HAPPY NEW YEAR: Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek went 5-0 with a 1.39 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage in his first five starts of 2016.

FIRST GOAL MATTERS: The Flyers lost a shootout to the Rangers, 3-2, on Jan. 16, but Philadelphia still managed to extend its streak of getting at least a point when scoring the first goal to five consecutive games (4-0-1). Through 42 games the Flyers had scored the first goal 19 times and had gone 13-4-2 in those contests.

FIRST GOAL REALLY MATTERS: The Blackhawks’ 30-13-4 record through 47 games included a record of 27-3-2 when scoring the first goal and an NHLleading 42 first-period goals.

HOME SWEET DC: The Capitals hosted the Rangers on Jan. 17 having won 11 consecutive games at home, which tied Calgary’s 11-game effort as the longest

winning streak at home in the NHL this season. The Caps had outscored their opponents 45-19 during the streak and had converted at a 35.3-percent rate on the power play (12-for-34). Washington went 17-3-1 overall at home on the way to a 33-8-3 record through 44 games for an NHL-best .833 points percentage at home.

CLIMBING THE LADDER: RW Jaromir Jagr led the Panthers in scoring (15+17) through Florida’s first 44 games and the Panthers’ 26-13-5 record included a 10-1-1 mark when Jagr scored a goal. The Panthers took on the Lightning on Jan. 16 with Jagr positioned as the NHL’s active leader in games played (1,591), goals (737), assists (1,097), points (1,834), power-play goals (207) and power-play points (592). At that juncture Jagr, 43, was three assists from becoming the sixth player in NHL history to reach the 1,100 plateau in that category, four goals shy of tying Brett Hull (741) for third all-time in that department and 16 points away from matching Gordie Howe (1,850) for No. 3 on the NHL’s all-time points list.

THE SERIES [VS] CANUCKS

On Jan. 23 the Penguins host the Vancouver Canucks, the second and final game between the teams this season. On Nov. 4 in Vancouver, Pittsburgh earned a 3-2 victory behind goals from Sidney Crosby, David Perron and Eric Fehr. Fehr’s goal came shorthanded at 10:12 of the third period, his second short-handed goal in as many games in a Penguins’ uniform, and it proved to be the game-winner as Daniel Sedin and Jannik Hansen scored goals in the final 6:01 of the game for the Canucks. . . The Penguins have won five of the last seven games between the teams. . . Five of Pittsburgh’s last six wins over Vancouver have been by a single goal. . . The Canucks have had some success recently in Pittsburgh, going 5-1-1 in their last seven games here. Pittsburgh’s only regulation win in that span came on Nov. 17, 2010 (3-1). . . Vancouver has missed on 11 straight power play chances here in Pittsburgh since Henrik Sedin beat Marc-Andre Fleury on Jan. 16, 2006. . . Daniel Sedin has five goals and 12 points in 16 career games against Pittsburgh, while Henrik Sedin has three goals and 15 points in 16 career games. . . On Jan. 26 the Penguins will host the New Jersey Devils in their third game in four days. The Penguins have lost two straight games to the Devils and three of their last four, including a 4-0 shutout loss this season in New Jersey on Nov. 14. Cory Schneider made 21 saves in that game while former Penguins Bobby Farnham and Lee Stempniak scored for New Jersey. Mike Cammalleri had a goal and two assists in that victory. . . The Penguins were also blanked in their last game against New Jersey last season and have gone exactly 120 minutes without a goal against the Devils since Simon Despresâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; OT goal in New Jersey on Jan. 30, 2015 gave Pittsburgh a 2-1 victory. . . Each of the last four games between the teams were played in New Jersey; their last meeting here was Dec. 2, 2014, a 1-0 Pittsburgh win behind 29 saves from Marc-Andre Fleury and a third-period goal by Evgeni Malkin. . . The Penguins have won four straight home games against the Devils and six of their last seven. . . New Jersey has scored a total of five goals in their last four games here, while the Penguins have scored a total of four goals in their last five games overall against New Jersey. . . Everyone was going crazy and Malkin scored a goal on a breakaway at the top of the point and she jumped out of her skin screaming, “Dad, now I know why people love playoff hockey!” The other is Michael’s wife, Rochelle, and daughter, Emily, at a Penguins game. when my son’s hockey team got the chance to play in a tournament at CONSOL Energy Center. He got to walk on the ice through Suite 66 and was so excited to play at the same place as the Penguins. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME RITUALS? My kids all refuse to leave our seats until we hear the Three Stars of the Game and listen to the post-game interview with Dan Potash! I remember when we came back from a 3-1 game deficit during the run to the Cup in ’92, I won several bets on that series. Then in ’09, we were back up there for a reunion weekend for Game Seven on Friday night. We were in front of a big screen TV at Café 210 on College Ave.

