RW Vladimir Tarasenko followed up last season’s 37-goal effort with 33 goals through the Blues’ first 70 games. That made Tarasenko the first St. Louis player to post backto-back 30-goal seasons since Brad Boyes in 2007-08 (43) and 2008-09 (33).

HAPPY NEW YEAR:

Nashville LW Filip Forsberg netted 18 goals in the Predators’ first 31 games of the calendar year and trailed only Alex Ovechkin (20), Sidney Crosby (19) and Brad Marchand (19) in goals since Jan. 1 at that juncture. Forsberg’s surge pushed his season total to a career-high 28 goals, two more than the 26 Forsberg netted last season.

Islanders head coach Jack Capuano registered his 200th NHL win on March 3 against the Jets. G Jaroslav Halak earned his 200th NHL win on March 8 against the Penguins. And C John Tavares scored his 200th NHL goal on March 12 against the Bruins.

OH SAY CAN JUSSI:

Panthers LW Jussi Jokinen picked up an assist on March 12 against Philadelphia and tied his career-high points streak at 10 consecutive games (2+10). The streak was the longest by a Panthers player this season and the longest since Olli Jokinen’s 10-game run in 2005-06 (6+10). The last time Jussi Jokinen reeled off such a streak was in 2010 with Carolina. His assist against the Flyers pushed him to the 50-point plateau for the fifth time in his career and for the first time since 2013-14 (57 points with the Penguins).

STREAKBUSTERS:

The Canucks beat the Predators on March 12 and snapped Nashville’s franchise-record points streak at 14 consecutive games. Vancouver had previously halted the Canadiens’ season-opening, nine-game winning streak on Oct. 27 and put an end to the Panthers’ franchise-record 12-game winning streak on Jan. 11.

THE SERIES [VS] CAPITALS

On March 20 the Penguins host the Washington Capitals for the fourth regular season meeting of the teams this campaign and final one here in Pittsburgh. They will faceoff once more before the playoffs begin, that coming April 7 at Washington. . . The Capitals have won two of the previous three games with Pittsburgh this season, including the last two. In Washington on March 1, T.J. Oshie’s power play goal with 6:22 to play gave the Capitals a 3-2 victory. Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist had given the Penguins a 2-0 second-period lead in that game. . . Here on Dec. 14, in Mike Sullivan’s debut as Penguins’ coach, Oshie scored twice and Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and two assists in a 4-1 Washington win. . . The first meeting of the season went to Pittsburgh, 3-1, in Washington on Oct. 28 as Beau Bennett, Phil Kessel and Nick Bonino scored third-period goals. . . The Penguins have won only two of their last seven regular season games against Washington and have lost three straight home games to the Capitals, scoring a total of two goals. Prior to this streak, the Penguins had won five consecutive home games against Washington. . . Pittsburgh is 1-for-26 on the power play in its last eight games against the Capitals. . . On March 24 the Penguins will host New Jersey after a three-day break, their last such break this regular season. . . This is the fourth and final game between the teams this season. Since a 4-0 road loss on Nov. 14 — Corey Schneider’s second consecutive shutout of the Penguins — Pittsburgh has won two straight against the Devils. At home on Jan. 26, Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 saves and Crosby and Kessel scored to help the Penguins to a 2-0 victory. . . In New Jersey on March 6, Bryan Rust had a careerhigh three points and Malkin scored twice in a 6-1 Pittsburgh victory. . . The Penguins have not won three straight games against the Devils in one season since Nov. 1–March 11 in Crosby’s rookie season, 2005-06. . . The Penguins have won five consecutive home games against New Jersey, matching their longest such streak in team history, first done Feb. 28, 1990 through Jan. 22, 1991. . . Pittsburgh moved within two points of the third-place Islanders in the Metropolitan Division on March 13 with a 5-3 victory in New York against the Rangers as rookie Conor Sheary had his first two-goal game in the NHL. That game also marked the first game without Malkin, who is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks with an upper-body injury suffered March 11 at Columbus. . . Crosby had points in eight straight games (4+9) before facing the Islanders here March 15. . . He went into that game with points in 15 of his last 18 home games (18+13). . . Fleury became the 20th goaltender in NHL history to record 350 wins when he beat the Blue Jackets in Columbus, 3-2, on March 11. . . Kris Letang’s 79th career goal in that game left him second behind Paul Coffey (108) on the Penguins’ all-time list of goals by defensemen. . . Dominik Simon made his NHL debut in the win over the Rangers, picking up an assist. He became just the sixth Pittsburgh player drafted in the fifth round or later to make his NHL debut in his first season with the team.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP By Calvin Isaac

