AROUND THE NHL

By: Mike Prisuta

CLIMBING IN STYLE:

Panthers RW Jaromir Jagr isn’t just hanging on as he continues to make NHL history. The assist Jagr registered on March 7 against Boston was his 1,851th point, which passes Gordie Howe for No. 3 on the NHL’s all-time list. It was also Jagr’s ninth point over his last ten games (4+5). Jagr, 44, led the Panthers with 49 points through 66 games (21+28; he’d played in 63 of Florida’s first 66 games) and was tied for the team lead in goals (21) with RW Reilly Smith.

THREE OF A KIND:

In 2015-16, the Bruins have had three successful penalty shots in a season for the first time in franchise history. LW Brad Marchand scored on Dec. 4 against Calgary and again on Feb. 6 against Buffalo, and RW David Pastrnak did so on Feb. 24 against the Penguins. The Bruins hadn’t taken three penalty shots in a season since 2009-10 (four).

KEEP ’EM COMING QUICK:

Kings G Jonathan Quick’s 33 saves in a 2-1 overtime victory

10

on Feb. 20 at Nashville ran his record to 15-0-4 in his last 19 decisions when stopping 30 or more shots. Quick had a career record of 12-0-3 when stopping 40 or more shots through Los Angeles’ first 64 games.

ROOKIE HELP:

Vancouver D Ben Hutton had 20 assists through Vancouver’s first 64 games and had become the first Canucks rookie blueliner to register 20 or more helpers since Mattias Ohlund in 1997-98 (23).

GIROUX REDUX:

Flyers C Claude Giroux’s power-play goal in a 6-0 victory on March 5 against Columbus was the 500th point of his NHL career. Giroux became the 13th player in franchise history to record 500 points with Philadelphia. His 55 points through the Flyers’ first 64 games (18+37) had Giroux positioned as the NHL’s leading scorer over the last five seasons (112+243).

NOTES By: Bob Grove

THE SERIES [VS] ISLANDERS

On March 15 the Penguins host the New York Islanders, the second game between the teams in eight days. Pittsburgh played its first game at Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, the new home of the Islanders, last Tuesday. . . Pittsburgh snapped a four-game losing streak to the Islanders here on Jan. 2 with a 5-2 win in the first game between the teams this season. Sidney Crosby had two goals and Kris Letang three assists as the Penguins scored the first five goals of the game and chased goaltender, and former teammate, Thomas Greiss from the net. Phil Kessel, Matt Cullen and Patric Hornqvist also scored for Pittsburgh, while John Tavares and Nick Leddy scored for New York. . . The Penguins are 5-2-1 in their last eight home games against the Islanders. . . Pittsburgh is 6-for-14 (42.8%) on the power play in their last five home games against New York, while the Penguins have killed 23 of 24 Islanders’ power plays over the last eight games played here. . . Crosby entered last week’s game against the Islanders with 62 career assists and 91 career points against New York, easily his highest totals against one team. He had 29 career goals against New York, fewer than only his total against Philadelphia (32). . . The teams will meet once more this season, April 2 in Brooklyn. . . Tavares has nine goals and 25 points in 32 career games against Pittsburgh. continued on page 14

THE SERIES [VS] HURRICANES

On March 17 the Penguins host the Carolina Hurricanes in the last game between the teams this season. The teams have split the first four games, as Carolina won here on Dec. 19, 2-1, thanks to first-period power play goals from Jordan Staal and John-Michael Liles, and at home on Jan. 12, 3-2, on Jeff Skinner’s overtime goal at 3:02 on the power play. The Penguins responded with a 5-0 home win on Jan. 17 behind 22 saves from Marc-Andre Fleury and two goals from Sidney Crosby, and a 2-1 road shootout win Feb. 12 with Kris Letang getting the shootout winner and Fleury stopping 29 shots. . . The Penguins have not lost the season series to Carolina since going 1-1-2 against them in 2009-10. . . The Hurricanes have won three of their last five games here in Pittsburgh, limiting the Penguins to a total of four goals in those victories . . . Carolina has scored the first goal in 14 of its last 21 regular season games here in Pittsburgh. . . Evgeni Malkin has scored just one goal in his last eight games against Carolina. . . Among the eight active goaltenders who have played at least 15 games against Pittsburgh, the Hurricanes’ Cam Ward leads them all in goals-against average (2.22) and save percentage (.927). He’s 16-7-4 against Pittsburgh in the regular season. . . The five games between these teams is the most in one season since they met six times in 1997-98, when Pittsburgh won all six games. continued on page 16

