STAAL IN THE FAMILY:

The Rangers’ acquisition of Eric Staal from Carolina united him with his brother, D Marc Staal, in New York. Other pairs of brothers who have played together with the Rangers include Bill and Bun Cook, Neil and Mac Colville, Lynn and Muzz Patrick, James and Steve Patrick, and Dave and Don Maloney. Eric Staal is one of only two NHL players to have registered at least 30 assists and 50 points in 10 consecutive seasons from 2005-06 through 2014-15 (Martin St. Louis is the other). Staal had 10 goals, 23 assists and 33 points when he was acquired on Feb. 28.

MILESTONE ACHIEVED:

Capitals D Brooks Orpik’s appearance on Feb. 24 against Montreal was the 800th of Orpik’s NHL career.

THE JACKET FITS:

Columbus LW Brandon Saad scored his career-high and team-leading 24th goal in a 4-3 shootout win over Florida on Feb. 27. Saad’s six gamewinning goals through 63

games were one shy of the Blue Jackets’ franchise record in that department.

STREAK SNAPPED:

Flyers RW Jakub Voracek had his consecutivegames streak of 286 games snapped when he missed a 4-2 win over Arizona on Feb. 27 due to a lower-body injury. Voracek’s run tied for the third-longest in Flyers history (along with Jeff Carter, 12.19.06–3.21.2010) behind Rod Brind’Amour (484, 2.24.93–4.18.99) and John LeClair (317, 4.22.95–3.9.99).

LAST MAN STANDING:

RW Loui Eriksson was the only Bruins player to play in each of Boston’s first 62 games. Boston was the only team that had just one player appear in every game at that juncture.

BISHOP BOLTS’ BEST:

Tampa Bay G Ben Bishop’s 4-0 shutout of New Jersey on Feb. 26 was his third of the season and the 15th of his career. That moved Bishop past Nikolai Khabibulin and into sole possession of first place on the franchise’s all-time shutouts list.

THE SERIES [VS] FLAMES

The Penguins host the Calgary Flames this afternoon and will be trying to start another winning streak against them. Pittsburgh had won nine consecutive games against the Flames, its longest win streak ever against them, before losing in Calgary on Nov. 7, 5-2. Johnny Gaudreau scored twice and set up a goal, and Mikael Backlund had three assists for the Flames in that game. Phil Kessel and Nick Bonino scored for the Penguins. . . The only time Pittsburgh played a multiple-game season series against Calgary and failed to earn a single point in the standings was back in 1982-83, when the Penguins went 0-3-0 . . . The Penguins have scored first in seven of their last nine games against Calgary, including four straight here in Pittsburgh. . . The Penguins have won four straight home games against the Flames and are 14-1-0 with two ties in their last 17 home games against Calgary. The only loss in that span came on Dec. 3, 2005, when Daymond Langkow had two goals, including the game-winner at 3:48 of the third period, in a 3-2 victory. Mario Lemieux assisted on a Sidney Crosby goal in that game, the penultimate point of Lemieuxâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career. . . During this 17-game home stretch in which continued on page 14

the Penguins have lost only once to the Flames, they have been outshot 12 times by Calgary. . . The Flames have a total of eight goals in their last six games here, and their power play is 1-for28 in that span. . . This is the 32nd meeting of the teams here in Pittsburgh, and there has never been a game decided in OT or a shootout. . . Crosby has seven goals in his last six games against Calgary, and he has never been held off the scoresheet here against the Flames, going 5+3 in four career games. . . Evgeni Malkin has never scored a goal on home ice against Calgary, going 0+3 in three career games. . . Marc-Andre Fleury is 3-1-0 on home ice against the Flames, his only loss coming here on Dec. 3, 2005 (3-2).

