LIGHTNING STRIKES Tampa Bay’s 6-5 overtime victory over Philadelphia on Dec. 27 ran the Lightning’s record against Eastern Conference teams in 2018-19 to 20-2-0. Tampa Bay became the first team in NHL history to win 20 of its first 22 conference games in a season. The only other teams to have won 19 of their first 22 conference games were the 2012-13 Blackhawks (19-0-3 vs. the West) and the 2005-06 Senators (19-3-0 vs. the East). The win over the Flyers also improved the Lightning to 11-0-1 in December, which tied the franchise record for victories in a calendar month (11-3-2 in January 2004 and 11-2-0 in December 2017).

The hat trick by Kane and one by Flames LW Johnny Gaudreau in Calgary’s 4-1 win on Dec. 27 at Winnipeg ran the total in the NHL this season to 46, the most prior to Jan. 1 since the 1992-93 campaign (57).

THE PAT AND THE HAT

EARNING THE SHUTOUT

Blackhawks RW Patrick Kane became the 14th player in NHL history to score 20 or more goals in each of his first 12 seasons with a hat trick in Chicago’s 5-2 victory over Minnesota on Dec. 27. Kane (20G-27A in 39 games) became the second U.S.-born player to record 20 or more goals in at least 12 consecutive seasons at any point of his career (Keith Tkachuk, 12).

Dallas G Anton Khudobin set a Stars/ North Stars franchise record for saves in a shutout by turning aside 49 pucks in a 2-0 win on Dec. 27 at Nashville. Khudobin became the 13th goalie to register at least 49 saves in a shutout since saves became a statistic in 1955-56. Edmonton’s Ben Scrivens holds the record for saves in a shutout with 59 in a 3-0 win over San Jose on Jan. 29, 2014.

PITTS BU RG H PE N G U I N S E LITE

M ID -WINTER CLASSIC RECAP BY ALEX ROESSLER

The Mid-Winter Classic is quickly becoming one of the elite hockey tournaments in North America. The annual event, hosted by the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite organization, just before Christmas attracts 50 teams from around North America to the Pittsburgh area to kick off the holidays with competitive hockey. The tournament features divisions that range from the 2009 birth years through the 2006 birth years. Hosting an event of this caliber at home is a great perk for members of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite squads that will be competing not only because they are afforded the opportunity to be home for the holidays but also because the chance to play against elite level competition without having to travel creates a tremendous home-ice advantage. While the championship game for each age bracket was hosted at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, the tournament organizers took advantage of the many rinks around Pittsburgh with games also taking place at the RMU Island Sports Center, Baierl Ice Complex, Alpha Ice Complex, Shady

Side Academy, Center Ice Arena and Pittsburgh Ice Arena. All participating teams defended home ice well and demonstrated the quality of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite organization and three teams were able to clinch titles on home ice as the 2009 Elites, 2008 Elites and 2007 Elites all won their championship round games in convincing fashion. The 2009 Elites posted a resounding victory as they dispatched the North Jersey Avalanche 7-2 to claim their banner. The 2008 Elites faced a local foe in the Pittsburgh Vengeance in the championship game and after the dust settled on a 3-1 win, the 08’s were celebrating at center ice as champions. A similar ending was in store for the 2007 Elites who claimed their championship in a shutout fashion over the PAL Jr. Islanders by a score of 3-0.

Congratulations to all teams who participated in what was another successful Mid-Winter Classic! 7

to Armed Forces TV so I missed the next season and our second Cup. Once back in this general area, we started attending Penguins games regularly. We immediately had our 4-year-old daughter (at that time) wanting to attend every game and watch hockey all the time!

AT WHAT POINT IN YOUR FANDOM DID YOU REALIZE YOU WERE HOOKED ON HOCKEY? For me it was at the end of the 1989-90 season. We were living in Washington state. At that time, your TV/cable carrier selection and choices were not what they are now. Needless to say, it was a great day when I could get Pittsburgh. The first run we had for the Cup was so exciting and I was totally sold! We then moved overseas and only had access

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PENGUINS MEMORY? I remember my daughter and I standing at the gate waiting for players to leave on a frigid night in January many years ago. The temperature was in the negative and the wind chill was actually in the negative teens. We were fortunate to meet Marc-Andre Fleury, Tyler Kennedy, and a few more young players. 9

The most notable interaction, however, was with Mark Eaton. He got out of his car to sign autographs, shake hands and he was patient while we tried to take pictures. Unfortunately, we had been out there so long and it was so cold that the camera would not work. Kudos to him for getting out of a warm car to take time for the Penguins fans.

