MEDIA INFORMATION

MEDIA ENTRANCE: Members of the media can access CONSOL Energy Center through the administrative entrance located to the right of the box office at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Washington Place. Media with proper accreditation should proceed to the first floor, using the elevators just inside the administrative entrance. Media should continue through three sets of double doors before reaching the arena level. Signage will direct you to all media areas, including the designated elevators to the media level. CREDENTIALS: 2013-14 regular-season credentials will not be valid for the 2014 playoffs. Length of play credential requests for all rounds prior to the Stanley Cup Final must be submitted to the Penguins communications department and will be distributed before the first home game of the first round. Individual game credentials will be issued based on availability and should be reserved as early as possible. Major daily newspapers, television and radio outlets will receive priority in handling game-by-game requests. All requests must be submitted to Jason Seidling (jseidling@pittsburghpenguins.com) no later than 48 hours prior to the game. Game-by-game credentials may be picked up at the CONSOL Energy Center media entrance two and a half hours prior to game time. The National Hockey League will handle all credential requests for the Stanley Cup Final. All members of the media must apply to the NHL for Stanley Cup Final accreditation. Applications must be received by the date determined by the League. Only working members of the media will be admitted to the locker rooms. The Penguins require all members of the media to display credentials at all times inside CONSOL Energy Center. MEDIA MEAL ROOM: The media meal room is located on the lower level in the south end of the building. Members of the media and game night staff must present credentials at the door for admittance. The media room will be open two hours prior to the start of each game with dinner and beverages available for purchase. MEDIA WORK AREA: The designated media work area for the playoffs is located on the first floor, in the northwest corner of the building, behind sections 105-106. The work area is equipped with wireless Internet, telephones, electrical outlets and televisions. Tabletop work space will be available before and during all home playoff games, as well as practice days at CONSOL Energy Center. General media workspace is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Media are asked to use the hallway coming from the loading dock to access the work area. The locker room hallway will have restricted access on game days and all media must adhere to these restrictions. Both team’s head coaches will be available for postgame media availability in this area after all home playoff games. The podium may also be used by either team for player availability. MEDIA LEVEL: The media level is located on the east side of the building above sections 216-223. It is for game personnel and working members of the media only. Designated elevators to the media level are located down the hallway from the media room in the southeast corner of the building. Take the elevators to the 7th floor and exit to the right. Please note that all seats in the media level are assigned and media should refer to the posted seating charts for direction. Overflow media will be assigned seats in auxiliary seating areas when necessary. PHOTOGRAPHERS: Penguins team photographers and photographers affiliated with major news outlets or wire services that cover the team on a regular basis will be given priority for all ice-level positions. Due to recent changes in NHL safety policies, the number of ice-level positions with holes has been restricted to eight. Some ice-level positions will require shooting through the glass. Single-game photographer credentials are extremely limited and will be available on a game-by-game basis and assignments may rotate each period. Priority will be given based upon regular-season attendance. Photo assignments will be posted at the media entrance upon arrival and inside the photographer work room prior to each game. The Penguins will provide a limited number of stools to be used at ice-level photo positions inside CONSOL Energy Center. The stools are numbered and available for pick up inside the photographer work room. All stools must be signed out and returned to the work room at the end of the night. The Penguins ask that all ice-level photographers use the provided stools as a courtesy to our fans.

