WWE RAW SUPERSHOW CONTINUES PITTSBURGH’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH WRESTLING WWE returns to Pittsburgh this spring with its Raw SuperShow at CONSOL Energy Center. Its performers continue a long-time love affair with the city’s fans that started more than 50 years when professional wrestling took place in small facilities and “Studio Wrestling” was first televised. In 1961, the Civic (Mellon) Arena opened and in 49 years more than 370 wrestling events took place there.

That tradition continues at CONSOL Energy Center where the Raw SuperShow will be the fifth WWE event scheduled since the facility opened in 2010. Today, there are Superstars and Divas, rather than wrestlers. Anyone associated with the WWE business will tell you that the performers are entertainers and more multi-dimensional than the professional wrestlers of the 20th Century. The talent of the WWE uses scripted theatrics, music and moves not seen in more than 3,000 years of Greco-Roman wrestling to entertain its audiences. The popularity of WWE and its brand of over-the-top entertainment are as huge in the Steel City as the most beefed up Superstars. The raucous, serialized drama of Raw and other WWE shows pack CONSOL Energy Center and arenas around the globe. This isn’t new in Pittsburgh which has been a sweet spot for the industry that began as professional wrestling. In “The Golden Age of Pittsburgh Television”, a piece for the Tribune-Review, Sandra Downs wrote: “WIIC Channel 11 began broadcasting Sept. 1, 1957. By Williams was one of the original crew members who shaped the station’s early years…. continued on page 6

continued from page 5

Channel 11’s local programming for the older audience included ever-popular ‘Studio Wrestling.’ ‘No matter where we held it, the show would pack the house,’ said By, ‘from high school gyms to the Civic Arena. At the show’s peak, we even beat out Bill Burns’ Saturday night 6 p.m. news….’” Just as the advent of television brought professional wrestling into viewers’ homes, the WWE uses all media options including television and the web, video games, chat, Twitter and Facebook to build its following. WWE action often involves the referees, the broadcasters, WWE management and even the audience – as well as the Superstars and Divas – as Pittsburgh native and billionaire, Mark Cuban can attest. Cuban appears entirely engaged on a WWE Greatest Moments video as a guest host who declares himself the referee of a match between Superstars Sheamus and John Cena. Things go south for Cuban when Sheamus takes offense, after Cuban pushes him, and retaliates by putting Cuban through a table -http://www.wwelivetour.com/video/sheamus-puts-mark-cuban-through-table. Names used by the wrestlers haven’t changed much. Old-timers include Lord Zoltan, Crusher Lisowski, Moose Cholak, Killer Kowalski, and

– George “The Animal” Steele, – The Batman, and – The Mongol Contenders in the Raw SuperShow include CM Punk, Epico, Primo, Kane, and

– The Big Show – The Miz, and – The Rock Two Pittsburgh wrestlers who have performed under their own names are Bruno Sammartino and Kurt Angle. Angle wrestled at Mt. Lebanon High School and won the 1996 Olympic gold medal in wrestling. He moved to professional wrestling in 1998. Sammartino, an immigrant teen, attended Schenley High School. He began working out to defend himself from bullies, began wrestling in 1959, and first appeared at the Civic Arena in 1962. With signature moves like “Bodyscissors, European Uppercut, Frog Splash, Headbutt, Moonsault and Rear Naked Choke, Angle pursued a professional wrestling career in the WWE and its earlier entity the WWF, Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling where he has been its World Heavyweight Champ five times, and New Japan Pro Wrestling. Angle has acted in film and on television. Most recently, he appeared in “Warrior,” with Joel Edgerton, Nick Nolte and Tom Hardy. The film, shot in Pittsburgh, was released last year. continued on page 8

