CONSOLATION PRIZES:

The Red Wings let two precious points get away when they were beaten by the Penguins, 7-2, on March 26 but the game was still memorable for Detroit on a couple of individual levels. C Pavel Datsyuk registered his 600th assist and joined Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman and Alex Delvecchio as the only players to score 300 goals and produce 600 assists with Detroit. Goaltender Jimmy Howard moved into a tie for 13th place with Garth Snow for games played by an American netminder (368).

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Sabres had a record of 31-34-10 through 75 games but they also had three players under the age of 25 with at least 20 goals — C Jack Eichel (23), LW Evander Kane (21) and C Sam Reinhart (20).

FLYING WITH COUTURIER:

Philadelphia’s 36-25-13 record through 74 games included a mark of 30-15-9 when C Sean Couturier was in the lineup and a showing of 5-9-4 when Couturier didn’t dress for a game.

EFFECTIVE AT BOTH ENDS:

The Capitals’ 53-16-5 record through 74 games featured 43 goals from LW Alex Ovechkin and 45 wins for G Braden Holtby. That made Ovechkin and Holtby the eighth set of teammates in NHL history with at least 43 goals and 43 wins in a season and the first such duo since Evgeni Nabokov and Patrick Marleau for San Jose in 2009-10 (Nabokov 44 wins, Marleau 44 goals).

HELPING HANDS IN NASHVILLE:

Predators D Roman Josi had three assists in a 5-1 win on March 26 against Columbus, which set the Nashville record for assists in a season by a defenseman with 44. Josi eclipsed the 42 assists recorded by Kimmo Timonen in 2006-07. The three helpers pushed Josi’s points total to a career-high 56 (12+44), which tied the franchise record for most points in a season by a defenseman (Shea Weber, 2013-14).

THE SERIES [VS] FLYERS

Tonight the Penguins play the final home game of their 2015-16 regular season, hosting the Philadelphia Flyers for the first of two games against their cross-state rivals in seven days. The Penguins close out their regular season April 9 in Philadelphia. . . Pittsburgh has won both previous games against the Flyers this season, a 4-3 home win on Jan. 21 and a 4-1 road win on March 19. . . In the home victory, Phil Kessel scored twice and Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist to help erase an early 2-0 Flyers’ lead and snap an eight-game losing streak against Philadelphia (0-6-2). . . In the road victory, Crosby and Nick Bonino had two assists each as the Penguins scored three times in the second period to nullify an early Flyers’ lead. Philadelphia had 17 shots in that game, the fewest the Penguins have ever allowed the Flyers in Philadelphia . . . The latter victory also marked the first time in five games Pittsburgh blanked the Philadelphia power play. . . The Flyers have scored first in eight of the last 13 games against the Penguins. . . Pittsburgh had lost five straight home games to Philadelphia before the January victory. The Penguins haven’t won consecutive home games against the Flyers since a five-game home win streak against them ended on Nov. 13, 2008. . . Crosby has goals in two continued on page 14

Among active players with at least 20 points against Pittsburgh, the Flyers’ Jake Voracek has the fourth-highest points-pergame average (1.07) while teammate Claude Giroux is seventh (1.00). . . PIttsburgh is 95-146-34 all-time against the Flyers, including 61-54-23 here at home.

THE PENGUINS

The Penguins moved to within three points of the second-place New York Rangers in the Metropolitan Division on Easter Sunday with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Crosby’s goal at 4:30 was his eighth career overtime goal and gave Pittsburgh a third straight victory over the Rangers. . . At that point, the Penguins had won eight of their last nine games and five straight on the road, matching their longest road winning streak since taking seven straight Nov. 6–Dec. 11, 2010. . . During a 7-2 win in Detroit on March 26, the largest margin of victory ever for the Penguins in Detroit, both Kessel and Bonino had their first five-point games in the NHL. The Penguins entered their March 29 home game against Buffalo with a 34-0-0 record when leading after two periods, the best in franchise history. . . The Penguins play in Ottawa on Tuesday and in Washington on Thursday before finishing the season in Philadelphia on Saturday. . . Pittsburgh has lost both of its last two regular season home finales, falling to Ottawa on April 13, 2014 (2-3 SO) and to the New York Islanders last April 10 (1-3). . . Crosby was third in NHL scoring with 78 points through March 27 and trailed No. 2 Jamie Benn of Dallas by five points with seven games to play. . . Fleury was on pace to play at least 60 games for the eighth time in his career. . . Ian Cole had been minus in just three of his last 26 games heading into that meeting with Buffalo.