The 2016 Toyota USA Hockey National Championships are right around the corner. Champions will be crowned in 10 cities nationwide, with each tournament being contested in March and/ or April 2016. USA Hockey has been conducting national championships since 1938 with teams from 35 different states being crowned champions in various classifications over the course of the 76-year history of the event. Recently, multiple teams from the Penguins Elite program traveled to Columbus, OH to play in the MidAm District tournament. It was an intense tournament with high caliber teams trying to compete for a spot to play in the USA Hockey National Championship Tournament. The 2001 Elite went 3-1 at the Tier I MidAm Districts to capture the title and secure their place in Anchorage, AL for Nationals. The team finished their last 3 games with victories of 6-1 over the Ohio Blue Jackets, 6-2 over the Cleveland Barons, and 5-0 over the TriState Spartans. The 19U girls capped off a gutsy weekend with a 4-1 domination of Columbus to win the Tier 1 MidAm District Championship and advance to Nationals located in Minneapolis, MN. They went 2-1 on the weekend, with a shootout win over Gilmour on Saturday to set up their championship victory on Sunday. In addition to the 14U Boys and 19U girls Tier I District Champions, the Penguins Elite 14U and 16U girlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teams will also be traveling to Minneapolis, MN. With an automatic playoff berth, they will have a chance to compete for a National Championship as well! Good luck to all of our teams at the USA Hockey National Championships Tournament!

As goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury continues to knock down career milestones, he also continues to learn. When the Penguins visited Columbus on March 11, the Blue Jackets’ Cam Atkinson deked to his forehand to net a breakaway goal at 2:59 of the second period and tie the score, 2-2. A few minutes later, Atkinson got another breakaway. . . . . . and Fleury said no. Fleury flattened out to poke the puck off Atkinson’s stick before he could make a move. “I didn’t want to see what he was doing for that one,” Fleury said after. The Penguins beat the Jackets, 3-2, giving Fleury career win No. 350. Fleury is the 20th goalie to reach that mark. He did so in 645 games, quicker than all but three goalies (Martin Brodeur, Henrik Lundqvist, Chris Osgood). “It’s pretty cool,” Fleury said of win No. 350. “I didn’t know before the game that was coming up. “I’m just happy we won tonight, and got those two points. But that makes it a little more special.” Fleury followed No. 350 with No. 351 less than 48 hours later as the Penguins beat the New York Rangers on March 13 at Madison Square Garden, 5-3. Fleury made 24 saves, including 18 in a tumultuous first period that saw the Penguins escape tied, 1-1, before pressing on for a big Metropolitan Division victory. Fleury, 31, is already the Penguins all-time leader in wins and shutouts (43). But Fleury, the first pick overall in the 2003 NHL Draft, seems very likely to achieve bigger and better by the time his career ends. Fleury starting for four more years is not an unreasonable assumption. Winning at least 30 games in each of those years is also realistic. That would put Fleury No. 4 on the NHL’s all-time wins list, and make him a lock for the Hockey Hall of Fame. The wins at Columbus and New York put Fleury’s record on the year at 29-16-6 with five shutouts. His goals-against average stood at 2.35, his save percentage .921. “It’s fun playing here,” Fleury said about winning at Columbus, the Penguins’ closest rival geographically. “We always have a lot of fans here. “The fans from each team cheer a lot. It makes for a real good atmosphere. I got booed pretty good when I played in the All-Star Game here [in 2015]. So it was fun to win here.” The Penguins’ 3-2 triumph was unusual. All the goals were scored in the game’s first 25 minutes, including three in the first continued on page 31

4:47 of the second period. But then defense and goaltending took over. “Early in the second there were a few breakaways,” Fleury said. “But then we kept it tight. The forwards helped out in our end. We did a great job blocking shots, and letting me see the puck. It was a big help.” The game was physical. Evgeni Malkin left the game hurt and will miss six-to-eight weeks. Scott Wilson and Brian Dumoulin left the ice to be treated for injuries. “They have big guys out there, guys who finish their checks,” Fleury said. “I love how we stuck with it and used our speed to skate around them and create scoring chances.” Fleury is likely to jump to No. 18 on the all-time victories list before season’s end: At 351 wins, Fleury trailed retired goaltenders Evgeni Nabokov and Rogie Vachon by two and four wins, respectively. After that comes former Penguin Tom Barrasso, who amassed 369 career victories during a 19-year career that saw him play for Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Carolina, Toronto and St. Louis. The only active goalies to have more victories than Fleury are Florida’s Roberto Luongo (429) and the New York Rangers’ Lundqvist (370).