After hosting Carolina on Thursday, the Penguins will play in Philadelphia on Saturday and then host the Washington Capitals on Sunday. After the game against the Capitals, the Penguins will have a three-day break, their last break of more than one day between games this season. . . Josh Archibald made his NHL debut in Pittsburgh’s 4-2 home loss to Calgary on March 5. . . The Penguins began a four-game road trip March 6 in New Jersey with a 6-1 victory, thanks in part to Evgeni Malkin’s two goals and a career-high three points from Bryan Rust. It matched the largest margin of victory ever in New Jersey and was the most goals Pittsburgh had scored there since a 7-5 win on Oct. 7, 1999. . . The trip also took them to play the New York Islanders, Columbus Blue Jackets and the New York Rangers. . . Tom Sestito dressed for the Penguins in that win at New Jersey, the 16th American to play for the Penguins this season, a team record.

Q & A SPOTLIGHT WHAT LESSER-KNOWN PENGUINS PLAYER (PAST OR PRESENT) HAS LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOU? WHAT DID HE DO TO MAKE THAT IMPRESSION? “We’ve always enjoyed Kevin Stevens. I saw him at Gimbels one year on my anniversary. My wife loved Kevin, so I wanted to get his autograph for her. All I had was her anniversary card, so he signed it. I was a star and my wife was over the moon being ‘married’ to Kevin Stevens. We also really liked Robert Bortuzzo. He delivered our season tickets one year and made quite the impression on us. We had fun singing the Canadian National Anthem with him!” — John Paul Spina,

“Johan Hedberg (aka Abby Hale and her dad “Moose”). He was here at a Penguins game. when I was in high school. I played goalie for my soccer team. I think it was the fact that we were playing the same position. I remember paying attention to the way he played and trying to bring some of his elements to my own game.” — Abby Hale, Section 201, Season Ticket Holder Since 2015 “Rico Fata was my favorite player in high school. I loved his speed and scoring ability during a time when there were few players on the team who could score goals.” — Joseph Carpini, Section 234, Season Ticket Holder Since 2005 continued on page 20

“Jay Caufield. He was a huge presence on the ice, and now I see him every week at mass with his family.” — Keith Boyce, Section 231, Season Ticket Holder Since 2007

“I loved Syl Apps and Lowell MacDonald (still have a poster of Syl Apps); also enjoyed Bryan Watson. I was very young when they played and the game was so much rougher that everything they did left a grand impression.” — Joan Waldschmidt, Section 231, Season Ticket Holder Since 1994

“Georges Laraque. Met him in the Chicago airport on his way to training camp one year. Even with his rough and tumble style on the ice, he was very personable and sat and talked with me and another fan while we waited for our flight. He even got in line with us despite having a preferred seat.” — Nick Stratigos, Section 217, Season Ticket Holder Since 1985

“Jean Pronovost. I still chant the tune around the house ‘Let’s Go Pronovost!’” — Mike Carretta, Section 117, Season Ticket Holder Since 2015 “Dave Burrows because of his durability and steadiness.” — Ted Kovall, Section 217, Season Ticket Holder Since 2006 “Duane Rupp. Bought my first Penguins jacket at the store he had in Mt. Lebanon.” — Kevin Keller, Section 232, Season Ticket Holder since 2007 “I don’t know if he would be considered ‘lesser known,’ but it would be Kenny Wregget. I have always had a soft spot for goalies and I loved his ‘Penguin Mask’ from Batman. Ever since, my favorite number has been 31.” — Jody Fleming, Section 224, Season Ticket Holder Since 2005

“Bryan Trottier was a great player and great pickup for us. Seeing him run and slide on the tarp with the Stanley Cup at Three Rivers Stadium like a big kid is something I will never forget!” — James Ulrich, Section 207, Season Ticket Holder Since 1998