The Penguins play in New Jersey tomorrow afternoon to start a four-game road trip that also has them facing the New York Islanders, Columbus Blue Jackets and the New York Rangers . . . The Penguins play 16 games in the month of March, 12 of them against Metropolitan Division rivals. In fact, after this game, Pittsburgh’s next nine games are all against division foes . . . The Penguins acquired defenseman Justin Schultz from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a third-round 2016 draft pick on Feb. 27, and Schultz was expected to join Pittsburgh this past Thursday here against the Rangers. . . Scott Wilson began this week on an offensive roll, with goals in four of his last five games after scoring in the Penguins’ 4-1 home win over Winnipeg on Feb. 27. . . That left Pittsburgh in the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. . . Malkin returned to the lineup against the Jets after missing 10 games with a lower-body injury. . . Carl Hagelin had his first multiple-goal game with the Penguins against the Jets, scoring twice to help Pittsburgh extend its franchiserecord 15-game home win streak against the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise. . . Nick Bonino also returned to the lineup against the Jets after missing 17 games with a hand injury. . . Defenseman Kris Letang had points in four of his last five games (1+5) before facing the Coyotes here on Feb. 29. . . The Penguins were 24-0-0 when leading after two periods before playing the Coyotes, the only team in the league with a perfect record in that situation. The Penguins’ best record in that situation is 31-0-0, achieved in 1988-89 and 1997-98. . . Ben Lovejoy is on long-term injured reserve after suffering an upper body injury in the Feb. 20 loss to Tampa Bay. . . Pittsburgh was 8-2-0 in its last 10 home games before facing Arizona here on Monday night.

The annual Penguins Adult Hockey Classic presented by Labatt Blue took place just a few weeks ago with multiple teams from across the region. The round-robin games began at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex with three different divisions (Lower C, Upper C, and a B division). Each team who participated in the Adult Hockey Classic played a minimum of three games, received complimentary Labatt Blue cups, and the chance to hoist the Labatt Blue Barrel. On top of that, each player received a ticket to a Pittsburgh Penguins game and the opportunity to play their championship game for their respective division at CONSOL Energy Center. The Lower C Division Championship game at CONSOL Energy Center was a nail-biter. In a tight matchup between the two teams, Ha Ha Business managed to hold onto their 4-3 lead in a comeback attempt by Pro Tech in the dying seconds of the game. In the second championship game at CONSOL Energy Center, the Upper C Division teams held a defensive battle. Tomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bar proved to be a defensive powerhouse and topped Who Own Da Chiefs 2-0. The fast-paced B Division Championship game was between the Creepy Neighbors and Team KP. The Creepy Neighbors got off to a commanding 3-0 lead and was too strong for KP to battle back in a 4-1 win at CONSOL Energy Center. While no future or past NHL stars competed, the tournament was filled with as much passion and love for the game as any Stanley Cup final. Each championship winning team will now be engraved onto the Labatt Blue Barrel for ultimate bragging rights.

Defensemen Derrick Pouliot (eighth pick) and Olli Maatta (22nd pick) were both selected by the Penguins in the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Maatta won a spot on the team in 2013 and has been in Pittsburgh ever since. But for Pouliot, the route to steady work in the NHL took a bit longer to travel. The Saskatchewan native played 34 games with the Penguins last season, posting two goals and seven assists. Pouliot was pegged to make the team at training camp this season, but did poorly and was sent to the Penguins’ farm team in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Pouliot, 22, finally got called up in late January, making his NHL season debut in the Penguins’ 5-4 home win over Vancouver on Jan. 23. Pouliot hasn’t been flashy, but he’s been consistent. He had six assists and a mark of plus-one in his first 14 games of the current NHL campaign. Pouliot was disappointed by the demotion at season’s start: “Yeah, I definitely had higher expectations for myself. But I tried to handle it as best I could, and work hard down in [Wilkes/Barre]. I put my time in, and built my confidence. I did pretty consistent down there, and now things are going pretty well up here. “I feel I’ve been fairly consistent. My defensive game has been pretty good. There have been a few off-games, but I’ve responded well the next game.” Pouliot’s offensive pedigree started to show in late February when he posted four assists in five games, including two helpers in a 4-1 home win over Winnipeg on Feb. 27. “That’s definitely part of my game,” said the 5-foot-11, 195-pounder. “But when I came up, first I wanted to make sure I was playing consistently defensively. Then, I can work [offense] into my game and I think it’s starting to come a little bit.” Pouliot was an offensive wizard in Major Junior “A” hockey. In 2013-14, his last season with Portland, Ore., of the Western Hockey League, Pouliot had 17 goals and 53 assists in 58 games, tacking on five goals and 27 assists in 21 playoff games. It didn’t take long for Pouliot to prove he could produce at the NHL level. He scored on his first shot, beating Florida netminder Roberto Luongo on Dec. 20, 2014 at CONSOL Energy Center. It was the first period of Pouliot’s first-ever NHL game.

