GETTING HOT AT HOME: Dallas’ 30-14-5 record through 49 games included the Stars having won six of their last eight (6-2-0) and 11 of their last 14 (11-3-0) at American Airlines Arena. Dallas was tied for second in the NHL with 18 home wins in 2015-16 at that juncture (18-6-0). LW Jamie Benn led the way with an NHL-leading 20 goals at home through Dallas’ first 24 games on home ice. The Stars were second in goalsper-game at home (3.38), second with 81 home-ice goals and third with a plus-26 goal differential at home.

A HIT ON THE ISLAND: Islanders LW Matt Martin led the NHL with 221 hits through New York’s first 46 games. Islanders RW and Martin’s linemate Cal Clutterbuck was tied for third in that department with 187. Martin led the NHL in hits in each of the previous four seasons and Clutterbuck topped the league charts in that department in the three seasons that preceded Martin’s

run (from 2008-09 through 2010-11). The Islanders led the league with 1,460 hits while compiling a 25-15-6 record.

STAYING OUT OF THE BOX: Calgary was shorthanded a league-low 109 times through its first 46 games (2.4 times per). The Flames’ ability to stay disciplined included being shorthanded just 56 times in 23 road games (2.4 times per), a figure that also led the league.

MOVIN’ ON UP: Arizona RW Shane Doan passed Luc Robitaille and Scott Mellanby (1,431) and tied Mike Gartner (1,432) for 25th place on the NHL’s all-time games played list in the Coyotes’ 3-2 win over the Kings on Jan. 23.

THREE FOR THE SHOW: The Rangers’ 26-17-5 record through 48 games included a 22-8-3 mark when D Dan Girardi, D Kevin Klein and C Derek Stepan had all been in the lineup at the same time.

THE SERIES [VS] SENATORS

Tonight the Penguins host the Ottawa Senators in a game which features teams that were separated by a single point in the Eastern Conference playoff race in late January. The Penguins have won three of their last four games against Ottawa and are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games against the Senators. . . This is the second matchup between the teams this season, as the Penguins earned a 2-0 home victory on Oct. 15 — their first victory of the season. Evgeni Malkin and Daniel Sprong scored for Pittsburgh that night, Sprong netting his first NHL goal, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 22 saves for the shutout. . . The teams have only one more game this season, that coming April 5 in Ottawa. . . The Penguins have been especially dominant against Ottawa in Pittsburgh recently, going 4-0-1 in their last five since suffering their last regulation loss here, a 5-1 defeat on Jan. 10, 2012 — more than four years ago. Pittsburgh is also 7-1-1 in its last nine home games against the Senators. . . Ottawa has scored a total of eight goals in its last five games here — only five at even strength. . . This is the Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; first game after the NHL All-Star break, a time on the schedule that has treated them well recently. Pittsburgh has won each of its last six games following an All-Star break, its last such loss coming in 2004 here to Boston (3-6). This is the third time the Penguins have faced Ottawa in the first game after the All-Star break, the last one being a 0-0 tie here on Jan. 20, 1998 . . . Malkin and Kris Letang were named as representatives for the Penguins in the All-Star Game last weekend in Nashville. . . Malkinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 10th career regular-season hat trick helped the Penguins to a 5-4 home victory over Vancouver on Jan. 23. Only Mario Lemieux (40) has more. Malkin began the week of the All-Star Game as the seventh-leading scorer in the NHL with 47 points through his first 47 games. . . Crosby was also on a tear, registering a goal in six straight home games, the longest such streak of his career, after getting the game-winner against the Canucks. . . Pittsburgh was 4-1-2 in its last seven games and 5-0-2 in its last seven home games before facing the Devils here Jan. 26 in the final game before the break. . . The Penguins had allowed the opening goal in 12 of their last 15 home games prior to facing the Devils. . . Letang had six goals and 32 points through his first 37 games, including five goals and 18 points in his last 12 games. . . One player whose offensive production has gone to a different level recently is Patric Hornqvist, who had four goals and 13 points in his last 11 games prior to facing New Jersey. . . The Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; win over the Canucks was their third victory this season when trailing after two periods. They did not win a single game in that situation last season. . . Pittsburgh was leading the league in shots per game at 32.4 through 47 games, its highest figure since averaging 33.8 during the 2011-12 season. . . The Penguins will play at Tampa on Friday night and at Florida on Saturday night before returning home to host Anaheim on Feb. 8.