CROSBY AND THE PENGUINS HOST

GOLDEN TICKET EVENT By Candace Kourounis

The Little Penguins Learn to Play program, in partnership with Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted its second annual Golden Ticket Event on Feb. 26. Ninety-four members of the program were selected to attend the event after receiving a Golden Ticket in their equipment boxes upon pickup at DICK’s Sporting Good in January. The successful event was held at the Penguins new state of the art practice facility in Cranberry Township. Participants were invited to watch the Penguins practice that morning, which was followed by an on-ice clinic. Members of the program had the opportunity to work with some of the facility’s elite instructors through fun and interactive stations. Midway through the session, the Little Penguins were accompanied by Sidney Crosby and members of the Pittsburgh Penguins, which proved to be an exciting moment for all participants. “The once in a lifetime chance that my son Jameson was a part of was something that we will never forget,” said Julie Micelli, mother of Jameson. “I was so impressed with how well everyone that was a part of the event interacted with the kids. It was truly an awesome experience!” The Little Penguins Learn to Play Program has played a crucial role in the growth of youth hockey in western Pennsylvania. A combined effort between Sidney Crosby, CCM, and DICK’S Sporting Goods has provided free head-to-toe equipment to over 1,000 children between the ages of 4-8 this year. Now in its eighth season, the program has introduced over 7,000 players to the sport since its inception in 2008-09 and has allowed children to develop a love for the game. The Little Penguins Learn to Play program is looking forward to another year of fun and exciting hockey. If you are interested in joining the program, visit pittsburghpenguins.com for more information! Registration for the 2016-17 season will take place in the fall of 2016.

PENGUINS PROFILE

OLLI

MAATTA By: Mark Madden

28

Olli Maatta had cancer surgery, two shoulder surgeries and the mumps between May 2014 and January 2015. That puts a drag on your career. Fast-forward to March 2016. After 56 games, Maatta had six goals and 12 assists to go along with an amazing plus-23 mark. He had forged the Penguins’ top defensive partnership with Kris Letang. He had just signed a new six-year contract. He got named to Finland’s team for September’s World Cup of Hockey. Not bad for anyone, but even better for a 21-year-old who has conquered so much adversity. “Yeah, definitely if I think a couple years back, I wouldn’t think I’d be here right now,” Maatta said. “It’s kind of amazing. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. I’d probably have to sit down for a bit to let it sink in, but I haven’t had time for that.” Maatta has been a big factor in Letang’s rise to further prominence. After a rough start to the season, Letang was paired with Maatta. After 52 games, Letang had 11 goals and a team-high 37 assists. Letang speaks effusively of partnering with Maatta, and Maatta certainly has similar feelings. “The hockey [Letang is] playing is unbelievable right now,” Maatta said. “He’s playing so good. Sometimes it feels like he can do it all himself. I’m just trying to give him help — if he needs me. But most of the time he doesn’t. “It takes a little time, but I think we’ve got a little bit of chemistry. You just want to be available for him all the time, because he knows when to give you the puck, and when he gives you the puck, he makes sure you have more time with it. That’s how good he is. He makes his teammates look better.” The Penguins’ defense has evolved into a group that has a lot of speed and skill. Maatta is no slouch in either department. But with this unit, Maatta’s defensive acumen is near the top of the heap. “I rate my game on how I play defensively,” said the 6-foot-2, 206-pounder. “When you don’t see me out there, I’m doing a pretty good job. That’s how it goes. “[But] I want to produce out there. I don’t just want to be part of the team. I want to play a big role. That’s my goal. That’s what I work toward every day. That’s my mindset going out there. I want to help the team the best way I can.” Maatta’s very best will be required as the NHL campaign heads down the home stretch. The Penguins find themselves in a race continued on page 31

29

continued from page 29

that sees them jockeying for playoff position in the Metropolitan Division and, barring that, trying to lock down a wild card. “We’ve done a pretty good job the last couple games,” Maatta said after the Penguins thumped visiting Arizona 6-0 on Feb. 29, the Penguins’ third win in four games. “We’re all healthy and we’re all back together.” Maatta’s new contract has him set to be a Penguin through 2022. Maatta is happy, but… “I didn’t think about it too much,” Maatta said. “It’s more my agent and the team talking about it. But it’s nice to have it done so I can focus on hockey 100 percent now. “I wanted to be part of the Penguins. I like this organization a lot. I like the team here. I know we have a great team every year with [Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Letang, and Marc-Andre Fleury]. I’m just happy to be part of it. My goal was to be here for a long time.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to nine straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

PENS & PINS

ANOTHER HUGE SUCCESS

The Penguins Wives Association hosted their Seventh Annual Pens & Pins Bowling Tournament on February 25 at the Paradise Island Bowl & Beach for the benefit of the Make-AWish Foundation of Greater PA and Southern WV. The event raised over $64,000 and featured Penguins players and coaches serving as celebrity captains for each bowling team. LETANG CHAIRS

