AROUND THE NHL

By: Mike Prisuta

OVIE, CAPS SET THE STANDARD:

The Capitals’ unprecedented run to a 43-10-4 record through 57 games was fueled first and foremost by LW Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin had a goal and an assist in Washington’s 4-3 victory over New Jersey on Feb. 20, which ran his streak to 17 goals in 17 games dating back to Jan. 7. Ovechkin’s 10 goals in the first nine games of February marked the 20th calendar month that he’d scored at least 10 goals during his 11-year career. The only other NHL players with double-digit totals in goals in at least five months over the last 11 seasons at that juncture were Steven Stamkos (10), Sidney Crosby (six), Jarome Iginla (six), Ilya Kovalchuk (six) and Evgeni Malkin (five). Ovechkin’s 14th two-point game this season left him with 38 goals, 15 assists and 53 points in his first 55 games, and with 157 more goals, 40 more points, 36 more multi-goal games and 18 more gamewinning goals than any other player since 2005-06. The Capitals’ 43 wins were the most through 57 games in NHL history and two shy of their 2014-15 total (45-26-11).

10

Washington also became the first team to 90 points through 57 games since the 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers (91).

GOOD COMPANY:

Sharks LW Patrick Marleau scored the 91st gamewinning goal of his career on Feb. 9 at Chicago, which tied Marleau with Wayne Gretzky and Mark Recchi for 18th on the NHL’s all-time list.

SHORTHANDED SUCCESS:

The Blues went 7-1-1 in their first nine games after the All-Star break thanks in part to their ability to kill 38 of their first 40 post-break penalties, a run that elevated St. Louis to No. 1 in the NHL in penalty killing (87.1 percent).

ROAD WARRIORS:

Columbus visited Boston on Feb. 22 having gone 4-1-1 in its last six road games. G Joonas Korpisalo had a 1.95 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage in that stretch.

One year we were at my house for a baptism party and the Penguins were in the playoffs against the Rangers. We were watching the game and the Penguins were winning. During an intermission, we ate dinner. When we went back to the game, the Penguins lost the lead. We realized we were in different seats. A mutual friend, who worked the mid-shift and knew us both, introduced us at a work get-together. Ryan’s first words to me were ‘We sit in the same section (E19). HOCKEY WEEKEND ACROSS AMERICA RECAP By Calvin Isaac

Hockey Weekend Across America was initiated by USA Hockey in 2008 to engage the hockey community in celebrating the sport of hockey at all levels and exposing the game to new audiences. The weekend consisted of multiple initiatives to shed new light on the sport such as Wear Your Favorite Jersey Day on Feb. 19, Try Hockey Day on Feb. 20 and Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes Day on Feb. 21. With dozens of states and hundreds of hockey rinks participating in Hockey Weekend Across America, the 2016 campaign was a great success! One of 300 rinks across America who hosted Try Hockey for Free Day was the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township. The day consisted of both boys and girls between the ages of four and nine being introduced to hockey for the very first time. With equipment provided by the facility and no admission fee, the participation rate was very high with 30 girls and 59 boys lacing up the skates and taking the ice to try the sport of hockey. Volunteers from the Penguins Elite Hockey program, as well as players from Slippery Rock University helped make the day possible by skating with the participants and providing helpful tips during the session. After the on-ice session, all of the kids received a certificate for participating in the Try Hockey for Free Day. In addition, the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex staff educated the parents about the Learn to Skate Program and Mite Development League located at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex which could serve as a ‘next step’ for kids to continue to play and learn the game from USA Hockey certified coaches.