If we are losing by one or two goals or just holding on to a tight lead towards the very end of the game, I will flip an imaginary coin into my hand, keeping my hand wrapped tight until the Penguins come through and win the game! I’m holding onto a 72% conversion rate on this ritual! DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? In ’91 and ‘92, I was in high school, but I didn’t make it to school during the celebration parades! In ’09, I was with my entire family and friends having a few libations and screaming my head off until the last, final, crazy seconds watching Flower in goal. I don’t think I breathed in over a minute at that point. Then I just sank to my knees in thankfulness. IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS, OR HOCKEY IN GENERAL, GREAT? It’s the sport with the toughest players in the world. Where else can you see a hockey player (Dupuis) pull out loose teeth on the bench and head back out for his next shift? The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Hockey program is the premier AAA amateur hockey organization in Western Pennsylvania. The program holds a very strong history of moving both boys and girls hockey players to the next level. Just over the past two seasons alone, 42 players have moved on to play in the NAHL, USHL, and the NCAA (menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s). OLIVIA STOKES, a 5-8 forward from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania played her entire hockey career within the Penguins Elite program. As a graduate from Shadyside Academy, Stokes moved on to play Division II college hockey at Williams College in Massachusetts. As a freshman, Olivia has played in four games with the Williams College Ephs and has scored one goal this season. The team is 11-5 with only eight regular season games remaining. MACKENZIE LANCASTER, a 5-8 forward from Waxhaw, North Carolina received numerous hockey scholarship offers. Lancaster helped lead her Pittsburgh Penguins Elite team to a district championship in 2012 and 2015. After considerations, she moved on to Division I hockey with the Quinnipiac University Bobcats. Currently, Lancaster has played 19 games in her freshman year with the Bobcats in the 2015-2016 season, and has recorded one assist. REAGAN RUST, had played with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program from the U14 level to the U 19 level. In the 2014-15 season, with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U19 team, Rust recorded 23 goals and 15 assists for 38 points in 55 games. The 5-7 forward and defender, has moved on to play college hockey with the RIT Tigers in Rochester, New York. As a freshman, Rust has recorded five goals and 10 assists in 26 games played in her first season with the Tigers.

Phil Kessel has played solid hockey for the Penguins. Kessel has provided his usual fire-wagon skating, as well as a touch for puck distribution not often perceived unless you see him play frequently. He’s been mostly centered by Evgeni Malkin but has also skated with Sidney Crosby, looking comfortable with either of the Penguins’ superstars. Kessel has done well at the left half-wall on the Penguins’ power play. But when GM Jim Rutherford got Kessel from Toronto this past July 1, it was because Kessel scores: 247 goals in 668 NHL games prior to this season. Kessel netted 12 goals in his first 45 games with the Penguins: Not bad, but not up to his standard. Kessel seemed to need something to ignite him. Perhaps the PenguinsPhiladelphia Flyers rivalry did the trick. The 6-foot, 202-pound right winger scored twice Jan. 21 as the Penguins overcame a 2-0 firstintermission deficit to beat the Flyers, 4-3. The victory ended an eight-game losing streak against the Penguins’ cross-state rival. Kessel scored both his goals from close range: He gave the Penguins a 3-2 edge with a power-play tally at 14:06 of the second period, rapping in a cross-crease feed from Sidney Crosby. He extended the lead to 4-2 at 6:20 of the third period, going to the right post to convert Carl Hagelin’s saucer pass. The speedy Hagelin has skated on a line with Malkin and Kessel since being acquired from Anaheim on Jan. 16. “I just tapped ‘em in, right?” said Kessel, smiling. “I missed a couple like that this year, so it’s nice to get them to go in the net.” Kessel added an assist in the Penguins’ next game, a 5-4 home win against Vancouver on Jan. 23. The helper left him with 14 goals and 16 assists in his first 47 games of the season. continued on page 31