Sammartino, known as wrestling’s Living Legend, received the Dapper Dan Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2011. He was known to finish with the Bear Hug, Hammerlock and Pendulum Backbreaker, which complemented his signature moves, including the Abdominal Stretch, Arm Drag, Body Slam. Dropkick, Hip Toss, Running Big Boot, Running High Knee and Airplane Spin. In “Pittsburgh: The Story of the City of Champions, The 70s – A decade Unmatched in the Annals of Sports,” editors Jim O’Brien and Marty Wolfson write that Sammartino was known to ~R-Truth more people worldwide than Pittsburgh sports figures like Terry Bradshaw, Willie Stargell, Dave Parker, Joe Greene, or even Arnold Palmer. A loyal Pittsburgher, he was a regular on “Studio Wrestling” and he sold out Madison Square Garden 187 times. In 1980 at the age of 41, Sammartino wrestled Larry Zybisco, drawing a record crowd of 16,661 at the Civic Arena and a week later in a rematch at Madison Square Garden and Felt Forum, they drew the largest wrestling crowd of all time, 26,102. The WWE has recorded crowds multiplying that number significantly. Its fans broke an indoor attendance record at the Silverdome when 93,173 people came to watch Hulk Hogan take on the undefeated Andre the Giant at one of the most famous events in WWE history. Sammartino continues to hold the record as the longest-running champion of the World Wide Wrestling Federation. He held the title twice for more than 11 years. He also has the longest single WWE Championship reign in professional wrestling history. R-Truth has won championships in the WWE and the TNA, and Cody Rhodes is the Intercontinental Champion. They are WWE Superstars. While the card for the Raw SuperShow is not finalized, both men say that they love Pittsburgh crowds. “Pittsburgh is one of our favorite spots to be. The fans are great. They like the Superstars,” says R-Truth. “Everyone should come out and be entertained. You will not be disappointed. You will go away on an emotional rollercoaster,” he says. On being a Superstar, R-Truth says, “It’s an awesome feeling.”

WWE’s R-Truth

The WWE form of entertainment “has nowhere to go but up,” he says. His favorite part of his career is “touring, seeing different people and places.” Asked if there’s a least favorite part of being a Superstar, he says, “Least favorite – none. I’m in this because I love it. I wake up every day ready to go for it.” To prepare for a performance, R-Truth says, “I work out like a mad man. I go to the gym… and prepare my mind.” R-Truth has a long list of mentors and Superstars who he admires including Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, and The Rock. R-Truth, who also raps, says that Jackie Crockett, who he asked for help with his music career, talked him into going to a couple of

shows and paid for his training as a Superstar. Rhodes says, “For me it’s an easy thing to be inspired to be in sports entertainment. I followed in the footsteps of my father (Dusty Rhodes) and brother (Golddust). It’s a family business.” He wrestled in Ohio Valley Wrestling which he says is a lot like a minor league system before signing with WWE. He says, “The best way to describe it is you are honing your craft in front of 400 people or you are (in the WWE) honing your craft in front of 4 million people.” Before every appearance, Rhodes prepares by doing Bikram Yoga. “I need that 5 to 10 minutes of solitude.” Cast in the role of a WWE villain, Rhodes says, “I bring a different side to the villain. I’m looked upon by the WWE universe as a bad guy. I can’t just go out and curl my mustache. Not to be what my father was. Not to be what my brother was. I have to sell it.” “It’s no longer just professional wrestling,” says Rhodes, “It’s sports entertainment.” 11 ]

WOLFE CRAFTS BRONZE LEMIEUX

REGION: VERSION: MARKET: DATE:

NEW CAR EASTERN REGION 1/2H PAGE / FULL PAGE PITTSBURGH 06/18/08

For 15 months sculptor Bruce Wolfe toiled in his northern California studio to construct “Le Magnifique” – a statue depicting Penguins owner/Hall-of-Famer Mario Lemieux. Wolfe, whose sculpting career spans 40 years, crafted the 4,700-pound, larger-than-life bronze statue that stands in the plaza outside the Trib Total Media Gate at CONSOL Energy Center. The monument, which was unveiled Wednesday afternoon, is based on a photo that ran in Sports Illustrated, featuring a play in which Lemieux split two defensemen on his way to scoring a goal. “I think it is (my biggest challenge),” Wolfe said. “I’m an old man and this has really been hard, a tough job. “It’s got a lot of stainless in it to keep it precariously balanced. There’s a lot of stainless steel that goes all the way down to the ground, welded inside each of those figures.” Despite the tough work, Wolfe was pleased with the final product. “Sometimes you don’t know what you have when you have it,” Wolfe said. “In this case, I wasn’t a hockey fan. I’m in my little studio all day and I’m working. I’ve got fingers full of clay. This, for me, was very exciting. This man is a real star and an amazing human being. It was a gift from God. That’s what it was.”

expect it to be “I didn’t so much fun.”

