GHOST STORIES:

Philadelphia rookie D Shayne Gostisbehere accounted for 16 goals in his first 52 games this season and all of them either tied a game, gave the Flyers a lead or eventually stood as the game-winning goal.

Gostisbehere’s first 39 points (16+23) had him ranked sixth among NHL rookies in scoring despite his having missed 18 of Philadelphia’s first 70 games.

He also had a 15-game scoring streak from Jan. 19 – Feb. 20, something only Eric Lindros, Bobby Clarke and Brian Propp had accomplished previously in Flyers’ history.

HOME SWEET HOME:

The Islanders went 6-0-1 in their first seven home games after the All-Star break and outscored their opponents 29-13 on Brooklyn ice.

TRIPLEFIGURES: Kings

D Rob Scuderi recorded his 100th career assist on March 15 against Dallas.

BOUNCEBACK FACTOR:

The Rangers’ 40-24-8 record through 72 games included a

12-game winning streak in games that followed a loss in regulation, dating back to Dec. 22, 2015 against Anaheim.

It was the longest such streak in one season in Rangers’ history.

FOUR OF A KIND:

Calgary G Niklas Backstrom, who had been acquired by the Flames from Minnesota, beat Montreal, 4-1, in his Calgary debut on March 20.

That made the Flames one of just three teams to have four goaltenders record a victory this season (Columbus and Montreal were the others). The win was also Calgary’s eighth in 10 tries against Canadian teams this season (8-1-1).

OH SHEA CAN YOU SEE:

Nashville D Shea Weber amassed 45 points (17+28) in the Predators’ first 72 games (Weber appeared in 69 of those).

That marked the fifth time in the last six seasons that Weber has reached the 45-point plateau.

Only Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson can also make that claim among NHL defensemen. Weber’s 99 goals at that juncture led all NHL blueliners since 2010-11.

THE SERIES [VS] SABRES

On March 29 the Penguins face the Buffalo Sabres for the third and final time this season. The Penguins have won both previous games this season by 4-3 scores, Oct. 29 here and Feb. 21 in Buffalo. . . Back in October, second-period goals by Ben Lovejoy and Evgeni Malkin broke a 2-2 tie and Jeff Zatkoff made 50 saves in the victory. Patric Hornqvist and Pascal Dupuis also scored for Pittsburgh . . . In the February meeting, the Penguins built a 4-1 lead on goals from Hornqvist, Scott Wilson, Phil Kessel and Matt Cullen and then held on for the victory. Kris Letang had three assists in that win. . . The Penguins have won eight consecutive games against Buffalo, their longest win streak against the Sabres.

Buffalo’s last win in the series came here on April 23, 2013 (4-2).

During this current eight-game win streak, the Penguins have allowed Buffalo a total of nine goals. . . But Kessel scored just 41 seconds into OT to produce a 2-1 Pittsburgh victory. . . The last time the Predators were in Pittsburgh, Feb. 1 of last season, Roman Josi scored one goal and set up another and Carter Hutton made 21 saves in a 4-0 victory. . . Pittsburgh moved into second place in the Metropolitan Division on March 20 with a 6-2 home win over Washington, completing an impressive weekend that began with a 4-1 win in Philadelphia on March 19.

The Penguins allowed a total of 35 shots in those two games . . . This year, the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex hosted the 2016 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League Penguins Cup presented by Shop ‘n Save and Trib Total Media. The Penguins Cup consisted of multiple high school teams from across the area competing in A, AA, and AAA divisions to have the chance to become the 2016 Penguins Cup Champions. With thousands of PIHL fans supporting their respective teams throughout the Championship games, the high school teams did not disappoint.

The 2016 Class A Penguins Cup Championship game was played between the South Fayette Lions and the Franklin Regional Panthers. It was a hard fought game between the two hockey clubs, but the Franklin Regional Panthers’ defense proved to be too hard to break as they topped the Lions, 4-1.

The 2016 Class AA Penguins Cup Championship game was played between the Bishop Canevin Crusaders and the Mars Fighting Planets. The goaltender for Bishop Canevin, Neko Borghini, stood strong in-between the pipes and helped the team secure a 5-1 win over Mars.

