The Series vs. Hurricanes On April 2, the Penguins host the Carolina Hurricanes, a team they have beaten six straight times. Pittsburgh has never won seven straight games against the Carolina franchise, including the former Hartford Whalers. . . The Penguins have earned points in seven straight games against Carolina (6-0-1) since a 2-1 loss here on Dec. 19, 2015. . . During their current win streak against the Hurricanes, the Penguins have outscored them, 24-7. . . The season series began here on Dec. 28 with Pittsburgh earning a 3-2 victory, thanks to third-period goals from Chris Kunitz and Carl Hagelin. . . At Carolina on Jan. 20, Conor Sheary scored twice and Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin each had one goal and one assist in a 7-1 Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; win. . . Back in Raleigh on Feb. 21, Sidney Crosby broke a 1-1 tie late in the second period and Malkin scored in the third for a 3-1 win. . . Former Penguin Jordan Staal has one goal and five points in 16 career games against Pittsburgh. continued on page 6

The Series vs. Blue Jackets On April 4, the Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets close out their season series in what is also Pittsburgh’s last regular season home game. The Jackets have won two of the three previous games, the last two of which were decided after regulation. . . On Dec. 22 in Columbus, Scott Hartnell’s hat trick helped the Jackets to a 7-1 victory, with Crosby scoring the loan Penguins’ goal. . . In Pittsburgh on Feb. 3, Kessel’s goal at 3:15 of overtime, his second of the game, gave Pittsburgh a 4-3 victory. Kessel also had an assist in that game. . . Back in Columbus on Feb. 17, Brandon Dubinsky’s goal at 1:04 of overtime pushed the Jackets to a 2-1 win. Ian Cole had the lone Pittsburgh goal. . . Pittsburgh is 3-1-2 in its last six games against Columbus and is 6-2-0 in its last eight home games against them in the regular season. continued on page 8

The Penguins The Penguins have a chance to match the team record for home wins in one season (32), set in 1992-93 and matched in 1995-96. They had 29 after a 6-2 loss against Philadelphia here on March 26. . . After hosting Columbus, the Penguins finish the regular season with road games against the Devils, Maple Leafs and Rangers. . . Pittsburgh matched its team record by earning a playoff spot for the 11th straight season with a 3-1 win at Buffalo on March 21. The Penguins were also in the playoffs each season from 1991 to 2001. . . Cameron Gaunce recorded his first career multiple-point game with a goal and an assist in the Penguins’ 4-3 home shootout loss to the Islanders on March 24. . . Bryan Rust returned to the lineup that night after missing 20 games with an upper body injury. . . After facing the Flyers here, Nick Bonino had seven goals in his last 11 games. . . Pittsburgh hosted Chicago on March 29 and played in New York against the Rangers on March 31. . . Crosby was leading the NHL in average points-per-game at 1.21 through 75 games, bidding to finish the season leading the league for a seventh time. . . The Penguins were hopeful of upcoming returns to the lineup for injured players Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin, Ron Hainsey, Olli Maatta, Trevor Daley and Jake Guentzel. . . Pittsburgh was leading the NHL in shots-per-game at 34.2 through 74 games, which if maintained would be their highest figure in the last 29 seasons. . . The Penguins were also leading the NHL in goals-per-game at 3.42. If they stay there, it would mark the sixth time they’ve lead the NHL and third time in the last six seasons. 8

What is your earliest memory of Penguins hockey? I was six-years-old when my father took me to my first game. What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? My love for hockey and the opportunity for me to repay my father for all the years he would take me to games. Aside from on-ice action, what do you enjoy most about attending Penguins games? I truly enjoy going to the games with my father, especially with him getting older and his health not what it used to be. It gives us time to talk, make memories and talk to people we have become friends with over the years sitting in the same section. What lesser known Penguins player (past or present) has left a lasting impression on you? What did he do to make that impression? Ron Duguay. I remember seeing him without a helmet and thinking, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sure he has great hair but he must be nuts to not wear a helmet when the pucks are flyingâ&#x20AC;?.

What is the most unique keepsake in your personal collection of Penguins memorabilia? I still have the original Thrift Drug Mario Lemieux growth chart poster from his first year playing. It hangs in our game room. I also have an autographed Marc-Andre Fleury jersey. What non-Penguins player do you enjoy seeing on PPG Paints Arena ice? Anze Kopitar What is your favorite memory from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff run? Beating the Washington Capitals. In your eyes, what makes the Pittsburgh Penguins, or hockey in general, great? The sport of hockey is one of the toughest, most action packed sports. The players are so conditioned, tough and yet graceful. It’s a sport you don’t want to look away from because amazing things happen all the time. And with this Pittsburgh Penguins team it happens all the time. The resiliency, emotional/mental toughness and determination they show can’t compare to any other sport out there. Hockey is simply the greatest sport. 15

OT HERO: Calgary C Sean Monahan’s goal in overtime pushed the Flames past the Blues, 3-2, on March 25. The win was Calgary’s 14th in its last 18 games (14-3-1). The OT goal was the seventh of Monahan’s career in the regular season, one more than Jarome Iginla managed (six) for the most in franchise history.