The U15 National Invitational Tournament was hosted at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry from March 17â&#x20AC;&#x201C;20. Eight teams competed in the National Tournament which included the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, Amherst Knights, Milwaukee Jr. Admirals, Washington Little Caps, Los Angeles Jr. Kings, New Jersey Rockets, Esmark Stars, and the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes. These respective teams played a round-robin tournament over the weekend for a chance to be crowned the U15 National Champions. The U15 National Invitational Tournament proved to be a very intense tournament with highly skilled teams battling for the championship title. In the end, the Los Angeles Jr. Kings proved to be the dominant hockey club. In the championship game against the Amherst Knights, the Knights only cracked the Kings on their multiple powerplay opportunities with two goals scored on seven attempts. Brett Macnicoll, for the Los Angeles Jr. Kings recorded two goals and an assist in a 6-2 win over the Knights, and led the team to the U15 National Championship victory. There also was a RapidShot Hockey Training Tournament for U15 hockey players who were in town for the National Tournament. The off-ice RapidShot hockey training system at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex is the only professional shooting system in the world that measures accuracy, shot speed, and reaction time. Clay Potochny, a forward for the U15 Penguins Elite hockey club, accumulated the highest score in the RapidShot Tournament and received an autographed Evgeni Malkin hockey jersey. Thank you to all of the teams who participated in the tournament, and congratulations to the Los Angeles Jr. Kings on becoming the U15 National Champions!

Bryan Rust’s speed creates lots of opportunities. But, for a while, he had trouble cashing them in: One goal in 24 games going into the Penguins’ home game against Washington on March 20. Oh, and Rust got stopped on a breakaway the day before at Philadelphia. No matter. Rust buried an early chance in that game against the Capitals, netting a short one-on-one against Washington netminder Braden Holtby at 8:33 of the first period. Cue a sigh of relief. Cue a 6-2 Penguins victory. “I’ve been getting quite a few scoring chances as of late, so it’s nice to see one of those go in,” Rust said. “[Ian] Cole made a good rush up the ice, made a really good pass to Tommy Kuhnhackl, and he made a great spin-a-rama pass right on my tape. “Holtby, I think, was expecting me to shoot, and I made a little deke and was able to beat him to the far post.” The victory was the Penguins’ sixth in a row and gave them two wins in two days, no easy feat in today’s high-tempo NHL. The Penguins had won at Philadelphia the day before, 4-1. “That’s huge for us, especially because we haven’t been too great in back-to-back games over the recent past,” said Rust, 23. “It’s nice to have some success in that area, especially against such a great team like Washington. “The coaches have been preaching to us about getting in a bit better shape. That’s something we’ve been doing, and it showed up in that game.” Rust, a Michigan native and University of Notre Dame product, had four goals and six assists in his first 39 games this campaign. He is considered a rookie by the NHL definition, having played just 14 NHL games previously (all last season). Rust is part of what has become an effective third line for the Penguins: Rust plays right wing, 24-year-old Kuhnhackl mans the left, and 39-year-old Matt Cullen centers. Rust sees Cullen as the line’s glue. “He’s great in the middle,” Rust said of Cullen. “He’s a leader, and he plays both ends of the rink. That gives us chances to make a few more plays. “He’s really vocal with us. He tells us what we’re doing right, and what we’re doing wrong, and what we can do better. He sees and thinks the game so well.” continued on page 31

Rust is an integral part of perhaps the Penguins’ biggest strength: Speed. “[Speed] definitely gives us a chance to win every game,” Rust said. “That’s something we’ve been trying to build on. Play with speed. Play with pace.” Playing 60 minutes is a big factor, too. The Penguins took a 2-0 lead against Washington on March 20, but the Capitals rallied to forge a 2-2 tie. But Kuhnhackl tallied just 42 seconds later to make it 3-2. The Penguins again had the momentum, and a lead they never lost. “That was huge,” Rust said. “We played in Washington on [March 1] and gave up a 2-0 lead. They ended up winning the game, 3-2. So to grab that lead back so quickly was huge for us, and gave us a whole bunch of momentum. “It’s a 60-minute game. There are going to be ups and down. We just try to stay even keel.” Rust signed a two-year contract extension on March 14. He was understandably elated. “It shows that my hard work has paid off a little bit,” said the 5-foot-11, 192-pounder. “It’s really nice for a player like me, being up and down [between the NHL and Penguins’ minor-league affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton] so much the past couple years. It shows that management has confidence in me moving forward to play and contribute at the NHL level.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

