AROUND THE NHL
By: Mike Prisuta
LUONGO BY THE NUMBERS:
Florida G Roberto Luongo’s 424th win on Feb. 4 against Detroit moved him past Tony Esposito and into sole possession of seventh place on the NHL’s all-time wins list. The 6-3 victory also ran Luongo’s record to 13-2-2 over his last 17 games, with a 1.82 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage and three shutouts. Luongo emerged within one game of tying Glenn Hall (906) for sixth place on the NHL’s all-time games list.
MILLER TIME:
Rangers C J.T. Miller, a product of the Pittsburgh Hornets program growing up, had established career-high numbers in goals (16), points (29) and gamewinning goals (four) and had tied his career-high total in assists (13) through New York’s first 52 games. Miller’s production included a goal in six of his last nine games and 17 points in his last 22 contests heading into a meeting with New Jersey on Feb. 8. Miller was one of five Rangers to
10
appear in each of the team’s first 52 games (D Marc Staal, D Ryan McDonagh, RW Mats Zuccarello, D Keith Yandle).
GIVING THE DEVIL HIS DUE: A streak
of six goals and four assists for 10 points in 10 games elevated New Jersey RW Lee Stempniak to the top of the Devils’ scoring chart with 39 points through 53 games (15+24).
30 AGAIN FOR OVIE:
Capitals LW Alex Ovechkin’s goal in Washington’s 3-2 victory over Philadelphia on Feb. 7 made him the third player in NHL history to score 30 or more goals in each of his first 11 seasons in the league. Ovechkin joined Mike Gartner (first 15 seasons) and Wayne Gretzky (13 seasons) in that club. Ovechkin is the only player in the NHL to score 30 or more goals in every season since 2005-06.

THE SERIES [VS] RED WINGS
The Penguins and Detroit Red Wings meet tonight for the second time this season and the first and only time here in Pittsburgh. In Detroit on New Year’s Eve, the Penguins rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to deliver five unanswered goals, including three in the final 13 minutes, to earn a 5-2 victory. Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist each had three points as Pittsburgh scored a pair of power play goals in the second period to start the rally. . . The teams will play for the last time in the regular season on March 26 in Detroit. . . The Penguins are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games against Detroit and have scored four or more goals in seven of those 10 games. . . Pittsburgh is 4-2-0 in its last six home games against the Wings, the last meeting here being a 5-1 Detroit victory last March 15. . . The Penguins’ power play has been blanked in seven of the last eight home games against the Red Wings (2-for-26), while Detroit has gone 3-for-9 in its last four games here. . . The Wings have scored the first goal in five of their last seven games against Pittsburgh. . . Malkin has points in seven of his last eight games against the Wings (5+7) but has scored only one career regular season goal against them here, that coming on Dec. 13, 2011. . . regular season goal against the Wings here, that coming on Jan. 31, 2010. He has been held to just three points in his last six games against Detroit. . . The Penguins have lost the season series against Detroit just once since the start of the 2007-08 season, that coming in 2011-12, when they dropped the only meeting between the teams. . . Sergei Fedorov is the last Detroit player to record a hat trick against the Penguins, doing so on Oct. 25, 2002, while Jordan Staal’s hat trick on Nov. 11, 2008 was the last by a Pittsburgh player against the Wings.
THE PENGUINS
The Penguins, who have had two days off since playing in Florida on Monday night, will host Tampa Bay on Saturday and then play in Buffalo on Sunday. Those are both afternoon games. . . Crosby took an 11-game point streak (12+10) into the Feb. 10 home game against the Rangers. He also had scored in nine consecutive home games heading into that game with New York. consecutive home games is Mario Lemieux, who did so in 11 straight from Jan. 5 to Feb. 23, 1996. . . Crosby and Letang had three points each to engineer one of the most dramatic rallies in team history Feb. 6 in Florida. The Pittsburgh power play, once 29th in the NHL, was tied for eighth after the victory in Florida at 20.1 percent. . . The win over the Panthers was the fourth this season by Pittsburgh when it trailed entering the third period. Only four teams had more such victories at that point. . . Crosby was tied for ninth in NHL scoring heading into last week, while Letang was fifth in scoring among NHL defensemen despite playing only 41 games due to injury. . . Before facing Anaheim here, the Penguins had been playing without Malkin, Eric Fehr, Beau Bennett and Nick Bonino. . . Letang’s overtime goal against Florida gave him three in his career during the regular season, matching Sergei Gonchar’s record for Pittsburgh defensemen. . . The Penguins were working on a sixgame home winning streak before hosting the Rangers. They were 8-0-2 in their last nine at home since falling here to Carolina on Dec. 19 (1-2).