PENGUINS PROFILE

MATT

CULLEN By: Mark Madden

28

When Matt Cullen signed with the Penguins as a free agent this past off-season, it looked like he would be way down the depth chart. Besides Cullen, the team’s center position boasted Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Nick Bonino and Eric Fehr. But injuries felled center after center. When Malkin went down hurt following the Penguins’ 6-5 home win over Ottawa on Feb. 2, he joined Bonino and Fehr on the sidelines. Suddenly, Cullen was the second-line center on the high-octane Penguins. Dreams do come true, even at 39. Cullen didn’t post Malkin-like numbers after assuming the Russian superstar’s job, but he definitely did well: Two goals and two assists in seven games, including a goal and assist in a 6-3 home triumph against Detroit on Feb. 18. Cullen mostly skated between right wing Phil Kessel and left wing Carl Hagelin, though Patric Hornqvist took the right wing spot during the victory over Detroit. Cullen feels his game changes only minimally according to what line he’s on. “It doesn’t change too much,” said the Minnesota native. “You’ve got to do what you do. If you’ve got a guy like [Kessel], you want to give him the puck more. The same goes with [Hagelin] and [Hornqvist]. With those two guys, it’s a little more of a pressure game. We try to get in on them, and turn pucks over. “But, truthfully, you do what you do as well as you can, and maybe try to get [the wingers] the puck a little more.” After 56 games, Cullen had seven goals and 11 assists. The Penguins are Cullen’s seventh NHL team. He spent the prior two seasons with Nashville. His last top-six stint? “It’s been a little while,” Cullen said, smiling. “Probably Minnesota. I did a couple different stretches on the top couple lines.” Cullen played with the Wild for three seasons, 2010-13. Cullen’s best season was 2005-06, when he had 25 goals and 24 assists in 78 games for Carolina. He had four goals and 14 assists in 25 playoff games as the Hurricanes won the only Stanley Cup in that franchise’s history. Penguins GM Jim Rutherford filled the same capacity for that Carolina team. He brought Cullen to Pittsburgh and so far, the 6-foot, 200-pounder has thrived. “It’s been a really good fit,” Cullen said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity. I had a lot of excitement coming into the season. continued on page 31

29

continued from page 29

Pittsburgh is a cool place to play: A lot of fun, a great organization and a lot of tradition. For me, that’s a big deal. Being in a hockey town, I really enjoy that. “So, it’s been a good fit, team-wise, and my body’s been feeling good. As you get older, that’s the big thing you worry about. How you feel, and how your legs feel. Up to this point, I’ve felt great.” Cullen’s goal against Detroit came close to the blue paint. He deflected Trevor Daley’s shot from the point, and then jammed his own rebound between the pads of Red Wings’ goalie Petr Mrazek. “It was good puck pursuit by [Hagelin and Hornqvist],” Cullen said. “They both did a good job in the corner, getting the puck back, and then brought it back out. We were able to get a rebound and find a hole. “[Hornqvist] is such a great player. I played with him quite a bit in Nashville my first year, and I really enjoyed it. He brings so much to the table. He gets so many pucks back, and takes up two defenders so often. It frees up a lot of space.” At 39, Cullen is a lot closer to the end than he is to the beginning, or even the middle. But he’s not ruling out playing in the NHL at 40 next season. “I just put that on the backburner ‘til after the season, and see how the body feels,” Cullen said. “But I’ve really enjoyed this season. I’m having a heck of a lot of fun. It’s a fun group to be around, and we’re playing some good hockey.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to nine straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. On February 17, the Penguins Alumni hosted their Fifth Annual Skate with the Greats at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. The event afforded alumni members the opportunity to catch up with old teammates and friends while also making some new ones. Fans delighted in skating alongside and chatting with former players from Penguins past. For some, it was a night to reminisce with players they had grown up watching. While younger fans were able to get some skating advice from the experts. All proceeds from Skate with the Greats benefitted the Nicole Meloche Memorial Breast Cancer Research Fund, a research project the Penguins Alumni Association created in partnership with Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation to specifically study metastatic breast cancer. The fund is in memory of Nicole Meloche, wife of Penguins alumnus and former goaltender, coach and scout Gilles Meloche. OPEN PRACTICE By CJ Harvey

Around 6,000 students from all over Allegheny County made the trip to CONSOL Energy Center for the annual Pittsburgh Penguins Kids’ Open Practice on Feb. 19. The event was presented by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and is designed to support the foundation’s mission by promoting physical well-being, encouraging teamwork, emphasizing education and providing essential life skills to young people in the community. Rambunctious students danced and sang as songs like Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off blasted over the speakers. Eventually, the lights went down and a highlight video lit up the scoreboard. It was at that moment that chants for the Penguins’ captain started, and rarely died out. “We understand the position we’re in and we try to be good role models,” Sidney Crosby said. “Hopefully that’s something kids can look up to. Nobody’s perfect, but I think you try to do your best and understand the situation you’re in.” Michelle Rosborough, a teacher at Pittsburgh Brookline, said the Penguins players are just that. “Looking at the Penguins and knowing they’ve committed themselves to this sport and working hard shows students that they can achieve anything,” Rosborough said. “I’ve always looked at the Penguins as role models for these kids, and I think that’s very important to all of them.” Two students at Shaler Area Upper Elementary, Teyah Wilson and Rhilee Weideman, were both elated to be at the rink. They earned the right to be there after reading one million words as part of a program at their school. “I just wanted to see a great practice, and learn how they prepare for their games,” Wilson said. “It took a long time to read to one million words, because we started at the beginning of the school year, but I’m just happy to be here.”

