QUICKER HAT THAN DAD Flames LW Matthew Tkachuk’s hat trick (3G-1A) highlighted Calgary’s 6-3 win over Vegas on Mar. 10. Tkachuk (21 years, 89 days old) needed 120 fewer days than his father Keith (21 years, 209 days) to score his first career hat trick. Matthew’s hat was the 80th tried on for size in the NHL this season. Players aged 21 or younger had accounted for 11 of those. 2018-19. That made this season the fifth in NHL history that included three Finnish-born 30-goal scorers and the first since 2005-06, when Anaheim’s Teemu Selanne (40G-50A in 80 games), Florida’s Olli Jokinen (38G-51A in 82 games) and Jere Lehtinen of Dallas (33G-19A in 80 games) all Finnished at least 30 times.

CALGARY COUP The win over the Golden Knights gave the Flames 91 points (42-20-7) through 69 games. The only other time in franchise history that Calgary registered at least 90 points before its 70th game was in 1988-89 (60 games), when it won the Stanley Cup.

HOME SWEET HOME Home wins by the Capitals (3-1 over the Jets) and Penguins (4-2 over the Bruins) on Mar. 10 should have surprised no one. The Caps’ victory improved their league-leading home-ice total since 2015-16 to 110. The Penguins kept pace with their 107th triumph at home, second only to Washington in the last four seasons.

30-SOMETHING FINNS Panthers C Aleksander Barkov (1G-1A) scored his 30th goal of the season in Florida’s 6-1 win over Detroit on Mar. 10. Barkov joined Colorado RW Mikko Rantanen (30G-56A) and Carolina C Sebastian Aho (30G-47A) as the third Finnish-born player to net 30 goals in 4

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ELITE TEAMS

HEADING TO

N ATI O N A LS BY MATTHEW UZAR

Five different Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams have paved their way into the USA Hockey National Championship by winning their respective divisions in the Mid-American District tournaments. With Districts being held just outside of Cleveland, the Penguins’ teams faired strongly in unfamiliar territory sending three of the boys’ and two of the girls’ teams to Nationals. The Girls 14U team was the first of the teams to punch their ticket into Nationals by defeating the Lady Barons 3-0 in the championship game. The team is ranked fourth nationally and finished with a 39-14-4 record. The Girls 16U team followed in the footsteps of the 14U team the day after, defeating the home team, Gilmour Academy, 6-1 in their clinching game. Both Penguins Elite Girls teams will travel to Irvine, CA to compete for the National Championships which will be held from Apr. 4 to Apr. 8. The Penguins Elite Boys 14U team took Districts head on, sweeping the competition and securing their way to the National Championships. The Boys Elite team found themselves matched

up against the Penguins Elite Black team in the clinching game, defeating the Penguins’ Black team 3-1. The 2004 team will defend home ice at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex for the National title. The 15U Boys team also had a strong showing in Districts powering their way into the championship game where they defeated the Ohio Blue Jackets 2-0. The 15U Elite team will head to Plymouth, MI to play in Nationals. The 16U team also went flawless in their run through Districts and defeated the Ohio Blue Jackets 4-1 in the championship game. The team will go on to compete in Nationals which will be held in Grand Rapids, MI. All games in their respective division will take place from Apr. 3 until Apr. 8. A PASSION

FOR ART AND HOCKEY

COLLIDE BY JASON SEIDLING

Since mid-February, rookie forward Zach Aston-Reese has been performing double duty for the Pittsburgh Penguins. At night, while usually occupying the left wing on a line with Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel, the hard-nosed AstonReese has literally laid his body on the line for his team. Some nights that includes throwing his 6-foot, 204-pound frame viciously into the opposition, or admirably stepping in front of 90-plus miles per hour slap shots while on the penalty kill. During the daylight hours, AstonReese has chosen a less pain-inducing route to assist the business side of the organization. Aston-Reese, who owns an undergraduate degree in graphic design from Northeastern, has spent his down time offering his design skills to the Penguins’ creative department. This weekend, Aston-Reese gets to showcase his talents when the cover he designed for the IceTime gameday program greets fans at PPG Paints Arena prior to Sunday night’s St. Patrick’s Day matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers. Before he began designing, AstonReese consulted a few Irish posters