The 2016 Class AAA Penguins Cup Championship game was a nail biter for both teams. The North Allegheny Tigers and the Erie Cathedral Prep Ramblers were both extremely determined and closely matched. With a tie game at the end of three periods, the Ramblers prevailed in overtime with a 4-3 win over the Tigers.

Congratulations to all of the teams who competed in the PIHL Penguins Cup. The Champions moved on to play the teams who won the PIHL Flyers Cup for the State Finals in the Pegula Ice Arena at Penn State on March 19.

Left winger Chris Kunitz has skated on a line centered by Sidney Crosby for the better part of this decade. For Kunitz, their chemistry has produced big numbers, a first-team NHL All-Star berth in 2012-13 and an Olympic gold medal with Canada in 2014.

“Whatever Sid brings to the table helps our line,” Kunitz said.

“We try to do the same basic things. Go get pucks. Try to get to the net. He creates space by drawing two guys. Things work out when you’re playing with one of the best players on the ice.”

They certainly do.

Kunitz joined the Penguins on Feb. 26, 2009. He came to Pittsburgh from Anaheim in a trade that sent defenseman Ryan Whitney to the Ducks.

Since joining the Penguins, Kunitz has 158 goals and 197 assists in 487 games (as of March 19). His best campaign was the lockoutshortened 2012-13, when he had 22 goals and 30 assists in 48 games. The 6-foot, 195-pound Saskatchewan native followed that in 2013-14 with 35 goals and 33 assists in 78 games.

But this season, at 36, Kunitz was projected for a third-line role. That would have been a smooth transition. Kunitz has the grit and physicality to fill such a spot. He ranked seventh in the NHL with 238 hits after 69 games.

But Crosby started a bit slow. So the Penguins again turned to the familiarity that has long existed between the two. Patric Hornqvist took the right wing slot.

Crosby came around in a big way: After 70 games, the captain had 31 goals and 43 assists. After 69 games, Kunitz weighed in with 15 goals and 21 assists.

Crosby and Kunitz have even found a new venue for their rapport: Three-on-three overtime, inaugurated this season by the NHL. Crosby and Kunitz often skate three-on-three together.

“It’s fun. [Sid] finds those pockets of ice that make it so much easier,” Kunitz said after the Penguins defeated the visiting New York Islanders 2-1 via shootout on March 15. “Guys start watching him. We had three or four good, quality chances [in OT] but didn’t hit the net. We had a lot of chances to end it in overtime and not take it to the shootout.”

The victory over the Islanders netted the Penguins two points.

But the path there wasn’t easy.

Kunitz gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead at 15:51 of the first period by deflecting Brian Dumoulin’s shot from the point past Islanders netminder Jean-Francois Berube. But the Penguins couldn’t continued on page 31

beat Berube again, and a power-play goal by the Islanders’ Kyle Okposo with 5:25 left in regulation play forced OT and, ultimately, a shootout. The Penguins won the skills competition, 1-0, on Kris Letang’s goal.

“We did a lot of good things in the first period, but then we slowed down and took our foot off the gas into the second and third periods,” Kunitz said. “It resulted in them getting a powerplay goal, and they had some good chances in overtime. But our goaltender [Marc-Andre Fleury] was the best player on the ice.”

As for his goal, Kunitz said, “It was a fairly easy play. There wasn’t a lot of battling. I just floated toward the net. [Dumoulin] threw a puck at the net that was tippable. It was going on net, but I got a chance to tip it, and it worked out in our favor.”

Kunitz got another goal in a 4-1 victory at Philadelphia on March 19. Kunitz came late, collected a Crosby feed and rifled a slap shot from the top of the slot. He missed the net, but the puck caromed off the backboards, hit the skate of Flyers goalie Steve Mason and slid across the goal line.

Kunitz looks at his role with the Penguins modestly and simply: “I’m not a guy who’s out there looking for glory. I just want to help my team win.”

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999.

Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009.

Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America.

Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups.

A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033).

After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era.

In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org.

David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation.

Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007.

Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen.

Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team.

In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh.

Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006.

Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989.

Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 39, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team.

Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars.

Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points.

A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996.

Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years.

Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14.

Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects.

Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title.

Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations.

Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford.

Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games.

After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury.

MIKE SULLIVAN HEAD COACH

Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015.

Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak.

Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002.

A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm.

As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston.

Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver.

In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy.

During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff.

Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona.

A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games.

Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship.

RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins.

In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards.

Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010.

Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes.