TELEVISION CREWS: Due to seating limitations, television crews will not be assigned seating in the media level. On-air talent will be assigned one seat per station in the media level. Television crews are asked to view the game in the media work area. TV crews are not permitted to shoot highlight footage of game action. LOCKER ROOM ACCESS: The locker rooms are located behind the player benches on the west side of the building on the lower level. Both are accessible via the hallway from the media work room. The Penguins locker room will open no later than five minutes after the conclusion of the game per NHL regulations. Please be advised that the conclusion of the game includes allotted time for post-game television interviews and the three stars ceremony. The Penguins training room and the players’ dressing area are off-limits to the media at all times. The entrance to the Penguins locker room is through the double doors across from Suite 66 on the lower level. At the conclusion of practice, the locker room will be open as per NHL requirements. The Penguins prohibit members of the media to access the Penguins locker room from the bench and runway. All members of the media are asked to use the elevators to access the locker rooms on Level 1. *** NOTE *** Only working members of the media with proper media credentials will be admitted to the locker rooms. Please note that due to the increase in media during the playoffs, INTERNS working for credentialed media outlets will not be permitted in the Penguins locker room for the purpose of ‘observing’ or ‘assisting’ full-time media employees. Per NHL policy, still photography is prohibited inside the Penguins locker room. This includes the use of cell phones as cameras. POST-GAME PROCEDURES: Post-game briefings with head coaches Dan Bylsma and Alain Vigneault will be held after each game in the media work room. Post-game audio from both coaches is available via email. Please see a member of the Penguins communications staff prior to the start of the game to be added to the distribution list. 2013-14 NOTES SEASON SUMMARY The Pittsburgh Penguins and head coach Dan Bylsma enjoyed another successful regular season in 2013-14, winning the first-ever Metropolitan Division crown despite suffering a NHL-leading 529 man-games lost due to injury. Pittsburgh’s division title was the eighth in franchise history, and combined with last season’s Atlantic Division title, marked just the second time in franchise history that the Penguins have won back-to-back division titles (1992-93, Patrick Division; 1993-94, Northeast Division). This season the Penguins established the second-highest single-season win (51) and point (109) totals in club history. The Penguins qualified for the postseason for the eighth-consecutive year – extending the second-longest streak in franchise history (11 consecutive years; 1990-91 thru 2000-01). Pittsburgh defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-2, in the First Round to advance to Round 2 for the fifth time in the past seven years. In the Second Round the Penguins will face a familiar foe when they take on the New York Rangers.

HOME-ICE ADVANTAGE CONSOL Energy Center once again provided the Penguins with a significant home-ice advantage this year, as the team won 28 games, the fourth-highest single-season total in franchise history. Only the Boston Bruins (31) won more home games among Eastern Conference teams. Along the way, the Penguins picked up their 100th regular-season win since CONSOL Energy Center opened when they defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3 in a shootout, on Apr. 9. Since the building first opened in 2010-11, the Penguins have recorded more home wins (100) than any other team.

CROSBY CAPTURES 2ND ART ROSS TROPHY Sidney Crosby stayed healthy for an entire regular season for the first time since 2009-10, and the result was a dominating performance that culminated with him winning the second NHL scoring title of his career – his first since 200607. Crosby played in 80 games this year, which was the second-highest total of his career, allowing him to post a leagueleading 104 points (36G-68A). His 68 assists also led the NHL, the first time in his career he has paced the league in that category. Crosby was instrumental in helping the Penguins win 51 games by recording at least one point in 60 of his 80 games. When Crosby had at least one point, the Penguins went 47-8-5 (.825 pct.); compared to just a 3-16-1 mark (.175 pct.) when he was held scoreless. He factored into 43% of Pittsburgh’s 242 goals – the highest percentage of any NHL player. Thanks to Crosby’s scoring crown, the Penguins have now won the Art Ross Trophy 15 times since 1988 – the highest total among all NHL teams.

ROAD WORK Away from the friendly confines of the Pittsburgh city limits, the Penguins also proved plenty adept at winning hockey games, as the team’s 23 road wins this year were the third-highest single-season total in franchise history. Only the New York Rangers (25) won more road games among Eastern Conference clubs. Pittsburgh has now won 20 or more road games in seven consecutive full seasons dating back to 2006-07, the longest active streak in the NHL (excludes last year’s shortened season). Since Dan Bylsma took over as head coach on Feb. 15, 2009, the Penguins have won 117 of 201 road games (58%), eight more than the next-closest team.

QUIETLY DOMINANT Although he played in just 60 regular-season games due to injuries, Evgeni Malkin was one of the most-dominant players in the NHL this season. Pittsburgh’s second-leading scorer with 72 points, Malkin averaged 1.20 points per game, the second-highest figure in the NHL behind teammate Sidney Crosby. Malkin was especially good in November, when he led the NHL in both assists (21) and points (25) while being named NHL ‘Second Star’ of the month. His 21 assists were the most by a NHL player since Wayne Gretzky had 21 helpers in January 1996.