WHAT LESSER-KNOWN PENGUINS PLAYER (PAST OR PRESENT) HAS LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOU? WHAT DID HE DO TO MAKE THAT IMPRESSION? “Battleship Kelly. He was skating up ice behind an opposing player, trying to get him to go by tapping him on the shoulder with his stick. He tapped him probably three times. The other guy turned around, dropped the stick and raised his hands ready to throw the gloves off. When he realized it was the Battleship, he picked up his stick and kept skating. The players receive 10 hours of on-ice practice, and 10 hours of off-ice practice. In addition, goalie coaching is available for each practice for the youth hockey goaltenders. The Penguins Selects Program also has age groups for both boys and girls who range rom birth years 2003-07. Included in these programs are 10 hours of on-ice practice, and 10 hours of off-ice practice. In addition, for the boys 2003-07 clubs, two teams will be sent in each division (AAA and an Elite team) to compete in the North American Spring Showcase. The North American Spring Showcase is hosted from June 3-5 in Toronto, Ontario featuring highly competitive teams from both Canada and the USA. PENGUINS PROFILE
SIDNEY
CROSBY By: Mark Madden
28
It was mid-December, and Sidney Crosby wasn’t producing like Sidney Crosby. The Penguins captain had just six goals and 13 assists in his first 30 games, and had gone pointless in 17 of those. He was nowhere near the NHL scoring leaders. Crosby’s slump was mystifying. The effort was there. The production wasn’t. But on Dec. 18, normal service was resumed. The Penguins lost at home to Boston that night, 6-2. But Crosby had two assists. In the 19 games after, Crosby racked up 16 goals and 12 helpers. He posted a goal and two assists in the Penguins’ 3-2 overtime triumph at Florida on Feb. 6. Those three points put Crosby at 902 for his career. He is tenth-fastest in NHL history to reach 900 points, doing so in 677 games. Crosby’s excellence on the power play has contributed mightily. He was moved down low on the PP by coach Mike Sullivan, and got six goals and five assists with the man advantage in that aforementioned 19-game stretch. As of Feb. 6, Crosby was tied for ninth in the NHL scoring race with 22 goals and 27 points in 50 games. He isn’t likely to catch the leader, Chicago’s Patrick Kane (76 points). But everybody else might want to start looking over their shoulders. Crosby’s revival was most evident when the Penguins beat Ottawa, 6-5, Feb. 2 at CONSOL Energy Center. Ottawa led, 4-3, after Cody Ceci scored at 3:25 of the second period. But Crosby took over, compiling a natural hat trick by tallying on the power play at 6:10 and 16:45 of the second period, and with the teams at even strength at 6:40 of the third. Crosby’s last goal gave the Penguins a 6-4 lead, and they held on to eke out the victory. “It’s nice,” Crosby said after the hats had finished flying. “There are nights you feel like you have a ton of chances, and nothing goes in. So, to get them in bunches is nice, especially in a game like this that’s high-scoring, and you know the last goal is probably going to win.” That last part wasn’t literally true, but the victory over Ottawa was a crazy game, an 11-goal special. Count Crosby among those who enjoyed the lunacy. “It’s fun,” Crosby said, smiling. “You don’t play that many of them. You have to embrace it as just one of those games where everything is bouncing wacky out there. “For the most part, we did a lot of good things. We made a few mistakes and there were a few bad bounces, but I think that’s typical after a break.” continued on page 31