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the team. Designed to sell remaining game day inventory, the Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2015-16 season, an estimated 200 Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. Eligible students have access to purchase these tickets through an exclusive, day of game, online pre-sale. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text also includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several games have been designated special Student Rush nights. For these games, at least 500 tickets will be available online! For more information on the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush program, the terms and conditions and a schedule of special Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush. Your carrier’s standard messaging and data rates apply to all SMS correspondence. Additional charges may also apply. This service is available on participating carriers. All tickets are subject to availability. To end this service, text STOP to 32623. For help, text HELP to 32623 or email cservice@pittsburghpenguins.com or call 1-800-642-7367.

HOCKEY

ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.

DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!

T:8.5”

B:8.75”

S:7.5”

HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.

NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!

3.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!

4.

CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

5.

It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!

6.

Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. PENGUINS’ IDENTITY STARTS WITH SULLIVAN By: Sam Kasan

Mike Sullivan had a lot to think about during his five-hour drive to Pittsburgh. It was Saturday afternoon, Dec. 12, and his life was about to change dramatically. Sullivan, head coach of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, had been preparing a video meeting for his team’s game that evening against Albany when he received a call from general manager Jim Rutherford. Rutherford offered him the job of head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the National Hockey League. After just two months on the job he had steered WB/S to an 18-5 record and first place in the Atlantic Division. Now he was being asked to save the sinking Penguins. Pittsburgh underachieved through the opening months of the season. They had a 15-10-3 record. A team stacked with offensive talent — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel — ranked 27th in the league in offense, and the power play was tied for 26th. But most importantly to Rutherford, the team wasn’t passing the eye test. On that Saturday afternoon, as Sullivan continued his drive to his new team and new life, Rutherford stood before the media and answered questions about the coaching change. The GM felt that the Penguins had “more to give” and needed to “have more will to win.” Sullivan’s job was clear, make the underachieving Penguins fulfill their potential. In the end, he wanted his team to take on certain characteristics: speed; compete; resilience. continued on page 131

“I don’t believe that a team identity evolves. I think we steer it,” Sullivan said. “It’s my responsibility as the head coach to make sure that I do that. The Marshfield, MA native knew that change wouldn’t take place in one day. It would be an evolutionary process. He preached to his players to embrace the process, but he had a multi-plan attack on how to steer that process. The first step was altering the team’s mindset. “The question I asked myself when I first took the team over is how do I have an immediate impact,” Sullivan said. “Usually when a coaching change is made, it’s because expectations aren’t met and it’s a difficult circumstance. So that can be a hard environment for players to perform. “I tried to shift that focus away from dwelling on their circumstance and focus it on just trying to get better every day. Focus on the process and own your own game. Take ownership for your work habits.” Sullivan believed that changing the team’s mindset would be the foundation of creating the team’s new identity. And it was part of creating a team filled with competitive spirit. “I’ve always been a strong believer in the mindset in sports and that a lot of games are actually won or lost before you step onto the ice,” he said. “As coaches, we like to talk strategy, style of play and X’s and O’s. But the root of the game is still based on emotion, passion and energy. It’s that human element, that competitive spirit for me that’s the difference between winning and losing.” “The challenging part was that we didn’t have a lot of practice time,” Sullivan said. “It was very difficult as far as trying to make subtle adjustments with some tactical things we were doing.” Tactically, the Penguins wanted to be a speed team. And the crux to playing with speed starts in your own zone. “I think it’s vitally important to team success, the ability to come out of your end zone efficiently and effectively, preferably with the puck,” Sullivan said. “I think it helps us establish a speed game continued on page 132