2013-14 NOTES NHL’S TOP SPECIAL TEAMS UNIT Pittsburgh finished the regular season with the NHL’s top special teams unit, converting on a league-leading 23.4% of its power-play chances while killing penalties at an 85.0% clip – the fifth-highest kill rate in the NHL. This marked just the second time in franchise history that the Penguins finished the regular season with the league’s top power-play unit (1995-96; 26%). Chris Kunitz led the way for the Penguins with 13 power-play goals (5th in NHL), with both James Neal and Sidney Crosby (11 each) also scoring in double digits with the man-advantage. During the past two seasons, Kunitz ranks second in the NHL with 22 power-play goals, with Neal placing a close fourth (tied) with 20. Pittsburgh’s penalty killers finished the season ranked in the top-5 in the NHL for the third time in the past four seasons. Craig Adams ranked fourth among all NHL forwards by averaging 3:02 shorthanded minutes per game. Brandon Sutter led the team with a career-high-tying three shorthanded scores.

DIVISION DOMINANCE The Penguins captured the first-ever Metropolitan Division title thanks in large part to their dominating record against divisional foes. Pittsburgh went 20-8-2 against teams from the Metro. That made the Penguins the only Eastern Conference team – and one of just three NHL teams – to win 20 or more division games this year. Sidney Crosby led all NHL players with 41 points (15G-26A) in 30 divisional games. Marc-Andre Fleury posted some of his best numbers in games against teams from the Metropolitan Division, going 156-2 with three shutouts, a 2.26 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage in 24 contests.

LONGEST HOME WINNING STREAK For the second consecutive year, the Penguins broke the team record for longest home winning streak. Between Nov. 15 and Jan. 15, the Penguins won 13 consecutive games at CONSOL Energy Center, establishing a new mark that bested the previous high of 12 games (Feb. 22-March 30, 2013). Not only did the Penguins make history during that period, but they did so in dominating fashion by either playing with a lead or being tied for 88% of the total minutes during the streak: Minutes with a lead: 491:21 Minutes tied: 198:40 Minutes trailing: 94:59

DAN THE MAN Dan Bylsma cemented his status as the most successful head coach in franchise history when he picked up his franchise-record 233rd regular-season victory when the Penguins came back to complete a dramatic 5-4 shootout win against the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 7 at Rogers Arena. Bylsma bested the mark of 232 set by Eddie Johnston. Later in the year, Bylsma became the fastest coach in NHL history to win 250 games (396 games) at Winnipeg on Apr. 3. Anaheim’s Bruce Boudreau held the previous record (416 games). That same night, Bylsma joined Johnston as the only coaches in franchise history to win multiple division titles.

NEXT MAN UP One of the reoccurring storylines surrounding the Penguins during the regular season was the amount of injuries – especially to key figures – that the team had to overcome throughout the course of the campaign. Pittsburgh suffered 529 man-games lost to injury, a total that was not only the team’s highest since at least 1991-92, but it made them one of just three teams to surpass 500 man-games lost during the past five years. SOURCE: mangameslost.com Pittsburgh’s misfortune began in September when goaltender Tomas Vokoun had to undergo emergency surgery to dissolve a blood clot, an injury which forced him to miss all 82 regular-season games. In late January, the Penguins were dealt with another tough blow when Kris Letang suffered a stroke that caused him to miss 26 games before his dramatic comeback on Apr. 9 against Detroit. In total, 25 of the 40 players that Pittsburgh rostered this season missed at least one game due to injury. Five players – Vokoun, Letang, Beau Bennett, Paul Martin and Pascal Dupuis – missed at least half of the season.

2013-14 NOTES ANOTHER RE-MARC-ABLE SEASON Forced to carry a heavy workload once again due to Tomas Vokoun’s injury situation, Marc-Andre Fleury responded by turning in one of his finest regular seasons, helping to keep the Penguins locked atop the NHL standings despite all the injuries around him. Fleury won 39 games this season, the third-highest single-season total of his career. He reached that mark despite playing his fewest amount of games (64) since 2008-09. His goals-against average (2.37) and save percentage (.915) were improvements over the numbers he posted last year. Over the past five years, no NHL goaltender has won more regular-season games than Fleury (177). He enters the Second Round with the most playoff wins of any goaltender in the tournament (49).

