TIMBERLAKE’S PHENOMENAL 2013 TO INCLUDE CONCERT IN PITTSBURGH By: Pam Thompson

The multi-talented performer, Justin Timberlake stars in “The 20/20 Experience World Tour” and performs at CONSOL Energy Center in December, as he puts the wrap on a phenomenal year in his career and heads into 2014 with rocketing momentum. This tour, the first to headline Timberlake in six years, will visit dozens of countries throughout North America, Europe, South America and Australia, and fans are clamoring for tickets. Timberlake’s tour appearances which run into next year, began selling out well before the first concert, and it seems that the star has been everywhere in 2013. One of this generation’s most celebrated entertainers, Timberlake announced his return to the music industry in January and released the tune, “Suit & Tie” featuring Jay-Z, the lead single for his third studio album in February.

“Was he ever gone?” some may ask. There will be more on that after a review of his whirlwind year. Continued on page 4

Timberlake, who has won six Grammy Awards and been nominated for the award 20 times, performed “Suit & Tie” in February at the 55th Grammy Awards. Jay-Z, who is prominently featured on the song, joined the act from the audience. In March, prior to the release of Timberlake’s third studio album, “The 20/20 Experience,” released in the middle of the month, the performer joined his pal, Jimmy Fallon for “Timberweek” on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” In May, “Suit & Tie” was nominated for BET Awards for Video of the Year and Viewer’s Choice. “The 20/20 Experience” “The 20/20 Experience World Tour” is Timberlake’s made its debut at second tour of this year. Number 1 on the With Jay-Z, he co-headlined Billboard 200, with the “Legends of the Summer Stadium Tour” in record-setting sales July and August.

for the artist.

Jay-Z’s “Magna Carter World Tour” plays CONSOL Energy Center on January 21 In August, Timberlake, a sensation at the MTV Video Music Awards, performed a showcase of his music which included a long-awaited reunion with ‘N Sync. He was honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, presented by his friend Fallon, as well as three Moonman trophies for Video of the Year and Best Editing for “Mirrors,” and Best Direction for “Suit & Tie.” For hosting “Saturday Night Live” five times, Timberlake is a member of “SNL’s” Five-Timers Club,” and he was nominated for a 2013 Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy for his most recent SNL hosting gig. Timberlake already owns two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy for his appearances on “SNL.” His 2009 award was for his appearances on the classic show, and in 2011, he won the award for hosting. Back on the music front — “The 20/20 Experience” dominated global charts. Continued on page 6

Timberlake built on this energy with the global release of the lead single for “The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2,”Take Back the Night.”

In four weeks, “Take Back the Night” gave Timberlake his sixth top 10 ranking on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Leading up to the release of “The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2,” Timberlake’s fourth studio album, the star again returned to “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” for “Timberlake Tuesdays” in September. Teaming with Fallon for “The Evolution of End Zone Dancing,” the pair’s YouTube video had more than 30,000 hits in about 12 hours. Timberlake focused on his acting career during his hiatus from music, and appeared in nine films between 2008 and 2012. In 2010, he played Sean Parker in “The Social Network” which was nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture. The production won three Academy Awards and four Golden Globes including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score. A year later, Timberlake appeared in two screen comedies: o “Bad Teacher,” with Cameron Diaz, and o “Friends with Benefits,” a commercially successful romcom with Mila Kunis. In 2012, the Memphis, Tenn. native played leading man to actress Jessica Biel when the two married. Also in 2012, Timberlake appeared as a scout for the Red Sox in the baseball drama, “Trouble with the Curve,” starring Clint Eastwood with Amy Adams, Matthew Lillard and John Goodman. This year, two of his films are scheduled for release. In May, he attended the 66th Cannes Film Festival for the screening of “Inside Llewyn Davis” with his costars Oscar Isaac who is cast in the title role, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman and Garrett Hedlund. The film, a comedy directed by the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan, won the Grand Prix in Cannes. It is scheduled for release in December, and it has been selected as the closing night film for the American Film Institute’s AFI Fest in November. Continued on page 8