online, then he Googled Irish fonts, to draw some authentic inspiration. Aston-Reese’s cover features team goal-scoring leader Jake Guentzel firing a shot on goal. Behind Guentzel, Aston-Reese made the main backdrop the official flag of Ireland. He added several Celtic patterns below Guentzel’s name and below his hockey stick. The finished product, which he estimated took him at least two hours to perfect over the course of several days, suits the simple style that Aston-Reese said he prefers when designing. “I was trying to stick with some Irish themes,” Aston-Reese said. “I was pretty happy with it. I was doing it on the road a bit, so the guys were in there with me — Willie (Garrett Wilson) and Jake — watching me make it. It was a fun experience. I haven’t designed much since I’ve been out of school, I’ve kind of been on a hiatus, so it was nice to get back using Adobe and programs like that.” Having Aston-Reese contribute a guest IceTime cover was the brainchild of Penguins’ graphic design manager Dave Scheponik. Usually, Scheponik and Jen Navari do the heavy lifting 22

designing the cover page for Erin Tirpak, who spearheads both the layout and design of IceTime. Knowing that Aston-Reese possessed a graphic design degree, Scheponik threw his big idea the player’s way in late January. It took maybe three seconds — tops — for an eager Aston-Reese to accept Scheponik’s invitation. A few days later, Aston-Reese and Scheponik sat down inside the Penguins’ locker room to go over the details of how the project would unfold, as several of Aston-Reese’s teammates, quite intrigued about the idea, listened in. “They kind of set the canvas up for me,” Aston-Reese said. “It was a matter of adding the picture and a few details — the player’s name and an Irish font. What it came down to for me was making a cool background.” If you have worked with Photoshop before, you know that the toughest part is cutting a player out from the background of an action shot. As Aston-Reese noted, “you need a steady hand” when performing this tedious task. Luckily for him, Scheponik and company eliminated this step by cutting out a handful of players for Aston-Reese to choose from: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Jake Guentzel and Olli Maatta. Jokingly, Aston-Reese noted a glaring omission among his options before he

started the project on Feb. 10 in Philadelphia during a Penguins’ road trip. “I was kind of upset none of the pictures were of myself, but that’s fine,” Aston-Reese told Pens Inside Scoop’s Michelle Crechiolo and PensTV’s Jon Otte, before telling them he was going with Guentzel “because he is my roommate.” Crechiolo and Otte joined Aston-Reese in Philadelphia to document the early stages of his cover design for an upcoming edition of In The Room. As Aston-Reese went to work, Crechiolo extracted the details of what led him to take up graphic design. Before declaring a major at Northeastern, Aston-Reese wanted to do something different than his friends, most of whom had chosen the business route. In the summer following 25

his freshman year, Aston-Reese took a few art classes while he remained on campus to train. He quickly realized that he was “really passionate about (art),” so he made it his major. At Northeastern, his favorite classes included drawing and painting courses. He particularly enjoyed a 3-D woodshop class where students used laser cutters and 3-D printers to create models. Another favorite was a photography class where he took neat-looking nighttime photos. One project that he was particularly proud of — something he mentioned on more than one occasion to Crechiolo — was a typography poster that included 30 different font terms. At first, his professor wasn’t very happy with it, but following a semester’s worth of revisions, that professor finally came around to it. “I’m pretty proud of that poster,” Aston-Reese said. “I would definitely print that out and put it on the wall.”

For his capstone project, Aston-Reese used InDesign to compile a book on the history of the NHL. Not only was it a subject Aston-Reese enjoyed, but he was able to learn a few tidbits along the way. “I learned about some of the teams that came in during different transition periods, and other teams that moved around a lot and stuff like that,” Aston-Reese said. “I learned that Pittsburgh had an actual penguin as a mascot, but he got pneumonia and died.” Looking ahead to the future, if Aston-Reese chooses to use his graphic design degree, he told Crechiolo that he would first have to go back to school to take additional classes because the Adobe design programs change so often. Considering the stellar effort he put forth on his St. Patrick’s Day IceTime cover, a few quick refresher courses will be all Zach Aston-Reese needs to succeed in the highly-competitive graphic design world.