Kessel had six shots on goal vs. Philadelphia, and six more against Vancouver. He’s putting the puck on target with more frequency. “[The shots] were just there tonight,” Kessel said after the win over Philadelphia. “I got some good passes; some good opportunities to shoot the puck. So I’ve got to give credit to the guys I play with. They got the puck to me.” Said coach Mike Sullivan, “I spoke with Phil about getting himself in those areas of the ice where he has opportunities to shoot the puck. He did a much better job of that [against Philadelphia]. He was inside the dots a lot. “That line [Kessel, Malkin and Hagelin] is starting to learn [Hagelin’s] tendencies, with his speed and how he can open up the ice for those guys. That had something to do with it as well. “But I thought Phil did a great job of making himself available and presenting himself to the puck so he had opportunities to shoot in the good ice.” Kessel’s PPG was one of two the Penguins scored against the Flyers. After beating Vancouver, the Penguins were 5-for-20 on the power play over their last five games. “In this league, if you get your power play going — if you get a goal on your power play every night — you’ve got a good chance of winning,” Kessel said. The Penguins’ win on Jan. 21 was Kessel’s first taste of the Penguins-Flyers rivalry. “Obviously, this is a big game for us,” Kessel said. “They’re a division rival. As much as you can win these games, you need to. [The playoff race] is very close. These division games are very important.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

JASON BOTTERILL ASSOCIATE GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his second season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WB/S Penguins have made the playoffs all six years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 39, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury. MIKE SULLIVAN HEAD COACH

Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Assistant coach Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization. In his current role, he oversees the club’s defensemen and its penalty killing unit. Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams was a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses. A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND BROADCASTING

Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder. Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond. Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

AT TEAM’S ANNUAL CHILDREN’S PRACTICE & PARTY Penguins’ players held their 29th annual Children’s Practice and Party at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry on January 20. Fifteen children and their families from the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater PA and Southern WV, The Children’s Institute and the Children’s Home of Pittsburgh were special guests at the team’s practice session. After practice, the families were treated to pizza for lunch and were then joined by the entire team for a meet and greet that included taking photographs, securing autographs and spending some quality time with their favorite players. The event has been a team tradition for decades and it goes without saying — a great time was had by all!

Penguins forward Tom Kuhnhackl made his NHL debut on Jan. 9 in Montreal. The 2010 fourth-round draft pick recently sat down to discuss his time in Pittsburgh and how his father, legendary German hockey player Erich Kuhnhackl, influenced him. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO GROW UP AROUND A PROFESSIONAL PLAYER AS GOOD AS YOUR DAD? To be honest, when I was a kid I didn’t know my dad was a hockey player. When you’re young you open drawers and look around, and I found old tapes and DVDs of my dad. I wanted to watch and see what’s on them and it was him scoring like six goals a game and people talking about how great he was. That’s when I decided I was going to play hockey when I’m older. At the time I think I was seven- or eight-years-old. WHO WOULD YOU SAY YOU’VE MODELED YOUR GAME AFTER? That’s a tough one because back in the days when I played in the junior league, I was a pure offensive player. I never really came back to my own zone. I would just float around at the far blue line and just wait for the pass and the scoring chances. As soon as I got into pro hockey, my coaches said ‘this is not how to play here.’ He didn’t play me. He scratched me until I learned how important defensive play is, so I think I’m almost like a [Patric] Hornqvist. I have to be strong on the pucks, stay at the net-front, track pucks, get in on the forecheck and finish. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? Watch a movie on the couch or play Xbox. I like to shut down and get away from hockey and focus on other things. I’m from Germany — I’m a huge soccer fan so I obviously have to play FIFA. I’m from just outside of Munich, so Bayern is my favorite team.