JASON BOTTERILL ASSOCIATE GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his second season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WB/S Penguins have made the playoffs all six years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 39, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. MIKE SULLIVAN HEAD COACH

Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Assistant coach Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization. In his current role, he oversees the club’s defensemen and its penalty killing unit. Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams was a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses. A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder. Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond. Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

As the Penguins returned to the locker room following their morning skate on March 17, they were surprised with a visit from USGA Museum historian Mike Trostel — who brought along one of golf’s most illustrious pieces of hardware. There is reason behind the visit, of course. This summer, Oakmont Country Club is hosting the U.S. Open for the ninth time. And before the big event, the Penguins had a chance to hold and take pictures with the tournament’s trophy. “It’s quite an opportunity,” Brian Dumoulin said. “It’s really cool to look at the names of the people who won and talk a little golf. Now that the weather is getting nice, it’s getting into the golf mood.” Most of the Penguins said they play, but few recognized themselves as good golfers. Bryan Rust is one of the exceptions, finding time in the offseason to hit the course a lot. “It’s pretty much my entire summer,” Rust said. “It’s just me doing my off-ice workouts in the morning and then I try to go to the range or play in the afternoon. It’s definitely not a bad routine.” Players were given black and gold U.S. Open Oakmont hats and were invited to the tournament June 13-19. “I spoke with Sidney Crosby and Phil Kessel, who are big golfers,” Trostel said. “It sounds like a lot of them are going to be at Oakmont this year. We gave them some hats with the Oakmont logo. It should be really fun this year. It would be great to have the Penguins out at Oakmont. “There have been a lot of really great championships here,” Trostel finished. “I’m looking forward to another one in 2016.”

THE UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX

IS NOW OPEN

On August 14th, the Pittsburgh Penguins and UPMC opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art practice and medical facility. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry serves as the official practice home of the Penguins, and is the first medical facility in the country to conduct elite sports medicine research focusing on hockey-related training, rehab and injury prevention. The 185,000-square foot facility includes 54,000 square feet of clinical space, offering expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy and on-site MRI and x-ray imaging. The complex features two sheets of ice and the Penguins have a locker room and weight room similar to those at CONSOL Energy Center as well as other NHL-style facilities for coaches and players. The two sheets of ice are home to the Penguins Elite youth hockey program in addition to amateur and high school games, adult hockey leagues and instructional camps and clinics. The facility also offers public skating and figure skating and will host community events.

Gary Roberts, the former NHL star who played parts of two seasons with the Penguins, oversees the philosophy and off-ice training regimen at the facilityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sports Performance Center. He also consults with full-time UPMC staff to create fitness programs that can benefit players at all levels of hockey. Another former NHL player, Matt Herr, serves as executive director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. An outstanding two-sport athlete at the University of Michigan, Herr was drafted by professional teams in both hockey (Washington Capitals) and baseball (Atlanta Braves). He played 58 NHL games with Washington, Florida and Boston and worked in both prep school hockey and as a regional manager for USA Hockey when his playing days were over. Herr oversees business and hockey operations at the complex and will work with UPMC Sports Medicine and the Sports Performance Center to design an integrated development model for hockey. The sports medicine clinic includes 24 private patient rooms and a physical therapy gym overlooking the Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; practice rink. There also is a dedicated sports performance space including a sprinting track and batting cages.