In the film, Timberlake acts and sings, portraying a folk singer in New York City in 1961. Another of his film projects, the dramatic thriller, “Runner Runner,” starring Timberlake alongside Ben Affleck, opened in theaters in early October. It has been a spectacular year for the multi-talented star, and given his many gifts, it is anyone’s guess what he might next offer to his many fans. It was widely reported in late August that Timberlake wanted to play the villainous Riddler to Ben Affleck’s Batman in the upcoming movie being directed by Zack Snyder. On the fashion front, Timberlake made an appearance in July for his William Rast clothing line. Founded with his friend Trace Ayala in 2005, the two were on hand at the Hudson’s Bay department store in Toronto. Reportedly, there are plans to expand the William Rast presence in Hudson’s Bay stores, as well as with JC Penney. If fans hadn’t realized that the multi-talented performer had been “gone” from the music scene since wrapping up his Future Sex/Love Sounds Tour in 2007, perhaps it is understandable. While on a hiatus from music from 2008 through 2012, Timberlake notched some notable accomplishments and collaborations: o He pulled in his fifth and sixth Grammy Awards in 2008 with the Best Dance Recording for “Love Stoned,” and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “What Goes Around…Comes Around.” o That same year, he and Madonna worked together writing and performing “4 Minutes,” live and on her “Hard Candy” album and the video. That work was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2009. o Still on a break from making music, Timberlake was nominated for three Grammy Awards in 2010 for Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Dead and Gone” with T.I. and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “Love Sex Magic” with Ciara. Making the holiday season a little brighter for Timberlake fans in Pittsburgh, the performer brings “The 20/20 Experience World Tour” to CONSOL Energy on Saturday, Dec. 14. |9|

ACCOLADES PRECEDE DRAKE TOUR It has been a year of accolades and attention for the melodious rapper, Drake, who brings his distinctive music to his fans this fall via the North American arena tour, “WOULD YOU LIKE A TOUR?” The tour supports Drake’s long awaited album, “Nothing Was the Same.” The album leaked onto the Internet prematurely, ahead of its September release date, perhaps answering the prayers of impatient fans. Talking about his newest album, the Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum selling, recording artist says, “I think the music that I’m making is more concise, more clear,” Acknowledging the influence of Marvin Gaye on his work, Drake says, “Don’t be surprised when I’m singing or using melody…. I’ll never do a straight rap album. That’s not how I came into this and that’s never what I’ll do.” That’s fine, especially in light of the success of Drake’s work. This year alone, he won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album for “Take Care,” three BET Awards for Best Collaboration for “Problems,” Video of the Year for 2 Chainz “No Lie,” and Coca-Cola Viewers Choice for “Started From the Bottom,” and the Juno Award for Video of the Year for “HYFR.” He performed a medley of “Hold On, We’re Going Home” and “Started From the Bottom” at the MTV Video Music Awards this summer and was nominated for Moonman awards for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Direction for “Started From the Bottom.” Internationally, he was nominated for an MTV European Music Award for Best Hip Hop. His tour features Miguel, a Grammy Award-winning rising R&B star who will support on all dates, as well as special guests including rapper Future.