THE UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX

IS NOW OPEN

On August 14th, the Pittsburgh Penguins and UPMC opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art practice and medical facility. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry serves as the official practice home of the Penguins, and is the first medical facility in the country to conduct elite sports medicine research focusing on hockey-related training, rehab and injury prevention. The 185,000-square foot facility includes 54,000 square feet of clinical space, offering expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy and on-site MRI and x-ray imaging. The complex features two sheets of ice and the Penguins have a locker room and weight room similar to those at CONSOL Energy Center as well as other NHL-style facilities for coaches and players. The two sheets of ice are home to the Penguins Elite youth hockey program in addition to amateur and high school games, adult hockey leagues and instructional camps and clinics. The facility also offers public skating and figure skating and will host community events. continued on page 91

Gary Roberts, the former NHL star who played parts of two seasons with the Penguins, oversees the philosophy and off-ice training regimen at the facilityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sports Performance Center. He also consults with full-time UPMC staff to create fitness programs that can benefit players at all levels of hockey. Another former NHL player, Matt Herr, serves as executive director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. An outstanding two-sport athlete at the University of Michigan, Herr was drafted by professional teams in both hockey (Washington Capitals) and baseball (Atlanta Braves). He played 58 NHL games with Washington, Florida and Boston and worked in both prep school hockey and as a regional manager for USA Hockey when his playing days were over. Herr oversees business and hockey operations at the complex and will work with UPMC Sports Medicine and the Sports Performance Center to design an integrated development model for hockey. The sports medicine clinic includes 24 private patient rooms and a physical therapy gym overlooking the Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; practice rink. There also is a dedicated sports performance space including a sprinting track and batting cages.

HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the Sports Director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. The Pittsburgh Penguins made a midseason swap that sent David Perron and Adam Clendening to Anaheim in exchange for the speedy Carl Hagelin on Jan. 16. In 43 games with the Ducks, Hagelin notched 12 points (4G-8A) in 43 appearances. But head coach Mike Sullivan knows the winger’s game is about more than that. “I think he’s going to track pucks down and help keep them longer,” Sullivan said. “He’ll put teams in vulnerable circumstances, and he’s got a good enough hockey sense to where he can play with other guys at that level. He’s a really great player and a great person, so I think he’ll fit in real well.” Sullivan and Hagelin have crossed paths before. The two worked together in New York while the Penguins coach was an assistant with the Rangers. Three years later, the two are reunited in Pittsburgh. “I was a young guy when I came up,” Hagelin said. “He was a really good coach. He was there for me when I needed it, and he obviously gave me good advice.” With Nick Bonino out for an extended period Sullivan needed to find another strong penalty killer, and Hagelin has helped fill that gap. continued on page 131

“He’s a very good penalty killer,” Sullivan continued. “We can use him in a lot of circumstances. That’s one of the things we liked about him was his versatility. He can play a lot of different roles. He can play in the top six. He can kill penalties. He can bring an element of speed to your team where I think he has an immediate effect on your team’s overall speed with or without the puck.” With zero practices under his belt, Hagelin debuted alongside Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel against the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 17. Early in the first period, Hagelin sealed off a Carolina defender at the crease — allowing Olli Maatta to find open space and net the first of five goals for Pittsburgh. Sullivan thought the new guy’s first show on Pittsburgh ice was solid, and will continue to get better as he earns more reps with the team. “I think his speed is evident,” Sullivan said. “And the more he gets to play with Malkin and the other guys, the more familiar he’ll get with them. It’ll allow him to get better. But I think his speed is evident and gives him the ability to create plays.” Hagelin was more modest after the win over the Hurricanes and kept his thoughts focused on the team. “I’m just trying to play my game,” Hagelin said. “I try to use my speed, create turnovers, and drive through the middle to create ice for my teammates, and I think I did that. continued on page 132

“My legs are feeling good, and I had a couple chances. But I’m not going to sit here and talk about myself, because we won 5-0 and the team game is what matters.” Just days later, Sullivan’s words were echoed in boisterous cheers after Hagelin dished out the game-winning assist in the Penguins’ 4-3 win over the Flyers at CONSOL Energy Center on January 21. Hagelin used his speed to get up ice and start a 2-on-1 fast break that Kessel capped of with a one-timer. “Guys are learning how to play with ‘Hagey,’” Sullivan said after the game.“They’re learning how he uses his speed to create ice for them.” The guys are certainly happy Hagelin is on their side now after battling with him a lot over the years. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Rangers before getting traded to the Ducks this past summer. The Penguins are the team Hagelin has played the most games against in his career, as he’s dressed for 20 regular and 12 postseason games against Pittsburgh — with all of those playoff contests coming the last two seasons. In 2014, the Rangers eliminated the Penguins in five games in the Second Round. And last year, the series-clinching overtime winner came off the stick of Hagelin in Game Five of their First Round matchup — a goal Marc-Andre Fleury remembers very well. “It’ll be nice to see him practice a little bit, and stop him,” Fleury said with a laugh. “No, it’ll be good though. He’s a good player. He’s a fast player. He’s got some skills. We’ve seen him play a lot over the years.”

