Season Ticket Holder

SPOTLIGHT

Stacy Coons Hometown:

With whom do you attend Penguins home games? Usually my husband but sometimes my eight-year-old daughter and my father.

Gibsonia, PA Season Ticket Location: Section 218

What is your earliest memory of Penguins hockey? My dad always watched the Penguins Season Penguins. He sat me down in the kitchen Ticket Holder (where he often watched TV) when I was eleven-years old and pointed to the TV before saying, “That’s Mario Lemieux. He’s the best hockey player in the world.” I don’t remember a lot from my childhood as I grow older, but I vividly remember that moment. I became an avid hockey fan after that conversation, and I often watched the games with my dad in the kitchen while my mom watched something else in our living room. She still switches back and forth between games and her TV shows this many Stacy, her husband Jim and their children Ava and Jordan. years later!

11 YEAR

What has been your favorite off-ice Penguins event to attend and why? We went to a fan carnival many years ago. A small number of people were there, so we got to meet many players. Marc-Andre Fleury signed a puck for us, and I got to play a money wheel game with Aleksey Morozov. I really liked watching him play, too. My husband and I walked away from that thinking the Penguins organization was pretty classy for giving fans that kind of opportunity. What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? I told my husband, before we married, that I wanted kids, Penguins season tickets when we could afford them and a cat (in that order). Fourteen years later, we now have all of those. continued on page 15

continued from page 13

What is the most unique keepsake in your personal collection of Penguins memorabilia? Three pictures of me with the Stanley Cup. We stood in line for 5 1/2 hours for the first picture in 2009. Twitter allowed me to scoop up the kids on a rare day when my husband came home from work early so we could race to DICK’S Sporting Goods in Cranberry for a family picture. In the most recent picture, my husband and I switched positions. I’ve touched the Cup three more times than Alex Ovechkin, so I’m a happy person. In your eyes, what makes the Pittsburgh Penguins, or hockey in general, great? Phil Bourque is right when he says the Cup is the hardest trophy in the world to win. These players play over eighty games in a season, and they still have to win four more rounds...that’s just crazy. I can’t imagine the kind of shape a player must be in to get through that much wear and tear on one’s body. I just think they must be super-human. Some of them are my age, and I’m tired by 8:00PM when my kids go to bed, so I can’t fathom how Cullen can play every game like he does. I just don’t understand it. I’m in awe of the sheer physicality of this sport both on and off the ice. Plus, I’ve watched the best players throughout my entire life. . . not just Mario, Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin, but I’ve consistently watched every player who has come and gone contribute something to this city and therefore to my life. 15

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of PPG Paints Arena. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE Co-Owner

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE Chief Executive Officer & President

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is a native of the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Beechview.

JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager

Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager

Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

Bill Guerin capped his second season as the Penguins assistant general manager by earning the first Stanley Cup championship of his executive career in 2015-16. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects, including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the 2016 championship run. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach

Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach

Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach

Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES Goaltending Coach Mike Bales has established himself as one of the NHL’s top goaltending coaches during his first three seasons with the team. During the Penguins’ 2016 Stanley Cup championship drive, Pittsburgh used three goaltenders who thrived under his tutelage, including rookie Matt Murray, whose 15 playoff wins equaled the NHL rookie record. Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. PENGUINS IN THE CLASSROOM …

TEACHING STEAM!

Chartiers Valley Middle School

Chartiers Valley Middle School’s STEAM classroom kicked off the school year with the Penguin’s Future Goals — Hockey Scholar program for a unit on how math intersects with the real world. Students greatly enjoyed the interactive simulations and game-like environment in which these lessons are taught. One student said, “I enjoy math. I enjoy hockey. It’s nice to see them used together in real life!” Many of the students are avid Penguins fans and this program has built off of that passion to make learning fun. Teachers enjoy the fact that lessons can be self-paced, allowing students who are advanced to go at a faster pace and students who need more time to move without being rushed. The review exams at the end of each section also give students immediate feedback on their learning progress. “I love how Future Goals makes real life connections to show us how math is used in real life settings all over the world,” said another STEAM class student. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of hockey while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. If you’re a 5th-8th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

