Tyler Kennedy scored in both Games Three and Four marking the first time in his career that he tallied in consecutive playoff games.
THE PENGUINS Marc-Andre Fleury, who made 29 saves in Game Four, is 7-2 all-time in playoff overtime games. . . The 31 shots allowed by the Penguins in Game Four were the fewest ever allowed by Pittsburgh in a multiple-overtime game. . . Kennedy has scored a goal in consecutive playoff games for the first time in his career. . . The Penguins have lost three of their last five home playoff games. . . Kennedy’s goal in Game Four snapped an 0-for-15 slump on the power play for the Penguins, their longest in one playoff year since Pittsburgh went 0-for-17 in 2009 (Games Four-Six vs. Flyers and Game One vs. Capitals). It also was the Penguins’ first playoff power-play goal in 23 attempts dating back to last spring’s series against the Montreal Canadiens. . . Ben Lovejoy, who had never recorded a playoff point, has points in each of the last two games. . . Mike Rupp has been plus in six consecutive games (plus-6). . . Eric Tangradi dressed for his first Stanley Cup playoff game in Game Four and led Pittsburgh with five hits. . . Chris Kunitz, suspended by the NHL for Game Four because of an elbow to the head of Simon Gagne in Game Three, is eligible to return to the lineup today. He has four goals in seven games against the Lightning this season. . . Brooks Orpik played a team-high 40:32 in Game Four. . . The Penguins, who dropped Game Two here, 5-1, have not lost consecutive home playoff games since losing Game Four and Game Six to Detroit in the 2008 Stanley Cup Final.
TAMPA BAY The Lightning will have Steve Downie back in the lineup today after he was suspended for Game Four by the NHL for his hit on Ben Lovejoy in Game Three. . . Victor Hedman is minus-4 in the series. . . Steven Stamkos, who was second in the NHL this season with 45 goals, has just one assist through the first four games of this series. He has never scored an even-strength goal against the Penguins. . . St. Louis is the only Tampa player with more than one goal in this series. . . Former Penguin Ryan Malone is still looking for his first point of the series. . . Sean Bergenheim’s goal in Game Four was his first ever in the playoffs. 6

PROUD TO POWER THE PENGUINS NATION. 速
RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 200-plus straight games, sold out every suite for four straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for four straight seasons — the sellout streak is at 206 games following the 2010-11 regular season— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Shero’s are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.
TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

AROUND THE NHL NHL, NBC SIGN RECORD-BREAKING DEAL The National Hockey League and the NBC Sports Group signed a record-breaking 10-year television and media rights deal on April 20 that will take the partnership through the 2020-21 season . NBC Sports Group will pay about $200 million annually for the length of the contract, according to SportsBusiness Daily . NBC remains the exclusive network home of the NHL and Versus stays as the exclusive cable home of the NHL in the United States . Between them, NBC and Versus will telecast 100 exclusive regular-season games, nearly double this just-completed regular season total . NBC and Versus will also both feature exclusive “Game of the Week” time slots during the regular season . This deal also marks the first-ever national distribution of all Stanley Cup Playoffs games, including, for the first time, exclusive coverage starting with the League conference semifinals . Every postseason game will be broadcast in entirety on NBC, Versus or a major NBC Universal national cable channel .

Michael Grabner of the New York Islanders, Jeff Skinner of the Carolina Hurricanes and Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks are this season’s Calder Memorial Trophy nominees . The award is given to “the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League .” All three rookies have eclipsed the 30-goal mark . Grabner, 23, scored 34 goals (including six shorthanded tallies) and 52 points with the Islanders after being waived by Florida at the beginning of the season . Couture, 22, tallied 32 goals (the second-highest total on the Sharks roster) and 56 points . Skinner, 18, became the seventh-youngest player in NHL history to record a 30-goal season with 31 . Although he scored the fewest goals of the three candidates, Skinner finished with the most points (63) .

MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.
BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as fulltime host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2. 48

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS DELIGHTED AT STUDENTS’ ENTHUSIASM IN
STUDENTS FOR STANLEY CONTEST
The Penguins hosted a Students for Stanley banner contest for students throughout Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh
Pivik Elementary School in Plum, PA – Grade 6
as the team begins the quest for another Stanley Cup. The Students for Stanley contest invited elementary, middle and high school students to create 4’x6’ banners and submit one banner per grade level to represent their school. The schools then submitted a photograph of their banner for a panel of Penguins judges to view. Banners were judged on school spirit and enthusiasm for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The judges determined a winner for each grade level, Grades 1 - 12, and each winning grade’s banner will be displayed at CONSOL Energy Center during the first round of the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The banners for each winning grade will also be featured on the team’s website. Banners were also selected as the overall winners for elementary, middle and high schools. The overall winning banner for elementary schools was created by Pivik Elementary School in Plum, PA; the middle school banner was made by Mellon Middle School in Pittsburgh, PA; and the high school banner by Carlynton Junior-Senior High School in Carnegie, PA. Each overall winner will receive a commemorative Students for Stanley trophy for their school to display. We thank all schools and students who participated in the Students for Stanley contest and look forward to hosting other contests in the upcoming season.

THE MOST FUN YOU CAN HAVE WITH THE PENGUINS, WITHOUT GOING TO THE GAME!
FOURTH LINE STEPS UP DOWN THE STRETCH By: Jason Seidling
60
If you attended a Penguins playoff game at either CONSOL Energy Center for Games One and Two against Tampa Bay, or any of the three previous years at Mellon Arena, you probably couldn’t help but notice the following sign hanging from the upper deck: “It only weighs 35 pounds, but it takes an entire team to lift.” It, of course, is the Stanley Cup. If there is a team that knows it takes a collective effort to lift the Stanley Cup, it’s the Pittsburgh Penguins. Veteran forward Mike Rupp won a Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 2003. As the hero of New Jersey’s Game Seven Cup-clinching victory over Anaheim, Rupp knows the importance of fourth-liners such as himself and current linemates Craig Adams and Arron Asham contributing timely goals more than most. “It’s big,” Rupp said. “We need everyone to contribute. There’s times when the game plan of another team is to strategically try to shut down or contain certain lines. With that being done, you need other guys to step up. The three of us have been in those positions before and we’ve been able to come through.” Getting offensive production throughout the lineup takes on an even greater significance this spring. That’s because the Penguins are currently playing without their two bell cows in the scoring department — the undisputed best player in the world, Sidney Crosby, and 2009 Conn Smythe Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin. While Crosby continues to skate with the team on a limited basis — providing hope that he might be able to re-join them at some point during the playoffs if his recovery from an early-January concussion goes well — the Penguins know they won’t be seeing Malkin anytime prior to training camp in September after the Russian star saw his season end after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee against Buffalo on Feb. 4. If the first two games of their opening-round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning are any indication, it appears as though the Penguins’ fourth line is willing to step up and help shoulder some of the offensive burden. In Game One, Asham scored a crucial — and probably back-breaking from Tampa Bay’s point of view — goal 18 seconds after Alex Kovalev staked the Penguins to a 1-0 lead by converting the rebound of his own wraparound attempt in a 3-0 Pittsburgh victory. That goal, combined with his assist in Game Two, gave Asham five points (3G-2A) over his previous nine postseason games dating back to last spring when he helped the Philadelphia Flyers reach the Stanley Cup Final by contributing four goals and seven points in 23 postseason contests. “Tampa’s got some grinders out there as well, but we have pretty much every line that can go out there and play physical,” Asham said. “It’s been going well for us, and hopefully we can keep things going.” Things didn’t go as well for the Penguins in Game Two as the Lightning responded to their Game One defeat by soundly beating the Penguins by a 5-1 margin. However, it was once again Asham and the Penguins’ fourth line that picked up Pittsburgh’s lone goal. continued on page 62