‘DONNY AND MARIE CHRISTMAS’ TO CELEBRATE YULE TRADITIONS By: Pam Thompson Holiday tradition is what “Donny and Marie Christmas in Pittsburgh” is all about. The Osmond brother and sister duo brings their celebrated yuletide concert to CONSOL Energy Center as part of this year’s 15-city tour. In recent years, the show played Broadway, Chicago and Los Angeles. With a dash of holiday spirit and their trademark showstopping production numbers, “Donny & Marie Christmas in Pittsburgh” features songs of the season and cheer plus hits from their distinguished careers all mixed with their irresistible chemistry that made them international stars. Donny and Marie say that the Christmas tour recalls the Osmond family’s TV specials with Andy Williams and Perry Como and even will feature some clips from their 1970s Christmas shows. Donny fields some questions about the tour, performing in Pittsburgh, his career, working with Marie, and his family’s holiday traditions. “I’m really excited I’m really looking forward that Pittsburgh routed nicely this year as to coming to Pittsburgh. we’re playing more The show is really fun and East Coast dates as fast paced, full of different opposed to last year’s West Coast Christmas styles of music, great Tour,” Donny says. Committed to Maintaining American Leadership in Manufacturing ATI is building an advanced Hot Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF) in Brackenridge, PA. This project, just outside Pittsburgh, will be the most powerful hot rolling facility in the world for manufacturing nickel-based alloys, titanium, titanium alloys, specialty alloys, zirconium and stainless steel sheet and plate. At a cost of $1.2 billion, the HRPF is among the largest industrial construction projects currently underway in the United States. He adds, “I’m really looking forward to coming to Pittsburgh. The show is really fun and fast paced, full of different styles of music, great dancing, amazing singing, oh and Marie will be there too.” Describing what he and his sister are planning for their audience, Donny says, “I think people are going to be very surprised by this show. We will celebrate all the great memories that people have of the Christmas TV specials, and I’ve got to get ‘Puppy Love’ in there, but Marie and I never stop looking for ways to work with our dancers and our band to deliver a show that will make our audience forget about the problems of the world for that moment we spend together.” The Donny and Marie Las Vegas show featuring music, singing and dancing at the Flamingo marked its sixth anniversary this year. Their show is rated The Best of Las Vegas, and Donny and Marie also were voted “Best Performers of Las Vegas” in 2012. Describing their holiday show and touching on sibling rivalry, a recurring comedic theme, Donny says, “(It’s) everything you’d expect from a Donny and Marie Christmas show, and more. We’ve been very fortunate in receiving great reviews. But we don’t rest on our laurels. We give people what they want to experience. My favorite part of the show is when Marie leaves the stage.” In a humorous video clip, the brother and sister briefly debate the name of their show – “Donny and Marie” v. “Marie and Donny.” Donny gives his view on the discussion: “Marie and I have been working together since we were children – literally – and she has been trying to get it changed to ‘Marie and Donny’ ever since I can remember. That’s like saying Garfunkel and Simon, Fitch and Abercrombie, or even Robin and Batman. No matter how hard she tries, it will always be Dolce and Gabbana. I mean Donny and Marie.” Continued on page 31

Talking about his career, Donny says, “Not many people can claim they’re still going strong after five decades. I’m very grateful to have a career that touches so many generations. In fact, after I won ‘Dancing With the Stars’ (season 9), a 10-year-old boy came to see us perform in Las Vegas. During the meet-and-greet after the show, he says to me, ‘Mr. Osmond, I didn’t know you could sing too!’” On his greatest satisfaction as a performer, Donny says, “The late Steven Pimlott was my director when I did ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat.’ He said to me one day, ‘The theater is where people come to dream in public, and you, as the entertainer, are in charge of that dream.’ When I see people enjoying themselves at our concerts, that is the magic of show biz and I’ve been enjoying that feeling for 50 years.” If he could go back and change anything about his career, Donny kids, “Why did I ever decide to wear purple socks?” Going for another laugh, Donny sums up his greatest career challenge concisely – “Working with Marie.” Discussing what he would like to do in the future, Donny says, “I’d like to think that I’ll be singing and entertaining for the rest of my life. My next endeavor that I’m currently working on is my 60th album.” On his family’s holiday plans, Donny says, “We keep things pretty simple. My three oldest are married, and they are starting their own Christmas traditions. But, the best way to observe Christmas is being at home. That’s why the tour ends on the 21st.” Donny and Marie bring their Christmas show to CONSOL Energy Center on Dec. 12.

HILLSONG UNITED RAISES MUSIC, FANS HEAVENWARD By: Pam Thompson When its “WelcomeZion” tour comes to Pittsburgh, Hillsong UNITED will raise its music to heaven in hopes of sending its audience there as well. That is according to JD, Jonathon Douglass, who is one of Hillsong UNITED’s four front men/worship leaders. JD spoke with “Show Time” from the group’s base in Australia, sharing insight into Hillsong UNITED’s tour which showcases its hit album “Zion.” “It was never planned to do albums or tour,” says JD. “Out of passion for God, it’s all come about through the church,” he says. A worship band that arose from the youth ministry of Hillsong Church in Sydney, Australia, Hillsong UNITED has become a global entity through We believe that its albums and tours in which It we will influence strives to connect people to Jesus. The group has toured six more people with continents and 42 nations since our music and 2006, and has a goal to reach more the God that it people, says JD.

“We feel we’ve had a measure of success, but in the grand scheme of things there are many people in the world, and we haven’t scratched the surface yet,” he says adding, “We believe that we will influence more people with our music and the God that it serves.”