MITES MAKING MEMORIES

AT THE JAM

The second annual Mite Jamboree (The JAM) was another actionpacked, exciting and fun-filled weekend at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. The tournament, which ran Jan. 14–15, showcased the development of youth hockey in the United States. Teams from Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania were spread across three divisions of skill competing for the chance to win. The rinks were packed with 48 teams competing in games starting at 8:00AM Saturday and concluding with the championships on Sunday night. Each coach taught a different style of play and came from various youth hockey associations of different sizes. Some teams brought older and bigger players while others brought faster and smaller players. With a variety of teams to compete against, the atmosphere was exhilarating. Fans were cheering every minute of the game and the stands erupted with every big play. The sportsmanship of the players, coaches, and fans was a sight to behold as the weekend was truly focused on the spirit of hockey. Participating in the tournament was the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in-house program the Lil’ 66ers. Part of the Penguins Mite Development League, the first year program fielded eight teams in the tournament and showcased their skills as well as their love for the game of hockey. The Lil’ 66ers program is a full season mite program complete with monthly practices and games. With the region developing and producing top-level hockey talent at a rate higher than ever, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the community are building a new foundation for skill development at the highest standards. Using the same facility as the Pittsburgh Penguins, the players were given a once in a lifetime opportunity to make new friends and memories. Although the players may not realize it now, the second annual Mite Jamboree may be something they will remember as adults. 70

Penguins Profile:

EVGENI MALKIN

Mark Madden

If Evgeni Malkin was ever not part of the conversation concerning hockey’s very best player, he didn’t stay out of it long. Malkin has only had one NHL season where he averaged under a point per game, namely his injury-curtailed 2010-11 effort. Malkin had just nine goals in 31 games during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 campaign. But mostly, Malkin’s career is a model of consistency with liberal dashes of brilliance. Witness 129 points in 124 career Stanley Cup playoff games. Malkin hit the 800-point mark for his career with a power-play goal at New Jersey on Dec. 27. Malkin reached that plateau in just his 680th game. This season, Malkin made further certain his name is mentioned with hockey’s elite by posting 18 goals and 28 assists in his first 42 games, tying him with teammate Sidney Crosby for second among NHL scorers as of Jan. 14. Even when the Penguins’ form dipped with three straight losses in midJanuary, Malkin had a point in each of those games, including two goals. Not that Malkin was satisfied. “If we’re a good team, and we want to play in the playoffs and be better, we have to start the next game and play right,” Malkin said after the Penguins lost 6-3 at Detroit on Jan. 14. Malkin’s second-period goal had given the Penguins a 2-0 lead. “I’m frustrated. I’m not happy with my game. A few goals they scored, I lost my [man]. We’re a good team. We need to play better.” The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Malkin might not be able to play a lot better. As coach Mike Sullivan said, “Geno’s been great. He’s quietly had a dynamic year for us offensively. He’s as good as offensive threat as there is in the league.” As of the loss at Detroit, Malkin hadn’t gone more than two games without a point all season, and he’d done that just twice. continued on page 79