Sabres C Jack Eichel’s three-point effort (2+1) in Buffalo’s 5-2 victory over Toronto on March 25 pushed Eichel’s season total to 53 points in 54 games. TB

North Dakota right wing Brock Boeser, 20, made his jump to the NHL as quickly as possible. He also made it memorable. Boeser, selected 23rd overall by Vancouver in 2015, had his sophomore season at North Dakota come to an end via a 4-3 loss to Boston University in doubleovertime on March 24 in Fargo in the NCAA Tournament. From there, Boeser signed with the Canucks, suited up the following night in Minnesota (he’s a native of Burnsville), started at right wing and scored a goal in Vancouver’s 4-2 victory).

Arizona on March 25 was his 30th of the season. Ovechkin became the third player in NHL history to score at least 30 goals in each of his first 12 NHL seasons, joining Mike Gartner (15) and Wayne Gretzky (13) in that exclusive club.

MINNESOTA’S IN AGAIN:

Despite losing to the Canucks on March 25, the Wild clinched their fifth-consecutive trip to the postseason.

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. RON BURKLE Co-Owner

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager

Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager

Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN Assistant General Manager

Bill Guerin capped his second season as the Penguins assistant general manager by earning the first Stanley Cup championship of his executive career in 2015-16. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects, including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the 2016 championship run. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

JASON KARMANOS Vice President Of Hockey Operations

Jason Karmanos begins his third season as the Penguins vice president of hockey operations having won the Stanley Cup for the second time in his executive career, after originally winning a championship with Carolina in 2006. Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations as one of the leaders in the Penguins’ implementation of advance statistics and analysis. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury.

MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach

Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach

Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach

Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES Goaltending Coach Mike Bales has established himself as one of the NHL’s top goaltending coaches during his first three seasons with the team. During the Penguins’ 2016 Stanley Cup championship drive, Pittsburgh used three goaltenders who thrived under his tutelage, including rookie Matt Murray, whose 15 playoff wins equaled the NHL rookie record. Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. TRAVIS WILLIAMS Chief Operating Officer Travis Williams is in his ninth season as a senior executive with the Penguins, currently serving as Chief Operating Officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/ General Counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the new arena — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams had been a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. Terry Kalna is in his second season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. A MEMORABLE ONE Jason Seidling Realistically, the only way the 2016-17 season could top last year’s amazing ride would be if the Penguins found a way to capture a secondstraight Stanley Cup. We won’t know how that task will turn out until later, hopefully much later, this spring. In the meantime, we know this: This year’s 50th anniversary campaign has been nothing shy of a rousing success for the Penguins and you, their amazing fans. As crazy as it is to fathom, this year marked the Penguins’ first full season under head coach Mike Sullivan. Thanks to a high-powered offense paced by NHL goal-scoring leader Sidney Crosby, with help from running mates Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel, Sullivan has the Penguins playing the most exciting brand of hockey in the league. Pittsburgh’s offensive exploits have been especially on display for fans at PPG Paints Arena, where the Penguins have spent the year not only chasing the club record of 32 home wins, but also tickling the twine at a rate unseen in the NHL in about 10 years. Heading into a marquee matchup against Chicago last Wednesday, the Penguins averaged 3.89 goals per game at home, which ranked third among all NHL teams in the shootout era (since 2005-06). Pittsburgh was also leading the league in overall goals per game at 3.40, a huge reason why the Penguins were threatening for the Presidents’ Trophy as the NHL’s top team despite a rash of injuries late in the year that moved the Penguins into the top-10 in the league in man-games lost. continued on page 66

Crosby has been the catalyst for the team’s success, as his 42 goals as of March 27 represented the second-highest single-season mark of his career, while his 1.19 points-per-game average also topped the league. When healthy, Malkin has produced at a similar rate, allowing the duo to combine for the second-highest single-season goal total they’ve recorded since joining forces. At this point, everyone from themselves to the fans to the media expects, or takes for granted even, that the dynamic duo will put up video game numbers, but what has helped keep the Penguins among the league’s elite are the breakout performers. Conor Sheary and Justin Schultz served in key capacities during Pittsburgh’s championship last year. This year, they went from playing cameo roles to taking on leading parts. Skating as Crosby’s preferred running mate, Sheary hit both the 20-goal and 50-point marks for the first time, with his numbers making him one of the top wingers in hockey. Stepping into the huge void created during Kris Letang’s injury absences, Schultz went from Edmonton castaway to finally fulfilling the promise everyone expected from him coming out of college. Schultz needed just two points entering the Chicago game to become the 13th defenseman in club history to hit 50 in a single season. We could keep going down the list, as an 11th-straight playoff berth could not have been clinched without help from a variety of sources. Instead, the final doses of credit must be handed out to you, the fans. Whether it’s been here at PPG Paints Arena or Heinz Field for the Stadium Series game or any visiting building on the road, it’s you, the fans, the entire Penguins Nation, that gives the team the support it needs to navigate through the rigorous season. Although we celebrate you during this final homestand, let’s make this celebration the beginning of our ultimate journey, one that hopefully ends with another party at The Point.