Reviews of “Zion” call its music “richly textured,” “simply beautiful” and “one of the best mainstream worship albums.” According to its promotional information, “UNITED desires to see a generation across the earth awakened to real love, rising up with hearts as one and finding value in the broken, hurting and lost connecting with Jesus.” Considering the success of the “Zion” album, as well as that of the summer leg of the “WelcomeZion” tour, UNITED is well on its way to reaching the ears, and perhaps the hearts of the world. “Zion,” UNITED’s 12th album and third studio recording made its debut on the Billboard 200 at No. 5, and it also topped the Billboard Christian & Gospel album and digital charts. Reviews of “Zion” call its music “richly textured,” “simply beautiful” and “one of the best mainstream worship albums.” HILLSONG With sell-outs in four major cities and more than 15,000 crowding into Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl, the three-week launch of the “WelcomeZion” tour in June drew more than 80,000. They came to hear favorites such as “From the Inside Out” and “With Everything,” as well as popular songs from “Zion.” “Packing the Hollywood Bowl in LA was pretty incredible for us as ordinary guys from Australia,” says JD. “I remember looking out at 15,000 plus and just taking a snapshot memory. It was an honor to play on that stage.” Briefly describing the “WelcomeZion” tour for Pittsburgh fans and others who plan to attend, JD says, “It’s high energy, a lot of fun, and we believe above all else that people will have an encounter with God.” Continued on page 38

Asked how the “WelcomeZion” tour differs from Hillsong UNITED’s August 2011 concert at CONSOL Energy Center, JD replies, “I think it’s that we haven’t changed but hopefully we’ve just gotten better.” As if checking to see if anyone is listening, he says, “We tour with a mountain now.” It’s an LED screen shaped like a mountain. “We light it up and have a lot of fun with it,” JD says, adding that the concert “will be even bigger and better and people will have an even better time.” Continued on page 41 | 38 |

Explaining his view on why UNITED’S music uplifts people, JD says, “Well, the whole purpose of the songs we write and the tours that we embark on — the whole reason we do them – as a bunch of young — not so young guys from Australia – we try to capture the hope that God has brought to our lives and try to bring that to others.” Fronting UNITED and leading worship along with JD will be Joel Houston, Jadwin “Jad” Gillies, and Matt Crocker. UNITED describes its group of performers as “an evolving collaboration of pastors, worship leaders, musicians and songwriters, all bound by the common goal of giving voice to a generation who is passionate about God.” On stage with the familiar worship leaders will be: o Dylan Thomas o Timon Klein o Ben Tennikoff o Simon Kobler o Adam Crosariol o Michael Guy Chislett Talking about the group’s success and direction, JD says, “I think for us really it all comes out of our personal relationship with Jesus.” He also cites the importance of their local church, explaining, “There are great leaders and pastors who give inspiration and direction.” “It blows us away that we get to do what we do,” he says, ‘adding, “We’ll stay true to where it all began and came from.”

INTIMATE SETTING PLANNED FOR GROBAN PERFORMANCE By: Pam Thompson

Josh Groban brings his “In the Round” tour of North America to CONSOL Energy Center this fall for an “intimate arena” performance.

“In the Round” places Groban on a stage in the middle of the crowd. If “intimate arena” sounds like an oxymoron, the multi-platinum-selling singer, songwriter and actor explains. His job, says Groban, “is to make sure that everyone has a great seat.” He will entertain fans from all sides of the venue, singing classic songs that span his 12-year career. “In the Round” places Groban on a stage in the middle of the crowd. It builds on the concept of his 2011 “Straight to You” world tour, bringing the feel of a theater experience to arena settings. Bringing some of that energy to the “In the Round” tour will be Judith Hill. A finalist on last season’s NBC hit, “The Voice,” she joins Groban on the tour. In addition to “The Voice,” Hill is known for her duet with Michael Jackson on “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” on the late star’s posthumously released 2009 film, “This Is It.” Groban also says that tour dates will be unique in each city. While the entertainer travels with his own band, he is known to include local choirs and orchestra members from each city where he performs. Continued on page 46

I wanted this to be soulful, wanted it to be righteous and dynamic and inspirational and energetic.

Continued from page 45

A popular hallmark of Groban’s live performances is when he welcomes audience members to share the spotlight with him to show off their own vocal prowess. Searching out a lucky unknown, Groban asks, “Can you bring it?” It’s a moment in each show that swells the energy of the audience. In case after case, no one seems to enjoy the performance within a performance more than Groban himself who has shared the mike with men, women and children. Obviously enjoying the badinage with his audiences, Groban even invited a couple on stage during a show when the gent wanted to extend a very public marriage proposal to his lady. She said “yes.” Groban fans should keep an eye peeled for the performer when his tour comes to town. He says that he likes to see more of the cities he plays than the view from a hotel window.