Michelle Crechiolo from Pens Inside Scoop and Jon Otte of PensTV contributed to this story. To watch video from Zach Aston-Reese’s IceTime cover design, check out the final regular-season episode of In the Room, scheduled to run on AT&T SportsNet in early April.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS®

MARIO

LE M I EUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux is one of the greatest players in NHL history, with two Stanley Cups, six NHL scoring titles, three MVP awards, two Conn Smythe Trophies, a Calder Trophy, a Masterton Trophy – and an Olympic gold medal for good measure. Now, he’s also established himself as one of the league’s greatest owners. Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle led the Penguins to three Stanley Cups in a nine-year span between 2009 and 2017, giving Mario more Cups as an owner than he won as a player. Lemieux and Burkle organized a group of investors that bought the Penguins out of bankruptcy in 1999. The combination of Lemieux’s hockey acumen and Burkle’s business savvy made them a formidable front office tandem and led to a series of spectacular achievements both on and off the ice. The Penguins, during that time, have become one of the premier franchises in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice. That includes qualifying for the playoffs for 12 straight seasons – the longest current streak in the NHL – and reaching the Cup Final four times and the conference finals five times in the past 11 years. The Penguins entered the 2018-19 season having sold out every game for 11-plus seasons while setting high standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose

arena, which opened in August, 2010. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the top facilities in North America and has hosted such national events as the 2012, 2015 and 2018 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament opening rounds, the 2012 NHL Draft, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, the 2014 USA Gymnastics Championships and the 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup Finals. NCAA national championships in wrestling and women’s volleyball will be held here in 2019. Lemieux also helped to launch the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in nearby Cranberry, PA. Now in its fourth year of operation, the practice home of the Penguins is the first facility of its kind to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. As a player, “Le Magnifique” was a gifted 6-foot-4 centerman who dominated play for parts of three decades. Although he faced a numbing series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease, he retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player for the first time in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September 1999 and then returned to the ice on December 27, 2000 – becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. He also captained Team Canada to an Olympic gold medal in 2002. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation, which has raised more than $25 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, have raised four children and reside in Sewickley. 33

RON

BU RKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, hospitality, technology and distribution industries, is also a three-time Stanley Cup champion as co-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Burkle teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership duos in professional sports, winning three Cups from 2009-17. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. But he also helped create a winning mindset for the Penguins organization both on and off the ice. Although Burkle prefers to operate quietly and behind the scenes, Lemieux praises his immense role in the team’s success. “Ron is one of the main reasons we still have hockey in Pittsburgh,” Lemieux told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “If I was not able to buy the Penguins and have Ron as our top investor, I don’t think the Penguins would be here today. He’s a great guy and a very smart businessman. He loves Pittsburgh, he loves the Penguins. I think people should know that.” Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for 11-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports.

The Penguins have earned 12 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals five times in the past 11 years, in addition to the three Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Americold, Soho House, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a member of the Board of The Scripps Research Institute, the National Urban League and Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralphs/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, incuding the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVI D

MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the team’s new arena was opening in August, 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game where all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August, 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill – as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is a native of the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Beechview.

In 11 seasons as a senior executive with the Penguins, David Morehouse has seen the team win three Stanley Cups, make the Cup Finals four times and reach the conference finals five times. Though his expertise is on the team’s business side – especially branding and marketing – Morehouse’s greatest achievement has been creating a corporate culture that has driven the Penguins to consistent excellence both on and off the ice. “It’s no coincidence that we’ve enjoyed this kind of success with David Morehouse as our key senior executive,” said co-owner Ron Burkle. “We’ve obviously made a lot of great acquisitions on the player side, but one of the best acquisitions we’ve ever made was David himself.” The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during Morehouse’s tenure – selling out every game for 11-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. The Penguins again led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings in 2017-18. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in 36

JIM

RUTHERFORD EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Three-time Stanley Cup champion Jim Rutherford is in his fifth season as the executive vice president and general manager of Penguins. Highly-regarded by his peers as one of the top executives in the NHL, Rutherford’s tenure with the Penguins has included back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and ’17, four playoff appearances and the third-most wins (regular season and playoffs) among all NHL clubs in that span entering the 2018-19 campaign. Pittsburgh’s six-game defeat of the Nashville Predators in the 2017 Stanley Cup Final not only made the Penguins the NHL’s first repeat champion since 1998, but it allowed Rutherford to become just the seventh GM since the 1967 NHL Expansion to win three Stanley Cups. One year earlier, Rutherford became the first GM since ‘67 to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. As a reward for his quick, on-the-fly reshaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Pittsburgh’s roster didn’t require as much tinkering in 2016-17, but Rutherford once again added key pieces at the right time,

including bolstering his defense by trading for veteran Ron Hainsey near the deadline. Hainsey earned top-pair minutes in the absence of Kris Letang. Rutherford spent 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. At the junior hockey level, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft.