A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Assistant coach Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization. In his current role, he oversees the club’s defensemen and its penalty killing unit.

Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach.

Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis.

He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions.

Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13.

Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry.

Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft.

Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92.

Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business.

In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.

Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events.

Previously, Williams was a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses.

A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

TERRY KALNA

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND BROADCASTING

Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder.

Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond.

Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

Oskar Sundqvist was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round of the 2012 NHL Draft, but this is his first year playing hockey in North America.

“It’s been different, but it’s been great so far,” he said. “I have nothing to complain about. It’s been fun. It’s a long way from home.

It’s going to be a little bit different outside of the rink, but it’s been fun so far.”

Sundqvist made his NHL debut on Feb. 5 versus the Tampa Bay Lightning and settled into the role of a fourth-line center — where he was forced to quickly adjust to the pace of an NHL game.

“The speed. That’s the biggest difference,” Sundqvist explained.

“The players are a little bit more skilled here too and every pass is always on the tape.”

The 21-year-old is doing a solid job of acclimating himself, but it’s different from the kind of hockey he was used to in Sweden.

“The rink is smaller here, so everything goes a little bit quicker,” Sundqvist said. “You don’t have as much time with the puck. The rinks are so big in Sweden you have a couple of seconds to think when you’ve got the puck there. Here you barely have one second.”

Although he is a long way from home, Sundqvist was lucky enough to find familiar faces from Wilkes-Barre to help him make the transition, both on and of the ice.

“It’s guys that I was friends with from down there so it makes it a lot easier to come up here,” Sundqvist said. “We’re all living at the same place. We ride together to the rink and stuff like that, so it’s nice to not have to go alone all the time.”

HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility.

“Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.”

The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program.

“The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.”

The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics.

Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players.

According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path.

“We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score.

“Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.”

Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane.

“Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.”

Designed to sell remaining game day inventory, the Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate.

With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers.

During the 2015-16 season, an estimated 200 Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network.

Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.

Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since.

Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07.

A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange.

A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa.

Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the Sports Director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association.

In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects.

The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players.

March 15, 2016 was a day Chris Kunitz will never forget.

Kunitz, 36, played in his 800th NHL game against the New York Islanders. No. 14 scored his 14th goal of the season, setting Pittsburgh up for their eventual 2-1 shootout win.

Eight hundred appearances might be on the short list of accomplishments for many players in the league. Like Sidney Crosby, who should make his 700th appearance before the end of March at age 28.

But the undrafted Kunitz took the path less traveled and built his skill set through the collegiate ranks at Ferris State University after struggling to garner attention from Canada’s top youth and junior leagues.

It was during his senior year with the Bulldogs that Kunitz started visualizing his future. He finished second in voting for the Hobey Baker Award, the Heisman of college hockey, and led his team to the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history — an early sign of success that followed him to the professional ranks. continued on page 131

Since his debut in 2003, Kunitz has built quite the résumé — collecting over 500 points, two Stanley Cups, a 2013 NHL First Team All-Star nomination and a gold medal from the 2014 Winter Olympics with Team Canada.

Kunitz said he doesn’t know when he’ll retire, and would like to make it to the 1,000 games milestone. Eventually, though, his time will come.

“There are different responsibilities you take on over the years,” Kunitz said. “If you can’t go out there and help your team in tough situations on the ice, that’s a pretty good indicator of when to go.”

Kunitz has established himself as a physical presence around the league, delivering over 1,500 hits in his 14-year career. As of March 20, he ranked first on the Penguins with 235.

Plenty has changed since the Saskatchewan native’s arrival, like the reduction of fighters in the league. Kunitz quickly established himself as someone willing to deliver a big hit when necessary, but he knows player safety is a big issue in hockey.

“The fighting aspect is an emotional part of the game that’s always been around,” Kunitz started. “But the fights that aren’t dictating how the game is played and aren’t built off emotion are the fights they’ve been trying to get away from. I think they’ve done a good job doing that.”

Kunitz spent parts of five seasons with the Anaheim Ducks before being traded to Pittsburgh at the deadline in 2008. But when asked about his favorite rivalry, Kunitz didn’t take long to answer. continued on page 132

“The year we won the Cup and beat Philly in the first round was something special,” Kunitz said. “It was my first full engagement in a crazy rivalry. It was a lot of fun and we had a lot of hardfought battles.”