Marc-Andre Fleury is the Penguins number one goaltender. He has been since the first overall pick in 2003 laid claim to Pittsburgh’s blue paint shortly after walking the stage in Nashville. But for Fleury, now 31 years old and in his 12th year in the league, for the first time in his career the student may become the teacher. Well, maybe a student teacher. Enter 21-year-old Matt Murray and 20-year-old Tristan Jarry. Murray and Jarry, splitting the goaltending duties for head coach Clark Donatelli’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this season, have been nothing short of spectacular in their opportunities to backstop one of the AHL’s top teams. As of Jan. 25, Murray’s .933 save percentage paced all AHL goalies. Jarry is mired in what is likely the best stretch of his young professional career — in his last five starts Pittsburgh’s secondround selection (44th overall) in the 2013 NHL Draft recorded three shutouts en route to wins in all five games. For Murray, Pittsburgh’s third-round selection (83rd overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft, after making his NHL debut on Dec. 19 vs. Carolina and starting four games in the place of the injured Fleury over a two-week span at the end of December, his star continues to only shine brighter with each new opportunity. Murray gave up two goals or less in all four of his NHL starts before returning to Wilkes-Barre, guiding Pittsburgh (2-1-1) to pick up crucial points in three of those four games. continued on page 144

He said that experience was extremely valuable in building confidence that he can play at the highest level and helping him adjust to the speed of the game, one he admitted was a bigger jump than he expected. “You want to be at your best when the time is right and the team needs a big save to stay in the game,” Murray told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review following his 34-save performance in a shootout loss to Toronto on Dec. 30. That was the final NHL game Murray played before Fleury was activated off injured reserve and plugged back into his number one spot. Now, the seasoning for these two goalie prospects will continue at the AHL level, where they have a chance to play an appropriate number of games for them to continue improve. “I think they both realize that your pro career can be short if you don’t get off to a good start,” Penguins goaltending coach Mike Bales said. “Both of them have done the right stuff since day one.” The dynamic duo’s “right stuff” has played a large part in the the WB/S Penguins tallying 47 shutouts over the last five AHL seasons. That figure is 16 shutouts ahead of the next closest team, the Hershey Bears. And for Fleury, Bales will tell you its business as usual. “[Murray and Jarry] have obviously been around training camp, and they have seen Marc-Andre and how elite he is, how fast he is and how well he moves,” Bales said. “I think that is a good barometer for them to see how good NHL goaltenders are and if that want to have the type of career he has had, they need to keep improving on and off the ice.” In any case, Pittsburgh has positioned themselves for success in net for many years to come.

The Penguins headed toward the All-Star Break determined to zero in on the details of their game rather than the scoreboard or the standings. Victories remain a cause for celebration, especially a 4-3, come-from-behind decision over Philadelphia on Jan. 21 at CONSOL Energy Center, a triumph that was characterized by winger Patric Hornqvist as “obviously the biggest win so far this year.” But the Penguins, especially head coach Mike Sullivan, maintain they can’t afford to become distracted by what the nightly results mean in the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference Wild-Card races. “I don’t know if we’re in the mode of scoreboard watching,” Sullivan said. What would be the point? The victory over the Flyers left the Penguins five points out of third place in the division and as one of seven teams within five points of one another in the chase for one of the conference’s two Wild-Card invitations to the playoffs. In the wake of a subsequent 5-4, come-from-behind win over Vancouver on Jan. 23 at CONSOL Energy Center, the Penguins were three points out of third in the division and one of seven Wild-Card hopefuls in a seven-point conglomeration. continued on page 155