Karen and her daughter Kelsey enjoying a game together on Fan Appreciation Night.

WHICH PITTSBURGH PENGUINS’ PLAYER WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF MOST LIKE? WHY? A few years ago, you ran a little quiz of music, movies, food, etc. and the results said I matched with Sidney Crosby — so I will go with him!

DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL GAME DAY ATTIRE. My typical game day attire is a layered Penguins outfit. Depending upon what month we’re in (temp outside as well as inside) I usually start with a black or gray long sleeve cold weather shirt with a Penguins t-shirt or sweatshirt over that and a Penguins jersey. My husband does the same type of layering and tops it off with his Penguins Veterans hat and jersey — he was in the Army Special Forces (First Group, SFC Ret).

IF TRAPPED IN AN ESCAPE ROOM, WHICH TWO PITTSBURGH PENGUINS’ PLAYERS WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO HELP YOU BREAKOUT AND WHY? I think I would choose Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. They are not only team players but incredibly competitive. They were brought up in different countries and approach things in different ways. Hopefully that would work out well in an escape room!

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE AWAY GAME DESTINATION? IF SO, WHERE? I have not been there as of yet but I would love to see the Penguins play in Vegas. Montreal or Boston would probably be next!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE GAME DAY EXPERIENCE? From the point of getting ready, we have a 100 mile drive that we use to talk about the game/competitor, line up and basically everything hockey! In addition, I’m quite patriotic so I appreciate that our fans and our arena are very much into the National Anthem. I love the excitement that goes through you as the anthem ends and the play begins! Winning is always nice, too!

CLASSIC MO M ENTS H I G H LI G HTE D TH E 20 09 CHAMPIONSHIP JOURNEY BY JASON SEIDLING

The following passage first appeared in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 50th anniversary marketing book, “A Great Day for Hockey.”

A Pittsburgh Penguins team that sat below the playoff cut line when Dan Bylsma took over on Feb. 15 rocketed up the standings to fourth place and homeice advantage in the opening round against the archrival Philadelphia Flyers. Things appeared to be smooth sailing after Pittsburgh went up 2-0 and 3-1 in the series, but the Penguins were suddenly staring at a potential Game 7 when the Flyers jumped ahead 3-0 in Game 6. Max Talbot, whose giveaway gave the Flyers their opening goal that day, had other ideas. “I asked [Daniel] Carcillo to fight because I messed up in the first period on their first goal,” Talbot said. “I’m sitting between the first and second period, [saying to myself] what can I do? I know I’m not going to score three goals. “And I got to the faceoff, not even thinking too much about fighting Carcillo, but thinking, ‘ok that would be a good moment.’ So it really just came, like yeah 22

let’s do this. And I asked him to fight, got beat up. And I’m on the ice and I see him from the corner of my eyes and he’s just going like this [repeatedly raising his arms in the air], and the crowd went nuts. “So I’m like what’s the opposite of this? And I just go like this [he put an index finger to his lips, shushing the crowd] for no specific reason. It was too loud. I went and sat in the box and my teammates just answered the bell and scored some big goals.” Led by Sidney Crosby, who scored twice, the Penguins struck for five unanswered goals following Talbot’s silencing to earn a second-round date with the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Washington Capitals. All eyes in the hockey world were glued to the marquee matchup between the Crosby and Washington’s Alex Ovechkin. Neither disappointed. Both produced hat tricks in an epic Game 2, and each player accounted for eight goals in the seven games. But just like throughout the many playoff meetings between these clubs in

skated from behind the net, turned and unleashed a ferocious backhander under the crossbar behind Cam Ward to complete his hat trick. ‘The Geno’ ended any sliver of chance Carolina had at winning the series. Pittsburgh went on to sweep the ‘Canes in four games. Standing in the way of the Penguins and the franchise’s third Stanley Cup would be none other than Marian Hossa and the defending champion Detroit Red Wings, who again raced out to a 2-0 series lead. Jordan Staal ensured the Penguins would begin flipping the script on the previous year by tallying a backbreaking, end-to-end shorthanded goal to tie Game 4 at 2-2, helping buoy Pittsburgh to an eventual 4-2 victory that knotted the Final at 2-2. Just when the Penguins had climbed back into the series, the walls came crashing down. Detroit pummeled the Penguins, 5-0, in a Game 5, chasing Fleury from the net in favor of Mathieu Garon.

