HAWKS FIND A WAY The Chicago Blackhawks are finding out during the first two months of the 2010-11 regular season what the Penguins learned last year — sometimes staying on top of the mountain is even harder than getting there. Chicago, the defending Stanley Cup champion, has posted a respectable 16-12-2 record as of Dec. 9, good for fourth place in the Western Conference, but it’s Patrick Kane been a battle to remain there. Already this season the Blackhawks have been forced to play nine games without star forward Marian Hossa, who is currently on injured reserve. Chicago’s injury woes multiplied on Dec. 7 when it was announced that Patrick Kane, the team’s second-leading scorer with 27 points (11G-16A), will miss a minimum of three weeks due to a lower-body injury. The Blackhawks, winners of seven of 10 games despite the injuries, won their first game sans Kane, 5-3 over Dallas, on Dec. 8.

ROOKIE SENSATION On a team loaded with offensive talent which includes the likes of Dany Heatley, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski , it’s rookie Logan Couture who paces the San Jose Sharks in goal scoring through the first 27 games with 13. Logan Couture The 21-year-old Guelph, Ontario native, whom Sharks head coach Todd McLellan said has been arguably San Jose’s top player this year, was the star of a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Dec. 8. Couture scored once in regulation, his fifth goal over a four-game stretch, and added another tally in the shootout. “He might be surprising a lot of people, but he’s not surprising anybody on our club,” McLellan said. “Guys pull for him, guys root for him, guys know he’s the go-to player right now. I know it’s a long year and there will probably be some moments when things aren’t going to go his way, but we’ll be there to support him and his teammates will be there for him. Right now, he’s got it going and if we have one individual as a catalyst, it would be him.”
Long-time Dallas Star Jere Lehtinen officially hung up his skates on Dec. 8. The 37-year-old Finish forward spent his entire 14-year NHL career with Dallas, scoring 243 goals and adding 514 points in 875 games. Lehtinen was a member of Dallas’ 1999 Stanley Cup championship squad, earning an assist on Brett Hull’s controversial overtime, seriesclinching goal in Game Six. Lehtinen was a five-time Olympian and three-time Selke Trophy winner.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.
MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.
JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.
TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.
GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS WIVES ASSOCIATION HOSTS 3RD ANNUAL PENS & PINS CHARITY BOWLING TOURNAMENT The Pittsburgh Penguins Wives & Girlfriends will host their annual charity bowling tournament to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Greater PA & Southern WV on Monday, January 17 at the Crafton-Ingram Bowling Lanes. Fans attending this event will have a chance to bowl with the Penguins. The tournament will feature Penguins players and coaches serving as celebrity team captains for each competing bowling team. Bowlers will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction and purchase mystery pucks or homemade baked goods provided by the team’s wives and girlfriends. Reservations to bowl or to sponsor a Wish child are on sale now. Spectator tickets are not available for this event. Tournament openings are limited and may be purchased for $400 per bowler by calling the Make-A-Wish Foundation office at 412-471-9474. The Make-A-Wish office hours are weekdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. TAG-A-KID In the event a parent and child might be separated at a CONSOL Energy Center event, parents can register their child with the Tag-A-Kid program. A wristband with the parent’s seat location and contact number will be given to the child. Registration is available at the Guest Services office located outside section 104.
VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.
WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. Upon arrival, guests can arrange for a wheelchair at any entrance of CONSOL Energy Center. Please see a CONSOL Energy Center employee to assist with wheelchair transportation.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT MAY 11, 1996 • PENGUINS 7, RANGERS 3 CIVIC ARENA The Pittsburgh Penguins returned home for Game Five of the 1996 Eastern Conference semifinals hoping to eliminate Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and the rest of the New York Rangers. Pittsburgh had the Rangers on the brink of elimination thanks to a pair of victories — 3-2 and 4-1 — in Games Three and Four at Madison Square Garden. Not wanting to give the Rangers and their potent offensive attack any momentum whatsoever, Penguins superstars Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr rose to the occasion once again by both notching hat tricks in a 7-3 series-clinching victory at the Civic Arena. Lemieux and the Penguins struck first midway through the opening period. With the Penguins’ Joe Dziedzic in the penalty box serving a tripping penalty, Lemieux cashed in shorthanded to beat Mike Richter and give Pittsburgh the early 1-0 advantage. Jagr upped that lead to 2-0 when he cashed in on a power play 2:35 minutes into the second period. At that point, it seemed as if the route was on. But New York, led by the inspirational Messier, scored three of the next four goals on tallies by Messier, Sergio Momesso and Niklas Sundstrom to draw even with Pittsburgh, 3-3. Jaromir Jagr and Mario Lemieux both Pittsburgh’s only goal during notched hat tricks in the Penguins 7-3 the stretch was a power-play goal victory over the Rangers on May 11, 1996. by Lemieux. However, just when it seemed as though all the momentum had tilted New York’s way, Jagr and Lemieux proved why they were the two best players on the planet at that time. Jagr struck twice in a 4:43 minute span to close the second period, including a goal with just 13 seconds remaining in the frame, to place the Penguins back in front, 5-3, heading into the third. It was a lead the Penguins would never relinquish. Bryan Smolinski all but sent the Rangers into the offseason with his goal 7:23 into the final period. Lemieux completed his hat trick with just under five minutes to play to give the Penguins two hat tricks in one postseason contest for the first — and only — time in franchise history. Ken Wregget stopped 29 of 32 shots between the pipes as the Penguins advanced to the conference finals for the third time in six seasons, where they would take on the Florida Panthers. 79