continued from page 61
With the Penguins trailing, 3-0, midway through the second period, Asham carried the puck from the far seam directly to the front of the cage, where the rubber went off Tampa netminder Dwayne Roloson and skidded out to the slot. Adams picked up the loose change and deposited it right into the back of the net to momentarily reinvigorate the home crowd. “We’re not going to score every game,” Adams said. “If we can get one here and there that can win us a game or change momentum of a game, then we’re doing our job.” The goal was Adams’ sixth goal in 39 postseason games with the Penguins, compared to four in 171 regular-season contests since joining the team late in the 2008-09 season. Although Adams’ numbers and the ones Asham posted last year with the Flyers suggest that both raise their game in playoffs, neither insisted that was the case. “I don’t change anything,” Adams said. “It’s a fun time of the year. My job doesn’t change, I just do certain little things that I try to do every game. It’s just more fun this time of year.” “Not really, you just go out there and give it your all,” Asham said. “It seems like come playoff time, pucks bounce our way a little bit more. Hopefully, it continues.” Based upon the way all three finished the regular season, the Penguins have every reason to expect them to continue chipping in for however long the team stays alive. Rupp, who had the most points of the trio with 17 (9G-8A), had three goals and four points over the final five regular-season games. Adams, whose four goals were his most since scoring seven in 2006-07, had three points (1G-2A) over his final four games, including a three-game scoring streak from April 2-8 that is his longest point streak since joining the Penguins. Asham, who was injured for much of the second half, averaged almost three hits per game over his final eight games as he worked his way back from an early-February concussion. Head coach Dan Bylsma likes what he’s seen from his fourth line thus far. If the Penguins can eliminate the penalty trouble that plagued them in Game Two, he anticipates using them more as the postseason unfolds. “They’ve been a big factor for us,” Bylsma said. “[Game Two] I wanted to use them more, but the penalty situation throughout the first and second periods prevented them from getting out and being a bigger factor for us.”
Bylsma likes what he’s seen from his fourth line thus far. As the postseason unfolds he anticipates using them more.

BEAVER BADGERS A MAJOR BLACK and the One-On-One Competition Champions
CORY STEINLE/ OWEN SCHAEFER from Beaver Badgers A Major Black
You can view previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.
On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

2010.11 SEASON NOTES BANNER SEASON The Penguins concluded their 43rd National Hockey League campaign by earning the second-most points (106) and wins (49) in franchise history. Pittsburgh’s 49-25-8 overall record tied for first place in the Atlantic Division (lost the tiebreaker to the Philadelphia Flyers). Pittsburgh’s 106 points were five more than it recorded last season and seven more than the 99 it had during its 2009 Stanley Cup championship season. The Penguins finished with the third-most (tied) points in the NHL and earned the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, earning home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
OVERCOMING ADVERSITY It was a testament to head coach Dan Bylsma, his coaching staff and a total team effort that the Penguins were able to post such a strong regular-season record despite facing plenty of adversity throughout the course of the year, including 350 man-games lost due to injury — the team’s highest total since 2002-03 (410). Included in that total was a combined 119 games missed by the team’s top-three offensive threats in Sidney Crosby (41 games missed), Evgeni Malkin (39) and Jordan Staal (39). Crosby missed the entire second half of the season after being diagnosed with a concussion, while Staal missed the season’s first 39 games following an offseason procedure to repair a foot infection and a broken hand suffered in practice. Malkin suffered a torn ACL and MCL in the second period against Buffalo on Feb. 4, forcing him to miss the final 29 games of the season. Beginning on Jan. 20, the Penguins played 34 of the final 35 games of the season without both Crosby and Malkin. During that stretch the team posted an impressive 20-11-4 (.629 pct.) record. continued on page 115