When you go through a coaching change, everybody has to prove themselves. Everybody kind of starts fresh. I feel like I was in the same boat, and I wanted to make sure I was personally better. Sidney Crosby
continued from page 29
The game was the Penguins’ first since the NHL All-Star weekend. They hadn’t played for a week. The power play has been a major catalyst in the Penguins’ positive spurt. Starting with their 5-2 home win over Columbus on Dec. 21, the Penguins went 19-for-66 with the man advantage over 19 games, a conversion rate of 28.7 percent. They got 11 wins and four OT loss points in those 19 games. The power play had underachieved dating back to midNovember of the prior season. Crosby thinks the PP renaissance is based on simplicity. “We’re not forcing things, and we’re working really hard,” Crosby said. “We’re outworking the [opposition] PK most times. When we do that, our skill kind of takes over and we’re just reacting out there. It’s instinct and reacting instead of forcing things that aren’t there.” Crosby has played mostly down low on the PP since Sullivan took over. But he’s not the primary catalyst when it comes to jamming the blue paint. “[Patric Hornqvist is] always there,” Crosby said. “But sometimes it takes a second guy to go there or, if [Hornqvist] isn’t there, to just kind of fill in. The mentality is, when we have an opening, we take it and shoot it.” Crosby’s statistical turnaround has taken place since Sullivan assumed the Penguins’ coaching reins on Dec. 12. Did that switch serve as a motivating factor? “When you go through a coaching change, everybody has to prove themselves,” Crosby said. “Everybody kind of starts fresh. I feel like I was in the same boat, and I wanted to make sure I was personally better. “As a group, we’ve been better, and when the team’s playing well, I think everybody benefits.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to nine straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

SENIOR IS GRANTED WISH
TO ATTEND PENGUINS GAME By CJ Harvey
It took 91 years, but Betty Cummings finally attended her first Penguins game. “People forget that us old people still like to enjoy life,” Cummings said while watching the Penguins’ thrilling 6-5 win against the Ottawa Senators on Feb. 2 at CONSOL Energy Center. Cummings was gifted tickets from the Twilight Wish Foundation. The non-profit organization’s mission is to honor and enrich the lives of deserving seniors through wish granting celebrations that connect generations. So it was only right that the Pittsburgh native’s wish was to attend her first Penguins game with her family. “I can’t believe how excited the people are,” Cummings said. “I definitely did not expect this many people on a weeknight. I’m just amazed at the whole thing; I’m stuck in awe.” Cummings watches Penguins games on a 19-inch TV at her home in East McKeesport. She has always been a Pittsburgh sports fan, but four years ago, at age 87, she began to follow her favorite player — No. 87. And finally, she had a chance to see Sidney Crosby in person. “I like him, but I think they’re all good,” Cummings said with a laugh. “I just kind of picked him. In a way he’s got a boyish face, but he’s always tough on the ice, and I like that.” Cummings has been a helping hand in the community for a long time. She was a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels organization for over 20 years, but stepped away after she turned 90. She’s also an officer in the Christian Women’s Guild and considers herself a “lady of charity.” Cummings still attends daily mass and sings in the choir at St. Robert’s Church in East McKeesport. The Pennsylvania-based charity group, Twilight Wish Foundation, acknowledges seniors for all they’ve given to others by bringing comfort and joy into their lives through individual wish granting celebrations for those over 68. Since their founding in 2003, Twilight Wish has granted over 2,100 individual wishes to deserving seniors, thanks to volunteers, corporate and community involvement, and donations. You can make other wishes like Cummings’ come true by donating online at twilightwish.org.

THE UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX
IS NOW OPEN
On August 14th, the Pittsburgh Penguins and UPMC opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art practice and medical facility. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry serves as the official practice home of the Penguins, and is the first medical facility in the country to conduct elite sports medicine research focusing on hockey-related training, rehab and injury prevention. The 185,000-square foot facility includes 54,000 square feet of clinical space, offering expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy and on-site MRI and x-ray imaging. The complex features two sheets of ice and the Penguins have a locker room and weight room similar to those at CONSOL Energy Center as well as other NHL-style facilities for coaches and players. The two sheets of ice are home to the Penguins Elite youth hockey program in addition to amateur and high school games, adult hockey leagues and instructional camps and clinics. The facility also offers public skating and figure skating and will host community events.

Gary Roberts, the former NHL star who played parts of two seasons with the Penguins, oversees the philosophy and off-ice training regimen at the facility’s Sports Performance Center. He also consults with full-time UPMC staff to create fitness programs that can benefit players at all levels of hockey. Another former NHL player, Matt Herr, serves as executive director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. An outstanding two-sport athlete at the University of Michigan, Herr was drafted by professional teams in both hockey (Washington Capitals) and baseball (Atlanta Braves). He played 58 NHL games with Washington, Florida and Boston and worked in both prep school hockey and as a regional manager for USA Hockey when his playing days were over. Herr oversees business and hockey operations at the complex and will work with UPMC Sports Medicine and the Sports Performance Center to design an integrated development model for hockey. The sports medicine clinic includes 24 private patient rooms and a physical therapy gym overlooking the Penguins’ practice rink. There also is a dedicated sports performance space including a sprinting track and batting cages.