continued from page 77

Penalties were a problem earlier in the season, particularly those in the offensive zone. While Malkin still led the Penguins with 50 penalty minutes after the team’s first 42 games, he committed just four infractions in the last 15 contests. Malkin, 30, skated with a plethora of linemates in the season’s first half. He kept adjusting, and kept producing. His work on the power play was particularly impressive: Malkin ranked 10th in the NHL with 16 manadvantage points, 12th with seven power-play goals. Malkin was upset with his showing at the World Cup of Hockey. He had three points in four games as Russia went 2-2, exiting in the semifinals by losing to Canada. “After the World Cup, I’m [mad] at myself,” Malkin said. “I didn’t play great. I want back to my level. I know I can play better every game. I can play at my highest level. I have a lot of energy. I want to be a top forward every game.” Malkin’s energy is sapped a bit by his infant son, Nikita. Malkin and his wife, Anna, welcomed their first child during last year’s Stanley Cup Final. “No restaurants anymore. No going out. Stay at home,” Malkin said. “But it’s good. I like it. I’m 30 years old. I’m pretty old. “I like it because my son’s moving more. He has energy. Like, a lot. I don’t rest. I’m moving with him all day.” Jan. 1-7 was the Penguins’ bye week. Malkin and his family went to Miami. “It was a good vacation,” Malkin said. “Go to the pool. Chilling all day. Play with my son. I like it.”

Bullard began his professional hockey career when he was drafted ninth overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1980 NHL Draft. During his time in Pittsburgh, the forward recorded four 30-goal campaigns. Despite the team’s struggles during the 1983-84 season, Bullard was still able to tally a career-high 51 goals — which earned him a trip to that year’s NHL All-Star Game. The Ottawa native played six seasons with the Penguins — serving as a team captain during his stint here — before getting traded to the Calgary Flames halfway through the 1986-87 season. 93

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as a blueprint for other NHL and professional organizations since its creation in 2010. In partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the program has helped reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes.

Since 2011, the Heads UP Pittsburgh has had great results in the youth sports community. n Over 125,000 individual players, coaches, and parents have been impacted by the free baseline testing and educational programs n Athletes in 30+ sports have been tested through funding from the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation n Over 12,000 conditioning aids, including flexibility kits, neck strengthening kits, and core strength balance discs have been distributed n New pediatric version of the baseline test targeted for athletes ages seven to nine is now available

In 2015, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit introduced the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation (PFF) STEAM Lending Library to schools districts in Allegheny County. This oneof-a-kind, first in the nation, program has given students the opportunity to explore technology that they may have never had access to otherwise. Stressing the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) learning in the region, the Library gives teachers the opportunity to borrow technology to use in their classrooms. The PPF STEAM Lending Library contains nearly 1,000 items, and to date, has impacted educators from 40 schools districts in Allegheny County.

Entering its third year, Tablets in Education has provided elementary students in 11 counties the opportunity to enhance their education through technology. Since its inception in 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has donated over 3,900 Kindle Fire tablets to over 200 school districts and special needs programs in the region; impacting over 100,000 students. Along with the support from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Tablets in Education continues to change the way students in our region learn. MIKE LANGE Penguins Radio Network Play-by-Play Announcer

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 42nd season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE Penguins Radio Network Color Analyst

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 14th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey. 111

JOSH GETZOFF Radio Broadcast Host and PensTV Host

Josh Getzoff is in his second season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the sports director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Getzoff covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, he was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Getzoff has also worked as a sports anchor/reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. HOCKEY ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.

DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea!

118

2.

NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!

3.

Keep your eyes on the puck! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!

4.

PPG Paints Arena is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

5.

It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!

6.

Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

Since 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered to build a total of 12 dek hockey rinks for local communities through their unique Project Power Play program. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative that was designed to build one dozen dek rinks in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities over a four-year period. To support the program, Highmark provided $1.5 million in funding. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation also provided funding for the project. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities provided the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. The rinks are multi-purpose courts and are suitable for hockey and other sports; including, soccer and lacrosse. All rink sites were chosen based on a community’s need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming. Citiparks and local athletic associations continue to program the rinks, with the assistance from the Penguins organization.