HOLIDAY WIN SHOPPING The Penguins’ 3-1 defeat of the Vancouver Canucks on Nov. 17 was the beginning of a 12-game winning streak for the team that ranks as the second-longest in team history and tied for the 11th-longest in NHL history. During the streak, which ended with a 5-2 victory at Buffalo on Dec. 11, the Penguins outscored their opponents by a 42-19 margin and held the lead for all but 28:53 minutes of the streak. The only time the Penguins trailed at the end of the first or second period during the streak was a 1-0 deficit at the conclusion of the first period vs. Ottawa on Nov. 26. Sixteen different Penguins scored goals and 21 recorded at least one point during the streak. Sidney Crosby scored 14 of the Penguins’ 42 goals (33.3%).
SID’S SCORING STREAK On Nov. 5, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby scored a pair of goals at Anaheim to begin a career-high 25-game scoring streak that would see the 23-year-old superstar tally 26 goals and 24 assists for 50 points. Crosby’s scoring streak was the longest in the NHL since Quebec’s Mats Sundin had a 30-game point streak in 1992-93. With 26 goals during his streak, Crosby became just the fifth player in NHL history (Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull, Steve Yzerman and Bryan Trottier) to average at least a goal per game throughout the duration of a scoring streak of 25 games or more. During his streak, which was tied for the 11thlongest point streak in NHL history, Crosby scored at least one goal 18 times, had 16 multiple-point games and led the Penguins to a 19-5-1 record.
DAN THE MAN Pittsburgh’s impressive regular season is a testament to the coaching of head coach Dan Bylsma, who is one of the leading candidates for the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year. Despite his team losing 350 man-games due to injury, Bylsma was still able to guide his team to a second-straight 100-point regular-season finish. Bylsma, who has posted a 114-56-19 record since taking over as head coach on Feb. 15, 2009, became the third-winningest coach in franchise history, surpassing Hall of Famer Scotty

Bowman, with the Penguins’ 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Jan. 25. Later in the season, Bylsma became the fifth-fastest coach in NHL history to reach 100 wins (163 games) when the Penguins defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 2-1 in overtime, on Feb. 11.
FLOWER POWER Despite playing behind a depleted lineup for much of the second half of the season, Marc-Andre Fleury was able to put together the finest season of his career with a 36-20-5 record, 2.32 goals-against average and .918 save percentage. Fleury’s outstanding performance earned him the team MVP award and recognition for NHL MVP. Beginning with his 150th career win vs. Tampa Bay on Nov. 12, Fleury posted a 35-14-5 record, 2.13 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage to end the season. Fleury was especially impressive in one-goal games, where he went 21-8-5 with a 2.08 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. His save percentage in third periods of one-goal games was .935.
For the first time in franchise history, the Penguins finished the regular season with the NHL’s No. 1-ranked penalty killing unit with a success rate of 86.1 percent. Prior to this season the Penguins’ best finish was fourth overall in 1992-93. The Penguins’ 86.1-percent success rate was the second-highest percentage in team history (86.4 percent; 1997-98). The Penguins equaled a franchise record by going nine consecutive games without surrendering an opposition power-play goal from Nov. 13-29 (achieved twice prior: March 29-April 16, 1998; Dec. 13-30, 1996). Led by Pascal Dupuis’ teambest four shorthanded tallies, the Penguins finished the regular season with 13 shorthanded goals, the second-highest total in the NHL behind the New York Islanders (15).

NEW BUILDING, SAME HOME-ICE ADVANTAGE The Penguins opened the brand-new CONSOL Energy Center for the 2010-11 regular season. Groundbreaking began on the state-of-the-art facility on August 14, 2008, and the Penguins took ownership of their new home on August 2, 2010. CONSOL Energy Center features a hockey seating capacity of 18,087 and includes 66 suites, 32 loge boxes and 2,000 club seats. The Penguins played their first-ever regular-season game at CONSOL Energy Center on Oct. 7 when they fell to the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2. Pittsburgh rebounded from that loss to finish the season with a 25-13-2 home record. Only the Vancouver Canucks (27) and Anaheim Ducks (26) finished with more home wins.
ROAD WARRIORS Once again the Penguins proved to be one of the NHL’s elite road teams, finishing the season with a 24-11-6 road mark — good for 54 points, the fourth-best figure in the NHL. Pittsburgh’s 54 road points established a single-season franchise record, while its 24 wins tied a team record (1992-93). The Penguins equaled a franchise record by winning seven straight road games from Nov. 6-Dec. 11 (also achieved: Oct. 3-Nov. 3, 2009 and March 14-April 9, 1993).
LETANG THRIVES IN INCREASED ROLE Blueliner Kris Letang thrived in his first season as the Penguins’ No. 1 defenseman. Letang, who earned his first All-Star appearance when he was voted in by the fans as a write-in candidate as part of NHL Fan Balloting presented by XM, hit the 50-point mark for the first time in his career by notching eight goals and 42 assists. Letang, who appeared in all 82 games for the first time in his career, led the Penguins in ice time (24:02), power-play points (24) and shots (236). His career-high plus-15 rating led all Pittsburgh D-men.