BI LL

GUERIN

ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his fifth season as assistant general manager of the Penguins. One of Guerin’s primary roles is serving as the general manager of the Penguins’ minor-league affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his first season in charge of WBS in 2017-18, Guerin helped the team improve its consecutive playoff streak to 16-straight years, the longest active run in the AHL. A two-time Stanley Cup champion as assistant GM of the Penguins (2016 and ’17), Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and

JASON

college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was integral during Pittsburgh’s ’09 title run. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

KARMANOS

ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive with Carolina from 1998-2013, serving various roles including vice president/ assistant general manager under Jim Rutherford. In addition to winning a Cup in 2006, Karmanos helped build the Hurricanes squad that was a Cup finalist in 2002. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury.

Jason Karmanos is in his second season as the Penguins’ assistant general manager after spending his first three seasons as the team’s vice president of hockey operations. As assistant GM, Karmanos continues to be involved in all facets of hockey operations decision-making, and he also oversees the Penguins’ amateur scouting staff. He played a vital role in helping the Penguins swing the complex three-team trade to acquire Derick Brassard on Feb. 23, 2018. A three-time Stanley Cup champion, Karmanos helped build the Carolina Hurricanes’ 2006 championship club in addition to his consecutive titles in Pittsburgh in 2016 and ‘17. 41

MIKE

S U LLIVAN HEAD COACH

Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WBS, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. A native of Marshfield, MA, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship.

Mike Sullivan begins his fourth season as head coach of the Penguins. His first three years produced back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and ’17 and a team-record-tying nine-straight playoff series victories. Heading into the 2018-19 campaign, Sullivan is already arguably the mostsuccessful coach in club history. Not only is he the only two-time Stanley Cup winner to coach the Penguins, but his nine playoff series victories are a team record, his 38 postseason wins are second-most and his 130 regular-season victories are fourth-most. By winning the Stanley Cup in his first two years behind the Penguins bench, Sullivan became the first American-born coach in NHL history to win multiple Cups, and he joined the legendary Toe Blake of the Montreal Canadiens as the only coaches to win the championship in each of their first two seasons with a team. Despite the burden of being the defending champs, Sullivan’s club finished the 2016-17 regular season with 50 wins and 111 points — the latter the second-most in the history of the franchise — good enough for the secondbest record in the entire league. Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the second-best record in the 43

SERGEI

GONCHAR ASSISTANT COACH

Sergei Gonchar enters his second season as an assistant coach for the Penguins, where he and Jacques Martin work closely with the team’s defensemen. Since moving in a coaching role, which began with a two-year stint as the Penguins’ defenseman development coach from 2015-17, Gonchar earned plenty of praise for his work developing young blueliners. Justin Schultz and Jamie Oleksiak are two defensemen whose game has progressed the most under Gonchar’s tutelage.

One of the top power-play quarterbacks of his era, Gonchar produced 811 career points in 20 NHL seasons, the most of any Russian-born defenseman. He ranks in the top-20 all-time among NHL defensemen in both games played and points. During his five-year run in Pittsburgh from 2005-10, Gonchar tallied 259 points (54G-205A). Gonchar is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, winning all three titles with Pittsburgh. He was an alternate captain on the Penguins’ ’09 team, and an executive in 2016 and ’17. Gonchar also helped the Penguins advance to the Cup Final in 2008.

JACQUES

MARTI N

ASSISTANT COACH

Jacques Martin enters his fourth season as a Penguins’ assistant coach in 2018-19. He is in charge of the Penguins’ penalty killing unit and he works closely with Sergei Gonchar presiding over the team’s defensemen. Martin led a defensive group that overcame numerous injury woes, including the season-ending loss of Kris Letang, to help the Penguins capture a secondstraight Stanley Cup in 2017, the second championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head

coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team. 44

RECCHI

ASSISTANT COACH

Mark Recchi is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Penguins. He works closely with the team’s forwards and the power-play unit. As the Penguins’ player development coach from 2014-17, Recchi worked with Pittsburgh’s prospects throughout the organization from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to the junior and college ranks. Two of the players Recchi worked with at WBS, Jake Guentzel and Carter Rowney, played huge roles in Pittsburgh’s 2017 Stanley Cup championship run. Recchi enjoyed a 22-year NHL playing

career that began with the Penguins in 1988-89 and wrapped up with the Boston Bruins in 2010-11. In that span, Recchi accumulated 577 goals and 1,533 points in 1,652 contests, numbers that earned him enshrinement in the Hockey Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2017. A seven-time NHL All-Star, Recchi won three Stanley Cup championships as a player: 1991 with Pittsburgh; 2006 as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes; and 2011 with Boston. He added his name to the Cup two more times as a Penguins executive in 2016 and ’17.