through the neutral zone. Team speed is one of our competitive advantages. So we’re trying to play a style of play that leverages that speed.” Lastly, Sullivan wanted his team to show a steely resolve and unwavering attitude in the face of adversity. And that characteristic has to start at the top. “It was important for me to show a certain level of resolve and resilience because that’s the very thing I’m asking my players to do,” Sullivan said. “So that’s what I tried to do for them, be a confident, calming influence.” Much of Sullivan’s personal confidence comes from his own experience. He played over 700 games in the NHL as a player and has served as both a head coach (Boston, 2003-06) and eight seasons as an assistant coach in Boston, Tampa Bay, NY Rangers and Vancouver. All of those experiences had prepared him for his current challenge. “The one thing I brought to this job is a certain confidence level and comfort level that I was very prepared for the opportunity,” Sullivan said. “The reason is because of all the experiences that I’ve gone through coaching over the last 12 years. I’ve been associated with successes and failures, and you learn from both.” Under Sullivan, the Penguins’ have climbed back into the playoff hunt and are slowing building on the team identity that he wants to instill. While the improvements are welcome, the team still has a long way to go to accomplish it’s ultimate goal. But Sullivan has no doubt in what the outcome will be. “The challenge is to take a group of great players and become a great team,” Sullivan said. “I was excited about this opportunity, but I also brought an inner confidence that I believe that I’m capable of the challenge.”

WILSON LEADING PACK FOR

HUNGRY YOUNG PENGUINS By: Dave Uhrmacher

Scoring that first NHL goal is never easy. For Scott Wilson, the wait lasted 13 games. After making his NHL debut for Pittsburgh last December in a game against New Jersey, Wilson was poised to start seeing regular bottom-six minutes for the big club. Wilson, 23, had appeared to complete the journey so few can accomplish. Drafted in the seventh round (209th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft by Pittsburgh, Wilson knew his scoring touch and speed would be his biggest assets in attempting to beat the odds, shed the late-round pick tag, and become a regular on the lineup card. But only a handful of shifts into that first NHL game against New Jersey last December, Wilson sustained a lower-body injury. Not knowing how the rest of his season would play out following the injury, Wilson continued to rehab and then refine his game at the AHL level. The call came again. Pittsburgh needed a healthy forward who could suit up for its playoff series against the Rangers. Wilson played three playoff games for the Penguins last season. Fast forward to training camp this season and Wilson’s situation remained much the same as it had the year before — prove yourself at the American Hockey League level and that call will come. An AHL-leading 22 goals as of Feb. 1 showed he was ready. When that call came for the second time this season, Wilson was ready to prove not only to himself, but to his peers and any onlookers that he was ready. continued on page 144

Fifteen games into his 2015-16 campaign, Wilson has shown the chance he had to play in Pittsburgh last year was no fluke. He was ready to come again and do what he does best — score goals. Wilson beat Detroit goaltender Petr Mrazek in the second period on Feb. 18 to score his first NHL goal. “It was pretty special,” Wilson said. “It means a lot to get one and I feel happy that I can help pitch in.” He hasn’t looked back since that first one. Wilson scored goals in three-straight games, tallying once versus Detroit (Feb. 18), Tampa Bay (Feb. 20) and again on the road in Buffalo (Feb. 21). “The confidence thing has been big for me,” Wilson said when asked to explain the goal-scoring run. “I think I just have to stick to the same way I’ve been scoring and focusing on the 5-on-5 play and getting good chances.” The UMass-Lowell product has been counted on along with teammate Bryan Rust to lead the group of Penguins forwards that started the year or spent some amount of time refining their game in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season and last. That group includes the likes of Wilson, Rust, Conor Sheary, Tom Kuhnhackl and Oskar Sundqvist. Sheary and Kuhnhackl also scored their first NHL goals this season. “It is a lot of fun,” Wilson said when asked about scoring goals, specifically with guys who have made a similar journey he has through the organization. “And it’s much better when we win.”