PENGUINS DEVELOPING AMATEUR
HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy
The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95
93
continued from page 93
All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the team. Designed to sell remaining game day inventory, the Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2015-16 season, an estimated 200 Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. Eligible students have access to purchase these tickets through an exclusive, day of game, online pre-sale. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text also includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several games have been designated special Student Rush nights. For these games, at least 500 tickets will be available online! For more information on the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush program, the terms and conditions and a schedule of special Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush. Your carrier’s standard messaging and data rates apply to all SMS correspondence. Additional charges may also apply. This service is available on participating carriers. All tickets are subject to availability. To end this service, text STOP to 32623. For help, text HELP to 32623 or email cservice@pittsburghpenguins.com or call 1-800-642-7367.

HOCKEY
ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:7.5”
HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. For more information about Heads UP Pittsburgh and testing locations, visit our website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

GETTING TO KNOW:
CARL HAGELIN By: Michelle Crechiolo
Penguins fans are seeing what newest Penguin Carl Hagelin is capable of on the ice since being acquired from Anaheim on Jan. 16 in exchange for David Perron and Adam Clendening. The 27-year-old winger is incredibly fast, can kill penalties and recently had a five-game assist streak. However, they may not know a lot about the Sweden native off the ice — so he took the time to sit down with us and answer a few questions. What part of Sweden are you from? Thirty minutes south of Stockholm. What was it like growing up there? We lived out in the country, right by a lake. You spend a lot of time with your neighbors and your family, and it was a good time. How many siblings do you have? One older brother and one older sister. Helen and Bobbie. How’d you first get started playing hockey? My brother [Bobbie] played. That’s how I got started. My dad was coaching his team. So I was able to join one of their practices and I didn’t love it at first. I remember the first time I just started crying right away. I went to McDonald’s, had a Big Mac and we waited a year. Then I loved it. continued on page 131

You moved to the States to play college hockey at the University of Michigan. What was that experience like for you, especially coming from Europe? The first year was hard. It was a learning process. Hockey-wise it was fine; it was more of the culture and the language barrier. I tried to pick up as much as possible. I think halfway through my sophomore year, that’s when I started feeling comfortable. It got a lot easier, both in school and socially.
You were on your own right away, with no billet family or anyone like that to ease the transition. Who helped you the most? I was fortunate to have my family come over and visit me three or four times during that year, and then my dad had some relatives in the area there close to Ann Arbor. I was able to see them a couple of times. Then my sister went to school with this one guy — she got her master’s in Monaco and he worked in Ann Arbor, so he took care of me. Reflecting back on it, what did you like the most about your college experience? How everyone cared about athletics. How it was such a big group of athletes that cared for each other and cared about each other and really supported each other. What are your early impressions of Pittsburgh? It’s been good. Hockey-wise it’s a great organization, great players. You get treated extremely well. The city I haven’t seen too much, but it seems very nice. What do you do when you’re not at the rink? First of all, I spend a lot of time FaceTiming my friends back home. That’s a big part of it, catching up with friends and family back home. I love watching movies. I go to every new movie that comes out, basically. Those are probably the two main hobbies outside of hockey. Then it’s different in the summer when you’re able to go out on the lake and all that. But during the year, it’s a lot of movies and a lot of FaceTiming. continued on page 132