the 1990s, it was Pittsburgh that enjoyed the last laugh. The final score of Game 7 would be 6-2 in favor of Pittsburgh, but if not for Marc-Andre Fleury, not only would that contest not have been a laugher, it might not have even been victorious. Just minutes into the game, Ovechkin got behind the defense on a breakaway and was about to tuck a forehand shot into the net when Fleury’s glove hand had other ideas, snatching the puck out of the air to keep the game scoreless. Crosby drew first blood moments later and the rout was on. The Carolina Hurricanes staggered into the Eastern Conference Final battered and bruised, especially on the back end, following consecutive sevengame series wins. Evgeni Malkin made sure to quickly deliver the death blow to the Hurricanes’ season. Pittsburgh was ahead by one goal in the third period of Game 2 when Malkin lined up for an offensive-zone faceoff. Malkin won the draw forward, 23

A potentially humiliating defeat put the Wings ahead, 3-2. After the loss, Hall of Fame co-owner Mario Lemieux made his way down to the locker room to show support for his team, exuding a calmness about the perilous situation that wasn’t lost on his players. Ray Shero recanted to Pittsburgh Magazine in 2013 how he made sure to quickly thank Lemieux for standing behind the team at its darkest hour. In return, Shero received this text response: “See you Monday. We are a family, in this together. We don’t need anyone who’s only with us win or tie. Let’s forget about tonight. We will win Tuesday and win the Cup Friday.” Years into his retirement, Lemieux could see the game unfold before anyone else. Pittsburgh hung on for a 2-1 win in Game 6. The Penguins were plenty inspired already heading into Game 7, but Lemieux added to their motivation by sending the players this message on the morning of June 12, 2009: “This is the chance of a lifetime to realize your childhood dreams and win the Stanley Cup. Play without fear, and you will be successful! See you at center ice.” “It was fun,” Lemieux remembered about drafting his text. “I talked to [Penguins VP] Tom McMillian a lot the night before. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it, but it was just little words of encouragement to the guys in the morning. … And I decided to send the

text early in the morning to all the guys and hopefully that gave them a little confidence, a little boost to play that night.” Nobody played with more confidence that night than Talbot, who scored the first two goals of Game 7 in the second period, first by converting a quick turnover forced by Malkin behind Red Wings’ goalie Chris Osgood, and later by keeping the puck on a two-on-one with Tyler Kennedy and firing a shot over Osgood’s shoulder. Not surprisingly, the defendingchampion Red Wings didn’t fold, cutting Pittsburgh’s lead in half, while to quote the great Mike Lange, ‘firing everything 25

and the kitchen sink’ at Fleury in the waning moments. As the clock raced towards zero, a rebound off a faceoff play landed right on the blade of Detroit captain Nick Lidstrom, who stared at an open net. Just when it looked as though the Wings were going to force overtime, Fleury instinctively dove across his crease to make a Cup-winning shoulder save at the buzzer, preserving the 2-1 win. Crosby and the Penguins were Stanley Cup champions. It was time to fulfill Lemieux’s prophecy and meet him at center ice.

“Yeah that was very cool, to have Sid search me out on the ice and give me the Cup, that was an incredible moment,” Lemieux said. “He was living with us at the time, and for both of us to be on the ice, achieving our dream and lifting the Stanley Cup together was a great moment.”