BU C KLEY

MIKE

GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Buckley is in his second season as the Penguins goaltending coach after spending the previous four seasons as Pittsburgh’s goaltending development coach. Buckley played a crucial role in Pittsburgh’s back-to-back Stanley Cup championship runs, serving as an eye in the sky and traveling with the club both years. His finest work thus far has been guiding the development of Matt Murray from top prospect to the first goalie in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup-clinching game twice as a rookie. Before Murray became a star at the NHL level, Buckley worked with him as a

first-year pro in 2014-15, when Murray was the AHL’s Rookie of the Year and Goaltender of the Year. In Buckley’s four seasons as goaltending development coach, the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins finished with the lowest goals-against average in the league three times. Following a four-year college career at UMass-Amherst that ended in 2000, Buckley played five seasons of professional hockey from 2000-05, including parts of three campaigns with the Mississippi Sea Wolves and Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL. 46

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP Applications for the 2019 Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Scholarship are now available for deserving seniors attending a Pittsburgh Public School or select high schools within Allegheny County. All eligible Allegheny County high schools must provide substantial aid to students for reduced-cost or free lunch programs per the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education Division of Food and Nutrition. Each scholarship is valued at $1,500 for the first year of the student’s college education, and an additional $1,000 is available for the student’s second year of college if a 3.0 GPA is maintained and a minimum of 24 credit hours

are earned. The scholarship was created in 1992 and has been presented annually to high school seniors for academic excellence, extracurricular school activities and community service. The student application and a complete list of eligible schools are available to download at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org Each August, before the students head off for college, the Penguins Foundation honors the scholarship recipients and their families at an Annual Scholar Luncheon at PPG Paints Arena. BOB JOHNSON MEMORIAL AND PENGUINS ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIPS The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation offer two hockeybased scholarships to deserving scholar athletes — the Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship and the Penguins Alumni Scholarship. Both scholarship applications for the 2018-19 school year are available on the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org. In 1992, an annual scholarship was created in memory of Bob Johnson, the Penguins late head coach who led the team to its first Stanley Cup Championship. Co-sponsored by the Penguins Booster Club, the $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a Western Pennsylvania high school senior for academic excellence, community

service and for providing leadership and sportsmanship as a member of their high school’s hockey team. To date, a total of 28 Penguins/Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarships have been awarded. The Penguins Alumni Association annually awards a $2,000 scholarship to a Western Pennsylvania high school senior who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, good citizenship, school and community involvement, and has shown an intense love for the game of hockey. Since 2005, the Penguins Alumni Association has awarded 13 scholarships to deserving student-athletes.

Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. PHIL

when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, CA, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

HOCKEY

ETIQUETTE 101 OUR GOAL? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen with these important reminders: 1.

DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stop inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this great idea!

2.

NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, obstructing the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!

3.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!

4.

PPG Paints Arena is a NON-SMOKING FACILITY; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

5.

It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking! HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE!

6.

Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — HAVE FUN! 129

Over the years, as the Penguins’ jerseys would change and the logo was modified, the club stayed with predominantly black and white jerseys — mixed in with a touch of gray in the late 1990s and two different shades of blue thirds, a light-blue throwback in 2008 and a dark-blue version in 2011. But the Penguins didn’t return to a predominantly yellow jersey until the 2017 Coors Light Stadium Series Game against the Philadelphia Flyers. For that game, a 4-2 victory at Heinz Field on Feb. 25, 2017, the Penguins wore “Pittsburgh Gold” jerseys for the first time since 1985. The Stadium Series jerseys featured a standalone skating Penguin minus the golden triangle

