AROUND THE NHL HALL ON A ROLL © Getty Images
There were plenty of expectations surrounding Taylor Hall when the Edmonton Oilers made him the No. 1-overall pick in June’s National Hockey League Entry Draft. After a slow start, Hall is quickly living up to the high billing. Taylor Hall The 19-year-old left winger tallied twice — his first career multiple-goal game — in a 5-0 blanking of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec. 2 to give himself five goals over his previous seven games, and to allow the Oilers to win for the fourth time in five games. “At the beginning of the season, I said it was a process and I just wanted to get a comfort level down,” Hall said. “Definitely, there are games now where I feel very comfortable out there and my confidence is good. Any player can tell you, when you do have confidence it’s a special thing. I’m feeling pretty good about my game right now.”
The month of November was very good to the Columbus Blue Jackets who used an 8-4 record to improve to 14-8-1 for the season, giving the Penguins’ closest geographical rival the fourth-best record in the Western Conference as of Dec. 2. Leading the way for the Blue Jackets was captain Rick Nash. The 26-year-old power forward scored 10 goals in 11 November Rick Nash games, including a hat trick on Nov. 20 against the San Jose Sharks. For the season, Nash leads the Jackets with 13 goals, while his 18 points rank second on the squad behind Plum native R.J. Umberger.

KINGS STRUGGLE TO GET BACK ON TRACK
8
During the first few weeks of the season, the Los Angeles Kings ranked among the league’s top teams, winning 12 of their first 15 games. They’ve quickly fallen back to the pack in the Western Conference, losing seven of their next eight games heading into a matchup with the Florida Panthers on Dec. 2. Anze Kopitar What has been the biggest reason for the Kings’ struggles? A dramatic offensive dry spell. Los Angeles scored just 16 goals during its 1-7 stretch, an average of just two goals per game. That’s a low figure for any team, but especially for one that has the likes of Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Ryan Smyth and Drew Doughty leading the way. However, every team has rough patches throughout the course of an 82-game season, so expect the Kings to turn things around in a hurry.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.
MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 10
DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.
TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 16

TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.
GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

COMMUNITY UPDATE 2010 PITTSBURGH PENGUINS CHARITY ORNAMENT AUCTION During select November and December home games, the Pittsburgh Penguins Booster Club sold holiday ornaments for the benefit of the Autism Society of Pittsburgh. The ornaments were handcrafted by artisans at Wendell August Forge and each set includes three icicle ornaments, tied with a festive red ribbon and nestled in a custom box. A limited number of ornament sets were also cast in bronze or copper and each set individually numbered, then autographed by Penguins players, coaches, and Penguins great — Mario Lemieux. These beautiful bronze and copper ornaments were created especially for online auction and our friends at Wendell August Forge donated the set up and die creation to ensure that the Autism Society of Pittsburgh would receive the largest donation possible. Because of Wendell August Forge’s generosity and our outstanding fan base, we know that this auction will be a huge success. The auction can be found through the Penguins website and will end at noon on Friday, December 10. Thank you and happy bidding from the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Booster Club.

TONIGHT’S COMPETITORS ARE:
QUARTER-FINALS HEAT THREE: ARCTIC FOXES SQUIRT A MINOR VS. ALTOONA TRACKERS SQUIRT A MAJOR The one-on-one competition features Austin Gatesman/Brandon Scheffler from Arctic Foxes Squirt A Minor against Jacob Melisko/ Tyler Radigan from Pittsburgh Amateur Penguins Squirt 2. You can also view this and previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.
On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

THE CLEAR PICTURE It was the morning of a big game against Atlanta and an outwardly calm, cool and collected Dan Bylsma was admittedly emotional, excited and on edge inside. It wasn’t because the Thrashers came in having won six consecutive games. It was because the Penguins had won seven in a row. “I’m probably more conscious of my emotions when we’re winning, more serious when we’re winning,” Bylsma acknowledged back on Dec. 2. “On a day like today I worry more about being serious and focused and on task than maybe two weeks ago.” A couple of weeks prior to that muchanticipated battle with Dustin Byfuglien and the Thrashers, the Penguins had been scuffling rather than surging. Their record was barely over .500, they were having a hard time stringing wins together, their power play (which this season is being run by the head coach, Bylsma) was such a profound failure it was being mocked, there were still lingering doubts about what was wrong with goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, they were blowing third-period leads and they hadn’t been able to consistently win at home. Bylsma, for the most part, was his normal stoic self through it all, standing with arms folded behind the bench and a facial expression that refused to betray Contrary to his calm appearance, what was taking place in the games. Dan Bylsma is a very emotional person. That was also the Bylsma persona during the seven-game winning streak his team took into battle against Atlanta, a run of consistency that led to the Penguins suddenly being defined by statistical brilliance, such as their having the NHL’s best road record (9-3-1), the NHL’s top penalty-killing unit (90.5 percent) and the NHL’s leading scorer (Sidney Crosby, with 41 points). It’s the image Bylsma believes he needs to convey to his players, one that insists all is either under control or will be soon enough, no matter what. But it isn’t really him. “I’m an extremely emotional person that no one seems to see when I’m behind the bench,” he said. That person wasn’t as difficult to conceal as the Penguins’ early-season struggles suggested. The coaching staff had faith in the plan and the players all along and never lost sight of the big picture. continued on page 47