DEFENDING AGAINST

PUCK LUCK By: Mike Prisuta

In an effort to get more pucks into the net, Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan has emphasized ever since taking over the importance of first getting as many bodies and pucks as possible to the net. But as Sullivan is well aware, that isn’t necessarily a revolutionary concept. Two can play at that game, or, as is the case in the NHL these days, 30 teams can and 30 teams do on a regular basis. “Every coaching staff in the league is preaching to their players those kinds of strategies where you have to get your defensemen involved, you go low to high [from near the goal line back to the blueline], you get pucks at the net, you get people at the net, you try to get some traffic and make the goalie’s sightlines difficult and opportunity presents itself,” Sullivan observed. “That’s part of the evolution of generating offense in the NHL.” It’s evolving that way because of how hard it has become to score goals. Power plays are one thing and odd-man breaks are another. And it’s still possible to score the type of tic-tac-toe goals that make the nightly highlight packages. But more and more, or so it seems, teams must also rely on the laws of probability and on good, old-fashioned puck luck. “There’s lots of traffic in front,” Sullivan continued. “There are layers of shot-blockers. Sometimes, when those pucks get through they have eyes and they find the back of the net. continued on page 155

153

continued from page 153

“The more pucks you get to the net with people there in those situations, the percentages are you might get some puck luck and the odd one may go in.” The Penguins have scored their share of goals in such a fashion, but they’ve also been on the other side of tip-ins, screens and inadvertent deflections that ended up in their net. A three-game stretch against Detroit on Feb. 18, Tampa Bay on Feb. 20 and Buffalo on Feb. 21 was particularly challenging in that regard. The game against the Lightning, a 4-2 setback at CONSOL Energy Center, was especially frustrating because it was the only one of the three that the Penguins lost. The first three Tampa Bay goals in that one were scored on plays that originated with “essentially three wrist shots from the blueline,” Sullivan said. “Those are nothing plays if the goalie sees it.” When the goalie doesn’t see the puck, such seemingly nonthreatening situations can degenerate into critical goals against. One of the Penguins’ objectives the rest of the way will be to minimize damage sustained in such a fashion as often as possible. “It’s an important aspect of the game, being solid in front of your net and getting to the blue paint at the opposite end of the rink,” Sullivan said. “It’s an important area of the rink. continued on page 157

“Certainly, that’s an area of our game where we know we can improve. It’s something we’ve been working on since I’ve been here as far as trying to do as good a job as we can to improve our goalies’ sightlines and make sure that we do our best to try to deny that ice when the opportunity presents itself. “It’s a hard area of the rink to defend and certainly that’s an area that we’ve stressed with our whole team, our forwards as well as our defensemen, as far as being better in that area, more aware of trying to clean up that area of the rink.” There are some absolutes associated with such a clean-up project. They’ve been identified; the trick for the Penguins the rest of the way will involve perfecting them and consistently applying them. “We have to do a better job with our box-outs and sealing the front of the net and trying to move people out of the area, tying up sticks,” Sullivan said. “We can continue to improve at giving our goaltenders an opportunity to see the puck. “We have to get in shot lanes. We have to do our best to try to block some shots and not allow the puck to get there. The best way to defend that area of the rink is to deny the puck to get there. A lot of times it’s not the initial shot that’s the hardest one to defend; it’s the rebound or the next play that’s very difficult to defend.”

FUTURE GOALS

HOCKEY SCHOLAR NEIL ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL Bethel Park School District has committed to creating opportunities for students to develop 21st century technology skills. As part of this commitment, the Penguins’ Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program was introduced to Mr. Rosi’s fifth grade class at Neil Armstrong Middle School. “All of our students have some sort of familiar tie to the Penguins,so bringing this program into the classroom brought instant interest to the topics,” said Mr. Rosi. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of the game while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. Sample course topics include: Geometry: measuring the angle of a bank pass and the Law of Reflection Phases of Matter: manipulating air and ice temperature for the perfect game time surface “It was fantastic to see one student in particular who has had trouble with math work through each lesson independently and improve her number-sense and arithmetic. I’ve even heard other students comment that it’s like they’re ‘on’ the Penguins team as they earn trophies for module completion alongside Crosby and Malkin!” If you’re a 4th-7th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

MEET THE PENGUINS 2015

DRAFT CLASS DANIEL SPRONG

Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), has become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

DOMINIK SIMON

Forward • 5th round, 137th overall Simon has played his entire career in the Czech Republic League. He played the 2014-15 season for HC Plzen, a team owned by former Penguins player Martin Straka, and finished tied for third on the team with 30 points (18G-12A) in 52 games. continued on page 191

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.

FREDERICK TIFFELS Forward

6th round, 167th overall

In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college. Tiffels is a big soccer fan and follows his hometown club, FC Koln. His favorite player on the team is Lukas Podolski.

NIKITA PAVLYCHEV Forward

7th round, 197th overalll

Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.