With things as jumbled as they’ve been and as competitive as they figure to remain, the idea has been to focus on stacking wins, period. “Certainly, I think our players understand the circumstance we’re in,” Sullivan said. “I think they understand the importance of each and every game we play, and that if we can take control of our circumstance now it makes it that much easier come the middle of March. Certainly our coaching staff and our players, we’ve discussed that a lot. “We’ve given them kind of the big-picture scenario, but the focus with this group has always been the one game at a time. We can’t get ahead of ourselves. I think we’re well aware of our circumstance. We understand the importance of collecting points as we go here to keep ourselves in the hunt and climb in the standings. “But the way to do it is to focus on the process every day. Just come to the rink, try to get better. When we have opportunities to play in games we have to compete hard.” Scoring goals is a big part of that equation, but the Penguins’ emphasis toward that end has been to hone in on the details of their game and their process much more than it has been to put pucks in the net. “It goes back to that conversation we had with the team when we were in Detroit [for what became a 5-2 win on Dec. 31],” Sullivan said. “We’ve talked to them about not trying to outscore teams but trying to outplay teams. And so it entails a little different thought process. We certainly want to be aggressive.

We can be aggressive and be responsible at the same time. “I don’t think it’s so much our aggression as it is making sure that we make the right decisions and we manage the puck the right way in the critical areas of the rink. If we do that I think we’re more difficult to play against. “Since I’ve taken this team over I’ve been a strong believer that our own puck management is one of the critical areas that’s going to dictate our success. We have some skill guys that want to play with it, and there’s always risk associated with playing with the puck. We have to make the right decisions. “We certainly don’t want to take the stick out of our players’ hands. That’s why they’re as good as they are; we want to give them the latitude to make those plays. We just want to make sure we give them certain parameters so that we’re not playing a highrisk game that we give our opponents an opportunity to counterattack, in which case we’re not controlling what we can to win.” THE THEORY BOILS DOWN TO: Play the right way and the goals will come. Play the right way long enough and the wins will come. And once the wins start coming with regularity, the standings issues will be resolved. “For us it’s a matter of finding our consistency,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “When we have that the wins will kind of take care of themselves, the results will take care of themselves. Just putting three periods together and trying to do that consistently, I think we give ourselves a pretty good chance.” And if that happens, it’ll be the teams the Penguins are competing with that will be forced to watch the scoreboard eventually.

HOCKEY SCHOLAR NEIL ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL Bethel Park School District has committed to creating opportunities for students to develop 21st century technology skills. As part of this commitment, the Penguins’ Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program was introduced to Mr. Rosi’s fifth grade class at Neil Armstrong Middle School. “All of our students have some sort of familiar tie to the Penguins,so bringing this program into the classroom brought instant interest to the topics,” said Mr. Rosi. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of the game while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), has become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.

Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. For Pittsburgh Penguins games, all alcohol sales within the arena will conclude at the beginning of the third period. Individual concerts and events are determined on a show-by-show basis.

ATM MACHINES For the convenience of our fans, ATMs are available in CONSOL Energy Center: First Niagara Bank - Outside section 119 and 230, and in the lobby of the Trib Total Media Gate PNC Bank on PNC Legends Level - Outside of party suite 44 and suite 13

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

AUTOMOTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AAA will have a “Puck Truck” at all Penguins home games. The “Puck Truck” is available to assist patrons that have trouble with their vehicles in CONSOL Energy Center lots only. Fans can call 1.800.AAA.HELP after the start of the third period.

BABY CHANGING STATIONS Baby changing stations are available in all restrooms, located on all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

to inform guests of the situation and any instructions as applicable. All exits and emergency exits are posted with appropriate signage.

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: Peoples Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Items lost at events are held in storage for thirty (30) days and then either disposed of or donated to an appropriate charity.

A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. In September 2015, the last North Park McCandless dek rink was completed Paul J. Scuillo II Memorial Park Bloomfield bringing the total Renzie Park McKeesport completed rinks to 12. Richland Community Park Richland Twp. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.