Pouliot feels he’s benefited from two solid defensive partners in Pittsburgh this season: First, Pouliot paired with Ben Lovejoy. Then, when injury knocked Lovejoy out of the lineup, Pouliot played in tandem with Ian Cole. “Both guys have actually worked very well,” Pouliot said after the victory over Winnipeg. “Ian and I are starting to build a little chemistry in the three games we’ve been together. Rev [Lovejoy] was very good, and I played with him last year, too. So it’s gone well with both those guys.” Pouliot also has the advantage of being familiar with coach Mike Sullivan, who guided Pouliot in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton prior to taking the Penguins’ reins this past Dec. 12. “Sully’s a great coach,” Pouliot said. “I really like playing for him. My minutes are starting to come up. The more the coaching staff gets to see me play, the more confidence they have in me.” Sullivan says that Pouliot got sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to help him, not punish him: “We think very highly of him. That’s one of the reasons he spent the time that he spent in Wilkes-Barre. That experience was all about Derrick, and an opportunity for him to develop his game. He spent a fair amount of time there this year. “We have him here with us right now, and we know he’s going to continue to improve.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

JASON BOTTERILL ASSOCIATE GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his second season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WB/S Penguins have made the playoffs all six years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 39, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury. MIKE SULLIVAN HEAD COACH

Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Assistant coach Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization. In his current role, he oversees the club’s defensemen and its penalty killing unit. Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams was a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses. A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder. Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond. Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

On February 17, the Penguins Alumni hosted their Fifth Annual Skate with the Greats at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Once again, Penguins alumni members and fans of all ages laced up for a fun night of skating while raising funds for charity. Over 300 fans gathered for the skating and autograph sessions. Participating alumni members included Francois Leroux, Mike Rupp, Randy Hillier, Colby Armstrong, Gilles Meloche, J.S. The event afforded alumni members the opportunity to catch up with old teammates and friends while also making some new ones. Fans delighted in skating alongside and chatting with former players from Penguins past. For some, it was a night to reminisce with players they had grown up watching. While younger fans were able to get some skating advice from the experts. All proceeds from Skate with the Greats benefitted the Nicole Meloche Memorial Breast Cancer Research Fund, a research project the Penguins Alumni Association created in partnership with Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation to specifically study metastatic breast cancer. The fund is in memory of Nicole Meloche, wife of Penguins alumnus and former goaltender, coach and scout Gilles Meloche. It was all smiles at Paradise Island Bowl & Beach on Feb. 25 as the Penguins kicked off their seventh annual Pens & Pins Charity Bowling Tournament. There was action happening in 23 lanes, and each one featured either a player or a coach, a child from the Make-A-Wish Foundation and three to five fans who generously donated to take part in the event. One fan in particular went out of his way to make the night extra significant for Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta. A teenager named Ben Popko had been waiting for the chance to give Maatta the puck from his first Olympic goal ever since his dad gave it to him in 2014. “As soon as my dad got it for me he knew that Maatta was my favorite player, and I immediately knew that it belonged to him and not me,” Popko said. Maatta was touched by the young fan’s kind action. “I’m kind of at a loss for words,” Maatta said. “It’s awesome. It’s a really nice gesture and it means a lot.” The Penguins’ Wives Association established this event in 2009. Since then, through the tournament, online auction, and bake sale the program has raised more than $300,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The wives and girlfriends of the players and staff are happy to get involved and give back to the community on the organization’s behalf. “For some of the kids, it’s life-changing,” Veronique Fleury said. “For some of the Make-A-Wish kids, it’s actually their wish to meet some of the players so they’re just having the time of their life and the guys are enjoying seeing them too. It’s an amazing feeling.”