BUMPS

IN THE ROAD Mike Prisuta

The Penguins did something in the second week of January they hadn’t done since head coach Mike Sullivan’s first week on the job. Losses at Washington (5-2 on Jan. 11) and at Ottawa (4-1 on Jan. 12) were the first consecutive setbacks in regulation the Penguins had suffered since Dec. 14–19, 2015, when they dropped Sullivan’s first four games behind the bench. The Penguins became the last team in the NHL to lose consecutive games in regulation this season. They emerged from a subsequent 6-3 defeat on Jan. 14 at Detroit third in the Metropolitan Division and sixth in the NHL’s overall standings, so it wasn’t as if the sky had begun to fall. But the season’s first three-game regulation losing streak provided reminders for the Penguins as to why they had gone so long without suffering back-to-back, 60-minute losses in the first place, and about how such bumps in the road needed to be addressed. The specific nuances of the losing streak included: Penalty-killing: The Penguins killed just eight of 13 opposing power-play opportunities in the three games against Washington, Ottawa and Detroit (61.5 percent), including only five of nine against the Capitals and Senators. “Our penalty-killing has to improve,” Sullivan said after the Ottawa game. “We can’t give up (power-play) goals night in and night out and expect to sustain winning. A big part of winning games is making sure your special teams are helping you win.” 164

Taking too many penalties: “They have a great power play, a lot of skilled players,” defenseman Ian Cole said of the Senators. “Pretty much any team in this league does. Any time you put them out there, they’re going to get chances to score. And they’re going to be good enough hockey players to score goals when they get chances. “As much as we want the PK to be great, taking too many penalties is not going to help that.” Producing more on offense: The Penguins averaged just two goals per game against the Caps, Senators and Red Wings: “I don’t think with any team we’re worried about scoring,” center Nick Bonino said. “I think we know we have guys who can score. We just have to generate a little more.” Playing from ahead, not behind: “We’d like to be more proactive and dictate the terms out there,” Sullivan said in response to the 2-0 deficits the Penguins found themselves facing in the first 10 minutes against Washington and Ottawa. “I don’t know if its necessarily a certain trend you can identify because it’s happened different ways, whether it be early penalties or just maybe the mindset going into the drop of the puck, not being reactionary and being proactive.” continued on page 167

Continuing to hone their collective game for the playoffs: “We want to try to continue to push, to climb in the standings,” Sullivan said. “We’re in a competitive division and every game is important here. The closer we get to April, the more important the games become. Our players are well aware of it.” And last, but not least, understanding and embracing the proper response when a losing streak occurs: “I always think it goes back to leadership and we have strong leadership in our room,” Sullivan said. “These guys know what it takes to win. We just have to make sure we go show it through our action. I think our players respond the right way in difficult circumstances. We want to be a team that responds the right way if we don’t get the results we’re looking for on any given night.

“These guys come to the rink every day, they’re driven guys, they want to push and challenge each other to get better. They’re not satisfied, they have an appetite for the game. We are what we repeatedly do, we’re all creatures of habit. And when these guys come to the rink with the motivation they come to the rink with on a daily basis, certainly as their coach or their coaching staff, we find a certain comfort level in knowing these guys are willing to put the time in and make the sacrifices to get better.”

FROM THE BACKYARD

TO THE NHL Nicole Jelinek

Ian Cole has proven himself to be a valuable player in the NHL and in the Penguins lineup. His love for the game has been with him for as long as he can remember. His father, Doug, is an avid hockey fan and enjoyed playing the game himself. He introduced Cole to the sport when he was about two-years-old and from there, the drive to play the game started. Cole recalls wanting to play hockey all day, every day, so his dad built a rink in the backyard of their home in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He would come home from school and play for hours. “That is where you kind of build that love for the game,” Cole said with a smile. “Then it just went from there.” Cole played college hockey at Notre Dame and was taken in the first round (18th overall) by St. Louis in the 2007 NHL Draft heading into his junior year. Cole played all four years with the Fighting Irish before making his NHL debut with the Blues in the 2010-11 season. After spending parts of five seasons in St. Louis, the Penguins acquired Cole from the Blues for Robert Bortuzzo and a 2016 seventh-round pick on March 2, 2015. Cole appreciated his time playing in St. Louis, but says that enough can’t be said for the opportunity and successes he has had as a Penguin.