Groban should have some ideas on where to find local flavor in Pittsburgh. Back in 1999, he left his hometown, the entertainment capital Los Angeles, and headed to Pittsburgh to study drama at Carnegie Mellon University. While everyone loves the “City of Three Rivers,” after a few months Groban was offered a recording deal and returned home to Los Angeles to pursue his singing career. The energy of a live concert is what Groban says he strove to evoke in his new album, “All That Echoes.” “I thought, ‘This is the energy, the dynamic I want for my next record, the feeling I’m getting on stage,” he says. That energy has been described as playful and intimate even in arena settings, as well as spirited and spontaneously personable. “All That Echoes” is his sixth studio album and his third album to chart at Number One on the Billboard 200, following “Closer” in 2004 and “Noel” in 2007. Groban says, “I wanted this to be soulful, wanted it to be righteous and dynamic and inspirational and energetic. And mainly wanted to find the sweet spot of my singing voice again, I always find it on tour.” The album also represents a melding of classical and rock/pop musicians, blending guitar and harp, and even street noises. Most of the work on the album was the result of the first few takes of each song, according to Groban. Elaborating on the album, Groban says, “‘Brave’ represents one of the higher energy songs, but never felt out of place to me. Never felt this was out of my world. It represents the kind of energy I had on stage.” “All That Echoes” tracks include: o “Brave” o “False Alarms” o “Falling Slowly” o “She Moved Through the Fair” o “Below the Line” o “E Ti Promettero” o “The Moon’s a Harsh Mistress” o “Un Alma Mas” o “Happy in My Heartache” o “Hollow Talk” o “Sincera,” and o “I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever).” In recent years, Groban has made comedic appearances in film and television. On “The Office,” he portrayed the brother of Andy Bernard in two episodes. He appears in the film, “Coffee Town,” with Glenn Howerton, Ben Schwartz and Steve Little, and in “Crazy Stupid Love” with Steve Carell.

LEGENDARY ART By: Pam Thompson

On the PNC Legends Level, guests will view Pittsburgh Penguins-themed art throughout. The Penguins’ world-class collection is a collaboration with Pittsburgh gallery owner James Frederick of James Gallery. The mission was to create unique art forms depicting action, recording history and entertaining a diverse audience. James Gallery engaged an eclectic team of artists, graphic designers and fabricators to achieve the vision of the Penguins organization. The result is a collection that emphasizes the speed and strength of the sport of hockey and the legends of this organization. GREG SHAMUS, recognized as one of the top professional photographers in the sports industry and current Penguins team photographer, along with his predecessors, provided the foundation for the collection displayed on PNC Legends Level. James Gallery commissioned Pittsburgh graphic artist and photographer, JEANINE LEECH to develop a selection of photographic manipulations. Produced in large scale on high-gloss aluminum panels, her images depict energy and speed inside the frames. The manipulated images portray the excitement of the game, maintaining focus on the player. continued on page 52

MICHAEL LOTENERO, contemporary Pittsburgh Pop artist, combined illustration and fine art techniques to develop a series of hockey icons (skates, pucks, sticks, goalie mask and goal). Massive silkscreen-like murals are strategically placed, allowing multi-level vantage points. Lotenero’s images define the expansive arena walls, providing a stage for the Penguins’ franchise players. His signature hand drawn outline technique is showcased on the series of images. THAD CHRISTIAN, motion artist and film /video editor, collaborated with James Gallery to develop a variety of art collages and murals on PNC Legends Level and throughout the CONSOL Energy Center (Captain Morgan Club, the Mario Mosaic and Locker Room graphics). Motion studies provided the insights for Slap Shot and Save, a dynamic mural flanking the entrance to the parking garage. Thad’s knowledge of the game and aesthetic ability, were instrumental to create multi-layered graphic situations that engage the players and the television audience during game interviews.