In that 4-2 series win over Philadelphia, Kunitz led all Penguins with 17 hits — keeping the physicality on Pittsburgh’s side.

“All the games with Philly really stand out,” Kunitz continued. “They’re a true testament of how physical the game can get.

It’s changed a little now, but there’s still that same competitive juice that keeps flowing. The best part about playing in one of the greatest leagues is being able to compete at that high of a level.”

Kunitz noted traveling the world was one of the two highlights playing in the NHL offered. He has a handful of favorite spots, mostly in the south.

“I love playing the Florida teams because we’d usually go in the middle of the winter,” Kunitz laughed. “But this year we went out to California to start the winter, and I think that gave our team a good pivot point for the season.

“All of the teams out west have gotten a lot better. You’re building as a group on the road, eating team dinners and enjoying days off together, but you still have to battle those tough teams and that was an important time for us looking back.”

The word family is loosely thrown around in sports. Kunitz said his other favorite aspect of the NHL was being able to build tight connections with former teammates. For Kunitz, Pascal Dupuis and Craig Adams are two teammates he considers family.

“They are people I’ll stay in touch with my whole life,” Kunitz finished. “I don’t know if it was because we had kids around the same age or if we just bonded while living in the same area. But those are guys I look forward to staying in touch with. Eventually I’ll have a lot of years to do so.”

On paper, it looked like an ominous task. Back-to-back games for the Penguins against arguably their two biggest rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Washington Capitals, during the weekend of March 19-20.

A visit to the Wells Fargo Center against a Flyers squad the Penguins had beaten just once in the previous nine meetings between the teams, followed by a home matchup against a rested Capitals club that held a commanding 12-point lead in NHL’s overall standings.

By 8:50 p.m. on Sunday night, the Penguins owned a pair of victories.

Two convincing, statement wins.

The final tally for the weekend saw the Penguins outscore their rivals by a combined margin of 10-3, and outshoot them 66-35, numbers that amazingly do not tell the full story of just how dominant Pittsburgh played.

Head coach Mike Sullivan credited the Penguins’ emphasis on team speed as the top reason his players were able to dramatically tilt the ice for the better part of 120 minutes.

“This is something that we have tried to do since I have been here, try to define our identity as a team, what’s our competitive advantage, how do we win,” Sullivan said. “We think our core guys want to play a fast game.

“Speed in all of its forms: skating, team speed, puck movement.

Sure, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby paced the offense as usual, collecting four assists, while high-scoring blueliner Kris Letang added a goal and an assist to establish a career high with 55 points, but it was strength in numbers across the board that got the job done.

Of the 18 skaters the Penguins used, 14 tallied at least one point, and nine had multiple points.

Sitting atop the weekend scoring chart next to Crosby was defenseman Trevor Daley, whose four points included a goal in each game, possibly two of the prettiest goals any Penguins player has scored all season.

“Guys are going to find you when you get open,” Daley said. “I just tried to get open, then I closed my eyes and shot.”

Also stepping up was rookie Tom Kuhnhackl, who produced the first threepoint game (1+2) of his career against the Capitals, earning him the game’s No. 1 Star.

Lost in the offensive output put forth by the Penguins was the decision Sullivan and his staff made to start Marc-Andre Fleury in both games.

Thanks to 10 goals of support, Fleury didn’t have to be a brick wall, but he was his usual solid self, and that alone put the Penguins in a great position heading into the final 10 games of the regular season.

“I thought we played two really good teams in our division and we really took it to them,” Fleury said. “We were able to score some goals and we didn’t give them much. It was a solid weekend for sure.”

The March of the Penguins that featured eight wins in the team’s first 11 March games and resulted in a climb up the Metropolitan Division standings rather than the chase for a wildcard invitation to the playoffs didn’t just happen.

It was preceded by a transformation and a maturation, the results of the Penguins’ response to injury and inconsistency.

And it had been a while in coming.

The lineup employed to beat the Capitals, 6-2, on March 20 at CONSOL Energy Center differed drastically from the one the Penguins first put on ice this season on Oct. 8 in Dallas (only 10 players dressed for both games).

The style of play and the Penguins’ commitment to it were likewise dramatically different.

No wonder they were able to tie their longest winning streak of the season with a sixth consecutive triumph.