It was the same once the Penguins started stacking wins, as they had pre-Atlanta. There was no reason for a parade right about then, just as there was no reason panic when giving up a game-tying, short-handed, extra-attacker goal to the Rangers on the way to a 3-2 loss at the CONSOL Energy Center on Nov. 15. “The approach to our team and how we want to play is we want to play a certain way, the picture’s clear,” Bylsma explained. “The execution of the picture is clear within our room and among our guys. And whether it’s raining out or it’s snowing out or it’s sunny out, whether we’re home or away we play and act the same way. And we continue to evaluate where we’re at and how we’re playing and we need to get better in certain areas and work on certain areas. And then we get to go play a game. “You may lose a game. Your record may be 1-3 early on in the year. But the message and who we are and how we’re going to execute doesn’t change.” That patience, perspective and emotional stability have become defining organizational traits since Bylsma’s arrival, one the Penguins intend to rely upon in good times and bad. Although he’ll occasionally become terse in a postgame media briefing, Bylsma has yet to approach the type of meltdowns that could be counted upon periodically from his predecessor, Michel Therrien. “We’re in a process and it’s not going to change,” Bylsma said. “We know who we are and how we’re going to play. Whether you lose a game 7-4 to Boston and it looks terrible on the ice, that’s not the time to pull the pin out of the grenade or blow up some part of your team; you evaluate. It’s hard to do sometimes. There are emotions involved. “But [keeping those emotions in check] pays off in the long haul. It pays off in the dayto-day and it pays off in the end. On task and where we’re going is where our players know we need to be.” That’s not to suggest what you see is always what you’ll get from Bylsma, particularly behind closed doors. “I break things,” he allowed. “I tell the staff I’m going to break five to six things a year. Usually, I break four in excitement and two in anger. “Ceiling tiles, coolers; it doesn’t matter. I break more in excited energy and good energy than I do in negative energy, but there is a little bit of breaking in both.”

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT DECEMBER 27, 2000 • PENGUINS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 0 MELLON ARENA The hockey world was stunned — to say the least — when word leaked in early December 2000 that Penguins Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux was contemplating a comeback from a three-plus year retirement. Finally, on Dec. 27, that dream became a reality when Lemieux’s No. 66 banner was lowered from the Mellon Arena rafters and the 35-year-old icon returned to ice against the Toronto Maple Leafs as the first player-owner in National Hockey League history. Lemieux didn’t take long to re-affirm his status as the best hockey player on the planet. Just 33 seconds into the contest, Lemieux had the puck roll to his stick along the end boards behind the net. Lemieux quickly wrapped the biscuit to the front of the cage, where it sat in the crease of Maple Leafs netminder Curtis Joseph. Penguins captain Jaromir Jagr quickly sneaked in to sweep the loose puck into the cage before the net was removed from its moorings, allowing Lemieux to record an assist on his first shift. Alexei Kovalev upped Pittsburgh’s lead to 2-0 when he blistered a wrist shot past Joseph on a power play midway through the opening frame, but that goal simply served as a precursor to the fans getting exactly what they came to see at the 10:33 mark of the second period. Mario Lemieux made his dramatic After taking a pass from Lemieux, Jagr led the rush return to the ice and led a 5-0 victory into the Toronto zone. He stopped on a dime at the over the Leafs on Dec. 27, 2000. top of the far circle and did a half turn before noticing a streaking Lemieux alone in the slot. Jagr sent a perfect pass onto the blade of Lemieux. With a quick flick of the wrists, Lemieux lifted the Igloo to its feet by one-timing Jagr’s pass along the ice behind Joseph for the first goal of his comeback. For good measure, Lemieux added a third point less than four minutes later with a vintage Mario pass. Jumping on the turnover created by Jagr’s forecheck, Lemieux tossed a blind, backhand pass right onto the stick of Jan Hrdina standing in front of the net. Hrdina backhanded a shot behind Joseph to make the score 4-0 in favor of Pittsburgh. Jagr added a second goal late in the second period, while goaltender Garth Snow stopped 40 shots to record the shutout in a 5-0 Pittsburgh victory. But the story of the night was Lemieux, who once again wowed the Pittsburgh faithful by picking up three points (1G-2A) in his much-anticipated return. He would go on to record 76 points (35G-41A) in 43 games in arguably the greatest comeback in the history of professional sports. 79