FILLING THE VOID In the days leading up to the 2013-14 season, the Penguins expected to dress a top-4 defensive core of Kris Letang, Paul Martin, Brooks Orpik and Rob Scuderi. But that plan was scuttled most nights as that quartet combined to skate in just 201 of a possible 328 games due to several long-term injuries. Luckily for the Penguins, their absences were lessened thanks to Matt Niskanen stepping up to post a career year and Olli Maatta quickly proving to be one of the NHL’s top rookies. Not only did Niskanen equal a career high by skating in 81 games, but he established career highs offensively in goals (10), assists (36) and points (46). His point total left him just shy of cracking the top-10 highest-scoring blueliners in the NHL. Two categories that Niskanen did lead NHL defensemen were game-winning goals (6-tied) and plus/minus (+33). Maatta played well beyond his 19 years of age, contributing nine goals and 29 points in 78 games. Only two other rookie blueliners finished with more points than he did. Maatta’s nine goals this season were the second-highest total among rookie defensemen in franchise history (Zarley Zalapski; 12; 1988-89).

SELLOUT STREAK EXTENDED The Penguins sold out all 41 home games this season at CONSOL Energy Center – the seventh consecutive year the team has sold out its entire home slate. Heading into the Second Round, the Penguins have sold out a franchise record 330 consecutive games (including playoffs) dating back to Feb. 14, 2007. Pittsburgh celebrated its 300th-consecutive sellout on Nov. 27 of this past year with a dramatic 6-5 comeback win via shootout against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Since the sellout streak began, 5,872,607 fans have seen the Penguins in action, an average of 17,796 per game. During the streak the Penguins have an overall record of 216-93-21 (.686 pct.). This season the Penguins attracted a franchise-record 763,334 fans during their 41-regular-season home games – which averaged out to 18,618 fans per game.

NOVEMBER • The Penguins celebrated the team’s 300th consecutive sellout when they hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs Nov. 27. • Evgeni Malkin was named NHL ‘Second Star’ for November after leading all NHL players with 21 assists and 25 points during the calendar month. His 21 assists were the most recorded by a player since Wayne Gretzky did so for the Los Angeles Kings in January 1996. • Evgeni Malkin was named NHL ‘First Star’ for each of the final two weeks in November. • Marc-Andre Fleury was named NHL ‘Second Star’ for the week ending Nov. 3 after going 3-0 and denying 78 of the 83 shots he faced (.940 SVP). • Jeff Zatkoff earned his first NHL win and shutout when he stopped all 19 shots he faced in a 3-0 blanking of Columbus Nov. 2 at Nationwide Arena. • Paul Martin played in his 600th NHL game at NY Rangers Nov. 6. • Chris Kunitz appeared in his 600th NHL game and Deryk Engelland his 200th NHL game vs. Nashville Nov. 15. • Zach Sill made his NHL debut at New Jersey Nov. 16. • Brian Gibbons scored his first NHL goal and added an assist for two points in his NHL debut against Anaheim Nov. 18. • Jussi Jokinen played in his 600th NHL game vs. Anaheim Nov. 18. • Kris Letang skated in his 400th NHL game in his

DECEMBER • The Penguins reached the midway point of the regular season following their 5-3 win at Columbus on Dec. 29 with 29 victories and 59 points. That’s the most wins the team has ever had 41 games into a full season and the secondhighest point total (60 in ’92-93). • Pittsburgh’s 11 wins during the month of December tied the Anaheim Ducks for the most wins in the NHL. The Penguins’ 22 total points were second-most in the NHL behind Anaheim’s 23. • Sidney Crosby led all NHL players in December with 23 points (9G-14A) – the third-straight calendar month that a Penguins player led the league in scoring. • Sidney Crosby was named NHL ‘Second Star’ for the week ending Dec. 22 after tallying eight points (2G-6A) in four games. • Sidney Crosby played in his 500th NHL game vs. San Jose Dec. 5. • Brian Dumoulin made his NHL debut at Detroit Dec. 14. • Evgeni Malkin recorded his 600th NHL point with a goal at Detroit Dec. 14. • Brian Dumoulin recorded his first NHL point (assist) vs. Toronto Dec. 16. • Philip Samuelsson made his NHL debut against Toronto Dec. 16. JANUARY • The Penguins established a franchise record by winning 13 consecutive home games at CONSOL Energy Center from Nov. 15-Jan. 15. • Dan Bylsma established the Penguins’ regularseason franchise record by earning his 233rd career victory following Pittsburgh’s 5-4 shootout win at Vancouver Jan. 7. • Brooks Orpik and Paul Martin were named to the United States Olympic team following the 2014 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium on Jan. 1. • Five more Penguins players – Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz (Canada); Jussi Jokinen and Olli Maatta (Finland); and Evgeni Malkin (Russia) – were named to their respective Olympic squads on Jan. 7.