DEE-FENSE ISN’T JUST A STEELERS THING Although Sidney Crosby’s scoring streak had justifiably become the talk of the league, one of the main components of a Penguins run that had stacked up 11 consecutive Ws heading into an early December visit to Buffalo was defense. That’s right, defense. In the wake of the Penguins’ 5-2 victory over Toronto on Dec. 8, Crosby had scored in 17 consecutive games, had racked up 35 points in those 17 games (20+15), and was leading the NHL in scoring (48 points) and goals (26). And the Penguins were third Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang work together in the league in team goalsto shutdown the opponents offense. against average (2.27), third in shots per game against (27.6) and third in penalty killing (88.5 percent). Those latter stats may surprise some, but they’re what head coach Dan Bylsma had in mind all along, and always has. “Since I’ve come to Pittsburgh there’s been a notion that we play offensive hockey,” Bylsma said. “That’s never been the case for what the coaching staff [wanted] and what the mindset is in our dressing room. I’ve always taken pride in playing defense and limiting opportunities. It’s always something I’ve stressed.” During the Penguins’ run to the Stanley Cup in 2008-09 they were a difficult team to score against. That had changed by last season’s playoffs, which turned out to be a contributing factor in the Penguins’ disappointing, second-round exit. One of the goals coming into this season was to tighten up again, an objective the Penguins sought to achieve through the free-agency signings of defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek and through a re-emphasis on sound defense. “I think in the 2009 playoffs we had players that identified more with that aspect of their role on the team, Hal Gill and Rob Scuderi,” Bylsma said. “They jumped over the boards on the PK and against other teams’ top lines to do one thing. And so we had a little bit more of an identity, a part of what we did, when we jumped over the boards. “The following year [2009-10] things didn’t change [in terms of how important defense continued on page 99

The new shutdown pair on defense is Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang, and that’s a role Bylsma believes has helped allow Letang to flourish despite his offensive skill set and potential. “I think that’s helped ‘Tanger’s’ game,” Bylsma said. “He’s got that [mindset] when he jumps over the boards.” Orpik and Zbynek Michalek come together On the penalty kill to make the No. 1 pair on the penalty kill. the No. 1 pair is Orpik and Michalek. “The emphasis hasn’t changed,” Bylsma insisted. “You can be saying the same things year after year after, but the identity of your team may take on different things based on personnel and for different reasons. “We made a stronger focus on playing defense and being harder to score against.”