With about a month left in the 2015-16 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League, teams are battling for positioning in the standings. Varsity A, AA, and AAA teams are in the hunt for the Pennsylvania Cup as the five month regular season approaches its end. Currently, the Montour Spartans lead the Varsity A league and Western Conference with 15 games played and 27 points. Although, the West Allegheny Indians are putting pressure on the Spartans. Trailing by only one point, West Allegheny is seeking to take the top spot in the league. The Franklin Regional Panthers sit atop the Eastern Conference with a total of 24 points on the season. Nicholas Paone, leads the league between the pipes for the Panthers with an 8-1 record, as well as a 2.22 goals-against-average. The Armstrong River Hawks have the lead in the Varsity AA league and Eastern Conference with a total of 26 points in 16 games played. The River Hawks also lead the league in the goals for category with a total of 95 on the season. The battle for the top spot in the Western Conference continues between the Mars Planets and the Moon Tigers. Tyler Spreng has had a phenomenal season in goal for Mars with a 12-3 record and a league leading 2.03 goals-against-average. Within the Varsity AAA league, the Peters Township Indians currently hold a 5 point lead for the top spot in the standings. With a 9-1-4 record, Matt Amelio leads his team in points with 19 on the season (5+14). Trailing closely behind the Indians are the Butler Golden Tornados and the North Allegheny Tigers tied with 17 points on the season. The Butler Golden Tornados have the two top point leaders in the AAA league, Connor Scott and Trevor Gilliland.

This past off-season, GM Jim Rutherford acquired a bunch of bottom-six centers: Nick Bonino, Eric Fehr and Matt Cullen joined the Penguins within 10 days of each other. Fehr got a late start, missing the season’s first 10 games while recovering from elbow surgery. Once he started active duty as a Penguin, Fehr played mostly wing. But Bonino suffered a hand injury in the Penguins’ 3-2 overtime loss at Carolina on Jan. 12. He’s projected to be out until at least early February. That puts Fehr at center, and he has no problem with that. “It’s definitely the position I feel more comfortable at,” Fehr said. “Obviously, it’s going to be a bit of a change. You always get into a rhythm at whatever position you play, where you’re really not thinking. You’re just moving. You’re just reacting. “When you switch positions, you have to try to get back in that groove again. It takes a game to get your routes back, and your timing back.” The Manitoba native thinks center is more demanding, and more fun. “It really is a different game in the middle than it is on the wing,” said Fehr. “It’s a lot more skating. It’s a 200-foot game. It’s a lot more read and react. “At wing, it’s pretty textbook. You know exactly where you have to be at all times. That’s the fun thing about playing center. You get to make your own reads and move around the ice.” Fehr, 30, will also have to get used to taking faceoffs again. Heading into the Penguins’ Feb. 15 game at Tampa Bay, Fehr had taken 104 draws, winning 43.3 percent. “You can practice [faceoffs] as much as you want, but once you get into a game it’s a lot different,” said the 6-foot-4, 212-pounder. “It’s just a big game of rock, paper, scissors against the other team’s centermen. That’s part of the battle. Once you get the first one, it’s mind games the rest of the way.” Fehr is a big part of the Penguins’ successful penalty-killing unit. Before the game at Tampa Bay, the PK ranked fifth in the NHL with a success rate of 84.8 percent. They had killed 27 straight penalties before Carolina netted on the PP in OT Jan. 12. “We really enjoy going out there and trying to get some momentum for our team. We take a lot of pride in it,” Fehr said. “It’s unfortunate the [PK] streak came to an end, especially the way continued on page 31

it did. But we’re going to try to start a new one. “We take a lot of pride in the streaks, and the percentage, and moving up the PK standings. Your 5-on-5 play gets better when you get big kills.” Fehr tallied five goals and two assists in his first 32 games this season. Three of those goals were short-handed, establishing a career high. Fehr debuted with the Penguins in scintillating fashion, scoring shorties in each of his first two games: Oct. 31 at Toronto and Nov. 4 at Vancouver. Fehr had 19 goals and 14 assists in 75 games with Washington last season. Stat-wise, he’s off to a slow start with the Penguins, but he’s not discouraged. “I definitely feel a little more confident,” Fehr said. “I feel like my legs are under me now. It definitely takes a while to get up to speed when you miss training camp. I haven’t had the best luck scoring goals, but I feel like I’m getting good chances, and that’s all you can ask for.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