SKATING FOR LITTLE HEARTS By CJ Harvey

In 2007, Cindy and Joel Gradowski were blessed with a baby boy, Ethan. A short two years after his birth, Ethan’s strength and the family’s resiliency were tested when he was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, and because of serious complications, went into cardiac arrest and suffered several strokes. Now, Ethan is doing well and is joyous to participate in an event that his family, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Heart Institute Auxiliary of Children’s Hospital started in his honor. On Feb. 28, the second annual Skating For Little Hearts fundraiser was held at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, with all benefits going towards Children’s Hospital. Penguins defenseman Kris Letang agreed to be the Honorary Event Chair with hopes to spread awareness after he suffered a similar congenital heart complication in 2014. Children and their parents glided around with Letang and his son Alex for about an hour during the skate-a-thon. “It was special to skate with the kids,” Letang said. “To give back like this is an easy task.” He also noted the courage of the children whom this money is being raised for. “It’s a special fundraiser for other children born with heart conditions,” said Ethan, now nine-years-old. “Because when I was born I had a heart contusion and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh saved me. They saved my life.” Ethan’s godmother and chairperson for the event, Karen Pesage, said they expected to raise over $30,000 from this year’s event, which also included auction items. “The Penguins have been very generous partners,” she said. “We look forward to many successful ‘Little Hearts’ fundraisers in the future.”

PENGUINS DEVELOPING AMATEUR

HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

93

continued from page 93

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the team. Designed to sell remaining game day inventory, the Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2015-16 season, an estimated 200 Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. Eligible students have access to purchase these tickets through an exclusive, day of game, online pre-sale. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text also includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several games have been designated special Student Rush nights. For these games, at least 500 tickets will be available online! For more information on the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush program, the terms and conditions and a schedule of special Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush. Your carrier’s standard messaging and data rates apply to all SMS correspondence. Additional charges may also apply. This service is available on participating carriers. All tickets are subject to availability. To end this service, text STOP to 32623. For help, text HELP to 32623 or email cservice@pittsburghpenguins.com or call 1-800-642-7367.

HOCKEY

ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.

DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!

T:8.5”

B:8.75”

S:7.5”

HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.

NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!

3.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!

4.

CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

5.

It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!

6.

Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. For more information about Heads UP Pittsburgh and testing locations, visit our website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

MAATTA FEELS BLESSED WITH SIX-YEAR EXTENSION By: Sam Kasan

Pittsburgh has been home for defenseman Olli Maatta from the very beginning. Literally. Maatta was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2012 NHL Draft, which was held at CONSOL Energy Center. So Maatta spent a week in his new hometown before even realizing it would be home. “It was a big snapshot in my career,” Maatta said. “I remember that day like yesterday, being in Pittsburgh and getting picked by Pittsburgh was awesome. It felt like home right away when I was there.” And now, thanks to a six-year contract extension Maatta signed with the Penguins on Feb. 26, Pittsburgh will remain home for the foreseeable future. “I’m really happy I got a long deal,” the 21-year-old said. “I love this city. I really settled down well. With this team, we have a chance to compete in Stanley Cup [Playoffs] and win the Stanley Cup every year. That’s really important. “It feels awesome. I’m blessed to be here. I’m really happy to be a part of this organization for this long and even longer.” Maatta, who could have opted to sign a shorter-term deal to hit unrestricted free agency sooner, chose instead to make Pittsburgh continued on page 131

home through the 2021-22 season with an average annual value of $4.083 million. “I want to be a part of the Penguins. I like this organization a lot,” he said. “I like the team here. We have a great team every year with [Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Marc-Andre Fleury] in net. I’m just happy to be a part of it. My goal is to be here for a long time.” Maatta (6-foot-2, 206 pounds) is enjoying one of the best seasons of his short pro career. When his contract extension was announced, he had six goals, 16 points and a plus-18 in 53 games while his plus-18 ranked third among all NHL defensemen. “I think it’s great for Pittsburgh’s organization. It’s great for Olli,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “Hopefully, Olli will get a lot of confidence out of it because he’ll understand how this organization values him and how good of a player that we think he is. It’s great for him and great for us as well.” Maatta has bounced back remarkably this season after a shoulder injury and cancerous tumor limited him to just 20 games in his sophomore campaign in 2014-15. The Jyvaskyla, Finland native is happy to have put that season behind him. “I don’t even think of last season any more. I’m over it,” Maatta said. “I’m happy I’m back on the ice and I feel great playing out there.” Maatta has played with All-Star blueliner Letang for the majority of the season, and the two have become the team’s top defensive pair. continued on page 132