CROSBY CONTINUES TO FIND WAYS TO AMAZE AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 23, PENGUINS CAPTAIN SIDNEY CROSBY HAS ALREADY ACCOMPLISHED QUITE A BIT FOR A PLAYER WHO IS IN THE MIDST OF JUST HIS SIXTH PROFESSIONAL SEASON. To recap his sparkling resume, Crosby became the youngest captain in National Hockey League history to win a Stanley Cup in 2009, scored the overtime, gamewinning goal in the championship game to secure the gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and has already won the Art Ross (scoring leader), ‘Rocket’ Richard (most goals) and Hart (MVP) Trophies. Crosby became the youngest captain in the NHL history to win a Stanley Cup in 2009.
If the first two months of the 2010-11 regular season are any indication, Crosby might want to consider making room for more end-of-theseason hardware,

Now, the EPA has just named Hyundai the most fuel-efficient carmaker in America.* Sure, it’s another important milestone reached, but it’s also a reminder to stay focused on whatever lies ahead. Crosby notched his 20th goal of the season in just 27 games on Dec. 2 against Atlanta putting him on pace to score 64 goals this season.
Last season, Crosby and Stamkos tied for the NHL goal-scoring lead with 51. The way the two have gone back-and-forth leading the race this year, it appears neither wants to share the Richard Trophy with the other this season. When Crosby hit the 20-goal mark against Atlanta on Dec. 2, he did so in the Penguins’ 27th game of the season, the fastest he’s hit that number in his six seasons (he had 20 goals in 30 games last season), putting him on pace to score 64 goals. That would be the highest single-season total in team history since Mario Lemieux scored 69 goals in 1995-96. “I hope I have to keep answering [questions about scoring goals],” Crosby said after scorching Atlanta. “It’s nice to see them go in. Sometimes you play well and they don’t. You want to make the most of chances you get.” Yes, scoring goals is definitely still the name of the game, but what amazes Crosby’s teammates about his goal-scoring prowess is that it hasn’t taken away from his all-around game one iota. Anytime the Penguins need to protect a lead late in the game — something that’s happened quite a bit during the team’s 10-0-1 run that moved them into first place in the Atlantic Division as of Dec. 2 — Crosby’s the man head coach Dan Bylsma sends over the boards to take the key faceoff.

Just like he does at the opposite end of the rink when he’s scoring that clutch goal, Crosby, who ranks first in the NHL with 357 faceoff wins, usually finds a way to get the job done. “He’s had some spurts where he’s had a lot of points,” Orpik said. “But his defensive game and especially faceoffs in key moments … He’s winning those every time.” Offensively … defensively … it doesn’t seem to matter these days. Wherever Sidney Crosby is on the ice, he’s still finding ways to make everyone marvel at his all-around excellence.
Crosby ranked first in the NHL with 357 faceoff wins as of Dec. 2.