Jason Botterill is in his second season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WB/S Penguins have made the playoffs all six years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 39, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. MIKE SULLIVAN HEAD COACH

Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Assistant coach Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization. In his current role, he oversees the club’s defensemen and its penalty killing unit. Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams was a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses. A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND BROADCASTING

Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder. Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond. Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

During all Penguins home games, the 3 FOR $5 Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will host 10 FOR $10 a 50/50 RAFFLE. From the raffle, one lucky fan will go home with 50 percent of 40 FOR $20 the night’s collection. The remainder of the proceeds will be distributed to local 501c3 charities through a grant process. During the 2014-15 Penguins season, the Foundation donated more than $760,000 to over 80 local 501c3 charities with the funds raised from the 50/50 RAFFLE. OPERATION SHOEBOX In December, staff members from all departments of the Penguins’ organization created beautifully wrapped shoebox Christmas presents for the senior residents at Manor Care Nursing Home in McMurray. Over 60 shoebox gifts were donated by Penguins staff, each filled with a variety of newly purchased items suited for a seniors’ lifestyle. On December 15, Penguins staff delivered the shoebox gifts to Manor Care, meeting the residents as they distributed the Christmas gifts. Operation Shoebox was once again a huge success and a great time was had by the seniors and staff alike!

We took a minute to chat with second-year Penguins forward Bryan Rust after he was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Jan. 7. Here’s our conversation. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLAYING IN THE AHL VERSUS THE NHL? Things happen a little bit faster. Guys are a little bit more skilled and defensively responsible. They’re always in the right position and they’ve got really good sticks and really good body position, which makes it hard to get any open space or time with the puck. YOU SCORED A BIG GOAL IN PITTSBURGH’S 3-1 WIN AT MONTREAL ON JAN. 9. WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR HEAD WHEN YOU CAUGHT THAT PUCK IN THE SLOT? I was told before the game if I get a chance, shoot high glove or high blocker. So as soon as I got the puck I was like, “I’m shooting high blocker. I don’t care where he’s at, I’m shooting it there.” So, I picked my head up a little bit, and I was able to pick my spot. DID YOU PLAY ANY OTHER SPORTS GROWING UP? Football and lacrosse were my two big organized sports, and I played a lot of golf growing up. I still play golf, but hockey was always number one. HOW HAVE YOU LIKED LIVING IN PITTSBURGH COMPARED TO MICHIGAN? It’s pretty comparable. The weather is pretty much the same, which at times is good and other times it isn’t. Pittsburgh is a good balance between big city life as well as not feeling too congested and crammed in a big city. WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING ONE OF THE YOUNGEST PLAYERS ON THE TEAM? It’s definitely fun seeing guys with families and wives and kids and things like that. It shows me that I have an opportunity to learn a lot from these guys, because they’ve been around the game for such a long time that they’ve probably been through all the same things that I’ve been through, and that’s something I can learn from.

HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the Sports Director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Evgeni Malkin has been sensational in 3-on-3 overtime this year, and said he’s looking forward to playing alongside fellow Russian Alex Ovechkin — the captain of the Metropolitan Division team — in that format during the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 31 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. As long as they have a conversation beforehand. “He’s a skilled guy, but we need to talk before the game about how we play because ‘Ovi’ doesn’t backcheck,” Malkin joked. “If he stays on the blue line it’s a little bit hard. But we’ll see. I think it will be fine. But I hope we win.” It helps that Malkin will have Penguins teammate Kris Letang on his team in the tournament, which will feature three 20-minute games. Each of the 44 NHL players selected were divided into four teams by division, with each squad having 11 players. All 30 NHL teams have to send at least one representative. The All-Star Skills Competition will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 7:00PM on NBC Sports Network. It will be a matchup between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference All-Stars, with the winning conference earning the right to select when their semifinal matchup will be played — first or second on Sunday. The broadcast begins on 5:00PM. that day, also on NBC Sports Network. Letang said while “it’s fun to see your name on that list,” he wasn’t thinking he would be selected. But Malkin said it’s an honor the defenseman deserves. “He had a couple injuries this year but the last five games he’s played amazing,” Malkin said after practice on Jan. 11 at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “Lots of points, tough playing time. Very important defenseman on our team. Of course he deserves it.” Malkin then stopped, grinned and added, “I’m glad I’m not by myself.” This is the sixth consecutive All-Star Game that the Penguins have had multiple players voted into the game, but Malkin won’t just be joined by Letang. Danny Kroll, will join Nashville’s equipment staff assisting players during the weekend. But all jokes aside, Malkin truly appreciates the honor of being selected to the game. And it’s one he absolutely deserves as well, as he has been one of the leading catalysts to the team’s success all year long. He led the Penguins with 42 points and 19 goals as of Jan. 15 and is on pace for career highs in several categories, which is saying a lot when you’re a former league MVP and scoring champion. “It’s hard [to be one of the players chosen],” Malkin said. “It’s hard always. But it’s a good time with friends, get to see a couple Russian players — Ovi, (Vladimir) Tarasenko. It’s a good time. I know it’s Nashville, which is a pretty good city. Couple good restaurants. It’s exciting. I want to say thank you to my fans who voted for me. It’s really appreciated. Looking forward to it. I want to play.” This is the sixth All-Star selection of Malkin’s career. Among Penguins players, only Mario Lemieux (13 selections) and Jaromir Jagr (9) have been selected to play in more All-Star Games than Malkin. Malkin has suited up for three All-Star Games, tallying two points (1G-1A) in 2012 at Ottawa; scoring his first All-Star Game goal in 2009 at Montreal; and collecting two assists in his debut contest in Atlanta in 2008. Malkin missed last year’s game in Columbus and the 2011 contest in Carolina due to injury. Meanwhile, this is Letang’s third selection. Paul Coffey (five appearances) is the only defenseman with more appearances than Letang in club history. Letang collected one assist at the 2012 AllStar Game in Ottawa and scored a pair of goals in his first game in Carolina in 2011.

In a Penguins locker room full of decorated players and elite talent, it is a difficult task to always be playing at a high level on a nightly basis. Those that can sustain a higher level of play over an extended period of time, in this case the first half of the 82-game season, are granted a fun, new opportunity. Unlike in past All-Star appearances for Malkin — headed to his sixth All-Star Game — and for Letang — his third All-Star nod — the players will compete alongside their division rivals in a 3-on-3 tournament versus the league’s other three divisions’ collection of stars. “I can’t wait see how it is going to turn out,” Letang said. “The [3-on-3 overtime] has been exciting for everyone in the regular season, I can’t wait to see how it turns out in the All-Star format.” The 28-year-old defenseman is headed to his third All-Star Game in his ninth full season in the NHL and trails only Paul Coffey (5) in All-Star selections among Penguins defensemen. Certainly a part of Letang’s offensive success can be attributed to his work together alongside Malkin on the Penguins top powerplay unit. Malkin has been Pittsburgh’s driving force offensively in 2015-16, racking up a team-leading 39 (19G-20A) points in the team’s first 42 games. His numbers stack up with league leaders in multiple offensive categories this season including power-play goals (nine PPGs, T-4th), home goals (15, 4th) and game-winning goals (five, T-5th). But the most telling stat for Malkin’s All-Star weekend expectations? He has tallied twice in the 3-on-3 overtime period for Pittsburgh, and is one of just 14 players in the NHL with two or more overtime goals. “I’m really looking forward to it,” Malkin said. “It is a good time with friends and I’ll get to see some other Russian players. But 3-on-3 is a hard game because there is so much ice and we play against [Patrick] Kane and other really skilled guys.” The good company they’ll share on the ice is one Letang said he is honored to be a part. “It is always a great weekend and it’s fun to see your name on that list.” For both players, the opportunity to participate in the new All-Star 3-on-3 tournament will present a fun twist on the normal happenings of All-Star weekend. The NHL’s shift to 3-on-3 overtime this season has delivered the anticipated edge-of-your seat excitement in arenas from Florida to the West Coast via breathtaking rushes, sudden-transition oddman rushes and scoring chances by the boat load. It’s been thrilling, to be certain. But it’s also been difficult to get a handle on in terms of tactics and tendencies for players and coaches. It’s been more combustible than easy to script or control. “There is a lot of chance,” Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan acknowledged after a 5-4 overtime loss on Jan. 15 in Tampa. He was talking about a general randomness that has accompanied 3-on-3 overtime more than all those opportunities to put the puck in the net. The scoring chances that have been generated by the new extra-session protocol had been anticipated by many. “It’s going to be fun to play,” Penguins winger Phil Kessel had predicted back in September. “It’s pretty wide open. I think it’s going to create a lot more goals this year.” Winger Chris Kunitz was in complete agreement with that theory prior to the start of the season. “Defense is obviously harder when you’re playing 1-on-1 all over the ice,” Kunitz had suggested. “When you have the puck you’re trying to be creative and skating toward the net making continued on page 155

