. “The question I always pose to the players is can we win if we play this way? I try to reinforce with them the areas of the game when we do play the right way that we’re a pretty good hockey team. For me it always starts with an attitude. It starts with a work ethic and a certain energy level and passion that you bring to the table. That has to be the foundation of our team and our team identity. continued on page 158

That’s been my approach with them since taking the team over, making sure that we identify the areas where we have to get better and making sure we have the necessary commitment level in order to give ourselves the best chance to win.” The Penguins’ win at Montreal upped their record to 5-6-2 under Sullivan and offered more evidence that suggested they’re getting the message. “We understand what he wants,” center Evgeni Malkin said, “lots of meetings.” Malkin is all for whatever produces results. “If we play right we win,” he said.

“We have a plan,” There’s a lot of pressure center Evgeni Malkin said. “In the D zone on the players on the we play 1-on-1 of ice, but also a lot of course. In the offensive zone you do what you excitement for the fans want, control the puck, in the stands. change sides, shoot the puck, go to the net. We just have to play smart in the D zone.” The biggest area that teams can strategize is player changes, both being smart with their switches and also using them to attack the opponent. If a team can gain the offensive zone and have some possession time, they can change to get a rested player out against an opponent that has three tired players. Finally, when the Penguins are changing, it behooves them to retreat deep into their own zone, change and then start the rush. “You bring the puck back, you regroup and take your time,” Perron said. “Even if you have to bring it to the goalie, buy some time for the guys to change and get on the ice with fresh legs.” There’s a lot of pressure on the players on the ice, but also a lot of excitement for the fans in the stands. “Every puck that you touch can be a deciding factor one way or the other. There is a lot more pressure,” Perron said.

FUTURE GOALS
HOCKEY SCHOLAR NEIL ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL Bethel Park School District has committed to creating opportunities for students to develop 21st century technology skills. As part of this commitment, the Penguins’ Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program was introduced to Mr. Rosi’s fifth grade class at Neil Armstrong Middle School. “All of our students have some sort of familiar tie to the Penguins, so bringing this program into the classroom brought instant interest to the topics,” said Mr. Rosi. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of the game while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. Sample course topics include: Geometry: measuring the angle of a bank pass and the Law of Reflection Phases of Matter: manipulating air and ice temperature for the perfect game time surface “It was fantastic to see one student in particular who has had trouble with math work through each lesson independently and improve her number-sense and arithmetic. I’ve even heard other students comment that it’s like they’re ‘on’ the Penguins team as they earn trophies for module completion alongside Crosby and Malkin!” If you’re a 4th-7th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

As one of the Penguins’ most popular ambassadors, not to mention one of the NHL’s most beloved mascots, you can find Iceburgh leading cheers, beating drums and dancing in the aisles at every Penguins home game, attending major hockey events around the world, visiting local schools, or just spending time at area hospitals and community events. Iceburgh has even been asked to be a guest of honor at numerous wedding celebrations in recent years! There’s no doubt about it, Iceburgh is one busy Penguin! In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. Last season, during his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game in Columbus, Iceburgh helped the Eastern Conference mascots defeat the Western Conference by scoring two goals and two assists in the first annual NHL Mascot Showdown while also emerging victorious in the mascot dance competition. To request an Iceburgh appearance at your next community or special event, please complete the online request form by visiting pittsburghpenguins.com and selecting “Iceburgh” under the “Fan Zone” section.

DRAFT CLASS DANIEL SPRONG
Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), has become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.
DOMINIK SIMON
Forward • 5th round, 137th overall Simon has played his entire career in the Czech Republic League. He played the 2014-15 season for HC Plzen, a team owned by former Penguins player Martin Straka, and finished tied for third on the team with 30 points (18G-12A) in 52 games. continued on page 191

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.
FREDERICK TIFFELS
Forward • 6th round, 167th overall In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college. Tiffels is a big soccer fan and follows his hometown club, FC Koln. His favorite player on the team is Lukas Podolski.
NIKITA PAVLYCHEV
Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong.