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

Jason Botterill is in his second season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WB/S Penguins have made the playoffs all six years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 39, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. MIKE SULLIVAN HEAD COACH

Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Assistant coach Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization. In his current role, he oversees the club’s defensemen and its penalty killing unit. Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams was a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses. A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND BROADCASTING

Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder. Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond. Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

In addition to the tournament, the team held an online auction of all their autographed bowling shirts from March 8 through March 18. When a set of street clothes dangled from the rafters of CONSOL Energy Center before practice on March 4, with “NEW GUY” spelled out in tape on the coat, it was something that should be familiar to Penguins fans as it’s a prank the team has pulled before. But funnily enough, it was also familiar to new Penguins defenseman Justin Schultz — who was the target of this most recent instance. “I don’t know what I was watching, maybe YouTube or something, but I actually saw [the Penguins] do it to someone else a while ago,” Schultz grinned. “That’s what I thought about right when I saw it. It’s pretty funny.” The victim in question could have been Bryan Rust, as he was subjected to the prank just last year. “It’s all in good fun. It’s a welcome to the team,” Rust said. “It’s something where you walk on the ice and you don’t notice it at first and guys are pointing and laughing, then all of a sudden you look up in shock and you can’t help but laugh.” When asked if he knew who was behind it, Schultz claimed he heard guys saying Sidney Crosby was responsible — but the captain pleaded innocent. “We’ll see who did it, we’ll try to find out,” Crosby grinned. “But most times, those guys don’t get caught.” Rust can attest to that, as he still doesn’t know who pranked him last year. But he’s willing to team up with Schultz and ask some tough questions around the room so they can both have some closure. “The investigation continues,” Rust laughed. “It was probably the same culprit, so I’ll help ‘Schultzy’ figure that out.”

HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the Sports Director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Born and raised in Landshut, Germany, Tom Kuhnhackl moved to North America in 2010 to play in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Since then, he has played in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), American Hockey League (AHL), and now finally, the National Hockey League. Kuhnhackl made his NHL debut on Jan. 9 against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre, and he was thrilled to realize his dream. “At the start it was a little nerve-racking with our first game and being around all these guys,” Kuhnhackl said. “But I think every day I feel more and more comfortable.” Kuhnhackl, who turned 24 just 12 days after premiering with the Penguins, was drafted by Pittsburgh in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. After dealing with numerous injuries over the next few seasons, Kuhnhackl had a strong 2014-15 campaign with Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton — setting career-highs in games played (72), goals (12), assists (18) and points (30). Prior to being recalled to the Penguins this season, Kuhnhackl tallied 15 points (7+8) in 23 AHL games with WB/S. “I think Tommy’s come a long way,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “He’s a good player. You can see the value he brings to our team.” continued on page 131

So far in his rookie season, Kuhnhackl has collected a few points but knows that he was not brought onto the team to contribute huge numbers offensively. Instead, he does everything he can to support the team in the smaller areas of the game. “I think I just have to do the job a lot of guys don’t like doing,” Kuhnhackl said. “Getting in on the forecheck, finishing hits, blocking shots, just doing the dirty work.” Kuhnhackl has been particularly valuable to the team on the penalty kill this season, especially when the team had to compensate for the loss of injured players like Nick Bonino and Eric Fehr. So it’s fitting Kuhnhackl earned his first NHL goal shorthanded on Feb. 20 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Kuhnhackl cleared a puck past Lightning defensemen Victor Hedman and used his strength and speed to get himself on a breakaway. Realizing he had time and space, Kuhnhackl confidently took the puck to the net, deked to his backhand and lifted it over the glove of Bolts goaltender Ben Bishop. “Obviously it felt great to get the first one off the back,” Kuhnhackl said. “It took me long enough, and hopefully now I can get the streak going.” It is a big jump from the AHL to NHL and not all players have the ability to seamlessly transition from one style of play to the other. When asked about it, they are quick to respond that the speed of the game is one of the biggest differences. “Every player in this league has great foot speed and has a great mindset going into every game being a hundred percent focused,” Kuhnhackl explained. “So it’s a big difference.” continued on page 132