The Pittsburgh Penguins unveiled new third jerseys for the 2018-19 season, featuring a dynamic gold background with black sleeves and white and gold striping in early October. For long-time Penguins’ fans, the new sweaters were a blast from the past to the early 1980s when the Pens became one of the first teams in the NHL to introduce a third jersey. For three seasons from 1982-85, the Penguins wore gold alternate jerseys, complete with matching yellow helmets. When the jerseys were first debuted, they were only worn for Sunday home games. The final season for the original gold jerseys came in 1984-85 – Mario Lemieux’s rookie season. 134

new design incorporates elements from the popular 2017 Stadium Series uniform while acknowledging the heritage of gold jerseys worn by Mario Lemieux and the Penguins in the 1980s. As adidas noted in its press release announcing the third jerseys, the goal was to create a signature look for these new thirds, as the crest spotlights the standalone skating penguin on a singletoned gold sweater. Mixing the past with the present, the contrasting black sleeves are highlighted with white and

from the traditional Penguins’ logo. The sleek new design also featured two patches — one to commemorate the Stadium Series and another paying tribute to Pittsburgh’s heritage as the “City of Champions.” Pittsburgh wore yellow socks with a single black stripe that evening. Based upon the popularity of the yellow Stadium Series jerseys, the Penguins elected to go back to a mostly yellow sweater when they went about designing their current third jerseys. The 137

gold striping that are inspired from the Penguins’ 1984 jerseys, while the letters and numbering mirror the current home and away jerseys. Additional design details include the sleeve numbers being raised to the shoulder of the jersey to mimic the 1980s look. One difference in this year’s third jersey outfit is that the yellow socks will feature both a black and a white stripe. Just like they did at the 2017 Stadium Series Game, the Penguins will be wearing yellow helmets when they wear their third jerseys. Pittsburgh wore its new yellow third jerseys for the first time on Thursday, Nov. 15 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The team is scheduled to wear the jerseys 12 times in 2018-19 — all at PPG Paints Arena.

A 20-year-old Matt Cullen hopped over the boards and his skate blade hit the ice for the first glide of his NHL career. Cullen, a member of the Anaheim Ducks, was in Toronto’s historic Maple Leaf Gardens when he set up for a defensive zone faceoff. Standing opposite of him in the circle was future hockey Hall-of-Famer Mats Sundin. The puck dropped to the ice and Cullen lost the draw. The Maple Leafs used the win to get a scoring chance. After Anaheim cleared the puck, Ducks head coach Pierre Page called Cullen immediately back to the bench. “I remember my first shift. I lost [the faceoff] and they shot it on net and I got taken off the ice,” Cullen laughed. “It was a short shift, but I remember it like it was yesterday. It’s funny how fast it goes, but those moments are moments you never forget.” The game wasn’t yesterday. It was Oct. 28, 1997, over 22 years ago. But it marked the beginning of a journey that has culminated in a 21-year NHL 154

career, three Stanley Cup wins and — as of Pittsburgh’s 3-2 overtime win over Florida on Mar. 5 — the incredible milestone of 1,500 regular-season games played. “It’s a cool number,” Cullen said of reaching 1,500. “I think when I’m all done and have time to look back on it, I’ll be proud of it. It’s not easy to play in the game. It’s a young man’s game; it’s a fast game. To be able to play this long is an honor.” Before that game against the Panthers, the Penguins honored Cullen a number of different ways. It started when Cullen walked into the locker room before the game and saw that every jersey at every stall bore his name and number, with all of his teammates set to wear them during warmups. “It was my best warmup of the year,” Cullen joked. “That was pretty funny, though. A classy touch. I’ve never seen that. That was really cool.” Later, after the national anthem concluded, Cullen’s wife Bridget and their three sons — Brooks, Wyatt and Joey — joined him on the ice

for a pregame ceremony to honor the milestone. After a tribute video played on the board, the Penguins presented Cullen with a commemorative silver-plated hockey stick and a plaque celebrating his career. Then, to top it all off, Cullen was presented with a new Polaris utility vehicle that the players collectively purchased for their beloved teammate. “I didn’t really have expectations going into it, but it was pretty overwhelming, honestly,” Cullen said. “It was way more than I would ever deserve or expect. It really took me off guard. It just means a lot that everybody would go through all that trouble for me. It was pretty special.” The 42-year-old forward has made stops in eight NHL cities in his career: 155