PENGUINS DEVELOPING AMATEUR

HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the Sports Director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. As patrons entered CONSOL Energy Center on March 22, they were greeted by a flapper girl in the elevator who told them the password to enter the speakeasy. Guests then rode down to the first floor of the building and stepped into a curtained off hallway illuminated by a string of lights. After passing a black 1924 T-model truck and a suited-up Iceburgh, they arrived at a door guarded by a gangster demanding for the password. The magic words were “Mario sent me.” This was the grand entrance to the Penguins’ second annual Aces & Ice Casino Night presented by Trib Total Media. The theme of the event was Roaring Twenties, and over 300 fans had the opportunity to sit and be dealt a few hands by their favorite hockey players. “Everyone planning the event got involved in it and started coming up with ideas,” explained Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “The 1924 T-model truck outside, the guy at the door you have to give him the password to get in. Just a lot of fun.” Stepping into the arena was like stepping straight out of a time machine. The bowl was transformed into a casino, and everyone at the event looked incredible. Women were adorned in sequins, continued on page 131

feathers, fringe and headbands while the men looked as dapper as could be. The guests did an amazing job at looking the part, but everyone in attendance could agree that the players stole the show. All of the Penguins wore black and white pinstripe pants, black button-up shirts, white suspenders, fedoras with a white accent and feathers, black and white wing-tipped shoes and to top it off, they had wallet chains. “I have to tell you, I love it. The players looked great,” David Sedelmeier of the Talent Network said. “It added to the ambience.” Aces & Ice replaced the Penguins’ former charity gala dinner — known as Skates & Plates, which they had been doing since 1986 — as the team’s signature event last season. Over those 30 years, the team’s annual benefit has raised over $6 million. All proceeds from the evening benefitted the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the Mario Lemieux Foundation and the Western PA Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “The goal for the Penguins every time they’re on the ice is very clear, but when it comes to their teaming up tonight and in the past, it’s really an important goal,” said Mary Pat Joseph, Executive Director at the Western PA Chapter of Cystic Fibrosis. “It’s a different kind of goal, but it’s a life-saving goal. And it really is a bottom-line goal to help our foundation and continue to add tomorrows for those in our Cystic Fibrosis community. They’ve made such an impact.” continued on page 132

Out on the floor, some of the guys were taking the games a bit less serious than others. Both Chris Kunitz and Ian Cole were playing by their own rules at their tables. They would peek at the cards before playing them, so they could wait until they found one that put them over 21 so the fans would win. The crowd was loving it. One of the guests even said, “It’s a miracle!” while laughing hysterically. “It’s a fun event,” Kunitz said. “It takes everyone out of that comfort element or a stuffy atmosphere, so you just kind of interact with people. It wasn’t too serious or too formal in sitting down I think. It was a great event for us to be able to open up and meet some of the people that like to support the Penguins.” Not only was this Justin Schultz’s first charity event with the team, it was actually the former Oiler’s first-ever experience with such an evening. “I’ve never even heard of teams doing something like this, but it’s awesome,” Schultz said. “I know all the players are having a blast, so it’s definitely something I’m looking forward to doing again.” Schultz was enjoying himself for a number of reasons. “I’ve had all ladies, so it’s been awesome,” Schultz joked. “My table’s been the best, I think. I haven’t had one guy sit down here, so it’s good.” Some of the guys decided to opt out of dealing and try their luck at a few games instead. Sidney Crosby spent a big chunk of the night seated at Brian Dumoulin’s table, and it was an incredible experience for the fans next to him. “To be here and meet some of the fans face-to-face, it’s great,” Crosby said. “We’re not serving them this time, so I think we’re a lot better at doing this, and it seems to be a good time for everybody. We’re enjoying ourselves here.”

Kris Letang was gassed. And for good reason. For the first 3:32 minutes of the overtime period on Sunday at Madison Square Garden, only three players remained on the ice throughout. Two of them were the fairly stationary goaltenders manning their respective cages, but the other, Letang, had just used up every ounce of energy in his body on a day the Penguins were playing back-toback games versus opponents that were hungry to grab points and improve playoff positioning, much like these Penguins were. Before the final moments of overtime, head coach Mike Sullivan called a timeout — then it was time for Letang to continue working his magic. As long as it took Letang to catch his breath during the timeout, it took less time for him and Sidney Crosby to connect for the gamewinning goal and secure the two-point, one-goal win over New York. For this 28-year old Norris Trophy candidate, it was just another day at the office. “I didn’t try [to play the entire overtime],” Letang said jokingly in the locker room a mere minutes later. “It just happened to be like that. Coach took the timeout so I could breathe a little bit [laughs]. It was good.” continued on page 144