MARIO

LE M I EUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux is one of the greatest players in NHL history, with two Stanley Cups, six NHL scoring titles, three MVP awards, two Conn Smythe Trophies, a Calder Trophy, a Masterton Trophy – and an Olympic gold medal for good measure. Now, he’s also established himself as one of the league’s greatest owners. Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle led the Penguins to three Stanley Cups in a nine-year span between 2009 and 2017, giving Mario more Cups as an owner than he won as a player. Lemieux and Burkle organized a group of investors that bought the Penguins out of bankruptcy in 1999. The combination of Lemieux’s hockey acumen and Burkle’s business savvy made them a formidable front office tandem and led to a series of spectacular achievements both on and off the ice. The Penguins, during that time, have become one of the premier franchises in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice. That includes qualifying for the playoffs for 12 straight seasons – the longest current streak in the NHL – and reaching the Cup Final four times and the conference finals five times in the past 11 years. The Penguins entered the 2018-19 season having sold out every game for 11-plus seasons while setting high standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose

arena, which opened in August, 2010. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the top facilities in North America and has hosted such national events as the 2012, 2015 and 2018 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament opening rounds, the 2012 NHL Draft, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, the 2014 USA Gymnastics Championships and the 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup Finals. NCAA national championships in wrestling and women’s volleyball will be held here in 2019. Lemieux also helped to launch the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in nearby Cranberry, PA. Now in its fourth year of operation, the practice home of the Penguins is the first facility of its kind to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. As a player, “Le Magnifique” was a gifted 6-foot-4 centerman who dominated play for parts of three decades. Although he faced a numbing series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease, he retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player for the first time in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September 1999 and then returned to the ice on December 27, 2000 – becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. He also captained Team Canada to an Olympic gold medal in 2002. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation, which has raised more than $25 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, have raised four children and reside in Sewickley. 33

RON

BU RKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, hospitality, technology and distribution industries, is also a three-time Stanley Cup champion as co-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Burkle teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership duos in professional sports, winning three Cups from 2009-17. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. But he also helped create a winning mindset for the Penguins organization both on and off the ice. Although Burkle prefers to operate quietly and behind the scenes, Lemieux praises his immense role in the team’s success. “Ron is one of the main reasons we still have hockey in Pittsburgh,” Lemieux told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “If I was not able to buy the Penguins and have Ron as our top investor, I don’t think the Penguins would be here today. He’s a great guy and a very smart businessman. He loves Pittsburgh, he loves the Penguins. I think people should know that.” Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for 11-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports.

The Penguins have earned 12 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals five times in the past 11 years, in addition to the three Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Americold, Soho House, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a member of the Board of The Scripps Research Institute, the National Urban League and Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralphs/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, incuding the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVI D

MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the team’s new arena was opening in August, 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game where all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August, 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill – as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is a native of the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Beechview.

In 11 seasons as a senior executive with the Penguins, David Morehouse has seen the team win three Stanley Cups, make the Cup Finals four times and reach the conference finals five times. Though his expertise is on the team’s business side – especially branding and marketing – Morehouse’s greatest achievement has been creating a corporate culture that has driven the Penguins to consistent excellence both on and off the ice. “It’s no coincidence that we’ve enjoyed this kind of success with David Morehouse as our key senior executive,” said co-owner Ron Burkle. “We’ve obviously made a lot of great acquisitions on the player side, but one of the best acquisitions we’ve ever made was David himself.” The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during Morehouse’s tenure – selling out every game for 11-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. The Penguins again led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings in 2017-18. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in 36

JIM

RUTHERFORD EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Three-time Stanley Cup champion Jim Rutherford is in his fifth season as the executive vice president and general manager of Penguins. Highly-regarded by his peers as one of the top executives in the NHL, Rutherford’s tenure with the Penguins has included back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and ’17, four playoff appearances and the third-most wins (regular season and playoffs) among all NHL clubs in that span entering the 2018-19 campaign. Pittsburgh’s six-game defeat of the Nashville Predators in the 2017 Stanley Cup Final not only made the Penguins the NHL’s first repeat champion since 1998, but it allowed Rutherford to become just the seventh GM since the 1967 NHL Expansion to win three Stanley Cups. One year earlier, Rutherford became the first GM since ‘67 to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. As a reward for his quick, on-the-fly reshaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Pittsburgh’s roster didn’t require as much tinkering in 2016-17, but Rutherford once again added key pieces at the right time,

including bolstering his defense by trading for veteran Ron Hainsey near the deadline. Hainsey earned top-pair minutes in the absence of Kris Letang. Rutherford spent 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. At the junior hockey level, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft.