THE UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX

IS NOW OPEN

On August 14th, the Pittsburgh Penguins and UPMC opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art practice and medical facility. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry serves as the official practice home of the Penguins, and is the first medical facility in the country to conduct elite sports medicine research focusing on hockey-related training, rehab and injury prevention. The 185,000-square foot facility includes 54,000 square feet of clinical space, offering expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy and on-site MRI and x-ray imaging. The complex features two sheets of ice and the Penguins have a locker room and weight room similar to those at CONSOL Energy Center as well as other NHL-style facilities for coaches and players. The two sheets of ice are home to the Penguins Elite youth hockey program in addition to amateur and high school games, adult hockey leagues and instructional camps and clinics. The facility also offers public skating and figure skating and will host community events.

Gary Roberts, the former NHL star who played parts of two seasons with the Penguins, oversees the philosophy and off-ice training regimen at the facilityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sports Performance Center. He also consults with full-time UPMC staff to create fitness programs that can benefit players at all levels of hockey. Another former NHL player, Matt Herr, serves as executive director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. An outstanding two-sport athlete at the University of Michigan, Herr was drafted by professional teams in both hockey (Washington Capitals) and baseball (Atlanta Braves). He played 58 NHL games with Washington, Florida and Boston and worked in both prep school hockey and as a regional manager for USA Hockey when his playing days were over. Herr oversees business and hockey operations at the complex and will work with UPMC Sports Medicine and the Sports Performance Center to design an integrated development model for hockey. The sports medicine clinic includes 24 private patient rooms and a physical therapy gym overlooking the Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; practice rink. There also is a dedicated sports performance space including a sprinting track and batting cages.

HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the Sports Director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. CROSBY SURPRISES LITTLE PENGUINS By: Michelle Crechiolo

When Amanda Kohn picked up her six-year-old son Hayden’s equipment at DICK’S Sporting Goods back in December after registering for Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play Program, initially, she didn’t notice the lucky Golden Ticket in his bag — given to 100 randomly selected participants. “Honestly, I didn’t even see it in the box of his equipment at first,” Kohn said. “He’s like ‘here Mom, here’s this Golden Ticket.’ I’m like, ‘what’s that about?’” On Feb. 26, Amanda and her husband Jeffrey quickly learned what the Golden Ticket entailed. They watched as Hayden was surprised by Crosby and his Penguins teammates Marc-Andre Fleury, Patric Hornqvist, Carl Hagelin, Jeff Zatkoff, Derrick Pouliot, Conor Sheary, Bryan Rust and Scott Wilson for a practice session split between the two sheets of ice at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “Honestly, I teared up a few times,” Amanda said of watching Hayden — who she says ‘lives and breathes hockey’ — interact with the players. “I’m so proud of him because this is what he wants to do and I know how important this day is to him that as a mom, it’s just kind of emotional. This is actually way beyond what I thought this was going to be.” Amanda turned to Jeffrey. “How long were we here before Hayden said, ‘This is the best day of my life?’” she asked. “We’re very grateful and thankful for continued on page 131

[Crosby], to come down onto their level and to be able to give them this experience — especially for somebody of his caliber in this sport — to get kids involved and get them to love the sport also.” “He really looks up to those guys,” Jeffrey added. “You should see him watching games. You just can’t believe it when you’re that close. You put yourself in the perspective of a kid, it’s like ‘wow, these are my heroes and I’m on the ice with them, and they’re teaching me something about hockey.’” It’s an experience that Crosby and the guys couldn’t be happier to give the kids. “It’s fun. They have so much energy,” Crosby said. “On a day like this where you’re done with practice, you’re a little tired when you get out there but you seem to get a bit of a jolt of energy when you’re out there with them.” A combined effort between Crosby, CCM, DICK’S Sporting Goods and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation provided free head-to-toe equipment — including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads and elbow pants — to 1,000 children between the ages of 4-7 this year. Now in its eighth season, the program has introduced over 7,200 players to the sport since its inception in 2008-09. For Crosby, it’s been crazy to reflect on just how far the program has come since the beginning. “I think the cool thing has been to see the numbers grow and to see the interest grow,” Crosby said. “The registration was I think 500 at the start. I think it’s almost 1,000 now or close to continued on page 132