The win capped off a 2-0 weekend, and followed a 7-2 drubbing of Detroit the day before which saw Phil Kessel and Nick Bonino each pick up their first career five-point games. “What I love about our team is we’ve gotten down in games, but we don’t get rattled,” head coach Mike Sullivan said following the win over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. “We just keep playing. This team has grown so much over the last three months where we don’t let the different ebbs and flows of the game affect us. I thought the overtime was a perfect example, where we don’t score on the 4-on-3. “ Sullivan’s key messages on the ice of speed and a quick transition game from defense to offense have sparked Pittsburgh’s late season success. And without Letang as his anchor on defense, it’s hard to imagine Pittsburgh having an equal amount of success that it has seen in the month of March. As of March 28, Pittsburgh’s 10 wins and 20 points in March paced all NHL teams in both categories. For Sullivan, it’s all about playing with an identity. And that is something he sees his players doing better now than at any previous point since he took over. “What I really like about our group is that we don’t let it affect us, we just keep playing,” Sullivan said. “And I think that has become part of the identity of this group of players right now, and I think it is really helping us become a difficult team to play against.”

He left Robert Morris as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 156 career points and after setting the school’s single-season scoring record with 55 points in 2015-16 (25+30, including an NCAA-leading eight shorthanded goals, four of which were scored in an NCAA-record four consecutive games). Winger Brandon Denham (Manitoba Moose/Winnipeg) and defenseman Tyson Wilson (Manitoba) joined Lynch in beginning their professional careers in the AHL, the first time in Robert Morris’ 12-year, NCAA Division I history that more than player has jumped from college to professional hockey at the AHL level. Six Robert Morris players turned pro in the ECHL — winger Matt Cope (Norfolk), winger David Friedmann (Ft. Wayne), center Greg Gibson (Florida), defenseman Chase Golightly (Florida), defenseman Evan Moore (Elmira) and goaltender Terry Shafer (Indianapolis). Robert Morris tied the program record set last season with 24 victories this season (24-11-4). Penn State set a school record with 21 victories in (21-13-4) in 2015-16, the resurrected program’s third season in the Big Ten and fourth in Division I. Defenseman Luke Juha (Bridgeport), goaltender Eamon McAdam (a third-round pick of the Islanders in 2013/Bridgeport) and winger Eric Scheid (Portland) all wound up in the AHL after the Nittany Lions were eliminated by Michigan, 7-2, in the Big Ten Tournament. HOCKEY SCHOLAR NEIL ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL Bethel Park School District has committed to creating opportunities for students to develop 21st century technology skills. As part of this commitment, the Penguins’ Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program was introduced to Mr. Rosi’s fifth grade class at Neil Armstrong Middle School. “All of our students have some sort of familiar tie to the Penguins,so bringing this program into the classroom brought instant interest to the topics,” said Mr. Rosi. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of the game while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. DRAFT CLASS DANIEL SPRONG

Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), has become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.

Forward • 6th round, 167th overall In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college. Tiffels is a big soccer fan and follows his hometown club, FC Koln. His favorite player on the team is Lukas Podolski.

Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. For Pittsburgh Penguins games, all alcohol sales within the arena will conclude at the beginning of the third period. Individual concerts and events are determined on a show-by-show basis.

ATM MACHINES For the convenience of our fans, ATMs are available in CONSOL Energy Center: First Niagara Bank - Outside section 119 and 230, and in the lobby of the Trib Total Media Gate PNC Bank on PNC Legends Level - Outside of party suite 44 and suite 13

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

AUTOMOTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AAA will have a “Puck Truck” at all Penguins home games. The “Puck Truck” is available to assist patrons that have trouble with their vehicles in CONSOL Energy Center lots only. Fans can call 1.800.AAA.HELP after the start of the third period.

BABY CHANGING STATIONS Baby changing stations are available in all restrooms, located on all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

to inform guests of the situation and any instructions as applicable. All exits and emergency exits are posted with appropriate signage.

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: Peoples Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Items lost at events are held in storage for thirty (30) days and then either disposed of or donated to an appropriate charity.

A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. In September 2015, the last North Park McCandless dek rink was completed Paul J. Scuillo II Memorial Park Bloomfield bringing the total Renzie Park McKeesport completed rinks to 12. Richland Community Park Richland Twp. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.