BI LL

GUERIN

ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his fifth season as assistant general manager of the Penguins. One of Guerin’s primary roles is serving as the general manager of the Penguins’ minor-league affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his first season in charge of WBS in 2017-18, Guerin helped the team improve its consecutive playoff streak to 16-straight years, the longest active run in the AHL. A two-time Stanley Cup champion as assistant GM of the Penguins (2016 and ’17), Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and

JASON

college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was integral during Pittsburgh’s ’09 title run. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

KARMANOS

ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive with Carolina from 1998-2013, serving various roles including vice president/ assistant general manager under Jim Rutherford. In addition to winning a Cup in 2006, Karmanos helped build the Hurricanes squad that was a Cup finalist in 2002. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury.

Jason Karmanos is in his second season as the Penguins’ assistant general manager after spending his first three seasons as the team’s vice president of hockey operations. As assistant GM, Karmanos continues to be involved in all facets of hockey operations decision-making, and he also oversees the Penguins’ amateur scouting staff. He played a vital role in helping the Penguins swing the complex three-team trade to acquire Derick Brassard on Feb. 23, 2018. A three-time Stanley Cup champion, Karmanos helped build the Carolina Hurricanes’ 2006 championship club in addition to his consecutive titles in Pittsburgh in 2016 and ‘17. 41

MIKE

S U LLIVAN HEAD COACH

Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WBS, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. A native of Marshfield, MA, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship.

Mike Sullivan begins his fourth season as head coach of the Penguins. His first three years produced back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and ’17 and a team-record-tying nine-straight playoff series victories. Heading into the 2018-19 campaign, Sullivan is already arguably the mostsuccessful coach in club history. Not only is he the only two-time Stanley Cup winner to coach the Penguins, but his nine playoff series victories are a team record, his 38 postseason wins are second-most and his 130 regular-season victories are fourth-most. By winning the Stanley Cup in his first two years behind the Penguins bench, Sullivan became the first American-born coach in NHL history to win multiple Cups, and he joined the legendary Toe Blake of the Montreal Canadiens as the only coaches to win the championship in each of their first two seasons with a team. Despite the burden of being the defending champs, Sullivan’s club finished the 2016-17 regular season with 50 wins and 111 points — the latter the second-most in the history of the franchise — good enough for the secondbest record in the entire league. Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the second-best record in the 43

SERGEI

GONCHAR ASSISTANT COACH

Sergei Gonchar enters his second season as an assistant coach for the Penguins, where he and Jacques Martin work closely with the team’s defensemen. Since moving in a coaching role, which began with a two-year stint as the Penguins’ defenseman development coach from 2015-17, Gonchar earned plenty of praise for his work developing young blueliners. Justin Schultz and Jamie Oleksiak are two defensemen whose game has progressed the most under Gonchar’s tutelage.

One of the top power-play quarterbacks of his era, Gonchar produced 811 career points in 20 NHL seasons, the most of any Russian-born defenseman. He ranks in the top-20 all-time among NHL defensemen in both games played and points. During his five-year run in Pittsburgh from 2005-10, Gonchar tallied 259 points (54G-205A). Gonchar is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, winning all three titles with Pittsburgh. He was an alternate captain on the Penguins’ ’09 team, and an executive in 2016 and ’17. Gonchar also helped the Penguins advance to the Cup Final in 2008.

JACQUES

MARTI N

ASSISTANT COACH

Jacques Martin enters his fourth season as a Penguins’ assistant coach in 2018-19. He is in charge of the Penguins’ penalty killing unit and he works closely with Sergei Gonchar presiding over the team’s defensemen. Martin led a defensive group that overcame numerous injury woes, including the season-ending loss of Kris Letang, to help the Penguins capture a secondstraight Stanley Cup in 2017, the second championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head

coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team. 44

MARK

RECCHI

ASSISTANT COACH

Mark Recchi is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Penguins. He works closely with the team’s forwards and the power-play unit. As the Penguins’ player development coach from 2014-17, Recchi worked with Pittsburgh’s prospects throughout the organization from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to the junior and college ranks. Two of the players Recchi worked with at WBS, Jake Guentzel and Carter Rowney, played huge roles in Pittsburgh’s 2017 Stanley Cup championship run. Recchi enjoyed a 22-year NHL playing

career that began with the Penguins in 1988-89 and wrapped up with the Boston Bruins in 2010-11. In that span, Recchi accumulated 577 goals and 1,533 points in 1,652 contests, numbers that earned him enshrinement in the Hockey Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2017. A seven-time NHL All-Star, Recchi won three Stanley Cup championships as a player: 1991 with Pittsburgh; 2006 as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes; and 2011 with Boston. He added his name to the Cup two more times as a Penguins executive in 2016 and ’17.