~Bruce Wolfe

Wolfe, who has sculpted many high profile people, including Margaret Thatcher, Muhammad Ali and Jack London, made five different miniature statue models for the team to observe, including one with Lemieux alone, before the organization decided on the current design. “I did five different (mini statues) for them, including him as a single individual player out on the ice,” Wolfe said. “He’s got some great moves. I did some others that they looked at. This is the one that everybody liked the best because it was real action. “It made a doable piece, in a way. It wasn’t just a lone man standing to God thing. This is an action shot, which I thought was kind of a beautiful photograph from Sports Illustrated.” It was a strenuous undertaking, but the most difficult portion was creating Lemieux’s head. Wolfe made four variations, finally nailing the last try. “Doing his head was difficult. He is a handsome guy,” Wolfe said. “(It was tough) making the life come out of him.” While Wolfe has sculpted many prestigious people in his career, he said crafting Lemieux was his most Mario Lemieux and Bruce Wolfe enjoyable effort. “I didn’t expect it to be so much fun,” Wolfe said. “I had no idea. I’ve been to a few of these. I did Margaret Thatcher. I went to England to do her. I’ve done a lot of notable people. But this is the most fun.” And the ultimate sign of gratification came from the approval of Lemieux himself. “He’s such a cool guy, so you want him to be happy with it,” Wolfe said. “That’s the whole deal. He liked it.” And Lemieux wasn’t the only one. Wolfe added: “I think his mom liked it, too.”

James Gallery commissioned Pittsburgh graphic artist and photographer, JEANINE LEECH to develop a selection of photographic manipulations. Produced in large scale on high-gloss aluminum panels, her images depict energy and speed inside the frames. The manipulated images portray the excitement of the game, maintaining focus on the player.

MICHAEL LOTENERO, contemporary Pittsburgh Pop artist, combined illustration and fine art techniques to develop a series of hockey icons (skates, pucks, sticks, goalie mask and goal). Massive silkscreen-like murals are strategically placed, allowing multi-level vantage points. Lotenero’s images define the expansive arena walls, providing a stage for the Penguins’ franchise players.

His signature hand drawn outline technique is showcased on the series of images.

James Gallery engaged Pittsburgh designer STEPHEN STREIBIG to develop and fabricate the Legendary Moments installation series that punctuates the suite level along with a unique glass award wall, flanking the entrance to the executive offices. Concepts were realized in steel, sandblasted glass, LED lighting, and hand silk-screened prints, large format photos, archival objects, sports prose and tension cables. Stephen created a dimensional piece, Frozen Moment, that focuses on a hockey puck streaking on a collision course toward the poised and alert Marc-Andre Fleury. A dark, abstracted iceberg lurks in the background of a frosty, transparent image conveying intensity and gravity reflected in this decisive moment.

GREG SHAMUS, recognized as one of the top professional photographers in the sports industry and current Penguins team photographer, along with his predecessors, provided the foundation for the collection displayed on PNC Legends Level. continued on page 34

THAD CHRISTIAN, motion artist and film /video editor, collaborated with James Gallery to develop a variety of art collages and murals on PNC Legends Level and throughout the CONSOL Energy Center (Captain Morgan Club, the Mario Mosaic and Locker Room graphics). Motion studies provided the insights for Slap Shot and Save, a dynamic mural flanking the entrance to the parking garage. Thad’s knowledge of the game and aesthetic ability, were instrumental to create multi-layered graphic situations that engage the players and the television audience during game interviews.

This season, 30 Community All-Stars organizations were selected for recognition at Penguins regular season home games.

The most recent honorees included the following organizations: • American Red Cross, Indiana, PA • Athletes Serving Athletes, based in Lutherville, MD and doing work in Washington, PA • Black Diamond Girl Scout Council, Ohio County, WV • Cystic Fibrosis, Pittsburgh • National Wild Turkey Federation, headquartered in Edgefield, SC and doing work in Pennsylvania • Operation Troop Appreciation, Pittsburgh • Ruffed Grouse Society, Coraopolis, PA • United Way of Washington County (PA) • Wheeling (WV) Fire Department, and • Whitehall (WV) Police Department. David Peart, the Penguins Senior Vice President of Sales and Service, says, “CONSOL has been doing a lot of good in the surrounding communities for a long time. We wanted to partner with them to highlight the people who are making a difference. For CONSOL this is important, because they want to be known for all the good things they do, not just putting their name on the building.” According to Ziemba, each year CONSOL gives millions of dollars to nonprofit organizations managed by people who are providing a great service to the community. “We thought it would be a great idea to recognize some of these individuals who give back so much to their communities, whether it be through youth programs, emergency services, assisting those in need or volunteerism,” Ziemba says. As special guests of CONSOL Energy Inc. and the Penguins, the group of Community All-Stars were hosted at a lunch in Suite 66. A video and photo shoot followed across the hall in the Penguins locker room. “Passion,” “Work Ethic,” and “Accountability,” the words encircling the locker room walls, describe the commitment and contributions of the Community All-Stars, as well as the values prized by the Penguins. Standing in the midst of lockers labeled with the names of Penguins team members, representatives of each organization got their turn in front of cameras for congratulatory shots to be used during upcoming games. In addition, they got the chance to take some of their own pictures at favorite Penguins’ lockers, or ones that captured the huge team logos decorating the floor and ceiling. “CONSOL Energy produces the coal and natural gas that power America, but it’s the energy of regular people doing great things that make our communities a better place,” Ziemba says.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SKATES AND PLATES