continued from page 131

“I think they’re a very good pair. I think they compliment each other very well,” Sullivan said. “One of Olli’s strengths is his hockey sense. He sees the ice really well. He makes pretty good decisions with the puck. He has the ability to play at both ends of the rink. ‘Tanger’ is a guy, a pretty dynamic player that plays at both ends as well. We feel they compliment each other very well. We like the tandem.” And with both blueliners signed to lengthy contracts that run through the 2021-22 season, it could be a pair that plays together for many years. “That would be fun,” Letang said. “We have a chance to build on something that we have going right now. It would be cool.” Even though he is just 21 years old, Maatta plays and lives well beyond his years. The team has raved about his maturity from his very first training camp as a wide-eyed 18-year-old. “From the start when he came in with us, his maturity was a big thing, how he acts on and off the ice,” Letang said. “He’s a true professional. He trains hard. He is always focused.” And don’t think that Maatta will be complacent with his new deal. Despite all of the Penguins’ immense talent, Maatta doesn’t want to be another brick in the wall. He wants to be a difference-maker. “My mindset is to be a big part of this team. I want to produce out there. I don’t just want to a part of the team,” Maatta said. “I want to play a big role. That’s my goal. That’s what I work toward every day. That’s my mindset going out there. I want to help the team the best way that I can.” And thanks to his autograph, Maatta will be able to do that for at least the next six years.

For a little perspective on how high the expectations have risen for Penguins goaltender Matt Murray, consider this: When World Cup of Hockey initial rosters were announced on March 2, the bigger upset would have been if Murray’s name was excluded from Team North America, versus being included. Alas, when the NHL and NHLPA jointly released the 16 players selected to team North America, Murray was one of three goaltenders chosen, his name right there next to Whitehall, PA native John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks and Winnipeg prospect Connor Hellebuyck. Team North America will be made up of the top American and Canadian players 23-years old and younger. Some of the supreme talents joining Murray on the roster are Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Buffalo’s Jack Eichel, the top-two selections from the 2015 NHL Draft. “It was exciting,” Murray told reporters in the Penguins’ locker room the next morning. “I didn’t know they were going to announce the team yesterday. It came out of nowhere. I got a call in the morning from [Team North America GM] Peter Chiarelli, and he explained to me what the deal was, and invited me to the team. Of course I accepted immediately. “It’s a huge honor. Before the season, I thought I was on the outside looking in. I knew about the team and one of my goals was to play my way onto the team. So I’m pretty happy about it for sure.” continued on page 144

continued from page 143

In reality, Murray was probably on the inside long before the season, with his AHL Goaltender and Rookie of the Year honors in 2014-15 among his many accomplishments a year ago that established him as one of the best goalie prospects in the world. But if there were any few lingering doubts as to whether Murray deserved inclusion on Team North America, they were erased during his first NHL stint in December. Pressed into duty when Marc-Andre Fleury suffered a concussion, Murray went 2-1-1 in four starts, never giving up more than two goals. His performance went a long way to beginning the Penguins’ revival that has them currently sitting back inside the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Fast forwarding ahead to the future, when the World Cup rolls around in September, Murray has high expectations for his team, even if the club will be the youngest in the tournament by a wide margin. “Everyone in the tournament is super competitive,” Murray said. “I know us young guys are looking to prove ourselves to the established teams. I definitely don’t think anyone is going to hold back. “It’s the best of the best in our age group and on our continent. You look at the names on the list and you see some generational talents. To be mentioned in that group in quite the honor.”