SELLOUT STREAK ALIVE The Penguins sold out all 40 games at CONSOL Energy Center, the fourth straight season the team has sold out its entire home slate. In the process the Penguins extended the team’s consecutive sellout streak to 206 games (including playoffs) since the streak first began on Feb. 14, 2007 vs. Chicago at Mellon Arena. Since the sellout streak began, 3,565,959 fans have seen the Penguins in action, an average of 17,311 per game. During the streak the Penguins have an overall record of 127-60-19 (.663 pct.). On March 12 against Montreal, the Penguins celebrated the streak’s 200th consecutive sellout.
PRIMETIME CLASSIC The Penguins became the first NHL team to appear in two Winter Classics when they hosted the Washington Capitals in the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 1, 2011 at Heinz Field. Originally slated to be a 1 p.m. start – the game was delayed until 8 p.m. because of weather, making it the first primetime Winter Classic. Despite getting the game’s opening goal off the stick of Evgeni Malkin in the second period, the Penguins fell to the Capitals, 3-1.
REALITY STARS The NHL delved into the reality television world when the Penguins and Washington Capitals co-starred in the four-episode HBO series “24/7 Penguins-Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic.” The hit series, which debuted Dec. 15 at 10 p.m., provided a weekly behind-the-scenes look at both the Penguins and Capitals leading up to the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day at Heinz Field. HBO cameras were given all-access beginning the first week of December and lasting through the Winter Classic.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT MAY 15, 1995 • PENGUINS 6, CAPITALS 5 OT CIVIC ARENA “In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and the Penguins and Washington Capitals meeting in the Stanley Cup playoffs.” If you were a Penguins fan during the 1990s — be it die-hard or otherwise — chances are good you heard this joke a time or two. That’s because beginning with a 1991 Patrick Division Finals matchup between the teams, the Penguins and Capitals met in the playoffs five times in a six-year period Luc Robitaille from 1991-96. On four of those five occasions, it was the Penguins breaking the hearts of Caps fans — usually in dramatic fashion. Their meeting in the 1995 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals was no different. Washington stole Game One in Pittsburgh, 5-4, and followed a Game Two by securing back-to-back wins at USAir Arena to take a 3-1 series lead on the Penguins for the third time in four seasons. With their backs against the wall in Game Five at the Civic Arena, the Penguins regained their scoring touch and captured a series-changing 6-5 overtime victory when the most unlikely candidate — rookie blueliner Francois Leroux, whose hands were more noted for engaging in fisticuffs than making highlight-reel passes — stepped up with a dramatic feed to Luc Robitaille for the game-winner. Robitaille began the winning sequence by stripping a Capital of the puck high in the defensive zone and promptly skating up ice. As he reached the center red line, Robitaille had his pocket picked by Washington’s Steve Konowalchuk. Leroux, who was trailing the play, but at the end of his shift, picked up the loose puck and carried it over the Washington blue line wide to the far side despite several teammates yelling at him from the bench to dump change. Within a few strides, Leroux was able get a step on the defender, Ken Klee. As Klee gave him a few hooks to the midsection, Leroux was able to send a perfect backhand pass to the blade of Robitaille in the slot. All it took was a quick flick of the wrists by Robitaille and the puck went sailing far side into the back of the twine behind Jim Carey for a 6-5 Pittsburgh victory. While Robitaille’s goal is the image most remembered from this game, it should also be noted that Ron Francis factored into each of the Penguins’ first five goals — tying a single-game team record with four assists to go with his goal — and Jaromir Jagr and Kevin Stevens each added two goals and an assist. Not only was Robitaille’s overtime tally the game winner, it was also the first time all night the Penguins held a lead after trailing by scores of 2-0, 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4. Robitaille’s goal concluded the first of three straight wins by Pittsburgh, which overcame the 3-1 series deficit by blitzing the Capitals by a 10-1 score over the final two games on their way to a 4-3 series victory.