THREE RIVERS CLASSIC SET TO DELIVER GREAT HOCKEY

© Pittsburgh Penguins/Joe Sargent

By: Pam Thompson

Collegiate hockey takes center stage at CONSOL Energy Center when four, NCAA Division I teams converge for the second Three Rivers Classic in December. The Robert Morris University’s Colonials and Penn State’s Nittany Lions will be joined by Bowling Green State University’s Falcons and the Boston College Eagles for the two-day tournament on Dec. 27- 28. Pittsburgh Penguins Coach Dan Bylsma, talking about the significance of the Three Rivers Classic to western Pennsylvania hockey, says, “I think you know hockey, the growth of hockey in Pennsylvania and in Pittsburgh has been immense. And now to have a college hockey tournament annually come to Pittsburgh, the holiday tournament, to have home teams, have Pennsylvania teams to be anchors at the tournament every year, Penn State and RMU, I think is fantastic for hockey in this area.” Bowling Green Coach Chris Bergeron says, “Bowling Green is very excited to be a part of the second Three Rivers Classic. For us to be able to join three great college hockey programs in such a great hockey city is special.” According to Coach Bergeron, “The tournament has some extra meaning to our program with the ties Bowling Green Hockey has to the Pittsburgh Penguin coaching staff with Dan Bylsma and Todd Reirden being BG alums. Jerry York, former Bowling Green coach and current Boston College coach, will be our opening game opponent.” Continued on page 56

The annual Three Rivers Classic is a tremendous opportunity to showcase big time college hockey to all of the young aspiring hockey players throughout the Pittsburgh area.

Continued from page 55

Bergeron adds, “We feel our team will bring a hard working, intense brand of hockey to the fans in Pittsburgh.” The Three Rivers Classic made its debut in 2012, just months before college hockey’s NCAA Frozen Four was held at CONSOL Energy Center. The Robert Morris Colonials play in the Atlantic Hockey League and are in their 10th season. Coached by Derek Schooley, the program has recorded 124 wins, 156 losses and 40 ties for a .450 average. Penn State transitioned to NCAA Division I last season and joined the Big Ten Hockey Conference this year. The team logged 13 wins and 14 losses under the direction of Coach Guy Gadowsky in its premier season. Coach Jerry York’s Boston College team finished its 2012-2013 season with an overall record of 22 wins, 12 losses and 4 ties.

Penn State and RMU, the home state teams, RMU hosting the tournament, I think it’s great for the tournament, kind of a Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh tournament.

Coach Bergeron’s Bowling Green Falcons finished last season with an overall record of 15-21-5. Coach Bylsma shares his view of the contenders in this year’s Three Rivers Classic. “Well Penn State and RMU, the home state teams, RMU hosting the tournament, I think it’s great for the tournament, kind of a Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh tournament,” says Bylsma continuing, “Then to have Bowling Green-BC connection, Jerry York having coached at Bowling Green when I went to school there and at BC, and BC one of the best programs in the country here for the Three Rivers Classic, so it rounds out a great field.” Regarding this year’s Three Rivers Classic, Coach Bylsma says, “I have one thing to say about it – that Bowling Green is coming, and as a Bowling Green alum, I want the Falcons to be in the finals, win in this game and win in the tournament.” Unabashedly declaring his favorite, Bylsma says, “We know what colors I’ll be flying when any game is going on. I’ll be wearing the brown and orange,” Bylsma says. Some 22,000 spectators attended the first Three Rivers Classic when Robert Morris won the tournament. Marty Galosi, Senior Associate Athletic Director, External Affairs at RMU, says, “Robert Morris is honored to be a partner in the Three Rivers Classic. Last year’s turnout clearly exceeded all of our expectations and was a perfect springboard into the Frozen Four. We’re so pleased to be a part of college

hockey gaining a foothold in Southwestern Pennsylvania. It’s big for us also because those are the same fans we want to come out to the Island Sports Center to watch us play the rest of the season.” Bill Downey, Penn State’s Director of Hockey Operations, says, “Penn State is very excited to compete in front of one of our largest alumni bases in the country at the 2013 Three Rivers Classic. The support we received at the inaugural Three Rivers Classic in 2012 was fantastic. We are optimistic to see more of that this year – our first season in the new Big Ten Hockey Conference. Personally as a Pittsburgh native, I am so proud to see how far hockey has come in the city. The annual Three Rivers Classic is a tremendous opportunity to showcase big time college hockey to all of the young aspiring hockey players throughout the Pittsburgh area.” On Dec. 27, Bowling Green and Boston College will face each other, and in a Pennsylvania contest, Penn State will meet Robert Morris. Consolation and Championship games will be played on Dec. 28.