INSIGHT RESONATES

FOR POTENTIAL PLAYOFF MATCHUPS By: Mike Prisuta

Points down the stretch are precious, but there’s sometimes more to be gained than just two points for teams that are paying close enough attention. The Penguins played two such games on March 1 at Washington and on March 3 at CONSOL Energy Center against the New York Rangers. They secured two of a possible four points in those two games, losing, 3-2, in Washington, D.C. and winning, 4-1, at home. But the Penguins might also have gained some valuable insight as to what will need to be applied in the event they hook up with the Capitals and/or the Rangers in the playoffs, insight that might just resonate. The lessons potentially learned in the two games involved, among other things: DAMAGE CONTROL The Penguins established a 2-0 lead against the Capitals, but the Caps struck just 39 seconds after Patric Hornqvist had given the Pens their 2-0 advantage and Washington wound up scoring the game’s final three goals. “We can’t give them momentum, that’s the bottom line,” Hornqvist said. “If we’re skating and doing the right things and not turning the puck over; get it deep. It’s not going to be fancy or pretty. It’s going to be dirty but sometimes you need to win that way, too.” Added head coach Mike Sullivan: “We have to control the momentum swings a little bit better. When we lose momentum we have to grab a hold of it. It starts with one shift, simplify the process, get pucks deep.” continued on page 155

153

continued from page 153

STAYING THE COURSE The Penguins have had their troubles with the Rangers as of late but this time they didn’t despair after falling behind, 1-0. “We could sense some of the frustration on the bench and we just talked about making sure we responded the right way,” Sullivan said. “The Rangers are a hard team to play against. They make you work for your offense. They always have numbers back [on defense]. We just had to make sure we were taking what the game gives us and we didn’t allow our frustration to become a distraction. “I thought our guys did a tremendous job responding the right way.” CAUSE AND EFFECT The Capitals outhit the Penguins, 32-19, and that physicality was a perceived factor in the outcome. But it was also something the Penguins believe they’re capable of doing something about. “I think we put ourselves in positions to get hit,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “When you’re going back for pucks continuously and you don’t execute they have an opportunity gain speed and get those hits in.” ATTACKING THE NET Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist had been a big factor in the Rangers’ recent success against the Penguins. But the more action he faced in the immediate vicinity of his net, the less effective Lundqvist became for a change. “We were putting pucks at the net,” Sullivan emphasized. “We were going to the net. It’s a good formula, regardless of who the goaltender is, to score goals.” continued on page 157

THE NEED TO BE DISCIPLINED The Washington game turned when Evgeni Malkin was called for high-sticking at 12:45 of the third period of what at the time was a 2-2 battle. The Capitals’ T.J. Oshie’s untied it with a powerplay goal less than a minute later. “You have to try to stay out of the penalty box,” Sullivan said. “Their power play has been very effective for them for a number of years now. Their power play wins a lot of games for them.” SHARP SHOOTING One of the reasons the Penguins got so many pucks to the vicinity of Lundqvist’s net was the Rangers’ shot-blockers weren’t getting in the way of seemingly everything and anything for a change. “You can’t pass up shooting opportunities because they’re good at blocking them,” Crosby said. “You have to find a way to get them through. That’s up to the guys shooting them. It doesn’t mean you have to be more selective or anything like that but it’s something you have to be aware of. “If you can fake it and get them to bite, go on one knee and hopefully create some space then you do that. But I think for the most part you try to have the same mentality and get them through.”

As part of this commitment, the Penguins’ Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program was introduced to Mr. Rosi’s fifth grade class at Neil Armstrong Middle School. “All of our students have some sort of familiar tie to the Penguins,so bringing this program into the classroom brought instant interest to the topics,” said Mr. Rosi. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of the game while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. Sample course topics include: Geometry: measuring the angle of a bank pass and the Law of Reflection Phases of Matter: manipulating air and ice temperature for the perfect game time surface “It was fantastic to see one student in particular who has had trouble with math work through each lesson independently and improve her number-sense and arithmetic. I’ve even heard other students comment that it’s like they’re ‘on’ the Penguins team as they earn trophies for module completion alongside Crosby and Malkin!” If you’re a 4th-7th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team they’ve never seen before.”

MEET THE PENGUINS 2015

DRAFT CLASS DANIEL SPRONG

Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), has become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

DOMINIK SIMON

Forward • 5th round, 137th overall Simon has played his entire career in the Czech Republic League. He played the 2014-15 season for HC Plzen, a team owned by former Penguins player Martin Straka, and finished tied for third on the team with 30 points (18G-12A) in 52 games. continued on page 191

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.

FREDERICK TIFFELS

Forward • 6th round, 167th overall In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college. Tiffels is a big soccer fan and follows his hometown club, FC Koln. His favorite player on the team is Lukas Podolski.

NIKITA PAVLYCHEV

Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.