PENGUINS CUP AND PENNSYLVANIA CUP

CHAMPIONS CROWNED

The PIHL wrapped up its season as the Penguins Cup and Pennsylvania Cup Champions were crowned. The playoffs provided no shortage of drama as undefeated seasons, Cinderella stories, historic moments, and overtime action came to fruition. In AAA action, a Cinderella run by PIHL #6 Seed Peters Township was completed as they defeated the Flyers Cup Champions, Holy Ghost Prep, by a score of 2-1 to capture the State Championship. The Indians also knocked off top seeded Central Catholic by a score of 5-2 in the Penguins Cup Championship and defeated third seed Canon MacMillan and second seed North Allegheny in the first two rounds. Goaltending led the way for the Indians throughout the playoffs as goaltender Alex Wilbert started in all four games and stopped 108 of the 112 shots he faced for a remarkable .964 save percentage. The Plum Mustang’s celebrated their first Penguins Cup Title since 1998 as they defeated Latrobe in the AA championship game 6-1. Plum ended the regular season leading the league in goals scored with 117. Their goal-scoring trend continued into the PIHL playoffs as Plum scored 16 goals in three games to capture the PIHL AA title. However, Plum’s run came to an end against Downingtown East in the State Championship Game by a final score of 3-1. Franklin Regional captured its second straight Class A Penguins Cup Championship by defeating Indiana 6-1. It was also a historic night for the PIHL as Indiana sophomore goalie Madison Barker became the first ever female goaltender to start a PIHL Penguins Cup championship game. Franklin Regional went on to play Bayard Rustin in the Pennsylvania Cup finals for the second consecutive year. After a back-and-forth game, the championship was decided in overtime with Bayard Rustin winning its fourth consecutive state championship 2-1. Top-seeded Meadville took home the D2 championship and finished their undefeated season. Meadville topped Carrick 2-1 in overtime off of a turnover to take home the win in dramatic fashion. It was the first title for Meadville since 2003 when the Bulldogs were still in Class AAA and the win was Meadville’s head coach Jamie Plunkett’s ninth Penguins Cup championship win. Plunkett also received his 1,000th career win earlier this season. Congratulations to all the players and coaches for another great season.

In soccer, it’s called a “golazo,” a spectacular tally. But Sidney Crosby seemed unimpressed by his one-handed backhand flip that opened the scoring in the Penguins’ 3-1 win at Buffalo on March 21. “It wasn’t much, just reacting,” Crosby said. “It’s rare. It worked out. It was a fun one to score.” Crosby’s coach and teammates chimed in more effusively: Coach Mike Sullivan: “It was a goal-scorer’s goal by an elite player. The first period wasn’t our best. When Sid scored, it gave the team a boost. We were much better after.” Goaltender Matt Murray: “That’s a world-class play. He’s one of the only guys that can make that play. It’s pretty special to watch.” Winger Conor Sheary: “That’s pretty special. Not many guys can do that. To lift the puck on the backhand with one hand is pretty incredible.” Center Nick Bonino: “It’s the play that everyone screws around doing in practice, and he does it in a game. The sea parted for him there, and he turned it on. He does some pretty amazing things.” The goal was Crosby’s 41st of the season. After playing 67 games, Crosby had 41 goals and 40 assists. He led the NHL in goals, ranked second in points and was at the forefront of the MVP discussion. More important, the captain helped the Penguins navigate an injuryplagued course that saw them battling for first place in the Metropolitan Division (and overall) despite missing over a third of their regular roster some nights. Among those stricken were key cogs like Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin. The goal at Buffalo was a microcosm of Crosby’s brilliance. With the Penguins on the power play, Crosby took the puck in his own end and barreled down the middle of the ice. He split two Sabres, then two more Sabres before placing a one-handed backhand over the glove of Buffalo goaltender Robin Lehner with 8.2 seconds left in the first period. “I think most goalies in the league are going to read he’s going to pull that back to his forehand,” Lehner said. “Probably one or maybe two guys in the league can score a goal like that.” continued on page 79

The game at Buffalo was a full night for Crosby: Besides netting in amazing fashion, he also lost some teeth thanks to a high stick. Crosby didn’t see the dental damage as a big deal, either: “Those teeth, I lost getting hit with a puck a few years ago. It just happened again.” Sullivan put Crosby’s wonder goal and success in perspective: “I don’t think anything he does at this point surprises us. We marvel at what he does night in and night out. He’s an elite player. The type of plays he makes on a nightly basis helps our team stay competitive, especially under the circumstances of where we are right now. “I don’t know that I’ve ever been around a more driven athlete than Sid. He just has an insatiable appetite for the game, and to be the best. “His work ethic is second to none. He sets the standard. Everybody sees how talented a player he is. All of that is obvious.