“Coming here and within a few years going all the way to win the Stanley Cup, it was awesome,” Cole said. “It was a fantastic feeling with a great group of guys.” However, there were still some more bumps in the road for Cole. During his tenure in St. Louis, he was a healthy scratch at times with the incredible depth they had on the blue line there. He dealt with that same situation in Pittsburgh as well during the 2015-16 season, spending 11 straight games as a healthy scratch from Jan. 3 to Feb. 20. But Cole kept working and eventually returned to the lineup, where he ended up settling in on a pair with Justin Schultz and developing into arguably the team’s best penalty killer. The Cole-Schultz pairing was successful throughout the playoffs last year, and the duo has continued their dominance through this season. It’s been a breakthrough year for Cole, who has been terrific at both ends of the ice. He’s already established new career highs with 13 assists and 15 points as of Jan. 16 (his previous best was 12) and even had a four-game point streak from Nov. 30-Dec. 5. During that time, Cole registered three straight multi-point games for the first time in his career and became the first Penguins D-man not named Kris Letang to accomplish that since Ryan Whitney in 2007. “I think we’re doing a lot of good things defensively and that provides the opportunities to go offensively,” Cole said. “I think we were playing really well before we were getting the points. But it’s nice to see that translate to the scoresheet for sure.” continued on page 182

Cole has certainly been putting up the points as of late, but the most memorable score of his career came in Game Four of the Stanley Cup Final against San Jose. Cole was able to score his first career NHL playoff goal and ended a 104game goalless drought when he knocked in a rebound off a Phil Kessel shot. This gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead in the first period, and they went on to win 3-1 to come within a game of clinching the Stanley Cup. When they won it all, Cole said, “It was a fantastic day, and I think I wouldn’t have changed anything.” After the Penguins won, Cole brought Lord Stanley’s Cup to where his hockey career all started. It was exciting for him to bring the Cup to his local rink and favorite hometown spots. “It was awesome,” recalled Cole, who also got to take the Stanley Cup to the Notre Dame-Nevada college football game on Sept. 10 along with teammate Bryan Rust. “Having all of my buddies there and my family was great. It was a special day that I was very fortunate to be able to share with a lot of people.” Being from Michigan, Cole grew up a Red Wings fan and has crossed enemy lines to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins. “You don’t get to pick and chose which team you play for,” Cole chuckled. “I have the same answer I would have had as a kid about hockey. I wanted to be in the NHL regardless of what team I was playing for. I love the game and it is an honor to be here in the NHL.”

KENNEDY, MALONE

SPARK THIRD-PERIOD RALLY

IN PENGUINS-FLYERS ALUMNI GAME Jason Seidling The Alumni showdown was a precursor to the Feb. 25 Stadium Series matchup between the Penguins and Flyers at Heinz Field. Professional athletes are some of the most competitive people on earth. Even after they step away from the game, anytime they return to action, those competitive juices return instinctively. And just in case that competitiveness didn’t come back right away, Penguins’ alumni team head coach Eddie Johnston made sure it would when he delivered his pre-game speech before Saturday night’s alumni contest against the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center: “Be competitive AND have a little bit of fun.” Johnston’s squad accomplished both directives, twice rebounding from a pair of two-goal deficits to score three times in the third period to escape with a 3-3 tie.

Ryan Malone scored twice, and Tyler Kennedy notched the equalizing tally with four minutes remaining in regulation, snapping a shot over the glove of Brian Boucher. Jocelyn Thibault made sure Kennedy’s goal held up as the tying marker by stoning John LeClair and Mikael Renberg in the closing seconds. The Penguins’ third-period rally was sparked by Johnston refusing to give in when defeat might have seemed inevitable, instead electing to shorten his bench and go with some of his younger skaters, led by Malone, Kennedy and Colby Armstrong, during the final frame. “You have to shorten the bench a little bit, add a little speed,” Johnston said with a wink afterwards. Philadelphia jumped ahead to that 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Dave Brown, Daniel Briere (yes, he was on-sides when he scored this time) and Eric Desjardins.