lanes for guys and I think that’s going to open up a lot of offensive abilities for everybody.” But … “If you get stuck out there on an extended shift or they make a change you’re going to be pretty winded out there,” Kunitz added. “If you have possession, don’t give it away. Let two guys change and then you change. It’ll be something we’ll be figuring out as it’s kind of experienced out there.” The Penguins’ early experiences with 3-on-3 were as favorable as they had been action-packed. They beat Florida, 3-2 in overtime, on Oct. 20. They won at Nashville on an extra-session goal, 2-1, on Oct. 24. And they had St. Louis singing the blues, 4-3, via a goal in overtime on Nov. 25. But the setback in Tampa was the Penguins’ fourth straight loss suffered in the five minutes of the 3-on-3 play that precedes shootouts this season. The only constant, seemingly, had been the unpredictability of how the final results had been achieved. When it’s three skaters apiece and there’s all that open ice, a game can be decided on a misstep, on a bad bounce, on a deflection or on a pass or shot that’s just off target. Such things factor into results attained during 5-on-5 play as well, but in 3-on-3 OT they seem to be magnified. “All we can do is try to coach the details,” Sullivan said. “And I think the biggest part of those overtimes is trying to make sure that you change the right way.” Getting players on and off the ice in an appropriate fashion has proven nothing less than essential in overtime. So has puck management, especially as it relates to players paying even more attention to proper shot selection. “If you don’t, sometimes if you shoot outside the [face-off] dots the rebounds end up starting your opponents’ breakout and, potentially, an odd-man rush the other way,” Sullivan continued. “We’re trying to encourage our guys if they’re going to shoot to shoot from inside the dots. And then we’ve gotta change really smart. We try to encourage our guys to out-change the opponent and if we do that we can keep fresh people on the ice. It’ll give us a chance, I think, for a better outcome.” Beyond that it’s pretty much skate and create and let it fly at the right time. There’s still teamwork involved, but with every potential mistake and bad break more of a potential devastating turn of events because of all the room in which to maneuver, 3-on-3 overtime is proving to be more about bounces and happenstance than structure. This much hasn’t changed: When victory results an enthusiastic celebration ensues. But when the other guys get the goal that makes a shootout unnecessary “it’s frustrating,” Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury admitted. “It’s a little bit more of a team game than a shootout, definitely, but it can go either way. “It sucks when you lose.”

HOCKEY SCHOLAR NEIL ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL Bethel Park School District has committed to creating opportunities for students to develop 21st century technology skills. As part of this commitment, the Penguins’ Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program was introduced to Mr. Rosi’s fifth grade class at Neil Armstrong Middle School. “All of our students have some sort of familiar tie to the Penguins,so bringing this program into the classroom brought instant interest to the topics,” said Mr. Rosi. Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), has become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.

Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. For Pittsburgh Penguins games, all alcohol sales within the arena will conclude at the beginning of the third period. Individual concerts and events are determined on a show-by-show basis.

ATM MACHINES For the convenience of our fans, ATMs are available in CONSOL Energy Center: First Niagara Bank - Outside section 119 and 230, and in the lobby of the Trib Total Media Gate PNC Bank on PNC Legends Level - Outside of party suite 44 and suite 13

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

AUTOMOTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AAA will have a “Puck Truck” at all Penguins home games. The “Puck Truck” is available to assist patrons that have trouble with their vehicles in CONSOL Energy Center lots only. Fans can call 1.800.AAA.HELP after the start of the third period.

BABY CHANGING STATIONS Baby changing stations are available in all restrooms, located on all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

to inform guests of the situation and any instructions as applicable. All exits and emergency exits are posted with appropriate signage.

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: Peoples Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Items lost at events are held in storage for thirty (30) days and then either disposed of or donated to an appropriate charity.

A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. In September 2015, the last North Park McCandless dek rink was completed Paul J. Scuillo II Memorial Park Bloomfield bringing the total Renzie Park McKeesport completed rinks to 12. Richland Community Park Richland Twp. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.