BU C KLEY

MIKE

GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Buckley is in his second season as the Penguins goaltending coach after spending the previous four seasons as Pittsburgh’s goaltending development coach. Buckley played a crucial role in Pittsburgh’s back-to-back Stanley Cup championship runs, serving as an eye in the sky and traveling with the club both years. His finest work thus far has been guiding the development of Matt Murray from top prospect to the first goalie in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup-clinching game twice as a rookie. Before Murray became a star at the NHL level, Buckley worked with him as a

first-year pro in 2014-15, when Murray was the AHL’s Rookie of the Year and Goaltender of the Year. In Buckley’s four seasons as goaltending development coach, the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins finished with the lowest goals-against average in the league three times. Following a four-year college career at UMass-Amherst that ended in 2000, Buckley played five seasons of professional hockey from 2000-05, including parts of three campaigns with the Mississippi Sea Wolves and Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL. 46

Provide all aspects of care to abandoned, neglected, and injured animals.

Since 2010, the Penguins have teamed up with Humane Animal Rescue to publish eight Penguins & Paws calendars. Their annual joint effort has raised over $550,000 for animal welfare in our region. If you haven’t already picked up a copy of the 2019 Penguins & Paws Calendar — it’s not too late! Order a copy today online at humaneanimalrescue.org/penscalendar.

Reunite lost pets with their caregivers or seek new families for them. Educate the community on humane care and interactions with all animals with the goal of reducing pet overpopulation and negative relationships with native wildlife. Reinforce a standard of living for animals and prevent cruelty.

Sincere thanks to every Penguins fan and animal lover who purchases the 2019 Penguins & Paws Charity Pet Calendar!

Provide assistance and medical care to injured, orphaned, or ill native PA wildlife with a goal of returning them to their natural habitat. 92

WE DON’T JUST REBUILD WRISTS AND KNEES.

WE BUILD BETTER ATHLETES. We diagnose and repair injuries, of course. But we can also help you get stronger, faster, and more agile — which may help prevent injuries. In fact, no one in the region has more expertise in treating, training, and inspiring every sort of athlete. Whether your goals are at either end of the ice. Or purely personal.

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 44th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979,

PHIL

when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, CA, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 16th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. For his career he totaled 199 113

HOCKEY

ETIQUETTE 101 OUR GOAL? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen with these important reminders: 1.

DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stop inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this great idea!

2.

NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, obstructing the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!

3.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!

4.

PPG Paints Arena is a NON-SMOKING FACILITY; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

5.

It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking! HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE!

6.

Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — HAVE FUN! 129

Over the years, as the Penguins’ jerseys would change and the logo was modified, the club stayed with predominantly black and white jerseys — mixed in with a touch of gray in the late 1990s and two different shades of blue thirds, a light-blue throwback in 2008 and a dark-blue version in 2011. But the Penguins didn’t return to a predominantly yellow jersey until the 2017 Coors Light Stadium Series Game against the Philadelphia Flyers. For that game, a 4-2 victory at Heinz Field on Feb. 25, 2017, the Penguins wore “Pittsburgh Gold” jerseys for the first time since 1985. The Stadium Series jerseys featured a standalone skating Penguin minus the golden triangle

The Pittsburgh Penguins unveiled new third jerseys for the 2018-19 season, featuring a dynamic gold background with black sleeves and white and gold striping in early October. For long-time Penguins’ fans, the new sweaters were a blast from the past to the early 1980s when the Pens became one of the first teams in the NHL to introduce a third jersey. For three seasons from 1982-85, the Penguins wore gold alternate jerseys, complete with matching yellow helmets. When the jerseys were first debuted, they were only worn for Sunday home games. The final season for the original gold jerseys came in 1984-85 – Mario Lemieux’s rookie season. 134

new design incorporates elements from the popular 2017 Stadium Series uniform while acknowledging the heritage of gold jerseys worn by Mario Lemieux and the Penguins in the 1980s. As adidas noted in its press release announcing the third jerseys, the goal was to create a signature look for these new thirds, as the crest spotlights the standalone skating penguin on a singletoned gold sweater. Mixing the past with the present, the contrasting black sleeves are highlighted with white and