Malone, who had slid his own rebound into the net for Pittsburgh’s first goal, got the Penguins within one when he tucked a backhand under a sprawled Boucher after being set up with a Kennedy feed. Moments later, Kennedy, a hero of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship, sped down the right wing past a Flyers defenseman before beating Boucher. “I saw an opening and I just tried to shoot it as hard as I could,” Kennedy said. Just as important to Pittsburgh’s cause as its young legs was the goaltending tandem of Thibault and starter Jean-Sebastien Aubin, who each turned in several highlight-reel saves. “Our goalkeepers were phenomenal,” Johnston said. “We needed that.” As ecstatic as the Penguins were about escaping with the draw, they were even more impressed with the show put on by the Flyers and their fans throughout the evening. Not only did Wells Fargo Center attract a capacity crowd of 19,727, but the fans were engaged throughout, with many on their feet in the waning moments when Thibault saved the Penguins with his acrobatics. From the get-go, the Flyers and their game entertainment staff gave an A-plus effort. Between having players from both squads introduced through a fog machine to the touching dedication to all the deceased Flyers alumni from the team’s first 50 years, this night was something the participants won’t soon forget. “That blew me away,” Armstrong said. “From the introductions to the fans to the guys out there, it was just amazing. I don’t think you can do a better job.” continued on page 191

continued from page 189

“I have played in alumni games where there is 200-300 people, so this was amazing,” Phil Bourque added. “I thought the Flyers put on a great presentation. I thought the fans were awesome. When have you ever said that?” The alumni game was Philadelphia’s signature event of its 50th season celebration, and a precursor to the Penguins-Flyers NHL Stadium Series game that will be played on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Heinz Field.

Like Father, Like Son One of the more interesting storylines from the alumni game was the father-son combos that took part. Greg Malone, Pittsburgh’s leading scorer in 1978-79, had planned to participate in the alumni game on the coaching staff, but he quickly called an audible once he heard that his son, Ryan Malone, would be suiting up. “Once I heard Ryan was playing, I said what the heck I’m going to play,” Greg Malone said. “I’m getting up there in age, so this might be my only chance to play with him.” The younger Malone, who led the wave of Pittsburgh-born players that have invaded the NHL over the last decade, was equally as thrilled to take a few shifts with his dad. continued on page 192

continued on page 191

“It’s going to be really fun to be able to get out there together,” Ryan Malone said following Saturday’s morning skate. Jamie and Reggie Leach also shared the ice for together, but in a different fashion than the Malones. Jamie, who skated for Pittsburgh from 1989-93 and was a contributor to the Penguins’ Cup wins in 1991 and ’92, got to face his father, Reggie, a 1975 Stanley Cup champion and the 1976 Conn Smythe Trophy winner for the Flyers. “That was the first time we played against one another, so it was pretty special,” Jamie Leach said. “Growing up here in Philadelphia, it was huge for me to play in this game against not only my dad, but (Bob) Clarke and (Bill) Barber, two players I grew up idolizing.” Both Leaches factored into the scoring summary. Jamie set up Ryan Malone’s first goal, while Reggie had the secondary helper on Eric Desjardins’ tally.

Flyers’ Roster Featured Several Ex-Penguins

Philadelphia’s playing roster for the alumni game included three players with ties to the Penguins. Defenseman Kjell Samuelsson was acquired by Craig Patrick and the Penguins from the Flyers in February 1992 alongside Rick Tocchet and Ken Wregget. Samuelsson was a major contributor as a shutdown presence on Pittsburgh’s ‘92 Stanley Cup championship squad. Orest Kindrachuk, a forward who won two Cups with the Flyers in 1974 and ’75, was Pittsburgh’s captain from 1978-81. Rounding out the trio was power forward John LeClair, who in 2005-06 joined Mark Recchi as Sidney Crosby’s first-ever linemates.