Is there one movie you can watch over and over? Superbad is probably a movie I could watch over and over. The first 30 minutes for sure. What do you do on the plane? Sometimes I’m a card guy. I’m new here, obviously, so I’ve been sitting next to ‘Dales’ (Trevor Daley). We’re actually just chatting it up. The food on the plane here is unreal, so me and Dales just order everything and try it out. It’s more of a food trip for us. What’s your ideal meal? I love any type of seafood, so I’d go for probably tuna tartare to start out and then a nice salmon. What music are you listening to right now? [Justin] Bieber right now. What’s your favorite song off his new album? Love Yourself. Who are your closest friends in the league? I was in New York for a while so [Mats] Zuccarello and [Henrik] Lundqivst; [Ryan] McDonagh and [Derick] Brassard. Then me and Erik Karlsson go back before [coming to the NHL], so I’m really good friends with him too. Then I knew [Patric Hornqvist] a good amount before, and now we’re getting closer and closer. Speaking of Patric, he said during games you re-tie your skates during every TV timeout and he joked that you’re not the best person to sit next to on the bench. What else is part of your routine? I think that’s about it. What’s your favorite sport besides hockey? Tennis. [Roger] Federer is always going to be No. 1. That would be my favorite individual sport, and then football when it’s playoffs. But soccer’s probably the second sport I follow the most.

With six minutes remaining on Saturday, Feb. 6 at BB&T Center, the Pittsburgh Penguins needed a spark. The tight nature of the Eastern Conference playoff picture leaves little margin for error. Lose one night, and you may very well be on the outside looking in. Lose two nights in a row, and you’ll need to start making a climb or risk a sometimes lethal losing streak. The exact kind of streak that could disable the Penguins’ pre-All-Star Game momentum, built by winning three-straight home games headed into the break. Fast forward to Pittsburgh’s second road game in as many nights in Florida, and you’ll find where the magic begins to happen. A 6-3 loss to Tampa Bay one night before came ripe with reasons to excuse the Penguins for a loss the following night against one of the league’s hottest teams, the Florida Panthers. No Evgeni Malkin. No Eric Fehr. And no time to shift into reverse in a Metropolitan Division that remains tight and projects to stay that way until the season’s final weeks — for Pittsburgh, 13 Metro matchups loom in March alone. The excuses were no longer acceptable for Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang, who took over the final six minutes of regulation and overtime to lift the Penguins to what will be considered a special win that helped keep the momentum trending upward. continued on page 144

It is points (14) and assists (11). not easy doing it all “It is hard to match the way [Letang] is playing right now,” night long, especially Crosby said. “It seems like on back-to-back nights, offensively, defensively, the way to carry the play like he is skating he is all over the that but he is doing an ice and he is doing it all night long. It is not easy doing it all incredible job for us. night long, especially on backSidney Crosby to-back nights, to carry the play like that but he is doing an incredible job for us.” For Crosby, it is starting to become more expected than anything else. A beautiful cross-ice feed to Letang helped open the scoring. Crosby’s assist was his 900th NHL point, making him the 11th-fastest player in NHL history to reach the 900 mark and in the process extended his NHL-best point streak to 10 games. And on a night where the story could have ended there, Crosby and Letang made it sure it didn’t. A Crosby goal with less than two minutes to go pushed the Penguins into overtime. Eight seconds into the extra session, a Florida penalty gave Pittsburgh a 4-on-3 power play. Not a minute-and-a-half later, it was over. Crosby found Letang again in almost an identical spot as his first goal to blast one past Florida netminder Roberto Luongo. “Those two guys [Crosby and Letang], I thought put the team on their backs,” head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters following the win, which boosted Pittsburgh temporarily into third-place in the Metropolitan Division. “They raised their level at a critical time in the game. We have talked a lot about resilience and not getting deflated at any stretch of the game. For me, I think that is an indication of the leadership we have. “And it starts with those two guys.”