It’s not every day that the best hockey players in the world serve dinner to fans. In Pittsburgh, it happens just once a year at the team’s annual Skates & Plates Charity Gala presented by Trib Total Media, which took place Feburary 23 at CONSOL Energy Center. “Tonight you’ll see players who are some of the finest athletes in the world stumbling and serving plates and dinner,” joked head coach Dan Bylsma. “I think it’s a unique event in terms of the players and their participation. It’s an amazing event. It’s a great event for the fans and the community to be a part of.” The event benefits the Mario Lemieux Foundation, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Western PA Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Since 1986, the team’s annual benefit dinner has raised over $5.5 million for Pittsburgh area charities with an emphasis on medical research.

This year, the event raised over $260,000 for charity. It featured Penguins players donning tuxedos and serving as waiters for the evening. The event also featured entertainment by “The Three Waiters” and a live auction. Each player was assigned a table (or in some cases, two) and served beverages, salads, entrées and desserts. Though the guys are certainly much more comfortable with hockey sticks in their hands versus wine bottles and dinner plates, they understand the importance of this event and enjoy every minute. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury couldn’t say enough about the generosity of the people he and his teammates served. “It’s something I’ve noticed in Pittsburgh,” he said of the attendees’ benevolence. “I’ve been here for a while, and I’ve found people are very generous with their time and their money, helping out a great cause and great charities. I think we can make a difference all together working like that.” The popular Fleury is a veteran of the event, and stopped numerous times throughout the meal to take photos and sign autographs. His table’s wine glasses got a bit empty in the process, and teammate Craig Adams had to come to the rescue — and made sure Fleury knew it. Fleury picked up his waiter performance, as Bylsma announced to the crowd that the player who received the highest tip would get a day off while the fate of the player with the worst tips would be up for debate. The coach went on to thank the crowd for their support, and his warm opening address resonated with everyone. “With the coach welcoming us the way he did, it made us feel a part of this and energized to tip our waiters and to make a good donation to the foundations,” attendee Kelly Natale said. “Overall, it’s just a good event to be a part of and we’re lucky to be here.”

Young players seem betterprepared than ever to take prominent roles on their new teams, and the Draft offers the opportunity for our fans everywhere to watch our prospects take the next dramatic step toward their NHL careers.” The 2012 NHL Draft will be the first held in Pittsburgh since 1997 and the first League event at CONSOL Energy Center – the state-of-the-art building that opened in 2010 and is one of the most luxurious arenas in the NHL. The 1997 NHL Draft saw forward ~David Morehouse Joe Thornton selected first overall, followed by his current San Jose teammate Patrick Marleau second overall. Olli Jokinen, Roberto Luongo and Eric Brewer rounded out the top five selections in 1997. “On behalf of the City of Pittsburgh and the hockey fans of Western Pennsylvania, we’re excited to be hosting the 2012 NHL Draft at CONSOL Energy Center,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the Penguins. “Pittsburgh again will become the center of the hockey universe for one of the most important weekends on the NHL calendar, as our teams select the next generation of NHL stars. Much as we did with the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®, we look forward to turning the week leading up to the draft into a celebration of hockey – especially youth hockey here in Pittsburgh.” The Pittsburgh Penguins, Stanley Cup® Champions in 2009 and perennial Eastern Conference contenders, have a strong nucleus of players selected high in previous NHL Drafts. They have six first-round draft picks on their current roster – including captain Sidney Crosby (first overall, 2005), MarcAndre Fleury (first overall, 2003), Evgeni Malkin (second overall, 2004), Matt Niskanen (28th overall, 2005), Brooks Orpik (18th overall, 2000) and Jordan Staal (second overall, 2006). CHECK YOUR HEART GO RED FOR WOMEN