Mental focus is often one of the most difficult parts of the game for younger players to manage, but Kuhnhackl knows that he has to concentrate on how he can contribute to the team. “I’m just trying to do my job not making any mistakes, earning the coaches’ trust, and earning more and more ice time,” he said. “I think I’ve done a pretty good job so far.” Sullivan also thinks that he has done a good job so far, and he appreciates what Kuhnhackl brings to the team. “He’s the type of player that does a lot of the subtleties of the game that help your team win, but they don’t necessarily show up on the score sheet or the average fan may not see it because it’s not on the highlight reel,” Sullivan said. “But he does a lot of the subtleties of the game, [starting with] his wall play. He blocks shots. He makes good decisions with the puck. He forces teams to have to play 200 feet. He’s physical when the time comes. He goes to the net. He does all of those things that I think make teams difficult to play against, and I think he’s brought that to our team here.” Sullivan has seen a lot of progress in Kuhnhackl’s game, and expects him to continue to get better as he goes along. After all, this is only his rookie season. “As far as his development this year, his pace has improved, and his decision making and how quickly he makes those decisions has improved,” Sullivan said. “Part of that is just establishing himself in this league and being forced to have to play at a higher tempo because that’s the difference between the NHL and every other league in the world. Certainly we appreciate what he brings, and we value what he brings to this team.”

CULLEN’S VERSATILITY A MUCH-NEEDED ASSET By: Dave Uhrmacher

In late July the Penguins acquired a pair of centers, Eric Fehr and Nick Bonino, on the same day to bolster their depth down the middle. Two weeks later, still not satisfied with its roster, Pittsburgh sought another addition. At the time 38 years old, Matt Cullen had played 17 NHL seasons to date, won a Stanley Cup championship with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2005-06, and had just posted 64 points over two seasons with the Nashville Predators. Cullen’s nine seasons with 35 or more points, the Stanley Cup ring and 1,212 games played since 1997-98 could have been enough. But Cullen knew he was not done yet, and an old friend had the same feeling. Penguins’ general manager Jim Rutherford, also the executive that put together the Stanley Cup winning squad that Cullen played a key role on in Carolina, knew what type of player he would be acquiring in Cullen. Much to the credit of Rutherford’s foresight, Cullen has not failed to meet expectations. One might even say he has exceeded them. Cullen, in his 18th NHL season, has carved out a key role for the Penguins during the 2015-16 season. Originally slotted to play center on the fourth line, Cullen has seen his role change quite often over the course of the 68 games he has played in. He has totaled 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points in those 68 games. continued on page 144

Injuries, promotions and demotions have led to a constant rotation of forwards grouped with Cullen. He had played the majority of the last month with Bryan Rust and Tom Kuhnhackl. Despite this, Cullen has found a way to be one of Pittsburgh’s most consistent forwards. On special teams, Cullen has led Pittsburgh’s forward group on its shorthanded unit all season. On the scoring front, the veteran pivot may have saved his best for last. Cullen has five goals in his last 13 games as of March 14, including a game-winning tally in the third period of a momentum-shifting win versus the Rangers on March 13. That goal came in the first game after Pittsburgh lost star center Evgeni Malkin for 6-8 weeks with an upper-body injury. “It was such an important game for us to respond to losing one of our most important players,” Cullen said. “Really we are a battletested team, we have gone through a lot this year. We have continued to find a way to get things done.” And with only a dozen or so games remaining, the team would be wise to continue following Cullen’s veteran leadership. “I think the biggest key is continuing to take the approach that we need to continue to improve all season. I think that we have done that. As a team I think we are continuing to grow and battle adversity.”