POWER PLAY
CHARGED UP By: Mike Prisuta
The Penguins’ power-play units have advanced to the point where even when they come up drastically short it works out somehow in the end. Consider the Penguins’ visit to Florida on Feb. 6: The power play hemorrhaged a short-handed goal that put the Penguins in a 2-0 hole midway through the third period. But they rallied with a goal by defenseman Kris Letang, another by center Sidney Crosby with goaltender Jeff Zatkoff pulled in favor of an extra attacker (not a power-play goal by definition but one on which an extra skater was nonetheless put to good use) and finally a power-play goal by Letang in overtime. Letang’s game-winning goal against the Panthers marked the fifth time over a six-game stretch that the Penguins’ power play had managed to score (they went 7-for-24 overall in the six games for a success rate of 29.2 percent). That represented a quantum leap for a team that had opened the season by going 2-for-31 on the power play through the first nine games (6.5 percent). The Penguins also endured a season-long seven-game streak without a power-play goal from Dec. 5 through Dec. 18 (0-for-19). But in games No. 4 through No. 26 of the Mike Sullivan era the power play failed to change the scoreboard a mere five times in 20 games and went 20-for-68 overall (29.4 percent). And by the time the Penguins were making their game-day preparations for Anaheim on Feb. 8 their power play was ranked a more-than-respectable No. 8 in the NHL (tied) at 20.1 percent (35-for-174). continued on page 155
153
continued from page 153
“We’re just not forcing things and we’re working really hard,” Crosby explained of the Penguins’ ability to finally generate and maintain success on the power play. “We’re out-working the ‘PK’ most times and when we do that our skill kind of takes over and we’re just reacting out there.” Center Evgeni Malkin and Crosby had been leading that charge. Malkin had a team-leading 10 power-play goals prior to missing games on Feb. 5 at Tampa and on Feb. 6 at Florida. And Crosby’s two power-play goals on Feb. 2 against Ottawa were his eighth and ninth of the season (as well as the first two along the way to a hat trick for the Penguins’ captain). So the Penguins have had that going for them. They’ve also been going to the net. “It’s going to be different guys,” Crosby said. “[Winger Patric Hornqvist] is always there. Sometimes it takes a second guy to go there, or if he’s not there someone else has to kind of fill in. “I think just the mentality [has changed]. When we have an opening we take it and shoot it. When there’s a pass to be made we execute it. That’s a big difference.” For Sullivan, the power-play units’ responsibilities go beyond merely scoring goals at a given clip. continued on page 157

To Sullivan, it’s mostly about when the Penguins score powerplay goals, and about what happens when they fail to do so. “Percentage is one thing, and all of that, but for me it’s about when you score and the timing of how you score and whether you help your team win,” Sullivan maintained. Letang’s OT-winner at Florida was a pretty representative example of such. “That’s a timely goal,” Sullivan confirmed. “For me that was a huge goal.” Still, even the most efficient power-play units aren’t able to score goals a majority of the time. But how they go about their business in such instances can likewise prove critical. “Obviously, we want them to score every time they’re on the ice,” Sullivan continued. “But for me, one of the things that I’ve tried to talk to our power-play guys about is just playing the right way and trying to execute. Even if we don’t score our power play should give our bench momentum because they’re playing the right way and they’re creating opportunities to score. For me, that’s what we can control. “For the last little while here they’ve found the back of the net. My hope is that we continue on that path. I’m confident that those guys can continue to score, they’re good players. But even in the times when we don’t score if we play the right way and we execute it’s going to give our team momentum and that’s going to help us win, as well. “That’s what we’ve discussed a lot with our guys.”
Obviously, we want them to score every time they’re on the ice. But for me, one of the things that I’ve tried to talk to our power-play guys about is just playing the right way and trying to execute. Even if we don’t score our power play should give our bench momentum because they’re playing the right way and they’re creating opportunities to score. Mike Sullivan

FUTURE GOALS
HOCKEY SCHOLAR NEIL ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL Bethel Park School District has committed to creating opportunities for students to develop 21st century technology skills. As part of this commitment, the Penguins’ Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program was introduced to Mr. Rosi’s fifth grade class at Neil Armstrong Middle School. “All of our students have some sort of familiar tie to the Penguins,so bringing this program into the classroom brought instant interest to the topics,” said Mr. Rosi. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of the game while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. Sample course topics include: Geometry: measuring the angle of a bank pass and the Law of Reflection Phases of Matter: manipulating air and ice temperature for the perfect game time surface “It was fantastic to see one student in particular who has had trouble with math work through each lesson independently and improve her number-sense and arithmetic. I’ve even heard other students comment that it’s like they’re ‘on’ the Penguins team as they earn trophies for module completion alongside Crosby and Malkin!” If you’re a 4th-7th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

DRAFT CLASS DANIEL SPRONG
Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), has become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.
DOMINIK SIMON
Forward • 5th round, 137th overall Simon has played his entire career in the Czech Republic League. He played the 2014-15 season for HC Plzen, a team owned by former Penguins player Martin Straka, and finished tied for third on the team with 30 points (18G-12A) in 52 games. continued on page 191

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.
FREDERICK TIFFELS
Forward • 6th round, 167th overall In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college. Tiffels is a big soccer fan and follows his hometown club, FC Koln. His favorite player on the team is Lukas Podolski.
NIKITA PAVLYCHEV
Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.