PEARL JAM TOUR KICKS OFF IN PITTSBURGH By: Pam Thompson

Pearl Jam kicked off the first leg of its North American tour at CONSOL Energy Center this fall, performing for a sold-out audience. Tickets for their Pittsburgh concert — Pearl Jam’s first appearance here since 2006 — sold out weeks in advance of their show as was the case in other venues including the tour’s last stop in Seattle, the city where the band formed. Founding members: Jeff Ament, bass guitar, Stone Gossard, rhythm and lead guitar, Mike McCready, lead guitar, and Eddie Vedder, lead vocals, rhythm guitar, have been making music together since 1990. Drummer Matt Cameron became integral to the band 15 years ago. With its studio albums, hundreds of live performances and hundreds of live concert bootleg releases over more than two decades, Pearl Jam continues to be a major force in rock and roll today. “Lightning Bolt,” Pearl Jam’s 10th studio album was released globally in October. “Mind Your Manners,” Pearl Jam’s new single, made its debut in July and its music video came out in August. It is included in the “Lightning Bolt” tracks with the title song and 10 others: o “Getaway” o “My Father’s Son” o “Sirens” o “Infallible” o “Pendulum” o “Swallowed Whole” o “Let The Records Play” o “Sleeping By Myself” o “Yellow Moon,” and o “Future Days.” From Pittsburgh, the tour continues through this year. The band also headlines at Voodoo Music + Arts Experience in November before launching the second leg of its tour in Dallas later that month, and wrapping up in Seattle in December. Pearl Jam will headline the Big Day Out festival in Australia and New Zealand early in 2014. | 63 |

There is new artwork at CONSOL Energy Center celebrating the Pittsburgh region, its sites, events and relationships, and it is a must-see and must-touch attraction. The mural – actually a trio of murals – was commissioned by Highmark and created by Pittsburgh artist, Dave Klug, who is widely known for his “Highlights Hidden Pictures.” The installation is located between Sections 110 and 115 on the FedEx Concourse Level in the Highmark Wall of Champions Hallway to the Highmark Kids Zone. The main mural extends along the hallway for 78-feet-and-8-inches. Its height is irregular and 15-feet-and-11-inches high at its tallest point.

It is full of people engaged in activities and portrays regional landmarks from Fallingwater in the east to the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport in the west with Golden Triangle sites in the middle of the work. In addition to the main mural, there are two others. One arcs around the entrance to Highmark’s Kids Zone. Klug says, “It was right up my alley.” This part of the project most resembles his Hidden Pictures style, Klug says. The other mural is not as “cartoony, and more graphic,” Klug says. Located across from the main mural, it portrays three moments in the Penguins Stanley Cup history: o Frank Pietrangelo making “The Save” in 1990 when the Penguins won their first Stanley Cup o Mario Lemieux scoring in Game 2 of the 1991 Stanley Cup Final, and o Sidney Crosby’s winning goal in Game 4 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final. Gregory Horner, Highmark Marketing Strategy Consultant says that the mural, presently unnamed, will have a seek-and-find interactive component, and it is intended to be “touchable.” Horner says, “There is no barrier. It is meant to be out there and interactive.” Highmark commissioned the mural after reviewing its space at CONSOL Energy Center, according to Horner.

“We were missing an opportunity to connect,” he says. “The people of Pittsburgh are very proud of the city. They love their city and they love the Penguins.” Highmark has a 75-year history in Western Pennsylvania says Horner. “Being part of the community is part of our nature.” Klug says, “Highmark is here for the Pittsburgh community and this shows in the mural.” Horner says that Klug was selected for the project with the help of Highmark’s advertising agency, Mullen. “Dave is a part of our community…it was a perfect fit.” Klug, who grew up in eastern Pennsylvania, has lived and worked in Pittsburgh since1983 and says that he considers himself a native of the area. He is the artist who some 20 years ago created the mural of famous Pittsburghers at Primanti Bros. in the city’s Strip District. Klug says that there are not hidden images in the mural, but it is packed with detail and lots of color. There are varying perspectives with some portrayals of children being close to life-size. “It’s very engaging to viewers,” Klug says. According to the artist, he did not work from a list of attractions. His work began as a small pencil sketch that continued to grow in size and detail before being scanned and saved as a computer file. That is when he added final details and the vivid colors. Commenting on the early response to the mural, Horner says, “People really seem to like it. When you look at it, it makes you smile.” | 68 |