In Chris Conner’s first 14 games with the Penguins this season, the team went 13-0-1. Not bad. “Yeah, it’s nice,” said the 5-foot-8, 180-pound winger after the Penguins ran their winning streak to 11 games with a 5-2 home win against Toronto on Dec. 8. “Right now, we’re playing some good hockey. We’re getting some good bounces, too, but we’re working for those bounces.” Conner was summoned from the Penguins’ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton farm club Nov. 10, and the Michigan native has since usually slotted in on the third line with Mark Letestu and Tyler Kennedy. They’re not exactly a trio of monsters, but Conner, Letestu and Kennedy provide speed and a frantic forecheck that creates turnovers and keeps opposition defensemen scrambling. “I think we all know our strengths. It’s not pushing guys around out there,” Conner said. “It’s getting to those pucks first, and that’s what we’re doing. “We all work hard, and we all know our strengths and stick to them. We don’t try to create too much. Conner signed with the Penguins before last season. He had two goals and one assist in eight NHL games, and 19 goals and 37 assists in 59 American Hockey League contests. Conner, as noted, is said to be 5-8. Letestu is listed at 5-11, as is Kennedy. Those are all generous estimates… or outright lies, depending on your point of view. But Conner and his linemates do their best every game to prove size doesn’t matter. “I don’t think so,” said Conner when asked if his stature hurts. “All of us are used to it. We’ve been playing hockey our whole lives. “It can be [an obstacle]. But at the same time, you get used to it. You kind of feed off it, and you want to prove people wrong.” Conner got a regular shift from head coach Dan Bylsma the minute he was elevated from the minors. “I just wanted to take advantage of whatever opportunity I got,” he said. “I’ve been playing with those guys [Letestu and Kennedy] and I think we’ve been playing strong.” Said defenseman Ben Lovejoy, “All three of those guys are energy-type players, they all have great speed and they all kind of make a choice to play that way. They know that in order for that line to be successful, they need to play in the offensive zone and they’ve really bought into that mentality. PAHL — A DROP PASS TO THE NEXT GENERATION The act of transforming the city of Pittsburgh from a gridiron breeding ground to a hockey hotbed certainly did not happen overnight. A historian would trace it all to the year nineteen-hundred and eighty-four. June 9, 1984 to be exact — the day the Penguins selected future Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux. Who knew that a year in which the Pittsburgh Steelers removed two iconic figures — Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris — from their active roster, the same year that the Pittsburgh Pirates would finish the season in sixth place of the National League East Division — that 1984 would be the year that changed the sporting landscape in Pittsburgh forever. The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League had no crystal ball, but their rise to the athletic mainstream in our region took flight upon the arrival of Lemieux in 1984. Local rinks became bastions for ambition and 6 a.m. ice times served as a “Hockey Night in Pittsburgh” to the imaginative youth when thousands of children chased their dreams as members of a then-diminutive PAHL. By no coincidence, at the same time Lemieux and the Penguins were finding their own success, the population of the PAHL dramatically increased. The youth hockey league would never be considered modest again. Nearly 20 years ago, another hockey milestone was reached that took the game’s importance in our region to astonishing heights. For the first of three times in franchise history, the Pittsburgh Penguins were crowned as kings of the National Hockey League. Fueled by the Penguins and their most prominent player, the PAHL established itself as a permanent fixture in the lives of parents and children throughout Western Pennsylvania. As the current Sidney Crosby-led Penguins team strives for greatness at the highest level of hockey, it appears as though history is on the fast track to repeat itself. Year by year, former PAHL standouts are entering parenthood. The children who once filed onto the ice for early morning practice are now becoming purveyors of the game and parents to the next generation of hockey enthusiasts. Their formative link to hockey is strengthened by the 2009 championship Penguins and their star of stars — Crosby. Exposing a new generation to the sport has clearly reinforced the passion for hockey that exists throughout Western Pennsylvania. Much like the Penguins’ torch was passed from [The Magnificent One] Lemieux to [The Next One] Crosby, the game of hockey will remain in good hands.

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending. Created in 1985, Pizza Hut’s “BOOK IT!” program is a national reading incentive initiative for children in grades K-6. GUERIN IMPACTED PENGUINS ON AND OFF THE ICE Bill Guerin spent time playing for eight different teams during his 18-year NHL career, but two teams stood out the most to him — his first team [New Jersey] and his last team [Pittsburgh]. He won a Stanley Cup with both squads, so it was only fitting that he announced his retirement on December 6 at CONSOL Energy Center before the Penguins’ 2-1 victory over the Devils. “The Devils gave me my start. Fortunately, we were able to win the Stanley Cup as a family together. It was amazing.” The fact that Guerin chose to retire as a Penguin is not lost on the current team, many of whom spent time reminiscing about their time with Guerin. Guerin — who came to Pittsburgh at the 2009 trade deadline — was a hard-working goal-scorer on the ice, but he was a prankster off the ice, never afraid to make fun of anyone. “I think a couple minutes [into his first practice] he was already making fun of Sidney [Crosby],” Marc-Andre Fleury said with a smile. “Oh yeah,” Crosby agreed. “The first time I met him, within 10 seconds. I was able to learn a lot as far as keeping things loose, and I think that’s a big part of what he brought.” Crosby cited Guerin’s quick wit and enjoyable personality as one reason why he fit in so quickly. “He’s got a skill,” Crosby said. “I don’t Bill Guerin hoisted his second Stanley know what it is. got a talent, he’s quick. You can’t catch that guy. You don’t want to get into a verbal battle with him because he’s really quick.” Fleury wasn’t immune to Guerin’s antics either. “I remember I grew a mustache in the playoffs, but my mustache was weak,” Fleury said. “Every day he would come in and put his finger over my mustache and go, ‘hello my friend’ [with a heavy French accent]. “I have a lot of good memories. He scored some big goals, too.” One goal in particular that everyone pointed to, even Guerin himself, was his overtime game-winner in Game Two of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against Philadelphia in 2009. The Penguins found themselves with a two-man advantage late in the first overtime session, and Guerin sent a shot from near to goal line past goaltender Martin Biron to give the Penguins a two-game lead in the series. Pittsburgh would wind up winning that series, and every other series of the playoffs to capture the franchise’s third Stanley Cup. “That was real special for me,” Guerin said. “I was pretty proud of that one.” “That was a huge goal for us,” Crosby said. “I think Billy scored some big goals throughout his time here, but that was a big one. He was a leader, and that was a good example of him stepping up at the right time for us.” Head coach Dan Bylsma said that the goal “kind of got [the team] started” en route to the championship. When asked what first comes to mind when he thinks of Guerin, Bylsma responded with an image that nearly every Penguin fan can remember. “I just think of that big gray beard.”