Anaheim, Florida, Carolina (two stints), NY Rangers, Ottawa, Minnesota (two stints), Nashville and Pittsburgh (two stints). Two of those teams (Minnesota, Nashville) didn’t exist on the night Cullen made his NHL debut. Cullen’s 1,500 games played are the second-most by an American-born player and 20th all-time in the NHL (Cullen will likely pass Steve Yzerman, 1,514 for 19th, this season). He’s played in over 1,600 games when accounting for playoffs, not to mention those three Stanley Cups (two with Pittsburgh, one with Carolina). “The first time in the playoffs was pretty special, just getting there,” Cullen recalled. “The Stanley Cup runs are for

me what stands out the most. Those are the ultimate. To be able to go through those experiences, those are the things I’ll remember the most.” That, and the firsts. “The first game is always a huge one. The first goal is such a special memory,” said Cullen, who scored against Florida’s Kevin Weekes. “He became a good friend. I ended up playing with him in New York. I gave him a hard time about it for the whole season.” Cullen has watched the evolution of the game over the past two decades. “The speed of the game, the skill level of the game, it’s such a fun game to watch now,” Cullen said. “It’s [a young game], there are a lot of young guys

flying up and down the ice. It’s fun to be out here. It’s fun to be part of the game when it’s at such a high level.” Even as the game became younger and faster, Cullen managed to stick around. Throughout his career, Cullen has filled every role from a top-line scoring center with power play time to a fourthline checking center that specializes in killing penalties. It was his ability to adapt with his age that Cullen attributes for his longevity. “Being willing to accept different roles and fit in wherever you fit in,” he said. “Putting the ego aside and doing whatever you can to help the team, that’s a big part of sticking around and playing, making the most of whatever you’re given. “Being able to adapt has been something that’s allowed me to stick around.” That, and paying attention to his health as his 20s became his 30s became his 40s.

Being able to adapt has been something that’s allowed me to stick around. MATT CULLEN

“The physical side of things, taking care of your body, paying attention to nutrition and things like that have served me well,” he said. With the way Cullen practices selfcare, is 1,600 games in the future? Cullen replied with a hearty laugh and without hesitation: “Absolutely, not.” “This is the only thing I ever wanted to do my whole life,” he added. “It worked out pretty well.”

the exception to what had been the overtime rule. “It’s been a frustration point from my standpoint this year because I know we’re capable of better,” head coach Mike Sullivan acknowledged after the first overtime goal of Guentzel’s career had improved the Penguins’ record in three-on-three extra sessions to a still-disappointing 5-7. “When you think about the overtime opportunities that we’ve had that we haven’t maximized, we’d be in a much better position if we did. I just think it boils down to the details.” Those extra points the Penguins didn’t get in between regulation play

It seemed so natural, a play that was spectacular and yet almost matter-offact given the circumstances. Overtime against the Florida Panthers. Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel and Justin Schultz on the ice for the Penguins. A flip-pass to an open area by Crosby. A breakaway for Guentzel, who was able to beat Mike Matheson to the puck and then position his body in a manner that prevented Matheson from defending on the way to the net. A big-time finish by Guentzel. Elvis has just left the building. Except for the Penguins, that Crosbyto-Guentzel special on Mar. 5 was 169

and shootout opportunities loomed large in a stretch run in which every point was perceived as precious by the teams battling for one of the top three positions in the Metropolitan Division and/or one of the two wildcard invitations to the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins, given the array of talent they have at their disposal and all the open ice in which to operate in overtime, expect better from themselves, individually and collectively. Given the close juxtaposition of teams and the tight-checking nature of games in the regular season’s closing stages, the Penguins might yet have an opportunity to do better in threeon-three play before the concept goes away in the postseason. It’s absolutely something Sullivan has thought long and hard about all season. “For me, overtime is about puck possession, it’s about shot selection

and it’s about line changes,” he maintained. “If you’re locked in with those three things, you significantly increase your chances of having success. “I think we have a skill set that should do well in overtime. It’s hard to create a game plan from a defensive standpoint. It really boils down to man-on-man, there’s only three guys on the ice. It’s not like you can build in a support mechanism or create some sort of zone defense. At the end of the day when you don’t have the puck, in most situations it’s going to boil down to man-on-man, just defending the guy in front of you.” That’s the way it worked out for a change against Florida. But prior to that the Penguins had found themselves either not paying adequate attention to or not properly executing the absolutes of overtime on Mar. 1 at Buffalo (a 4-3 loss), on