from the traditional Penguins’ logo. The sleek new design also featured two patches — one to commemorate the Stadium Series and another paying tribute to Pittsburgh’s heritage as the “City of Champions.” Pittsburgh wore yellow socks with a single black stripe that evening. Based upon the popularity of the yellow Stadium Series jerseys, the Penguins elected to go back to a mostly yellow sweater when they went about designing their current third jerseys. The 137

gold striping that are inspired from the Penguins’ 1984 jerseys, while the letters and numbering mirror the current home and away jerseys. Additional design details include the sleeve numbers being raised to the shoulder of the jersey to mimic the 1980s look. One difference in this year’s third jersey outfit is that the yellow socks will feature both a black and a white stripe. Just like they did at the 2017 Stadium Series Game, the Penguins will be wearing yellow helmets when they wear their third jerseys. Pittsburgh wore its new yellow third jerseys for the first time on Thursday, Nov. 15 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The team is scheduled to wear the jerseys 12 times in 2018-19 — all at PPG Paints Arena.

that help you in the future. Like being on time, being part of a team that represents something bigger than the team itself and just learning to balance all the things that you have going on. A lot of time management.” Five Penguins played collegiately in the Hockey East conference: goaltender Casey DeSmith played three seasons at the University of New Hampshire; defenseman Chad Ruhwedel spent three seasons at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell; defenseman Brian Dumoulin played three seasons at Boston College and won the 2012 National Championship; defenseman Jamie Oleksiak spent one year at Northeastern University; and forward Zach Aston-Reese spent four years there. Reese was nominated as a “Hat Trick” finalist for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, which is presented to the best player in college hockey. The Penguins’ Skating and Skills Development coach Ty Hennes, who played for Boston College and

In a perfect world, your career is your passion. Every day you wake up and your job is to go do what you love the most — what inspires you, what excites you and what challenges you. But not everyone is afforded that opportunity. For one reason or another, it may not be practical or attainable. For college athletes, the chances of turning their passion into a career are few and far between as less than two percent of NCAA athletes reach the professional level. But for college hockey players, that number increases slightly to 6.4 percent. And of the NHL’s 31 teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ roster carries the most former college hockey players with 13. “I think you do a lot of maturing at school,” forward Riley Sheahan said. “When you leave, I think you look to do whatever it is that brought you there. For me, I was fortunate enough to be able to keep playing hockey. Obviously, that was my first choice. But I think my time there helped me with skills 154

won a National Championship in 2001, had nothing but praise for playing collegiately. “It’s a competitive level, plus you add all the other stuff of classes, homework, travel, practice all of it,” Hennes said. “It teaches guys to prioritize and I think makes the transition to the NHL that much easier.” Three players played in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association: Matt Cullen spent two seasons at St. Cloud State University; defenseman Justin Schultz spent three years at the University of Wisconsin; and winger Phil Kessel played the 2005-06 season at the University of Minnesota before getting drafted fifth overall by the Boston Bruins in 2006. Four players spent time in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association before its dissolution in 2013. Forward Bryan Rust played all four years at the University of Notre Dame, while Sheahan spent two of his three seasons alongside Rust with the Fighting Irish. “’Rusty’ peaked in college,” Sheahan said jokingly. “He really did enjoy [college]. He loves to learn. Big nerd, that guy.” Since reuniting in Pittsburgh, the duo has become inseparable. They’re constantly making fun of one another in interviews, placing bets during practice and carrying over the chemistry from their days in the Blue and Gold. “It’s awesome, we get to reminisce a bit,” Sheahan said. “Then we go to other places around the NHL where

Boston College before his 18-season career in the NHL. Goalie coach Mike Buckley played four years for University of Massachusetts-Amherst. College was not only a stepping stone to success for these NHLers — it became an integral component of their identity. “I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Johnson said. “Those were two of the most fun years I ever had. On the developmental side of it I think it’s huge. [College] puts you in a lot of situations to help you navigate life. It was obviously big for me as a player, but I think it really helped prepare me for everyday life and some situations as a professional hockey player.” © Getty Images