PAHL — A DROP PASS TO THE NEXT GENERATION The act of transforming the city of Pittsburgh from a gridiron breeding ground to a hockey hotbed certainly did not happen overnight. A historian would trace it all to the year nineteen-hundred and eighty-four. June 9, 1984 to be exact — the day the Penguins selected future Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux. Who knew that a year in which the Pittsburgh Steelers removed two iconic figures — Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris — from their active roster, the same year that the Pittsburgh Pirates would finish the season in sixth place of the National League East Division — that 1984 would be the year that changed the sporting landscape in Pittsburgh forever. The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League had no crystal ball, but their rise to the athletic mainstream in our region took flight upon the arrival of Lemieux in 1984. Local rinks became bastions for ambition and 6 a.m. ice times served as a “Hockey Night in Pittsburgh” to the imaginative youth when thousands of children chased their dreams as members of a then-diminutive PAHL. By no coincidence, at the same time Lemieux and the Penguins were finding their own success, the population of the PAHL dramatically increased. The youth hockey league would never be considered modest again. Nearly 20 years ago, another hockey milestone was reached that took the game’s importance in our region to astonishing heights. For the first of three times in franchise history, the Pittsburgh Penguins were crowned as kings of the National Hockey League. Fueled by the Penguins and their most prominent player, the PAHL established itself as a permanent fixture in the lives of parents and children throughout Western Pennsylvania. As the current Sidney Crosby-led Penguins team strives for greatness at the highest level of hockey, it appears as though history is on the fast track to repeat itself. Year by year, former PAHL standouts are entering parenthood. The children who once filed onto the ice for early morning practice are now becoming purveyors of the game and parents to the next generation of hockey enthusiasts. Their formative link to hockey is strengthened by the 2009 championship Penguins and their star of stars — Crosby. Exposing a new generation to the sport has clearly reinforced the passion for hockey that exists throughout Western Pennsylvania. Much like the Penguins’ torch was passed from [The Magnificent One] Lemieux to [The Next One] Crosby, the game of hockey will remain in good hands.

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending. The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

PENS PROFILE CRAIG ADAMS
When Craig Adams peruses the NHL stats, he knows he won’t see his name in lights. But Adams knows where to look to find satisfaction: The penalty-killing percentages. As of Dec. 1, the Penguins’ PK led the NHL with a 90.5 success rate. The Penguins had faced 32 straight opposition power plays without allowing a goal. “For a guy like me, it’s really important,” said Adams, a vital cog on the PK. “I go home and look at the percentages every night. It’s a big part of my game. It’s the same with Max [Talbot], Cookie [Matt Cooke] and Duper [Pascal Dupuis], and when Jordan [Staal] comes back, it will be the same thing with him.” The Penguins’ PK has been incredible, to say the least. Adams credits goaltenders Marc-Andre Fleury and Brent Johnson for much of the unit’s success. “I don’t want to say it’s luck, but there’s luck involved,” said the 6-foot, 197-pound center. “[The other team is] still making plays. They’re still getting chances. But when they do, our goaltender is making saves. If one of those pucks goes in, all of a sudden the PK doesn’t look so good. “It’s a combination of us executing, blocking shots and getting pucks out when we can. But a lot of it is goaltending.”
The statistical success of the Penguins’ penalty killing unit is important to Craig Adams.
continued on page 140

continued from page 139
Much of it is repetition and rhythm, also. Adams thinks the Penguins’ PK has found a groove. Confidence, too. “When you talk about confidence, you usually talk about guys scoring goals, or goaltending,” said Adams, 33. “But it’s the same on the PK. “If you’re rolling and you have confidence, you’re not thinking as much, you’re making reads better and getting pucks out when you can.” Winning draws helps, too. Adams, the Penguins’ right-handed faceoff specialist, was winning 44.1 percent of his draws as of Dec. 1. “It’s important,” Adams said. “If you flip it around and look at our power play, Geno [Malkin] and Sid [Crosby] hate going back for pucks and starting the power play again. “Whenever you make the team come up the ice, you get the chance to break up the play again. Winning draws on the PK is important, it’s something we could be better at, and Jordan’s going to help us with that when he comes back. “Faceoffs are something we’ve worked on a lot. When you have a good night on faceoffs, it makes the PK easier. Every power play, you’re taking 20-25 seconds right off the top.” As of Dec. 1, the Penguins were second in the NHL with five short-handed goals (Adams netted one). Scary stats: The Penguins’ penalty-kill had scored just five times less than opposition power plays, and just two goals less than the Florida and New Jersey power plays had each tallied on the season to date. “You don’t always know [when to go],” Adams said. “You don’t always make the right read. It’s not our job to go out there and score [shorthanded] goals. “But at the same time, a lot of teams use a forward [on the point]. A forward won’t normally stand in on a 50-50 puck. If that puck gets chipped by him, he’s flat-footed. You get a lot of two-on-ones that way. We’ve done a good job so far. We’re not taking too many chances where we get burned. We take them when we get them.” Adams is having an unusual year statistically: The defensive-minded grit specialist got a goal and three assists in his first 24 games, but got a goal and two assists in one night, namely the Penguins’ 5-3 loss at Tampa Bay on Oct. 27. Adams was plus-3 that game. “I’m due for one of those three-point games again, right?” said Adams, smiling. “It would be nice, for sure. “Probably the last 4-5 games I’ve had some close calls. As long as I keep getting chances and I’m around the net looking for loose pucks, eventually I’ll get [points].” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).