The Penguins love their fans and to show how much they care, they are teaming with the American Heart Association and UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute to raise awareness of heart disease and the importance of screening through the Check Your Heart program. According to Daniel Edmundowicz, M.D., a cardiologist with the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, screenings are an important tool in understanding your risk for heart disease so you can take action to prevent it. “It’s important because cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of men and women in America. And it’s preventable, for the most part,” Dr. Edmundowicz says. “There is no substitute for being healthy. The Penguins are committed to supporting programs that promote good health in the community. We hope Penguins fans will join us along with UPMC and participate in the free Check Your Heart screenings,” says David Peart, Penguins senior vice president of sales and service. When the Penguins get behind a cause the entire organization pitches in. Fans could not miss the message when their Penguins hosted Check Car magnet/photo frame giveaway at CONSOL Energy Center. Your Heart Night at CONSOL Energy Center when they played the New York Rangers. Question: How many ways can the Penguins tell fans to go to the Check Your Heart website – www.UPMC.com/CheckYourHeart -- to take a quick online heart disease risk assessment and find free screenings in their areas? Answer: Plenty. Fans coming to the Check Your Heart Night game saw the glass spine of CONSOL Energy Center illuminated in red by Three Rivers Entertainment for the occasion. Inside, the Check Your Heart message was everywhere from the free car magnets/photo frame giveaway to CONSOL Energy Center’s many and varied lighted digital displays. continued on page 61

There was an ad in the free game day program, Ice Time, and there was video: • a 30-second spot ran on the center-hung scoreboard • footage from the screening at the U.S. Steel Building ran www.UPMC.com/CheckYourHeart during the first intermission, and • a public service announcement recorded by head coach Dan Bylsma ran during the second intermission. Penguins coaches, TV and radio broadcasters, and the team’s executives wore “Go Red for Women” branded ties, and Iceburgh, the Penguins’ mascot, wore an over-sized red scarf for the occasion. For those listening at home or online, Dr. Edmundowicz participated in a first intermission radio interview during the game broadcast, and there were banner ads on www.pittsburghpenguins.com. That night, the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute and the American Heart Association hosted a kiosk on the concourse offering free screening information and the opportunity to win an autographed Evgeni Malkin jersey. The Penguins also participate in special free screenings. More than 130 people checked their hearts at mid-day screenings at the U.S. Steel Building and CONSOL Energy Center, which were supported by the Penguins. Participating in a screening is a positive step toward good health, and participating in a screening supported by the Penguins is downright fun. Participants might meet Iceburgh, Penguins alumni like Francois Leroux, or Steve Mears of the Penguins Radio Network, who all were on hand to greet the crowd at the U.S. Steel Building. Autographs and photos were the order of the day. Individuals, who completed screenings, automatically were registered in a drawing to win autographed merchandise and tickets supplied by the Penguins.

THE PITTSBURGH POWER The Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League promises plenty of action on and off the field in its second season of play at CONSOL Energy Center. Peter Hill, President of The Pittsburgh Power, says, “Our main goal is to bring a championship to the city of Pittsburgh. We believe the organization and Coach (Chris) Siegfried have put together a great group of players that will carry us far into the post-season. We also will continue to strive to bring a top quality professional sports entertainment experience to the fans and the city of Pittsburgh that is affordable for everyone.” On this year’s roster are quarterbacks, Bill Stull and Andrico Hines who are competing for a starting role. “PJ Berry joined the team this year. He was last year’s AFL Ironman of the Year,” says Hill, “and had the most all-purpose yards in the league. He is one of the best kickoff return players in the league, and we are expecting big things out of him this season.” “We have also signed Beau Elliot, a local Center who played at Highlands and IUP, and has been a star in the Arena League ever since he was named to the AFL’s All Rookie team in 2008,” says Hill, The 2011 Pittsburgh Power Season. adding, “Randy Hymes is another great addition to continued on page 64

the team, and compliments the other star receivers that rejoined the team from last season like Mike Washington, and Lonnell Dewalt.” Power players won’t be the only source of entertainment voltage this season, according to Hill. In addition to the up-close action and interaction with players, pyrotechnics and the Spark dance team, he says, ~Peter Hill “We are also working on a few more surprises that we will be announcing in the near future.” An awesome indoor pyrotechnics exhibition at the home opener will be followed with other special events during the team’s nine home games in 2012. On Military Appreciation Night, Power players will wear unique digital cam-o jerseys that will be given away at the end of the game to fans randomly selected from the audience. Team Ghost Rider – monkeys riding dogs and herding sheep to rodeo music – will perform a half-time show later in the season. “We are thrilled to have our second season underway. We think the value of being able to sit in the lower bowl of the CONSOL Energy Center for $15 to watch one of the most exciting entertainment experiences in the world of sports is unparalleled here in the city, and we hope the fans and the city are as excited as we are for this season,” Hill says. Home games take place on Fridays or Saturdays through July 20 at CONSOL Energy Center. The Pittsburgh Power, owned by CEO and GM Matt Shaner, Lance Shaner, and former Pittsburgh Steeler Hall of Famer Lynn Swann, will have most of its games broadcast on CW Network or NFL Network.