there’s guys like Anders Lee [New York Islanders] and Ian Cole [Colorado Avalanche], guys that you knew at a different time in your life and you still get to see them around. You just kind of pick up where you last left off.” Defenseman Jack Johnson spent two years as a Michigan Wolverine before being selected third overall in 2005 behind current Penguins teammate Sidney Crosby, who of course went first overall, while forward Derek Grant played for rival Michigan State. Notre Dame, Michigan and Michigan State all reside in the Big Ten now. “All the rivalries are still so big with us,” Johnson explained. “MichiganMichigan State is obviously huge. Michigan-Notre Dame gets intense around here. ‘Schultzy’ and I put a bet on Michigan-Wisconsin [football]. He still owes me dinner on the road. I usually bet dinner on the road because win or lose at least you’re getting dinner. So, you still win either way, just not the bragging rights.” Jake Guentzel is the sole player to have played in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. The forward played three seasons at the University of Nebraska-Omaha before joining the Penguins for the second of back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2017. Even some members of the Penguins coaching staff got their starts in college. Head coach Mike Sullivan played four years at Boston University prior to his 11-year career in the NHL. And to those who continue working diligently to achieve them. After spending much of the season discussing what the Penguins had been wrestling with, issues such as puck management, engagement, finding the right lineup and line combinations and even goaltending, head coach Mike Sullivan had a chance to stand at a podium and expand upon all that had been going right leading up to and through the victory over Detroit. Sullivan’ subject matter included: Goaltender Matt Murray winning for the fourth time in four starts since a ninegame absence due to injury: “Just over the year watching Matt, when he’s at his

They’d spent much of the first three months grappling for traction. But as the 2018 portion of this season’s schedule came to a close, the Penguins were able to showcase what it might look like the rest of the way after having apparently found their game. The home finale in December, a 5-2 victory over the Red Wings on Dec. 28, ran the Penguins’ records to 8-2-1 in their last 11 games at PPG Paints Arena and to 12-4-3 in their last 19 overall. Both are a long way from the 1-7-2 stretch the Penguins endured from Oct. 30 through Nov. 19. Sometimes, good things really do come to those who wait. 169

If he can just play his game and just bring the same level of urgency and the compete level and just embrace the challenge, we think he can really help this team win. “I know he’s had his ups and downs but I believe in him. I think he’s a really good player. I think he’s a unique player. I think he’s a guy that can really make this team a pretty tough team to play against.” The viability of a third line that includes Brassard and Phil Kessel: “They potentially could be such a dangerous line. They’re both really good players in their own right and they help us create a certain amount of balance that makes it really difficult for our opponents.”

best he tracks the puck really well, he anticipates. One of his biggest strengths, I think, is his ability to read plays, his intellect. He sees the plays extremely well and he tends to square up to pucks and make difficult saves look routine sometimes. They’re really not, he’s just a smart goalie, he anticipates and he gets to his spots. It’s economy of motion and I think that’s when Matt is at his best. “Since he’s come back off his injury that’s what I’ve witnessed. He’s tracking the puck really well. He’s reading the plays really well. He tends to make difficult saves look routine.” Derick Brassard’s first multi-goal effort with the Penguins: “Him and I have had a lot of conversations about it and he’s well aware of the situation here and playing behind two generational talents in ‘Sid’ (Sidney Crosby) and ‘Geno’ (Evgeni Malkin), and it’s been an

History.

In the making.

154 years ago, we redefined the energy future for the region. We’re at it again. With the largest natural gas fields right here, CNX is pioneering vital new energy solutions. We’re also generating positive energy in the community with jobs averaging $129,500 annually.

The power play: Our power play was a big difference maker and our power play, when it’s at its best, has the potential to do that. And it’s done it for so long for us, that’s an encouraging sign, as well.” Winger Jake Guentzel’s five-year, $30-million contract extension: “I think it’s great for us as an organization. I think it’s great for Jake, I’m thrilled for him. He certainly is deserving. He’s played extremely well for this organization in his time here. He’s been part of one of the Stanley Cups that we’ve won, he’s had great playoff runs each year and he’s been a consistent player for us. “We’re certainly thrilled for him but we’re thrilled for the Penguins, as well. We just think it’s a great deal for both sides. I couldn’t be happier for him, but to have a guy that’s as quality a player and as quality a person as he is, to get him under contract for a handful of years, is only going to make us better.” Happy New Year.

He’s played extremely well for this organization in his time here. MIKE SULLIVAN