there. Just to see the kids who have gotten into it and that they’ve enjoyed the experience and year after year, that’s the best thing you can hear, is just that they enjoy themselves. And if they stick with it, great. If they don’t, they’re able to say they tried it and were introduced to it. Regardless, they hopefully just enjoy their time while they’re in it.” That’s absolutely been the case for seven-year-old Trent Gordon, a first-time enrollee in the program. Because the kids aren’t just given brand-new equipment through the program — they’re given an opportunity to learn the sport. The players receive weekly lessons (10 total) at 24 participating rinks, including four special programs for girls only. Volunteers at each venue provide on-ice teaching. And Trent has been having a blast at the instructional sessions. “He loves it,” said his dad Brian. “He looks forward to it every Sunday morning. He’s up early ready to go.” This past summer, the Penguins captain held the inaugural Sidney Crosby Hockey School in his hometown of Nova Scotia at the rink he grew up playing in. Back then, Crosby looked up to local products Cam Russell and Don McLean, recalling how excited he was whenever he got the chance to see those guys up close. Now, Crosby is paying it forward. “You want to be able to help out or give back in any way you can,” Crosby said. “I had guys locally growing up that I looked up to, and I think just to be here in the city and for kids to have a close look at the team, be able to meet guys, to be involved in hockey — a sport that’s so special to us as players and the team — I think you’re just happy to share that.”

Four days ago, the Penguins began their march to the playoffs. Today’s matchup between the Flames and Penguins represents a rarity in the remainder of the regular-season schedule for Pittsburgh. The matchup is not rare — Pittsburgh and Calgary play an annual home-and-home series as Pittsburgh does with every Western Conference team. But the timing of the matchup is a different story. Pittsburgh, locked in a battle for playoff positioning with a host of Eastern Conference teams, will play 16 games in the month of March, marking just the ninth time in franchise history the club will play 16 or more games within a calendar month. Adding to the excitement of playing a game at an every-other-day pace will be Pittsburgh’s opponents during this 2015-16 stretch run — the Penguins play 12 of 16 games in March versus Metropolitan Division foes, and 14 of 16 versus teams in the Eastern Conference battling for those same playoff positions. If past history is a predictor for how the Penguins will fare in March, Pittsburgh should be happy stuffing 16 games into the 31-day month. Since 2007, Pittsburgh has compiled an 89-32-14 (.711 pct.) record in March. Head coach Mike Sullivan said that despite past results, they need to treat every game on the schedule with a high sense of urgency. continued on page 144

As of Feb. 29, Pittsburgh had only played 14 of its scheduled 30 games versus its Metropolitan Division rivals to the tune of a 7-5-2 record. Sullivan also pointed out that dealing with fatigue during the month will be a major point of emphasis that the coaching staff will continue to monitor very closely. “That is going to be one of our challenges,” Sullivan said. “We know we have a lot of games coming up, and we are going to do everything we can as a coaching staff to make sure we have all the energy we need for the games.” Despite the .500 record thus far versus those teams, positive signs have gleaned from the previous Metro contests and a couple new faces will have an important impact on these games in March for Pittsburgh. The first is defenseman Justin Schultz, who was acquired from Edmonton by general manager Jim Rutherford on Feb. 27 for a 2016 third-round pick. The other is elite goaltending prospect Matt Murray, who is expected to spell Marc-Andre Fleury in back-to-back situations as he continues to acclimate himself to the NHL at just 21-years old. For Sullivan, no matter the personnel he is using, he has one thing on his mind. “For me, it’s all about the games at this time of year.” It’s time for the Penguins to march.

The trophy was surrounded for the obligatory team photo and then abandoned in accordance with hockey tradition. They know all about that by now at Robert Morris. The hardware bestowed upon the Colonials for capturing their second consecutive Atlantic Hockey Conference regular-season championship was coveted but it wasn’t touched. An athletic department official had to ultimately remove it from center ice at the 84 Lumber Arena after the players had departed following a 6-2 victory over Canisius that concluded RMU’s regular season on Feb. 27. “Superstition, I guess,” head coach Derek Schooley said of his team giving its latest trophy the cold shoulder. It’s what hockey teams do when they have their sights set on more significant trophies down the road, and the Colonials this season are such a team. A group that includes nine seniors who took the ice for a regular-season home game for the final time against Canisius has an agenda that extends beyond the Atlantic Hockey Conference. The Colonials’ goal all along has been to win the AHC’s postseason tournament and the accompanying automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Once they get that far, the Colonials’ goal will be to “make some noise,” according to senior defenseman Chase Golightly. RMU’s nine seniors in particular know it can be done. They won 20 games as freshmen in 2012-13 including the Three Rivers Classic at CONSOL Energy Center. continued on page 155