“Something that we’ve tried to do since I’ve been here is to define our identity and what we are as a team, what is our competitive, how do we win,” explained head coach Mike Sullivan, who took over on Dec. 12 and promptly lost his first four games. “We think our core guys want to play a fast game.

They’re good skaters, they can all move the puck, they can advance the puck [and] they see the ice well.

“Speed in all of its forms, whether it’s skating, team speed or puck movement, has to be our competitive advantage and that has to be the foundation of our identity. When we play that way and we don’t get deterred from any sort of tactics where we’re trying to play somebody else’s game, I think that’s when we’re at our best.”

The “deterred” part of the equation is as significant to the Penguins’ big picture as roster alterations that included bringing continued on page 155

the likes of defensemen Justin Schultz and Trevor Daley and winger Carl Hagelin aboard.

Because a distracted team isn’t a team can function at top efficiency.

But a team that’s able to stay the course and press forward no matter the distractions or challenges that arise during a game is a team that can achieve success and maintain it.

That win over Washington, a game that became chippy and combative and CARL

provided plenty of opportunities for the Penguins to veer off course, stood out as an example of how far the Penguins had come in terms of focus.

“I think it starts with our leadership, quite honestly,” Sullivan said. “It starts with our top guys.

It starts with our captain, Sid [Crosby], and it works down. Our pushback is through our play. What’s most important is between the whistles.

“Teams are going to play the way they’re going to play whatever their identities may be. We just have to be crystal clear on what ours is and what gives us the best opportunity to win games.

What I like is I think our team has really evolved as far as its resilience and its ability to not get deterred or distracted from our game. When we do

that we’re certainly at our best, we give our team the best chance to win.

“You can define toughness a lot of different ways. I strongly believe we have a tough team because we play through lots of circumstances and we don’t get deterred or distracted from our game and I think when we do that, we’re at our best.”

Sullivan used the words “conviction” and “determination” to describe how his team had responded to the Caps’ talent and tactics.

“It’s a compliment to the players,” Sullivan maintained.

And it’s a mindset that, when coupled with what the Penguins have begun to apply on the ice, can serve the team well in the playoffs.

In addition to extending a winning streak, the victory over the Capitals ran the Penguins’ records to 14-3-1 in their last 18 division games and to 15-3-2 in TREVOR their last 20 at CONSOL DALEY Energy Center.

That’s a significant enough sample size to instill and maintain belief.

“We’re playing really well,” center Matt Cullen said. “We like our game. We’re getting some really good goaltending, the D-men have been outstanding and I think the forwards have been just hunting pucks and working.

“I think the biggest thing for our team is everybody is committed to working every night and I think you’re seeing results from that.”

HOCKEY SCHOLAR NEIL ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL Bethel Park School District has committed to creating opportunities for students to develop 21st century technology skills.

As part of this commitment, the Penguins’ Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program was introduced to Mr. Rosi’s fifth grade class at Neil Armstrong Middle School.

“All of our students have some sort of familiar tie to the Penguins,so bringing this program into the classroom brought instant interest to the topics,” said Mr. Rosi.

Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of the game while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. MEET THE PENGUINS 2015

DRAFT CLASS DANIEL SPRONG

Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), has become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

DOMINIK SIMON

Forward • 5th round, 137th overall Simon has played his entire career in the Czech Republic League. He played the 2014-15 season for HC Plzen, a team owned by former Penguins player Martin Straka, and finished tied for third on the team with 30 points (18G-12A) in 52 games. continued on page 191

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games.

Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal.

He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.

FREDERICK TIFFELS

Forward • 6th round, 167th overall In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college. Tiffels is a big soccer fan and follows his hometown club, FC Koln. His favorite player on the team is Lukas Podolski.

NIKITA PAVLYCHEV

Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. For Pittsburgh Penguins games, all alcohol sales within the arena will conclude at the beginning of the third period. Individual concerts and events are determined on a show-by-show basis.

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance.

Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

AUTOMOTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AAA will have a “Puck Truck” at all Penguins home games. The “Puck Truck” is available to assist patrons that have trouble with their vehicles in CONSOL Energy Center lots only. Fans can call 1.800.AAA.HELP after the start of the third period.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

to inform guests of the situation and any instructions as applicable. All exits and emergency exits are posted with appropriate signage.

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: Peoples Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settler’s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.

Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region.