PENS PROFILE MAX TALBOT

For Max Talbot, the Stanley Cup playoffs are always a new beginning. “They never get old,” said the 5-foot-11, 190-pound center. “You’re always really excited to get into it. It’s that time of year. You play 82 games, and it comes down to April, May and June.” Talbot once provided the Penguins the ultimate happy ending, scoring twice in Game Seven at Detroit to win the 2009 Stanley Cup. He headed into this year’s post-season feeling good: He skated in all 82 regular-season games after playing just 45 in 2009-10 because of shoulder and groin difficulties. Talbot got his post-season magic going quickly, netting the night’s first goal as the Penguins edged Tampa Bay, 3-2, to claim Game Three of the teams’ first-round playoff series on April 18. Talbot is a better player in the playoffs, and tangibly more productive. He averages .278 points per game during the regular season. After Game Three vs. Tampa, he was averaging .483 points per playoff contest. Talbot had 14 goals and 16 assists in 62 career post-season tilts. Why does Talbot improve come spring?
In 62 post-season contests, Max Talbot has 14 goals and 16 assists. continued on page 172

“That’s a really tough question,” Talbot said. “I’ve been thinking about that, about what makes you a good player in the playoffs. “It’s about focus. It’s about confidence. A lot of it is definitely mental. It’s about getting ready, getting prepared and knowing every little play matters, that you can be the guy who makes a difference.” Experience helps, too. “Experience is always huge,” said Talbot, 27. “You play teams that sometimes, it’s their first time in the playoffs and they’re not sure what they’re getting into. You go through highs — you’re really high. You go through lows — you’re really low. You need to stay focused. “Experience helps. If you lose Game One, you know the series isn’t over. If you’re down a goal, you know you can come back. It helps with the little things you need to do to be successful.” Talbot opened the playoffs centering the Penguins’ third line, an energized trio that includes wingers Pascal Dupuis and Chris Conner. “It’s been great,” Talbot said. “We finished the [regular] season on a good note. We’ve been creating a lot of chances and played well defensively at the same time. Duper had six goals in his last 10 games, so he’s been finishing. As a line, we’ve been chasing pucks, hunting pucks, trying to keep it simple. “Hopefully, we’ll do the same thing in the playoffs. We’ll try to be a really strong and effective third line.” Tampa Bay isn’t a traditional Penguins rival. Indeed, the teams had never met in the playoffs before the current series. “You say there’s no rivalry, but sometimes it only takes one game to start a rivalry,” said Talbot. “You don’t start a series thinking, ‘Oh, they’ve got a nice team. They’re good guys.’ You need to hate them to play hard, to win the game.” The Penguins compiled 106 points despite having Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal in the same lineup just twice all regular season. They headed into the postseason sans Crosby and Malkin but with a winner’s swagger and a champion’s experience. “We never really stopped and said, ‘Oh, my God, what are we going to do?’ ” Talbot said when asked about the absences of Crosby and Malkin. “It was always, ‘Stay the course. Keep playing hard. Keep playing the same way.’ Obviously, we’re well-coached. Dan [Bylsma] just told us, ‘Do the same thing. Play the same system.’ It worked.” Talbot had eight goals and 13 assists in 82 games during the regular season. The native of Lemoyne, Quebec was happy to miss zero games. Talbot had shoulder surgery in July 2009, a month after winning the Stanley Cup, then struggled with injuries throughout the subsequent campaign. “Last year was really bad for me,” Talbot said. “I was dealing with my shoulder, then my groin. It was really tough. “Last summer, I took pride in really taking care of my body and rehabbing the shoulder. This year, I’ve been healthy. It was actually a season objective for me to play 75 games. It was in the back of my mind. So, playing 82 games meant a lot to me. I proved I could stay healthy, even playing the way I play, playing physical. I played my game and stayed in the lineup.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).