The recent forecast of a six-to-eight-week absence for Evgeni Malkin due to an upper body injury was about the last thing the Penguins wanted to hear. But for the Penguins the necessary response is at least as familiar as Malkin’s unavailability for an extended stretch is disappointing. “Obviously, he’s one of the best players in the league,” winger Carl Hagelin observed after a 3-2 win on March 11 in Columbus. “When he’s gone it’s going to hurt us but at the same time other guys are going to have to step up and do the job.” Hagelin’s return after missing two games due to injury occurred in the same game from which Malkin ultimately departed for an extended period for the second time this season. The Penguins went 5-4-1 over a 10-game stretch from Feb. 5 through Feb. 24 minus Malkin. And it’s not as if Malkin has been the only key component whose absence the Penguins have been forced to work around. continued on page 155

Among the others: Defenseman Olli Maatta missed six consecutive games from mid-November to early December. Winger Pascal Dupuis was forced to retire for health reasons after appearing in just 18 of the Penguins’ first 26 games. Center Eric Fehr made it back onto the ice the same night as Hagelin, only Fehr had been on the shelf for 17 consecutive games (Fehr had also missed the season’s first 10 games). Winger Beau Bennett had missed 37 of the last 38 games and 42 of 67 through the Penguins’ victory over the Blue Jackets and remained sidelined during the Penguins’ 5-3 victory over the Rangers on March 13 at Madison Square Garden. Defenseman Ben Lovejoy missed 10 games in a row in advance of the Penguins hosting the New York Islanders on March 15 at CONSOL Energy Center. Defenseman Kris Letang missed 10 of the Penguins’ first 67 games. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury missed eight games in a season that has been defined to no small degree by how often the Penguins have had to deal with injuries. Center Matt Cullen took some solace in their ability to cope with the various challenges that have popped up on the injury front since October, and was particularly encouraged by the result obtained in that first game of Malkin’s second extended stretch as a spectator, the 5-3 victory over the Rangers. continued on page 157

“This is such an important game for us to respond to losing one of our most important players,” Cullen said. “Really, we are kind of a battle-tested team. We’ve have gone through a lot this year and we’ve kind of continued to find a way to get things done. “We gotta just continue to do what we’re doing. I think the biggest key is that we’ve taken the approach that we want to continue to improve all season long, and I think that we have. As a team we’re continuing to grow and we’re dealing with adversity.” A steady influx of reinforcements from the AHL Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins helped the NHL Penguins get things done heading into the stretch run. They’ll need more of the same the rest of the way from players such as wingers Conor Sheary and Bryan Rust when necessary the rest of the way. Both showed up in the Rangers game, Sheary with a multiplegoal effort and Rust by racing into the Rangers’ end to help turn a potential icing against the Penguins into the empty-net goal that sealed the deal. “This is a great opportunity for players that are going to have a chance to play a more significant role because of the injuries that we have and some of the holes in our lineup,” head coach Mike Sullivan insisted. “I thought our young guys did a terrific job as far as seizing the moment. “It’s little things. Conor Sheary gets two goals but Bryan Rust chases down a puck with less than a minute to go to negate an icing where they would have had a 6-on-5 face-off [in the Penguins’ end]. It’s those little things, it’s the subtle things that these guys are bringing to our team that makes us more difficult to play against and helps us win.”

HOCKEY SCHOLAR NEIL ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL Bethel Park School District has committed to creating opportunities for students to develop 21st century technology skills. As part of this commitment, the Penguins’ Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program was introduced to Mr. Rosi’s fifth grade class at Neil Armstrong Middle School. “All of our students have some sort of familiar tie to the Penguins,so bringing this program into the classroom brought instant interest to the topics,” said Mr. Rosi. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of the game while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), has become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.

Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. For Pittsburgh Penguins games, all alcohol sales within the arena will conclude at the beginning of the third period. Individual concerts and events are determined on a show-by-show basis.

ATM MACHINES For the convenience of our fans, ATMs are available in CONSOL Energy Center: First Niagara Bank - Outside section 119 and 230, and in the lobby of the Trib Total Media Gate PNC Bank on PNC Legends Level - Outside of party suite 44 and suite 13

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

AUTOMOTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AAA will have a “Puck Truck” at all Penguins home games. The “Puck Truck” is available to assist patrons that have trouble with their vehicles in CONSOL Energy Center lots only. Fans can call 1.800.AAA.HELP after the start of the third period.

BABY CHANGING STATIONS Baby changing stations are available in all restrooms, located on all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

to inform guests of the situation and any instructions as applicable. All exits and emergency exits are posted with appropriate signage.

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: Peoples Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Items lost at events are held in storage for thirty (30) days and then either disposed of or donated to an appropriate charity.

A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. In September 2015, the last North Park McCandless dek rink was completed Paul J. Scuillo II Memorial Park Bloomfield bringing the total Renzie Park McKeesport completed rinks to 12. Richland Community Park Richland Twp. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.