They won the Atlantic Hockey Tournament in 2013-14 and secured the program’s first NCAA bid. They won a programrecord 24 games on the way to RMU’s first conference title last season. And they won another Three Rivers Classic this season, and with it another Confluence Cup, on the way to successfully defending their AHC regular-season crown. Now, the fun starts. With the conference title came a bye in the first round of the AHC postseason. RMU will host a second-round, best-of-three series on March 11, 12 and 13 (if necessary) against an opponent that is to be determined in the first round March 4-6. Surviving that, the Colonials would head to Rochester, N.Y., for the AHC Final Four, March 18-19. This is what they’ve been waiting for, it seems, ever since losing to Minnesota in the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in March of 2014. RMU was denied a shot at a second NCAA bid last season via an overtime loss to Mercyhurst in the AHC semifinals. This season, “It seems like at times we’ve been bored during the regular season,” Schooley observed. The Colonials overcame it well enough to go 21-9-4 overall and 18-6-4 in conference. Their non-conference record included wins over then-No. 10 Michigan (4-0 on Oct. 31 in Ann Arbor, Mich.), then-No. 14 Penn State (6-4 on Dec. 28 at CONSOL Energy Center) and thenNo. 8 Massachusetts-Lowell (5-3 on Dec. 29 at CONSOL Energy Center), a resume that suggests the noise Golightly and the Colonials intend to make in their anticipated NCAA return might be plausible if not audible. Senior winger Zac Lynch, of Shaler, had three assists in the regular-season finale against Canisius and tied Cody Wydo for No. 1 on the program’s all-time scoring list with 150 points. Senior center Greg Gibson scored three goals against Canisius, his 26th, 27th and 28th of the season, and moved within three of Wydo’s single-season goals record (31 in 2013-14). And senior goaltender Terry Shafer’s 40th win moved him to within two of Christian Boucher’s all-time program mark (42 from 2004-08). The Class of 2016 has already won a Robert Morris-record 84 games. It’s the chance to win one or more in the NCAA Tournament that has turned seemingly celebratory occasions such as the winning of a conference regular-season championship into merely a means to an end. “This group has won a lot of hockey games,” Schooley said. “I don’t know if ‘bored’ is the right word. They’ve been waiting for this. They’ve been waiting for playoffs, waiting to get the opportunity to go back to the NCAA Tournament, waiting for this chance. “It’s upon us.”

HOCKEY SCHOLAR NEIL ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL Bethel Park School District has committed to creating opportunities for students to develop 21st century technology skills. As part of this commitment, the Penguins’ Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program was introduced to Mr. Rosi’s fifth grade class at Neil Armstrong Middle School. “All of our students have some sort of familiar tie to the Penguins,so bringing this program into the classroom brought instant interest to the topics,” said Mr. Rosi. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of the game while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), has become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.

Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. For Pittsburgh Penguins games, all alcohol sales within the arena will conclude at the beginning of the third period. Individual concerts and events are determined on a show-by-show basis.

ATM MACHINES For the convenience of our fans, ATMs are available in CONSOL Energy Center: First Niagara Bank - Outside section 119 and 230, and in the lobby of the Trib Total Media Gate PNC Bank on PNC Legends Level - Outside of party suite 44 and suite 13

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

AUTOMOTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AAA will have a “Puck Truck” at all Penguins home games. The “Puck Truck” is available to assist patrons that have trouble with their vehicles in CONSOL Energy Center lots only. Fans can call 1.800.AAA.HELP after the start of the third period.

BABY CHANGING STATIONS Baby changing stations are available in all restrooms, located on all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

to inform guests of the situation and any instructions as applicable. All exits and emergency exits are posted with appropriate signage.

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: Peoples Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Items lost at events are held in storage for thirty (30) days and then either disposed of or donated to an appropriate charity.

A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. In September 2015, the last North Park McCandless dek rink was completed Paul J. Scuillo II Memorial Park Bloomfield bringing the total Renzie Park McKeesport completed rinks to 12. Richland Community Park Richland Twp. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.
